Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 Home Tutor in Dubai

Parents searching for a Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 home tutor in Dubai are usually asking two questions at once: what does this cost, and will somebody competent actually turn up. This page answers the money question first, with AED bands attributed to the companies that publish them, and then explains how IB Gram delivers 0500 support to Dubai households as one-to-one lessons on live video rather than as a visit to your address.

  • Every lesson runs one-to-one on live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time
  • AED figures on this page are market bands from named sources, not our invoice
  • Tutors mark whole Paper 1 and Paper 2 scripts, not extracts
  • A tutor teaches and gives feedback; nobody supplies sentences for a folder

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Start with the number, because that is what the search is really about

A Dubai parent typing "0500 home tutor" into Google at ten at night has usually just read a report card. The English grade has slipped from a 6 to a 5, the school has said something vague about "developing analytical depth", and the obvious move is to find somebody who will come round on a Tuesday and fix it. The first thing that should happen on a page like this is a straight answer about money, because every other decision follows from it.

Market rates for private tuition in Dubai are published, if you know where to look. EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour at the budget end. Tutopiya starts lower still, from AED 33-52. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270. BartyED charges AED 650 for its premium tier. Bestimate's 2026 rate survey puts in-home one-to-one visits between AED 180 and AED 350, with independent home tutors reaching AED 500 once travel is priced in. Those are other companies' numbers, quoted here with their names attached, and they describe the market a Dubai family is shopping in.

The spread between AED 45 and AED 650 is not a mystery. It is mostly a measure of how much mark-scheme knowledge sits behind the hour, and how far somebody has to drive to deliver it. An undergraduate who speaks excellent English can help a Year 9 student read more carefully. A teacher who has marked hundreds of Paper 1 summary tasks can tell your child why the three points they wrote scored one mark between them. Those are different services at different prices, and 0500 punishes the gap more than most subjects, because the paper rewards precision about language rather than recall of content.

IB Gram sits in the online one-to-one part of that market. We do not sell home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a Dubai address is a service we run only in India. For a family in Dubai that is a feature rather than a compromise, and the reason is geographic. If the tutor has to reach Mirdif or Arabian Ranches by half past four, the pool shrinks to whoever is free within a short drive. Online, the pool is every 0500 specialist who can take a slot in Gulf Standard Time, and the money you were paying for petrol and Sheikh Zayed Road goes into marking instead.

The rest of this page is built around that single idea: what the number is, what makes it move in this emirate specifically, and what you should get for it. There is a rate table with sources per row, a travel calculation you can check against your own commute, a term-by-term budget, and a plain statement of what a tutor may never touch in a coursework folder. If you finish reading and still want somebody at the dining table, you will at least know what the market charges for that and why.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

English as a First Language sits inside a Cambridge pathway that starts years before the IGCSE entry and continues after it. Where your child is on that pathway changes how many hours the 0500 grade needs, and changes the price accordingly.

LOWER SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary

The three years where reading stamina is either built or missed. Checkpoint tests run in March, May and October, and the writing strand is where a future 0500 candidate first meets the difference between describing an event and shaping a reader's response. Work here is cheap relative to its effect: an hour a week in Year 8 costs the budget band and removes the need for an exam-year scramble.

Dubai schools vary widely in how seriously Checkpoint writing is used as a diagnostic. Some British-curriculum schools in Al Barsha and Dubai Hills set internal targets from it; others treat it as a formality. Ask your child's head of English which Checkpoint strand came out weakest, because that answer tells you whether you are buying reading hours or writing hours two years later.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE English as a First Language (0500)

Two written papers, each two hours long, each carrying half the grade. Paper 1 tests reading: close comprehension, a summary task, analysis of a writer's language choices, and an extended response that asks the candidate to write in role from the text. Paper 2 tests directed writing and composition. Schools may instead enter a coursework portfolio in place of the written composition paper, and speaking and listening is reported separately rather than inside the overall grade.

Dubai's British-curriculum cohort is large enough that 0500 entry patterns differ school by school. Some schools in Jumeirah and Emirates Hills enter almost everyone for 0500; others stream weaker writers into English as a Second Language. Check which syllabus number appears on your child's entry sheet before paying for tuition, because 0500 and 0510 ask for genuinely different skills.

O LEVELAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge O Level English Language

A smaller number of schools still enter candidates for O Level English rather than IGCSE. The assessment shape is similar enough that a 0500 tutor can teach it, but the question wording and the weighting of the summary task differ. Hours are usually fewer because the paper is more predictable, and that shows up as a slightly lower total cost across an exam year.

If your child's Dubai school is running O Level English, the exam centre will be using the same June and November Cambridge series and the same six administrative zones for timetabling. Ask the exams officer which zone the centre sits in, because a parent revising from the wrong zone timetable is a real and avoidable problem.

AS/A LEVELAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS & A Level English Language

The continuation route for a strong 0500 candidate. The skills carry over directly: close language analysis, controlled writing in a specified form, and the discipline of answering the question actually asked. Families who invest in 0500 writing in Year 10 typically need fewer hours at AS, which changes the two-year cost picture rather than just this term's.

For MoE equivalency on the British track, students must show five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, plus one subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. English usually counts as one of the five, which is why a borderline 0500 grade carries weight beyond the school report.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Families rarely buy one subject. The list below shows where a 0500 student in Dubai most often needs a second set of hours, with the syllabus code so you can check it against the entry sheet rather than against a school's marketing.

English as a First Language (0500)

Cambridge IGCSE

The page's subject. Two two-hour written papers, split evenly between reading and writing. Marks leak on the summary task, on writer's-effects answers that list devices without explaining effect, and on compositions that run out of structure in the final third.

English Literature (0475)

Cambridge IGCSE

Frequently taken alongside 0500 in Dubai schools. The overlap is real but partial: both reward close reading, but literature demands memorised quotation and a sustained argument about a writer's method rather than a response written in role.

English as a Second Language (0510)

Cambridge IGCSE

The alternative entry for students whose English is strong but not first-language fluent. Assesses reading, writing, listening and speaking separately. A student moved from 0500 to 0510 in Year 11 needs different practice, not less of it.

History (0470)

Cambridge IGCSE

The subject where weak 0500 writing shows up fastest. Source questions reward the same inference skill as Paper 1 comprehension, and extended answers collapse for the same reason compositions do: no plan, no paragraph control.

Geography (0460)

Cambridge IGCSE

Case-study answers need precise, economical prose under time pressure. Students who fix their 0500 paragraphing usually gain marks here without extra geography teaching, which is worth knowing before buying two separate tutors.

Business Studies (0450)

Cambridge IGCSE

Evaluation marks depend on written judgement, not on content recall. A Dubai student who can write a controlled two-sided paragraph for 0500 Paper 2 can usually be taught to transfer it here in three or four sessions.

Mathematics (0580)

Cambridge IGCSE

Listed because it is the most common second subject in a Dubai family's budget. Pairing maths and English in the same week spreads the monthly cost but doubles it; most families stagger them across Year 10 and Year 11 instead.

Combined Science (0653)

Cambridge IGCSE

Six-mark extended responses in science are marked for clarity as well as content. Students who have learned to answer the question asked in 0500 tend to stop writing everything they know, which is where science marks are usually lost.

Arabic as a Second Language (0544)

Cambridge IGCSE

Included because Arabic is mandatory in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum. For non-Arab students this often runs alongside 0500 and competes for the same homework evenings, which affects how many English sessions a week is realistic.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three session shapes cover almost every 0500 request we take from Dubai. Each one has a different monthly cost, and the right choice usually depends on how many weeks remain before the written papers rather than on budget alone.

Weekly one-to-one, live video

One sixty- or ninety-minute session a week through Year 10 and into Year 11. The rhythm matters more than the length: a composition written on Saturday, marked against the descriptors, returned with two specific targets, and redrafted before the next session. This is the cheapest route to a durable grade change because nothing has to be crammed.

  • Fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, agreed around the school run
  • One marked piece of writing between every pair of sessions
  • Written targets a parent can read without a teaching background
  • Rate sits in the online one-to-one part of the market, not the in-home part

Pre-series intensive block

A six- to eight-week run of two sessions a week in the term before a June or November Cambridge series. Half the time goes on timed Paper 1 practice under exam conditions, half on Section B composition technique. Monthly spend roughly doubles for that period, which is why most Dubai families book it as a block with an end date rather than as an open commitment.

  • Two sessions a week, one reading and one writing
  • Whole papers sat to time, then marked against published descriptors
  • Session notes mapped to the question types that lost marks
  • Ends on a stated date, so the budget has a ceiling

Marking-only review cycle

For students who are taught well at school but never get a whole script marked individually. The student submits a timed response, the tutor marks it in detail and records a short screen-shared walkthrough, and a shorter live session covers the two biggest issues. Costs less per week than a full session and suits families managing several subjects at once.

  • One full script marked per cycle, with annotation on screen
  • Thirty-minute live follow-up rather than a full hour
  • Useful alongside school coursework deadlines without duplicating them
  • Can be paused for a term without losing the tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What "0500 home tutor in Dubai" usually means in practice

A Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 home tutor in Dubai, as the phrase is used by families, means private one-to-one English tuition arranged outside school for a Year 10 or Year 11 candidate. The word "home" describes where parents imagine the lesson happening rather than anything about the teaching. In practice the question behind the search is whether somebody will give a single child undivided attention on the two papers that decide the grade.

IB Gram answers that question with one-to-one lessons delivered live on video to Dubai households. We do not send tutors to UAE addresses; in-home visits are a service we run only in India, and no page on this site should suggest otherwise. What a Dubai family gets instead is a specialist chosen for 0500 rather than for postcode. That distinction is worth stating plainly because it is the whole trade: you give up a physical presence in the room and you gain a much larger pool of people who know the paper.

The practical difference shows up in the first session. An in-home tutor with a general English background will usually start by reading through a text with the student. A 0500 specialist starts by asking for a marked script, finds the three question types where marks were lost, and spends the hour on those. Both feel like a lesson. Only one of them changes the mark. Everything below is written to help a parent in Dubai tell the difference before any money changes hands, starting with what the market charges and why the figures vary by a factor of ten.

02

Market rates for 0500 English tuition in Dubai, with sources

Three of the six most visible tutoring sites in this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars. That is why the table below exists. Every rate in it is attributed to the company that published it or to Bestimate's 2026 Dubai tutoring cost survey, and every figure is a market observation rather than an IB Gram price list. Our own model is a free trial lesson followed by a quote for the sessions a particular student actually needs.

Read the table by tier rather than by headline. The budget row describes somebody who can supervise reading practice. The qualified-tutor row describes somebody who can explain why a summary answer scored two marks instead of five. The specialist row describes somebody who has marked timed 0500 scripts in volume and can predict, from one composition, which descriptor band a candidate will land in. For a student two grades below target in Year 11, the cheapest row is usually the most expensive mistake available.

Monthly packages circulate in this market as well as hourly rates. Published examples include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits. Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Those bands are the honest frame for a 0500 budget in Dubai, and they are the numbers the next two sections build on.

03

The travel arithmetic hiding inside an in-home rate

An in-home quote in Dubai is a teaching fee plus a driving fee, and the driving fee is invisible. A tutor who accepts a 4:30pm slot in Arabian Ranches and a 6:30pm slot in Al Barsha has committed roughly ninety minutes of unpaid Dubai traffic to earn two paid hours. Rational pricing recovers that, which is why Bestimate's in-home band starts at AED 180 while its online observations start far lower. Nothing dishonest is happening; the number simply contains a cost that has nothing to do with English.

The second hidden cost is choice. Insisting on a tutor who can physically reach Mudon by half past four reduces the candidate pool to people who happen to live nearby and happen to be free. For maths that is survivable. For 0500 it is a real constraint, because the skill you are buying is familiarity with how examiners reward language analysis, and that is not evenly distributed across Dubai's residential communities. Online, the same family can work with a specialist who has marked the paper for years and who schedules in Gulf Standard Time.

The third is reliability. A driving tutor caught on Al Khail Road loses the first fifteen minutes of a paid hour, and a sandstorm or a school event cancels the session entirely. A video session starts when the student sits down and can be moved by twenty minutes on a Sunday evening without anyone losing a journey. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, so the comparison below is between what the Dubai market sells and what we actually deliver.

04

What the two 0500 papers actually ask a candidate to do

Paper 1 is reading, and it is two hours long. It moves from close comprehension of a text, through a summary task that rewards selection and concision, into analysis of how a writer's language choices work on a reader, and finally an extended response that asks the candidate to write in a given role using material from the passage. Each of those four demands is a separate skill. A student can be genuinely strong at comprehension and still lose a grade on the summary because nobody ever showed them that marks come from points selected, not from sentences produced.

Paper 2 is writing, also two hours, and splits into directed writing and composition. Directed writing supplies material and a form, and tests whether a candidate can shape somebody else's content for a stated audience and purpose. Composition is a free choice between descriptive and narrative writing, marked on content and structure alongside style and accuracy. Some Dubai schools enter a coursework portfolio instead of the written composition component, and speaking and listening is reported separately rather than folded into the grade. Confirm which route your child's school has entered, on the entry sheet, before buying hours.

Because the two papers carry equal weight, the cheapest grade movement usually sits wherever the gap is wider, not wherever the student is more anxious. Most Dubai candidates arriving for 0500 support are better readers than writers, and almost all of them have written fewer than ten full timed compositions in two years. The exact mark allocations and the component structure change between syllabus years, so check the syllabus for your child's exam year on cambridgeinternational.org rather than relying on a tutor's memory of an older version.

05

Where 0500 marks leak, in order of how much they cost

  • Summary: points selected, not sentences written
  • Writer's effects: effect on the reader, not a list of device names
  • Extended response: stay in role, use the text, answer the actual task
  • Directed writing: audience and purpose before style
  • Composition: plan in four minutes, finish inside the time allowed

The summary task is the single most reliable source of lost marks. Candidates rewrite the passage in shorter sentences instead of selecting distinct points, then run out of words before the final third of the text. A tutor fixes this by marking a summary with the points numbered in the margin, so the student sees that nine lines of elegant prose contained four creditable points when the task offered many more. Two sessions on this alone will often move a borderline grade.

Writer's-effects answers are the second. A Dubai student who has been taught to spot devices will produce a confident paragraph naming metaphor, sibilance and personification without ever explaining what the reader experiences as a result. Marks follow the explanation, not the label. The repair is mechanical and teachable: quote short, name the effect on the reader, then explain why that particular word choice produces it rather than a synonym would.

Composition loses marks structurally rather than linguistically. Openings are strong because they have been practised; endings are weak because the clock runs out. Most candidates have never planned a composition in under four minutes, and most have never been forced to finish one in the time the exam actually allows. The fix is repetition under conditions, which is why a pre-series block is priced as two sessions a week rather than one. Accuracy matters too, but a well-structured piece with three comma errors outscores a flawless fragment of a story every time.

06

Permits, price and why the cheapest quote carries the most risk

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted through MoHRE free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page, "Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing", lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, with applications made through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

Two consequences matter to a parent comparing quotes. The permit costs nothing, so no tutor can justify a higher rate by pointing at licensing expenses. And individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, which means the AED 45 an hour arrangement made through a community group chat carries a risk that the invoice does not mention. No fine schedule has been published, so any figure quoted to you as the penalty should be treated with scepticism.

A separate rule applies to anyone running tuition from premises with staff. That is a training institute and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit, with initial approval first and a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps. IB Gram is not a Dubai training institute and does not hold that permit, and holds no approval from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or the IB. Reporting from Abu Dhabi also indicates that ADEK's professional-ethics rules prevent school staff from tutoring students enrolled at their own school for payment, which is worth verifying against the current policy document before relying on it.

07

Costing a full Year 10 and Year 11 run in Dubai

Most Dubai families overspend on English in one term and underspend across two years. The pattern is familiar: nothing happens in Year 10, panic arrives with the Year 11 mocks, and three sessions a week get booked at specialist rates for the eight weeks before the June series. That is the most expensive way to buy the same number of hours, and it is also the least effective, because composition technique improves through spaced redrafting rather than through volume in March.

The table below puts tuition next to the other numbers in a Dubai education budget. The anchor at the top is useful context: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. School fees are, for one year, a fixed line. Tuition is the variable one, and it is the line a family can actually plan.

Entry costs are the item parents forget. If your child sits as a private candidate rather than through their school, the exam centre sets the entry charge and administration fee, not the tutor. Ask the centre in writing well before the final entry deadline, because Cambridge's deadlines sit months ahead of the exam window. A Dubai candidate sits either the June series or the November one, and the entry for June closes in the spring while the entry for November closes over the summer. Neither date is published as one national cut-off, because Cambridge timetables its six administrative zones separately, so the centre's own deadline is the only one that binds you. Get it in writing, with the entry charge, before you commit to a private-candidate route.

What a tutor may and may not touch in a 0500 coursework folder

Where a Dubai school has entered the coursework route instead of the written composition paper, the boundary between teaching and malpractice becomes something a parent should understand rather than assume. The pieces in that folder must be the candidate's own work, produced under the school's stated conditions and authenticated by the school. A tutor who improves the folder by supplying sentences has not helped; they have created a problem that lands on the student, not on the tutor.

What a tutor can legitimately do is substantial. They can teach the form, model a different piece on a different subject, explain the assessment descriptors in plain language, question a draft until the student finds the weakness themselves, and mark a practice piece that will never be submitted. They can also say, honestly, that a paragraph is not working and ask what the student was trying to achieve. None of that touches the submitted text. All of it changes the next draft.

One competitor in this market sells finished Internal Assessments outright. That is an academic-integrity breach with consequences for the candidate, and it is the clearest line in our own policy: tutors teach, review and give feedback on a student's own work, and nothing else. If a Dubai provider offers to produce assessed writing for your child, the correct response is to walk away and tell the school. The same rule covers artificial-intelligence drafting: a tutor may discuss how to critique machine-generated prose, never hand it over as the student's.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Travel is the single biggest reason an in-home English rate in Dubai sits above an online one. The communities below are the ones where that arithmetic bites hardest, judged by school-run timing rather than by how a neighbourhood looks in a brochure.

Emirates Hills and Dubai Hills Estate

Large villa plots, gated entry and a long internal road network. A tutor driving in for a 4:30pm slot often loses twenty minutes inside the community itself before the first question is asked.

Arabian Ranches and Mudon

Far enough from the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor that term-time afternoon traffic genuinely matters. Families here pay the top of the in-home band precisely because few specialist English tutors live within a short drive.

Mirdif

Dense school cluster, which helps, but the approach roads back up badly between 3pm and 5pm. An online slot at 4:45pm starts on time; a driving tutor quoting the same hour often arrives at 5:10pm.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The highest concentration of British-curriculum secondary places in the emirate, so in-home supply is better and rates sit mid-band. This is the one part of Dubai where a parent can realistically shop on price for an in-home English tutor.

Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah

Short distances, slow roads. The in-home premium here is less about kilometres than about a tutor fitting two visits into one afternoon, which is why many independents quote a two-hour minimum rather than an hourly rate.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Apartment-heavy, with a younger secondary cohort and plenty of 0510 entries alongside 0500. Tutors tend to quote the lower in-home band but cap the number of households they will serve in a week.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Spread out and poorly served by any single tutor route. Families here were among the first in Dubai to move English support online, because the in-home quotes they received priced the drive honestly.

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai schooling market only. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school, school group or regulator named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the last marked script

Not the report card. A marked Paper 1 or a returned composition with a teacher's comments tells us in five minutes what two weeks of conversation would. If nothing has been marked recently, we set one timed piece before the trial lesson so the first session has something real to work on.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson, no card required

Sixty minutes with the tutor we think fits, at no cost and with no payment details taken. The trial covers one question type end to end so you can hear whether the tutor explains marks or merely corrects errors. If the match is wrong, say so and we propose somebody else.

  3. 03

Agree the shape and the ceiling

Weekly session, pre-series block or marking-only cycle, with a stated number of sessions and a stated end date. You see the quote before anything is booked, and we say plainly if a student needs fewer hours than the parent expected. Pausing for a school trip or Ramadan does not cost the slot.

  4. 04

    Marked work between every session

One full piece written to time, marked against the published descriptors, returned with two targets rather than ten. The targets are written for a parent to read, not for a staffroom. Over a term those notes become the record of what changed and what did not.

  5. 05

    Review at four sessions

A short written summary comparing the first marked script with the latest one: which question types improved, which have not moved, and whether the session count should go up, down or stop. Families who want to stop are told so without a sales conversation attached.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The price is explained, not implied

Every AED figure on this page carries the name of whoever published it and the month it was read. Three of the most visible competitors in this market publish no price at all, and one of them asks the price question in its own FAQ and then declines to answer it.

Specialist chosen for the paper, not the postcode

Because lessons run on live video, a family in Mudon or Nad Al Sheba can work with a 0500 specialist instead of whoever is free within a twenty-minute drive. That is the practical benefit of online delivery in a city shaped like Dubai, and it is the reason we do not sell home visits here.

Whole scripts marked, not extracts

A composition marked in full against the band descriptors tells a student something a corrected paragraph cannot. Marking is the slowest part of the work and the part most often skipped by cheaper arrangements, so it is the part we treat as non-negotiable.

Clear academic-honesty boundary

Tutors teach, question and give feedback on the student's own writing. Nobody supplies sentences for a coursework folder or hands over machine-generated prose. That boundary is stated here because at least one provider in this market sells the opposite.

Scheduling built around a Dubai week

Sessions sit in Gulf Standard Time around the school run, move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan on request, and can pause for travel without losing the tutor. None of that requires anyone to drive anywhere, which is why it is possible to offer it at all.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does a Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 home tutor cost in Dubai?+

Market rates in Dubai run roughly AED 45-150 an hour at the budget end, AED 150-300 for a qualified online subject tutor, and AED 180-500 for an in-home visit once travel is priced in. Specialist IGCSE and A Level tutors sit at AED 200-450 and above, and one premium provider publishes AED 650. Those figures come from EdFlik, Tutopiya, Unitors, TutorChase, BartyED and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai survey, read in October 2026. They describe the market rather than an IB Gram price list; our own route is a free trial lesson followed by a quote for the sessions a particular student needs.

Will a 0500 tutor come to our villa in Dubai Hills Estate?+

No. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses anywhere in the UAE, and in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Dubai lessons are delivered one-to-one on live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. The reason is not cost-cutting: it is that a Dubai Hills family restricted to tutors who can drive in by half past four chooses from a small pool, while a family online chooses a specialist who has marked 0500 scripts for years. If a physical presence in the room is essential to you, the market rate for that is AED 180-500 an hour and this page explains what sits inside that number.

Why is an in-home English rate in Dubai so much higher than an online one?+

Because an in-home fee is a teaching fee plus an unpaid driving fee. A tutor taking a 4:30pm slot in Arabian Ranches and a 6:30pm slot in Al Barsha spends about ninety minutes in traffic to earn two paid hours, and the quote has to recover that. Bestimate's in-home band starts at AED 180 for this reason while online observations start considerably lower. The second cost is choice: the pool shrinks to tutors who live nearby and are free at that hour, which matters more for a language paper than for arithmetic practice.

Is a cheaper undergraduate tutor good enough for 0500?+

For reading practice in Year 8 or 9, often yes. For a Year 11 candidate two grades below target, usually not. The budget band buys somebody who speaks excellent English; the mid and specialist bands buy somebody who can look at a summary answer and say that nine well-written lines contained four creditable points. That diagnosis is the service, and it is what moves a 0500 mark. A useful test before paying anybody: ask them to explain, in plain words, how the writer's-effects question is credited. The answer separates the bands quickly.

How many 0500 sessions a week should a Year 11 student in Dubai budget for?+

One session a week through the year, rising to two in the term before the written papers, covers most cases. At Bestimate's mid band that is roughly AED 600-1,200 a month for the single session and AED 1,000-2,000 or more during an intensive block. Three sessions a week is almost always a sign that work was left too late rather than a sign of ambition, and it buys the same hours at a worse price. The variable that actually matters is how many full compositions get marked and redrafted, not how many hours appear on the invoice.

Does the hourly rate normally include marking a whole Paper 1?+

Ask, because it varies and the answer changes the real price. Marking a full two-hour reading paper properly takes a tutor a substantial part of an hour, so some providers mark extracts, some charge separately, and some simply do not mark at all. With us, one full piece of written work is marked between sessions against the published descriptors and returned with two targets. If a quote looks unusually low, marking is the item most often missing from it, and it is the item that produces the grade change.

Does the MoHRE tutor permit change what we pay for 0500 lessons?+

It should not. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, with MoHRE listing a two-working-day completion time and no fee. So a tutor cannot justify a higher rate by citing licensing costs. The permit matters for a different reason: individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No official fine schedule has been published, so treat any specific amount quoted to you as unverified.

Can one tutor handle both 0500 and 0475 for the same student?+

Frequently, and in Dubai it is a common request because many schools enter both. The skills overlap in close reading and diverge sharply afterwards: 0500 Paper 1 asks a candidate to write in role from a text, while 0475 asks for a sustained argument about a writer's method, supported by memorised quotation. A tutor comfortable with both will usually split the week by paper rather than by subject. Doing so with one tutor saves scheduling friction and keeps the writing advice consistent, which matters more than it sounds.

What does the free trial cover before we pay for any 0500 sessions?+

A full sixty-minute one-to-one lesson with the proposed tutor, at no cost, with no card details taken and no obligation to continue. The trial works best when it covers one question type end to end, because that is when you can hear whether the tutor explains how marks are awarded or simply corrects mistakes. Send a recently marked script beforehand so the hour starts with real evidence. If the match is wrong, tell us and we propose a different tutor rather than asking you to make it work.

Do English tuition rates in Dubai rise closer to the June Cambridge series?+

Availability tightens rather than headline rates rising, and the effect on a family budget is the same. From February onwards the specialists with 0500 marking experience fill their Gulf Standard Time afternoon slots first, so late bookers choose between a less suitable tutor and an awkward hour. Booking a block in the autumn term costs less in total than an eight-week scramble in spring, because fewer sessions are needed when redrafting has had time to work. The cheapest intervention in this subject is always the early one.

Is English harder to move than maths, and does that change the hours we need?+

It moves differently rather than more slowly. A maths topic can be fixed in two sessions because the gap is usually a specific procedure. A 0500 grade moves when habits change: planning before writing, selecting points in a summary, explaining effect rather than naming devices. That takes repeated marked practice spread over weeks, which is why English support is better bought as a weekly habit than as a pre-exam block. Families who treat it like maths tend to buy more hours later and get less from them.

Who pays the Cambridge entry fee if my child sits 0500 as a private candidate?+

The family pays the exam centre directly, and the centre sets both the entry charge and its own administration fee. A tutor is not involved in that transaction and should not be quoting it. Timing matters more than the amount: Cambridge deadlines sit months ahead of the exam window in both series a Dubai candidate can sit, with the June entry closing in the spring and the November entry over the summer. Ask your chosen centre in writing which series it offers and what its cut-off date is.

Does a 0500 grade count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

On the British track, students must submit proof of five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. English normally counts as one of them, which is why a borderline grade has consequences beyond the school report. Verify the current requirements with the Ministry of Education or your emirate's attestation channel; IB Gram does not perform or guarantee equivalency.

Can we pause 0500 sessions during Ramadan without losing our tutor's slot?+

Yes, and many Dubai families instead move the session rather than pause it. School days shorten during Ramadan and concentration shifts, so an afternoon slot often works better in the late evening after Iftar. Because lessons run on video, that change costs nobody a journey and can be agreed week by week. If you would rather stop for the month, tell us and the slot is held. Nothing is charged for sessions that do not happen, and the marking cycle picks up where it left off afterwards.

Start with one marked script and a free trial lesson

If you have read this far, you probably already know whether your child's problem is reading or writing. Send the most recent marked script and we will tell you which of the four Paper 1 demands is costing the most marks, and roughly how many sessions it takes to move. The trial lesson is free, takes sixty minutes, and needs no card details. Lessons after that run one-to-one on live video to your household in Dubai, in Gulf Standard Time, with one full piece of written work marked between each pair of sessions. If the honest answer is that your child needs fewer hours than you expected, we will say so.
