Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 tutor in Dubai should be able to show you, on paper, what has changed since week one. This page is about that evidence: what gets measured in the first session, what written work comes back marked each week, how to read a marked script, and why a mock grade can move while a topic test does not. Chemistry and physics in a single award, taught one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Baseline recorded in session one, in marks not impressions
  • Written work marked against the published Cambridge scheme
  • Loss categories tracked week by week, not totals
  • Plan changes when the evidence says it is not working

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Evidence first: what should change, and how you would know

Most tutoring is sold on reassurance and reported on in adjectives. A parent hears that a child is engaging well, growing in confidence, and making progress, and three months later the mock comes back where it was. The alternative is not harder, it is just more specific: record a baseline in marks at the start, mark every piece of written work against the published scheme, categorise each lost mark by cause, and watch whether the categories shrink. That is what this page describes for Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652, and it is the reason this page exists in the form it does.

0652 is a single award covering chemistry and physics. No biology. It produces one IGCSE grade and is entered at Core or Extended tier, with a multiple-choice paper, a structured theory paper, and a practical component sat either as a laboratory test or as its written alternative. The exact durations, mark totals and weightings are printed in the Cambridge syllabus document for the series your child is entered for, and that document — not a summary — is the thing to check at cambridgeinternational.org before planning anything.

There is a point about this code specifically that parents should hear early. 0652 is a smaller entry in Dubai than Coordinated Sciences 0654, Combined Science 0653 or the three separate sciences, and not every school in the emirate offers it. That matters because families searching for help with physical science sometimes discover, mid-conversation, that the statement of entry says 0654 or 0653 instead. The codes examine overlapping content through different paper structures, and preparing for the wrong structure wastes real money. Find the code before you buy anything.

What is useful about 0652 for a student who fits it: the two quantitative sciences, taught together, without the biology content load. The chemistry and physics in it carry the quantitative spine that A Level and IB Diploma science courses assume — the mole and concentration work, formula rearrangement, circuit reasoning, graph gradients. A student who takes 0652 and works properly on those blocks arrives at post-16 science with the right foundation, even though the award itself is a single grade rather than a double.

Lessons from IB Gram are one-to-one over live video, scheduled around Dubai school hours in Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are not a service we offer in the UAE; tutors are not sent to UAE addresses, and the reason this page recommends the online format is not convenience but matching. A tutor who holds both chemistry and physics at IGCSE depth is a specific person, and choosing by subject rather than by driving distance is how you get one. The practical consequence for a Dubai family is that the weekly slot is set by when your child concentrates best, not by when traffic on Al Khail Road allows a tutor to reach your community, and a 90-minute booking buys 90 minutes of teaching rather than 60 minutes plus a round trip somebody has to pay for.

At a glance

  • 0652 is chemistry and physics in one IGCSE grade, no biology
  • Core or Extended tier, set by the school and printed on the entry
  • Check the code before buying help: 0652, 0653 and 0654 differ
  • Baseline in session one, marked work every week after that
  • Loss categories tracked, so the plan is testable rather than hopeful
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Evidence looks different at each stage of a British-curriculum pathway, because what counts as a meaningful measurement changes. These are the four stages around 0652 and what you should expect to be able to see at each one.

Y9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9 and the tier decision

The year the school decides which science route and tier a student takes. Useful evidence at this stage is narrow: accuracy on calculation questions, quality of graph work, and whether practical write-ups score. Topic-test percentages are poor predictors because they are untimed and often open-book.

Dubai schools generally set science routes in the spring term of Year 9, so a family wanting a particular route has one term in which evidence can change the decision. The evidence a head of science responds to is marked written work under timed conditions, which is precisely what a well-run tutoring block produces as a by-product.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

0652 Year 10: building the record

Content is delivered across chemistry and physics, and this is the cheapest year in which to build an evidence habit. Marked scripts from Year 10 give a tutor a loss-category profile long before it matters, and the fixes are procedural at this stage rather than remedial.

Because Dubai schools run Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies alongside the licensed curriculum as KHDA requires, Year 10 evenings are more crowded here than in a UK comparison. A weekly marked task of twenty minutes beats a long session the student has no time to prepare for.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

0652 Year 11: moving the mock

The year the evidence becomes consequential, because mocks feed predicted grades. Progress shows up as loss categories changing shape: method marks appearing on calculations, data questions scoring fully, practical answers moving past one mark. The total often moves last, which is why categories are the better measure.

Dubai mocks typically sit in November and again in February or March. A tutoring plan that does not name which mock it is aiming at has no deadline, and plans without deadlines drift. The November mock is the one worth targeting, because the result still has time to change the spring picture.

POST16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

Where 0652 leads

A Level Chemistry or Physics, or IB Diploma sciences. Both assume the quantitative work 0652 contains: moles and concentration, formula rearrangement, circuit analysis, gradient and area from graphs. A single award at Extended tier with strong calculation evidence is a better foundation than a double award with weak calculation evidence.

Dubai sixth forms set their own science entry requirements and some ask for separate sciences outright. The 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools and 16,846 places, three of them International Baccalaureate schools, so the local post-16 options are widening rather than narrowing.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each content block below is paired with the evidence that shows whether it is secure. The point is to be able to answer the question a parent actually has — is this topic fixed? — with something other than an opinion.

Measurement, units and standard form

Core and Extended

The quiet foundation of both halves of 0652. Evidence of security: unit conversions correct without prompting, standard form handled in multi-step calculations, and answers carrying units. Where this is weak, every calculation topic in the award reads as weak too.

Atomic structure, bonding and formulae

Core and Extended

Electronic structure, ionic and covalent bonding, writing and balancing equations. Evidence: balanced equations produced unprompted in questions that do not ask for them explicitly, because the next step needs one. This is the gateway to all quantitative chemistry marks.

Stoichiometry and the mole

Extended emphasis

Relative formula mass, moles, reacting masses, concentration and volumes. Evidence: method marks appearing on scripts even when a final answer is wrong, and four written lines rather than a single number. The single most reliable predictor of an Extended-tier grade in 0652 chemistry.

Electrolysis and energy change

Core and Extended

Electrode products, electrolytes, exothermic and endothermic reactions. Evidence: electrode products predicted correctly when the electrolyte is changed, which separates a student who learned a rule from one who memorised one example.

Rates of reaction and reversible reactions

Core and Extended

Factors affecting rate, collision ideas, and where reversible reactions appear. Evidence: rate-graph questions answered from the gradient and the plateau rather than from a remembered sentence, and conclusions tied to the data shown.

Acids, bases, salts and the periodic table

Core and Extended

Acid and base reactions, neutralisation, salt preparation methods and group trends. Evidence: salt-preparation answers giving filtration, evaporation and crystallisation in the right order, which is a practical question answered in a theory paper.

Metals, fuels and environmental chemistry

Core and Extended

Reactivity, extraction, corrosion, air pollutants and fuels. Evidence: named substances in answers rather than general categories. Questions in this block reward specific chemical names and lose marks for vague descriptions of pollution.

Motion, forces and energy

Core and Extended

Speed, acceleration, distance-time and speed-time graphs, forces, moments, energy transfer, work and power. Evidence: gradient and area-under-graph questions answered correctly, and moments questions with the distances measured from the pivot.

Thermal physics and the particle model

Core and Extended

Particle behaviour, expansion, conduction, convection and radiation. Evidence: explanations referring to particle spacing and energy rather than to heat moving, which is the distinction the mark scheme is built on.

Waves, light and sound

Core and Extended

Wave properties, reflection, refraction, the electromagnetic spectrum and sound. Evidence: ray diagrams with the normal drawn and angles labelled to it. Without the normal, a correct explanation still loses the diagram marks.

Electricity and circuits

Core and Extended

Current, potential difference, resistance, series and parallel circuits, power and safety. Evidence: a sketched circuit appearing on the script before any calculation. Students who sketch first score reliably; students who calculate first do not.

Magnetism, electromagnetism and radioactivity

Core and Extended

Magnetic fields, the motor effect, electromagnetic induction at Extended tier, radiation types and half-life. Evidence: field directions drawn consistently, and half-life questions worked by systematic halving rather than estimated.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, distinguished by what evidence each one produces. All run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with written work submitted between sessions and returned marked.

Baseline and fortnightly review

A measured start followed by a review every second week against the same categories. The baseline session produces a written profile: accuracy by topic block, method marks lost on calculations, data questions scored, practical answers scored, and timing. Every review repeats those measures so movement is visible rather than asserted.

  • Same measures every fortnight, so comparison is possible
  • Written profile shared with you, not kept internally
  • A category that does not move triggers a change of approach
  • Suits families who want to see the data themselves

Weekly teaching with marked homework

The standard shape: one 60 or 90-minute session, a timed question set afterwards, and a marked return before the next session. Marks are attributed point by point against the published mark scheme, and missed marks carry a written reason. This is what builds the record a school will actually look at.

  • One strand per session, chemistry or physics
  • Timed set after each session, 20 to 40 minutes
  • Marked against the published scheme, point by point
  • Reasons written next to every mark not awarded

Mock-to-mock sprint

A defined run of sessions between the November mock and the spring one, aimed at specific loss categories identified from the November script. Finite by design, with a stated target: which question types should score next time. Ends with a review of the spring mock rather than drifting into the exam series.

  • Starts from the marked November mock, not a syllabus list
  • Targets named question types, not whole topics
  • Finite number of sessions agreed in advance
  • Reviewed against the spring mock script

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Find the code before you buy anything

Physical Science 0652 sits alongside several other Cambridge science routes that cover overlapping content through different paper structures, and in Dubai the entry code on the statement of entry is the only reliable way to know which one a student is actually sitting. Families regularly arrive certain their child is on physical science and discover the school entered coordinated or combined science instead. The content overlaps enough for the confusion to be reasonable and the paper structures differ enough for the error to be expensive.

The practical differences are worth laying out. 0652 covers chemistry and physics and produces one IGCSE grade. Combined Science 0653 covers all three sciences and produces one grade. Coordinated Sciences 0654 covers all three and produces a double award, reported as two grades. Separate sciences — 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry, 0625 Physics — are three entries with three grades and more depth in each. All are tiered at Core and Extended except where a school's choice removes the option, and each has its own practical arrangement.

Which one suits a student is a school decision informed by timetable, set placement and post-16 intentions. Where a family has a view, the conversation to have is with the head of science, and the evidence that carries weight in it is marked timed work rather than classwork. A student wanting to move from combined to physical science, or from physical science to separate sciences, is asking the school to make a judgement about capacity, and the school will look at assessment data to make it.

The table below is the version of this comparison to take into that conversation. Verify the component detail for your child's series on cambridgeinternational.org, because Cambridge publishes a syllabus document per series and the one that matters is the one your child is entered for, not the one that was current when a page like this was written.

What gets measured in the first session

A baseline is not a test score. It is a profile of how marks are being lost, recorded in a form that can be compared six weeks later. Without one, a tutor is guessing and a parent is trusting, and neither of those produces a decision when the mock result arrives. The first session on 0652 therefore does something slightly unusual: it spends most of its time watching the student work rather than teaching.

Five things get recorded. Accuracy by topic block, so chemistry and physics are separated rather than averaged. Method marks on calculation questions, counted separately from correct answers, because a student losing method marks has a different problem from one getting wrong answers. Data-question performance, because answering from memory rather than from the figure is a distinct and common failure. Practical-component answers, which on 0652 are a fifth of the award and often untaught. And timing, measured by how far through a timed set the student gets rather than by how it felt.

Those five measures produce a profile rather than a grade, and the profile is what the plan is built from. A student scoring poorly overall but losing almost everything on method marks needs four sessions on calculation discipline, not a term of content. A student whose topic accuracy is fine and whose timing collapses needs paper practice, not teaching. A student weak across both halves of the award needs a content rebuild in syllabus order, and should be told that honestly rather than sold a six-week sprint.

The profile is written down and shared with the family, including the version that says tutoring is not the right purchase this term. That happens more often than the industry admits: a student with secure content, good timing and no practical preparation needs four sessions and better marked practice at school, not a weekly commitment through to June.

Twelve weeks of 0652 support, week by week

Plans that exist only as a description drift. A plan with a week number against each piece of work does not, because the absence of the work is visible. What follows is the shape a twelve-week block typically takes for a Year 11 student on 0652 with a mixed baseline: calculation discipline weak, physics content broadly present, chemistry quantitative work shaky, practical component untaught.

The front half targets procedure rather than content, because procedural gains show up fastest and they make the content work that follows measurable. Weeks one to three install the calculation method, the sketch-first rule for circuits, and the annotate-first rule for data questions. Weeks four to six take the weaker half of the award — usually chemistry — in syllabus order, with a timed set after each session. Weeks seven to nine do the practical component as a discrete block, because it is a fifth of the award and the rules are generic. Weeks ten to twelve are timed papers, reviewed against the scheme.

Each week produces one marked artefact. Not a report: a script, with the marks attributed and the misses explained. Those twelve scripts are the record, and they answer the question a term report cannot, which is whether a specific category of loss is shrinking. If the method marks are still absent in week eight after four weeks of drilling, the method drilling was the wrong intervention and something else is going on — frequently the underlying algebra, occasionally an attention or processing issue that needs a different conversation entirely.

The plan is also deliberately finite. Twelve weeks ends, and ending forces a judgement: continue with a new target, stop, or change approach. Open-ended weekly tutoring is comfortable for everyone involved and it is where families spend the most for the least visible return.

How to read a marked 0652 script

  • Bare answers on calculations: method marks forfeited, procedural fix
  • Answers ignoring a printed figure: memory instead of data
  • Evaluations criticising the student rather than the method: no marks
  • A blank final page: timing, not knowledge

Most parents are handed a total and a grade, and a total hides everything useful. Reading a script properly takes about ten minutes and tells you what three term reports will not. The question is always the same: of the marks that were not awarded, what kind of mark were they?

Start with calculation questions. If the final answers are right, the marks are there and nothing needs doing. If the final answers are wrong but working is laid out in steps, method marks will have been awarded and the problem is arithmetic or a single misremembered relationship — a narrow, quick fix. If answers are bare numbers with no working, method marks have been forfeited whether the thinking was right or not, and that is a procedural problem worth more marks than any topic.

Then look at the data and graph questions, the ones where a table or figure is printed. If the answer does not refer to the figure, the student answered from memory. This is the most common single failure among well-revised students and it is why a high-effort student can plateau. Next, the practical-style questions: an evaluation that says the student should have been more careful has scored nothing, and an evaluation naming an uncontrolled variable or an inadequate measurement resolution has scored. Those two answers look similarly long on the page and are worth completely different amounts.

Finally, look at where the script stops. An unfinished paper is a timing problem and it is diagnosed separately from everything else, because the fix is question order and time allocation rather than content. A student who scores well on everything they attempted and leaves the last page blank does not need more teaching; they need to be taught to leave a question rather than fight it. Four categories, ten minutes, and you know what the next six weeks should contain.

05

Why a mock grade moves when a topic test does not

Families often see a confusing pattern: topic test scores stay flat while the mock moves, or the reverse. Both are explicable, and understanding why keeps a reasonable plan from being abandoned at the wrong moment.

Topic tests are usually untimed or generously timed, focused on one block, and sometimes sat with notes available. They measure recall of recently taught material. Mocks are timed, cover the whole award, mix question types, and include the practical component. A student whose problem is procedural — no working shown, data ignored, poor timing — can score reasonably on topic tests for months and still underperform on every mock. Fixing the procedure moves the mock and leaves topic tests exactly where they were, which looks like nothing changing if topic tests are the only data a parent sees.

The reverse pattern has a different cause. A student who starts scoring better on topic tests while the mock stays flat is usually learning content in the week it is taught and not retaining it across the award. That is a revision-structure problem, not a teaching problem, and the fix is cumulative marked practice rather than more teaching hours. It is also why marked work on older topics matters: a question set that only covers this week's material cannot detect the issue.

Tier interacts with all of this. A Core-tier candidate has a grade ceiling, so improvement eventually stops being visible in grade terms even as marks rise. An Extended-tier candidate placed there optimistically can work hard and see very little movement, because the papers assume a foundation that is not yet built. Neither situation is a tutoring failure, and both need saying out loud rather than discovering in June. Where tier looks wrong, the school decides, and marked timed work is the evidence it responds to.

06

The chemistry half of 0652, in evidence terms

  • Wrong by a factor of ten: a units problem, not a chemistry one
  • Right for the taught example, wrong for the question's variation: rule not learned
  • Long answers with few ticks: naming, not knowledge
  • Method marks missing: four-line calculation discipline

Chemistry in 0652 is where the quantitative marks live, and it is where a marked script is most informative. Three evidence patterns recur in Dubai cohorts, and each implies a different intervention.

The first pattern is correct chemistry with absent arithmetic. Equations balanced, products identified, reasoning sound, and then a reacting-mass calculation producing a number that is out by a factor of ten or a unit. This is a standard-form and unit-conversion problem presented as a chemistry problem, and it resolves in a few weeks of deliberate practice on conversions rather than on chemistry. Ignoring it and teaching more chemistry is the commonest way a term of tutoring produces no visible change.

The second is memorised rules misapplied. Electrode products given correctly for the electrolyte the student met in class and wrongly for the one in the question. Reactivity-series answers that work until the question uses a metal in an unfamiliar position. Salt-preparation methods recited in the wrong order. All of these are the same underlying issue: content learned as instances rather than as a rule, and the examiner's variation exposes it. The fix is to teach the rule and then test it on deliberately unfamiliar cases, which is a four-to-six-session job.

The third is vagueness in the environmental and extraction content, where questions reward named substances and students write general descriptions. This is the quickest of the three to fix and the easiest to overlook, because the answers look complete. A marked script shows it immediately: long answers, few ticks. Once a student sees that pattern on their own paper, the correction tends to stick without much repetition.

07

The physics half of 0652, in evidence terms

Physics in 0652 produces cleaner evidence than chemistry because the failures are more visibly procedural. On a marked script, four things show up repeatedly, and three of them are visible without reading a single answer.

The first is the absence of a sketch. A circuit question answered without a drawn circuit, a moments question without a labelled diagram, a refraction question without the normal drawn. These are visible at a glance and they correlate strongly with lost marks, because the diagram is both a thinking tool and in several cases a scoring component in its own right. Enforcing sketch-first on every question for a few weeks produces a measurable change in the next marked set.

The second is graph work: axes chosen so the points occupy a corner, best-fit lines drawn through the first and last point, gradients calculated from the plotted points rather than from the line. Graph marks appear in both the theory paper and the practical component, so this is paid twice. The third is unit and prefix handling, particularly milli and kilo in electrical questions, which is the physics version of the chemistry arithmetic problem and responds to the same drilling.

The fourth is less visible and more important: reasoning questions about what happens when something in a described setup changes. Add a resistor in parallel, move the pivot, increase the frequency. These questions separate grades at Extended tier because they cannot be answered from memory, and the only preparation that works is repeated practice on the question style with the student making the prediction before any calculation. That is a slow kind of session and the one that produces the most durable gains in this half of the award.

08

Predicted grades, school reports and what KHDA bands mean

Evidence has an audience beyond the family. Predicted grades affect sixth-form and university conversations, set placement affects what a student is taught, and both are decided by schools using their own data. Knowing what that data looks like helps a parent participate rather than react.

Predicted grades in Dubai schools are generally built from mock performance plus teacher judgement, which is why the November mock matters disproportionately. A student with marked timed work showing a clear upward trend in specific question types has something to contribute to that judgement; a student with good classwork and a weak mock does not. This is the most practical reason to keep marked scripts: they are the only form of evidence that resembles the evidence the school itself is using.

Dubai private schools are inspected annually by KHDA on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak, and the band tells a parent about the school rather than about their child. It is useful context — a school's published inspection report comments on teaching and on assessment practice — and it is not a proxy for an individual student's progress. Abu Dhabi schools are inspected by ADEK, Sharjah's by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, and schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities also approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods, which is a broader remit than inspection alone.

One piece of genuine good news for budgeting: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. A flat fee year makes a defined twelve-week tutoring block easier to commit to, which is the shape this page recommends over an open-ended weekly arrangement.

09

The honest limits of progress evidence

  • Session marks are not exam-hall marks; timed full papers close the gap
  • No grade promises, with or without evidence
  • No tutor produces assessed work; the practical component is taught, not done for the student
  • Coverage limits stated before booking, not after

Evidence is better than reassurance and it is not a guarantee of anything. Four limits are worth stating plainly, because a page that promises measurement without stating its boundaries is doing the same thing as a page that promises outcomes.

First, marks measured in a tutoring session are not marks measured in an exam hall. A student who performs under one-to-one conditions and freezes in a hall has an exam-conditions problem that marked homework will not detect. Timed, unsupported, full-paper practice is the closest available approximation, and it should be part of any plan in the final weeks for exactly this reason. Second, no tutor can promise a grade on 0652 or on anything else, and no amount of evidence changes that. What evidence provides is an early, honest answer about whether the current plan is working.

Third, there is no coursework on 0652, which removes a temptation that exists on other qualifications but also removes a source of guaranteed marks. The nearest equivalent is the practical component, and a tutor's role there is to teach the skills and mark the student's own work. No tutor should be producing, drafting or completing any assessed work for a student, on this syllabus or any other; on IGCSE science the question rarely arises, and the principle holds anyway.

Fourth, availability. A 0652 tutor must hold both chemistry and physics at IGCSE depth, and Gulf Standard Time evening slots are the most contested in the week. Where no UAE-based specialist is free for the combination and time you need, you will be told, and the alternative offered is an experienced IGCSE science tutor working from India to your time zone, disclosed before you book. That is a real limit, and concealing it behind a promise of instant matching would be the dishonest option.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

School reporting culture varies across Dubai, and it changes what evidence a family already has before tutoring starts. These notes are about data: what the school gives you, and what you will have to generate yourself.

Bur Dubai and Al Mankhool

Large schools with frequent assessment cycles and detailed subject reports. Families here usually arrive with plenty of percentages and no marked scripts, which is the wrong kind of data for planning a science block.

Karama and Oud Metha

Established schools with big Year 11 cohorts where internal ranking is visible to parents. Useful for spotting a problem early, less useful for diagnosing it, because a rank does not say which question types failed.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

Apartment-dense communities feeding a wide spread of schools. Mid-year transfers are common, and a transfer student's prior reports often describe a different scheme of work entirely.

Dubai Marina, JBR and JLT

Schools in this cluster tend to report against targets rather than raw marks, so parents see expected-grade language without the underlying script. Asking for the marked paper is the single most useful request a parent can make.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several higher-education campuses, with schools that often run detailed data tracking. Where tracking exists, a tutor can target precisely; the risk is confusing a tracking spreadsheet with evidence of what a student can do under time.

The Greens and Barsha Heights

Smaller cohorts and more individual teacher contact, so verbal feedback is plentiful and written evidence is thin. A weekly marked task fills that gap quickly and gives the school something concrete to respond to.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Mid-fee schools with regular formal assessments and reports issued each term. Term reports arrive after the window in which they could have changed anything, which is why a parallel record built week by week matters.

Al Qusais and Muhaisnah

Dense school provision with large science departments and set-based teaching. Set movement here is driven by internal assessment evidence, so a student with marked timed work has a stronger case than one with good classwork.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Bur Dubai, Karama and Oud Metha

A long-established cluster of British-curriculum schools with large Year 10 and 11 science cohorts and a strong culture of formal internal assessment. Students we support from this cluster usually have abundant percentage data and no marked scripts, so the first task is generating a usable baseline.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Confirm the syllabus code

Send the statement of entry. 0652, 0653 and 0654 cover overlapping content through different paper structures, and tutoring aimed at the wrong structure is the most expensive avoidable error on this family of syllabuses. The entry also gives the tier and the practical paper number.

  2. 02

    Baseline session at no charge

One trial lesson per student, no card details taken. The session measures five things — topic accuracy by half of the award, method marks, data questions, practical answers and timing — and produces a written profile. If the profile says four sessions rather than a term, that is what you are told.

  3. 03

    Agree a finite block

A named number of weeks with a target stated in question types rather than grades, a weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, and an agreed piece of written work each week. Finite blocks end, and ending forces a decision instead of a renewal.

  4. 04

    One marked artefact every week

Each session sets a timed question set. It returns marked against the published Cambridge scheme, with every mark attributed and every miss explained in writing. Those scripts accumulate into the record a head of science will actually engage with.

  5. 05

    Review and decide

At the end of the block, the scripts are compared against the baseline profile category by category. If a category has not moved, the approach changes rather than repeating. Sometimes the correct decision is to stop, and that is said plainly when it is true.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A baseline you can see

Week one produces a written profile in marks: topic accuracy by half of the award, method marks, data questions, practical answers, timing. Everything afterwards is measured against it, so progress is a comparison rather than an opinion.

Scripts, not reports

Written work comes back marked against the published Cambridge mark scheme with marks attributed point by point and misses explained. That is the form of evidence schools use for predicted grades and set movement, which is why it is the form we produce.

Both sciences from one tutor

0652 is chemistry and physics in a single award, so the tutor holds both at IGCSE depth. Teaching online is what makes it possible to match on that combination rather than on who is within driving distance of your community.

Finite blocks with stated targets

Twelve weeks with a named target in question types, not an open-ended weekly arrangement. Blocks that end force a judgement about whether they worked; arrangements that renew quietly do not.

The plan changes when evidence says so

If a loss category has not moved after several weeks of work aimed at it, the intervention was wrong and something else is going on. You hear that rather than a reframed version of the same plan.

Limits stated in advance

No grade promises, no regulator or board accreditation claims, no statistics without a source, and no quiet routing of a UAE family to a tutor elsewhere. IB Gram runs no premises in the UAE, which the page says rather than implies.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 actually cover?+

0652 is a single-award IGCSE covering chemistry and physics, with no biology content. It produces one IGCSE grade and is entered at Core or Extended tier, with a multiple-choice paper, a structured theory paper and a practical component sat either as a laboratory test or as its written alternative. The chemistry includes bonding, stoichiometry, electrolysis, rates, acids and bases and organic material; the physics includes motion, forces, energy, thermal physics, waves, electricity and radioactivity. Check the syllabus document for your child's series on cambridgeinternational.org for the exact components.

Is 0652 the same as Combined Science or Coordinated Sciences?+

No, and the difference matters when you buy tutoring. Combined Science 0653 covers all three sciences for one grade. Coordinated Sciences 0654 covers all three and gives a double award, reported as two grades. Physical Science 0652 covers chemistry and physics only, for one grade. Each has its own paper structure, so preparing for the wrong one wastes money. Dubai families regularly find the statement of entry says something different from what they assumed, so confirm the code before any sessions are booked.

Do many Dubai schools offer 0652?+

It is a smaller entry here than Coordinated Sciences 0654, Combined Science 0653 or the separate sciences, and not every Dubai school offers it. That is worth knowing because a search for physical science help often ends with the discovery that the school entered a different code. If your child's school does offer 0652, the head of science is the person who can confirm the tier and which practical paper is entered, both of which are printed on the statement of entry in any case.

What should a tutor measure in the first 0652 session?+

Five things, recorded in marks rather than impressions: topic accuracy with chemistry and physics counted separately, method marks lost on multi-step calculations, performance on questions where the answer is in a printed figure, practical-component answers, and how far through a timed set the student reaches. Those five produce a profile that tells you what the plan should contain. A first session that produces only a general sense of the student's level has not given you anything you can compare against in six weeks.

How do I read my child's marked science script myself?+

Look at four things. On calculation questions, are answers bare numbers or laid out in steps? Bare numbers forfeit method marks regardless of the thinking. On questions with a printed table or graph, does the answer refer to the figure or to memory? On practical-style questions, does the evaluation name a weakness in the method or say the student should have been more careful? The second scores nothing. And where does the script stop? A blank final page is a timing problem, diagnosed and fixed separately from content.

Why did my child's mock improve when their topic tests did not?+

Because the two measure different things. Topic tests are usually untimed, cover one block and sometimes allow notes, so they test recent recall. Mocks are timed, cover the whole award, mix question types and include the practical component. Fixing procedural habits — showing working, reading the figure, managing time — moves a mock substantially and leaves topic tests exactly where they were. If topic tests are the only data you see, genuine progress can look like nothing happening at all.

My child works hard on 0652 and the marks are not moving. What should I check?+

Three things in order. Whether calculation answers show working, because effort spent on content cannot recover forfeited method marks. Whether unit conversions and standard form are secure, since an arithmetic weakness presents convincingly as a chemistry or physics weakness. And whether the tier is right: an Extended-tier candidate placed optimistically can work hard against papers that assume a foundation not yet built, and see very little movement. All three are visible on a marked script within about ten minutes.

How long before tutoring shows up in a 0652 result?+

Procedural changes appear in marked homework within two or three weeks and in a mock at the next sitting. Content rebuilds take a term, because the material has to be taught and then retained across the whole award rather than for one test. Practical-component work shows up as soon as the next paper containing practical-style questions. What should never take three months to appear is evidence of direction: if no loss category has changed shape after six weeks, the intervention was wrong and the plan should change.

Should we target the November mock or the spring one?+

November, if there is a choice. Dubai schools generally run mocks in November and again in February or March, and predicted grades draw heavily on them. A November result still leaves time for the spring picture to change, and it gives both the school and the family real data at a point where decisions about tier and set are still open. Aiming a plan at the spring mock compresses everything into the same weeks when every Year 11 family in the emirate is competing for the same tutoring hours.

Does the practical component need separate preparation on 0652?+

Yes. It carries roughly a fifth of the award, is common to both tiers, and is frequently untaught beyond school laboratory time. The marks go to rules rather than talent: the results table drawn before readings are taken, graph scales filling the grid, a best-fit line through the trend, anomalies named explicitly, a conclusion answering the question asked, and an evaluation identifying a specific weakness in the method. Four to six sessions usually covers it, and the gain also shows up in theory-paper practical-style questions.

Can a 0652 tutor help if my child is in the Core tier?+

Yes, and the work is different from Extended-tier work rather than easier. Core-tier tutoring concentrates on completeness and precision: making sure every question receives a scoring answer, that command terms are answered in the right register, and that calculation questions show working. It also addresses the ceiling honestly, because a Core entry caps the achievable grade. If a tier change is the aim, the school decides on its own assessment evidence, and marked timed work is what that evidence looks like.

What evidence does a head of science respond to in a set or tier discussion?+

Marked timed work, because that is the same kind of evidence the school generates itself. Classwork, verbal feedback and parental impressions carry much less weight, and reasonably so. A folder of weekly scripts showing a specific question type moving from unscored to scored over six weeks is a concrete argument. A request based on effort is not. The conversation also has a deadline, since changing an entry after submission is an administrative process rather than a teaching one.

Do KHDA inspection bands tell me anything about my child's science progress?+

They tell you about the school, not the student. Dubai private schools are inspected annually by KHDA on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, and the published report comments on teaching quality and assessment practice across the school. That is useful context when choosing a school and close to useless as a measure of one child's progress in one subject. For that, the only reliable source is marked work from your own child under timed conditions.

What if no 0652 specialist is free when we need lessons?+

You will be told before booking rather than after. A 0652 tutor needs both chemistry and physics at IGCSE depth, and weekday evening slots in Gulf Standard Time are the most contested in the week. Where no UAE-based specialist is available for your combination and time, the alternative offered is an experienced IGCSE science tutor working from India to Gulf Standard Time, stated openly. Quietly routing a UAE family to a tutor elsewhere without disclosure is a practice this market has, and we do not.

Are lessons for 0652 delivered at our home in Dubai?+

No. Home visits in the UAE are not a service IB Gram provides, and no tutor will be sent to a UAE address. Lessons run one-to-one over live video with a shared whiteboard and the paper on screen, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around school hours and activities, and they move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan. For this syllabus the online format is also the better match: a tutor who holds both chemistry and physics at IGCSE depth is a specific person, and you choose from everyone who does rather than from whoever is nearby.

Ask for the script, not the summary

If you do one thing after reading this, ask your child's school for the marked science script rather than the percentage. Ten minutes with it will tell you whether the lost marks are method marks, memory-instead-of-data answers, practical technique or timing, and those four categories point to four different plans with very different costs. Send the script and the statement of entry, and the baseline session will put numbers against each category and say how many weeks each one needs. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, around Dubai school hours.
