Edexcel IGCSE Biology 4BI1 Home Tutor in Dubai

Hiring an Edexcel IGCSE Biology 4BI1 home tutor in Dubai is easy. Telling whether it is working is the hard part, and most families cannot, because what they receive is a weekly reassurance rather than a record. This page sets out the evidence a parent is entitled to ask for: a baseline paper, marked answers with the scheme's required points identified, a tracked count of lost marks by cause, and a written note after every session. Lessons run one to one over live video.

  • A baseline paper marked and recorded before any teaching begins
  • Long answers returned with the scheme's required points identified
  • Lost marks counted by cause and tracked week to week

How a Dubai parent can tell whether biology tutoring is working

Three months into a tutoring arrangement, most parents in this market can report two things: the tutor is nice, and the child says it is helping. Neither is evidence. Both are compatible with a student who has enjoyed twelve pleasant hours and will sit the same paper they would have sat anyway. The gap is not usually dishonesty. It is that nobody recorded a starting point, so there is nothing for the present state to be compared against.

Biology makes this worse than the other sciences, for a specific reason. In chemistry a mole calculation is either right or wrong, and a parent can see the change in a fortnight. In physics a unit conversion either happens or it does not. Biology's marks sit largely in extended prose and in data interpretation, where an answer can look fluent and score three out of six, and where improvement is invisible to anyone who has not read the mark scheme. A student can write better biology for two months with no visible change in a report.

So the proposition on this page is narrow. Before any teaching happens, the student sits a baseline: a past paper section under timed conditions, marked against the real scheme, with every lost mark categorised. Those categories become the record. Coverage gaps, answer structure, data method, diagram labelling, terminology, and marks lost to not answering the question asked. The count in each category is written down, and it is the thing that either moves or does not over the following weeks.

What follows that is a sequence of artefacts rather than a sequence of reassurances. A marked long answer with the scheme's required points identified against what the student actually wrote. A redraft of the same answer. A short written note after each session naming the specification point worked on and the marks at stake. An unseen re-test a fortnight after a category is addressed. A re-scored baseline at the end of the term. A parent can read all of that in ten minutes a week without knowing any biology, and each of those documents is capable of disappointing, which is precisely what makes them worth having rather than decorative.

On delivery, plainly: parents search for a home tutor because the child is at home in Dubai and the need feels local, and the phrase deserves an honest answer. IB Gram does not arrange home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Biology lessons run one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For an evidence-led arrangement that is not a concession but an advantage: screen work is captured by default, so the marked answer, the redraft and the written note all exist as documents a parent can actually read.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Evidence looks different at each stage of a British-curriculum route in Dubai, because the assessments a school produces change. These four stages are where a parent can actually get a reading on biology.

YEAR 10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Where the evidence trail should start

The first year in which a student writes 4BI1-style extended answers and the best year to establish a baseline, because there is time for the record to show movement. A Year 10 baseline also separates two things that look identical later: a student who has not yet been taught a section, and one who was taught it and did not retain it. By Year 11 that distinction has blurred.

Dubai schools differ in how much they annotate Year 10 work. Some return per-question marks and a breakdown; others return a grade and a comment. Ask the biology teacher which you will receive, because it determines whether a family needs an external baseline at all. Where the school already provides per-question data, use it rather than duplicating it.

4BI1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology

Paper 1B of two hours for 110 marks and Paper 2B of one hour fifteen minutes for 70 marks, 180 marks in total, untiered, reported 9 to 1, with no coursework and no separate practical examination. Because there is no coursework, every piece of evidence about a 4BI1 student is written examination-style work, which makes the record cleaner than in qualifications with an internal component.

Confirm the code on the exam entry statement rather than assuming. Dubai schools often enter Pearson for one science and Cambridge for another, and the two biology specifications differ in structure and in practical arrangements. Tracking a student against the wrong scheme produces a record that looks rigorous and measures the wrong thing.

MOCKSYears 10 and 11

The school assessment calendar as evidence

School mocks are the most useful external check on a tutoring arrangement, because nobody involved in the tutoring sets or marks them. A tutoring record that predicts a mock result reasonably well is a record worth trusting. One that shows steady improvement while mocks stay flat is measuring the wrong thing, and that discrepancy is itself the most valuable piece of information a parent gets.

Ask the school for its assessment calendar at the start of the year and plan tutoring blocks to finish two weeks before each mock, not during it. Dubai schools commonly run mocks in November and February for Year 11, which means a block started in September has a genuine external checkpoint before the winter break.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

What the record is for after 16

A 4BI1 grade is a gate for students heading into International A Level Biology, IB Diploma Biology, or medicine, dentistry and biomedical applications. A documented record of what a student found difficult at sixteen is also useful at seventeen, because the same pattern usually recurs under a heavier load: students who lost extended-answer marks in 4BI1 lose them again in A Level essays unless the habit was addressed.

Dubai had 387,441 private-school students across 227 schools in 2024-25, with 37% on a UK curriculum and 7% in the International Baccalaureate, so the post-16 choice is live for most 4BI1 candidates. No tutoring provider should suggest that tutoring is required for university admission or for Ministry of Education equivalency, because neither is true.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The ten items below are the artefacts a 4BI1 student produces that can actually be assessed. Each one is a piece of written work with a scheme behind it, which is why each can be tracked rather than merely discussed.

Osmosis investigation write-up

Section 2 · practical evidence

The potato or visking tubing experiment, written up with variables, method, results and conclusion. Shows whether the student can name a concentration gradient and a partially permeable membrane, and whether percentage change was calculated rather than raw mass compared. A single write-up diagnoses three separate skills.

Enzyme rate graph question

Section 2 · data evidence

Temperature or pH against rate of reaction. Reveals whether the student reads an optimum off a curve, explains denaturation in terms of the active site, and distinguishes a plateau from a maximum. Graph questions are the fastest reliable indicator of data method in this subject.

Six-mark gas exchange or digestion answer

Section 2 · extended prose

The heaviest category of lost marks on most 4BI1 scripts. A marked copy shows how many of the scheme's required points appeared in a fluent answer, which is usually fewer than the student expected. The single most informative artefact a parent can ask to see.

Negative feedback explanation

Section 2 · extended prose

Temperature regulation or blood glucose control. Distinguishes a student who describes what happens from one who explains why, which is the difference between half marks and full marks on this question type. Marked copies make the distinction obvious even to a non-biologist.

Genetic diagram with ratio stated

Section 3 · structured answer

Monohybrid crosses with parental genotypes, gametes, offspring genotypes and the phenotype ratio. There is a required layout and marks are routinely lost on the gamete row or on omitting the ratio the question asked for. A clean, binary piece of evidence: either the layout is right or it is not.

Food web, pyramid and energy transfer question

Section 4 · applied reasoning

Reading a web, constructing a pyramid of number or biomass, and explaining energy loss between trophic levels. Shows whether the student applies a principle to unfamiliar organisms or recites a learnt chain, which is exactly what Pearson suggest-stems test.

Carbon or nitrogen cycle diagram

Section 4 · recall with process naming

Marks depend on naming the process at each arrow rather than describing the cycle in general. A completed diagram is quick to check and tells a parent whether the student has learnt the cycle as a picture or as a sequence of named processes, which is the distinction the scheme cares about.

Transpiration or photosynthesis data table

Sections 2 and 4 · calculation evidence

Rate calculations, percentage change and unit handling from a table of readings. Shows whether the student states a unit, chooses the right pair of readings, and spots an anomaly. Two or three of these establish data method more reliably than any amount of discussion.

Selective breeding and genetic modification comparison

Section 5 · recall and evaluation

Taught last in most Dubai schemes of work and revised least, so a blank answer here is usually coverage rather than ability. Useful early as a coverage check: if Section 5 is empty in October of Year 11, the plan needs a coverage block, not answer-structure work.

Diagram labelling test, cold

Across all five sections · recall evidence

Heart, kidney nephron, leaf cross-section, flower, digestive system, neurone. Scored out of a fixed total and repeatable, which makes it the cheapest piece of trackable evidence in the subject. A ten-minute cold test every fortnight produces a line on a graph that a parent can read at a glance.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

All three formats below are delivered one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and all three produce the same documentary record. They differ in how much of it a family needs.

Baseline and report, as a one-off

Two sessions: a timed past-paper section sat under conditions, then a session going through it with the student. The output is a written record of lost marks by category and a recommended priority. Families frequently buy only this and act on it themselves, which is a legitimate and useful outcome.

  • One timed paper section, sat properly rather than discussed
  • Marked against the real scheme, every lost mark categorised
  • Written record of the counts in each category
  • No commitment beyond the two sessions

Tracked weekly hour

One hour a week with the category counts carried forward week to week, an unseen re-test a fortnight after each category is addressed, and a re-scored baseline at the end of the term. The format where the record does the work: progress is either visible in the counts or it is not happening.

  • Category counts updated after each assessment
  • Written note after every session, one page
  • Unseen re-test two weeks after a category is addressed
  • Term-end baseline re-score, compared against the first

Extended-answer clinic

Four to six sessions on six-mark answers alone: the scheme's required points identified against what the student wrote, then a redraft, then an unseen answer of the same type. The one category in 4BI1 that cannot be shared, and the one that moves most measurably once it is tracked.

  • One answer type per session, with a redraft
  • Scheme points listed beside the student's own sentences
  • Marks-out-of-six recorded for every attempt
  • Progress shown as a score series, not as a comment

01

The evidence a parent is entitled to ask for

Most tutoring in this market produces no durable record, and nobody is hiding anything: the hour is spent teaching, a verbal summary happens at the end, and the family's only artefact is a memory. That is fine when the subject improves visibly and useless when it does not. The remedy is to agree, before the first paid hour, which documents the arrangement will produce and how often, and then to read them.

The list is short and none of it requires a parent to understand biology. A baseline score with lost marks counted by category. A marked long answer showing the scheme's required points beside what the student wrote. A one-page note after each session naming the specification point and the marks at stake. An unseen re-test score, dated at least a fortnight after the work it tests. A re-scored baseline at the end of the term. Five artefacts, each of which can be checked in minutes.

What makes these useful rather than decorative is that each can disappoint. A re-test score that has not moved is information. A note that says the same thing three weeks running is information. A category count that is flat while the tutor reports progress is the single most valuable thing a parent can discover, and it is discoverable only if the count exists. A provider who objects to producing these is telling you something; a provider who produces them without being asked is unusual in this market.

Twelve weeks of 4BI1 work, and what each week should leave behind

A term of biology tutoring can be described in advance, which is itself a useful test of a provider. The sequence below is what a tracked weekly hour produces across twelve weeks, with the artefact each week generates in the right-hand column. It is not a syllabus plan, because the content depends on the baseline; it is a plan for the record, and the record is what tells a family whether the content plan was right.

Two features of the sequence are deliberate and worth explaining. Re-tests are set a fortnight after the work they test, never at the end of the same session, because a test sat immediately measures short-term memory and produces a flattering number. And the baseline is re-scored at week twelve using a comparable paper section rather than the same one, so the comparison is of ability rather than of familiarity.

The sequence also has a built-in decision point at week six. If the largest category has not moved by then, the diagnosis was probably wrong, and the honest response is to re-diagnose rather than to continue with more of the same. Families rarely get that conversation offered, because continuing is easier to sell than admitting a wrong call. A record that makes a wrong call visible at week six is worth considerably more than one that makes it visible in June. The twelve weeks also end with a coverage check rather than more teaching, because by that point the most useful question is often which parts of the specification the school has not yet reached, and that list belongs to the family's planning rather than to any single session.

Reading a Pearson biology mark scheme without being a biologist

A published mark scheme is the most useful document in this process and the one families never open. It is written in a compressed notation that looks forbidding and is actually simple, and once a parent can read it they can check a marked answer themselves rather than relying on an interpretation. It also explains why a fluent six-mark answer scored three, which is the question most families are really asking.

The conventions to know are few. A scheme may offer more acceptable points than there are marks, capped by a maximum, so an answer containing four valid points on a three-mark question earns three. Alternative wordings are usually indicated as acceptable, and an instruction to ignore a particular statement means it neither gains nor loses credit. The reverse form of an argument is commonly allowed where the biology is equivalent. An error carried forward convention means a wrong value used correctly afterwards can still earn the later marks.

Reference the official document rather than relying on any provider's copy. Pearson owns its mark schemes and past papers, and a tutor should name the series and the paper and point you to the official source rather than distributing scans. Where a school has already issued a paper to its own cohort, working from that is ordinary teaching. The table gives the conventions in plain language; check the notation page of the actual scheme for your child's series, because the published document always states its own conventions.

04

The baseline paper, and why it is sat rather than discussed

  • Session one is timed and marked, with no teaching in it
  • The same six categories every time, so counts are comparable
  • Student self-report is collected but not used as the diagnosis
  • Comparable paper section at term end, not the identical one
  • The counts, not a grade, are what gets tracked

The first session in an evidence-led arrangement contains no teaching. The student sits a past-paper section under timed conditions, with the clock visible, and then it is marked properly against the scheme. Families sometimes resist this, reasonably: it feels like paying for an hour in which nothing was taught. What it buys is the only fixed point in the whole arrangement, and without it every later claim about progress is unfalsifiable.

Sitting it matters more than discussing it. A conversation about what a student finds difficult produces the topics they are aware of finding difficult, which is a different and much shorter list. Students are consistently wrong about this in biology: they report struggling with genetics, where the layout is learnable in two sessions, and report being fine with gas exchange, where a fluent answer is quietly scoring half marks. Only a marked script separates perceived difficulty from actual lost marks.

The categories used are the same every time, which is what makes the record comparable. Coverage, meaning the section has not been taught or retained. Structure, meaning extended answers do not contain separable points. Data method, meaning rates, percentages, units and anomalies. Diagram and terminology recall. Question reading, meaning the student answered a different question from the one printed. Each gets a count out of the marks available, and those six numbers are the baseline that week twelve is compared against. Keeping the categories fixed is what makes the exercise worth repeating: a new set of labels every term would produce six fresh numbers and no comparison at all, which is how most tutoring records quietly become unusable by the spring.

05

What counts as progress in biology, and what only looks like it

  • Progress: the same answer type scoring higher two weeks later, unseen
  • Progress: a cold recall score that is still higher a month afterwards
  • Progress: fewer sections on the coverage gap list
  • Not progress: topics covered, papers attempted, confidence reported
  • Not progress: anything tested in the session it was taught in

Several things feel like progress in this subject and are not. Finishing a topic is not progress; it is coverage, and a student can cover all five sections and score the same because their answers still do not contain separable points. Doing more past papers is not progress unless the papers are marked properly and the pattern across them is read. Feeling more confident is not progress, and it is the signal families rely on most, because it is the only one available without a record.

The things that are progress are narrow and checkable. A six-mark answer that scores five where comparable answers scored three. A cold diagram test score that rises and stays risen a month later. A data question answered with a unit and a correct pair of readings, twice in a row, two weeks apart. A coverage list with fewer gaps on it than last month. A mock result that moves in the same direction as the tutoring record, which is the external confirmation nobody in the arrangement controls.

The most useful discipline is to require a gap. Anything tested in the session it was taught in tells you nothing, and most reported tutoring progress is of exactly that kind. A fortnight is the minimum useful interval, a month is better, and a repair that survives both is real. That single rule removes most of the overstatement from tutoring reports, and it is the one a parent can enforce without knowing any biology at all.

06

Grade movement, boundaries and why no number can be promised

Parents reasonably want the record expressed as a grade, and that is where honesty has to intervene. A raw mark out of 180 becomes a grade through boundaries set after the series has been sat and marked, and those boundaries move between series. A tutoring record can therefore report marks reliably and grades only loosely. Anyone converting a practice score into a confident grade prediction is adding precision that does not exist.

What the record can say is directional and still useful. Lost marks in the structure category fell from eighteen to six across a term. Cold diagram scores rose and held. The coverage gap list went from three sections to one. A parent reading that knows what changed and roughly what it is worth, without being told a number that the examination will decide. No tutor can promise a particular grade, and a provider offering one should be asked to publish the refund terms on the same page.

Do not accept published grade-boundary tables from a tutoring provider either. Boundaries belong to the examination board, they are released through official channels, and reproducing them is both a copyright matter and a route to quoting a figure from the wrong series. Reference the official source, use the practice marks for direction, and keep the conversation about marks and categories rather than about a predicted grade that nobody is in a position to issue. The school is the right place for a predicted grade, because it holds the full assessment history and issues the prediction formally. A tutoring record is an input to that judgement and not a substitute for it, and a provider who presents it as one has misunderstood what the document is for.

07

Home tutor or online: which arrangement leaves a record

This is where the delivery question becomes a practical one rather than a preference. IB Gram does not arrange home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; biology lessons run one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are a service offered only in India. The in-home market in the emirate is real, published at AED 180 to 350 an hour in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table and advertised to AED 500 by individual home tutors, with travel inside the figure.

On evidence specifically, the two formats are not equivalent. Screen work is captured by default: the marked answer, the list of scheme points, the redraft and the written note all exist as files when the hour ends. In a living room, the same work happens in the student's exercise book and in conversation, and what reaches a parent is a summary delivered at the door. Neither tutor is being evasive; one format produces documents and the other does not.

There is one genuine advantage on the other side and it should be stated. A person in the room is harder to ignore than a person on a screen, and for a younger student or one who will not begin work unsupervised, that matters more than any record. A family in that position is better served by an in-home arrangement with a deliberately imposed record: a marked answer photographed each week, a written note required, and a cold test score logged. The structure is what matters; the format just makes it easier or harder.

08

Evidence about the tutor, not just about the student

The same standard applies in the other direction. A family is entitled to evidence about the person teaching, and in this market most of what is offered instead is an adjective. The checks below cost nothing and take about fifteen minutes in total, and they separate a 4BI1 specialist from a general science tutor more reliably than any credential list.

The most informative is the ten-minute test. Send one six-mark biology answer your child has already written and ask the tutor to identify which of the scheme's required points are present and which are missing. Someone who teaches this specification will do it quickly and specifically. Someone who does not will comment on the writing. No qualification claim predicts the answer to that question as well as the answer itself does.

On regulatory status, the position should be stated rather than implied. Private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so ignore quoted amounts. IB Gram holds no approval, licence or endorsement from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Pearson or Cambridge, and claims none. One further check is worth making in Abu Dhabi and worth understanding in Dubai: ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit carries its own code of conduct, so an offer of your child's own class teacher privately is a reason to ask more questions rather than fewer.

09

Evidence that the work is the student's own

An evidence trail cuts both ways, and the last thing it has to establish is authorship. 4BI1 has no coursework and no internal assessment, which removes the commonest route to trouble in international qualifications, and the principle still has to hold for everything else: a tutor teaches, questions, marks and gives feedback on work the student has written. Redrafting an answer with a student is teaching. Writing the answer for them is not, and the record should make the difference visible.

In practice that means the student's own version is kept alongside the redraft rather than replaced by it. A marked answer with the original visible, the scheme's points listed, and a second attempt written by the student is a document that demonstrates learning. A single polished answer in the tutor's phrasing demonstrates nothing and teaches the student that a good answer is something that arrives from outside. The first costs a few extra minutes and is worth considerably more in April.

This market contains providers who go further than ghostwriting a sentence. One operator sells completed Internal Assessments for other qualifications at AED 3,750, which is an academic-integrity breach that the student carries and the seller does not. Any arrangement a family enters should be describable to the school without embarrassment, and the record is the test of that: if the artefacts are the student's own work with feedback on it, the arrangement is sound. The same reasoning applies to anything a student submits internally in Dubai, from a practical write-up to a mock sat in school conditions: the usable evidence is a document the student produced, annotated by somebody who knows what the scheme rewards, and kept so that the next version can be compared against it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Lessons run over video, so these notes are not about tutor availability. They record what each part of Dubai reports about getting marked work back from school, which determines how much external evidence a family needs to generate.

Jumeirah Park and Al Furjan

Mid-sized British-curriculum cohorts where families generally receive a grade and a short comment on biology assessments. An external baseline is worth having here, because the school record alone will not show which category of marks is being lost.

Dubai Sports City and Victory Heights

Households often running two or three subjects at once, where the parent's time is the constraint rather than the budget. A one-page written note after each session is what gets read; anything longer does not, which is worth saying to a provider in advance.

Tilal Al Ghaf and Dubai Hills Estate

Newer communities with cohorts assembled from several previous curricula, so a Year 10 baseline separates genuine coverage gaps from retention problems. That distinction is harder to recover a year later and cheaper to establish now.

Al Barsha 1 and Al Barsha 2

Dense schooling with large biology classes, which usually means long answers are graded rather than annotated. This is where a marked six-mark answer with the scheme's points identified produces the biggest single realisation for a student.

Downtown Dubai and DIFC

Working households where no adult is in the room during a session. Written evidence carries the whole weight here, so the note after each session and the saved marked work matter more than they would elsewhere in the emirate.

Oud Metha and Al Karama

Established central districts with a mix of school types and a high proportion of students taking three separate sciences. Fortnightly cold diagram tests work well here as a cheap, repeatable measure alongside heavier written work.

Al Mamzar and Hor Al Anz

Northern districts where several families share tutors by recommendation. Comparing records between two students in the same teaching set is unusually easy here, and it is a good sanity check on whether a tutoring arrangement is actually tracking anything.

Dubai Creek Harbour and Al Jaddaf

Newer apartment communities with growing Year 10 and Year 11 numbers. The practical constraint is a quiet space at a predictable hour, which matters for timed baseline work more than for ordinary teaching.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Schools that return per-question marks

Where the school already publishes a breakdown by question, a family does not need to duplicate it and should use it instead. Students we support from this cluster usually need the school's own data interpreted rather than a second set generated.

  • Dubai College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Kent College Dubai
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Schools where long answers come back graded, not annotated

Large classes make per-answer annotation impractical, so a student can repeat the same extended-prose weakness for a whole term unnoticed. This is the cluster where generating an external baseline changes the most.

  • GEMS Metropole School
  • Regent International School
  • Sunmarke School
  • The Winchester School Dubai
  • GEMS Founders School Al Mizhar
  • Star International School Mirdif

Schools appear here only as context for how marked work reaches Dubai families. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any school named, and none is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Agree the artefacts before the first paid hour

Name the five documents the arrangement will produce and how often: baseline with category counts, marked long answers, a one-page note after each session, dated re-test scores, and a term-end re-score. A provider who agrees to that in writing has changed the nature of the arrangement before it starts.

  2. 02

Sit the baseline, do not discuss it

Session one is a timed past-paper section with no teaching in it, marked properly afterwards. It feels like a wasted hour and it is the only fixed point the arrangement will have. Student self-report is collected but not used as the diagnosis, because students are reliably wrong about which biology questions are costing them marks.

  3. 03

Work the largest category and require a gap

Three to five sessions on the biggest count, then unseen questions of the same type a fortnight later. Nothing is re-tested in the session it was taught in. That single rule removes most of the overstatement from tutoring reports and is enforceable by a parent with no knowledge of biology.

  4. 04

Use week six as a decision point

If the largest category has not moved by then, the diagnosis was probably wrong and the honest step is to re-diagnose rather than continue. Continuing is easier to sell, which is why this conversation is rarely offered. A record that exposes a wrong call at week six is worth more than one that exposes it in June.

  5. 05

Check the record against the school's mock

The mock is the external test nobody in the arrangement sets or marks. A tutoring record that roughly predicts it is trustworthy. A record showing steady gains alongside a flat mock is measuring the wrong thing, and that discrepancy is the most valuable single piece of information a family will get all year.

  6. 06

Hand over cleanly if the tutor changes

Another 4BI1 specialist should pick up the same baseline, the same category counts and the same priority order, with nothing re-assessed and nothing re-charged. Confirm it in writing beforehand, because a provider who restarts the diagnosis is charging twice for one piece of work and losing the comparison in the process.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A fixed starting point, written down

A timed, marked baseline with lost marks counted in six fixed categories is the only thing that makes a later claim about progress checkable. Without it, three months of pleasant sessions and three months of effective sessions are indistinguishable, which is the normal state of tutoring in this market.

Re-tests with a gap enforced

Nothing is tested in the session it was taught in. A fortnight is the minimum and a month is better, because a repair that survives the gap is real and one that does not is short-term memory. This is the single most effective check a parent can impose without understanding the subject.

Marks and categories, never a predicted grade

Raw marks are reportable; grades depend on boundaries set after a series is marked and moving between series. The record says what the counts did. Nobody involved is in a position to issue a grade, and no tutor can promise one, so the conversation stays on the quantities that actually exist.

The school's mock treated as the referee

An external assessment nobody in the arrangement controls is the best available check on whether the tutoring record is measuring anything. Blocks are planned to finish two weeks before each mock so the comparison is clean, and a flat mock against a positive record triggers a re-diagnosis rather than an explanation.

Evidence demanded about the tutor too

Ask any prospective tutor to mark one six-mark answer and name the scheme points that are missing. That fifteen-minute test separates a 4BI1 specialist from a general science tutor more reliably than a credential list, and it works at every price point in this market.

Delivered online, with the record as a by-product

Lessons run one to one over live video. IB Gram does not arrange home visits in the UAE. Where an in-home tutor would suit a student better, this page says so and says what to insist on instead: a photographed marked answer weekly, a written note, and a logged cold test score.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What evidence shows whether 4BI1 tutoring in Dubai is changing anything?+

Compare a dated, unseen re-test score against a recorded starting point. Without a baseline there is nothing to compare, which is why three months of pleasant sessions and three months of effective sessions look identical to a parent. The checkable signals are narrow: the same answer type scoring higher two weeks later, a cold recall score that is still higher a month afterwards, and fewer sections on the coverage gap list. Confidence, topics covered and papers attempted are not evidence, though they are what most families are given.

What should a baseline session for 4BI1 involve?+

A timed past-paper section sat under conditions, with no teaching in the hour, then marked properly against the scheme afterwards. Every lost mark is sorted into the same six categories each time: coverage, answer structure, data method, diagram and terminology recall, question reading, and arithmetic. Those six counts are the fixed point everything later is compared against. It feels like paying for an hour in which nothing was taught, and it is the only part of the arrangement that makes the rest falsifiable.

Why does my child's fluent six-mark biology answer only score three?+

Because extended answers are credited on the points the scheme requires, not on how the writing reads. A student can produce a well-constructed paragraph containing three of the four required ideas and earn three marks while feeling they wrote a strong answer. Seeing the scheme's list beside their own sentences is usually the moment the problem becomes obvious to the student. The repair is redrafting against the scheme, one answer at a time, until the student writes in separable points rather than in prose.

Can I read a Pearson mark scheme myself without knowing biology?+

Yes, and it is the most useful document in this process. The notation is compressed rather than complicated: a scheme often lists more acceptable points than there are marks, capped by a maximum; alternative wordings are shown as acceptable; some statements are to be ignored rather than penalised; the reverse form of an argument is frequently allowed; and an error carried forward convention lets later marks survive an earlier wrong value. Check the notation page of the actual scheme for your child's series, since the published document states its own conventions.

Why should a re-test wait two weeks instead of happening at the end of the session?+

Because a test sat immediately measures what the student remembers from the last hour, which is always flattering and tells a parent nothing. Most reported tutoring progress is of exactly that kind. A fortnight is the minimum useful interval and a month is better, and a repair that survives both is a habit rather than a recollection. It is also the one quality check a parent can enforce without any subject knowledge: ask for the date on every re-test score.

What should I receive after each biology session?+

One page, in the same format every week: the specification point worked on, the marks at stake, what the student produced, and what they are expected to do before the next session. Longer notes do not get read, and shorter ones carry nothing. A note that says the same thing three weeks running is itself information, usually that the category being worked on was the wrong one. Agree the format before the first paid hour rather than hoping for it afterwards.

My child's school only sends a grade and a comment. Is that enough to work from?+

Not on its own, and it is the common position in larger Dubai cohorts where annotating thirty sets of long answers is impractical. A grade with a comment cannot tell you whether marks went on coverage, on answer structure or on data method, and those need completely different work. Where a school does publish per-question marks, use that data rather than generating a second set. Where it does not, an external baseline is the cheapest way to get a breakdown that can be tracked.

Can a tutor tell me what grade my child will get in 4BI1?+

No, and a provider who offers a number is adding precision that does not exist. A raw mark out of 180 becomes a grade through boundaries set after the series has been sat and marked, and those boundaries move between series. What a record can honestly report is direction and quantity: lost marks in the structure category fell from eighteen to six, cold recall scores rose and held, the coverage gap list shortened. No tutor can promise a particular grade.

Should tutoring blocks be planned around the school mocks?+

Yes, and finishing two weeks before each mock rather than running through it makes the comparison clean. The mock is the one assessment nobody in the tutoring arrangement sets or marks, which makes it the referee. A tutoring record that roughly predicts the mock result is trustworthy. A record showing steady gains alongside a flat mock means the tutoring is measuring something other than what the examination measures, and that should trigger a re-diagnosis.

Which biology artefact tells you the most about a student in one look?+

A marked six-mark answer on gas exchange or digestion, with the scheme's required points listed beside what the student wrote. It shows coverage, answer structure and question reading at once, and it is the category where most 4BI1 marks are lost. A cold diagram labelling test is the cheapest repeatable measure, scoring out of a fixed total every fortnight, which produces a line a parent can read at a glance. Those two cover most of what matters.

Does an online biology tutor leave more of a record than a visiting one?+

In practice yes, because screen work is captured by default. The marked answer, the list of scheme points, the redraft and the written note all exist as files when the hour ends, and a parent who was not in the room can read them. In a living room the same work happens in the student's exercise book and in conversation. Neither tutor is being evasive; one format produces documents and the other does not. If you use an in-home tutor, impose the record deliberately.

Is an in-home tutor ever the better choice for biology?+

For a younger student or one who will not begin work unsupervised, genuinely yes, because a person in the room is harder to ignore than a person on a screen. IB Gram does not offer it: lessons run one to one over live video and home visits are a service offered only in India. Published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180 to 350 an hour, with home tutors advertising to AED 500, since travel sits inside the figure. If you go that route, require a photographed marked answer and a written note weekly.

How can I check a biology tutor knows Edexcel 4BI1 specifically?+

Send one six-mark answer your child has already written and ask which of the scheme's required points are present and which are missing. A tutor who teaches this specification answers quickly and specifically; one who does not comments on the writing. Ask also which content 4BI1 examines only in Paper 2B. Those two questions take fifteen minutes and separate a specialist from a general science tutor more reliably than any list of qualifications, at every price point in this market.

What stops a tutor from simply writing the answers for my child?+

The record, if it is kept properly. The student's own version is retained alongside the redraft rather than replaced by it, so a marked answer shows the original, the scheme's points and a second attempt in the student's own words. A single polished answer in the tutor's phrasing demonstrates nothing. 4BI1 has no coursework, which removes the commonest version of this risk, and a tutor should teach, question, mark and give feedback on work the student wrote.

Can a tutor give us past papers, mark schemes and grade boundary tables?+

A tutor should name the series and the paper and point you to the official source rather than distributing copies, because Pearson owns that material. Working through a paper the school has already issued to its cohort is ordinary teaching. Grade boundary tables in particular should never come from a tutoring provider: they belong to the board, they are released through official channels, and a table from the wrong series produces a confident prediction built on the wrong numbers.

What happens to the record if we change tutor halfway through?+

It should transfer intact. Another 4BI1 specialist picks up the same baseline, the same six category counts and the same priority order, with nothing re-assessed and nothing re-charged. Confirm that in writing before the first paid hour, because a provider who restarts the diagnosis charges twice for one piece of work and destroys the comparison in the process. Two or three sessions is enough to know whether a match is right, and saying so early costs a week rather than a term.

Ask for the record before you ask for the rate

If your child sits Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1 at a Dubai school, the question that matters is not what an hour costs but what it leaves behind. Send one marked six-mark answer. A 4BI1 specialist will go through it in a free thirty-minute session, name which of the scheme's required points are missing, and set out the baseline, the category counts and the artefacts the arrangement would produce each week. No card details are taken. Lessons run one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and if the tutor changes the record transfers with nothing re-charged.
