IGCSE Maths Tutor in Arabian Ranches

An IGCSE maths tutor in Arabian Ranches is worth hiring for one thing: knowing exactly which paper your child is sitting and precisely where its mark scheme gives marks away. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different specifications with different papers, tiers and calculator rules. This page sets out both, the topics that cost students most, the method and accuracy marks nobody is taught to collect, and how a past paper should be worked. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Matched to the syllabus code on your child's entry, not to the subject name
  • Mark-scheme notation taught explicitly: M1, A1, B1, follow-through
  • One-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home visits are India-only
  • Free trial lesson first: one session, before any payment is taken

IB & IGCSE in Arabian Ranches

The specification, the mark scheme and the past paper

Mathematics is the subject where a tutor's knowledge of the paper matters most, because the content is almost entirely public and almost entirely teachable, and yet the marks keep going missing. A Year 11 student in Arabian Ranches who can factorise, solve simultaneous equations and use the sine rule should not be sitting on a 5. Usually they are, and usually the reason is not mathematical. It is that nobody has shown them how the mark scheme distributes marks, or made them work a past paper in a way that teaches rather than confirms.

Start with the specification, because two students in the same classroom on this belt can be entered for different things. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is 0580, with Core and Extended routes. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1, with Foundation and Higher tiers. Cambridge Additional Mathematics is 0606 and Pearson's Further Pure is 4PM1, both taken alongside the main course by students heading for A Level Mathematics. The papers, the tiering and the calculator rules differ between them, and the rules have been revised recently, so the awarding body's own page for your child's series is the only place to confirm them.

Then the mark scheme. IGCSE mathematics mark schemes award method marks and accuracy marks separately, and they are generous in a way that students never exploit because nobody has told them it exists. A method mark survives an arithmetic slip. A follow-through mark pays for correct work built on an earlier wrong answer. Both require the working to be visible and legible on the page. A student who does three lines in their head and writes the answer has thrown away every method mark in the question, and the loss is invisible until a mock comes back.

Then the past paper, which almost every family in this community already has and almost nobody uses properly. Working a paper means sitting it in one go, at the right time of day, without notes, then marking it against the published mark scheme line by line and classifying every lost mark. Doing the questions over several evenings with the mark scheme open is not working a paper; it is reading a paper. The first produces a diagnosis. The second produces a feeling of progress, which is worse than nothing because it is mistaken for the first.

On delivery, the honest position. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai; sending tutors to houses is a service we operate only in India. Mathematics teaching here is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared screen or writing surface so the working is visible both ways. For this subject that is not a compromise: the whole lesson is working, step by step, and a shared annotated page is a better record of it than a kitchen table, because the student keeps the file afterwards and the marks that were missed stay marked.

At a glance

  • Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different specifications; confirm the code
  • Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher carry different grade ceilings
  • Method marks survive arithmetic slips, but only if the working is visible
  • Follow-through marks pay for correct work built on an earlier wrong answer
  • A past paper worked properly means one timed sitting and strict marking
  • Lessons run live online; home visits are a service we operate only in India

Four mathematics qualifications sit behind this search, and the choice between them is usually made by the school rather than the family. Each entry below describes what the course actually contains and what it opens afterwards, which is the part that decides how much a particular grade is worth.

0580Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

Two written papers, entered on either the Core or the Extended route, with Extended carrying the higher grades and additional content that Core does not examine. Topics run across number, algebra and graphs, coordinate geometry, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, vectors and transformations, probability and statistics. Paper numbering, durations and calculator permissions depend on the route and the series, and have changed in recent syllabus editions.

The commonest maths entry in the British-curriculum schools serving Arabian Ranches. The route is chosen by the school from Year 10 work, which makes Year 10 the year in which the grade ceiling is effectively decided. Ask the exams officer for the route and the paper numbers in writing, and confirm the calculator rules on cambridgeinternational.org for the exact series.

4MA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Two written papers of equal weight, entered at Foundation or Higher tier, with Higher carrying the top grades. Content covers number, algebra, sequences and functions, geometry and trigonometry, mensuration, vectors and transformation geometry, and statistics and probability. Examined in May or June and again in November, so a retake sits months rather than a year away.

Used by a minority of Dubai schools and occasionally for maths while the sciences sit with Cambridge in the same school. That split is the practical reason to work from the syllabus code rather than the subject name: a tutor planning from 0580 past papers for a 4MA1 candidate will be working on the right mathematics in the wrong format.

0606Ages 15-16 · Year 11, alongside 0580

Cambridge Additional Mathematics

An extra qualification taken alongside Extended Mathematics by students heading for A Level Mathematics. Content reaches into calculus, trigonometric identities, functions, logarithms, series and vectors, so it covers material most students meet for the first time in the sixth form. Assessed by written papers with no coursework component.

Offered by a number of schools near Arabian Ranches as a bridge into A Level, and it is a genuinely different subject rather than more of 0580. A student comfortably scoring well in Extended Mathematics can still struggle here, and the two need separate plans even when the same tutor covers both.

ALAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics

Two years of pure mathematics with statistics and mechanics, assessed externally. Entry conditions are set by each school and are usually subject-specific: a high grade in IGCSE Mathematics, and for Further Mathematics often a requirement at the top of the range or evidence from Additional Mathematics. The algebraic fluency assumed on day one is considerable.

Most British-curriculum schools near Arabian Ranches continue to A Level, and their published maths conditions are the real reason a single June grade matters. Read those conditions during Year 10 rather than after results, because a condition read early is a target and the same condition read in August is simply an outcome.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

An IGCSE mathematics grade is decided topic by topic, and the topics are not equally expensive. The list below is the content map with the honest note attached to each area: what the paper asks for, and what students on this belt most often lose there. Tiering determines which of these appear at all.

Number

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Fractions, percentages, ratio, standard form, bounds and surds depending on tier. Reverse percentages and upper and lower bounds produce more lost marks than their weighting suggests, because both look routine and both have a step most students skip. Cheap marks, quickly recovered, and usually the first thing worth drilling.

Algebra and graphs

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Manipulation, expansion, factorising, rearranging, simultaneous and quadratic equations, inequalities and graph sketching. This is the load-bearing wall of the whole subject: weakness here reappears in trigonometry, mensuration and statistics. Six to eight weeks of short frequent practice moves it, and nothing moves it faster.

Sequences and functions

Extended and Higher, with basics at Core

Linear and quadratic nth terms, function notation, composite and inverse functions at the higher tiers. Students lose marks by describing a pattern instead of producing a general rule, which is the same error that costs them in investigations. Notation marks are available and routinely dropped for untidy work.

Coordinate geometry

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Gradients, midpoints, lengths, parallel and perpendicular lines and the equation of a straight line. Reliable marks for a student who learns the four formulas properly, and a surprising source of loss when a negative reciprocal is rushed. Quick to secure and worth doing before the harder topics.

Geometry and circle theorems

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Angle rules, polygons, congruence, similarity and circle theorems at the higher tiers. Marks here depend on naming the reason, not just the angle: a correct value with no stated theorem loses the explanation mark. One of the clearest cases where knowing the mark scheme is worth more than knowing more geometry.

Mensuration

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Area, volume, surface area, arcs, sectors and compound solids. The usual losses are units, unconverted dimensions and premature rounding inside a multi-step calculation. All three are discipline rather than understanding, which makes them among the cheapest marks on the paper to win back in a fortnight.

Trigonometry

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Right-angled trigonometry, Pythagoras, bearings, and the sine and cosine rules plus three-dimensional work at the higher tiers. Bearings questions are the reliable trap because they test reading rather than trigonometry. Three-dimensional questions need a drawn diagram, and students who refuse to draw one lose the method marks.

Vectors and transformations

Extended and Higher, with basics at Core

Column vectors, magnitude, vector geometry proofs, and the four transformations with full descriptions. Transformation questions award marks for the complete description, so a rotation without a centre or a direction scores partially. Vector proofs need the route written in vectors rather than reasoned verbally.

Probability

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Single and combined events, tree diagrams, Venn diagrams and conditional probability at the higher tiers. Tree diagrams carry method marks for the structure itself, so drawing the tree earns marks before any arithmetic happens. Students who calculate without drawing lose those marks and never know it.

Statistics

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Averages, grouped data, cumulative frequency, histograms with unequal intervals, and box plots. Histograms with unequal class widths are the standard high-tier trap because frequency density has to be computed rather than read. Interpretation questions want a comparison in context, not a restatement of the numbers.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways to buy mathematics support, chosen by what is actually wrong rather than by how many hours a week sounds reasonable. All of them run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared writing surface so working is visible in both directions.

Weekly technique session

Sixty minutes a week on one named topic area plus the mark-scheme habits that go with it: showing working, collecting method marks, stating reasons in geometry, drawing the tree before calculating. Short and frequent beats long and occasional in this subject, because fluency is built by repetition.

  • One topic area per session, named in advance
  • Mark-scheme notation taught explicitly, not implied
  • Written feedback naming the marks lost and why
  • Short practice set between sessions, every week

Past-paper marking block

The student sits a full paper unaided and in one go; the session that follows marks it against the published mark scheme line by line and classifies every lost mark. Four of these across a term is usually more useful than a term of topic teaching, and it is the cheapest diagnostic available.

  • Paper sat in one timed sitting, no notes
  • Marked question by question against the real scheme
  • Lost marks sorted into named categories
  • A short plan after each one, not a general verdict

Accuracy and arithmetic drills

For the student who understands everything and still loses the final marks. Short, repeated, timed work on manipulation, rounding, units and conversions, with the marking strict. It is dull and it is the single most reliable grade-mover in IGCSE mathematics at any tier.

  • Ten to fifteen minutes of daily practice set
  • Strict marking: the final line either scores or does not
  • Units, bounds and rounding treated as content
  • Six to eight weeks before the gain is visible

Additional Mathematics bridge

For students taking 0606 or 4PM1 alongside the main course, or heading for A Level Mathematics. Calculus, trigonometric identities, functions and series are new material rather than extensions, so this runs as a separate plan even where the same teacher covers both courses.

  • Treated as a distinct course, not as extra 0580
  • Aimed at the A Level entry condition as well as the grade
  • Started in Year 11 autumn where possible
  • Reviewed against the school's own assessments

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Arabian Ranches

01

Which maths specification is your child actually sitting?

This is the first question and most families cannot answer it, which is reasonable because nothing in school communication makes it prominent. The entry carries a syllabus code and a tier, and those two facts determine which papers are sat, which topics can appear, what the maximum attainable grade is, and whether a calculator is permitted in each component. A tutor who does not have them is guessing, and in mathematics the guess is usually close enough to feel right and wrong enough to cost marks.

Four specifications cover nearly every student on this belt. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 runs Core and Extended. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1 runs Foundation and Higher. Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 and Pearson Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1 sit alongside the main course for students heading to A Level. The content overlaps substantially; the papers, the question styles, the formula provision and the calculator rules do not, and the calculator rules in particular have been revised in recent syllabus editions.

What to do about it takes one email. Ask the exams officer for the syllabus code, the tier, the paper numbers and the administrative zone for mathematics, and ask whether a calculator is permitted in each paper for your child's series. Then confirm the papers on cambridgeinternational.org or qualifications.pearson.com for that exact series rather than relying on a revision site, because an old edition of a specification is the most common reason a student practises the wrong thing diligently for a term.

The topic map, and where students on this belt actually lose marks

Mathematics marks do not go missing evenly. A handful of topics account for a disproportionate share of lost marks in every cohort, and they are not the topics families worry about. Parents worry about circle theorems and trigonometry. The marks tend to go on reverse percentages, upper and lower bounds, histograms with unequal class widths, and the stated reason in a geometry answer. None of those is conceptually hard. All of them have one step that is routinely skipped.

The pattern is worth naming because it changes what a session should do. Hard topics are lost because they were not understood, and the repair is teaching. Easy topics are lost because of a missing habit, and the repair is a rule plus repetition: always write the reason, always convert units first, always draw the tree, never round until the last line. Habit repairs are fast, they are cumulative across the paper, and they are almost never what a tutor is asked to work on.

The table below sorts the content map by what it costs rather than by where it sits in the syllabus. Use it with a marked script in hand: find the rows your child lost marks on, and notice whether they cluster in the understanding column or the habit column. A student whose losses are nearly all habits can move a grade in six weeks. A student whose losses are spread across the understanding column is a two-term project and should be told so honestly in November rather than in April.

03

Mark-scheme notation, and the marks nobody is taught to collect

IGCSE mathematics mark schemes are published documents written in a compact notation, and almost no student has ever read one. That is a strange situation, because the notation describes exactly how the marks are awarded and therefore exactly what a good answer looks like on paper. A student who understands it writes differently within a week: more working, clearer lines, the reason stated, the answer left exact until the end.

The important distinction is between method and accuracy. A method mark is awarded for a correct approach even where the arithmetic goes wrong afterwards, which means an answer that is wrong can still score most of the available marks, provided the method is visible. An accuracy mark is awarded for the correct value. Follow-through marks pay for correct subsequent work built on an earlier error. None of this helps a student who writes only the final answer, because an invisible method cannot be credited.

This is where an online lesson with a shared writing surface earns its place. The whole exercise is about what lands on the page, so a lesson in which both sides are writing on the same visible page, and in which the tutor annotates where a mark was available and not taken, teaches the habit faster than a conversation about it would. The student also keeps the annotated file afterwards, which means the correction survives the session instead of evaporating with it. Three weeks of that is usually enough to change how a script looks, and a script that looks different scores differently even before anything new has been learned.

04

Calculator discipline, and the papers worked by hand

Calculator rules in IGCSE mathematics differ between the awarding bodies, between routes, and between syllabus editions, and they were revised in recent editions, so the only reliable source is the awarding body's page for your child's exact series. That caveat matters more than it sounds, because a family practising from papers of the wrong edition can spend a term preparing with a calculator for a component that does not allow one, or the reverse.

Once the rules are confirmed, the two kinds of paper need genuinely different preparation. A paper worked by hand rewards mental arithmetic, fraction fluency, surd manipulation where the tier includes it, and a willingness to leave answers exact rather than converting to decimals early. A calculator paper rewards something quite different: knowing the machine, storing intermediate values instead of rewriting rounded ones, and checking a result by a second method rather than trusting the display.

Most of the lost marks in calculator papers on this belt are rounding marks, and they come from the same habit. A student computes an intermediate value, writes it down to two decimal places, then types that rounded number back in for the next step. The final answer then misses the required accuracy and the accuracy mark goes, while the method marks survive. The fix is a rule rather than a lesson: keep everything in the calculator memory, round only on the final line, and state the answer to the accuracy the question demands.

05

How to work a past paper so that it teaches

  • One sitting, timed, no notes, at the time of day the real paper runs
  • Marked strictly against the published mark scheme, line by line
  • Every lost mark classified into one of five named categories
  • Act on the proportions between categories, not on the total score
  • Keep the marked script; it is the only record of what changed
  • Four properly worked papers a term beats weekly lessons without any

Every family in Arabian Ranches already has access to past papers, and most of them use them in the way that produces the least learning. The usual pattern is to attempt questions across several evenings, with notes nearby and the mark scheme open when a question stalls. That produces a pleasant sense of coverage and almost no diagnostic information, because the conditions have nothing in common with the conditions of the real paper.

Working a paper properly has four parts and the first is the hardest. Sit it in one go, timed, without notes, at roughly the time of day the real paper is sat. Mark it afterwards against the published mark scheme, strictly, line by line, giving no credit the scheme would not give. Classify every lost mark into one of five categories: never taught, taught but not understood, understood but mis-executed, ran out of time, or answered a different question. Then act on the proportions rather than on the total.

The proportions are the whole point. A script losing most of its marks to mis-execution and timing needs drills and timed sections, not more teaching. A script with blanks in two topics needs those two topics taught, and nothing else. A script losing marks evenly across every category is telling you the content is not secure, and that is a two-term conversation. Four papers worked this way across a term tells a family more than a year of weekly lessons without one, and it costs nothing but the student's own Saturday mornings.

06

Algebra is the rest of the subject in disguise

If one area has to be prioritised, it is algebraic fluency, because almost every other topic eventually asks for it. Trigonometry needs rearranging. Mensuration needs substitution and solving. Statistics needs manipulation inside a formula. Coordinate geometry is algebra with a diagram attached. A student who is slow and uncertain at manipulation is paying that tax in every topic on the paper, which is why their marks look spread out when the cause is concentrated.

The practical consequence is a different sequencing of work from the one most plans use. The intuitive plan works through the syllabus in order and tries to shore up each topic as it arrives. The effective plan spends the first few weeks on manipulation until it is quick and automatic, then returns to the topics, most of which improve without being taught again. Families find this counter-intuitive because it looks like time spent away from the problem, and it is the shortest route to the problem.

It is also why Year 10 is the right year to do it. Fluency is built by repetition over months and cannot be assembled in a fortnight, so a student who arrives in Year 11 with weak manipulation is carrying a cost that cannot be fully removed before June. It can be reduced, materially, by six to eight weeks of short daily practice. It cannot be eliminated, and anyone promising otherwise in March is selling something. The honest version of that conversation names the gap, states what six weeks will and will not recover, and leaves the family to decide whether the remaining marks are worth the hours.

What an IGCSE maths tutor costs around Arabian Ranches, and what the money buys

It helps to ask what a given rate is actually buying in this subject, because the answer differs sharply by band. At the bottom, EdFlik lists online tutoring from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. That money buys somebody who can do the mathematics and talk a student through a question. It does not buy mark-scheme knowledge, and in a subject where a third of the recoverable marks are mark-scheme habits, that is a significant part of the job left undone.

In the middle, Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 an hour and TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts a specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above, and BartyED's examiner-led rate is AED 650. What the step up from AED 65 to AED 200 buys in mathematics specifically is somebody who has marked papers: who can look at a script and say which marks were available and not taken, which is a different skill from being able to solve the question. In-home delivery is quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent providers, and that premium pays for travel rather than for mark-scheme experience.

Monthly, Bestimate estimates AED 240 to 600 at the budget end for one weekly hour, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more where an exam-year specialist is involved. Market packages run roughly AED 799 a month for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. Set against the lead times earlier on this page, a sensible purchase in mathematics is often smaller than families expect: a past-paper marking block of four sessions plus a daily ten-minute drill moves more marks than twelve hours of topic teaching. Every figure here belongs to the provider named, on the date its own page carried it; IB Gram publishes no rate card on this page and the first lesson is free.

Additional Mathematics, and the bridge into A Level

Students heading for A Level Mathematics are often entered for Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 or Pearson Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1 alongside the main course, and families regularly treat it as extra practice for the same subject. It is not. The content reaches into calculus, trigonometric identities, functions, logarithms and series, which most students meet for the first time in the sixth form. A student scoring well on Extended Mathematics can genuinely struggle here, and the struggle says nothing about their main grade.

The useful way to think about it is as the first term of A Level brought forward. That reframing changes the teaching: more emphasis on exact answers, on manipulating expressions rather than evaluating them, and on multi-step problems where the method has to be chosen rather than recognised. It also changes the timetable, because a student carrying both courses needs the additional one planned separately rather than folded into the same weekly hour.

On the decision itself, the honest position is that it suits a student who already finds Extended or Higher mathematics comfortable, and loads a student who does not. It is also worth checking what the receiving sixth form actually requires: some schools near Arabian Ranches use it as evidence for Further Mathematics entry, others do not reference it at all. Ask the question in Year 10 rather than after the entries are made, and treat tutoring as support for the choice rather than as a reason to make it. Tutoring is not required for any entry decision, and nobody should imply that it is.

Permits, honesty and getting started from Arabian Ranches

Before any booking, two checks. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, with MoHRE's own service page listing no fee and a two-working-day completion time through the smart app, website or e-services system. Ask to see it in the tutor's own name with its expiry. Then ask whether they teach at your child's school, because the permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school.

On materials and honesty, the rule in mathematics is simpler than in coursework subjects but still worth stating. Specifications, past papers and mark schemes are published by Cambridge and Pearson on their own sites for the appropriate series, and that is where a family should get them; a tutor may point you to the right page and should not be circulating copies. No tutor should promise a grade in this or any subject, and a mathematics tutor in particular should be able to say plainly which lost marks are recoverable in the time available and which are not.

Getting started takes four things: the syllabus code, the tier, the last marked script, and the evening window that genuinely exists once the bus has reached the community. The trial lesson is free and the condition is stated: one session, before any payment, with no card details taken beforehand and written feedback afterwards. Mathematics fills first in the evening slots across this belt, so if the hour you want is not available we say so and offer a different evening or a short wait rather than filling it with somebody approximate.

Where we tutor

Maths demand and workable slots across the Dubailand communities

Mathematics is the most requested subject on this belt and the first to fill in the evening slots, so the practical local detail is when a session can realistically happen and what families in each community are usually asking for. The notes below cover both rather than describing the scenery.

Buses arrive between about 15:45 and 16:15, which makes 17:00 the earliest sensible maths slot and 17:30 the reliable one. Demand here splits between Year 10 algebra rebuilds and Year 11 past-paper work, and the two need different session lengths.

Arabian Ranches 2

Casa, Rosa and Palma, with slightly later arrivals. A ninety-minute slot at 17:30 works better here than two sixty-minute slots, because a full past-paper section needs more than an hour once the marking is included.

Arabian Ranches 3

Furthest out, and the community where weekend mornings carry the timed papers. A full Extended paper takes two hours plus marking, which never fits a weekday evening, so protecting a Saturday slot is the right instinct here.

Dubai Hills Estate

Shorter school runs mean a 16:30 start is genuinely available, which matters in maths because the subject rewards short frequent contact. Two shorter sessions a week beat one long one for arithmetic and algebra fluency.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

Centres here run group maths revision courses, which cover content well and cannot address an individual's mark-scheme habits. Families in these communities often need the second thing and buy the first, because the first is advertised.

Town Square and Mudon

Heavy Year 10 and Year 11 numbers and maths-dominated demand. This is where the tier conversation matters most, because an Extended or Higher entry is still winnable in Year 10 and fixed by the spring of Year 11.

DAMAC Hills, DAMAC Hills 2 and Remraam

The longest afternoon journeys on the belt and therefore the latest slots. A 19:30 maths session is the one that survives the term here, and it also has the widest choice of teacher because nobody is driving to it.

Where the algebra foundations were laid on this belt

Primary and all-through schools inside or beside the Dubailand communities. Most Year 11 algebra weakness traces back to Years 7 to 9 rather than to Year 10, which is why the diagnostic starts earlier than the current topic. Licensed curricula are published by KHDA and change between years.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the code, the tier and the calculator rules

Ask the exams officer for the syllabus code, the tier, the paper numbers and whether a calculator is permitted in each paper for your child's series. Then confirm on the awarding body's own page. An old syllabus edition is the commonest reason a student practises the wrong format diligently for a whole term.

  2. 02

    Send the last marked script

A marked paper or school assessment shows whether the lost marks are understanding or habit, and those have completely different lead times. Six weeks fixes a habit. Two terms fixes insecure content. Nobody can tell the two apart from a description of how your child feels about maths.

  3. 03

Take the free trial lesson on a real question

One lesson at no charge, booked before any payment and with no card details taken first. It runs on an actual question from the script, with the mark scheme open, so you can see whether the teacher can name the marks that were available and missed. Written feedback follows the session.

  4. 04

Fix the practice, not just the lesson

Every lead time in this subject assumes ten to fifteen minutes of drill most days plus one timed paper a fortnight. Write that into the plan in hours. Weekly lessons without practice in between produce about a third of the progress, and no rate per hour changes that arithmetic.

  5. 05

Review on a marked paper, not on a feeling

After four or five sessions, sit a full paper under timed conditions and mark it strictly. The script either shows movement in the categories you targeted or it does not. At that point we continue, change teacher, or stop, and the decision is made on evidence rather than on impressions.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the specification, not the subject name

Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 differ in papers, tiering, formula provision and calculator rules, and the rules have been revised recently. We ask for the code and the tier before matching a teacher, and we point you to the awarding body's page for the exact series rather than to a revision site.

Mark-scheme notation taught explicitly

Method marks, accuracy marks, independent marks and follow-through are published in every mark scheme and read by almost no student. Teaching the notation changes how a student writes within a week, and it is the fastest source of recoverable marks available in this subject at any tier.

Habit repairs separated from understanding repairs

Reverse percentages and frequency density are understanding problems. Units, rounding, stated reasons and visible working are habits. The two have different lead times and different prices, and telling a family which they are buying is the difference between a six-week plan and a wasted term.

Past papers worked properly, or not counted

One timed sitting, no notes, strict marking against the published scheme, every lost mark classified. Four papers worked that way across a term tell a family more than a year of weekly lessons without one, and the only cost is the student's own Saturday morning.

Honest about what cannot be recovered

Algebraic fluency is built over months and cannot be assembled in a fortnight, so a Year 11 student with weak manipulation in March can be improved materially and not completely. We say so. Nobody here promises a grade, and no part of any assessed submission is produced for a student.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Arabian Ranches: your questions answered

Which maths specification is my child sitting, 0580 or 4MA1?+

Only the school can tell you, and the exams officer can do it in one reply. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is 0580 with Core and Extended routes; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1 with Foundation and Higher tiers. Ask for the code, the tier, the paper numbers and whether a calculator is permitted in each paper for your child's series, then confirm the papers on the awarding body's own page. It matters because the question styles, the formula provision and the calculator rules differ, and a tutor planning from the wrong specification will be teaching the right mathematics in the wrong format.

What is the difference between Core and Extended in Cambridge Mathematics 0580?+

They are two routes through the same subject with different content coverage and different grade ceilings. Extended examines additional topics that Core does not, and the top grades are available only on the Extended route. The school decides which route to enter a candidate for, usually on the strength of Year 10 performance, which makes Year 10 the year in which the ceiling is effectively set. Ask which route your child is on and by when it could still be changed; the honest answer is normally the entry deadline for the series, and after that it is fixed.

What does M1 mean on an IGCSE maths mark scheme?+

M1 is a method mark: one mark awarded for using a correct method, whether or not the arithmetic that follows is right. It is the single most useful thing a student can understand about how maths is marked, because it means a wrong final answer can still collect most of the available marks provided the method is written down and legible. A1 is an accuracy mark for the correct value, B1 is an independent mark for a correct statement on its own, and FT means later work is credited even though an earlier answer was wrong.

The answers are correct but the score is low. Where are those marks going?+

Usually accuracy or presentation rather than mathematics. The commonest causes are rounding an intermediate value and feeding the rounded number back into the next step, giving an answer to the wrong degree of accuracy, omitting units, or spoiling a correct answer by continuing past it where the scheme demands the correct answer only. In geometry it is often a correct angle with no theorem named, which loses the explanation mark. All of these are habits, they are cumulative across the paper, and they come back in two or three weeks of strict marking.

Which IGCSE maths topics cost students here the most marks?+

Not the ones families worry about. Reverse percentages, upper and lower bounds, histograms with unequal class widths, mensuration with mixed units, and stated reasons in circle theorem questions account for a disproportionate share of lost marks in most cohorts. None is conceptually difficult; each has a single step that gets skipped. The hard topics, trigonometry in three dimensions and vector proofs, lose fewer marks overall because fewer questions depend on them. Work from a marked script rather than from reputation when deciding what to target.

How should a Year 11 student actually work a past paper?+

In one timed sitting, without notes, at roughly the time of day the real paper is sat. Then mark it afterwards against the published mark scheme, strictly, line by line, awarding nothing the scheme would not award. Then classify every lost mark: never taught, taught but not understood, understood but mis-executed, ran out of time, or answered a different question. Act on the proportions between those categories rather than on the total. Attempting questions across several evenings with the mark scheme open is reading a paper, not working one, and it produces almost no diagnostic information.

Is my child allowed a calculator in every IGCSE maths paper?+

It depends on the board, the route and the series, and the rules have been revised in recent syllabus editions, so the awarding body's page for your child's exact series is the only reliable source. The practical consequence is worth taking seriously: a family practising from the wrong edition can spend a term preparing with a calculator for a component that does not permit one. Ask the exams officer for the paper numbers and the calculator position in writing, then check it against cambridgeinternational.org or qualifications.pearson.com for that series.

How much algebra does the rest of the IGCSE maths course depend on?+

Nearly all of it. Trigonometry needs rearranging, mensuration needs substitution and solving, statistics needs manipulation inside a formula, and coordinate geometry is algebra with a diagram. A student who is slow or uncertain at manipulation pays that cost in every topic, which is why their lost marks look scattered when the cause is concentrated. The effective sequence is therefore counter-intuitive: spend the first weeks on manipulation until it is automatic, then return to the topics, many of which improve without being taught again.

Should my child take Additional Mathematics alongside IGCSE Mathematics?+

It suits a student who already finds Extended or Higher mathematics comfortable and loads one who does not. Cambridge 0606 and Pearson 4PM1 reach into calculus, trigonometric identities, functions, logarithms and series, which is sixth-form material brought forward rather than extra practice on the main course. Check what the receiving sixth form actually requires, because some schools near Arabian Ranches use it as evidence for Further Mathematics entry and others do not reference it. Ask during Year 10, before entries are made, and treat tutoring as support for the choice rather than a reason to make it.

What grade does my child need in IGCSE maths for A Level Mathematics?+

Each school sets and publishes its own condition, and it is usually subject-specific rather than a single overall threshold, with Further Mathematics typically carrying a higher requirement than Mathematics. So the answer lives in your child's prospective sixth form's entry criteria rather than in any general rule. The useful move is to read those criteria during Year 10, when a condition is still a target, instead of in August, when it is simply an outcome. Then work backwards from the condition rather than from a vague wish for a better grade.

How many sessions does an IGCSE maths grade take to move?+

It depends entirely on what is wrong. Habit problems, which means units, rounding, stated reasons and invisible working, come back in two or three weeks of strict marking and are cumulative across the whole paper. A single misunderstood topic such as frequency density is usually one or two sessions. Weak algebraic manipulation is six to eight weeks of short daily practice and cannot be compressed. A specification still largely unlearned is a two-term project. Only a marked script distinguishes between them, which is why we ask for one before quoting any number.

What does an IGCSE maths tutor cost per hour in Dubai?+

The published range runs from roughly AED 33 to 65 at the homework-help end, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table puts a specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above, and BartyED's examiner-led rate is AED 650. In maths specifically, the step from the bottom band to the middle buys somebody who has marked papers and can diagnose a script, which is a different skill from being able to solve the questions.

Is one longer session a week better than two short ones for maths?+

For fluency work, two short sessions beat one long one, because manipulation and arithmetic accuracy are built by frequent repetition rather than by extended exposure. For past-paper work the opposite holds: a full Extended or Higher paper plus marking does not fit inside sixty minutes, so a ninety-minute weekend slot is the sensible shape. Most plans on this belt end up mixed: one short weekday session on technique, and a longer weekend slot every fortnight for a timed paper and its marking.

Can maths be taught properly over video when the working has to be shown?+

Yes, and in this subject it has a specific advantage. Lessons run with a shared writing surface, so both sides are working on the same visible page and the tutor can annotate exactly where a method mark was available and not taken. The student keeps that annotated file afterwards, which means the correction survives the lesson rather than disappearing with the paper it was written on. For a subject where the whole argument is about what lands on the page, a shared and saved page is more useful than a kitchen table.

Does a tutor need a permit to teach maths privately in Dubai?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, with no fee and a two-working-day completion time listed on MoHRE's own service page. Teachers, public and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18 may apply. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Ask to see it in the tutor's own name, and ask separately whether they teach at your child's school, which the code of conduct prohibits.

Our slot is 19:30 on a Tuesday. Is maths usually available then?+

Later evening slots are generally the easiest to fill, because nobody has to drive to them, so 19:30 is a better request than 16:30 even though it feels like the harder one. Mathematics is the most requested subject on this belt and the earlier weekday slots go first, particularly between November and March. If the exact hour is not available we say so and offer a different evening or a short wait rather than putting a generalist in the slot. No competitor page researched for this project discloses a coverage limit at all.

Send the code, the tier and a marked script

Mathematics is the subject where the fastest gains come from knowing the paper rather than from learning more content. If your child is sitting 0580 or 4MA1, ask the exams officer for the syllabus code, the tier, the paper numbers and the calculator position for their series, then send those with the last marked script and the evening that genuinely exists once the bus has reached Arabian Ranches. The first session can then start on the real problem: which marks were available and not taken, and whether the cause is a habit or a gap. The trial lesson is free on a stated condition: one session, before any payment, with written feedback afterwards.
