1-to-1 IB Tutor in the UAE

A 1-to-1 IB tutor in the UAE spends the whole hour on one student, which is the only reason the rate sits above a seat in a group class. Published market figures across the Emirates run from roughly AED 45 to AED 650 for that hour. This page explains what moves a quoted number inside that range — level, subject scarcity, slot time, coursework supervision — before you agree to pay it. Lessons are delivered online, in Gulf Standard Time, and the first one is free.

  • One tutor, one student, live over video, every session
  • Every AED figure on this page carries the source that published it
  • A tutor marks and gives feedback; the writing stays the student's own
  • Home visits are an India-only service; UAE delivery is online

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

What you are actually buying when you pay for a one-to-one hour

A 1-to-1 IB tutor in the UAE costs more per hour than any other format on the market, and the reason is arithmetic rather than branding. In a group of six, an hour of teaching is shared six ways. In a school class of twenty-two, the same hour is shared twenty-two ways and the teacher is also running the room. Pay for one-to-one and the hour goes on one student's gaps: the question they cannot start, the graph they read backwards, the paragraph that loses four marks every single time. That is the product. Everything else here is about what the hour should cost, what moves the price, and how to tell afterwards whether the money did any work.

Rates published across the Emirates run from about AED 33 an hour at the budget online end to AED 650 for a tutor marketed on reputation. Bestimate's 2026 rate table for Dubai puts a visiting in-home tutor at AED 180 to AED 350 and a subject specialist at AED 200 to AED 450 or more. Those are other people's published prices, read in October 2026, and they describe the market you are shopping in rather than a price list of ours. IB Gram quotes against the plan a family actually needs, after a free trial lesson, which is why this page gives you the market's numbers instead of a headline rate.

Three things move a quoted figure more than anything else. Level comes first: a Higher Level Chemistry tutor is scarcer than a Standard Level one, and scarcity sets price. Subject comes second — English A and Business Management have deep tutor pools in the UAE, while Higher Level Physics, Computer Science and Arabic A have thin ones. Timing comes third. A 5pm Gulf Standard Time slot on a weekday is the most contested hour in the country, because the school run across Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi empties into it. A family who can take 8pm has more tutors to pick from and more room to ask for a longer block at the same rate.

IB Gram delivers one-to-one IB tuition as live online lessons in Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service run only in India, and nobody is dispatched to a UAE address. For a family in Al Ain or Ras Al Khaimah that distinction is the difference between a specialist and whoever happens to be nearby: the pool stops being thirty minutes wide and becomes the whole roster. It also takes travel out of the bill, and travel is what the two-hour minimum and the higher hourly figure on a visiting booking are really covering.

One last thing before the numbers. A tutor teaches, questions, marks and gives feedback on work the student has already produced. No sentence of an Internal Assessment, an Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay may come from the tutor's keyboard. One site competing for this search sells finished Internal Assessments at AED 3,750; under IB academic-honesty rules that purchase puts a whole Diploma at risk, and no saving on a tutoring bill is worth it. Paying for teaching is spending on a skill the student keeps. Paying for someone else's words is a malpractice file waiting to be opened.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Which programme your child sits changes how many one-to-one hours are worth buying and when. A Primary Years pupil needs short, frequent sessions; an MYP student needs the habits that survive the jump to the Diploma; a Diploma student buys hours against six subjects, three internal deadlines and one exam window.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP has no external exams, so one-to-one hours here are diagnostic rather than remedial. The usual reasons a UAE family books are an English-language gap after arriving mid-year, number fluency that has not kept up, or a child who will not write at length. Thirty or forty-minute sessions work better than sixty at this age, and the honest answer is often six to eight sessions rather than a standing weekly slot.

PYP pupils in the Emirates also carry Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the programme, and in Dubai those lessons are built on a 40-minute teaching unit. A new arrival with no Arabic is usually behind on script before anything else, and that is the cheapest gap to close early. Waiting until Year 6 turns thirty inexpensive hours into a hundred expensive ones later.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP marks against criteria A to D in every subject, which is where most families first meet the gap between knowing the content and answering to a command term. One-to-one time in Years 9 and 10 is the best-value money in the whole five years, because it is cheap preventive work: the student learns to read a criterion strand and write to it. The Personal Project in Year 11 needs process coaching, not content teaching.

Plenty of UAE schools run the MYP to Year 11 and then offer the Diploma, while others switch pupils to Cambridge IGCSE for two years. Those two routes need different preparation, and families often only discover which one their school uses in Year 9. Ask the coordinator before you buy a term of hours, because MYP-to-Diploma and IGCSE-to-Diploma have genuinely different gaps to close over one summer.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Diploma is where one-to-one spending concentrates and where it is most easily wasted. Six subjects, three of them Higher Level, each with an internal assessment, plus the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. A family who books two Higher Level subjects at one hour a week for two years is committing to roughly 140 hours. Deciding which two subjects, and which eight weeks of the year, is worth more than negotiating AED 20 off the rate.

IB programmes account for about 7% of Dubai private-school enrolment, so the local Diploma cohort is a minority inside a very large school market — 387,441 pupils across 227 schools in 2024-25. In practice that means a Higher Level Physics or Computer Science set at a UAE school can be five or six students, and a tutor who has taught that exact combination may live nowhere near you. Online delivery is what makes the match possible at all.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Tutor supply is not even across subjects, and supply is what sets the price of an hour. The list below flags where UAE pools are deep, where they are thin, and what the hour is usually spent on — so you can see why two quotes for the same programme arrive hundreds of dirhams apart.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The most-requested Diploma subject in the Emirates and the one with the widest spread of quoted rates. Higher Level AA carries proof, calculus depth and a Paper 3 that rewards stamina, and the tutor pool for it is thinner than for Standard Level. Hours here are best spent on unseen problems under the clock, not on re-teaching topics the student can already recite.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

A different course, not an easier one. AI leans on modelling, statistics and the graphic display calculator, and students who switched from AA mid-course often arrive with gaps in exactly the statistics content AI examines most. Check the entry requirements of any UAE engineering or computing degree before paying for a route change; some expect AA.

Physics

HL and SL

One of the thinnest tutor pools in the country at Higher Level, which is why Physics quotes sit at the top of the specialist band. Marks go on definitions, graph gradients with units, and the long-answer questions where a correct method earns nothing because it was never written down. The online whiteboard handles derivations better than a kitchen table does.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and energetics drive most requests, and Higher Level Chemistry is the subject UAE families most often struggle to cover locally. The scientific investigation is marked out of 24 and is worth buying feedback hours on at the planning stage, well before a write-up exists. A tutor can question a method; a tutor cannot supply one.

Biology

HL and SL

A deep pool of tutors and therefore the most competitive pricing of the three sciences. The marks are lost in command-term precision — describe, explain, outline, evaluate — and in data-based questions where students answer the biology instead of the graph. Sessions that end in a marked past-paper answer beat sessions that end in notes.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and the internal assessment commentaries are the usual reason for booking. Students lose marks by drawing a correct diagram and then not referring to it, and by writing commentary that summarises an article rather than applying a concept to it. Feedback hours before each commentary deadline are worth more than weekly content teaching.

Business Management

HL and SL

One of the easiest subjects to find a UAE-based tutor for, so the rate should sit in the middle of the market rather than the top. Most of the available marks sit in evaluation and in use of the case study, and that is a writing skill which responds quickly to one-to-one marking against the published criteria.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Deep tutor supply, wide quality spread. The Individual Oral and the Paper 1 guided analysis are where hours convert fastest, because both are structural problems rather than knowledge problems. A second language English speaker in a UAE school often needs comparison practice rather than more vocabulary.

English B

HL and SL

Frequently requested by families who arrived in the Emirates partway through secondary school. The marks are in text type conventions and register, which can be taught in short, frequent sessions. This is one of the few subjects where a 40-minute slot twice a week outperforms a single hour.

Arabic A and Arabic B

HL, SL and ab initio

A thin pool for Arabic A in particular, and a subject nearly every competitor leaves off its list entirely. Dubai schools must teach Arabic regardless of the licensed curriculum, so a student can be carrying school Arabic and Diploma Arabic at once. Sessions work on script fluency, written structure and the vocabulary load that a late starter never built.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Scarce at Higher Level across the Emirates, and often taught in very small school sets. Hours go on the paper-based algorithm questions students cannot practise on a screen, plus structured feedback on the solution-development process without a line of the student's code being written for them.

Psychology

HL and SL

Growing quickly in UAE schools and under-served by local tutors. The marks are in research-study recall tied precisely to the command term, and in an internal assessment that rests on an experimental method. Short weekly sessions with written feedback usually beat an intensive block here.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

One-to-one does not mean one shape of booking. The four below are priced differently because they consume different amounts of a tutor's week, and choosing the wrong one is the commonest way UAE families overspend on tuition.

Weekly one-to-one, one subject

A standing slot in Gulf Standard Time, one tutor and one student, with marking between sessions. This is the cheapest effective unit for a subject that is merely behind rather than in trouble, and the easiest to audit: a student who cannot show you a marked answer after four weeks is not being taught, they are being supervised.

  • 60 or 90 minutes, same tutor each week
  • Work set between sessions and marked before the next one
  • Cheapest format per unit of progress for a single weak subject
  • Easy to pause for mocks, Ramadan or travel

Pre-session intensive block

A short burst of hours in the six to eight weeks before a paper, built almost entirely of timed questions and mark-scheme work. Nothing new is taught. Rates for this kind of block sit at the top of the market because every family in the country wants the same weeks, so booking it in advance costs less than booking it in panic.

  • Two or three sessions a week for six to eight weeks
  • Timed questions, marked against published criteria
  • Booked ahead of the rush rather than inside it
  • Finishes before the exam window, not during it

Coursework feedback cycle

Hours bought around the internal assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge essay deadlines instead of weekly. The tutor reads what the student has produced, questions the method and the structure, and points at the criterion that is not being met. The student does the writing. This is the highest-value use of a small budget and the one with the strictest boundaries.

  • Scheduled against the school's internal deadlines
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, in their own words
  • Criterion-by-criterion, with the mark allocation named
  • No content supplied, no rewriting, no drafting on the student's behalf

Transition or catch-up block

A defined block of hours to close a known gap: MYP to Diploma, Cambridge IGCSE to Diploma, a CBSE or American arrival into Year 12, or an emirate move midway through a course. Priced as a block with an end date, so it does not quietly become a two-year subscription that nobody reviews.

  • Diagnostic session first, then a fixed number of hours
  • Aimed at a named gap, with a finish line
  • Common over the summer before DP1 starts
  • Reviewed at the end rather than rolled over automatically

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What a one-to-one IB tutor costs in the UAE, by format

  • Budget online hour: AED 33–150, usually a generalist or a university student
  • Qualified subject tutor online: AED 150–300, syllabus-specific with marking
  • IB or IGCSE specialist online: AED 200–450 and above
  • Visiting tutor at a UAE address: AED 180–500, commonly with a two-hour minimum
  • Monthly packages seen in this market: AED 799 for eight online sessions; AED 1,599–1,799 in-home

A one-to-one IB hour in the UAE is advertised anywhere between AED 33 and AED 650. The band is that wide because five different products are being sold under one word. A university student revising alongside a Year 10 pupil and a trained Diploma teacher marking Paper 3 answers are not the same purchase, and the market prices them accordingly.

The table below collects what providers in this market actually publish, read in October 2026. Each figure belongs to the company that published it, not to IB Gram. We do not run a public rate card, because the sensible number depends on the subject, the level and how many weeks are left; a family gets a quote after the free trial lesson, when there is something real to quote against.

Two patterns in the table matter more than the headline numbers. First, the in-home band overlaps the specialist band almost exactly — so paying for a visit often buys travel rather than expertise. Second, small-group pricing looks like a discount per student until you divide the hour by the headcount, which the next section does. Three of the better-ranked pages in this search publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars, a currency no UAE family is invoiced in.

Monthly packages are quoted in this market too: around AED 799 for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. A package is only cheaper per hour if the sessions are actually used, so ask what happens to an unused session and whether it expires. Ask also whether a quoted figure includes VAT, because a rate that turns out to be exclusive moves a monthly budget by a real amount.

02

Why the same hour is quoted at AED 150 and at AED 600

Parents comparing three quotes for identical work usually assume one provider is overcharging. More often the three quotes are pricing different risks. A tutor who teaches Higher Level Physics has fewer competitors than one who teaches Standard Level Biology, and a tutor who will mark a timed Paper 2 before Thursday is selling their evening as well as the lesson.

The drivers below are the ones that move a UAE quote materially. Level and subject scarcity between them explain most of the spread. Slot time explains a surprising amount of the rest: the 4pm to 6pm Gulf Standard Time window is the only one most families ask for, so it is the only one with no spare supply. Session length cuts the other way, because a 90-minute block costs a tutor less in switching time than two 45-minute ones.

Use the final column as a script. A provider who cannot say which level a tutor has taught, which board, how work gets marked, or what happens to a cancelled hour is quoting a number rather than a service. Ask for the private tuition work permit position too — it is free to hold, so there is no cost excuse for not having one.

Two practical levers are left once you know the drivers. Take a later slot, and the same tutor often has availability at a lower point in their own week. Buy 90 minutes rather than two separate hours, and the per-hour figure usually falls, because the tutor loses less time to setting up and winding down. Insist on being quoted in dirhams: a rate advertised in dollars shifts with the exchange rate on the day you pay it.

The attention arithmetic: one-to-one, a pair, a group of four, a class of twenty-two

Small-group tuition looks like the obvious saving. Four students at AED 120 each pays a tutor AED 480 for the hour, which is why centres offer it, and each family pays less than half a one-to-one rate. The question nobody in this search answers is what each student receives for that money.

Divide the hour by the headcount and the picture changes. In a pair, an even split gives each student thirty minutes of directed attention. In a group of four, fifteen. In a tuition-centre class of eight, under eight minutes. In a school class of twenty-two, under three — and that teacher is also managing behaviour, collecting work and answering the loudest hand. The split is never even in practice, which helps the confident student and nobody else.

That arithmetic does not make groups worthless. A group is a perfectly good way to work through a past paper everybody has already attempted, or to cover a topic nobody in the room has met. What a group cannot do is diagnose. A student who has been getting 4s for two years has a specific, personal reason for it — a misread command term, a missing algebra step, an essay structure that collapses in the third paragraph — and finding it takes a tutor watching one student work. That is the hour you are buying at the one-to-one rate.

The pair deserves a word of its own, because it is the arrangement families ask for most. Two siblings in one hour works when both sit the same paper at the same level in the same session; it works badly when one is in Year 11 and the other in DP2, which is the commonest version. Thirty minutes each, aimed at two different problems, is usually worse value than one child getting a full hour and the other getting one the following week.

One-to-one at a UAE address versus one-to-one over live video

Most families searching for a one-to-one IB tutor picture someone in the room, and that market genuinely exists in the Emirates: Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table puts a visiting tutor at AED 180 to AED 350, and in-home listings reach AED 500. Those bookings usually carry a two-hour minimum, because no tutor drives to Mudon or Khalifa City for sixty minutes. Monthly in-home packages in this market sit around AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour visits.

IB Gram delivers one-to-one IB tuition as live online lessons, timed to Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service offered only in India. That is a limit worth stating plainly rather than burying, and the comparison below is why we think it is the better buy for a UAE family rather than merely the cheaper one.

The decisive column is the tutor pool. A visiting arrangement limits you to specialists within a drive of your community, which for Higher Level Chemistry in Al Ain or Computer Science in Ras Al Khaimah may mean nobody at all. Live video makes the subject, not the postcode, the thing that decides the match. It also removes the twenty minutes at the start of a visit when a tutor is still parking, and makes the screen a shared whiteboard that keeps a record of every worked solution.

What a family needs at their end is modest: a laptop or tablet, a headset, and a connection steady enough for video, which in most UAE homes means sitting near the router rather than buying anything. A second device as a document camera helps in maths and the sciences, because a phone propped over a page lets the tutor watch the working appear rather than see only the answer. None of that adds to the hourly rate.

What a 60-minute one-to-one hour should actually contain

An hour of one-to-one teaching has a shape, and a parent who knows the shape can tell within a fortnight whether the money is working. The commonest failure in this market is not an unqualified tutor; it is an hour spent on homework supervision. The student is busy, the room is quiet, nothing is diagnosed, and four months later the grade has not moved.

The breakdown below is the structure our tutors work to for a Diploma or Cambridge IGCSE student. The two blocks that matter most are the diagnostic at the start and the timed practice near the end. Diagnosis is what you cannot buy in a group; timed practice under exam conditions is what converts knowledge into marks, and it is the first thing to disappear when a tutor is being paid to be agreeable.

Each right-hand column is something you can check without sitting in on the lesson. Ask to see a marked answer with a criterion or mark-scheme reference against it. Ask what was set for next week and whether it was looked at. If a student cannot name one thing they were doing wrong and can now do differently, the hour was supervision, and supervision is available at a quarter of the price.

If the shape is missing, ask for it before changing tutor. Plenty of capable teachers drift into homework help because that is what the student brings to the screen and nobody has said otherwise. Say that you want timed questions and a marked answer every week, and give it a fortnight. A tutor who adjusts was under-briefed; a tutor who cannot has been selling you an hour of company at a specialist rate.

06

Paying for coursework hours without crossing the academic-honesty line

The internal assessments are the best-value hours a Diploma family can buy and the most dangerous ones to buy carelessly. Best value, because a 20-mark exploration or a 24-mark scientific investigation is roughly a fifth of the subject grade and is produced over months rather than in two hours in a hall. Dangerous, because the work must be the student's own and because this search contains sites selling finished internal assessments for AED 3,750.

The boundary is not vague. A tutor may teach the skill, explain the criteria, question the method, point at a strand that is not being met, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not provide sentences, restructure the argument on the student's behalf, supply a research question, or edit the text to completion. The student's coordinator will be asked to confirm the work is authentic; buying words puts the whole Diploma at risk, and no grade is worth that trade.

Figures below are the published limits and mark allocations most UAE families ask about. Confirm the current numbers against your child's own subject guide or coordinator before planning around them, because the IB revises guides on a subject cycle and no syllabus document is reproduced on this site. Where hours are genuinely worth buying is early: at the planning stage, when a weak research question can still be replaced, rather than three days before submission when nothing lawful can save it.

When one-to-one hours are worth most: the calendar, counted backwards

Hours bought at the wrong time of year are the biggest avoidable waste in a UAE tutoring budget. Demand concentrates into the eight weeks before a session, which is when rates sit at the top of the market and the specialists are already booked. The same hours, bought three months earlier, cost less and do more, because there is still time to change something.

Cambridge and Pearson publish their dates, and those are the ones quoted below. Cambridge runs a June and a November series with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, and every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones. Using the wrong zone's timetable is a real risk: Cambridge states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after doing so. Ask your school's exams officer which zone your centre sits in before planning anything around a timetable you downloaded.

No IB session or results date is published on this page. The IB's own site could not be verified from this project, and a wrong date on a page like this would plan a family's year around fiction. Treat the May session as the one UAE schools sit, and confirm the exact window, the upload deadlines and the results date with your child's IB coordinator.

One scheduling point that costs families money every year: entries are made by the school, months before the papers. Cambridge's final entries for the March 2027 series fall on 27 November 2026, which is before most parents have thought about the exam at all. If a level or a tier needs changing, that decision belongs in the weeks before the entry deadline, and it is worth an hour of a specialist's time to get right.

Who regulates your child's school, and what that changes about hiring a tutor

Five bodies regulate private schools in the UAE, and which one holds your child's school file changes what you can read before you spend. Dubai sits with KHDA, which oversees the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain sit with ADEK, which supervises private-school licensing and accreditation. Sharjah's authority and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge both regulate private education and approve fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah sit with the federal Ministry of Education.

None of those bodies endorses a tutoring service, and IB Gram claims no approval, accreditation or partnership from any of them. What they give you is free diagnostic information: an inspection report names the subjects where attainment or progress is weak, which is a far better guide to where an hour should go than a general sense that maths is hard. A school rated well overall can still have one department that has lost two teachers in a year.

The permit question is separate and worth getting right. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts is published, so no figure is quoted here. Because the permit costs nothing, a tutor without one has no price-based excuse.

Ministry of Education equivalency: the cost nobody budgets for

Equivalency is the step that turns a school-leaving certificate into something a UAE institution or employer will accept, and it catches families late. It is a paperwork process run by the Ministry of Education and the emirate's attestation channel, not a teaching problem — and not something a tutoring company performs, guarantees or speeds up. What a tutor can do is tell you which grades the file will need while there is still time to earn them.

The British-track requirements are published. A student must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count of five, plus either one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. One page ranking for these searches tells UAE parents they need six IGCSE subjects. The published figure is five.

For the IB Diploma there is no points threshold quoted here, because none has been read on the Ministry's own site. Anyone publishing an IB equivalency score without that source is guessing with your child's year. Check moe.gov.ae or your emirate's attestation channel directly, start the file in the final year rather than after results day, and do not treat tutoring as a requirement of the process — it is not, and nobody should sell it to you as one.

Families arriving from an American-curriculum school have a different checklist. The published requirement there is a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, with at least 450 in SAT Math before applying. Those are test bookings with their own deadlines, so they belong on the same calendar as the exam entries rather than being discovered in the final term.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies: the hours outside the Diploma budget

Families costing a Diploma usually budget for six subjects and forget three. Private schools in the UAE are not obliged to follow a particular curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, and in Dubai those subjects are mandatory in every private school whatever the licensed international curriculum. They carry reports, they carry marks, and they take time out of the same evening as Higher Level Chemistry.

KHDA's mandatory-subject requirements are specific. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and it is advised that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes. Schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies; combined classes for both groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Education need KHDA's own sign-off to teach them.

There is one hard constraint on tutoring here. For the mandatory UAE subjects, using different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited. A tutor therefore works with the school's own material and the stream the child is placed in — not an imported workbook and not a parallel syllabus. That is an honest limit, and it is the opposite of what most of this market implies by listing Arabic as a subject chip and saying nothing else about it.

What a one-to-one tutor cannot fix, at any hourly rate

  • A diagnosable gap in one or two subjects: a good use of one-to-one money
  • Six subjects, eight weeks out: too little time for the number of hours required
  • A subject-choice mistake: advice helps, extra hours rarely do
  • A sleep or timetable problem: adding an appointment makes it worse
  • A promised grade: nobody can offer one honestly, at any price

A page about value owes you the other half of the argument. One-to-one tuition is a strong purchase for a diagnosable problem in one or two subjects. It is a weak purchase for everything else, and families who buy it for everything else are the ones who conclude that tutoring does not work.

Four hours a week across four subjects, bought in February of the exam year, will not raise six grades. A student who has not read the set texts is short of weeks, not hours. A student who misses sleep because the timetable already runs to 10pm does not need another appointment in it. A student who has chosen three Higher Levels against their own strengths has a subject-choice problem that a tutor can advise on and cannot solve. And nobody can promise a grade: the paper is marked by the board, and a provider promising a specific score is selling something they do not control.

The honest version is cheaper than the alternative. Pick the one subject where the gap is clearest, buy six to eight hours, insist on marked work and timed practice, and review it against the next assessment the school sets. If the marks move, extend. If they do not, change the tutor or the diagnosis rather than adding a second subject. That is how a UAE family spends AED 2,000 a month well, and it is the same method whether the rate is AED 180 or AED 450.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across the UAE

What a one-to-one hour costs, and what you can realistically book, changes with where you live — mostly because distance prices a visiting tutor and does nothing at all to an online one. Below is what families in each part of the country actually run into when they start pricing hours.

Dubai — Marina, JLT and Jumeirah

The deepest tutor supply and the most contested slots in the country. Visiting tutors quote the lower end of the in-home band here because travel is short, but 4pm to 6pm is booked solid. Families who take an 8pm online slot get a wider choice of specialists at the same rate.

Dubai — Arabian Ranches, Mudon and the Dubailand villa communities

A visiting tutor adds twenty to forty minutes of driving each way, and that is what pushes a quoted in-home rate towards the top of the AED 180 to 500 band and forces a two-hour minimum. Online removes both the travel charge and the minimum.

Abu Dhabi island and Al Reem

Good school supply, thinner tutor supply than Dubai, especially at Higher Level sciences. ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid tutoring of pupils at their own school, so the obvious local option is often not a lawful one. Online widens the pool past the island.

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas

Long school runs and late finishes mean a 4pm start rarely survives contact with traffic. A 6.30pm or 8pm online slot is both easier to keep and cheaper than paying a tutor for the half-hour they spent on the Sheikh Zayed bridge.

Al Ain

Fewer IB cohorts than the coast, inspected by ADEK rather than KHDA, and a genuinely small specialist pool. Families here have historically paid a travel premium or driven to Abu Dhabi. One-to-one online makes the rate the same as a Marina family's.

Sharjah — Al Nahda, Muwailih and Al Khan

Many pupils cross into Dubai for school, which eats the early evening. Sharjah's own authority approves fees, curricula and assessment methods for schools in the emirate, so option lists differ from Dubai's. Late online slots suit the commute better than any visiting arrangement.

Ajman and Umm Al Quwain

Private schools here sit under the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate regulator. Visiting IB specialists are scarce and quote accordingly; several families report being offered a group class as the only local option. Online pricing ignores the distance entirely.

Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah

The two emirates no competitor page in this market even mentions. A Higher Level specialist driving from Dubai would add two hours of travel to a one-hour lesson, which is why that booking is rarely offered and never cheap. Live video is the only format where the subject, not the postcode, decides the match.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai IB schools

Dubai had 227 private schools and 387,441 pupils in 2024-25, with IB programmes accounting for about 7% of enrolment. Seven more schools open for 2026-27, three of them IB, adding 16,846 places. A bigger market has not made Higher Level specialists easier to find — it has spread a small IB cohort across more campuses.

  • Dubai International Academy — Emirates Hills
  • Deira International School
  • Dubai American Academy
  • GEMS World Academy — Dubai
  • Uptown International School
  • Greenfield International School

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain IB schools

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain schools are supervised by ADEK, which oversees private-school licensing and accreditation in the emirate. Diploma sets outside the island can be small, and ADEK's ethics rules stop a school's own staff from tutoring their pupils for a fee — the two reasons an Abu Dhabi family ends up looking beyond the school gate.

  • Raha International School
  • GEMS World Academy — Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy

Schools are named here as context for the UAE IB market only. No affiliation, partnership or endorsement is implied, and families should confirm current programmes and inspection ratings on the relevant regulator's own site.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject, the level and two slots that work

The three facts that decide whether a specialist exists for you: subject, level, and the two windows in Gulf Standard Time your week can actually hold. Naming an 8pm fallback alongside a 5pm preference widens the pool considerably, because the early-evening slot is the one every family in the Emirates asks for first.

  2. 02

We cost the plan before anything is booked

You get a figure for the plan — how many hours, over how many weeks, with marking included or not — rather than a headline rate with extras discovered later. Where we think fewer hours would do, we say so. A quote that assumes a two-year commitment for a problem that needs eight weeks is not a quote, it is a subscription.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson, then a written diagnosis

One free trial lesson per subject, booked through the site, with no payment taken beforehand. The tutor's job in that hour is to find the specific error, not to be impressive. Afterwards you get it in writing: what is actually going wrong, which component the marks are leaking from, and how many hours it should reasonably take.

  4. 04

Weekly one-to-one hours with marking attached

A standing slot, the same tutor, work set between sessions and marked before the next one. Timed questions under exam conditions are part of every cycle from the first month, not something saved for the final six weeks when there is no longer time to act on what they reveal.

  5. 05

A review after every six to eight hours

We look at the school's most recent assessment beside the marked work from the sessions and decide one of three things: carry on, change the focus, or stop. Open-ended tutoring that nobody reviews is how a reasonable monthly figure turns into a year of spending with nothing to show for it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One student per session, with nothing shared

Every session we arrange is one tutor and one student. No group rate, no silent second student on the call, no hour split two ways while both families pay. The ratio is the product, and it is the only reason a one-to-one rate can be justified over a group seat.

Every AED figure here carries its source

The rates on this page are other providers' published prices, named and dated October 2026, because a market number without a source is a marketing number. Three of the better-ranked pages in this search publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars rather than the currency you are invoiced in.

A tutor pool wider than any commute

Because lessons run over live video, the Higher Level Physics specialist does not also have to live within a drive of Al Ain or Ras Al Khaimah. Scarce subjects stop carrying a local scarcity premium, and a small school cohort stops limiting what your child can be taught properly.

Feedback on the student's own work, and nothing beyond it

Tutors teach, question, mark and give criterion-level feedback. They do not supply sentences for an internal assessment, an Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay. This market contains sites selling finished coursework; the IB treats that as malpractice, and the student carries the consequence.

A trial before an invoice, and a review after

One free trial lesson per subject with no payment taken beforehand, a written diagnosis after it, and a review every six to eight hours against the school's own assessments. You should be able to see what the hours bought, in marked work, before deciding to buy more.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Why is the same one-to-one IB hour quoted at AED 150 by one provider and AED 650 by another?+

Because five different products share one word. Published UAE figures run from AED 33 to AED 52 at the budget online end up to AED 650 for a tutor marketed on reputation, with trained subject teachers between AED 150 and AED 300 and specialists from AED 200 to AED 450 or more, all read October 2026. The spread is mostly level and subject scarcity: Higher Level Physics, Computer Science and Arabic A have thin UAE pools. Slot time and whether marking is included between sessions explain much of the rest.

How much of a teacher's attention does my child lose in a class of twenty-two?+

Divide the hour by the headcount and an even split gives under three minutes each, and that teacher is also managing the room, collecting work and answering the loudest hand. The real split is never even, which helps confident students. This is arithmetic for comparison rather than a measured figure, but it is the reason a school class teaches a course well and still cannot find out why one student keeps losing the same four marks. Diagnosis is the thing one-to-one time buys.

Is small-group tuition at a third of the price the better buy?+

Sometimes. A group of four at AED 90 to AED 160 per student is good value for working through a past paper everyone has already attempted, or covering a topic nobody in the room has met. It is poor value for diagnosis, because fifteen even-split minutes is not long enough to watch one student work and find the specific error. The usual sensible answer is a short block of one-to-one hours to identify the problem, then group or school teaching to consolidate it.

What should I expect to see inside a 60-minute one-to-one lesson?+

Marked work handed back in the first five minutes, ten minutes of diagnostic questioning where your child talks more than the tutor, about twenty minutes of teaching aimed at the error found, then fifteen minutes of timed questions with no help offered, marked against the published criteria before the hour ends. The last two minutes set a specific task. If the hour was spent supervising homework, you bought supervision, which this market sells at a quarter of the price.

We asked for someone to teach our child at a Dubai address. Why is this delivered over live video?+

Home visits are a service IB Gram runs only in India; every UAE session is one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. The market for visiting tutors in the Emirates is real — Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table puts them at AED 180 to AED 350, with in-home listings reaching AED 500 and a two-hour minimum common. What that premium buys is travel. Online keeps the specialist and removes the drive, which matters most for subjects with thin local supply.

Does Higher Level cost more per hour than Standard Level, and is that justified?+

Yes, typically 20 to 40 per cent more in this market, and the reason is supply rather than difficulty. Fewer tutors have taught the Higher Level content and the additional paper, so fewer people can mark a Higher Level answer properly. The question worth asking is not whether the premium exists but whether this particular tutor has taught Higher Level cohorts, in which board, and for how long. A provider who cannot answer that is charging a Higher Level rate for Standard Level experience.

How do we judge what an hour bought rather than what it cost?+

Three pieces of evidence, all of which should exist without you asking. A dated, timed attempt at exam-style questions. A mark against it that quotes the criterion letter or mark-scheme point, not just a score. And a specific task set for next week that follows from the error found this week. Then compare the school's next assessment with the one before it. If the marks have not moved after six to eight hours, change the tutor or the diagnosis rather than adding a second subject.

Which parts of a science internal assessment are worth paying one-to-one time for?+

The planning stage, by a wide margin. The scientific investigation is marked out of 24 and a weak research question limits the mark no matter how well the write-up is done, so feedback hours are worth most while the question can still be replaced. Later hours go on data treatment and evaluation, where students lose marks for uncertainty handling and for conclusions the data does not support. Confirm the current criteria with your child's subject teacher, since the IB revises guides on a subject cycle.

Is it allowed to pay a tutor to read an Extended Essay draft?+

Reading and giving feedback is allowed and normal; supplying content is not. A tutor may teach argument structure and referencing, ask why a paragraph does not answer the research question, and point at where the criteria are not met. A tutor may not provide sentences, restructure the argument for the student or edit the text to completion. The essay has a 4,000-word limit and the words must be the student's own. Your child's coordinator will be asked to confirm authenticity, so the boundary protects the student, not the tutor.

Does a private tutor in the UAE pay for a permit, and is that cost inside our rate?+

No, and so it should not be. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, and the application runs through the MoHRE app, website and e-services. Tutoring without one brings fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Because it costs nothing, there is no price-based excuse for not holding one.

Does hiring a one-to-one tutor need anything from KHDA, ADEK or SPEA?+

No. Those bodies regulate schools, not your private arrangement with a tutor. KHDA oversees private-education quality in Dubai, ADEK supervises private-school licensing and accreditation in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and Sharjah's authority approves fees, curricula and assessment methods in that emirate. A tuition business with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA educational services permit, which is a different thing from an individual's work permit. IB Gram holds no regulator endorsement and claims none.

Will the Ministry of Education equivalency file add costs we have not planned for?+

The process itself is paperwork run through the Ministry and your emirate's attestation channel, and no tutoring company performs it or can speed it up. Where it can cost you is in grades: the British track needs five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that five, plus one Advanced Level at E or two AS subjects. Knowing that in Year 10 is free. Discovering it after results day is expensive.

Do Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies need one-to-one hours of their own?+

Often yes, and families routinely leave them out of the budget. They are mandatory in Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, they carry reports and they take time from the same evening as Higher Level subjects. One limit matters: for these subjects, using different or additional content without the Ministry's prior permission is prohibited, so a tutor works from the school's own material and the stream your child is placed in rather than an imported workbook or a parallel syllabus.

How does Ramadan change the number of hours we pay for in a month?+

Usually it changes the timing rather than the total. School days shorten, so an afternoon slot can start earlier, and many families move sessions to after Iftar, which suits tutors working to Gulf Standard Time. Eid weeks are typically skipped and made up later rather than billed. The practical advice is to decide the Ramadan pattern in advance and to protect whichever weeks sit closest to a mock or an internal deadline, because those are the hours that are hardest to replace afterwards.

If the connection drops in the middle of a paid hour, what happens to it?+

The tutor reconnects, and if the session cannot be completed the remaining time is rescheduled rather than treated as taught. Practical steps reduce the problem: use a wired connection or sit near the router, keep a phone as a backup camera, and have the tutor share the whiteboard file afterwards so nothing from the lesson is lost. One honest advantage over a visiting arrangement is that a dropped slot can usually be replaced later the same week, where a cancelled visit is often charged in full because the drive was committed.

If nobody in the UAE teaches my child's subject combination, what are we offered?+

We tell you, rather than quietly booking a generalist. Higher Level Physics, Computer Science and Arabic A have genuinely thin UAE pools, and small school sets make them scarcer. The options are a specialist based outside the Emirates teaching in your evening slot, a short block with a near-specialist to cover the parts they can teach properly, or a wait for the right match with a date attached. The one option we do not offer is a tutor who has not taught that level pretending otherwise.

How many weeks should we give one-to-one tuition before judging it?+

Six to eight hours of teaching, or roughly two months of a weekly slot, measured against the school's next real assessment rather than the tutor's impression. By then there should be marked timed work with criterion references, and your child should be able to name a specific error they can now avoid. If the marks have not moved and nobody can tell you why, the diagnosis was wrong. Changing tutor at that point is cheaper than extending a plan nobody is reviewing.

Is the first one-to-one lesson free, and what conditions come with it?+

One free trial lesson per subject, booked through the site, with no payment taken before it happens. The tutor's task in that hour is diagnostic, so bring your child's most recent marked assessment, the subject and level, the board where it applies, and any internal deadline that is close. Afterwards you receive a written view of what is going wrong and how many hours it should take. If the match is wrong, you owe nothing and we will try a different tutor.

Price the plan, not the hour

The hourly rate is the least useful number in this decision. What decides whether a one-to-one IB tutor in the UAE is worth the money is which subject you choose, which eight weeks of the year you buy, whether marked timed work exists afterwards, and whether anybody reviews it. Tell us the subject, the level and two slots that work in Gulf Standard Time, and we will cost the plan before you commit to anything. The first lesson is free, lessons run online one-to-one, and you should be able to see in marked work what the hours bought before you buy more of them.
