Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 Online Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 online tutor in Dubai should be able to tell you, in the first conversation, which of the seven key questions your child's cohort is examined on and which of the six depth studies the school entered. This page sets out what the syllabus actually contains: the core-content options, the depth studies, how historical evidence is evaluated at this level, the dates examiners return to, and how a Dubai timetable carrying Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies squeezes the history teaching that remains. Lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Teaching keyed to the seven core-content questions, not a generic syllabus tour
  • Depth-study coverage confirmed before the first session
  • Evidence evaluation taught as provenance and purpose, not as bias
  • A dated spine of events built once and rehearsed, not re-read

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

What the 0470 syllabus actually contains

Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 is often described to parents as a general history course, and it is not. It is a specific, bounded syllabus with a core-content option, one depth study chosen by the school, and one prescribed source topic set for the series. A tutor who cannot name which of those your child is studying is not yet in a position to teach them, and a parent who knows all three can tell within one conversation whether the person on the other end of the call has done this before.

The assessment has three parts. Paper 1 runs two hours, carries 60 marks and is worth 40% of the grade; candidates answer three questions, two from the core content and one on the depth study, and every question splits into a 4-mark part, a 6-mark part and a 10-mark part. Paper 2 runs two hours, carries 50 marks and is worth 33%, and is answered entirely from a set of sources on the prescribed topic, closing with a 12-mark question on how far the sources support a given statement. The final 27% comes either from Paper 3 coursework, an assignment of up to 2,000 words marked out of 40, or from Paper 4 Alternative to Coursework, a one-hour written paper also worth 40 marks.

Behind those papers sit three distinct demands. The first is knowledge: recalling and selecting relevant material, which sounds trivial and is the thing most often underestimated, because two hours of continuous writing leaves no capacity for effortful retrieval. The second is explanation: constructing causation and reaching a supported judgement, which is what the 6-mark and 10-mark parts reward. The third is source handling: interpreting and evaluating historical evidence, which is the whole of Paper 2 and the skill Dubai candidates most consistently misunderstand, because they have been taught to label sources as biased rather than to ask what a source is useful for.

The core content comes in two options. Option B, International Relations since 1919, is taught by the overwhelming majority of Dubai schools and runs through seven key questions, from the fairness of the 1919 to 1923 peace settlements to events in the Gulf at the end of the century. Option A covers the nineteenth century from 1814 to 1914 and is taught by far fewer schools here, which has real consequences for how easy it is to find a teacher who has delivered it recently. The depth study is a separate choice again: Germany, Russia, the USA, China, South Africa, or the Israelis and Palestinians since 1945.

Lessons for Dubai families run one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. For a syllabus this specific, that matters: the teacher is chosen for having taught your child's exact option rather than for living within reach of your community, and in a market where Germany is taught far more often than China or South Africa, that distinction decides whether the first session is teaching or research.

Four stages at which Dubai students meet this syllabus, with what each one is actually asking for. The stage determines what a session should spend its hour on far more than the year group does.

Y10-COREAges 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10: the core-content year

Most Dubai schools teach the core content first, which means Year 10 is a chronology year: seven key questions across eight decades, taught in sequence. The work that pays for itself here is building a dated spine of events that becomes automatic, because every judgement question in Year 11 will draw on it and no amount of essay practice compensates for a shaky sequence.

Because Option B begins in 1919 and ends around 2000, a Year 10 cohort in Dubai covers eighty years of international relations in roughly thirty teaching weeks, against mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons in the same timetable. The practical result is that one or two key questions are usually taught faster than the rest, and which ones varies by school.

Y11-DEPTHAges 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11: depth study, source topic and two-hour papers

The exam year adds the depth study and the prescribed source topic, and asks the student to hold all of it simultaneously under timed conditions. The shift is from learning history to producing it at speed: three questions in two hours on Paper 1, a full set of sources in two hours on Paper 2, and either a 2,000-word assignment or a one-hour alternative paper.

Dubai mock seasons generally fall in the winter term and the Cambridge entry deadline sits months before the series. A Dubai centre enters candidates for the June series or the November series, and in both cases the board's final entry closes several months ahead of the first paper, with the centre's own internal deadline earlier still. For 0470 that matters more than it sounds, because the series decides the prescribed source topic that Paper 2 is built on, while the depth study is the school's own choice made earlier still. Ask the exams officer in writing for the series, the entry deadline and the depth study being taught, and expect the exact day to come off the statement of entry rather than off any published guide.

MANDATORY-BESIDEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

0470 alongside the UAE mandatory subjects

Every Dubai private school teaches Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and that time comes out of the same week. For a history student this is a scheduling fact with academic consequences: option subjects lose lessons first when the timetable tightens, and history is almost always an option.

KHDA requires these subjects in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, calculates instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, and requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes strictly prohibited. The federal position is that private schools must follow Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies alongside their own curriculum.

POST-16-HISTAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

After 0470: A Level History 9489 or IB Diploma History

Both routes assume the 0470 skills and then change their character. Source evaluation becomes historiographical rather than provenance-led, essays double in length, and independent reading replaces the textbook. A student who reached a strong 0470 grade through secure narrative and clean structure is well prepared; one who reached it by memorising model answers is not.

Several Dubai schools run Cambridge AS and A Level History 9489 and IB Diploma History side by side, and the honest difference for most candidates is writing volume rather than difficulty. A question worth asking in Year 11 is which of the two the department has staffed consistently over the last three years, because continuity of teaching matters more than the label.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

This is the content itself: the key questions of both core-content options, the depth studies, and the two skills the papers are built on. These are the units a 0470 session is actually spent inside.

The peace settlements, 1919-1923

0470 Option B · key question 1

Versailles and the other treaties, the aims of the leading powers at Paris, German reactions, and whether the settlement was fair. The commonest weakness is knowing the terms and not being able to argue the fairness question from more than one perspective, which is exactly what a part (c) demands.

The League of Nations, 1920-1939

0470 Option B · key question 2

Structure and membership, the 1920s successes and limits, the Manchurian and Abyssinian crises, and why the League failed. A rich source of causation questions, and one where candidates often confuse the League's organisational weaknesses with the specific decisions taken in each crisis.

The collapse of international peace by 1939

0470 Option B · key question 3

Nazi foreign policy, rearmament, the Rhineland, Anschluss, Munich in 1938, the Nazi-Soviet Pact and the invasion of Poland. The argument examiners return to is appeasement: whether it caused the war, delayed it, or was the only realistic policy available.

Who was to blame for the Cold War?

0470 Option B · key question 4

Yalta and Potsdam, the Soviet takeover of Eastern Europe, the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan in 1947, the Berlin Blockade of 1948 to 1949, and the founding of NATO. The question is a judgement question by design, so a one-sided answer cannot reach the upper levels however accurate it is.

American containment in practice

0470 Option B · key question 5

Korea from 1950 to 1953, the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, and American involvement in Vietnam. Three case studies with a shared question: how effective containment was. Students frequently narrate all three and compare none of them, which is where the marks sit.

Soviet control of Eastern Europe

0470 Option B · key question 6

Hungary in 1956, the Berlin Wall in 1961, Czechoslovakia in 1968, Solidarity in Poland, and the collapse of 1989. The analytical thread is how secure that control actually was, which requires treating each crisis as evidence rather than as a separate story.

Events in the Gulf, c.1970-2000

0470 Option B · key question 7

The Iranian revolution, the Iran-Iraq war, the invasion of Kuwait and the war of 1990 to 1991. The key question most relevant to students in this region and, in our experience, the one Dubai cohorts are most often taught last and fastest.

The nineteenth-century settlement, 1814-1871

0470 Option A · the minority route

The Congress of Vienna, the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, and the unifications of Italy and Germany. Taught by relatively few Dubai schools, so a cohort on Option A should establish early whether a prospective tutor has delivered it recently rather than merely studied it.

Empire, the Eastern Question and the road to 1914

0470 Option A · the minority route

The decline of Ottoman power, the Congress of Berlin, the partition of Africa, the alliance system, the Moroccan and Bosnian crises and the Balkan wars. Dense in treaties and alliances, which makes a dated spine more important here than anywhere else in the syllabus.

Depth Study: Germany, 1918-1945

0470 depth study · Paper 1 part (c) and Paper 4

Weimar's crises from 1919 to 1923, the Stresemann recovery, the Nazi rise, the Reichstag Fire and Enabling Act of 1933, the Night of the Long Knives, the Nuremberg Laws and life in the Third Reich. Taught in Dubai far more often than any other option.

Depth Study: Russia, 1905-1941

0470 depth study · Paper 1 part (c) and Paper 4

1905, the February and October revolutions of 1917, the civil war, the New Economic Policy, Stalin's rise, collectivisation and the purges. Dense chronology with unfamiliar names, where the sequence has to be secure before judgement is attempted.

Depth Study: the USA, China, South Africa or the Israelis and Palestinians

0470 depth study · Paper 1 part (c) and Paper 4

The four less commonly taught options in this market: the USA from 1919 to 1941, China from around 1930 to 1990, South Africa from around 1940 to 1994, and the Israelis and Palestinians since 1945. Each is examined on evidence and argument against the published criteria.

Recall and selection of knowledge

0470 across all papers

The skill behind every mark on Paper 1. Not the volume of knowledge but the speed of access: a candidate who can place events in sequence without hesitation has capacity left for argument, and one who cannot spends it on retrieval instead.

Interpretation and evaluation of evidence

0470 Paper 2 · 33% of the grade

Reading provenance before content, judging what a source is useful for rather than whether it is true, decoding a cartoon's intended message, and grouping a set of sources for and against a statement. Habits rather than knowledge, which is why they move quickly when taught.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a 0470 syllabus gap gets closed, chosen by what is actually missing rather than by a standard package. All three run one-to-one over live video, and none involves attendance at a UAE address.

Weekly teaching through the key questions

For a student whose content is thin rather than whose technique is weak. One key question at a time, taught in sequence with the dated spine built as you go, so that by the end there is a single document covering eight decades rather than seven sets of notes that do not connect to each other.

  • One key question per block of sessions, taught in chronological order
  • A dated spine of events extended at the end of every session
  • Causation practised as the content is taught, not afterwards
  • A short recall check at the start of each session on the previous one

Depth-study rebuild for a mid-course transfer

For a student who arrives in a Dubai cohort entered for a depth study they have never studied. The work is content, not technique, and pretending otherwise wastes the budget. A written gap list comes first, then the option is taught from the start at a pace a transferring student can hold.

  • A dated written list of what the cohort has covered and the student has not
  • The depth study taught in sequence rather than revised in fragments
  • Part (c) practice introduced only once the narrative is secure
  • The old school's option set aside rather than half-maintained

Evidence-evaluation block for the source paper

Six to ten sessions on Paper 2, which is a third of the grade and is examined on a prescribed topic that changes between series. The content therefore cannot be the work; reading provenance, judging utility and grouping sources for a 12-mark verdict is. The fastest measurable change available in this syllabus.

  • Provenance read before content on every source as a trained reflex
  • Utility answered as useful for what, never as true or biased
  • Cartoon sources decoded for intended message rather than described
  • The 12-mark answer built by grouping for and against, then judging

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 asks a student to do

The three components of Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 test three different things, and a student who does not know which is which tends to prepare for all of them in the same way. Paper 1 is two hours and 60 marks, 40% of the grade, answered as three questions each split into parts worth four, six and ten marks. Paper 2 is two hours and 50 marks, 33% of the grade, answered entirely from sources on a prescribed topic. The final 27% is either a 2,000-word coursework assignment marked out of 40, or Paper 4, a one-hour written paper also worth 40 marks.

Underneath that sits a cleaner distinction. Paper 1 rewards knowledge and causal argument. Paper 2 rewards the handling of evidence and barely rewards recall at all, because the sources are printed in front of the candidate and the topic rotates between series. The coursework or Paper 4 rewards sustained argument on the depth study. Three components, three skills, and a revision plan that treats them identically will leave one of them untouched.

The practical reading for a Dubai family is that the grade can be approached from more than one direction. A candidate with secure content and weak source technique is losing most of their marks on a third of the paper that responds to a short block of teaching. A candidate with excellent source instincts and a shaky chronology has the opposite problem and a slower road. The first question an online tutor should ask is not what grade the student is on; it is which of the three components the last mock shows them losing marks in.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, with the source extract or the student's own writing on a shared screen. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we provide only in India. The table below sets the three components side by side so that the comparison is on one page rather than scattered across a syllabus document.

Option B: the seven key questions, 1919 to 2000

Almost every Cambridge school in Dubai teaches Option B, International Relations since 1919, and it is organised as seven key questions rather than as a continuous narrative. Knowing them as questions rather than as topics changes how a student revises, because each one has an argument built into it that the exam will ask them to take a position on.

The sequence runs from the peace settlements of 1919 to 1923 and whether they were fair, through the League of Nations and why it failed, to the collapse of international peace by 1939 and the long argument about appeasement. Then it crosses into the Cold War: who was to blame, how effectively the United States contained communism through Korea, Cuba and Vietnam, and how secure Soviet control of Eastern Europe really was from Hungary in 1956 to the collapse of 1989. The final key question covers events in the Gulf from around 1970 to 2000, including the Iranian revolution, the Iran-Iraq war and the invasion of Kuwait.

Two of those seven cause most of the trouble in Dubai cohorts, for opposite reasons. The League of Nations is taught early, when students are still learning how to write at this level, so the content is often secure and the argument underdeveloped: candidates can list the League's weaknesses and cannot distinguish them from the specific decisions taken over Manchuria and Abyssinia. The Gulf question is the one most often taught last and fastest, because it sits at the end of a crowded two-year scheme of work, and it is also the question students in this region are best placed to answer well if anyone gives them the time.

The teaching move that works is to convert each key question into a two-sided argument with three specifics on each side, built as the content is learned rather than assembled in revision. A student who can argue both that appeasement caused the war and that it was the only policy available, with named events and dates on each side, is prepared for any part (c) the examiner can set on that question. A student who has a chapter of notes is not.

03

Option A, 1814 to 1914, and why fewer Dubai schools teach it

The other core-content option covers the nineteenth century: international relations and developments from 1814 to 1914. It is a legitimate and in some ways more coherent course, and it is taught by a small minority of schools in this market. That minority status has practical consequences worth knowing before you hire anyone.

The content runs from the Congress of Vienna and the settlement after Napoleon, through the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, to the unifications of Italy and Germany in the 1860s and 1870. It then moves into the Eastern Question and the decline of Ottoman power, the partition of Africa, the hardening of the alliance system, and the crises that precede 1914: Morocco in 1905 and 1911, Bosnia in 1908, and the Balkan wars of 1912 and 1913. It is denser in treaties and congresses than Option B, and considerably less familiar to students from popular culture, which cuts both ways: nothing is half-known from films, and nothing is half-wrong either.

For a Dubai family the issue is supply. A tutor who has taught Option B to five cohorts may never have delivered Option A, and learning it alongside your child is not what you are paying for. This is the single most useful question to ask at the point of enquiry, and the honest answer narrows the field quickly. It is also a reason a cohort on Option A should not leave the search until the spring term: the pool is small and it does not expand under pressure.

The teaching approach differs slightly too. Because the period turns on diplomacy, a dated spine is not optional here. A student who cannot place the Congress of Berlin relative to the Dual Alliance, or the Moroccan crises relative to the Anglo-Russian entente, cannot build a causal argument about 1914 regardless of how well they write. The spine comes first, the argument second, and that order is not negotiable in this option.

04

The six depth studies, and what each actually requires

Every 0470 candidate studies one depth study in detail, examined through the part (c) question on Paper 1 and through either the coursework or Paper 4. The school chose it, and the six options differ substantially in what they demand of a student rather than merely in subject matter.

Germany from 1918 to 1945 is the most widely taught option in Dubai and probably the most heavily resourced in the world. Its difficulty is volume: Weimar's crises, the Stresemann recovery, the Nazi rise, the consolidation of power in 1933 and 1934, and life in the Third Reich, all with dense chronology. Russia from 1905 to 1941 has similar volume with the added burden of unfamiliar names and two revolutions in one year, which is where students lose their footing. The USA from 1919 to 1941 is comparatively compact, and its characteristic difficulty is economic mechanism: candidates describe the Crash accurately and cannot explain why it propagated into a decade-long depression.

The three less commonly taught options each present a specific challenge. China from around 1930 to 1990 covers an enormous span with almost no prior familiarity for most students, so the spine is the whole battle. South Africa from around 1940 to 1994 rewards exact terminology to an unusual degree, because the legislation and the organisations have precise names and an imprecise answer reads as a vague one. The Israelis and Palestinians since 1945 is assessed, like every other option, on evidence, causation and argument against the published criteria, and the responsibility of a tutor there is the accurate and careful use of contested terminology rather than the advancement of any position.

The table below sets out what examiners return to in each option and the misconception that most often costs marks. It is a guide to what to prepare rather than a ranking: the option your child studies is the one the school entered, and the useful question is how to teach it well.

THE SIX 0470 DEPTH STUDIES - WHAT EXAMINERS RETURN TO
Depth studyWhat examiners return toThe hardest part for studentsThe common misconception
Germany, 1918-1945Weimar's crises, the 1933-34 consolidation, life under the regimeThe sheer volume of dated detail to holdThat the Nazis seized power, rather than were appointed and then consolidated

The USA, 1919-1941The boom, the Crash, the Depression, the New DealExplaining economic mechanism rather than describing itThat the Crash alone caused the Depression
China, c.1930-c.1990The Communist victory, the Great Leap Forward, the reform eraAn unfamiliar sixty-year span with little prior knowledgeReading the whole period as one continuous policy
South Africa, c.1940-c.1994Apartheid legislation, resistance, international pressurePrecise names of laws and organisationsUsing general terms where the syllabus expects exact ones

05

Why 'the source is biased' scores nothing

Paper 2 is a third of the 0470 grade and it is where the largest single block of marks is thrown away in this market, by a habit learned early and never corrected. A student is asked how useful a source is, writes that it is biased and therefore unreliable, and stops. That answer is worth very little, and the reason is worth explaining properly because once a student understands it the marks appear immediately.

Every historical source is partial. A politician's speech, a cartoon, a memoir, a government statistic and a private diary are all produced by someone with a position, for an audience, at a moment. Partiality is not a defect to be noted; it is the property that makes a source evidence of something. A ministerial speech defending a policy is weak evidence of whether the policy worked and excellent evidence of how the government wished it to be seen. The examiner's question is never whether a source is true. It is what the source is useful for finding out.

The move a candidate has to make is therefore mechanical and teachable: read the provenance first, state who produced it, when, for whom and why, and then say what that provenance makes the source good evidence of. A student who writes that a 1936 German newspaper report is unreliable has said nothing. A student who writes that it is unreliable as a record of public opinion because the press was controlled, and valuable as evidence of what the regime wanted believed, has made two marks appear from the same observation.

The same logic governs the comparison and the final judgement questions. Two sources that disagree are not a problem to resolve; the disagreement is the finding, and the explanation lies in who produced each one. The 12-mark question asking how far a set of sources supports a statement is answered by grouping the sources that support it, grouping those that do not, and using provenance to say which group carries more weight. The table below sets out the common source types with what each is weak and strong evidence of.

EVALUATING 0470 SOURCES - WHAT EACH TYPE IS GOOD AND BAD EVIDENCE OF

06

Paper 4 Alternative to Coursework in sixty minutes

If your child's school entered Paper 4 rather than Paper 3, the final 27% of the grade arrives as a one-hour written paper worth 40 marks on the depth study. It is a different kind of challenge from everything else in the syllabus, and the usual failure is treating it as a short Paper 1.

Sixty minutes for forty marks is a demanding rate, and the paper rewards a candidate who has decided in advance roughly how long each part of the answer gets. Students who begin with a scene-setting introduction of the kind a coursework assignment would carry run out of time before the argument is complete, and an unfinished argument on a depth study the candidate knows well is the most avoidable loss available in 0470. The correction is a plan written in two minutes on the paper itself: the two sides, three specifics each, and the line the conclusion will take.

The content is the depth study already studied, so there is no new material to learn. What is new is the compression. An argument that would occupy twelve hundred words in coursework has to be made in a fraction of that without becoming a list, which means the evidence has to be chosen rather than deployed exhaustively. Three precise specifics on each side will outscore eight general ones, and selecting those three is a skill that improves with marked practice rather than with reading.

Three to five sessions usually covers it, which makes Paper 4 the cheapest of the three components to prepare for. The sessions should be spent on timed attempts and marking rather than on content revision, because the content exists and the clock is the constraint. Any session on this paper that does not include a timed piece of writing has probably not addressed the actual problem.

07

The dated spine: solving the two-hour memory problem

Two hours of continuous writing under exam conditions leaves no spare capacity for effortful recall. A candidate who has to pause and reconstruct whether the Rhineland came before or after the Anschluss is spending on retrieval what the examiner is paying for in argument. This is the least discussed and most decisive part of 0470 preparation, and it cannot be bought in the final fortnight at any price.

The instrument is a dated spine: a single document, built over the course and rehearsed at intervals, that holds the sequence rather than the detail. For Option B it runs from Versailles in 1919 through the League's founding in 1920, the Ruhr occupation and Munich Putsch of 1923, the Manchurian crisis of 1931, Abyssinia in 1935 and 1936, the Rhineland in 1936, Anschluss and Munich in 1938, the Nazi-Soviet Pact and the invasion of Poland in 1939, then Yalta and Potsdam in 1945, the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan in 1947, the Berlin Blockade of 1948 to 1949, Korea from 1950, Hungary in 1956, the Berlin Wall in 1961, Cuba in 1962, Czechoslovakia in 1968, the Gulf from the late 1970s, and 1989.

For a Germany depth study it runs in parallel and in more detail: the abdication and armistice of 1918, the Weimar constitution and Spartacist rising of 1919, the Kapp Putsch of 1920, hyperinflation and the Munich Putsch in 1923, the Dawes Plan of 1924 and Locarno of 1925, the Young Plan of 1929, the elections of 1932, Hitler's appointment as Chancellor in January 1933, the Reichstag Fire in February and the Enabling Act in March, the Night of the Long Knives and Hindenburg's death in 1934, the Nuremberg Laws of 1935, and Kristallnacht in 1938.

What makes a spine work is rehearsal rather than possession. Written out once it is a document; tested at intervals with the misses recorded, it becomes automatic. Fifteen minutes at the start of a session, every session, costs very little and is the difference between a candidate who writes from knowledge and one who writes around it. The table below is the Option B spine in the form students find easiest to rehearse.

Mandatory UAE subjects beside 0470, and the timetable collision

A Dubai history student's week is not the same as a British one, and the difference is not cosmetic. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements were to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. That time comes from the same timetable the option subjects are drawn from, and history is almost always an option.

The detail matters because it is specific. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit, allows schools to vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and advises that no mandatory-subject lesson runs shorter than 25 minutes. For Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, Arabic is the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students, and the school's licensed-curriculum language applies for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and in moral, social and cultural studies. For these subjects the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited.

The federal position behind all of this is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. Every emirate's mandatory-subject requirement rests on that baseline, which is why the pattern repeats across the UAE rather than being a Dubai peculiarity.

For a 0470 candidate the consequence is arithmetic. A fixed number of periods a week, several of them committed, means a history scheme of work covering seven key questions plus a depth study plus a source topic is usually delivered at a pace that assumes nothing goes wrong. When something does go wrong, a school trip, an absence, a term that runs short, the content taught fastest is the content taught last, which across Dubai cohorts is reliably the final key question. Knowing that in advance is how a family decides what outside help is actually for.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities where our 0470 students live

Delivery over video means geography no longer limits who teaches your child. It still shapes which part of the syllabus is thin, because schools differ in what they teach quickly. These are the communities our 0470 students write in from.

Jumeirah Lakes Towers and Al Sufouh

Dense tower communities feeding several large British-curriculum schools. Cohorts here are usually on Option B with Germany as the depth study, and the content taught fastest tends to be the final key question on the Gulf.

Dubai Festival City and Ras Al Khor

Mixed-curriculum cluster with large year groups. History sets are often substantial, which means plenty of class discussion and comparatively little individual feedback on the 10-mark judgement questions.

Al Garhoud and Oud Metha

Older, established schools with long-standing humanities departments and deep past-paper stocks. Students here usually arrive with secure core content and need work on evidence evaluation rather than on narrative.

Al Quoz and Al Khail Heights

Smaller schools and a high proportion of families seeking additional academic support. Option sets are small, so a missed fortnight removes a whole key question, and those gaps show up as blank patches in the dated spine.

Arjan, Barsha South and Dubai Science Park

Rapidly growing communities with newer schools and young history departments. The common pattern is careful content teaching with few top-band exemplar essays in circulation for students to measure their own writing against.

Remraam, Dubailand and Liwan

Outlying residential communities with long school runs. Students here benefit most from a fixed evening slot, and their scripts most often show the timing fault: a generous first question and an unfinished third.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Emirates Hills

Villa communities feeding schools with large option blocks. History frequently competes against economics or business studies, so sets can be small and the student who chose it is often genuinely interested, which changes what a session can attempt.

Al Nahda and Muhaisnah

Mixed-curriculum area with a wide spread of starting points inside a single set. The most useful early work here is almost always the chronology spine, because the content was delivered at a pace that assumed prior knowledge.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Schools serving JLT, Al Sufouh and the Marina corridor

Established British-curriculum cohorts, almost all on Option B with Germany as the depth study. Departments here hold deep resources, so external teaching is usually about evidence evaluation and judgement writing rather than about content delivery.

  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Regent International School
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills

Schools serving Al Garhoud, Festival City and Oud Metha

Long-established schools with mixed curricula and large year groups. The constraint in this cluster is individual feedback volume rather than teaching quality, since a history set of thirty cannot receive fortnightly marked essays from one teacher.

  • Deira International School
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Greenfield International School

Schools serving Al Quoz, Arjan and Dubailand

Newer and smaller secondary cohorts across a fast-growing part of the city. Small history sets mean fewer exemplar answers circulating and a higher chance that one key question was taught in half the time the others received.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Establish the three syllabus facts

Which core-content option the cohort studies, which depth study the school entered, and whether the last 27% comes from coursework or Paper 4. One email to the head of history produces all three, and no sensible teaching plan exists without them. A tutor who does not ask has not understood the syllabus.

  2. 02

Find out which component is losing the marks

Send the mock script. Paper 1 and Paper 2 fail for completely different reasons, and the remedies have different timescales: source technique moves in weeks, chronology takes a term. The script shows which of the three components the grade is actually resting on, which a grade on its own never does.

  3. 03

Build the dated spine before the argument

If the sequence is not automatic, the judgement writing cannot work, because exam capacity is finite. The spine is written once and rehearsed at the start of every session with the misses recorded. It is the least interesting part of the plan and the one that makes the rest of it possible.

  4. 04

Convert each key question into a two-sided argument

Three specifics for and three against, written down as the content is learned. A student who can argue both sides of appeasement or of Cold War blame, with named events and dates, is prepared for any part (c) on that question. A chapter of notes is not the same thing and never has been.

  5. 05

    Drill the source paper separately

Paper 2 is a third of the grade and its prescribed topic rotates, so technique rather than content is the work. Provenance first, utility as useful for what, cartoons decoded, sources grouped for the 12-mark verdict. Six to ten sessions produces the fastest measurable change available in this syllabus.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught to your child's actual option

Option A or Option B, and one of six depth studies. We confirm which a teacher has taken a cohort through before matching, and say plainly when the answer does not include yours. In a market where Germany dominates, a China or South Africa cohort needs that question asked early.

Evidence evaluation taught as a method

Provenance before content, utility as what a source is good evidence of, cartoons decoded for intended message, the 12-mark answer built by grouping. The habit of writing that a source is biased and stopping is the largest avoidable loss in the paper, and it is a teachable fault.

The chronology is treated as a precondition

A dated spine, written once and rehearsed with misses recorded, because two hours of writing leaves no capacity for effortful recall. This is the part of 0470 preparation that cannot be compressed into the final fortnight, so it is started first rather than promised later.

Content gaps named rather than papered over

A student who transferred into a cohort entered for a different depth study has a content problem, and selling them essay technique first wastes the budget. The first document in that case is a dated list of what the cohort covered and the student did not.

The student's own work stays their own

A tutor marks where evidence is missing, asks whether the counter-case has been engaged and explains what the criteria reward. Assessed material is never produced on a candidate's behalf, and syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes are referenced and linked rather than redistributed.

No regulator or board endorses IB Gram

We hold no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson approval and operate no UAE office. The regulators are named on this page because their rules shape a Dubai student's week, not because any of them has any relationship with us.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What are the three components of Cambridge IGCSE History 0470?+

Paper 1 is a two-hour written paper of 60 marks worth 40% of the grade, answered as three questions each split into parts of four, six and ten marks: two on the core content and one on the depth study. Paper 2 is a two-hour source paper of 50 marks worth 33%, set on one prescribed topic and ending with a 12-mark question on how far the sources support a statement. The last 27% is either Paper 3 coursework, up to 2,000 words and marked out of 40, or Paper 4, a one-hour paper also worth 40 marks.

What is the difference between Option A and Option B core content in 0470?+

Option B covers International Relations since 1919 through seven key questions: the peace settlements, the League of Nations, the collapse of peace by 1939, blame for the Cold War, American containment, Soviet control of Eastern Europe, and events in the Gulf. Option A covers 1814 to 1914, from the Congress of Vienna through the unifications of Italy and Germany to the alliance system and the crises before the First World War. Nearly every Cambridge school in Dubai teaches Option B, which makes finding a teacher for Option A noticeably harder.

How much of the 0470 grade comes from source work?+

A third. Paper 2 carries 50 marks and 33% of the qualification, and it is answered entirely from a printed set of sources on one prescribed topic, so recall plays almost no part in it. Because the topic rotates between series, content revision has limited value here and technique has nearly all of it. That combination makes Paper 2 the best-value component in the syllabus to teach, and in practice the one most often left until the final weeks when there is no longer time to change a habit.

Why does writing that a source is biased score nothing?+

Because every source is partial, so noting it tells the examiner nothing. The question is never whether a source is true; it is what the source is useful for finding out. A government speech defending a policy is weak evidence of whether the policy worked and excellent evidence of how the government wanted it seen. A candidate who states the provenance, then says what that provenance makes the source good evidence of, earns the marks from exactly the same observation that a one-line bias answer wastes.

What does the 6-mark part of a 0470 question want that the 4-mark part does not?+

A causal chain rather than a set of facts. The 4-mark part asks for description or recall and wants a handful of short factual statements with no argument attached. The 6-mark part asks why something happened and rewards two or three reasons developed over successive steps, with the link between cause and consequence stated rather than implied. Four causes asserted once each sits in the middle band; two causes taken properly from trigger through to outcome reaches the top. The marker is looking for the connective, not the quantity.

Which 0470 depth study has the least content to memorise?+

The USA from 1919 to 1941 is the most compact of the six and the best resourced for its size, covering the boom of the 1920s, the Crash, the Depression and the New Deal. Its characteristic difficulty is not volume but mechanism: students describe the Crash accurately and cannot explain why it propagated. Germany and Russia carry substantially more dated detail, and China spans sixty years with little prior familiarity. In any case the choice is the school's, so the practical question is how to teach the option entered rather than which is lightest.

How long is Paper 4 Alternative to Coursework for 0470?+

One hour, for 40 marks, worth the same 27% of the grade as the coursework route. The content is the depth study already studied, so nothing new has to be learned; the constraint is the clock. The usual failure is writing a Paper 1 style answer at coursework length, beginning with a scene-setting introduction and running out of time mid-argument. A two-minute written plan naming the two sides and three specifics each is the single highest-value habit for this paper.

Does 0470 Option B require knowledge of events after 1991?+

The final key question covers events in the Gulf from roughly 1970 to 2000, which takes the course past 1991, and the collapse of Soviet control in Eastern Europe runs to 1989 and beyond. In practice Dubai cohorts most often meet this material last and fastest, because it sits at the end of a crowded scheme of work. Confirm with the school how far the cohort was actually taught, because an exam question on a key question delivered in three lessons is a predictable and avoidable loss.

How many dates does a 0470 candidate really need?+

Fewer than a revision guide implies, held more securely than most students hold them. The working standard is a spine of perhaps twenty to thirty dated events for the core content and a similar number for the depth study, known well enough that the sequence never requires a pause. Precision matters where the syllabus turns on it, such as January to March 1933 in Germany, and a decade is sufficient elsewhere. What ruins a paper is not a missing date but a candidate spending exam capacity reconstructing an order.

Is Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 harder than Geography 0460?+

They are difficult in different places, which is more useful than a ranking. History asks for sustained argument under time pressure: thirty of Paper 1's sixty marks are judgement writing, and a third of the qualification is source evaluation. Geography 0460 asks for a bank of named case studies plus a procedural skills paper on a 1:25,000 map. A student who writes fluently and dislikes diagrams usually finds history easier; one who prefers defined procedures to open argument usually finds geography easier.

Does Dubai's mandatory Social Studies requirement overlap with 0470 content?+

Hardly at all, and parents frequently expect otherwise. Social Studies is a KHDA-required subject in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with its own content, its own language-of-instruction rules and separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs. Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 is an examined international qualification on the core-content option and depth study the school entered. They share a timetable rather than a syllabus, and the real interaction is competition for weekly periods, which falls on option subjects first.

Can my child take 0470 while a sibling studies a different history board?+

Yes, and it happens often in Dubai because schools make different board choices. Cambridge 0470 and the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in history are separate qualifications with different papers, different content options and different assessment structures, so the two students need separate preparation and ideally separate sessions. What does not transfer is material: a past paper from one board is of limited use for the other. What does transfer is the underlying method of evidence evaluation and causal argument.

How is a cartoon source marked in 0470?+

On the message, not the description. A candidate who narrates what is visible in the drawing sits in the lowest band. The marks go to identifying the figures and symbols, placing the cartoon in the context of its date and publication, and stating what the cartoonist wanted the reader to think. A cartoon is strong evidence of an attitude and weak evidence of factual detail, which is why provenance has to be read first. Practised deliberately, it is one of the fastest-improving question types on the paper.

Does online tutoring work for an essay subject like history?+

It works well, because the product in an essay subject is marked writing rather than physical presence. The source extract or the student's own paragraph sits on a shared screen, the annotation happens where both parties can see it, and the marked script comes back within a day or two rather than at the next visit. A teacher who is not driving across the city marks more work. For a syllabus this specific it also means the teacher can be chosen for having taught your child's exact option.

When should a Year 10 student start proper 0470 revision?+

Revision in the usual sense can wait; the dated spine cannot. From the first term of Year 10 a student should be extending a single sequence document as each key question is taught, and rehearsing it briefly rather than re-reading notes. That habit costs a few minutes a week and removes the retrieval problem that otherwise surfaces in a two-hour paper eighteen months later. Essay technique has a shorter runway and can reasonably begin once the first two key questions are complete.

Start with the three facts about your child's syllabus

Before hiring a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 online tutor in Dubai, find out three things: whether the cohort studies Option A or Option B, which of the six depth studies the school entered, and whether the last 27% comes from coursework or Paper 4. One email to the head of history produces all three, and they determine which teacher is a genuine match rather than merely available. Send those answers with the mock script, and take the free trial lesson. You will get a named teacher who has taught that option to a cohort and a written note of which of the three components the grade is actually resting on. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
