IB and IGCSE tutors for City Walk families

Searches for IB and IGCSE tutors in City Walk come disproportionately from families who arrived recently. There is no school inside the development, tenancies here are shorter than in the villa communities, and a great many children start a Dubai school part-way through a year that began without them. This page is about that specific problem: what a school will and will not re-teach, and how IB Gram closes the gap with one-to-one lessons delivered online over live video.

IB & IGCSE in City Walk

City Walk has no school, which tells you who lives here

City Walk is a low-rise district on Al Wasl Road between Jumeirah 1 and Al Safa, a grid of apartment buildings over retail streets with Coca-Cola Arena on one edge and Al Safa Park a short drive away. It was built as a walkable urban quarter rather than as a family suburb, and the housing stock shows it: a high proportion of one- and two-bedroom apartments, serviced and corporate leases alongside family tenancies, and a steady churn of arrivals and departures. The newer buildings and the central park have brought more families in, but there is still no school inside the development.

That single fact explains most of the tutoring demand from this postcode. Children here are driven or bussed out, usually to Al Safa, Jumeirah or Al Barsha, and the choice of school was frequently made in a hurry from abroad on the basis of which campus had a seat free in the right year group. A seat free in March in Year 10 is a different proposition from a place secured in the previous September, and nobody explains the difference at the point of acceptance.

The specific, practical problem of a mid-year arrival is that a school teaches a syllabus in an order, and it does not go back. A Year 10 student joining in January walks into a Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel specification one and a half terms in. The class has done the topics it has done. The teacher will support an individual as far as a full timetable allows, which is usually a conversation, a set of past topic sheets and an invitation to catch up. The content is not re-taught, and nobody is checking whether the catching up happened until a mock exam makes the answer visible.

There is a second version of this problem that is less obvious and more expensive. A student moving from an American high school, a CBSE school or a British Year 11 into a new programme does not arrive behind so much as sideways. Their prior learning does not map cleanly. An American Algebra 2 student has met functions but perhaps not formal proof; a CBSE Class 10 student has met far more trigonometry than a Cambridge 0580 student but less statistics; a British Year 11 student entering DP1 has the content but not the habit of criterion-based work. Each of those gaps is specific, nameable and closable in a known number of hours, which is the whole point of mapping them.

What follows is that map. Where City Walk children actually go to school and by which route, what has usually been taught by each common mid-year entry point, how each prior system lines up against IGCSE and the Diploma, which IGCSE content cannot be inferred and must be taught, how a short tenancy interacts with a two-year Diploma, what the Jumeirah and Al Wasl market charges in AED, and what the Ministry of Education's equivalency rules require from a family that may not stay in the UAE.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

City Walk children are spread across more systems than a single-school community would be, because the school was chosen on availability. These are the four that matter for arrivals and transfers.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four published criteria marked out of eight and converted to a grade from 1 to 7. For an arriving student the difficulty is rarely content. It is that the grade depends on strands such as investigating patterns or communicating, which are practised habits rather than knowledge, and a student arriving from a content-and-test system has never been asked to demonstrate them.

Several campuses within reach of City Walk run the Middle Years Programme, including the IB continuum schools in Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. A student joining MYP 4 or MYP 5 from an examination-based system usually needs the criteria explained explicitly in the first fortnight, not in the term the first summative task is returned.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, usually three Higher and three Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Forty-two points from the subjects and up to three from the TOK and Extended Essay matrix. Internal assessment carries 20% in the sciences and both mathematics courses. Entering DP1 late is survivable; entering DP2 late is close to impossible because the internal assessments and the Extended Essay are already in train.

For a City Walk family on a two or three year posting, the Diploma's two-year structure is the single biggest planning consideration. Transferring a Diploma student between schools mid-programme means matching six subjects at matching levels, and a school that cannot offer the same Higher Level combination forces a subject change that costs a year of content.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE at Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel

Cambridge splits most subjects into Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C and Extended running A* to E. Pearson Edexcel tiers mathematics as Foundation and Higher with a grade 9 ceiling, and runs some subjects on a modular basis where units can be sat in different series. Those structural differences decide what a mid-year arrival has missed and whether any of it can be sat later.

Ask the admissions office two questions at the point of accepting a seat: which board the subject is entered with, and which topics the class has already completed. The second question is the one nobody asks and the one that determines how many hours of catch-up the next three months contain.

ALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level, as the post-16 alternative

Three or four linear subjects with no core, assessed almost entirely through terminal written papers. For a transferring family the advantage is portability within the British system and the smaller number of components to match. The disadvantage is depth: a student arriving into the second year of a linear A Level has missed content that is examined in full at the end and never revisited in class.

Several schools reachable from City Walk offer A Level alongside or instead of the Diploma. For a family unsure of how long they will stay, the question worth asking is which route the next likely destination recognises most easily, because that decision is easier to make at sixteen than to unwind at seventeen.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects that cause the most difficulty for arriving students, with the specific gap each one tends to contain rather than a general description of the course.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580 and 0607)

Core and Extended

Cambridge 0580 and the International Mathematics syllabus 0607 are different courses with different papers, and 0607 includes an investigation component that 0580 does not. An arriving student entered for the wrong one in their head will practise the wrong papers for a term. Confirm the code, not the subject name.

Mathematics (Pearson Edexcel 4MA1)

Foundation and Higher

Two papers, calculator permitted in both, tiered Foundation and Higher with a grade 9 ceiling on Higher. Students arriving from systems with a non-calculator tradition often over-rely on written methods and lose time. The content order differs from Cambridge, so a mid-year transfer between the two boards creates gaps in both directions.

Physics

IGCSE and IB HL/SL

Cambridge 0625 assesses practical skills through either a practical test or a written alternative paper, and which one a school enters for changes how the laboratory work matters. At Diploma level the gap for arrivals is uncertainty handling and graph interpretation for gradient meaning, neither of which most prior systems assess.

Chemistry

IGCSE and IB HL/SL

The quantitative core, moles, concentration and yield, is where arriving students most often sit behind, because the amount of calculation expected varies widely between systems. At Diploma level the scientific investigation carries 20% at both levels and is marked on design, analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and arrivals rarely have a comparable prior task.

Biology

IGCSE and IB HL/SL

Content-dense and decided by command terms. Students who come from a system that rewards complete answers tend to over-write short questions and run out of time. The statistical treatment expected in a Diploma investigation is a specific and teachable gap for anyone arriving from a double award science background.

English as a first or second language

Cambridge 0500, 0510 and 0511

Schools sometimes place an arriving bilingual student in the wrong route. First Language English and English as a Second Language are different specifications with different papers, and some sixth forms set First Language as the entry requirement for literature courses. This decision is far easier to get right in Year 9 or at the point of entry than in Year 11.

Economics and Business Studies

IGCSE 0455, 0450 and IB SL/HL

Usually new subjects for an arriving student, which is an advantage: there is no prior learning to unpick. The marks are decided by diagram accuracy, correct axis labelling and giving a justified recommendation where the question asks for one rather than a list of advantages and disadvantages.

Arabic as an additional language

Mandatory stream and Cambridge 0544

Every student in a Dubai private school takes Arabic regardless of curriculum, and an arriving non-Arabic speaker joins a class that has been running for years. The realistic aim in the first year is script fluency and core vocabulary rather than parity with the class, and support has to work from the school's own material.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478 and IB SL/HL

Cambridge 0478 separates theory from practical problem-solving, and the programming element is where students arriving from block-based environments struggle hardest. At Diploma level the internal assessment is a developed solution whose documentation carries much of the mark, so planning on paper before coding is the habit worth installing early.

History and Geography

IGCSE and IB HL/SL

Both depend on named, specific evidence rather than general narrative, and arrivals frequently bring strong general knowledge with no case-study discipline. IGCSE geography answers lose marks without a named place and a named figure; Diploma history rests on comparative argument and a historical investigation with a strict word limit.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover the arrival problem, and the right one depends on how far into a course the student is joining rather than on how able they are. All run online over live video with one named tutor.

Catch-up block against a named topic list

A finite set of sessions aimed at specific syllabus topics the class has already covered. The list comes from the school, not from us, and the block ends when the list is closed. This is the right format for a Year 9 or Year 10 arrival and the wrong one for a student who is simply finding a subject hard.

  • Topic list obtained from the school before the first session
  • Sessions ordered by what the next assessment needs first
  • A short check at the end of each topic, marked
  • Fixed number of sessions, with a stated finish point

Transition bridging between systems

For a student moving from an American, Indian or other national system into IGCSE or the Diploma. The work is mapping rather than teaching: identifying what transfers, what is missing and what has to be unlearned, then closing the named gaps in a known number of hours before the first internal assessment.

  • Prior transcript or report read before the first session
  • A written gap list the parent can see
  • Different assessment habits taught explicitly, not assumed
  • Finishes when the gap list is closed

Weekly subject teaching

One tutor, one subject, one board and level, on a fixed weekly slot. Appropriate once the arrival gap is closed and the issue is ongoing performance rather than missed content. It builds a record across a term that a parent can hold against the school's own reporting.

  • Same tutor weekly, named before the first paid session
  • Syllabus code confirmed with the school first
  • A written note after each session
  • Slot moved by message when something clashes

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in City Walk

01

Where City Walk children actually go to school

Because the development contains no school, every family here has made a decision about which direction to travel in, and the answers cluster rather than scatter. The nearest cluster is Al Safa and Al Wasl, a few minutes away outside peak hours, which absorbs a large share of primary and lower-secondary placements. The next ring is Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim along the coast, where several all-through campuses and the area's IB continuum provision sit. The third is Al Barsha and Al Quoz inland, which is where families end up when the first two rings are full in the year group they need.

Journey time matters here more than distance, and not in the way a map suggests. Al Wasl Road is quick at ten in the morning and slow at both ends of the school day. The junctions around Al Safa queue, and the Sheikh Zayed Road crossings towards Al Barsha are unreliable enough that families with children at those campuses treat any weekday arrangement before five in the afternoon as optimistic. That is a scheduling fact rather than a complaint, and it is why the first question about an evening session should be when the child is actually through the door.

The table below sets out the schools City Walk families most commonly use, grouped by cluster, with the board or programme each follows and the realistic route. It is included because the mid-year arrival conversation always starts with the same misunderstanding: that the choice of school settles the curriculum question. It does not. A school in the same street as another may enter its students with a different board, offer a different post-16 route and run on a different internal deadline calendar, and all three of those shape what tutoring is for.

Arriving mid-year: what the school will not re-teach

A school teaches a specification in an order and moves forward. That is the correct way to run a class of thirty and it is the whole of the arriving student's problem. A child joining in January has not been taught the first half of the year, and the class will not revisit it, because doing so would penalise everybody else. What the student will be offered is a conversation, access to past topic materials, and the goodwill of a teacher with a full timetable. That is not neglect. It is simply not sufficient on its own.

The gap is also invisible for a while, which is the dangerous part. An arriving student does well enough on current topics, because those are being taught now, and the missing earlier material does not surface until a cumulative assessment or a mock. By then it is often two or three months of content, there is less time left, and the student has acquired the belief that they are weak at the subject rather than that they missed six weeks of it. Separating those two explanations early is one of the most useful things a tutor does for a City Walk family.

The table below names what has typically already been taught at the common entry points, in general terms rather than school-specific ones, and how many hours of focused work the gap usually represents. The hours are indicative and assume one-to-one work on a topic list obtained from the school. Ask the admissions office or the head of year for that list in writing at the point of accepting the place; it is a reasonable request and almost nobody makes it.

Mapping a prior system onto IGCSE or the Diploma

Families moving into Dubai from another system are usually told their child will adapt, which is true and unhelpful. Adaptation has content. A student arriving from an American high school has typically met functions, probability and a good deal of statistics, and may not have met formal proof or the algebraic manipulation speed a Cambridge Extended paper assumes. A student from a CBSE background often arrives with stronger trigonometry and weaker data handling than their new classmates, and with a writing style built for complete answers rather than for command terms with mark allocations attached.

The reverse direction has its own pattern. A British Year 11 student entering DP1 has the content and lacks the habit: nothing in GCSE or IGCSE requires a criterion-based piece of independent work, so the exploration and the Extended Essay are genuinely new activities rather than harder versions of familiar ones. A Middle Years student moving into a British sixth form has the independent habits and may lack specific examined content, particularly in mathematics where the Diploma and A Level diverge early.

None of this is mysterious once it is written down, and writing it down is the job. The table below maps the five transitions we see most often from this part of Dubai, with the gap that genuinely matters in each and roughly how long it takes to close with focused one-to-one work. The point of the table is to turn a vague worry into a finite list, because a finite list can be finished and a vague worry cannot.

The option block you inherit, and the content you cannot infer

  • Ask what the option-block constraint is: a room, a teacher or a rule
  • Cambridge 0580 and 0607 are different courses, not variants
  • Cambridge 0625 physics may use a practical test or a written alternative
  • Get the code, the tier and the practical arrangement in writing

A mid-year arrival does not choose their options; they inherit them. The school fits the new student into the blocks that have space, which may mean a subject nobody in the family would have selected and the absence of one that mattered. This is worth raising early rather than accepting silently, because a block that looks fixed in February is sometimes movable in April, and because the alternative is two years of a subject chosen by a timetable. Ask what the constraint actually is, and whether it is a room, a teacher or a rule.

There is also content in these syllabuses that a bright student cannot work out from first principles, and this is where arriving families most often misjudge what tutoring is needed for. Cambridge 0580 and the International Mathematics syllabus 0607 are different courses, and 0607 includes an investigation component that 0580 does not have at all. Cambridge physics 0625 assesses practical skills either through a practical test or through a written alternative paper, and which route the school has entered changes what laboratory experience matters. Pearson Edexcel runs some subjects modularly, where units can be sat in different series, which occasionally gives an arriving student an option a linear course would not.

The practical instruction is narrow and it matters: get the syllabus code from the school in writing, together with the tier where one exists and the practical arrangement where one applies. Cambridge 0580 Extended, Cambridge 0607, Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 Higher and Pearson Edexcel 4MB1 are all called IGCSE Maths in conversation, and a tutor working from the wrong one does accurate teaching against a specification the student will never sit. That mistake costs more in a catch-up situation than in any other, because there is no slack to absorb it.

05

A short tenancy against a two-year Diploma

City Walk leases are frequently shorter than the programmes its teenagers are enrolled in, and that mismatch is a real planning problem rather than a theoretical one. The Diploma is a two-year structure in which six subjects, their levels, the Extended Essay subject and the internal assessment work are all locked in early. Moving a Diploma student between schools means finding a school that offers the same six subjects at the same levels, and a single mismatch in a Higher Level subject forces a change that can cost most of a year's content.

IGCSE is more forgiving but not free. Boards differ, entry deadlines sit months before the papers, and a student who moves between Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel part-way through Year 10 arrives with content gaps running in both directions. The modular structure some Pearson Edexcel subjects use occasionally helps here, because units already sat can count, but that depends entirely on what was entered and when. A family who may move should ask about board and entry structure before accepting a place rather than after.

The table below sets out the scenarios we see from this postcode and what reduces the damage in each. Two general rules emerge from it. First, decisions that are cheap to make early become expensive to make late, which argues for asking awkward questions at the point of admission. Second, an online tutoring arrangement survives a move in a way a local one does not: the same tutor, the same slot and the same plan continue from a new city, which for a transient household is a practical advantage rather than a marketing line.

What tutoring costs in the Jumeirah and Al Wasl corridor

Catch-up tutoring is bought in blocks rather than open-endedly, so the useful number for a City Walk family is not only the hourly rate but what a block costs in total. The table below gives published Dubai market bands per hour, the monthly figure at one session a week, and who published each number. These are market rates surveyed in October 2026 from published platform and agency rate pages and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. They are not an IB Gram price list and no figure here is a quote.

For a catch-up block the arithmetic is straightforward and worth doing before committing. A Year 10 arrival with sixteen to twenty-four hours of gap in one examined subject, at the qualified subject tutor band, is a defined and finite cost; the same gap left to surface in a Year 11 mock becomes two subjects and a longer programme. Published package offers in this market include around AED 799 per month online for eight sessions, and published monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work.

Three questions to ask any provider, including us, before paying anything. Is the figure per hour or per session, and how long is a session. Does it include VAT, and will that be stated on the invoice. What happens to a prepaid balance if you stop after one lesson or leave the country. For context on the wider household budget, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under an economic incentives package the emirate valued at AED 1.5 billion, which makes the tutoring line the variable one this year.

Equivalency for a family that may not stay

A mobile family has one extra piece of paperwork to understand, and almost no competing page in this market mentions it. UAE Ministry of Education equivalency is the process by which a foreign secondary qualification is recognised for use here, and it matters if a child might apply to a UAE university, or if the family stays longer than the current posting. It is a Ministry process. No tutoring provider performs it, guarantees it or speeds it up, and anyone suggesting otherwise should be treated with scepticism.

The British-track requirements, as reported in July 2026, are specific. A student must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, and either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five required subjects, which is a detail at least one ranking competitor gets wrong by stating that six subjects are required. For the American track, English proficiency is shown by a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and mathematics requires at least 450 in SAT Math.

For the IB Diploma this page deliberately publishes no points threshold, because the figures circulating online could not be verified against the Ministry's own pages during research for this project. Check moe.gov.ae or the relevant attestation authority directly. The practical advice for a City Walk family is unglamorous: keep every statement of results, keep certificates rather than photographs of them, and begin the attestation conversation in the term before leaving rather than from the next country.

Why these searches say home tutor, and what is actually delivered

Parents who have just moved countries search for a home tutor because it is the arrangement they know. In most of the world a tutor arrives, sits down and works through the material, and after a relocation there is real comfort in a known quantity. In a City Walk apartment there is also a practical argument: the flat is small, the family may not yet have a car, and having somebody come to the building removes a journey from a week that already contains too many.

The honest market picture is this. Published in-home rates in Dubai run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, with the tutor's travel inside that figure, against AED 200 to 450 for an online subject specialist. The people available to visit are those willing to drive into the Al Wasl corridor in the evening, which skews towards generalists rather than specialists in a particular board and level. And a catch-up block is the case where specialisation matters most, because the work is closing a named list of topics from a specific specification rather than general support with homework.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home visits are a service we provide only in India, and nobody will be sent to a City Walk address. Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, with screen sharing for past papers and a document camera for written working. For a family who may move again, that has a side benefit that matters more than it sounds: the arrangement is portable. The same tutor and slot continue from the next city, which is not true of anybody who had to drive to the building.

Starting from City Walk, with the limits and the rules stated

The first message should contain facts rather than worries: the school, the year group, the board and syllabus code, the term the child joined, and the topic list from the school if you have been able to get it. If you have a transcript or report from the previous system, send it, because the gap map is built from that document more than from anything a first session can reveal. We then name the tutor, where they are based and what they have taught at that level, before any payment, and a trial session follows at a time set around the actual arrival home.

Two sets of limits are worth stating in advance. Coverage is uneven in narrow Higher Level subjects, in less common languages and in uncommon Pearson Edexcel options, and the honest answer is one of three things: a different hour where the right specialist is free, an adjacent board or level where the overlap is real and the gap can be named, or a plain statement that we cannot cover it. Timing is the other limit. A Year 11 arrival one term before a series, with most of a specification missing, is a triage exercise and we will describe it as one rather than sell a programme that cannot work.

On assessed work the rule does not bend. An internal assessment, an Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay must be the student's own work, authenticated by a school supervisor and declared by the school; a malpractice finding falls on the student. A tutor teaches the criteria, reads a draft the student produced and gives written feedback on it, and asks the questions that expose a method the student cannot yet explain. Nobody here authors any part of a submission, and we do not hand over board syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes, because those belong to the boards and the official source is the right place to get them.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around City Walk

City Walk sits in the middle of the Jumeirah and Al Wasl school corridor, and the practical distinction between its neighbours is journey time at half past three in the afternoon.

Al Safa 1 and Al Safa 2

Immediately inland across Al Wasl Road, and where a large share of City Walk children are schooled. Journeys are short in distance and unpredictable in time, because the Al Wasl and Al Safa junctions queue heavily at both ends of the school day.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

The coastal strip running north-west, with several primary and all-through British and IB campuses. Low-rise and villa stock, long-settled families, and school waiting lists that explain why so many City Walk arrivals end up at a campus further out.

Al Wasl

The corridor City Walk effectively belongs to, running from Jumeirah towards Al Safa Park. Sports clubs, clinics and after-school activity providers concentrate here, which is the real competitor for a weekday evening study slot.

Umm Suqeim

Further along the coast, home to several large all-through campuses including IB continuum provision. The run from City Walk is quick on Al Wasl Road outside peak and considerably slower on Jumeirah Beach Road at the wrong hour.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

A short hop inland, with apartment-living families on similarly short tenancies and the same mid-year arrival pattern. Several City Walk households have an older child at a campus reached through this side of the city.

Al Barsha and Al Quoz

Where several of the larger campuses and most of the city's tuition centres sit. The eastbound run along Sheikh Zayed Road at five in the afternoon is the reason in-home evening arrangements in this corridor rarely start on time.

La Mer and Pearl Jumeira

Coastal developments near City Walk with the same short-lease profile and no schools of their own. Families here and in City Walk frequently share school routes, buses and the same question about how long they will be in Dubai.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in City Walk

Al Safa and Al Wasl campuses

The closest cluster to City Walk, reached in minutes outside peak hours and considerably longer at the school gates. A mixture of British-curriculum primaries and all-through schools, which is where most mid-year Year 7 to Year 10 placements from this postcode land.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Barsha campuses

The wider ring that absorbs City Walk children when the nearer schools are full, including IB continuum provision and several large all-through campuses. Bus routes from this postcode to these schools set the earliest workable weekday session time.

Schools are named purely as local context for families comparing routes, boards and entry points. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from or contract with any school, school group, regulator or examination board mentioned here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the school, the term of entry and the board

The three facts that determine everything else. A Year 10 student who joined in January on a Cambridge entry has a different problem from one who joined in September on a Pearson Edexcel entry, even in the same subject at the same school. Add the syllabus code from the entry confirmation if you have it.

  2. 02

Get the topic list from the school in writing

Ask the head of year or the subject teacher which topics the class has already completed. This is a reasonable request that almost nobody makes, and it converts a vague fear of being behind into a finite list. The list becomes the plan, and the block ends when the list is closed.

  3. 03

We name the tutor before anything is paid

You are told who would teach, where they are based, which board and level they cover and what they have taught at it. If nobody suitable is free at the hour your child is actually home, you hear that rather than being matched to a generalist working against the wrong specification.

  4. 04

A written gap map after the first session

For a transition case the first session is diagnostic and produces a written list: what transfers from the previous system, what is missing, what has to be unlearned, and the order it will be worked in. For a catch-up block it produces a sequence against the school's topic list with an estimated number of hours.

  5. 05

    Close the block and stop

A catch-up block has an end. When the topic list is closed, the sensible question is whether weekly teaching is still needed or whether the student is now simply in the class like everybody else. We will say which we think it is. Rolling arrangements that nobody reviews are how tutoring becomes an unexamined line in a household budget.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Built around the arrival problem

Most tutoring in this market is sold as ongoing support. A City Walk family usually needs something finite: a named list of topics the class covered before the child landed, closed in a known number of hours. That is a different product, it has an end point, and it should be priced and planned as a block.

Specification accuracy over proximity

Cambridge 0580, Cambridge 0607, Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 and Pearson Edexcel 4MB1 are all called IGCSE Maths in conversation. A catch-up block has no slack to absorb a tutor working from the wrong papers, which is why we ask for the code, the tier and the practical arrangement before teaching starts.

Portable across a move

Tenancies here are often shorter than the programmes the children are enrolled in. Because lessons are delivered online over live video, the same tutor, the same slot and the same plan continue from a new city. An arrangement that depended on somebody driving to the building ends at the airport.

Equivalency and paperwork explained, not performed

The Ministry of Education's equivalency requirements for the British and American tracks are set out on this page with the detail one ranking competitor gets wrong. We describe the process and point to the official channel. No tutoring provider performs equivalency or attestation, and none should imply that tutoring is required for it.

Stated limits on coverage and on timing

Some subjects are thinly covered and some arrivals are too late in the course for the work to succeed. You get the real position first, including a plain no, rather than a programme that looks like a solution. A Year 11 arrival one term from a series will be described as triage, because that is what it is.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in City Walk: your questions answered

Which school should we choose if we live in City Walk?+

There is no school inside the development, so every family here chooses a direction. The nearest cluster is Al Safa and Al Wasl, which absorbs most primary and lower-secondary placements and is a few minutes away outside peak hours. The next ring is Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim along the coast, including the area's IB continuum provision. Al Barsha and Al Quoz inland is where families land when the closer schools are full in the required year group. Journey time at half past three, not distance on a map, is the figure that should decide it.

My child joined Year 10 in January. How far behind are they really?+

Usually a third to a half of the IGCSE specification in each examined subject, which is roughly sixteen to twenty-four hours of focused one-to-one work per subject. The important point is that it will not feel like that for months: current topics are being taught now, so performance looks acceptable until a cumulative assessment or a mock exposes the earlier material. Ask the school in writing which topics the class has already completed. That list turns an open-ended worry into a finite piece of work with an end point.

Will the school re-teach what my child missed before they arrived?+

No, and it should not be expected to. A class of thirty moves forward through a specification in order, and going back would penalise everybody else. What a school reasonably offers is a conversation, access to past topic materials and the goodwill of a teacher with a full timetable. That is genuine support and it is not sufficient on its own for two terms of missed content. The gap closes through one-to-one work against the school's own topic list, which is exactly the job a catch-up block is for.

We are moving from an American high school into the IB Diploma. What transfers?+

More than families expect on content and less than they expect on habits. Functions, probability and statistics usually transfer well, as do coursework culture and research skills. The real gaps are command terms and criterion-based marking: a Diploma paper awards marks calibrated to whether it asked you to state, explain, discuss or evaluate, and an American transcript rarely reflects practice at that. Formal proof and non-calculator algebraic speed are the other common gaps. Six to ten weeks of focused work before the first internal assessment usually closes the set.

How does CBSE compare with IGCSE for a child arriving mid-year?+

A CBSE student typically arrives with stronger trigonometry, mechanics and calculation fluency than their new classmates and weaker data handling and extended written answers. The writing style is the bigger adjustment: CBSE rewards complete answers, while IGCSE allocates marks to command terms, so a full paragraph on a two-mark state question earns nothing and costs time elsewhere. Eight to twelve weeks of one-to-one work on data handling, structured written responses and timed paper technique is the usual requirement, and the mathematics content gap is often smaller than the family fears.

What is the difference between Cambridge 0580 and 0607 maths?+

They are different courses rather than variants of one. Cambridge 0580 is the mainstream International Mathematics route, split into Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C. Cambridge 0607 is International Mathematics with a different content emphasis and an investigation component that 0580 does not contain at all. A student entered for one and practising past papers from the other is doing accurate work against a specification they will never sit, which matters most in a catch-up situation where there is no slack. Get the code in writing from the school.

Can a tutor come to our apartment in City Walk?+

Not through us. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service runs only in India. Tuition for City Walk families is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, with screen sharing for past papers and a document camera for written working. Published Dubai market rates for an in-home visit run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with the tutor's travel inside the fee, against AED 200 to 450 for an online specialist. For catch-up work the specialist match matters more than physical presence, because the task is a named topic list from a specific specification.

How much does a catch-up block cost in this part of Dubai?+

Work from the hours rather than the hourly rate. Published Dubai market bands, surveyed October 2026, put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to 300 an hour and an IB or IGCSE specialist at AED 200 to 450 or more; generalists are quoted from AED 45 to 150 and in-home visits at AED 180 to 500 with travel included. A Year 10 arrival needing sixteen to twenty-four hours in one subject is therefore a finite, calculable cost. Those figures come from published platform and agency rate pages and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table.

Our posting may end during the Diploma. What should we decide now?+

Choose a subject combination at DP1 selection that other schools commonly offer, because moving a Diploma student means matching six subjects at matching levels and a single mismatch in a Higher Level subject can cost most of a year's content. Keep the Extended Essay in a widely taught subject for the same reason. And because lessons here are delivered online, a tutoring arrangement continues from the next city with the same tutor and slot, which removes one variable from a move that will already contain plenty.

What does my child need for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

On the British track, as reported in July 2026, five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no lower than grade E or grade 3, plus either one accredited Advanced Level subject at E or better or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five, and one ranking competitor incorrectly states six subjects are needed. For the American track, English proficiency is shown by IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT 450 in reading and writing, with SAT Math at 450 or above. Verify current requirements on moe.gov.ae.

Can we change the option block our child was placed into?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking what the constraint actually is. A mid-year arrival is fitted into the blocks that have space, which can mean a subject nobody would have chosen and the absence of one that mattered. Ask whether the obstacle is a room, a teacher or a rule, because the first two sometimes change at the start of a new term and the third does not. Raise it in the first weeks rather than in the following year, when an inherited choice has become two years of a subject selected by a timetable.

Is online tutoring a problem if our apartment is small and busy?+

It is manageable with three cheap decisions made once. Over-ear headphones with a boom microphone so the student can be heard without competing with the room. A wired connection or the 5 GHz band rather than whatever the laptop joins by default. A second phone or tablet propped as a document camera so the tutor sees the working rather than the face, which changes mathematics and physics sessions more than any other single thing. A one-bedroom apartment with those three in place works better than a study with none of them.

Does a private tutor in Dubai need a permit, and can we check it?+

Yes to the permit. Private tutoring in the UAE operates under a work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with eligibility covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications are made through MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing, via the smart app, website or e-services system. Tutoring without one brings fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule has been published, so treat quoted amounts sceptically.

Is it too late to start if the exam series is one term away?+

It depends on what is missing rather than on the calendar alone. A student with most of a specification in place who is losing marks in execution can gain a great deal in a term, because timed papers marked against the published mark scheme move grades faster than anything else at that stage. A Year 11 arrival with most of a specification never taught is a triage exercise: choose the subjects where the return is highest, confirm the entries and tiers with the school immediately, and accept that not everything can be rescued. We will say which case you are in.

Turn the worry into a list

The useful next step for a City Walk family is to get one document: the list of topics the class has already covered. Send that, with the school, the year group and the syllabus code, and you will get back the name of someone who teaches that exact specification and an estimate of how many hours the gap represents. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video, and they continue from wherever you are if the posting moves. If the honest answer is that the timing makes the job triage rather than catch-up, you will hear that first rather than after four paid sessions.
