IB Chemistry Tutor in Downtown Dubai

Most families look for an IB Chemistry tutor in Downtown Dubai in late October, when organic mechanisms arrive and a confident student stops being confident. IB Gram pairs your child with a Chemistry HL or SL specialist and runs the lesson live online, in Gulf Standard Time, in whatever hour the Downtown school day leaves open. The first lesson costs nothing. Keep the tutor if the explaining works, change them if it does not.

IB & IGCSE in Downtown Dubai

The October problem, and why it lands hardest on a Downtown timetable

IB Chemistry has a predictable breaking point. For the first six or eight weeks of DP1 the course rewards the same habits that worked at IGCSE: learn the definition, apply the formula, check the units. Then Structure 3 arrives with functional groups, Reactivity 3 arrives with proton and electron transfer, and the subject starts asking students to explain why a reaction goes the way it goes. Students who memorised their way through 0620 or 4CH1 hit that wall in October and November of DP1, and that is when the searches start.

Downtown Dubai makes the timing worse rather than better, for a structural reason. There is no private school inside the district, so every child here is bussed out: to Sobha Hartland and Meydan in the south-east, to Oud Metha and Al Garhoud across the creek, or north to Al Safa and Al Satwa. The day that starts with a 6.50am lobby pickup ends with a return somewhere between 3.45pm and 5.00pm, and two afternoons a week are usually taken by a co-curricular commitment. By the time a DP1 student in a Boulevard tower sits down with chemistry homework, they have been awake for twelve hours.

That matters because chemistry homework is the least forgiving kind. A mechanism that is half-understood produces an answer that looks plausible and earns nothing. A student can write three curly arrows in the wrong places and feel they have done the work. The feedback loop is slow — the school marks it a week later, by which point the class has moved to the next sub-theme — and the gap compounds quietly until a mock paper makes it visible in February.

A weekly online session placed in the hour your child can actually think closes that loop to seven days. The tutor sees the mechanism being drawn, interrupts at the wrong arrow rather than after it, and uses the published mark scheme wording to show what a four-mark explanation contains. Because the lesson runs over live video from the apartment, nobody is budgeting 45 minutes each way on Al Khail Road, which is the only reason a 6.15pm start is realistic at all. IB Gram does not operate home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India.

This page is written around the shape of the Downtown week: which schools the district feeds, when a session fits, what the 2023 Chemistry guide actually examines, where the marks go, how Ramadan and the Dubai calendar move the plan, and what the market charges. The tables are the part worth printing. If you read only one of them, read the cost table, because the gap between the cheapest published rate in this market and the most expensive is a factor of nearly twenty, and the difference in what a Chemistry HL student actually gets for the money is nothing like that wide. Buying fewer, better-aimed hours beats buying more of them, and the theme table tells you where to aim.

  • The common breaking point is Structure 3 and Reactivity 3 in DP1 autumn
  • Downtown has no school of its own; children commute out every morning
  • Paper 1 is 36%, Paper 2 is 44%, the investigation is 20%
  • A data booklet is supplied for both written papers, and students under-use it

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry requests from the central corridor come from three places: students already inside an IB continuum, students arriving from a British Year 11, and students who joined a Dubai school mid-DP from another country. The content gap differs in each, and the first session is diagnostic rather than instructional.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Chemistry under the 2023 guide is organised into two halves. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. Paper 1 is 36% of the grade, Paper 2 is 44%, and the Scientific Investigation is 20%.

Dubai's IB cohort is a minority inside a British-curriculum-dominated market, which means a Downtown family searching locally for a Chemistry HL specialist is searching a small pool spread across campuses from Al Barsha to Academic City. Online matching removes the distance constraint without changing the teaching.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is assessed against four criteria out of eight marks each: Knowing and understanding, Inquiring and designing, Processing and evaluating, and Reflecting on the impacts of science. A student who has designed a fair test with a justified variable range in MYP 5 meets that same demand in the DP Chemistry investigation, where Research design carries six of the 24 marks.

Several schools reachable from Downtown run MYP into DP on one campus, so the move looks administratively smooth. Academically it is not: MYP criteria reward documented process, while DP Chemistry Paper 2 rewards precise chemistry delivered in command-term form inside a tight word budget.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry to DP Chemistry

Most Downtown children sit Cambridge 0620 Chemistry or 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences, or the Pearson equivalents, before choosing a post-16 route. IGCSE chemistry is largely descriptive and calculation-light. DP Chemistry adds mechanism, thermodynamics and quantitative equilibrium. The bridging work is mole arithmetic done fluently, bonding explained rather than labelled, and organic structures read from a skeletal formula.

A Year 11 student in Dubai choosing between A Level Chemistry and IB Chemistry HL is choosing between depth in three subjects and breadth across six plus the Diploma core. Both routes are accepted by UAE universities, and medicine applicants in this market commonly present either.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Where a Dubai school offers the Career-related Programme with Chemistry as one of the DP courses taken, the chemistry syllabus and its assessment are unchanged. What differs is the surrounding structure: a career-related study, a reflective project and a different weekly load, which changes how much independent practice time a student has between sessions.

CP cohorts in Dubai are small, and that scarcity is precisely where a neighbourhood tutor search breaks down. A tutor who knows DP Chemistry assessment can teach a CP Chemistry student competently without having previously met the CP framework.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry rarely travels alone. The combinations that arrive most often from Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC are chemistry with biology for medicine applicants, and chemistry with physics and Maths AA for engineering. These are the subjects most frequently requested alongside it.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Six themes across Structure and Reactivity, two written papers with a data booklet, and one Scientific Investigation. Marks are lost on mechanism arrows, on entropy and spontaneity at HL, and on equilibrium calculations where the initial amounts are not set out clearly.

Biology

HL and SL

The standard partner for medicine applicants from this corridor. Biology marking rewards exact terminology and named examples, which a strong chemist often supplies in the wrong register, writing a mechanistically correct answer that the mark scheme does not reward.

Physics

HL and SL

Shares the Scientific Investigation structure and the four IA criteria with Chemistry, so a student taking both faces the same assessment twice in one year. Energy concepts overlap usefully between Reactivity 1 and the physics treatment of thermal energy.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Carries the algebra that Chemistry HL assumes: logarithms for pH and pKa, exponentials for rate equations, and rearrangement under exam pressure. AA HL Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, which exposes any shortcut habits quickly.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Common among chemistry students heading towards business or environmental science. AI permits a calculator throughout and leans on statistics, so an AI student taking Chemistry HL usually needs separate work on algebraic rearrangement.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Often taken alongside Chemistry by students in this corridor who want a second science without a third set of mechanisms. Assessment rewards systems thinking and evaluation of competing perspectives rather than calculation.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Chosen by chemistry students on a physiotherapy or sports-science track. The biochemistry overlap with Reactivity 1 is real, and students frequently find the chemistry sections of this course the easiest marks on the paper.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The subject most likely to limit a strong scientist's total points. Paper 1 guided analysis and the Individual Oral need a repeatable analytical method, which transfers well from the structured reasoning a chemistry student already uses.

Arabic B

HL and SL

Taken as a language acquisition subject by many non-Arab students in Dubai, and separately mandated in Dubai private schools whatever curriculum they run. The written and oral components reward drilled phrase construction more than vocabulary breadth.

Extended Essay

Core

A chemistry Extended Essay is a frequent choice from this corridor and a frequent source of trouble, because an experimental question that cannot be answered in a school lab produces 4,000 words of literature review. Scope coaching early is the whole of the fix.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all live online. Which one suits depends on whether your child's chemistry problem is conceptual, procedural or about the Internal Assessment, and those three need different amounts of time.

Weekly through-the-year support

A fixed hour or ninety minutes each week, aligned to the school's own order of teaching so the session consolidates rather than competes. Most Downtown families start this in DP1 autumn, when Structure 3 and Reactivity 3 arrive, and hold the same slot into the second year.

  • Same tutor and same hour weekly in Gulf Standard Time
  • Content follows the school's scheme of work, not a parallel syllabus
  • A short written note after each session naming what to practise
  • The slot can move permanently when the bus timetable changes

Mechanism and calculation clinics

Short blocks on one examined skill. The two most requested from this corridor are Reactivity 3 mechanisms drawn correctly under time pressure, and the quantitative work in Reactivity 2 where equilibrium and rate calculations are set out badly rather than understood badly. Four to six sessions usually moves the mark.

  • Built on past-paper questions and published mark-scheme wording
  • Arrow-pushing practised until the notation is automatic
  • Equilibrium tables laid out the way examiners expect
  • Data booklet use drilled so marks are not left on the table

Investigation and Extended Essay coaching

Process support against the published criteria. The tutor helps narrow a research question to something a school lab can measure, checks the uncertainty treatment before data collection begins, and gives feedback on draft work. Designing, measuring, analysing and writing stay entirely with the student.

  • Research question tested against the apparatus actually available
  • Feedback mapped to Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion, Evaluation
  • Extended Essay scope checked before 4,000 words are committed
  • No part of any report is written or redrafted by the tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Downtown Dubai

01

Where the Downtown week leaves room for chemistry

A chemistry session that happens at the wrong hour is a session that achieves nothing, and parents in Downtown discover this the expensive way. The pattern across the district is a long bus day with two co-curricular afternoons, homework for five other Diploma subjects, and a student who is genuinely tired by 7pm. Fitting chemistry into that is a scheduling decision first and a tutoring decision second.

Year group changes the picture more than most people expect. An MYP 4 or MYP 5 student has a shorter school day and more flexibility, so a 5pm start works and a sixty-minute session is plenty. A DP1 student is carrying six subjects and the first Internal Assessment deadlines, and ninety minutes once a week beats sixty minutes twice. A DP2 student in the spring is managing mocks, several IA submissions and Extended Essay drafting at once, and the only format that survives that is a fixed slot nobody negotiates.

The table below is the shape families in this district report rather than any school's published timetable. Your bus operator will give you exact figures, and Ramadan compresses the whole day. The useful column is the last one, which is the session length that actually holds a tired student's attention at that age.

Online delivery is what makes a narrow window workable. A tutor who does not have to drive from Mirdif to the Boulevard at 5.30pm can hold a 6.15pm slot reliably, and a session can shift from Tuesday to Thursday without anyone writing off a journey. That flexibility is worth more in DP2 than it sounds in DP1.

What the 2023 Chemistry guide actually asks for

The 2023 subject guide reorganised chemistry around two organising concepts rather than a numbered topic list, and parents working from an older syllabus find the vocabulary unfamiliar. Structure covers three themes: models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers three more: what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far, and the mechanisms of chemical change. HL and SL share the themes, with HL carrying additional depth inside each.

Assessment is two written papers and one investigation. Paper 1 is 36% of the grade and splits into Paper 1A, multiple choice, and Paper 1B, a data-based section. Paper 2 is 44% and runs from short structured questions into extended response. The Scientific Investigation is 20%. A data booklet is provided for both papers, which is a genuine opportunity and a genuine trap: students who have not practised with it spend exam minutes hunting for a constant they should be able to find in seconds.

The reorganisation matters for tuition because it changed where the difficulty sits. Under the current structure, the mechanism content in Reactivity 3 is no longer an option paper that some students avoid; proton transfer, electron transfer and electron sharing reactions are core for everyone. That is the single biggest reason chemistry requests from Dubai spike in DP1 autumn rather than DP2 spring.

The table maps the six themes to what each one costs students in marks. Use it to work out which theme the next block of sessions should target, rather than starting at the beginning and running out of time.

03

The mechanism problem, and how it is actually fixed

  • Reading a mechanism builds recognition, not production
  • Draw from blank, be interrupted at the wrong arrow, repeat
  • Separate skill: identifying which mechanism the stem is asking for
  • Explanations must name the chemistry, not narrate the event

Mechanism questions are the clearest example of a topic where effort and marks come apart. A student revises by reading a mechanism and following it, which feels like understanding and is not. The exam asks them to produce one, and production requires knowing where the electrons start, which bond breaks, what the intermediate looks like and why the arrow goes that way rather than the other. Reading never builds that. Drawing does.

The fix is mechanical and it works. The student draws the same small set of mechanisms repeatedly from a blank page, with the tutor watching the arrows as they are drawn rather than marking the finished product. Every wrong arrow is interrupted at the moment it is drawn and the student explains where the electron density was. Four sessions of that is usually enough for nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic addition to stop being guesswork. The remaining work is recognition: identifying from a question stem which mechanism is being asked for before drawing anything.

The second half of the problem is written explanation. Chemistry mark schemes reward specific chemical reasons, not narrative. A student writes "the bromine attacks the double bond" when the mark scheme wanted the pi electrons named as the nucleophile and the polarisation of the halogen explained. Both sentences are true. Only one scores. Command-term discipline is the same skill a physics student needs for explain questions, applied to different content, and it is coachable in the same way.

This is also where online delivery is genuinely better than a visit, not merely cheaper. A shared digital whiteboard keeps every attempt, so a student can see their own six attempts at the same mechanism in sequence and watch the arrows settle. A paper exercise book from an in-home session is in a bedroom by the following week.

04

Practical and data skills when the lessons are online

Parents reasonably ask how a science subject can be tutored remotely when chemistry is a laboratory discipline. The honest answer is to separate the two things that word covers. Hands-on technique — titrating without overshooting, using a balance properly, making up a standard solution — is learned in your child's school laboratory and cannot be learned anywhere else. Nothing on this page pretends otherwise.

The examined skills are different. Paper 1B is a data-based section marked at a desk. The Scientific Investigation is graded on Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation, three of which happen entirely away from the bench. Processing raw data, propagating uncertainty, choosing a graph that reveals the relationship, comparing a result against published values and writing a specific evaluation are desk skills, and they are where most of the available marks actually sit.

What online tuition does well, then, is the part that carries the marks. A tutor can work through your child's own raw data on a shared screen, show why a particular plot linearises the relationship, and point out before the write-up starts that an uncertainty has been ignored that will swallow the effect being measured. That intervention has to happen before data collection finishes, which is why the timing of investigation support matters more than its format.

The table below separates the two categories explicitly so you can see which part of chemistry a tutor is buying your child and which part the school provides.

Ramadan, the Dubai calendar and when revision actually happens

  • School hours are reduced across Dubai during Ramadan
  • Post-Iftar sessions work well but there are fewer usable hours
  • The spring break is usually the last uninterrupted revision block
  • Confirm every IB date with your school's IB coordinator, not a tutoring page

Any plan for an exam-year chemistry student in Dubai that ignores the academic calendar will fail in a specific and predictable way. The school year here runs roughly from late August or early September to the start of July, with a winter break around the turn of the year and a spring break. Ramadan moves earlier by about eleven days each year, and during it school hours are reduced across the emirate. For a DP2 student, that compression lands in the middle of the most important revision period of the two-year course.

The practical consequence is that the weeks before Ramadan are worth more than the weeks during it. A chemistry plan built backwards from the May session should assume that Ramadan weeks deliver fewer productive study hours per day, not the same hours shifted. Families who schedule post-Iftar sessions find them genuinely effective, because the student is rested and the house is awake, but there are fewer of them and they start late. Planning for two sessions a week during Ramadan and getting one is a worse outcome than planning for one and keeping it.

The other calendar feature worth planning around is the spring break landing shortly before the exam window. For most DP2 students that break is the last block of uninterrupted time they will get. Using it for full timed papers rather than note-making is the single highest-return decision in the final term, and it needs the tutor booked in advance because every family in Dubai wants those same days.

We do not publish IB session or results dates here. The reason is that ibo.org blocks automated verification, so any IB date we printed would be second-hand, and a date a family plans around has to come from the school's IB coordinator. For Cambridge and Pearson qualifications the position is different: both publish timetables openly, and UAE candidates sit the June and November series.

06

What chemistry tuition costs across a term, cheapest option first

Pricing conversations in Dubai usually start at the premium end, which makes every other option look like a compromise. Start at the other end instead. The cheapest published rates in this market are EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. Across a ten-week term at one hour a week, that is roughly AED 330 to AED 650 in total. For MYP homework supervision or a Year 9 student who needs company while working, that is a sensible purchase and nobody should be embarrassed by it.

The next step up is a qualified subject tutor working online, which Unitors publishes at IGCSE from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. A ten-week term at one weekly hour costs AED 1,500 to AED 2,000, and that is the band where a DP1 chemistry student who needs Reactivity 3 explained properly belongs. Above it sit the specialist rates: TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's specialist band at AED 200 to AED 450 or more, which is where a Chemistry HL candidate in DP2 with an investigation due realistically lands. Bestimate's monthly estimates run AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. At the very top, BartyED publishes AED 650 an hour for named or examiner-linked tutors.

In-home tuition sits across those bands with travel loaded in: Bestimate records AED 180 to AED 350 an hour, and independent home tutors AED 200 to AED 500. Advertised monthly packages in this market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, which is close to double per contact hour. Every figure in this section belongs to the provider named beside it; none is an IB Gram price. We quote after the free trial lesson, once level and frequency are known.

One piece of context parents find useful: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package. School fees are flat this year; tuition is the discretionary line that is not, which is a reason to buy fewer, better hours rather than more cheap ones.

Academic honesty on a chemistry investigation and Extended Essay

  • A tutor narrows the question, teaches the method and gives feedback
  • A tutor never writes, redrafts to completion or supplies data
  • Authorship is the dividing line and the student carries the consequence
  • Official syllabus and past-paper material is linked, never reproduced

This is the line that separates a tutor from a problem, and it is worth being explicit because the Dubai search results for chemistry help include businesses that sell completed coursework. One competitor in this market advertises finished Internal Assessments at a fixed price. Buying one is an academic honesty breach that puts the student's diploma at risk, and the consequence falls on the student, not the seller.

What a chemistry tutor may legitimately do is substantial, and worth listing because vagueness here helps nobody. They may discuss candidate research questions and say which ones a school lab can actually answer. They may point out that the planned concentration range will not produce a measurable rate difference. They may teach uncertainty propagation, explain why a particular plot linearises a relationship, and read a completed draft and say which of the four criteria it is currently failing and why. They may coach the structure of an Extended Essay argument and check that the scope is achievable in 4,000 words.

What a tutor may never do is write, redraft to completion, produce the analysis, generate the data, or supply text that appears in the submission. The distinction is authorship. Feedback on the student's own work is teaching; producing work the student submits as their own is malpractice. IB Gram tutors are briefed on that boundary before they take an investigation request, and we would rather say no to a request than take the booking.

There is also a copyright line. We do not supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade boundary tables as downloads. Those are published by the organisations that own them and we link to the official sources rather than reproducing them.

08

MoE equivalency: what a Dubai chemistry student needs to show later

Chemistry is a gateway subject for medicine, pharmacy and engineering, and families in this corridor often start thinking about UAE university entry long before they think about equivalency. The two are connected. The Ministry of Education runs an equivalency process for secondary certificates, and the requirements differ by curriculum track in ways that surprise parents late in Year 13.

For the British track the published requirements are specific. A student must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, and must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five required subjects. One competitor page in this market states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the sourced figure is five.

For the American track, English proficiency is demonstrated by a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. For the IB there is no points threshold we are willing to publish, because we have not read one on an official Ministry page and an unsourced number here is worse than no number. Ask the Ministry or the emirate attestation authority directly, or ask your school's university counsellor who processes this annually.

Nothing about tutoring is required for equivalency, and no tutoring provider performs or guarantees it. The process belongs to the Ministry and the attestation authority. What a tutor can do is make sure the grades your child presents are the ones they are capable of, which is a different and more modest claim.

Nearby areas we cover around Downtown Dubai

Downtown sits at the head of the central corridor, and the districts around it share schools, roads and the same evening constraints. If you live in any of these, the timing logic on this page applies with the drive times adjusted.

Downtown Dubai

Boulevard towers and the Old Town, with Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall on the Red Line. No school inside the district, so the day begins with a bus and ends with one.

Business Bay

South across the Dubai Canal and served by its own metro station. Pickups here run a little later than Downtown for the same campuses, which pushes the evening slot back by half an hour.

DIFC

A financial free zone with a separate common-law court system, but its schools fall under KHDA like the rest of Dubai. Parents working in the towers often need a slot after 7pm.

Sobha Hartland

A school destination rather than a commuter origin, holding both British and IB campuses. A large share of Downtown's southbound buses end up here each morning.

Al Jaddaf

Across the creek extension, with an IB school and a bilingual school within ten minutes. Families who wanted a shorter morning run often chose here.

Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villa districts with established schools and a slow 3.30pm return along Al Khail Road. Students on this route are home closest to 5pm.

Al Quoz

Mixed industrial and residential, holding several long-standing Indian-curriculum and British schools. The afternoon leg back towards Downtown is the day's worst traffic.

Culture Village and Jaddaf Waterfront

Low-rise waterfront communities feeding the same creek-side schools. Quieter evenings than the Boulevard, and a 5.30pm lesson start is usually workable.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Downtown Dubai

Creek-side and Hartland campuses

The schools Downtown chemistry enquiries most often name, clustered along the creek extension and in the Hartland and Meydan developments. Several run the IB Diploma; others run IGCSE into A Level, which changes what a DP chemistry request even means.

  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Hartland International School
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Clarion School
  • Kent College Dubai
  • Ambassador School Dubai
  • GEMS Modern Academy

Oud Metha and Al Garhoud

The older school belt east of the creek, roughly twenty minutes from the Boulevard outside peak hours. A high proportion of Downtown's Indian-curriculum families bus here, and two of these campuses offer the IB Diploma alongside other tracks.

  • Deira International School
  • The Indian High School Dubai
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • Universal American School
  • GEMS Winchester School Dubai

Al Safa and Jumeirah

The northbound destination and the shortest run of the three. Buses on this corridor return earliest, which is why a 5.30pm chemistry session is realistic for families whose children attend here rather than south of Al Khail Road.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the theme, not just the subject

A request that says Chemistry HL tells us very little. A request that says Reactivity 3 mechanisms, or entropy and Gibbs energy, or equilibrium calculations, lets us match a tutor who is strong in exactly that. If you do not know which theme, send the last marked paper and we will work it out.

  2. 02

Tell us when your child is actually home

The school, the year group and the realistic arrival time decide which tutors are available to you. A Downtown family on the Nad Al Sheba bus corridor gets a different shortlist from one whose children attend in Al Safa, because the workable start times are forty-five minutes apart.

  3. 03

    Take the free first lesson

The trial is a real chemistry lesson, not a consultation. The tutor works a past-paper question with your child and you hear how a mechanism gets explained. If the explaining does not land, tell us and we match again rather than asking you to give it a few weeks.

  4. 04

    Lock the weekly hour

Once the match works the slot is fixed at the same hour each week in Gulf Standard Time, with Ramadan timings adjusted in advance rather than improvised. A fixed hour is what survives a DP2 term in which everything else moves.

  5. 05

    Measure against marked work

Progress is read from examined output: Paper 1B scores, mechanism questions marked to published criteria, investigation drafts against the four criteria. If the numbers have not moved in six weeks, the approach changes or the tutor does.

  6. 06

    Plan the holidays deliberately

Winter and spring breaks are the only uninterrupted blocks in a DP2 year, and in Dubai every family wants the same days. Book intensive work in those windows early, and use them for full timed papers rather than for making more notes.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on the theme that is failing

Your child works with someone strong in the specific part of chemistry that is going wrong, rather than with a general science tutor who lives nearby. For Reactivity 3 and HL energetics that distinction decides whether the term is useful, and online delivery is what makes the choice available from a Downtown apartment.

Built around the Dubai calendar

Sessions are planned with Ramadan compression, the spring break and the school's own internal deadlines in view. A plan that assumes a uniform year fails in March, and most tutoring arrangements in this market are built on exactly that assumption.

The coursework boundary stated up front

Tutors narrow research questions, teach uncertainty and give feedback on drafts. They do not write, redraft to completion or supply data. We publish that line rather than leaving it implicit, because the Dubai search results for chemistry help contain businesses that do sell completed work.

Prices attributed to whoever published them

Every AED figure here names the provider or source it came from and the tier it belongs to. We quote our own fee after the trial lesson, when level and frequency are known, instead of advertising a rate that does not survive a Chemistry HL request in February.

Lab work left where it belongs

We say plainly that hands-on technique is learned in your child's school laboratory and that online tuition covers the desk skills, which is where most of the investigation marks sit. Overclaiming on this is common and it misleads parents about what they are buying.

No UAE premises and no home visits

IB Gram operates no office, centre or branch in the UAE and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the country. Home visits are a service we run only in India. Everything for a Downtown family happens live online, and you know that before enquiring.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Downtown Dubai: your questions answered

Why does my child suddenly struggle with IB Chemistry in the first term of DP1?+

Because the subject changes what it rewards. The opening weeks reward IGCSE habits: learn the definition, apply the formula. Then Structure 3 brings organic functional groups and Reactivity 3 brings proton, electron transfer and electron sharing mechanisms, and the course starts asking why a reaction proceeds the way it does. Memorisation stops working and reasoning has to replace it. That transition lands in October and November for most Dubai schools, which is exactly when chemistry tuition enquiries from Downtown and Business Bay rise. It is a predictable shift, not a sign your child has stopped being able.

How is IB Chemistry assessed under the current subject guide?+

Two written papers and one Scientific Investigation. Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade and splits into Paper 1A, multiple choice, and Paper 1B, a data-based section. Paper 2 carries 44% and runs from short structured questions into extended response. The investigation carries the remaining 20% and is marked against four criteria worth six marks each. A data booklet is supplied for both papers. Content is organised into Structure 1 to 3 and Reactivity 1 to 3 rather than a numbered topic list, which is why older revision guides can feel mismatched to your child's class.

What is the fastest way to fix organic mechanism questions?+

Drawing them from a blank page while someone watches the arrows appear. Reading a mechanism builds recognition, which feels like understanding but does not survive an exam that asks for production. The method that works is repetition of a small set of mechanisms, with the tutor interrupting at the moment a wrong arrow is drawn and asking where the electron density was. Four focused sessions usually settles nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic addition. The remaining work is recognising from the question stem which mechanism is wanted before any arrows are drawn at all.

Can chemistry really be tutored online when it is a laboratory subject?+

The practical technique cannot and we do not claim otherwise; titrating accurately and making up a standard solution are learned in your child's school laboratory. The examined skills are mostly elsewhere. Paper 1B is data analysis at a desk, and three of the four investigation criteria — Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation — are desk work. Processing data, propagating uncertainty, choosing a plot that reveals the relationship and writing a specific evaluation are where most of the available marks sit, and all of them are taught well over a shared screen.

What does a Chemistry HL tutor cost per term in Dubai?+

Counted across a ten-week term at one hour a week: the published entry rates of Tutopiya at AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik at AED 45 to 65 come to roughly AED 330 to 650 in total, which suits homework supervision rather than HL chemistry. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 an hour, so about AED 2,000 a term. TutorChase publishes AED 270, around AED 2,700. Bestimate's specialist band runs AED 200 to AED 450 or more per hour. Those are the providers' own published figures, not IB Gram prices; we quote after the free trial.

How should a chemistry plan change during Ramadan in Dubai?+

Plan for fewer usable hours rather than the same hours moved later. School hours are reduced across the emirate during Ramadan, and for a DP2 student that compression lands squarely inside the revision period. Post-Iftar sessions work well — the student is rested and the household is awake — but they start late and there are fewer of them. The practical response is to front-load the weeks before Ramadan, hold one reliable session a week during it rather than attempting two, and treat the following weeks as recovery rather than acceleration.

Which chemistry topics do Dubai students most often need help with in DP2?+

Three recur. Entropy and spontaneity in Reactivity 1, where signs and units go missing in otherwise correct arithmetic. Equilibrium and rate work in Reactivity 2, where the chemistry is understood but the calculation is laid out so badly that method marks are lost. And the mechanistic detail HL adds in Reactivity 3, which students meet last and practise least. None of the three needs a full re-teach; each responds to a short block of targeted past-paper work with the layout and notation drilled explicitly.

Can a tutor help with a chemistry Extended Essay without crossing the IB rules?+

Yes, with the boundary held firmly. A tutor can discuss candidate research questions, say which ones a school laboratory can realistically answer, check that the scope fits 4,000 words, coach the structure of the argument and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor cannot write any section, redraft to completion, produce the analysis or supply data. The dividing line is authorship. A chemistry Extended Essay that fails usually fails because the question was unanswerable in a school lab, and that is a conversation worth having in the first month.

Is Chemistry HL noticeably harder than Chemistry SL?+

They share the same six themes, so the difference is depth rather than breadth, and the depth concentrates in predictable places. HL adds full Gibbs energy calculations in Reactivity 1, quantitative rate equations and equilibrium constants in Reactivity 2, and more mechanistic and electrochemical detail in Reactivity 3. The papers are longer. In practice the HL student who struggles is usually struggling with the algebra underneath the chemistry rather than with the chemistry, which is why a student on Maths AI SL taking Chemistry HL often needs separate rearrangement work.

My child takes both Chemistry and Physics HL. Is that two investigations in one year?+

Yes, and the scheduling of it is the risk rather than the work itself. Both subjects use the same four criteria — Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation — each worth six marks, so the skills transfer cleanly. What does not transfer is time. Two investigations with internal deadlines set independently by two departments can land within a fortnight of each other, and a student who starts both late has no capacity to repeat a measurement in either. Ask both subject teachers for their submission dates in the first term of DP1 and plan backwards from the earlier one.

Do I need to send my child's school data to book a chemistry tutor?+

We ask for the school name, the year group, the subject and level, and the realistic time your child is home, because those four facts determine which tutors can actually take the slot. We do not need grades, reports or photographs to make a match, and we do not ask for them. If you choose to send a marked paper, it helps the tutor diagnose faster and we use it for that purpose only. Lead data about a minor is held for matching and you can ask for it to be deleted at any point.

Which Dubai schools near Downtown offer IB Diploma Chemistry?+

The campuses Downtown families most often name sit in the creek-side and Hartland clusters and in the older Oud Metha and Al Garhoud belt: Swiss International Scientific School Dubai, North London Collegiate School Dubai, GEMS Modern Academy, Deira International School and Jumeirah Baccalaureate School appear repeatedly in enquiries, alongside British-curriculum schools that run IGCSE into A Level rather than the Diploma. Check the current programme list on the school's own site, because offerings change between academic years. These names are local context only and imply no relationship with IB Gram.

Is private tutoring in Dubai legal, and what should I ask a tutor?+

It is legal and it is permitted rather than unregulated. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers school-registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day turnaround. Individuals tutoring without a permit face fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published schedule. Ask any tutor whether they hold the permit, and treat a claim of regulatory endorsement as a prompt for one more question.

On the British track, how many IGCSEs does UAE equivalency actually count?+

The published requirement is one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, plus five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among those five. One ranking competitor in this market states six subjects are needed; the sourced figure is five. For the IB there is no points threshold we will publish, because we have not read one on an official Ministry page. Verify on moe.gov.ae.

How quickly can a chemistry session start, and what if the hour we want is full?+

Matching usually takes a few days, and the limiting factor is the hour rather than the subject. Demand across Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC concentrates on roughly 6pm to 7.30pm on weekdays, because every family is working around the same bus returns. When that window is full we say so and offer a different hour, a different day, or a named wait, rather than substituting a general science tutor for a Chemistry HL request. Some of our chemistry tutors are UAE residents and others teach from India over video in Gulf Standard Time.

Start with a free chemistry lesson at an hour that suits the Downtown day

Send the school, the year group, the level and the theme that is going wrong, with a marked paper if you have one. We will match a Chemistry specialist free in your evening window and run the first lesson at no charge, live online in Gulf Standard Time. One hour is enough to tell whether this person can get a mechanism to make sense to your child. If not, we match again. IB Gram runs no centre in the UAE and does not send tutors to homes here, so nothing needs arranging beyond a quiet room and a laptop.
