IGCSE Science Tutor in Arabian Ranches

Hiring an IGCSE science tutor in Arabian Ranches starts with a question most parents cannot answer from the school report: which syllabus code is your child entered for, and at which tier. Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625 behave differently from Co-ordinated Sciences 0654, and both behave differently from Pearson Edexcel 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and the Double Award 4SD0. The code decides the papers, the grade ceiling and the useful past papers. This page works through all of it, then teaches to it live online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Core and Extended tiers handled separately, with the grade ceiling explained

IB & IGCSE in Arabian Ranches

The syllabus code decides everything, and almost nobody checks it

A parent in Arabian Ranches who asks for an IGCSE science tutor usually describes the problem as science. The school describes it as biology, chemistry and physics. The examination board describes it as 0610, 0620 and 0625, or as 0654, or as 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, or as 4SD0. Those are not labels for the same thing. They differ in how many papers are sat, how many grades are awarded, whether a tier caps the grade, and whether there is a practical examination at all. A tutor who does not know the code is guessing at half the work.

The difference is large enough to change a revision plan completely. A Cambridge candidate on the separate sciences sits a multiple-choice paper worth 30 per cent of the subject, a theory paper worth 50 per cent, and either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper worth the remaining 20 per cent, and does that three times for three grades. A Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences candidate covers all three sciences at reduced depth for a double award. A Pearson Edexcel candidate sits two untiered written papers per science with experimental skills examined inside them and no separate practical paper.

Tiering adds a second layer. Cambridge splits most science syllabuses into Core and Extended. Core candidates sit Paper 1 and Paper 3; Extended candidates sit Paper 2 and Paper 4. The content overlaps substantially but not entirely, and the grade available to a Core candidate is capped. A student working through Extended past papers while entered for Core is wasting time on material that will not appear, and a student entered for Core who could manage Extended is capped for no good reason. Both happen, and both are visible in a single conversation with the school examinations officer.

Arabian Ranches sits inside a dense cluster of British-curriculum schools. JESS Arabian Ranches runs the English National Curriculum through IGCSE inside the community, with Ranches Primary School covering the early years in Arabian Ranches 2. Jebel Ali School in DAMAC Hills, GEMS Metropole School in Motor City, GEMS FirstPoint School in The Villa, South View School towards Remraam and The Aquila School in Dubailand all run science to 16. KHDA inspects every one of them annually and publishes the report. Dubai's private sector held 387,441 pupils across 227 schools in 2024-25, with the British curriculum the largest by enrolment at around 37 per cent.

IB Gram teaches IGCSE science live over video, one-to-one, with the session timed to Gulf Standard Time and the paper on screen. We do not send a tutor to a villa in Arabian Ranches or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India, and that is stated on every country page on this site. For science the online format carries a specific advantage: the past paper, the mark scheme and the student's own script can all be on the same screen while the marks are counted out loud.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

IGCSE science sits in the middle of a British-curriculum school career, with something before it and a choice after it. The four stages below describe what each one actually demands, because the stage a student is at changes what a tutor should be doing.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE sciences, Years 10 and 11

Two years of teaching leading to terminal written examinations in the May/June or the November series. Cambridge separate sciences award one grade each from three papers; Co-ordinated Sciences awards a double award; Pearson Edexcel awards one grade per science from two untiered papers, or two grades from the Double Award route. Entries are made by the school months before the first paper.

Every British-curriculum school around Arabian Ranches runs this stage, and they do not all use the same board. JESS Arabian Ranches, Jebel Ali School in DAMAC Hills and GEMS Metropole School in Motor City each make their own syllabus choices, which is why a Ranches parent should ask for the code rather than assume it from the subject name.

LSAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Lower Secondary and Checkpoint, Years 7 to 9

The three years before IGCSE, where science is taught as a single subject before it splits. Cambridge runs Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, which give a school an external reference point before the IGCSE course begins. The content gap that causes trouble later is usually mathematical rather than scientific.

Ranches families who act at this stage spend far less overall. A Year 9 student who can rearrange a formula, plot a graph with a sensible scale and handle units confidently will find IGCSE science a matter of content rather than of technique. Two or three sessions in Year 9 are worth more than ten in the spring of Year 11.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma after IGCSE

The Diploma route taken by JESS Arabian Ranches students and by those moving to Fairgreen International School, GEMS International School Al Khail or Emirates International School Meadows. Diploma sciences assess Paper 1 at 36 per cent, Paper 2 at 44 per cent and an individual scientific investigation at 20 per cent, with no option topics on the 2023 guides.

The step from IGCSE Extended into a Diploma science is manageable; the step from a double award is wider. A Ranches student on Cambridge 0654 or Edexcel 4SD0 who intends to take a science at Higher Level should plan a catch-up block during Year 11 rather than discovering the gap in DP1.

ALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level after IGCSE

The linear two-year route run by most British-curriculum schools in the Ranches belt, with practical endorsement rather than an assessed investigation. Content depth in the first year assumes Extended-tier IGCSE knowledge, particularly in quantitative chemistry and in mechanics.

Jebel Ali School in DAMAC Hills and GEMS Metropole School in Motor City take this route, so for many Ranches-belt families the A Level question arrives before the IB question does. A Core-tier IGCSE candidate who wants A Level science usually needs the Extended content taught in the summer between Year 11 and Year 12.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the actual science syllabuses a Ranches-belt student might be entered for, with the paper structure and the thing each one is most often misunderstood about. Ask the school examinations officer which of these codes appears on your child's entry.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610

Core and Extended

Multiple choice at 30 per cent, theory at 50 per cent, and practical or alternative-to-practical at 20 per cent. Extended-only material concentrates in transport in plants, homeostasis, genetics and inheritance. Biology marks are lost to vocabulary precision more than to reasoning: diffusion, osmosis and active transport must be distinguished in the exact terms the scheme uses.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core and Extended

The same 30, 50 and 20 split. Extended adds quantitative work including mole calculations, electrolysis products at each electrode, and rates in more depth. The characteristic Core-to-Extended jump is arithmetic: a student comfortable with qualitative chemistry can still be defeated by a two-step mole calculation under time pressure.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625

Core and Extended

Same structure again. Extended-only content sits in moments, momentum, electromagnetic induction and parts of thermal physics. Physics is the science where graph interpretation costs the most: students read the area when the question wants the gradient, and lose the mark without ever doubting the answer.

Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences 0654

Double award, Core and Extended

Biology, chemistry and physics taught together and reported as a double award rather than three grades. The content per science is thinner than the separate syllabuses, which matters for anyone intending a science at A Level or Higher Level. Papers follow the same multiple-choice, theory and practical pattern.

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653

Single award, Core and Extended

A single science grade covering all three disciplines at the lightest content load of the Cambridge routes. Appropriate where science is not going further, and a real obstacle where it is. A student on 0653 who later wants A Level chemistry is starting from considerably further back than a 0620 candidate.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1

Single tier

Two written papers, untiered, with no separate practical examination. Experimental skills are assessed inside the written questions, which means practical method and variable control still have to be taught properly even though there is no Paper 6 to point at. Grades 9 to 1 are available to every candidate.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1

Single tier

Two untiered written papers. The content map overlaps heavily with Cambridge 0620 but the question style differs: Edexcel leans towards longer structured calculation chains and Cambridge towards shorter discrete items. Past papers from the other board are useful for content and misleading for timing.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1

Single tier

Two untiered written papers, with the first carrying the larger share of the marks. No practical paper. The formula handling expectation is higher than it looks: students are asked to rearrange and substitute in the same question, and arithmetic slips cost more here than on a multiple-choice paper.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Double Award Science 4SD0

Double award

Biology, chemistry and physics papers at reduced content load, awarding two grades. Common in Dubai schools that want every student to carry science to 16 without filling the timetable with three separate subjects. The gap into a post-16 science is wider from here than from the separate syllabuses.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Not a science, and the most common hidden cause of science underperformance. Rearranging formulae, handling standard form, reading scales and plotting graphs are mathematics skills examined inside science papers. A science tutor who identifies a mathematics problem and says so is more useful than one who re-teaches the biology.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics

Extended only

Taken by a minority of Year 11 students and the best possible preparation for a post-16 physics or chemistry course. It introduces calculus early, which removes most of the difficulty from A Level mechanics and from Diploma kinematics before either course begins.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies

Mandatory alongside the curriculum

Required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum. These sit outside the IGCSE science question but they occupy timetable hours and homework time, and families planning a tuition schedule should count them. KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways IGCSE science support is usually bought, chosen by whether the problem is content, technique or a deadline. All lessons here run live over video; no visit is involved at any point.

One science at a time, weekly

A fixed weekly slot on the science causing the most trouble, taught to the exact syllabus code and tier. Working on one subject properly usually beats spreading the same hours across three, because the mathematics and technique gains transfer between the sciences anyway while content gains do not.

  • Taught to the code on the entry, not to a generic specification
  • Tier confirmed before the first session
  • Running error log carried between weeks
  • Same tutor each week, so the diagnosis accumulates

Paper technique clinics across all three sciences

A format that works when content is broadly secure and marks are leaking anyway. Command words, graph plotting, units, significant figures and extended-writing structure are common to biology, chemistry and physics, so one block of technique work pays into all three grades at once.

  • Command words taught as a set with worked examples
  • Graph marks: axes, scale, plotting, best-fit line
  • Six-mark answers structured against the scheme
  • Practical paper conventions drilled explicitly

Pre-series intensive before May/June or November

Two or three sessions a week across a defined block, built backwards from the school's mock timetable and then from the series itself. For science the most productive order is technique first, then the two weakest topics, then timed full papers under examination conditions.

  • Planned from the school's own entry and mock dates
  • Timed papers marked against the official scheme
  • Halfway review of what has moved
  • Ends when the block ends, with no rolling commitment

Year 9 and early Year 10 foundation work

The cheapest intervention available and the least often bought. Formula rearrangement, standard form, scale reading, graph plotting and unit discipline are the skills that decide whether IGCSE science feels like content or like a fight, and they can be made automatic before the course gets serious.

  • Mathematics-for-science skills made automatic
  • Practical write-up conventions introduced early
  • Checkpoint results used as a reference point
  • Short blocks rather than a standing weekly commitment

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Arabian Ranches

01

Which science route is your child actually on?

Before any teaching happens, establish three facts: the board, the syllabus code, and the tier. Those three facts determine which papers are sat, how many grades are awarded, what the maximum grade is, and which past papers are worth the time. They are all written on the school's examination entry, and the examinations officer will confirm them in a two-minute conversation. Guessing them from the subject name on a report card is the most common avoidable error in IGCSE tutoring.

The routes differ more than parents expect. Separate sciences give three grades and three times the content. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences gives a double award from a thinner syllabus. Cambridge Combined Science gives a single grade from the lightest load of all. Pearson Edexcel runs untiered single sciences with no practical paper, and a Double Award route that awards two grades. A student who moves between schools mid-course can end up on a different route from the one they started, which happens regularly in the Ranches belt.

The consequence sits further down the line. Post-16 science courses assume the content of the separate syllabuses. A student arriving at A Level chemistry from Cambridge 0653 Combined Science, or at Diploma biology from Edexcel 4SD0, has a real gap to close and usually does not know it until the first assessment comes back. That is a planning problem rather than an ability problem, and Year 11 is the cheap time to solve it.

The table lays out each route with the papers, the grades awarded and what it leads into. Find your child's row first; everything else on this page reads differently depending on which one it is. If the row cannot be identified with confidence, that itself is the first action: ask the school for the code before buying a single hour of tuition.

Core or Extended, and what the grade ceiling really means

Cambridge science syllabuses are tiered. Core candidates sit the Core multiple-choice paper and the Core theory paper; Extended candidates sit the Extended versions of both. Both tiers then sit the same practical or alternative-to-practical paper. The content is not simply harder on Extended; there is Extended-only material that a Core candidate will never be asked about, and there is a cap on the grade a Core candidate can be awarded.

That cap is the decision that matters, and it is made by the school, usually in Year 10, sometimes provisionally and sometimes not. A student placed on Core who could have managed Extended carries a ceiling into the examination for no reason. A student placed on Extended who is not ready can score less than they would have on Core, because the Extended papers leave less room for partially correct work. Both outcomes are reversible if the conversation happens early enough, and both become fixed once entries close.

For a Ranches family the practical steps are small. Ask which tier your child is provisionally entered for in each science, ask when that decision becomes final, and ask what the school would want to see in order to change it. Then work on exactly that. A tutor can be genuinely useful here, because the question is not whether the child is clever but whether the specific Extended-only topics are within reach in the time available.

Pearson Edexcel removes this problem by running untiered papers, with grades 9 to 1 available to every candidate. That is a real advantage for a student whose ability is uncertain in Year 10, and it is one reason some Dubai schools prefer the Edexcel route. It also means an Edexcel candidate has no Extended-only list to work through, so the revision question becomes depth across the whole specification rather than coverage of a tier.

Paper by paper: where the mark split sends your revision

Cambridge science splits the marks three ways: the multiple-choice paper carries 30 per cent of the subject, the theory paper carries 50 per cent, and the practical or alternative-to-practical paper carries the remaining 20 per cent. That distribution should shape revision and usually does not. Students spend most of their time on content, which serves the theory paper, and almost none on the practical paper, which is a fifth of every science grade and is the most pattern-driven component of the three.

The multiple-choice paper rewards elimination rather than recall. A student who reads all four options, discards two on a definite reason, and chooses between the remaining two, scores better than one who recognises the right answer and moves on without checking. That is a technique, not knowledge, and it transfers across all three sciences in a single session.

The theory paper is where command words decide the marks. State wants a short fact. Describe wants observable detail without cause. Explain wants cause. Suggest wants a reasoned answer to an unfamiliar situation. Compare wants both sides in the same sentence. Calculate wants working. Determine wants the method chosen as well as executed. A student who answers an explain question with a description loses every available mark while writing something entirely true.

The practical paper is the cheapest 20 per cent available. Its questions recur in recognisable shapes: identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables; state how to improve reliability; identify an anomalous result and say what to do about it; plot a graph with sensible axes and a best-fit line; describe a safety precaution relevant to this experiment rather than in general. These are learnable in a handful of sessions, which makes them the first place a short tutoring block should go.

The practical paper when the tutoring happens online

  • The school owns the laboratory, the equipment and the supervision
  • Alternative-to-practical questions follow a small set of recurring shapes
  • Variables, reliability, anomalies and safety taught as a checklist
  • Graph conventions drilled: axes, scale, plotting accuracy, best-fit line
  • Edexcel candidates still need the skill, examined inside the written papers

This is the question Ranches parents ask most often and the one with the clearest answer. The laboratory belongs to the school. Your child's practical lessons, the equipment, the supervision and, where the school enters it, the Paper 5 practical test all happen at JESS Arabian Ranches, Jebel Ali School, GEMS Metropole or wherever they are enrolled. Nothing about online tutoring changes that, and no tutoring provider should be offering to replace it.

Most schools in the UAE enter candidates for the alternative-to-practical paper rather than the practical test, because it is written rather than supervised in a laboratory. That paper is assessed on experimental reasoning expressed in writing, which is exactly the kind of work a video lesson handles well. The student reads a method, identifies the variables, spots the flaw, plots the results and writes the improvement, and the tutor marks each of those against the scheme while both are looking at the same page.

Where there is a practical test, the online session still helps with everything except the physical handling. Measurement technique, recording to the correct precision, tabulating before plotting, drawing a best-fit line rather than joining the dots, and identifying which result to discard are all discussed and practised on paper first. Students who do that arrive at the laboratory knowing what the examiner is looking for rather than discovering it while holding a burette.

Pearson Edexcel candidates have no separate practical paper at all, which sometimes leads a family to assume practical skills do not matter. They matter more, not less: the experimental questions are distributed through both written papers, where they arrive without warning in the middle of a content question. An Edexcel candidate who has never been drilled on variable control will meet it anyway, with fewer marks of warning.

05

The mark-scheme traps in IGCSE science

  • Command word matched to the answer structure, every time
  • Units written and prefixes converted before the answer is final
  • Rounding to the precision of the data, not to the calculator display
  • Graph marks earned mechanically: axes, scale, plotting, best-fit line
  • Six-mark answers planned as a list of points before being written

Five errors account for most preventable loss across all three sciences, and none of them is about not knowing the science. The first is answering the wrong command word, which was covered above and is worth repeating because it is the largest single cause. The second is units. An answer without a unit, or with the wrong unit after a correct calculation, loses the mark that the calculation earned. Standard form and prefix conversion between milli, centi, kilo and mega account for a surprising share of lost physics and chemistry marks.

The third is significant figures and rounding, where the expectation is an answer to the precision the data supports rather than the full calculator display. The fourth is graph marks, which are awarded mechanically: labelled axes with units, a scale that uses most of the grid, accurately plotted points, and a best-fit line that does not simply join the dots. Students lose two or three marks per graph for reasons that have nothing to do with the biology, chemistry or physics involved.

The fifth is extended writing. A six-mark question needs six distinct creditable points, written in a structure the examiner can follow, and most students write three good points at length instead. The fix is to plan in the margin: list the points first, then write. That single habit moves extended-writing marks more reliably than any amount of content revision, and it works identically in biology, chemistry and physics.

All five are diagnosed from a student's own marked script rather than from a conversation. That is why the most productive first session is usually a marking clinic: the student brings two papers with the marks on them, and the tutor classifies every loss as content, technique or presentation. Ranches families are frequently surprised by the result, because a report card that says science is a problem often turns out to mean mathematics and command words are the problem.

06

Past-paper method when there are three sciences to cover

  • Timed, closed-book sitting before any marking
  • Student marks their own script against the official scheme first
  • Every loss classified as content, technique or presentation
  • Papers matched to the actual board and tier on the entry
  • No papers, schemes or syllabus documents supplied by us

A Year 11 student with three sciences, mathematics, English and two more subjects cannot do everything, so the order matters. The method that works is narrow and repeatable. Sit one paper, timed and closed-book. Mark it against the published scheme without generosity. Classify each loss as content, technique or presentation. Then spend the next block on the largest category rather than on the most recent topic. Most students invert this, revising whatever the school taught last week.

Classification is the step that needs another pair of eyes. A loss that feels like not knowing the content is often a command-word error, and a loss that feels careless is often a genuine gap. Getting this wrong wastes weeks. A tutor who reads two marked scripts and names the pattern has already earned more than one who spends the same hour re-teaching photosynthesis to a student whose problem is graph plotting.

Match the papers to the tier and the board. Extended papers are not useful practice for a Core candidate, and Cambridge papers are not useful timing practice for an Edexcel candidate even where the content overlaps. Where a school has changed board mid-course, as happens in the Ranches belt when families move campus, the useful set is the board the entry is actually made under, not the one the student started with.

On the papers themselves, the boundary is worth stating. IB Gram does not host, copy or distribute syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade boundary tables. Those belong to Cambridge Assessment International Education and to Pearson, and the legitimate routes are the school, the official store and each board's own website. A tutoring provider offering a downloadable archive is giving away something it does not own, and the material in such archives is frequently from the wrong syllabus version.

07

Five subjects, grade E, and UAE Ministry of Education equivalency

For families who intend their child to apply to a UAE university, or to need an attested secondary certificate in the Emirates, the equivalency rule is worth knowing before Year 11 subject decisions are finalised. On the British track, students must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with either one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level with the same grade.

The detail that catches people out is the exclusion. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count. A student carrying five subjects of which two are Arabic and Islamic Education has not met the requirement, however good the grades. One ranking competitor page states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which does not match the published rule. The correct number is five, excluding those two.

Science counts towards the five, and this is where the route decision reappears. Three separate sciences contribute three of the five subjects. A double award contributes two. A single combined science grade contributes one. For a student taking a thin subject load, the science route can be the difference between meeting the requirement comfortably and meeting it with nothing to spare. That is a conversation for Year 10, not for the spring of Year 11.

IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency, and nothing on this page should be read as advice about a specific application. The process belongs to the Ministry of Education and to the emirate's attestation authority, and the requirement should be verified on moe.gov.ae before anything is relied upon. No IB Diploma points threshold is published here, because the figure has not been read on the Ministry's own pages and an unsourced number would be worse than none.

Cambridge and Pearson session dates, counted backwards

Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel runs International GCSE in May/June and November each year. Both publish official timetables, and both revise them, which is why a plan should be built from the school's own entry confirmation rather than from a figure on a tutoring page.

The Pearson Edexcel November 2026 International GCSE series makes the structural point better than any general statement. Written papers ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and results from the November 2025 sitting reached students on 22 January 2026, roughly nine weeks after the last paper. Entries for a November sitting close in the preceding summer and entries for the Cambridge June series close in the spring, in both cases several months before the first paper rather than weeks. The exact day sits on the statement of entry the school issues. A family deciding in September to change tier or add a subject for a November sitting has already missed the window.

Cambridge also allocates every examination centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after working from the wrong one. For a Ranches family that is one question to the school examinations officer, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. Pearson's November 2026 International GCSE timetable ran to 19 November 2026, with June 2026 results reaching centres on 19 August and students on 20 August 2026; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

The backwards plan below is the one a Year 11 student should be working to. It counts from the mock rather than from the series, because the mock is the deadline that changes behaviour, and because every school in the Ranches belt sets its own mock dates. Confirm every date with the school, and treat any date published on a tutoring site, including a provisional one, as a prompt to check rather than as a fact.

What IGCSE science tuition costs in the Ranches belt

Start at the cheapest end, because that is where most families start and where the most money is wasted. EdFlik advertises online sessions from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. At that price the tutor is usually a university student, and for checking homework or keeping a Year 9 student company through revision that can be perfectly adequate. For Extended-tier Year 11 work against a specific syllabus code it generally is not, and three months of it is more expensive than one month of something that works.

The next band up is where most IGCSE work sensibly sits. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 research puts qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300 an hour, and Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150. In monthly terms the same research estimates AED 600 to 1,200 for a weekly one-hour session at the mid-market level, against AED 240 to 600 at the budget end. An advertised online package of AED 799 a month for eight sessions sits inside that band.

Above it sit the specialist and premium tiers, which matter less for IGCSE than for the Diploma. Bestimate puts IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and BartyED's examiner-led tier reaches AED 650. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors, with monthly in-home packages at AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. Every one of those figures was published by the company or research service that charges it.

The useful conclusion for a Ranches family is that the decision is about fit rather than tier. A Year 11 Extended chemistry candidate needs someone who knows 0620 Paper 4 and can mark against its scheme; that person exists in the middle band. A Year 9 student needs mathematics-for-science discipline, which is cheaper. Buying the premium tier for a Core-tier candidate is an expensive way to solve a problem that is not there. For context, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that Dubai private school fees would not rise for 2026-27, so tuition is the part of the budget still changing.

Which science route each community around the Ranches tends to be on

Each note below describes a community by its science provision: which campus serves it, which board that campus tends to use, and what a tutor needs to know before the first session.

Arabian Ranches

JESS Arabian Ranches sits inside the community and carries students through IGCSE to the IB Diploma. Science enquiries from here are usually separate-sciences work in Year 10 and Year 11, with the tier question settled early because the Diploma is the likely destination.

Arabian Ranches 2

Ranches Primary School covers the early years inside the community; secondary students travel out. Enquiries here peak in Year 11, often after the first full mock, and the first useful step is nearly always confirming the syllabus code with the school.

Arabian Ranches 3

The newest phase, with no secondary campus of its own yet. Students commute to a mix of British and IB campuses, which means two neighbours on the same street can be sitting completely different science syllabuses in the same year group.

Mudon

Close to The Sustainable City and to Fairgreen International School, so a higher proportion of Mudon students are on an IB continuum and meet MYP sciences rather than IGCSE. Those who do sit IGCSE are usually at the British campuses towards Motor City.

Motor City

GEMS Metropole School runs the British curriculum to A Level. Motor City science enquiries are therefore heavily weighted towards Extended-tier work in Year 11, because the A Level entry expectation makes the tier decision consequential.

Dubai Sports City

Victory Heights Primary School serves the early years and secondary students travel out towards Al Barsha South and Dubai Hills Estate. Requests from here often involve a student who changed campus mid-course and therefore changed board mid-course.

DAMAC Hills

Jebel Ali School runs from Foundation Stage to Year 13 on the British curriculum with A Levels. Science work here is almost entirely separate-sciences Extended tier, and the practical paper technique matters because the school route continues into A Level practical endorsement.

Dubai Hills Estate

GEMS International School Al Khail brings a full IB continuum into the belt, so Dubai Hills students are more likely to be on MYP sciences than on IGCSE. Families transferring in from a British campus mid-course form a distinct group of enquiries.

Town Square

A large community further along Al Qudra Road with primary provision inside it. Science enquiries here tend to arrive late in Year 11, which narrows the options to paper technique and past-paper drilling rather than content rebuilding.

Remraam

South View School runs the British curriculum on this side of the belt. Remraam is the furthest of the comparison communities from the city's examination centres, which makes the zone and timetable check with the school examinations officer worth doing early.

British-curriculum campuses running IGCSE science near Arabian Ranches

These are the schools whose students make up most IGCSE science enquiries from the Ranches belt. Each chooses its own syllabus codes and its own tier policy, and both choices are worth asking about directly rather than inferring from a report card.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Arabian Ranches
  • Jebel Ali School, DAMAC Hills
  • GEMS Metropole School, Motor City
  • GEMS FirstPoint School, The Villa
  • South View School, Remraam
  • The Aquila School, Dubailand
  • Victory Heights Primary School, Dubai Sports City

IB campuses in the belt, for comparison

Students at these schools meet MYP sciences instead of IGCSE and move into Diploma sciences at 16. Named here so that a parent transferring between systems can see which side of the line their child's campus sits on.

  • Fairgreen International School, The Sustainable City
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • GEMS International School Al Khail, Dubai Hills Estate
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Safa Community School, Al Barsha South

Schools are listed as local context so parents can locate their own child's campus and board. No affiliation, endorsement, client relationship or partnership with any school or school group is implied, and current inspection bands should be read from the KHDA report rather than from this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the code and the tier from the school

Before anything else, ask the examinations officer for the board, the syllabus code and the tier for each science, and when the tier decision becomes final. Those four facts determine the papers, the ceiling and the useful past papers, and they take one email to establish. Everything a tutor does afterwards depends on them.

  2. 02

    Send two marked science papers

A diagnosis from marked work beats a description of the problem every time. Two scripts with the marks on them let a tutor classify the losses as content, technique or presentation, which decides what the first month is spent on. A report card grade on its own tells almost nothing actionable.

  3. 03

We match a tutor to the board and the tier

Matching is on the specific code and tier rather than on the subject name, because 0625 Extended and 4PH1 are different jobs. If nobody suitable is free in your preferred slot we say so and offer another time, rather than filling the gap with someone who will learn the specification alongside your child.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial lesson

One full session before any payment, run on a real problem from a real paper. The tutor reports what they found in the technique. If the match is wrong, say so and we try another tutor; nothing is owed either way, and no card details are needed to begin.

  5. 05

Fix a weekly slot and run an error log

The slot is set in Gulf Standard Time around the school run from your community, and from the first session the tutor keeps a log of error types. That log is what makes the sixth session more useful than the first, and what tells a family honestly when to stop.

  6. 06

    Review before the mock

A short written note before mock week on what has moved and what has not, with a recommendation on frequency for the final stretch. Families use it to step up, step down or finish. Finishing because the problem is solved is a legitimate outcome and we will say so when we think it has been reached.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught to the code, not to a generic specification

Cambridge 0620 Extended and Pearson 4CH1 overlap in content and differ in paper structure, timing and question style. Teaching to the wrong one wastes a term quietly. Every session here is planned from the syllabus code and tier on your child's actual entry.

The practical paper taken seriously

A fifth of every Cambridge science grade sits in the practical or alternative-to-practical paper, and it is the most pattern-driven component of the three. Variables, reliability, anomalies, safety and graph conventions are drilled explicitly rather than mentioned once.

Technique work that pays into three grades

Command words, units, significant figures, graph marks and extended-writing structure are identical across biology, chemistry and physics. One block of technique work moves marks in all three subjects, which is the best value available to a Year 11 student with a full timetable.

The equivalency rule stated correctly

Five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count. A competing page in this market publishes six. We publish the sourced figure and point parents to the Ministry's own pages to verify it.

AED figures attributed to whoever charges them

Every rate here names the company or research service that published it, cheapest first, with a note on what each tier is realistically good for. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this project publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars.

No supplied papers and no claimed accreditation

IB Gram does not host or distribute past papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents, and is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB. Both statements are deliberate and both can be checked.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Arabian Ranches: your questions answered

Does my child sit separate sciences or Co-ordinated Sciences at IGCSE?+

Only the school can tell you, and the answer is on the examination entry rather than the report card. Separate sciences produce three grades from three sets of papers. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 produces a double award from a thinner syllabus. Cambridge Combined Science 0653 produces a single grade. Pearson Edexcel runs separate sciences as 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 or a Double Award as 4SD0. Ask the examinations officer for the code; it decides the papers, the grades, the past papers worth using and the post-16 options.

What is the difference between Cambridge 0654 and three separate science syllabuses?+

Content depth and grades awarded. Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 covers biology, chemistry and physics together at reduced depth and reports a double award. The separate syllabuses, 0610, 0620 and 0625, each cover one science in full and each award their own grade. For a student going on to A Level or Diploma science the separate route is the stronger preparation; the double award leaves a real gap, particularly in quantitative chemistry and in the physics topics that post-16 courses assume as known.

Which IGCSE science papers does a Core candidate sit instead of Extended?+

On Cambridge science syllabuses a Core candidate sits the Core multiple-choice paper and the Core theory paper, while an Extended candidate sits the Extended versions of both. Both tiers sit the same practical or alternative-to-practical paper. The important consequence is the grade ceiling: the top grades are not available on Core. The second consequence is practice material, because Extended past papers contain questions a Core candidate will never be asked and are therefore a poor use of revision time.

How is IGCSE science practical work assessed if lessons happen online?+

The practical work itself stays at school, where the laboratory, the equipment and the supervision are. Most UAE schools enter candidates for the alternative-to-practical paper, which assesses experimental reasoning in writing, and that is well suited to a video lesson: the student reads a method, identifies the variables, spots the weakness, plots the results and writes the improvement while the tutor marks each step against the scheme. Where a school enters the practical test instead, everything except the physical handling can still be rehearsed on paper first.

What are the hardest Extended-only topics across the three IGCSE sciences?+

In biology, transport in plants, homeostasis and the genetics and inheritance material cause the most difficulty. In chemistry it is the quantitative work: mole calculations, electrolysis products at each electrode, and rates in greater depth. In physics it is moments, momentum and electromagnetic induction. The useful point for a family is that these form a finite, listable set rather than a general increase in difficulty, so a student moving from Core to Extended has a specific body of work to do rather than an open-ended one.

Should my child take Edexcel 4SD0 Double Award or Cambridge separate sciences?+

In practice the school decides, and the real question is what the choice costs later. Separate sciences give three grades and the strongest preparation for post-16 science. The Double Award gives two grades from a lighter load, which helps a crowded timetable and leaves a gap into A Level or Diploma science. For Ministry of Education equivalency the arithmetic matters too, since separate sciences contribute three of the five required subjects and a double award contributes two. Raise it in Year 10 while the timetable is still movable.

What does IGCSE science tuition cost per hour around Arabian Ranches?+

Published market figures, cheapest first: Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65; Bestimate's 2026 Dubai research puts qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors quoting IGCSE from AED 150; specialists reach AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 because the drive is inside the price. Those are other companies' rates, named and dated. IB Gram does not publish a rate card on this page.

How many IGCSE science subjects count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Each separate science grade counts as one of the five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects required on the British track, which must be achieved at no less than grade E or grade 3. A double award contributes two subjects and a single combined science grade contributes one. Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from the count of five. A competitor page in this market states that six subjects are required; the published rule says five. Verify it on moe.gov.ae before relying on it for an application.

When do Cambridge IGCSE science entries have to be submitted?+

Months before the examination, and the school makes the entry rather than the family. A UAE candidate sits the Cambridge June series or the November series, and for both the final entry deadline falls several months ahead of the first paper: entries for June close in the spring, entries for November in the preceding summer. Cambridge publishes the exact dates for each series and does revise them, so the figure that governs a family plan is the one printed on the school statement of entry rather than any date quoted on a tutoring page. If a tier change or an added subject is under discussion it has to happen before that deadline, so ask the school examinations officer for the internal cut-off date, which usually sits a week or two earlier again.

Can one tutor cover biology, chemistry and physics for the same IGCSE student?+

For technique work, yes, and it is often the most efficient arrangement. Command words, units, significant figures, graph conventions and extended-writing structure are identical across the three sciences, so one block of that work moves all three grades. For content, a specialist in the weakest subject is usually better value than a generalist across all three, particularly at Extended tier where the examiner expects depth. Many Ranches families run a technique block first and then a subject specialist for whichever science is still lagging.

Why does my child score well in class tests but badly on past papers?+

Class tests usually cover the topic just taught, in the style the teacher used, with generous marking. A past paper mixes topics, uses the board's own command words and is marked against the published scheme. Students who rely on recent recall rather than retained understanding are exposed by the first format change. The other common cause is timing: a paper that is comfortable untimed becomes a different task under the clock. Both are fixable, and both are diagnosed from the marked script rather than from the score.

What is the alternative to practical paper and how is it marked?+

It is the written alternative to the laboratory practical test, carrying 20 per cent of a Cambridge science grade, and it assesses experimental skill through questions about method rather than through handling apparatus. The marks follow recurring shapes: identify independent, dependent and controlled variables; explain how to improve reliability; identify an anomalous result and say what to do with it; plot a graph with labelled axes, a sensible scale and a best-fit line; state a safety precaution specific to this experiment. All of it is learnable in a handful of sessions.

How early in Year 10 should IGCSE science support begin?+

Earlier than most families start, and the reason is the tier decision rather than the content. Cambridge tier placements are usually discussed in Year 10, and a student who wants Extended needs to demonstrate it before entries close. The second reason is mathematics: rearranging formulae, standard form, scale reading and graph plotting are examined inside science papers, and making them automatic in Year 10 is far cheaper than repairing them in the spring of Year 11, when there is no spare time left.

Do IGCSE science grades matter for IB Diploma subject choices at Dubai schools?+

Yes, in two ways. Schools commonly set an entry expectation for a science at Higher Level, often expressed as a minimum IGCSE grade, and that expectation is the school's rather than the IB's, so it varies between JESS Arabian Ranches, Fairgreen International School and GEMS International School Al Khail. The second way is readiness: a student entering Diploma chemistry from the Extended separate syllabus starts in a different place from one arriving from a double award. Ask each school for its own published requirement.

Is a Ranches student at a disadvantage sitting IGCSE science in the November series?+

Not academically. Cambridge runs June and November series, and Pearson Edexcel runs May/June and November, so a November entry is a normal route rather than a resit badge. What changes is the calendar: the teaching year is shorter before a November sitting, results arrive at a different point relative to post-16 applications, and the mock timetable has to be rebuilt. Confirm the series on the school entry, then plan backwards from it. Cambridge also allocates centres to administrative zones, so check the school is using the correct zone timetable.
