Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 tutor in Dubai is usually brought in for one reason: the student knows the material and still loses marks on the resource-booklet paper. 0680 is two written papers, no coursework and no practical, and half of it is data you have never seen before. IB Gram teaches both papers one-to-one online, in Gulf Standard Time, with UAE case studies the examiner will recognise.

  • Both 0680 papers taught, including the resource-booklet technique
  • UAE case studies: desalination, solar, mangroves, Gulf fisheries
  • Command-term drills built from the student's own marked answers
  • Free trial lesson before you pay, no card details required

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

0680 rewards reading data under pressure, not remembering more

Environmental Management is the IGCSE that looks forgiving and marks strictly. The content is approachable: water, energy, agriculture, fisheries, hazards, the atmosphere, population and sustainability, with no equations to derive and no organic mechanisms to learn. Students read the textbook, feel confident, and then sit a paper built around a resource booklet of maps, graphs and tables they have never seen, where the marks go to whoever can extract a figure accurately, describe a trend precisely and then evaluate a management option with evidence. Knowing the topic is the entry ticket, not the grade.

That mismatch is the single most common reason a Dubai family looks for a Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 tutor. The student is not weak. Their answers are well written and roughly right. They describe when the command term says explain, they quote a figure without its unit, they write about sustainability in general terms when the question handed them a table of actual water-abstraction data, and they offer a conclusion with no judgement in it. Every one of those is a technique fault, and technique faults are the fastest thing in any syllabus to fix.

The second reason is subject isolation. 0680 is frequently taught in Dubai by a geography or biology teacher carrying it as an extra, sometimes to a group of eight, and often with fewer past papers worked through than the sciences get. It also sits across three disciplines at once, so a student who is strong in biology may be weak on the physical geography of rocks and water, and a geographer may struggle with ecosystem and nutrient-cycle material. A tutor who has taught the whole syllabus can see which third of it is actually the problem.

The UAE is unusually good terrain for this subject, which is the part nobody exploits. Almost every topic on the syllabus has a live local example a Dubai student can see from the car window: a water supply that depends on desalination, one of the world's largest single-site solar developments at Seih Al Dahal, mangrove restoration along the Abu Dhabi coast, Gulf fisheries under pressure, air quality shaped by dust and construction, and a planned community in Dubailand built as a sustainability demonstration. An answer grounded in a named, real example reads differently from one built on a textbook case study about somewhere the candidate has never been.

On delivery, the position is the same as on every other UAE page we publish. IB Gram works one-to-one online over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, with the resource booklet and the student's own script shared on screen. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a paper whose whole skill is annotating a graph and marking an answer against a criterion, two people both able to draw on the same document is not a lesser arrangement than two people sharing one printout.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

0680 appears at different points in a Dubai student's route, and the teaching job changes with it. These are the stages where families most often ask for help, and what each one needs.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE, the two-year course

Where 0680 lives. A single-tier syllabus assessed by two written papers, with no coursework component and no practical examination, graded A* to G. Students often take it as a fourth science or as an alternative to a second traditional science, and schools in Dubai sometimes timetable it alongside Geography because the content overlaps usefully.

UK-curriculum schools take the largest share of Dubai's private-school enrolment, and almost all certificate at 16 through Cambridge or Pearson. KHDA inspects these schools annually on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, and inspection reporting looks closely at how well students apply knowledge to unfamiliar material, which is precisely what 0680 Paper 2 tests.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

The route many Dubai students arrive from. MYP Sciences and Individuals and Societies both build the habit of handling unfamiliar data, which transfers well to Paper 2. What MYP does not build is the discipline of a Cambridge command term, where describe, explain, suggest and evaluate each demand a different shape of answer and are marked as such.

Dubai runs a number of IB-continuum schools, and the emirate's 2026-27 intake adds three new International Baccalaureate schools among seven openings. Students moving from an MYP school into a Cambridge cohort at Year 10 usually need four to six weeks of command-term work before their written answers match their understanding.

Cambridge AS and A Level routes after 0680

0680 is a sound foundation for AS and A Level Geography, Environmental Management where offered, and the geography-adjacent half of several science routes. It is not a prerequisite for Biology or Chemistry at A Level, and should not be chosen on the assumption that it is. Check the subject requirements of the specific sixth form before using 0680 as a stepping stone.

Dubai sixth forms vary widely in what they offer post-16, and not every school that teaches 0680 continues the subject. If a student intends to carry environmental science further, ask the school directly which A Level or Diploma options the 0680 grade actually feeds, in writing, before Year 11 option choices are locked.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Students moving from 0680 into the Diploma commonly take Environmental Systems and Societies or Geography. The 0680 habit of evaluating a management option against evidence is the same habit those courses assess, and the resource-booklet skill maps almost directly onto Diploma data-based questions.

Because International Baccalaureate schools make up a modest but growing share of Dubai private enrolment, a Year 11 student weighing A Levels against the Diploma can reasonably use their 0680 performance as a signal: a student who enjoys judging competing management options tends to do well in the Diploma's integrated subjects.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0680 shares territory with several other Cambridge IGCSEs, and Dubai students usually take two or three of them together. Here is what each one assesses and where the overlap is genuinely useful.

Environmental Management (0680)

Single tier, two written papers

Resources, energy, agriculture, water, oceans and fisheries, hazards, the atmosphere, population, natural ecosystems and sustainable development. Paper 1 tests the theory; Paper 2 applies it to an unseen resource booklet. Marks go missing on command terms, unquoted units and evaluation that offers no evidence for its judgement.

Geography (0460)

Core and Extended

Physical and human geography with a dedicated skills paper. The closest relative of 0680 and the most efficient pairing: map and graph interpretation, population structure and water management are taught once and assessed in both, which halves the revision load for a student taking the two together.

Biology (0610)

Core and Extended

Cells to ecosystems, with an alternative-to-practical paper. Overlaps 0680 on nutrient cycles, food chains, biodiversity and the effects of pollution. Biology students usually arrive strong on ecosystems and weak on rocks, minerals and energy resources, which tells a tutor where to start.

Chemistry (0620)

Core and Extended

Atomic structure, bonding, rates, organic chemistry and analysis. Supplies the mechanism behind 0680's atmosphere topic: what acid deposition actually is, how greenhouse gases absorb radiation, why desalination brine behaves as it does. Students who hold both write far more precise explanations.

Physics (0625)

Core and Extended

Mechanics, thermal physics, waves, electricity and nuclear physics. Relevant to the energy topic: efficiency, energy transfer and the practical limits of solar and nuclear generation. A student who can reason about efficiency does not write that renewable energy is simply better.

Co-ordinated Sciences (0654)

Double award, Core and Extended

Biology, chemistry and physics in one double-award qualification. The commonest science route for Dubai students who add 0680 as a third option, because it leaves timetable room. The breadth helps, though the depth on ecosystems is thinner than single-subject Biology.

Combined Science (0653)

Single award, Core and Extended

A single-award overview of the three sciences. Students on this route often choose 0680 to strengthen a science-light option block. They need more support on the physical geography half of the syllabus, which their science course barely touches.

Global Perspectives (0457)

Single tier

A written paper on unseen sources plus an Individual Report and a Team Project. Shares 0680's territory on sustainable living and on water, food and agriculture, and the source-evaluation skill transfers straight into judging the reliability of a resource in Paper 2.

Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

Two written papers, no coursework. Included because 0680 answers live or die on arithmetic: percentage change from a table, reading a value between gridlines, comparing rates rather than totals. A student weak on proportional reasoning loses 0680 marks that look like geography errors.

Economics (0455)

Single tier

Markets, the macroeconomy, development and trade. Sharpens the cost side of 0680 evaluation: a student who understands opportunity cost writes a far better answer on whether a country should invest in desalination capacity or demand reduction.

Travel and Tourism (0471)

Single tier

The tourism industry, destination management and sustainability, assessed partly through case-study questions. Genuinely complementary in the UAE, where tourism pressure on coasts and heritage sites is a live management issue a 0680 candidate can cite.

Arabic as a Foreign Language (0544)

Single tier

Reading, writing, listening and speaking for non-native learners. Sits alongside the Arabic that KHDA requires in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, so it occupies real timetable space when option blocks are being chosen.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Dubai families run 0680 support with us, all delivered one-to-one online over live video. The difference is what each session is built around.

Resource-booklet technique block

Four to six sessions spent entirely on Paper 2 skills: extracting values with units, describing a trend in the language the mark scheme wants, calculating change correctly, and building an evaluation that uses the data rather than ignoring it. The most requested block, and the one with the clearest effect on a mock grade.

  • A timed data question each session, then a line-by-line review
  • Annotation taught on screen so the habit survives into the exam
  • A running list of the student's own repeated errors
  • Arithmetic checked as rigorously as the geography

Topic repair across the syllabus

For students whose problem is content rather than technique, usually on the third of the syllabus their teacher is least comfortable with. We map which topic areas are weak against the current syllabus list and work through them in order of exam weight rather than textbook order.

  • A short diagnostic across all ten topic areas in the first session
  • Priority set by how often a topic actually appears, not by chapter number
  • UAE examples attached to each topic so recall has a hook
  • Definitions drilled, because 0680 pays for precise ones

Weekly through the exam year

One hour a week alongside school teaching, pacing both papers across the year. This cadence suits students taking 0680 as a fourth science who get less class time on it, and it keeps the data-handling skill warm instead of rebuilding it in April.

  • Same tutor and slot, so nothing is re-explained each week
  • Session moved for mock weeks and Ramadan hours rather than cancelled
  • Short written note after each session on what was covered
  • Exam-season plan built backwards from the school's own timetable

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 actually is

Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management, syllabus 0680, is a single-tier qualification assessed by two written papers, with no coursework and no practical examination, graded A* to G. It sits deliberately across three disciplines: the physical geography of rocks, water and the atmosphere, the biology of ecosystems and populations, and the economics of managing a resource under competing demands. That breadth is the point of the subject and the reason it is harder to teach than its reputation suggests.

Dubai schools timetable it for several sensible reasons. It gives a science-light student a rigorous third or fourth option without a practical component to resource. It suits a cohort that includes strong geographers and strong biologists. And it produces work that evidences exactly the applied, cross-curricular reasoning that KHDA inspection reporting looks for. None of those reasons make it a soft option, and schools that present it as one tend to see a spread of grades that surprises everyone.

What families should understand before choosing it is the shape of the assessment. Paper 1 is the theory paper: structured questions across the syllabus content, where precise definitions and correctly used terminology do a great deal of the work. Paper 2, usually called Management in Context, hands the candidate a booklet of resources - graphs, maps, tables, photographs, short text extracts - about a place and a problem they have never studied, and asks them to interpret, apply and evaluate. Both papers run to about an hour and three quarters and each carries half the marks, though you should confirm the current timings and weightings on cambridgeinternational.org for your child's series, because Cambridge revises specifications on a cycle.

The practical consequence is that revision alone does not deliver a top grade in this subject. A student can know every topic and still sit at a grade 6 because they cannot work a resource booklet at speed. Equally, a student with moderate content knowledge and excellent data technique can score well above expectation. That is unusual among IGCSEs and it is why the tutoring plan for 0680 looks different from the plan for Biology.

02

The two papers, and where the marks actually sit

Treating both papers as the same exam is the first mistake. They reward different behaviour. Paper 1 rewards precision of language: a definition that distinguishes a renewable from a non-renewable resource properly, a named process rather than a vague one, a cause explained as a chain rather than asserted. Candidates who revise by reading lose marks here that candidates who revise by writing definitions out loud do not.

Paper 2 rewards process. The successful candidate reads the question set before the booklet, goes to the specific resource the question names rather than the whole booklet, extracts the value with its unit, and then answers at the level the command term demands. The unsuccessful candidate reads the booklet cover to cover, runs short of time, and writes general knowledge about sustainability in a question that handed them a table of figures to work with.

The arithmetic deserves separate mention because it accounts for a surprising share of lost marks. Percentage change calculated from the wrong baseline. A value read off a graph between gridlines and rounded to a figure the scale does not support. A comparison of totals where the question asked about rates. None of these are environmental-management errors; all of them are marked as wrong. A tutor who checks the sums as carefully as the geography finds marks in the first session.

The table below sets out what each paper asks for and where candidates most often lose marks on it. The headline weightings are shown as each paper carrying half the qualification, which is the current structure, but treat the durations and marks as figures to verify against the syllabus for your child's exam series rather than as fixed facts quoted from a page like this one.

03

The ten topic areas, and which third usually breaks

  • Diagnose across all ten topic areas before planning any sequence
  • Biologists need the physical topics; geographers need the ecological ones
  • Oceans and fisheries carries vocabulary almost everyone misuses
  • Sustainable development needs structure, not opinion
  • Work in order of exam weight rather than chapter order

The current 0680 syllabus is organised into roughly ten topic areas: rocks, minerals and their exploitation; energy and the environment; agriculture and the environment; water and its management; oceans and fisheries; managing natural hazards; the atmosphere and human activities; human population; natural ecosystems and human activity; and sustainable development and resource management. Check the current list and ordering on cambridgeinternational.org, because the arrangement has shifted between specification versions and a tutor working from an old list will teach the wrong emphasis.

In practice the weakness is predictable from the student's other subjects. Biologists are comfortable with natural ecosystems, food chains and population structure, and lose marks on rocks and minerals, energy generation and the physics of the atmosphere. Geographers hold water management, hazards and population easily and struggle with nutrient cycling, biodiversity measurement and the ecological effects of pollution. Students doing neither, who took 0680 as a standalone option, usually need the physical half built from scratch.

Two topics cause trouble regardless of background. Oceans and fisheries is unfamiliar to almost everyone and carries technical vocabulary - maximum sustainable yield, by-catch, trophic levels in a marine context - that candidates half-remember and misuse. And sustainable development is the topic students believe they can answer with common sense, which is exactly why their answers read as opinion rather than as evaluation. Both reward a few focused sessions far more than another read-through of the chapter.

The sequencing matters as much as the coverage. Working through topics in textbook order means spending the first weeks on rocks and minerals, which appears less often in the high-tariff questions than water or energy. We diagnose across all ten areas in the first session and then work in order of exam weight, which usually means water, energy, agriculture and sustainability come first and the rest follows.

04

Working the Paper 2 resource booklet, step by step

Paper 2 is a procedure, and the procedure can be taught. The sequence that works is: read every question first, noting which resource each one points to; go to that resource only; extract what the question asks for with units attached; check whether the command term wants a figure, a description, an explanation or a judgement; and write at that level and no higher. Students who do this finish the paper. Students who read the booklet first do not.

Describing a trend is where the easiest marks sit and where answers are weakest. A mark scheme wants the direction, the magnitude and the exception, with figures: not 'the amount increased' but 'it rose from about 320 to about 520 between 2010 and 2020, with a dip in 2015'. That is one sentence containing three creditable elements, and it is a habit a student can build in two or three sessions of practice on their own material.

Evaluation is where the top grades are decided. The question will offer a management option - a dam, a quota, a protected area, a desalination plant, a reforestation scheme - and ask how far it is likely to succeed or which of two is preferable. A strong answer takes evidence from the booklet, adds taught knowledge the booklet does not contain, considers who bears the costs and who takes the benefits, acknowledges a limitation in the data, and reaches a judgement that follows from what came before. A weak answer lists advantages, lists disadvantages, and then announces a conclusion unconnected to either list.

One honest note about practice material. We do not reproduce or supply Cambridge past papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents, because they are copyright and distributing them is not ours to do. What we do is point your child's school or exams officer to the official route for obtaining them, teach against the material the student legitimately holds, and build equivalent data questions ourselves from published sources such as UAE water and energy statistics when fresh material is needed. That is a better arrangement anyway: a question the student has not seen is the only honest test of the skill.

05

Command terms, and the answer each one is asking for

More 0680 marks are lost to command terms than to ignorance. The terms are a contract: each one names the operation the examiner wants, and performing a different operation well earns nothing. Students know this in the abstract and ignore it under time pressure, which is why the fix is drilling rather than explaining. Four marked papers with the command term circled in every question changes behaviour in a way that a conversation about command terms does not.

The pattern of error is consistent. Asked to describe, candidates explain, which spends time and adds no marks. Asked to explain, they describe, which caps the answer low. Asked to suggest, they hedge instead of committing to a plausible proposal, when the term invites a sensible idea the candidate cannot be expected to know for certain. Asked to evaluate, they balance without judging. And asked to calculate, they produce a number with no working and no unit, so a slip costs the whole item rather than one mark.

The table sets out the terms that appear most often with what each is asking for and the error that most commonly follows. It is worth your child having something like this on the wall during revision, because recognition under exam conditions is the whole skill. The mark allocations shown are typical rather than fixed, and the current specification is the authority on how any individual paper is structured.

There is a secondary benefit to this work that parents notice before the 0680 grade moves. Command-term discipline transfers to Geography, Biology, Business and Economics, all of which use the same vocabulary with the same meanings. A student who learns in October to answer the question actually printed tends to pick up marks across their whole option block, which makes this the best-value few sessions on the syllabus.

0680 COMMAND TERMS - WHAT EACH ONE WANTS AND THE ERROR THAT FOLLOWS. MARK TARIFFS ARE TYPICAL, NOT FIXED; THE CURRENT SPECIFICATION IS THE AUTHORITY

06

UAE case studies that make a 0680 answer specific

  • Water: desalination, brine disposal, treated-wastewater reuse, groundwater limits
  • Energy: Seih Al Dahal solar, Barakah nuclear, peak demand against peak output
  • Ecosystems: Abu Dhabi mangroves, Ras Al Khor wetland, Gulf fish stocks, coral heat stress
  • Atmosphere and hazards: dust, construction emissions, extreme summer heat
  • Attribute every figure, or name the mechanism instead of guessing a number

Examiners reward named, real examples, and a student in Dubai has better ones available than a student in most places. The water topic is the clearest case. The UAE's municipal water supply depends heavily on desalination, with the energy cost and the brine-disposal question built into every honest discussion of it, alongside treated-wastewater reuse for landscaping and the hard limits of groundwater in an arid climate with a high evaporation rate. A candidate who can set desalination capacity against demand management, and name the trade-off, is answering at the top of the band.

Energy gives the same advantage. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park at Seih Al Dahal is one of the world's large single-site solar developments, the Barakah nuclear plant in Al Dhafra supplies low-carbon electricity to the grid, and both sit in an economy historically built on hydrocarbons. That combination lets a student discuss an energy transition in a real place with real constraints rather than in the abstract, and the limitations are as useful as the achievements: solar output and air-conditioning demand do not peak at the same hour.

For ecosystems and conservation, the local material is strong and visible. Mangrove planting along the Abu Dhabi coast, the protected wetland at Ras Al Khor sitting inside a development zone in Dubai, pressure on Gulf fish stocks and the regulation of fishing seasons, coral under heat stress in unusually warm and saline water. For hazards and the atmosphere, dust storms, extreme summer heat and construction-related air quality are all documented and all local. A student who cites these rather than a textbook example about a river in Europe sounds like someone who has thought about the subject.

Two cautions, because precision is the point of this exercise. Use figures only where you can attribute them, and prefer naming a mechanism to quoting a statistic you half-remember; an invented number is worse than no number. And check any claim about a scheme's current status before using it, because the UAE builds quickly and a case study that was accurate three years ago may describe a project that has since expanded or changed. Teaching a student to say where a figure came from is as valuable as the figure.

07

0680 against Geography 0460 and Biology 0610

Dubai families choosing option blocks ask this question constantly, usually in the wrong form: which is easier. The useful question is which assessment shape suits the student, because these three subjects test genuinely different things and a student who thrives in one can struggle in another with identical effort.

0680 suits a student who reasons well about trade-offs and reads data calmly, and who would rather evaluate a management option than recall a mechanism. It has no coursework and no practical, which is a real advantage for a student already carrying two sciences with practical components, and a disadvantage for a student who earns marks more easily in continuous assessment than in a timed paper.

Geography 0460 overlaps 0680 heavily on water, population, hazards and development, and adds settlement, landforms and a skills paper with map work. If a student is taking Geography anyway, adding 0680 is efficient; the shared content is revised once. Biology 0610 is deeper and narrower, with cellular and physiological material 0680 never touches, and an alternative-to-practical paper that rewards experimental reasoning.

The table compares them on the dimensions that actually drive a choice. It is not a ranking. The right answer depends on the student's other option choices, on what the sixth form they are heading to requires, and on whether a timed evaluative paper plays to their strengths. Ask the school which combination its own cohort handles well, because departments know their own students better than any page does.

Scheduling, honesty and what happens if no 0680 specialist is free

Three practical points to close on, because a page that explains a syllabus and then goes vague about the service is not much use. The first is scheduling. Sessions are one-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time, which means the slot can sit where a Dubai week allows: after 6.30pm when the school run is finished, on a Saturday morning for a longer data-technique block, or after Iftar during Ramadan rather than in an exhausted afternoon. We move sessions for mock fortnights instead of charging through them.

The second is the academic-honesty boundary, which matters less in 0680 than in a coursework subject but still matters. There is no coursework and no practical to supervise here, so the line is mostly about materials: we do not reproduce or distribute Cambridge past papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents, and we point your school's exams officer to the official route instead. We teach against what the student legitimately holds and build equivalent data questions from published sources where new material is needed.

The third is availability, which almost nobody in this market discloses. Environmental Management is a thin subject across the UAE, and there are weeks - particularly between the January mocks and the end of Term 2 - when nobody who has taught the whole syllabus is free. When that happens we say so and give you a date, or offer a tutor who covers the half of the syllabus your child needs and is honest about the other half. We do not substitute a general science tutor at a specialist rate and hope the difference goes unnoticed.

Finally, the claims we will not make. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or Cambridge, and no centre or office in the UAE. We publish no grade promise and no percentage-of-students claim, because those figures cannot be stood behind. What we offer is a specialist, a free trial lesson, written evidence of what changed, and a straight answer when the answer is that we cannot help this week.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities, and the 0680 case studies on their doorstep

This is the one syllabus where a Dubai address is an academic asset. Each of these communities sits next to something a 0680 answer can name, and local examples are the fastest route to a better evaluation paragraph.

The Sustainable City, Dubailand

A planned community designed around solar generation, greywater reuse and car-free clusters. A student living here or visiting can describe a real attempt at sustainable urban living, which is far stronger material than a textbook case study for the sustainable development topic.

Jebel Ali and Dubai Investments Park

Industrial and port land use next to one of the region's significant coastal and wetland areas. Useful for the oceans and fisheries topic and for questions about conflicting demands on a coastline, where the competing interests are visible rather than hypothetical.

Al Quoz

A dense industrial district inside the city, which makes the atmosphere topic concrete: local emissions, dust from construction and the difference between a pollutant's source and the place its effects are felt. Students here write unusually well on air-quality management.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Low-density development on the desert fringe, where irrigated landscaping against evaporation makes the water topic immediate. A good place to think about water abstraction and the gap between supply and demand management.

Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor

Adjacent to a protected wetland used by migratory birds, which is the clearest local example of a conservation designation sitting inside a development zone. Exactly the tension the natural ecosystems and human activity topic asks candidates to evaluate.

Al Khawaneej and Mushrif

Established agricultural and park land on the eastern edge of the city, relevant to the agriculture topic: soil management, salinity, and the limits of cultivation in an arid environment with a high evaporation rate.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Emirates Living

Large irrigated landscapes in a water-scarce environment, which raises the treated-wastewater question honestly. A student can compare the water cost of amenity landscaping against agricultural use and reach a defensible judgement.

Dubai Marina and JLT

High-density coastal towers built on reclaimed land, which gives the student a visible example of coastal modification and its effects on sediment movement and marine habitat. A strong anchor for the oceans and fisheries and hazards topics.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Jumeirah

Long-established UK-curriculum secondaries with full science departments, where 0680 is typically an option block choice rather than a core subject. Students we support here usually have strong content knowledge and come to us specifically for resource-booklet technique on Paper 2.

  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Safa British School

Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City and Mirdif

A broad mix of Cambridge and Pearson schools serving families across a long commute. 0680 is more often taught here by a geographer carrying it as an additional subject, so the physical-geography half of the syllabus tends to be stronger than the ecosystems half.

  • GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Uptown International School
  • Credence High School
  • GEMS FirstPoint School

Dubai Hills, Arabian Ranches and Motor City

Newer community schools with smaller Year 11 cohorts, which means fewer past papers worked through in class and a smaller pool of locally available tutors who have taught the whole 0680 syllabus rather than one half of it.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches
  • Hartland International School
  • GEMS Metropole School
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Repton Dubai

Schools appear here only as context for the Dubai private-school market. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership, approval or endorsement relationship with any school, school group or regulator named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us which half is weak

Content or technique, and if content, which topics. A message saying the student is fine on water and lost on oceans and fisheries changes which tutor we look for and saves the first session, which would otherwise be spent discovering it.

  2. 02

    Send a marked paper

A mock script with the examiner's or teacher's marks on it is worth more than any description of the problem. A tutor who has read it arrives with a diagnosis: command terms, arithmetic, evaluation structure, or genuine gaps in the topic.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One session at no cost before any payment, with no card details required to book. Your child works a real data question, and you get a short written note afterwards on what the tutor thinks is actually losing the marks.

  4. 04

Fix a slot to the Dubai week

A repeating time that survives the school run and the mock timetable. Most families settle on a weekday evening after 6.30pm or a Saturday morning for the longer resource-booklet work, with Ramadan sessions moved to post-Iftar hours.

  5. 05

    Work in marked evidence

Each block produces something checkable: timed data questions returned with annotations, a shrinking error list, definitions tested rather than read. You should be able to see what changed without asking whether it is going well.

  6. 06

    Hand back to the school

At the end of a block we write a short note the student can show their 0680 teacher, so school teaching and tutoring are not giving contradictory advice about how to answer an evaluation question in the fortnight before the exam.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We teach the resource booklet as a procedure

Paper 2 is the half of 0680 that moves grades, and it is a sequence that can be taught: questions first, named resource only, value with unit, answer at the level the command term demands. Most students have never been shown the order explicitly.

UAE case studies, used precisely

Desalination and brine, Seih Al Dahal solar, Barakah, Abu Dhabi mangroves, Ras Al Khor, Gulf fish stocks. Real local examples beat textbook ones, provided every figure is attributed and no project's status is asserted without checking it.

We check the arithmetic as hard as the geography

Percentage change from the wrong baseline, values read between gridlines, totals compared when the question asked about rates. A meaningful share of 0680 marks are lost to sums, and they are the quickest marks in the syllabus to recover.

We do not distribute exam material

Cambridge papers, mark schemes and syllabus documents are copyright and we do not reproduce or supply them. We point your school's exams officer to the official route and build equivalent data questions from published sources when fresh material is needed.

Availability stated, not concealed

0680 is a thin subject in the UAE. If nobody who has taught the full syllabus is free in the week you need, we give you a date or a partial match described honestly, rather than placing a general science tutor at the specialist rate.

No borrowed authority

IB Gram holds no approval, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or Cambridge, and runs no UAE centre. This page explains what those bodies do and links you to them; it does not imply any of them endorse us.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 actually cover?+

Roughly ten topic areas spanning three disciplines: rocks, minerals and their exploitation; energy and the environment; agriculture; water and its management; oceans and fisheries; managing natural hazards; the atmosphere and human activities; human population; natural ecosystems and human activity; and sustainable development. It combines physical geography, ecology and the economics of managing a resource under competing demands. Assessment is two written papers with no coursework and no practical examination. Check the current topic list and ordering on cambridgeinternational.org for your child's exam series, because the arrangement has changed between specification versions.

Is 0680 an easier science option than Biology or Chemistry?+

It is lighter on content and heavier on application, which is not the same as easier. There is no practical paper and no coursework, so a student already carrying two practical sciences gains real timetable relief. What they meet instead is a paper built on data they have never seen, where marks go to accurate extraction, precise description and evidence-based evaluation rather than to recall. Students who revise by reading find 0680 harder than they expected. Students who reason well about trade-offs often outperform their science grades in it.

Does Environmental Management 0680 have coursework or a practical exam?+

No. The qualification is assessed entirely by two written papers, with no coursework component, no controlled assessment and no practical examination or alternative-to-practical paper. That is one of the main reasons Dubai schools offer it as an additional option: it needs no laboratory time and sets no internal submission deadlines for a school to manage. The trade-off is that every mark is earned in a timed paper, so a student who performs better in continuous assessment than under exam conditions should weigh that before choosing it.

Is 0680 tiered into Core and Extended like IGCSE Maths?+

No. Environmental Management is a single-tier syllabus: every candidate sits the same two papers and the full grade range from A* to G is available to all of them. This differs from Geography, Biology and Mathematics, where a Core entry caps the achievable grade. The practical consequence for a Dubai family is that there is no tier decision to get wrong and no conversation with the school about moving a student between routes, but also no safety net of an easier paper if the student is struggling in Year 11.

How is 0680 Paper 2 different from Paper 1?+

Paper 1 is the theory paper: structured questions across the syllabus where precise definitions and properly explained mechanisms carry the marks. Paper 2, usually called Management in Context, gives the candidate a resource booklet about a place and a problem they have not studied - graphs, maps, tables, photographs, short extracts - and asks them to interpret it, apply taught knowledge and evaluate management options. Paper 1 rewards revision; Paper 2 rewards a procedure. Most students who underperform in 0680 are fine on Paper 1 and losing marks on Paper 2.

Which 0680 topic do Dubai students find hardest?+

Oceans and fisheries, almost universally, because the vocabulary is unfamiliar and students half-remember terms like maximum sustainable yield and by-catch and then misuse them. Sustainable development runs a close second for a different reason: students believe common sense is enough, so their answers read as opinion rather than as structured evaluation. Beyond those two it depends on the student's other subjects. Biologists are weak on rocks, minerals and energy generation; geographers are weak on nutrient cycling and the ecological effects of pollution.

Can my child use UAE examples in 0680 exam answers?+

Yes, and they generally should, because examiners credit named, real examples and a Dubai student has unusually good ones available. Desalination and brine disposal for the water topic. The solar development at Seih Al Dahal and the Barakah nuclear plant for energy. Mangrove restoration on the Abu Dhabi coast and the protected wetland at Ras Al Khor for ecosystems. Gulf fish stocks and fishing seasons for oceans and fisheries. Two rules make the difference: name the mechanism rather than guessing a statistic, and check a project's current status before describing it.

Do universities accept Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680?+

It is a Cambridge IGCSE like any other and is normally treated as such in a subject count. For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, the published requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level at E or two Advanced Subsidiary Levels at the same grade. Whether a particular university treats 0680 as a science for a specific course is a question for that university's admissions office, in writing, rather than for a tutoring provider.

How many sessions does a 0680 tutor usually need before the exam?+

Four to six is the most common block, spent almost entirely on Paper 2 technique: a timed data question each session followed by a line-by-line review, with the student's own repeated errors tracked on a running list. Where content is the real problem rather than technique, eight to sixteen sessions across a term is more typical, sequenced by exam weight rather than by chapter order. A student who is weak on both halves and arrives six weeks before the paper should expect to prioritise technique, because it converts to marks faster.

Can a 0680 tutor help if my child has never studied Geography?+

Yes, and a reasonable share of 0680 candidates are in exactly that position, having chosen it as a standalone option. What it means practically is that the physical-geography half of the syllabus - rocks and minerals, water management, the atmosphere, hazards - has to be built rather than refreshed, and that map and graph interpretation needs explicit teaching rather than assuming. We diagnose across all ten topic areas in the first session so the plan reflects the real starting point, and we sequence by exam weight so the most valuable topics come first.

Which command terms appear most often in 0680 papers?+

Describe, explain, suggest, calculate and evaluate carry most of the marks, with state and identify on the low-tariff items. The errors are consistent: explaining when asked to describe, which wastes time; describing when asked to explain, which caps the mark; hedging when asked to suggest; and balancing without judging when asked to evaluate. Calculate items are lost to missing working and missing units rather than to arithmetic itself. Drilling these on marked papers changes behaviour faster than discussing them, and the habit transfers to Geography, Biology and Economics.

Does 0680 lead anywhere at A Level or in the IB Diploma?+

It is a sound foundation for AS and A Level Geography, for Environmental Management at AS where a school offers it, and for IB Environmental Systems and Societies or Geography in the Diploma. It is not a prerequisite for A Level Biology or Chemistry and should not be chosen on the assumption that it substitutes for them. Dubai sixth forms differ in what they offer post-16, and not every school teaching 0680 continues the subject, so confirm with the specific school in writing before Year 11 option choices are locked in.

Are 0680 lessons in Dubai delivered online or in our home?+

Online. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Sessions are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the resource booklet, the graph being annotated and the student's own marked script shared on screen. For this subject the format suits the work: both people can draw on the same figure, annotation habits can be modelled directly, and you are choosing a tutor who has taught the whole syllabus rather than whoever lives nearby.

How can we practise 0680 data questions if past papers are not supplied?+

We do not reproduce or distribute Cambridge past papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents, because they are copyright and that is not ours to hand out. The official route is through your child's school or its exams officer, and Cambridge's own site is where the current syllabus lives. In sessions we teach against the material the student legitimately holds, and where fresh material is needed we build equivalent data questions from published sources such as UAE water, energy and population statistics. A question the student has never seen is the only honest test of the skill anyway.

Start with one marked data question

If your child knows the content and still loses marks on Paper 2, the fastest diagnosis is a single timed data question reviewed line by line. Send us a marked mock script or tell us which topics are weak, and we will match a Cambridge IGCSE Environmental Management 0680 tutor and run a free trial lesson before anything is paid for. You will get a written note on what is actually costing the marks: command terms, arithmetic, evaluation structure or genuine gaps. Sessions are one-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time; home visits remain an India-only service.
