IB Physics Tutor in Downtown Dubai

An IB Physics tutor in Downtown Dubai has to fit a 7am bus, a 3.15pm pickup and a 45-minute crawl up Al Khail Road before anyone opens a textbook. IB Gram matches your child to a Physics HL or SL specialist and runs the lesson live online, in Gulf Standard Time, from the apartment they already came home to. No drive, no parking in a tower basement, no waiting for a tutor stuck on Sheikh Zayed Road. The first lesson is free and you keep the tutor only if the fit is right.

  • Lessons run live over video, one student and one Physics specialist
  • Sessions are booked in Gulf Standard Time around Downtown school-bus timings
  • Tutors teach the 2023 IB Physics guide, Themes A to E, at HL and SL
  • IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE

IB & IGCSE in Downtown Dubai

Why a Downtown Dubai physics problem is usually a timetable problem

Downtown Dubai has the Burj Khalifa, the Opera District and the Boulevard. What it does not have is a private school inside its own boundary. Every child who lives in a tower on Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard or in the Old Town low-rises is bussed out of the district each morning: north to Al Satwa and Al Safa, east to Oud Metha and Al Jaddaf, south to Sobha Hartland, Nad Al Sheba and Meydan. That single fact shapes everything about physics tuition here, and almost no tutoring page mentions it.

The practical effect is a long day. A Year 12 student at a school in Nad Al Sheba or Sobha Hartland leaves a Downtown lobby somewhere between 6.40am and 7.10am, finishes lessons at about 3.15pm, and reaches home between 4.15pm and 5.00pm depending on whether the bus takes Al Khail Road or Financial Centre Road. Add a co-curricular commitment on two afternoons and the realistic window for a focused physics lesson is 5.30pm to 8.30pm on weekdays, plus Saturday mornings. A tutor who needs 40 minutes to drive in and 40 minutes to drive out has already eaten a third of that window.

Physics is also the subject where lost time shows up fastest. The 2023 IB Physics guide puts 36% of the final grade on Paper 1, 44% on Paper 2 and 20% on a single Scientific Investigation. Paper 1 splits into 1A, a multiple-choice section, and 1B, a data-analysis section that students meet properly for the first time in the exam hall if nobody has drilled it. A student can understand Newton's laws perfectly and still lose eight marks on a gradient, an uncertainty and a log plot. Those are teachable in two sessions. They are not teachable in a car.

Online delivery solves the geometry rather than compromising on it. Your child opens a laptop at 5.45pm in a Downtown apartment and works with a tutor who teaches Physics HL for a living, shares a whiteboard, annotates a past-paper scan live, and can pull up the exact mark scheme wording for a six-mark explain question. The pool is no longer whoever happens to live within a 20-minute drive of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard; it is whoever is genuinely good at Fields and Nuclear and quantum physics. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE, and we say so plainly rather than letting a parent find out at booking.

This page is written around the school run because that is the question Downtown parents actually ask first. Below you will find which schools this district feeds, what time each day ends, when a session realistically fits, how IB Physics is examined now, where Downtown students lose marks, what the Dubai market charges per hour, and what a tutor may and may not touch on an Internal Assessment. Read the tables; they carry more than the prose.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Downtown families arrive at IB Physics by three different routes: straight up through an IB continuum school, across from a British Year 11 after IGCSE Physics or Co-ordinated Sciences, or in from abroad mid-course. The gap to close is different in each case, and the first session is spent working out which one you are in.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Physics in the DP is a two-year course assessed by two written papers and one Scientific Investigation. The 2023 guide organises content into five themes: Space, time and motion; The particulate nature of matter; Wave behaviour; Fields; and Nuclear and quantum physics. HL students take the same themes to greater depth and sit longer papers. Paper 1 is 36% of the grade, Paper 2 is 44%, and the investigation is 20%.

In Dubai, the DP cohort is small relative to the British-curriculum majority, which is why a Downtown student who needs Physics HL help often finds the nearest specialist is attached to a school on the other side of the city. KHDA inspects every one of these schools annually, but inspection reports say nothing about whether a private tutor understands Theme D.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is graded against four criteria rather than a percentage: Knowing and understanding, Inquiring and designing, Processing and evaluating, and Reflecting on the impacts of science. Each is marked out of 8. A student who has never written a hypothesis with a justified independent variable will meet that demand again in DP Physics, where Research design is one of the four IA criteria worth six marks.

Several Dubai schools within reach of Downtown run the full IB continuum, so a child can move from MYP Sciences into DP Physics without changing campus. The transition still bites: MYP marking rewards process and reflection, while DP Paper 2 rewards precise physics in command-term form.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE to DP Physics bridge

Most Downtown children attend British-curriculum schools and sit Cambridge 0625 Physics or 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences before choosing a post-16 route. IGCSE Physics is strong on recall and structured calculation. DP Physics asks for proportional reasoning, graphical analysis and extended explanation. The bridge work is uncertainty arithmetic, vectors handled properly, and writing four lines of physics instead of one.

A Downtown student deciding between A Level Physics and IB Physics HL in Year 11 is usually deciding between a single-subject deep dive and a six-subject diploma with an Extended Essay. Both are accepted by UAE universities; the honest answer depends on how many subjects your child wants to carry, not on which is harder.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A handful of Dubai schools offer the IB Career-related Programme, in which students take two or more DP courses alongside a career-related study. Where Physics is one of those DP courses, the subject content and assessment are identical to the full Diploma, so the tutoring is the same. What changes is the surrounding workload and the reflective project timeline.

CP students in Dubai are far rarer than DP students, and that scarcity is exactly where a local tutor search fails. An online match ignores the problem: a tutor who knows DP Physics assessment can teach a CP Physics student without ever having met the CP framework before.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics is the headline here, but Downtown students rarely need one subject in isolation. A student struggling with Fields is often struggling with the maths underneath it, and a Physics HL candidate carrying Chemistry HL has two Internal Assessments due in the same term. These are the subjects most requested alongside Physics by families in the central corridor.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes, two papers and one investigation. Marks are lost on Paper 1B data analysis, on vector resolution in Theme A, and on the difference between an explain and a describe command term in Theme D field questions.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The default partner to Physics HL. Calculus and trigonometric identities carry straight into kinematics and wave behaviour. AA HL Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, which exposes any weakness in algebraic manipulation very quickly.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Chosen by students heading for business, economics or design. AI is calculator-permitted throughout and leans on statistics and modelling. A Physics student on AI SL needs extra support with algebraic rearrangement that AA students get for free.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Shares the Scientific Investigation structure with Physics, so a student doing both faces the same four IA criteria twice. Energetics and the Reactivity themes are where Downtown students most often ask for help in the second year.

Biology

HL and SL

Chosen alongside Physics by students targeting medicine or biomedical engineering. The marking rewards precise terminology in a way Physics does not, and a strong physicist often writes biology answers that are correct but unrewarded.

Computer Science

HL and SL

A common third science for Physics students in the central corridor. The HL course adds abstract data structures and resource management. The solution to the internal assessment is a developed product, which demands project discipline across a full year.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Overlaps with Physics on materials, forces and energy. The design cycle and the HL major project reward documented iteration, which is a different skill from the structured problem solving Paper 2 wants.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The subject most likely to drag a strong science student's point total down. The Individual Oral and Paper 1 guided analysis need a repeatable method, not more reading, and that method transfers well from a physics student's structured thinking.

Economics

HL and SL

Frequently paired with Physics by Downtown and DIFC families. Diagram accuracy and the three internal assessment commentaries carry most of the risk, and HL adds quantitative questions that a physicist usually finds straightforward.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The TOK exhibition and essay sit outside subject teaching but consume exam-year time. A tutor can coach the argument structure and the choice of real-life situations; the writing and the objects chosen must be the student's own work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Downtown families use physics tuition, all delivered live online. The right one depends on how far through the two-year course your child is and whether the problem is content, technique or the Internal Assessment.

Weekly one-to-one through the year

A fixed 60 or 90-minute slot each week, placed in the evening window your child's bus actually permits. The tutor tracks the school's scheme of work so the session reinforces what was taught that week rather than running a parallel course. Most Downtown families start here in DP1 and keep the same slot into DP2.

  • Same tutor, same time each week, in Gulf Standard Time
  • Session content follows the school's own topic order
  • Written note after each lesson naming what to practise
  • Slot can move permanently if the bus timetable changes

Paper technique intensives

Short blocks aimed at one examined skill rather than one topic. The commonest requests from Downtown students are Paper 1B data analysis, uncertainty and error propagation, and writing six-mark explanations that earn all six marks. Four to six sessions is usually enough to move a predictable loss into a predictable gain.

  • Built on past-paper questions and published mark-scheme wording
  • Covers gradients, intercepts, log plots and uncertainty arithmetic
  • Command terms drilled until the response shape is automatic
  • Runs well in the holidays when the evening window opens up

Investigation supervision support

Process coaching on the Scientific Investigation against the four published criteria. The tutor helps the student narrow a research question, checks that the method can actually produce analysable data, and gives feedback on draft work. The student designs, collects, analyses and writes; the tutor never produces any part of the report.

  • Research question narrowed until it is measurable in a school lab
  • Feedback mapped to Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion, Evaluation
  • Uncertainty treatment reviewed before the write-up starts
  • All drafting and data collection remain the student's own work

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Downtown Dubai

01

What a Downtown Dubai parent is actually asking

  • Proximity filters out good physics tutors without improving the lesson
  • The IB is 7% of Dubai private-school enrolment and spread across the city
  • The binding constraint in Downtown is the evening window, not the drive
  • All IB Gram lessons for UAE families run live online, one-to-one

The search phrase is "IB physics tutor in Downtown Dubai", but the question underneath it is narrower: can someone who genuinely understands Physics HL teach my child between the time the bus drops them off and the time they need to sleep. That is a scheduling question wearing a subject-expertise costume, and the two parts pull against each other. Physics specialists are scarce in any city. Physics specialists who happen to live a short drive from the Boulevard and have a free 6pm slot are scarcer still.

Dubai's private-school market is large — 227 private schools serving 387,441 students across 17 curricula in 2024-25, with the IB accounting for 7% of enrolment, according to Dubai Media Office figures published in January 2025. A 7% share across a city that size is a real cohort, but it is spread thinly across campuses from Al Barsha to Academic City. The practical consequence for a Downtown family is that the nearest IB Physics HL teacher is statistically unlikely to be in the next tower.

So the honest answer to the search is that proximity is the wrong filter. The right filter is whether the tutor can read a Theme D field question and tell your child, inside thirty seconds, which of the three standard traps they just fell into. IB Gram matches on that, delivers the lesson over live video, and sets the time by your child's bus rather than by a tutor's commute. Home visits are an India-only service and are not available anywhere in the UAE.

Everything that follows is built to answer the practical version of your question. The next section maps the school run properly, with a table you can check against your own child's timetable.

02

The Downtown school run, hour by hour, and where a physics lesson fits

Three bus corridors leave Downtown each morning. The northern run to Al Safa, Al Satwa and Jumeirah is the shortest and returns first. The eastern run to Oud Metha and Al Garhoud crosses the creek and sits in Financial Centre Road traffic both ways. The southern run to Sobha Hartland, Meydan, Nad Al Sheba and Al Quoz uses Al Khail Road, which is fast in the morning and slow at 3.30pm. Which corridor your child is on decides, almost entirely, whether a 5.30pm lesson is realistic or whether 6.30pm is the earliest sensible start.

The table below sets out the pattern families report. Treat the times as the shape of the day rather than a published timetable — your school's bus operator will give you exact figures, and Ramadan timings shift the whole day earlier. The column that matters is the last one: the earliest hour at which a child can sit down and think about physics rather than recover from a bus.

Two further constraints are worth naming. Co-curricular activities at most Dubai schools run immediately after lessons, which means two afternoons a week commonly return home an hour later than the table shows. And DP2 students in the second half of the year are often carrying mock results, Internal Assessment deadlines in two or three subjects, and Extended Essay drafting at the same time. A fixed weekly slot survives that; an ad-hoc arrangement does not.

Online delivery is what makes the narrow window usable. A lesson that starts at 6.15pm and ends at 7.45pm does not need a tutor to have left their own home at 5.30pm, and it does not collapse because Sheikh Zayed Road closed a lane. If your child is unusually tired on a Tuesday, the slot can move to Thursday without anyone writing off a journey.

How IB Physics is examined under the 2023 guide

The structure changed with the 2023 subject guide and a surprising number of parents are still working from the old one. Physics is now assessed by two written papers and one Scientific Investigation, with no separate options paper. Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade and is split into Paper 1A, multiple choice, and Paper 1B, a data-analysis section built on a short experimental context. Paper 2 carries 44% and runs from short structured questions into extended response. The Scientific Investigation carries the remaining 20%.

Content is organised into five themes rather than a topic list: Space, time and motion; The particulate nature of matter; Wave behaviour; Fields; and Nuclear and quantum physics. HL and SL share the themes. HL goes deeper inside each and sits longer papers, which in practice means more multi-step problems and more questions where the physics has to be selected before it can be applied.

The split matters for how you buy tuition. A student who is weak on content needs theme-by-theme teaching, which is slow and takes most of a year. A student who knows the physics but underperforms needs Paper 1B and command-term work, which is fast and takes a handful of sessions. Parents in Downtown frequently buy the first when they needed the second, and the diagnostic question is simple: compare your child's Paper 1 and Paper 2 percentages from the last mock. If Paper 1 is well below Paper 2, the problem is probably technique.

The table below sets out the components and what each actually tests. The durations differ between HL and SL, which is why both are shown.

Where Downtown physics students lose marks, specifically

  • Vector resolution under time pressure, especially on inclined planes
  • Gradient, intercept and uncertainty work in Paper 1B
  • Explain questions in Theme D answered as describe questions
  • An investigation research question too broad to produce a clean graph

The pattern is consistent enough to name. The first loss is vector resolution in Theme A. A student who can state that forces are vectors will still add two perpendicular forces arithmetically under time pressure, or resolve along the wrong axis on an inclined plane. It costs two or three marks per paper and it is fixable in one session followed by twenty minutes of practice a week for a month.

The second loss is graphical work in Paper 1B. The section gives a short experimental context and asks for a gradient, an intercept interpreted physically, an uncertainty, and sometimes a linearisation. Students who have only ever drawn graphs in a lab write-up, where neatness was the implicit criterion, do not realise the exam wants a value with a unit and a justification. The marks are mechanical once the method is drilled, which is why a technique intensive moves this number faster than any amount of extra content teaching.

The third loss is in Theme D. Field questions ask students to explain, and explain in IB command-term terms means giving reasons or causes, not restating the situation. A student writes "the field is stronger closer to the mass" and stops, when the mark scheme wanted the inverse-square relationship named and applied. The fix is a response template per command term, practised against real mark schemes until the shape is automatic.

The fourth, and the one that costs the most, is the Internal Assessment. Twenty per cent of the grade rides on a single investigation, and the commonest failure is a research question chosen because the apparatus was available rather than because the relationship is analysable. That is covered in its own section below, because the fix has to happen before data collection starts, not after.

05

The Scientific Investigation: four criteria, 24 marks, and what a tutor may touch

The Scientific Investigation is the single largest block of marks a Physics student controls directly. It is assessed against four criteria — Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation — each worth six marks, for a total of 24 scaled to 20% of the final grade. The report has a 3,000-word limit. Students who have read the criteria usually write better reports than students who have only read an exemplar, because the criteria tell you exactly what the examiner is looking for.

The most common structural mistake is treating the investigation as a school practical with a longer write-up. Research design rewards a clearly stated and focused research question with justified methodology, including a sensible range of values for the independent variable. If the independent variable only takes three values, Data analysis has nothing to work with and Conclusion has nothing to compare against theory. That single decision, made in week one, caps the mark before any data exists.

What a tutor may legitimately do is narrow and sharpen. They can ask whether the relationship your child is testing is one the data will actually reveal. They can point out that a measurement will be swamped by an uncertainty they have not thought about. They can read a draft and say which criterion it is currently failing. They can teach uncertainty propagation properly. What a tutor may never do is write, redraft to completion, produce the analysis, or supply the data. IB academic honesty rules make authorship the student's responsibility and a breach is a malpractice matter for the student, not an inconvenience for the tutor.

The table below maps each criterion to what earns marks and the failure we see most often in Dubai students' first drafts.

IB PHYSICS SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION CRITERIA
CriterionMarksWhat earns the marksMost common first-draft failure
Research design6Focused research question, justified method, sensible variable rangeQuestion too broad; only three data points planned
Data analysis6Correct processing, uncertainty treatment, appropriate graphRaw data tabulated but uncertainties never propagated
Conclusion6Conclusion justified by the data and compared to accepted theoryA restated trend with no reference to published physics
Evaluation6Specific strengths, weaknesses and realistic improvementsGeneric limitations such as human error and time

What physics tuition costs in the Dubai market, and what proximity adds to the bill

Start with the monthly figure rather than the hourly one, because that is the number that decides whether tuition continues past February. A single 60-minute session a week for a school month is four hours. At the qualified-subject-tutor rates published by Unitors — IGCSE from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200 an hour — that is roughly AED 600 to AED 800 a month. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts weekly one-hour tutoring at AED 240 to AED 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. A Physics HL candidate in DP2 sits in that top band, and a parent budgeting from an advertised hourly rate is usually surprised by the total.

The in-home premium is where the Downtown geography becomes a money question. Bestimate records in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 an hour and independent home tutors at AED 200 to AED 500, against online specialist rates that overlap at the bottom and stop lower at the top. Monthly packages advertised in this market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. The arithmetic is not subtle: the in-home package costs roughly twice as much per contact hour, and the difference is paying for a car on Al Khail Road, not for better physics.

At the cheaper end, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to AED 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. Those figures buy a university student or a generalist, which is a reasonable purchase for Year 9 homework support and a poor one for Theme D at Higher Level. At the premium end, TutorChase quotes AED 270 an hour and BartyED AED 650, the latter for named or examiner-linked tutors. These are the market's published numbers, each attributable to the provider that published it, and none of them is an IB Gram price. IB Gram quotes after the free trial lesson, once the subject, level and frequency are known.

What a parent can verify independently: ask any provider for the rate per 60 minutes rather than per session, ask whether travel is inside or outside that figure, and ask what happens to the fee if a session is cancelled by the tutor. The answers vary more than the headline rates do.

Online against in-home for a Downtown tower, compared honestly

There is a genuine case for in-home tuition and it is worth stating before the comparison. A tutor in the room can see a student's page, notice when they stop writing, and manage a younger child who will not stay seated. For a Year 4 pupil, that matters a great deal. For a 17-year-old working through Paper 2 past papers on a shared screen, it matters much less, and it costs considerably more.

The Downtown-specific arguments cut the other way. Tower access is slow: visitor parking in a Downtown basement is limited and often paid, security sign-in takes time, and a tutor arriving at 5.50pm for a 6pm start frequently arrives at 6.10pm. Over a 30-week year that is five hours of lesson time lost to a lift lobby. Traffic is the larger factor — a tutor coming from Al Barsha or Mirdif to Downtown at 5.30pm is budgeting 45 to 60 minutes, and that cost is inside their rate whether you see it itemised or not.

The pool argument is the decisive one. Filtering for physics specialists who also live within a 20-minute drive of the Boulevard removes almost everyone good. Filtering for physics specialists who can be online at 6.15pm Gulf Standard Time removes almost nobody. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all, so this is not a sales preference dressed as analysis; it is why the service is built the way it is. Home tutoring remains an India-only service for us.

The table sets the two formats side by side on the terms that actually differ in this district.

The exam calendar for a Downtown physics student, counted backwards

Dubai schools running the IB Diploma sit the May session, and the practical planning problem is that the deadlines a student controls fall long before the exams they worry about. The Internal Assessment is marked internally and moderated externally, so the school's own submission date is the one that binds — typically in the first half of DP2 and set by the IB coordinator, not by the IB itself. A student who starts the investigation in the term it is due has already lost the chance to repeat a measurement.

We do not publish IB session or results dates on this page. The reason is specific rather than coy: ibo.org blocks automated verification, so every IB date we could print would be second-hand, and a date a parent plans around has to be right. Ask your school's IB coordinator for the current session timetable and the internal deadlines for Physics, and plan from that. For Cambridge and Pearson qualifications the position is different, because both publish timetables openly, and UAE candidates sit the June and November series.

What can be planned confidently is the work, counted backwards from the exam window. Twelve months out, the investigation research question should be settled and the data collection method tested. Nine months out, data collected and the first analysis drafted. Six months out, the report submitted to the school and full past papers started under timed conditions. Three months out, Paper 1B drilled as a discrete skill and command-term templates automatic. Six weeks out, past papers by theme rather than by paper, so weak themes get the last of the time.

The table below turns that into a checklist you can hold against your own child's position today. If they are behind on a row, that is the row the next four tuition sessions should address.

KHDA, the permit question, and what a Downtown parent can check

  • KHDA regulates schools in Dubai; it does not approve individual private tutors
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • No fine schedule is published, so no amount can be quoted as fact
  • IB Gram runs no UAE office or centre and no in-home visits in the UAE

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which the UAE government describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects schools annually and publishes a rating on a six-band scale. Those reports tell you about your child's school. They tell you nothing about a private tutor, because KHDA does not inspect individual tutors, and any tutoring provider implying otherwise is describing something that does not exist.

Private tutoring itself is regulated, but through a different body. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page, "Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing", lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone.

A separate and much larger requirement applies to anyone running a tutoring centre with premises and staff in Dubai: a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal. IB Gram holds no such permit and operates no centre or office in the UAE, which is why you will not find an address on this page. Our tutors work online, and the ones based in the UAE are responsible for holding the MoHRE permit that applies to them.

The practical check for a parent is short. Ask whether the tutor holds a MoHRE private tuition work permit. Ask what their actual physics qualification is and which level they have taught to. Ask for the first lesson free so you can judge the teaching rather than the pitch. And treat any claim of regulatory approval as a reason to ask one more question.

What happens if no Physics HL specialist is free at your slot

  • Demand concentrates on the same 6pm to 7.30pm weekday window
  • A stated wait beats a silent substitution with a generalist
  • Some tutors are UAE-resident; others teach from India over video
  • The trial lesson is free and carries no obligation to continue

This is the question no competitor in the Dubai tutoring market answers, and it deserves a straight response. Physics HL is a narrow specialism. On any given week there are more requests for a 6.30pm Sunday-to-Thursday slot than there are Physics HL tutors with that hour free, because every Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC family is asking for the same window for the same reason. Sometimes the honest answer to a request is not yet.

When that happens, we say so rather than substituting a generalist and hoping. The options we offer are a different hour in the same week, a different day, a tutor who covers Physics SL confidently and the HL extension less so with that limitation stated openly, or a wait with a named date. A Physics HL student put with a maths graduate who last read Theme E at university loses a term before anyone notices, and that is a worse outcome than waiting nine days.

The second honesty point concerns where tutors are. Some of our physics specialists are UAE residents; others teach from India, where our in-home service operates, and work with UAE students over video in Gulf Standard Time. We do not hide non-UAE delivery behind a local number, and we do not claim a Dubai office. What we commit to is the subject match and the timezone, both of which are what actually affect the lesson.

The free trial exists to make this checkable rather than promised. One lesson, no fee, and you decide whether this person can teach your child physics. If they cannot, you have lost an hour of an evening, not a term.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Downtown Dubai

Downtown Dubai sits at the top of a corridor of high-density districts that share the same schools, the same roads and the same evening timetable. If you live in any of these, the school-run arithmetic on this page applies to you with only the drive times changed.

Downtown Dubai

Towers and the Old Town around the Boulevard, with Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro on the Red Line. No private school inside the district, so every child commutes out by bus or car.

Business Bay

Immediately south across the Dubai Canal, served by Business Bay metro. Buses here collect slightly later than Downtown for the same schools, which pushes a realistic lesson start to 6pm.

DIFC

A financial free zone with its own courts, but schools are regulated by KHDA like everywhere else in Dubai. Parents here often work in the towers above and ask for sessions after 7pm.

Sobha Hartland

Close enough to Downtown to be a school destination rather than a commute origin. Several British and IB schools sit here, which is why Downtown buses run south-east each morning.

Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villa communities with established schools that draw pupils from Downtown apartments. The return leg is the slow one, arriving home closer to 4.45pm than 4.15pm.

Al Jaddaf and Culture Village

Across the creek extension, with an IB school and a bilingual school within a short drive. A fair number of Downtown families chose a school here for the shorter morning run.

Al Quoz

Industrial and residential mixed, holding several long-established Indian-curriculum and British schools. Afternoon traffic on Al Khail Road from Al Quoz back to Downtown is the worst leg of the day.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City

New villa districts filling in between Meydan and Al Quoz. Families here report the same post-5pm lesson window as Downtown, with a slightly earlier bus return.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Downtown Dubai

Schools Downtown children commute to

These are the campuses Downtown and Old Town families most often name when they ask for a physics tutor. Each runs either the IB Diploma, the British curriculum through IGCSE, or both, and each one sets the time your child walks back into the apartment.

  • Hartland International School
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Clarion School
  • Kent College Dubai
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Safa British School
  • Horizon English School

Oud Metha and Al Garhoud

The older school belt east of the creek, reachable from Downtown in roughly 20 minutes outside peak. A high proportion of Downtown's Indian-curriculum and British-curriculum families bus their children here, and several of these campuses offer the IB Diploma alongside other tracks.

  • Deira International School
  • St Mary's Catholic High School
  • The Indian High School Dubai
  • GEMS Winchester School Dubai
  • Universal American School
  • Dubai Gem Private School

Al Safa, Al Satwa and Jumeirah

The northern destination from Downtown, and the shortest morning run of the three clusters. Buses on this route return earliest, which makes a 5.30pm lesson start realistic for families whose children attend here rather than south of Al Khail Road.

  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School
  • The English College Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington Primary School
  • Safa Community School
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School

Schools are named here as context for the Downtown school run and the local curriculum mix. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any school named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the bus, not just the subject

The booking form asks for the school, the year group and the time your child actually gets home. That is what determines which tutors are available to you, and it is the question most tutoring enquiries skip. A Downtown family on the Nad Al Sheba run gets a different shortlist from one on the Al Safa run.

  2. 02

    Send the last mock paper

A marked Paper 1 and Paper 2 from the most recent mock tells a physics tutor more in two minutes than a half-hour conversation. The gap between the two percentages shows whether the problem is content or technique, and that decides what the first four sessions do.

  3. 03

Meet the tutor at no charge

The first lesson is free. It is a real lesson, not a sales call: the tutor works a past-paper question with your child and you see how they explain. If the fit is wrong, say so and we match again rather than asking you to persist.

  4. 04

    Fix the weekly slot

Once the match works, the slot is booked at the same hour each week in Gulf Standard Time. Consistency is what makes a term's worth of physics stick, and a fixed hour survives a DP2 timetable that changes constantly. The slot can be permanently moved if the bus schedule changes.

  5. 05

Review against the mark scheme, not a feeling

Progress is checked against examined work: Paper 1B scores, command-term responses marked to published criteria, investigation drafts measured against the four criteria. If a number is not moving after six weeks, we change the approach or the tutor.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specialist match beats a short drive

Your child is matched to someone who teaches IB Physics at the level they are sitting, not to whoever covers science and lives nearby. For Theme D and Paper 1B that distinction is the whole of the value, and online delivery is what makes it possible from a Downtown apartment.

Timed to the Downtown evening

Sessions are set in Gulf Standard Time around the bus corridor your child is on. A 6.15pm start for a Nad Al Sheba commuter and a 5.30pm start for an Al Safa commuter are different services, and treating them the same is why generic scheduling fails here.

Honest about the Internal Assessment line

A tutor narrows the research question, teaches uncertainty properly and gives feedback on drafts. The student designs, measures, analyses and writes. We state that boundary on the page rather than leaving it vague, because a breach is the student's problem, not the tutor's.

Market rates attributed, not invented

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the provider or source that published it, with the tier it belongs to. We quote our own fee after the trial, when the level and frequency are known, rather than advertising a number that does not survive contact with a Physics HL request.

Availability stated, including when it is no

If no Physics HL tutor is free at your hour, you are told, with options and a date. The alternative is a quiet substitution that costs a term. That disclosure is uncomfortable to publish and it is the reason parents come back in DP2.

No UAE office, no home visits, said plainly

IB Gram has no centre, branch or address in the UAE and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the country. Home visits are a service we offer only in India. Everything for a Downtown family runs live online, and you know that before you enquire.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Downtown Dubai: your questions answered

Which schools do Downtown Dubai families send their children to for the IB Diploma?+

No private school sits inside Downtown Dubai itself, so every family commutes out. The IB Diploma campuses Downtown parents most often name are in Sobha Hartland, Meydan, Nad Al Sheba, Al Jaddaf, Al Safa and Al Garhoud, with Hartland International School, North London Collegiate School Dubai, Swiss International Scientific School Dubai, GEMS Modern Academy, Jumeirah Baccalaureate School and Deira International School recurring most. Which one your child attends matters for tuition because it sets the bus corridor and therefore the earliest hour a lesson can realistically start. Schools are named here as local context only; IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them.

What time can an IB Physics lesson realistically start if my child is bussed from Downtown?+

It depends on the corridor. Children bussed north to Al Safa, Al Satwa or Jumeirah are usually home between 3.45pm and 4.15pm, which makes a 5.30pm start workable. Those bussed south to Nad Al Sheba or Al Quoz often reach home closer to 5pm, so 6.15pm is more honest. Add an hour on co-curricular days. Because lessons run online, the slot does not need padding for a tutor's drive, which is what makes the narrow window usable at all. Pick a time your child can think at, not the earliest one that technically fits.

How much of the IB Physics grade comes from the Scientific Investigation?+

Twenty per cent, at both Higher and Standard Level under the 2023 subject guide. It is marked against four criteria — Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation — each worth six marks, giving 24 marks in total, and the report has a 3,000-word limit. The remaining 80% is split between Paper 1 at 36% and Paper 2 at 44%. That makes the investigation the largest single block of marks a student controls directly, and the reason the research question deserves more attention in week one than it usually gets.

Is Paper 1B really worth separate practice for my child?+

Yes, and it is the fastest available gain for most students. Paper 1B gives a short experimental context and asks for gradients, intercepts interpreted physically, uncertainties and sometimes a linearisation. Students who have only drawn graphs for lab write-ups treat it as a presentation exercise rather than a calculation, and lose marks that are mechanical once the method is drilled. Four to six focused sessions on past-paper 1B questions typically moves the score more than the same hours spent on new content. Compare your child's Paper 1 and Paper 2 percentages to see whether this applies.

Can a physics tutor help with my child's Internal Assessment without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may help narrow the research question until it is measurable, point out that an uncertainty will swamp the effect being measured, teach uncertainty propagation, suggest which graph the data needs, and read a draft and say which criterion it is currently failing. A tutor may not write any part of the report, redraft it to completion, produce the analysis or supply data. Under IB academic honesty rules the work must be the student's own, and a breach is a malpractice matter for the student. We state that limit before the first session rather than after.

What does an IB Physics tutor cost per month in Dubai rather than per hour?+

One 60-minute session a week is about four hours a month. Using the rates providers publish, Unitors lists IB tuition from AED 200 an hour, which puts a weekly session near AED 800 a month. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table estimates AED 240 to AED 600 monthly at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. A Physics HL candidate in the second year sits in that top band. These are market figures from the sources named, not IB Gram prices; we quote after the free trial.

Why is in-home physics tuition more expensive in Downtown Dubai?+

Because you are paying for the journey. Bestimate records in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 an hour and independent home tutors at AED 200 to AED 500, while monthly packages advertised locally run around AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. That is roughly double per contact hour. In Downtown there is a second cost: basement visitor parking is limited and tower security sign-in takes time, so a 6pm start often becomes 6.10pm. IB Gram does not provide home visits in the UAE in any case.

Does my child need a lab to do well in IB Physics if lessons are online?+

Your child's school provides the lab, and that is where the Scientific Investigation data must be collected. Online tuition does not replace practical work; it prepares your child to use the lab time well and to analyse what comes out of it. That means designing a method that will produce a usable graph, knowing which uncertainties matter before the first measurement, and handling the processing properly afterwards. The marks in Data analysis and Evaluation are won at a desk, not at a bench, which is why remote support fits this component better than parents expect.

My child understands physics but underperforms in exams. What actually fixes that?+

Usually command-term discipline and timed practice, not more content. IB mark schemes reward specific response shapes: an explain question wants reasons or causes, a describe question wants the observable account, and a student who answers the first as though it were the second loses marks while writing true physics. The fix is a template per command term, practised against published mark schemes until it is automatic, combined with full papers under exam timing. Six weeks of that moves a predictable loss into a predictable gain, and it is cheaper than a year of re-teaching.

Is IB Physics HL harder than A Level Physics for a Dubai student?+

They are hard in different directions and the honest comparison depends on your child. IB Physics HL carries five themes, a Scientific Investigation and the surrounding Diploma load of six subjects plus the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. A Level Physics goes deeper in a narrower space with fewer subjects alongside it. UAE universities accept both. The practical question is whether your child performs better carrying breadth or depth, and a Year 11 student who is already stretched by nine IGCSEs usually answers that question themselves.

Do private physics tutors in Dubai need a permit, and can I check?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published. Ask any tutor directly whether they hold the permit.

Does KHDA approve or inspect private physics tutors in Dubai?+

No. KHDA is described by the UAE government as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, and it inspects schools annually on a six-band scale. It does not inspect individual private tutors, so no tutor can hold a KHDA rating. A separate KHDA Educational Services Permit applies to training institutes with premises and staff in Dubai. Any tutoring provider suggesting regulatory endorsement of its individual tutors is describing something that does not exist, and that is worth one follow-up question before you book.

My child is in DP2 with mocks in a few weeks. Is it too late for physics tuition?+

No, but what the sessions should do changes. With a short runway there is no time to re-teach five themes, so the work becomes triage: identify the two weakest themes from the mock paper, drill Paper 1B as a discrete skill, and fix command-term responses so the physics your child already knows earns full marks. That sequence is deliberately narrow because narrow is what works in six weeks. Bring the marked mock to the free trial lesson and the tutor can tell you within the hour which two themes to spend the time on.

What happens if no Physics HL tutor is available at the time we need?+

You are told, with options and a date, rather than matched to a generalist. Demand in Dubai concentrates on the same weekday evening window because every family in Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC is working around the same bus timings. When the hour is full, the choices are a different hour, a different day, a Physics SL-confident tutor with the HL limitation stated openly, or a short wait. Some of our physics tutors are UAE residents and others teach from India over video in Gulf Standard Time; we do not conceal that behind a local number.

Should we use the same tutor for Physics HL and Maths AA, or two separate specialists?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking. The overlap is real: calculus and trigonometric identities in AA carry directly into kinematics and wave behaviour, so a tutor strong in both can use one subject to repair the other. The limit is Higher Level in both at once, where the depth required in each usually means two specialists serve the student better than one generalist. We will say which situation you are in rather than selling a convenient bundle, and the trial lesson is the cheapest way to test it.

Book a free physics lesson at an hour your child's bus allows

Tell us the school, the year group and the time your child walks back into the apartment, and send the last marked mock if you have it. We will match an IB Physics specialist who is free in that window and run the first lesson at no charge, live online in Gulf Standard Time. You will see within the hour whether this person can explain a Theme D field question in a way your child follows. If not, we match again. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, so there is nothing to arrange beyond a quiet room and a charged laptop.
