IB MYP Tutor in Downtown Dubai

Parents look for an IB MYP tutor in Downtown Dubai when a report arrives full of fours and fives and nobody can explain what that means or what to do. MYP marks criteria, not percentages, and the four letters tell you exactly which skill is missing. IB Gram matches your child to a tutor who can read that report and teaches live online, in Gulf Standard Time, in the hour the Downtown school bus leaves free. First lesson free.

  • Criterion-level diagnosis: which of A, B, C or D is costing the grade
  • Covers MYP 1 to 5 across sciences, maths, individuals and societies, language
  • Sessions placed around Downtown bus returns, in Gulf Standard Time
  • Home visits are an India-only service and are not offered in the UAE

IB & IGCSE in Downtown Dubai

A report card of fours and fives, and a school run that leaves no time to fix it

The Middle Years Programme reports differently from every other system a Downtown family is likely to have come from, and that difference causes most of the confusion. There are no percentages. Each subject is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D, each marked out of eight. Those four marks are added and converted through a published boundary table into a single grade from 1 to 7. A child can score 7 on criterion A and 3 on criterion B and come out with a 5 overall, and a parent reading that 5 has no idea that the problem is entirely in one skill.

This matters more in Dubai than it might elsewhere, because MYP students here are often the same students who will be choosing between the IB Diploma, A Levels and an IGCSE route within two or three years. The criteria are not arbitrary school policy; they are the skills the Diploma will assess under different names. Criterion B in MYP Sciences is inquiring and designing, and it becomes Research design in the DP Scientific Investigation. Criterion B in MYP Mathematics is investigating patterns, and it becomes most of the mathematical exploration. A child who is weak on one criterion at thirteen is weak on the same thing at seventeen, with more riding on it.

The Downtown constraint is time. No private school sits inside the district, so every child here is bussed out: north towards Al Safa and Al Satwa, east over the creek to Oud Metha and Al Garhoud, or south-east to Sobha Hartland, Meydan and Nad Al Sheba. The morning pickup is between about 6.40am and 7.15am. The return is between 3.45pm and 5.00pm depending on the corridor, and two afternoons a week usually carry a co-curricular commitment. An MYP 4 student has homework from eight subject groups and a long day behind them.

That combination is why MYP tuition in this district fails when it is unfocused and works when it is narrow. Teaching an MYP student more content is rarely the answer, because the content is not usually the problem. Teaching them how criterion C in individuals and societies wants a source handled, or how criterion B in mathematics wants a pattern described and then generalised, is a small and specific job. It takes four or five sessions per criterion and the mark moves visibly, which is also what makes a twelve-year-old believe the effort was worth it.

Lessons run live online from the apartment, at an hour set by the bus rather than by a tutor's commute. The practical effect is that a session can start at 5.15pm on a short-run Tuesday and 6.15pm on a long-run Thursday, and that nobody loses forty minutes each way on Al Khail Road. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we offer only in India, and that is stated here rather than discovered at booking.

At a glance

  • MYP reports criterion marks out of eight, not percentages
  • Four criteria sum to 32 and convert to a 1-7 grade
  • Criterion weaknesses carry straight into DP assessment under new names
  • Downtown children commute out daily; no school sits inside the district
  • All lessons are delivered live online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Middle Years Programme spans five years and three school phases, and what a tutor should be doing changes completely across them. These are the stages Downtown families ask about, and what each one needs.

MYPAges 11-13 · Years 6-8

MYP 1-2, the first two years

The first contact with criterion-based assessment, usually after a Primary Years Programme or a national system that used percentages. Students are learning what a command term means and what a criterion descriptor is actually asking for. The useful tutoring here is study skills and assessment literacy, not subject content, because the content is not yet hard.

In Dubai this stage often coincides with a family arriving from another country, so a child meets criterion marking and a new school system in the same term. A short block of sessions focused on reading a task sheet properly resolves more of that than subject teaching does.

MYPAges 13-15 · Years 8-10

MYP 3-4, where the gap opens

Content depth increases across all eight subject groups at once and the interdisciplinary demands rise. This is where a single weak criterion starts to show up in several subjects simultaneously, because criterion C in most subject groups is about communicating and criterion D is about critical application. A student who cannot structure an extended written response is marked down four times over.

Downtown and Business Bay families most often seek MYP help at this stage, and the trigger is usually a report where the grades dropped by one across several subjects at once. That pattern almost always points at a shared skill rather than at five separate content problems.

MYPAges 15-16 · Year 11

MYP 5 and the Personal Project

The final MYP year carries the Personal Project, a substantial independent piece documented in a process journal and reported against published criteria, plus any on-screen examinations and ePortfolios the school enters students for. Students who have coasted on content recall meet a project that rewards planning, evidence of process and honest self-assessment.

In Dubai, MYP 5 is also the year the post-16 decision is made between the IB Diploma and an A Level route, often at a different school. Project deadlines and option deadlines collide, and a tutor's most useful contribution is frequently helping a student protect project time rather than teaching anything.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

What MYP leads into

The Diploma Programme assesses six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. MYP criteria map onto DP assessment closely but not obviously: inquiring and designing becomes Research design in a science investigation, investigating patterns becomes most of the mathematical exploration, and the Personal Project's process journal is the direct ancestor of the Extended Essay's researcher's reflection space.

Dubai students moving from MYP into DP at the same school find the administration smooth and the assessment jarring. The grade scale looks identical, 1 to 7, but it is reached a different way: MYP adds criterion marks, DP weights examination papers. That difference is worth explaining to a student in MYP 5 rather than in DP1.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP requests from the central corridor cluster in a few subject groups, usually because of one criterion rather than the whole subject. These are the ones we are asked for most, with the criterion that is normally the real problem.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Criteria are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The usual losses are in criterion B, where a hypothesis has no justified variable range, and criterion C, where data is tabulated but never properly processed.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Criterion B is the one that separates students: describing a pattern earns little, generalising it and then justifying the generalisation earns the top band.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria are knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Criterion D is where marks are lost most, because students summarise sources accurately and never evaluate their origin, purpose or limitations, which is what the descriptor actually asks for.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria are analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. The commonest issue is criterion A: a student retells the plot instead of analysing how a writer achieves an effect, which is the same gap that limits DP English Paper 1 later.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Assessed in phases rather than year groups, across listening, reading, speaking and writing. Dubai students often sit in a phase that no longer matches their ability because placement happened on arrival. A phase check is worth doing before any tutoring is planned.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria are inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Design marks reward documented iteration, which students resist because it feels like paperwork. The habit it builds is the one the Personal Project rewards a year or two later.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Assessed through a process portfolio as well as a finished product, with criteria covering knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. Students who produce strong work and document nothing lose marks they have genuinely earned elsewhere.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Includes a written and reflective component alongside performance, which surprises families who expect a practical subject. The planning and reflection criteria are where the grade is usually decided, and both are coachable at a desk.

Arabic

MYP 1-5, first and additional language

Taken both as a language acquisition subject and as a KHDA requirement for schools in Dubai. Written and oral assessment rewards drilled structures more than vocabulary breadth, and separate streams exist for Arab and non-Arab students.

Personal Project

MYP 5

An independent project documented in a process journal and reported against published criteria. Marks are lost on evidence of process rather than on the product, because students build something good and record almost nothing about how they decided to build it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats for MYP students, all live online. The choice depends on whether the report shows one weak criterion, a broad dip across subjects, or a Personal Project in trouble.

Single-criterion blocks

Four to six sessions aimed at one criterion in one subject group, with the published descriptor open on screen throughout. The commonest requests are sciences criterion B, mathematics criterion B and individuals and societies criterion D. Short, specific and measurable, because the next assessment gives a number.

  • The descriptor is read with the student, band by band
  • Past work re-marked against it so the gap is visible
  • A model response built by the student, not supplied to them
  • Finishes when the next criterion mark moves

Cross-subject skills work

For the report where every grade dropped by one at the same time. That pattern usually means a shared skill rather than five content problems: structuring an extended response, handling a source, or presenting working clearly. One tutor can fix it once, and the gain appears across several subjects.

  • Diagnosis from the report and two or three marked pieces
  • One shared skill identified rather than five separate plans
  • Taught in whichever subject the student finds easiest
  • Transfer to the other subjects checked explicitly

Personal Project process coaching

Support on planning, process journal discipline and self-assessment against the criteria, for MYP 5 students. The project, the product and every word of the report stay entirely the student's own work. What a tutor adds is scope realism and a habit of recording decisions as they are made.

  • Goal narrowed until it is achievable in the time available
  • Process journal routine established in week one
  • Criteria read before the report is drafted, not after
  • No part of the project or report is produced by the tutor

Reading an MYP report properly: the four letters and what they mean

An MYP report gives a grade from 1 to 7 per subject, and underneath it, if the school publishes them, four criterion marks out of eight. The grade is derived from the sum of those four, through a published boundary table. The sum is what matters, and the distribution inside it matters more. Two students can both come out with a 5 while having entirely different problems, and the overall grade conceals which is which.

The criteria are named differently in each subject group but they follow a pattern. Criterion A is almost always knowledge and understanding, which rewards recall and application. Criterion B is the inquiry or investigation criterion, which rewards designing, planning or pattern-finding. Criterion C is usually communication or production. Criterion D is usually the critical, evaluative or reflective one. A student who is strong on A and weak on B is a good learner who has never been taught to plan, which is a specific and very fixable thing.

The practical move for a parent is to stop looking at the grade and start looking at the shape. If criterion A is the highest and D the lowest across several subjects, the issue is evaluation and critical thinking, and it will limit DP assessment in every subject later. If B is the outlier, the issue is investigation design. If C is the outlier, the issue is written structure. In each case the tuition is a short block aimed at that one thing, not a general programme in the subject.

The table below sets out the four criteria for the subject groups Downtown families ask about most. Hold your child's report against it and the pattern usually appears within a minute.

From 32 criterion marks to a single grade, and why one band matters

Four criteria at eight marks each gives a maximum of 32, and that total converts to the familiar 1 to 7 grade through the published MYP boundary table. The bands are not evenly spaced, which has a consequence most parents never see: a two-mark gain in the right place can move a grade, while a four-mark gain in the wrong place moves nothing. Knowing where your child sits inside a band is worth more than knowing which band they are in.

Take a student on 18 out of 32. That sits at the top of the grade 4 band, one mark short of grade 5. If their weakest criterion is a 3, lifting that single criterion to a 5 moves the total to 20 and the grade to 5. If instead they spend a term improving their strongest criterion from a 6 to a 7, the total reaches 19 and the grade still moves, but the work was harder and the room left for improvement is now gone. Working on the weakest criterion is almost always the better investment, and it is also the easier one, because the lowest band descriptors are the least demanding to satisfy.

Schools do not usually explain this and are not obliged to. Reporting conventions vary across Dubai, with some schools publishing all four criterion marks and others publishing only the grade. If yours publishes only the grade, ask the subject teacher for the criterion breakdown; they will have it, because they generated it. That one email converts a vague report into an actionable plan.

The table shows the standard boundary structure and what each band typically means in practice. Confirm the exact boundaries your child's school applies, because the MYP permits some school-level implementation choices and a few schools report on a modified scale.

Where the Downtown day leaves room for an MYP student

MYP students are younger than Diploma students and tire earlier, which changes the scheduling problem rather than simplifying it. A thirteen-year-old who left a Boulevard lobby at 6.50am and reached home at 4.30pm has a usable window that closes around 7.30pm, not 9pm. Pushing a session later to suit a parent's working day produces an hour that looks like tuition and achieves very little, and most families only learn this after paying for a term of it.

The corridor matters here as much as it does for older students. Children bussed north to Al Safa, Al Satwa or Jumeirah are generally home between 3.45pm and 4.15pm, which makes a 5pm start comfortable and a 5.30pm start ideal. Children bussed south-east to Nad Al Sheba or across to Al Quoz are often not home until closer to 5pm, which means 6pm is the honest earliest start and the session should probably be sixty minutes rather than ninety. Co-curricular days add an hour to all of it.

There is a second constraint specific to this age group. MYP students carry homework from up to eight subject groups, and the assessment load clusters: schools commonly schedule several criterion assessments in the same fortnight. A session that is useful in a quiet week is a burden in an assessment week, so the sensible pattern is one fixed weekly hour with the content flexed to whatever is actually due, rather than a rigid syllabus march that ignores the school calendar.

Online delivery is what makes the narrow window usable at all, because no part of it is spent on travel at either end. It also means a session can move from Tuesday to Thursday in an assessment-heavy week without anybody writing off a journey, and that flexibility is worth more to an MYP family than to a DP family.

MYP 5, the Personal Project and the honesty line

  • Marks are lost on documented process, not on the product
  • A journalling routine established in month one is the main intervention
  • A tutor coaches scope and reflection; the student does all the work
  • Official IB guides are linked or school-issued, never reproduced

The Personal Project is the piece of MYP work parents in Dubai worry about most, and with some reason: it is substantial, largely unsupervised, and documented through a process journal that students find unnatural. It is also the clearest ancestor of the Extended Essay, and a student who learns to record decisions as they make them in MYP 5 is a student who will not be reconstructing a researcher's reflection space from memory in DP2.

The marks are lost in a predictable place. Students choose an ambitious goal, build something genuinely good, and then discover that the report asks for evidence of a process they did not document. A product that works and a journal with four entries scores poorly. A modest product with a thorough record of decisions, dead ends and revisions scores well. Explaining that in month one, rather than in the week before submission, is most of the available value a tutor can add.

The honesty line has to be drawn firmly here, because the Dubai market includes businesses that sell completed coursework. A tutor may help a student narrow a goal until it is achievable, establish a journalling routine, read the published criteria with them, ask the questions that produce a usable reflection, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not design the project, build the product, write the journal, or draft any part of the report. The work must be the student's own, and the consequence of a breach falls on the student.

We also do not supply IB documents as downloads. Subject guides, project guides and assessment criteria are published by the IB and we point to the official source or to the version your child's school has issued, rather than reproducing material we do not own.

The MYP to DP transition, subject by subject

Families in Downtown making the post-16 decision usually ask whether MYP prepares a child for the Diploma, and the answer is yes in skills and no in format. The skills map almost one to one. What does not transfer is the assessment mechanism: MYP adds criterion marks from internally assessed tasks, while the Diploma weights externally examined papers with one internally assessed component. A student who has never sat a three-hour paper arrives in DP1 with excellent inquiry skills and no examination stamina.

The specific transitions are worth naming because each has a different gap. In sciences, MYP criterion B and C become the DP Scientific Investigation's Research design and Data analysis almost directly, but DP adds two written papers with a data booklet and command-term conventions the MYP never used. In mathematics, MYP criterion B becomes the heart of the DP mathematical exploration, while DP Paper 1 in Analysis and Approaches is sat without a calculator, which exposes any arithmetic the MYP permitted a device to do.

In language and literature, the MYP's analysing criterion becomes DP Paper 1 guided analysis, and the gap is timed writing rather than analytical ability. In individuals and societies, the thinking critically criterion becomes most of what a DP history or economics paper rewards, and the gap is content volume. Across all subjects, the Diploma core adds Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS on top, which is a workload change rather than a skills change.

The table maps each transition with the gap and roughly how much bridging work it takes. A student who does that bridging in the summer between MYP 5 and DP1 starts the Diploma differently from one who discovers the gap in October.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies inside an MYP timetable

Every Dubai private school teaches these subjects regardless of the international curriculum it is licensed to deliver, and MYP families are frequently surprised by how the requirements work in practice. KHDA's published guidance makes Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies mandatory across all Dubai private schools, with the requirements to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April.

The organisational rules are specific and they explain things parents notice but cannot account for. For Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, and KHDA states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. That is why your child may be in a different Arabic set from a classmate in the same form group, and it is a regulatory requirement rather than a setting decision.

Language of instruction is also set. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arab students and for Arabic as a first language. Arabic is the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students, while non-Arab students are taught Islamic Education and Moral, Social and Cultural studies in the language of the school's licensed curriculum. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes.

One constraint affects tutoring directly. For these mandatory subjects, KHDA states that the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited. Practically, that means support in Arabic or Islamic Education should work from the material the school uses rather than from an alternative syllabus, and any tutor offering a parallel curriculum in these subjects is offering something that does not fit the rules. KHDA also requires schools to ensure that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate approval from KHDA to teach them, which applies to school staff rather than to private tutors.

What MYP tuition costs, and why families spend too little too late

The pattern across the central corridor is consistent and expensive. Families notice a criterion problem in MYP 3, decide it is early and probably nothing, and then buy a great deal of tuition in DP1 to repair a skill that would have taken five sessions to fix at thirteen. Pricing the two options against each other makes the case better than any argument: five sessions at mid-market rates against a year of Diploma-level support is not a close comparison.

The published market rates give the arithmetic. Unitors lists IGCSE tuition from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts weekly one-hour tutoring at AED 240 to AED 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. At the lower end, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to AED 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52; at the upper end TutorChase quotes AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 for named or examiner-linked tutors. In-home delivery sits across those bands with travel loaded in, at AED 180 to AED 350 per Bestimate and AED 200 to AED 500 for independent home tutors.

An MYP criterion block, four to six sessions in the mid-market band, costs in the region of AED 600 to AED 1,800 in total depending on the tier chosen. The DP-year equivalent for the same unaddressed skill is a specialist rate across two or three terms. The MYP intervention is also easier to buy well, because the success condition is explicit: the next criterion mark either moves or it does not, and you find out within a few weeks.

For context on household budgeting, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package. Fees are flat; tutoring is the discretionary line. Every figure quoted in this section belongs to the provider named beside it and none is an IB Gram price. We quote after the free trial lesson, once the subject group, the criterion and the frequency are known.

Getting started with an MYP tutor, and what to do if the hour is full

  • Ask the subject teacher for the four criterion marks before booking
  • Send the subject group, MYP year, criterion and the hour your child is home
  • The trial lesson re-marks your child's own work against the descriptor
  • MYP demand concentrates between 5pm and 7pm and we say when it is full

The useful first step is not booking anything. It is getting the four criterion marks for the subject you are worried about, which the subject teacher holds whether or not the report prints them. One email produces a breakdown that turns a vague worry into a specific job, and it also tells you whether the problem sits in one subject or in a skill shared across several.

With that in hand, the match is straightforward. Tell us the subject group, the MYP year, the criterion in question and the hour your child is realistically home from the bus, and we will shortlist tutors who teach that subject group at that level and are free then. The first lesson is free and is a real lesson: the tutor reads the descriptor with your child and re-marks a piece of their past work against it, which is usually the moment a twelve-year-old understands what they have been losing marks for.

Availability is honest rather than assumed. Demand across Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC concentrates between roughly 5pm and 7pm on weekdays because every family is working around the same bus returns, and the MYP window is narrower than the Diploma one because younger students cannot take a late slot. When an hour is full we offer a different hour, a different day, or a named wait. We do not substitute a Diploma tutor onto an MYP 2 request and hope the age difference does not show, because it does.

Two closing disclosures. Some of our MYP tutors are UAE residents and others teach from India, where our in-home service operates, working with Dubai students over live video in Gulf Standard Time. And IB Gram runs no office, centre or branch in the UAE and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the country, so there is nothing to arrange at your end beyond a quiet room and a charged laptop.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Downtown Dubai

Downtown Dubai heads a dense central corridor whose families use the same schools and the same roads. The timing arithmetic below applies across all of these districts with the drive times adjusted.

Downtown Dubai

Boulevard towers and Old Town low-rises, served by Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro. No school inside the district, which is why every MYP timetable here starts with a bus.

Business Bay

South across the Dubai Canal with its own metro station. The same campuses serve both districts, and pickups here run slightly later, pushing the evening slot back by half an hour.

DIFC

A financial free zone with a separate court system, though schools remain under KHDA. Parents working in the towers above commonly need sessions after 7pm, which suits MYP students less than DP students.

Sobha Hartland

A school destination rather than a commute origin, with both IB continuum and British campuses. A large share of Downtown's southbound buses terminate here.

Al Jaddaf and Culture Village

Creek-side communities with a short school run and an IB school within ten minutes. MYP families here report the earliest home arrivals in the corridor.

Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villa districts whose schools draw from Downtown apartments. The afternoon return along Al Khail Road is slow, so MYP students on this route are rarely settled before 5.15pm.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City

New villa developments between Meydan and Al Quoz, with schools opening into the area. Year groups here change size and composition between cohorts more than elsewhere.

Al Quoz and Al Quoz 4

Mixed residential and industrial, with several long-established schools. Afternoon traffic from Al Quoz back towards the Boulevard is the worst leg in the corridor.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Downtown Dubai

IB continuum campuses within reach of Downtown

Schools running the Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes, some continuing into the Diploma on the same campus. These generate most of the MYP enquiries from Downtown, Business Bay and DIFC, and their reporting conventions are where the criterion confusion starts.

  • Clarion School
  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School
  • Deira International School

Mixed-programme and British campuses nearby

Schools in Hartland, Meydan and Al Safa that run British curriculum routes, sometimes alongside IB programmes. Families in this corridor often compare an MYP route against an IGCSE route using these campuses, which is a real decision rather than a hypothetical one.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Get the criterion breakdown

Email the subject teacher and ask for the four criterion marks behind the reported grade. They generated them, so they have them. That breakdown tells you whether this is one criterion in one subject or one skill showing up in several, and those need different plans entirely.

  2. 02

Send the MYP year and the bus time

We ask for the subject group, the MYP year, the criterion of concern, the school and the hour your child is realistically home. Younger students cannot take a late slot, so the bus corridor genuinely limits which tutors are available to you, and we would rather know that first.

  3. 03

Use the free lesson to re-mark old work

The trial costs nothing. The most useful thing to do in it is read the published descriptor with your child and re-mark a piece of their own past work against it. For most students that hour is where the marking system stops being mysterious, and the effect on motivation is larger than the effect on knowledge.

  4. 04

    Work the weakest criterion first

Boundary bands are uneven, so lifting the lowest criterion by two marks often moves the grade while improving the strongest one does not. The block is planned around that arithmetic rather than around which topic the student enjoys, and it is explained to the student so they can see why.

  5. 05

Flex the content, keep the hour

The weekly slot stays fixed in Gulf Standard Time; what happens inside it follows whatever criterion assessment the school has scheduled. MYP assessment clusters into heavy fortnights, and a rigid syllabus plan that ignores the school calendar wastes the sessions that matter most.

  6. 06

    Stop when the mark moves

A criterion block has an explicit success condition: the next criterion mark either moves or it does not. If it moves, the block ends and you decide whether to start another. If it has not moved after six sessions, we change the approach or the tutor rather than extending quietly.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis at criterion level

We work from the four criterion marks rather than from the overall grade, because the grade hides which skill is missing. That is the difference between a plan aimed at one fixable thing and a general programme in a subject your child may already understand perfectly well.

Short blocks with a defined end

An MYP criterion block is four to six sessions with an explicit success condition. We would rather sell you five useful sessions and stop than a standing arrangement nobody reviews, and the published cost comparison on this page is the argument for intervening early rather than extensively.

Scheduled for a thirteen-year-old, not a seventeen-year-old

MYP sessions are placed in the earlier part of the evening window and kept to sixty minutes, because a younger student who got home at 4.30pm has a usable hour that closes well before a Diploma student's does. Later is not more convenient; it is less effective.

The Personal Project boundary held

A tutor coaches scope, journalling discipline and reflection questions. The project, the product and every word of the report remain the student's own work. We state that before taking a Personal Project request, because the Dubai market contains businesses that sell completed coursework.

The DP transition explained in MYP 5

The skills transfer from MYP to the Diploma; the assessment format does not. We map that subject by subject so a family making the post-16 decision knows what bridging work is involved, instead of meeting the gap in the first October of DP1.

No UAE premises and no home visits

IB Gram operates no office, centre or branch in the UAE and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the country. Home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Every MYP session for a Downtown family runs live online, and you know that before you enquire.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Downtown Dubai: your questions answered

What do the MYP criterion marks on my child's report actually mean?+

Each subject is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D, each marked out of eight. The four marks are added, giving a total out of 32, and that total converts through a published boundary table into the grade from 1 to 7 you see on the report. The pattern inside the four is what tells you something: a high A with a low B means a child who knows the content but has never been taught to plan an investigation. Ask the subject teacher for the breakdown if the report prints only the grade.

Why does my child score well on criterion A but badly on criterion B?+

Because the two reward different things and schools teach the first more than the second. Criterion A is knowledge and understanding, which rewards recall and application and responds to revision. Criterion B is the inquiry or investigation criterion, which rewards designing a method, choosing a sensible range of values, or finding and generalising a pattern. That is a taught skill rather than a learned body of content, and a student who has never had it explicitly taught will underperform on it indefinitely. It typically takes four to six focused sessions to shift.

Which MYP criterion should we work on first to move the grade?+

Almost always the lowest one. The boundary bands between grades are unevenly spaced, so a two-mark gain on a weak criterion often moves the grade while a two-mark gain on a strong one does not. The low bands are also easier to satisfy, because their descriptors are less demanding, so the same effort produces more marks there. A student sitting on 18 out of 32 with a weakest criterion of 3 can usually reach the next grade by lifting that single criterion rather than by improving everything.

Is MYP good preparation for the IB Diploma, or does it leave students behind?+

It prepares the skills well and the format badly. MYP criterion B in sciences becomes Research design in the DP Scientific Investigation; criterion B in mathematics becomes the core of the mathematical exploration; the Personal Project's process journal is the direct ancestor of the Extended Essay's reflection space. What MYP does not provide is experience of long externally examined papers, command-term conventions, or the sheer content volume a Diploma subject carries. A short bridging block in the summer before DP1 is the efficient answer.

Why did my child build a good Personal Project and still get a mediocre mark?+

It is reported against published criteria and documented through a process journal, and the marks are lost on evidence of process rather than on the product. The common pattern is an ambitious goal, a genuinely good finished product, and a journal with four entries written retrospectively. A modest product with a thorough record of decisions, dead ends and revisions scores better than an impressive product with no record. Establishing a journalling routine in the first month is the single highest-value intervention available.

What is a Personal Project tutor allowed to do, and what must my child do alone?+

Yes, inside a clear boundary. A tutor may help narrow a goal until it is achievable in the time available, set up a journalling routine, read the published criteria with the student, ask the questions that produce a usable reflection, and give feedback on a draft the student has written themselves. A tutor may not choose the project, build the product, write journal entries or draft any part of the report. The work must be the student's own, and the consequence of a breach falls on the student rather than the tutor.

What time should an MYP session start if my child is bussed from Downtown Dubai?+

Earlier than you might schedule a Diploma student. A thirteen-year-old who left the building at 6.50am has a usable window that closes around 7.30pm. Children bussed north to Al Safa or Al Satwa are usually home by 4.15pm, so 5pm to 5.30pm works well. Children bussed to Nad Al Sheba or Al Quoz are often not home until closer to 5pm, which makes 6.15pm the honest earliest start. Sixty minutes suits this age better than ninety, and co-curricular days need the slot moved rather than squeezed.

My child's grades dropped by one across several subjects at once. What causes that?+

Usually a shared skill rather than several separate content problems. Criterion C in most subject groups concerns communicating or producing text, and criterion D concerns critical or evaluative thinking, so a student who cannot structure an extended written response or evaluate a source is marked down in every subject that assesses it. The diagnostic move is to compare which criterion letter is lowest across subjects. If it is the same letter each time, one tutor fixing one skill produces a gain that appears everywhere.

Does my child have to study Arabic and Islamic Education alongside the MYP in Dubai?+

Yes. KHDA's published guidance makes Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with requirements to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and KHDA states combined classes are strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with any mandatory subject lesson advised to run at least 25 minutes.

Can we get Arabic support that follows the school's own material?+

That is the only form of support that fits the rules properly. For the mandatory UAE subjects, KHDA states that use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, so tutoring in Arabic, Islamic Education or Social Studies should work from the material the school uses rather than from an alternative syllabus. A tutor offering a parallel Arabic curriculum is offering something that does not align with the requirement. Ask the school which textbook and scheme they follow before any session is planned.

How many sessions does an MYP criterion block usually take?+

Four to six for a single criterion in a single subject, with the next criterion assessment as the test of whether it worked. The sequence is short because the job is specific: read the descriptor band by band, re-mark the student's own past work against it, then have the student produce a response that satisfies the higher band and check it. Six to eight sessions is more realistic where the same criterion is weak across several subjects, because transfer has to be checked in each one separately rather than assumed.

What does MYP tutoring cost in Dubai compared with waiting until the Diploma?+

Considerably less, which is the strongest argument for acting early. Using published market figures, Unitors lists tuition from AED 150 an hour at IGCSE level, so a four-to-six session criterion block costs roughly AED 600 to AED 900. Repairing the same skill in DP1 means two terms of weekly support, which at Unitors' IB rate from AED 200 an hour is from around AED 4,800. Bestimate's exam-year specialist band runs AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more a month. These are published provider figures, not IB Gram prices.

Is my child in the right language acquisition phase?+

It is worth checking, because phase placement often happens on arrival and is rarely revisited. Language acquisition is assessed in phases rather than year groups, across listening, reading, speaking and writing, and a student placed in a phase on the basis of a first-week assessment may have moved well beyond it or may be struggling in one that was set too high. Ask the language teacher which phase your child is assessed in and whether the placement has been reviewed this year. A mismatch explains more reports than parents expect.

Do you tutor MYP students in Business Bay and DIFC as well as Downtown?+

Yes, and the scheduling logic is close to identical because the three districts share schools and roads. Business Bay pickups run slightly later than Downtown for the same campuses, which pushes the workable session start back by around half an hour. DIFC parents more often ask for late slots because they work in the towers above, and for MYP students we will usually push back on anything after 7.45pm on a school night and suggest a weekend morning instead. All sessions run live online in Gulf Standard Time.

What if no tutor is free in our MYP time slot?+

We tell you and give you options rather than filling the hour badly. Demand across the central corridor concentrates between roughly 5pm and 7pm on weekdays, and the MYP window is narrower than the Diploma one because younger students cannot usefully take a late session. The alternatives are a different hour, a different day, a weekend morning, or a named wait. We will not put a Diploma specialist onto an MYP 2 request on the assumption that the subject knowledge covers the age difference, because it does not.

Start with the criterion marks, then book a free MYP lesson

Email your child's subject teacher for the four criterion marks behind the reported grade, then send us the subject group, the MYP year, the criterion and the hour your child is realistically home from the bus. We will match a tutor who teaches that subject group at that level and run the first lesson free, live online in Gulf Standard Time. In that hour the tutor will re-mark a piece of your child's own work against the published descriptor, which is usually where the marking system stops being a mystery. IB Gram sends no tutors to homes in the UAE.
