IGCSE Maths Tutor in City Walk

An IGCSE maths tutor in City Walk is almost never needed for the whole subject. The problem is usually two or three strands and one paper. This page works through Cambridge 0580, Cambridge 0607 and Pearson 4MA1 by paper and by topic, names the mark-scheme traps that cost a grade, and explains how a City Walk student gets a specialist for that specific gap over live one-to-one video.

  • Matched by syllabus code: 0580, 0607 and 4MA1 are three different examinations
  • Past-paper questions marked to the published scheme, with method marks itemised
  • AED rates below are other providers' published figures, each one attributed

IB & IGCSE in City Walk

The maths gap is usually narrower than the report card suggests

A Year 10 or Year 11 maths grade is a single number covering nine or ten distinct content strands and two separate papers. When that number drops, the instinct is to treat the whole subject as the problem. Marked papers almost never support that reading. Open a mock script and the lost marks cluster: algebraic manipulation under time, a trigonometry strand that was taught in a short half-term, probability questions involving conditional reasoning, and the method marks forfeited by writing only a final answer on a calculator paper.

That clustering is good news, because it is addressable in a term rather than over two years. It also explains why a general tutor can work for months with little visible change. If the student's difficulty is that they cannot rearrange a formula with a fraction in it quickly enough to finish Paper 4, more revision of statistics will not help. The diagnosis has to come first, and it comes from a marked paper rather than from a predicted grade.

Which paper matters as much as which topic. Cambridge 0580 Extended candidates sit a non-calculator Paper 2 and a calculator Paper 4; Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3. Cambridge 0607 International Mathematics requires a graphics calculator and exists mainly to feed the IB. Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 Higher allows a calculator on both papers, which pushes the difficulty into long multi-step problems. A student who has been practising on whichever past papers were easiest to find online may have been practising the wrong examination.

Timing decides how much of that narrowing is still possible. A UAE candidate sits the June series or the November series, so the useful question in any given month is how many teaching weeks are left before the paper and whether the entry has already been filed. Entries for June close in the spring, months ahead of the first paper, which is also when the Foundation or Core decision hardens. A gap identified in Year 10 is a term of work; the same gap found after the entry is locked is a different, smaller conversation about squeezing marks out of the tier the student is already in.

City Walk sits a short drive from Jumeirah College, Safa British School, Horizon English School and Jumeirah Baccalaureate School, so families here have no shortage of good schools. What a school cannot easily give a student is forty minutes a week of somebody watching their algebra and correcting the specific habit that is costing them method marks. That is what one-to-one is for, and it is the only thing it is reliably good at.

IB Gram delivers this over live video, one-to-one, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. No tutor comes to a City Walk address: in-home visits are a service IB Gram runs in India only. What a City Walk family gets instead is somebody who teaches their child's exact specification, which for Additional Mathematics 0606 or Edexcel Further Pure is close to impossible to find within a twenty-minute drive of Al Safa Street.

At a glance

  • 0580 Extended sits Paper 2 without a calculator and Paper 4 with one
  • 0607 International Mathematics requires a graphics calculator and is not interchangeable with 0580
  • Pearson 4MA1 Higher allows a calculator on both Paper 1H and Paper 2H
  • Method marks are awarded for working, and are the commonest avoidable loss
  • UAE candidates sit the June and November series, not the India-only February series
  • Lessons run online over live video; there are no UAE home visits

Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics

The years in which algebraic fluency is either built or not. Cambridge runs Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Nothing here is externally reported to universities, which is exactly why it is the cheapest place to fix a gap: there is no grade at stake and plenty of time.

Dubai schools commonly fix the Core or Extended set in Year 9 using Lower Secondary performance. A City Walk family who wants the Extended tier kept available should be looking at Year 9 marks rather than waiting for the Year 10 report, because by then the set allocation has usually happened.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

Two tiers, four papers, two sat per candidate. Core sits Paper 1 and Paper 3; Extended sits Paper 2 and Paper 4. Paper 2 is the non-calculator Extended paper and is where arithmetic and algebraic fluency are tested without a safety net. The grade range available differs by tier, so the tier decision has a ceiling attached.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own timetable version, and states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask your school's exams officer which zone it sits in. UAE candidates sit the June series, with November as the resit route.

0607Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics

A separate syllabus designed to feed the IB, requiring a graphics calculator and, on some routes, an investigation paper. The content overlaps 0580 heavily but the skills emphasis differs: more graphical interpretation, more use of technology, less unaided manipulation.

This is the single most common source of a late unpleasant surprise in Dubai. 0607 is not treated as interchangeable with 0580 for A Level Mathematics entry at many sixth forms. A student heading for A Level rather than the Diploma should confirm the sixth form's stated requirement before the Year 10 option form is signed.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Foundation and Higher tiers, two papers each, calculator permitted throughout at Higher. Questions tend to run longer with less scaffolding than their Cambridge equivalents, which rewards structured working and punishes students who try to hold a multi-step problem in their head.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables, so open the live official one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE Mathematics is examined across these content strands. The notes say what each strand assesses and where the marks leak, because a tutoring plan should be written in this vocabulary rather than in terms of the subject as a whole.

Number

Core and Extended

Standard form, surds at Extended, upper and lower bounds, percentage change in reverse. Bounds questions are the recurring loss: students calculate a bound correctly and then use the wrong one in the following step, which costs the accuracy mark while keeping the method mark.

Algebra and graphs

Core and Extended

The heaviest strand at Extended and the one that decides the grade. Rearranging formulae with fractions, algebraic fractions, simultaneous equations with one quadratic, and inequalities. Most non-calculator paper losses trace back to here rather than to anything exotic.

Functions

Extended

Composite and inverse functions in function notation. Students who can do the arithmetic lose marks on notation: fg(x) and gf(x) answered in the wrong order is a full-mark loss on a question the student understood.

Coordinate geometry

Core and Extended

Gradients, parallel and perpendicular lines, the equation of a line through two points. A short strand with reliable marks, which makes it one of the best returns on a single tutoring session for a student who has simply never consolidated it.

Geometry and angle reasoning

Core and Extended

Circle theorems, congruence, similarity and polygon angle properties. The marks require a named reason, not just a correct number. Students who write the angle and skip the justification lose roughly half the available marks on a typical multi-step geometry question.

Mensuration

Core and Extended

Area, surface area and volume including cones, spheres and composite solids. Formula selection under pressure is the issue; so is premature rounding, which quietly destroys an otherwise correct three-step volume calculation.

Trigonometry

Core and Extended

Right-angled trigonometry, then the sine and cosine rules and non-right-angled area at Extended. Three-dimensional trigonometry and bearings generate the most requests, usually because the topic was taught in a compressed half-term.

Vectors and transformations

Core and Extended

Column vectors, vector geometry proofs at Extended, and the four transformations with full descriptions. A transformation described without its centre, scale factor or mirror line is an incomplete answer, and the mark scheme treats it as such.

Probability

Core and Extended

Tree diagrams, combined events and conditional probability at Extended. Conditional questions are where good students lose marks, because they compute the branch correctly and then divide by the wrong denominator.

Statistics

Core and Extended

Averages from grouped data, cumulative frequency, histograms with unequal class widths. Histogram frequency density is reliably the single most mishandled calculation in the whole syllabus, and it is fixable in one focused session.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Extended only

Taken alongside 0580 by strong mathematicians and thinly staffed in most schools. The local tutor pool for it within a short drive of City Walk is effectively empty, which makes it the clearest case on this page for online matching.

Mathematics for the Diploma route

Post-16 preparation

Preparation for Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation. The gap between Extended IGCSE and Analysis and Approaches Higher Level is proof, rigour and unaided algebra, and it is far wider than most Year 11 students expect.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Maths support from City Walk takes one of three shapes, and the right one depends on how far the student is from their next paper. All three run over live video with the student writing on a shared whiteboard.

Strand repair, weekly

One hour a week on a named content strand, worked until it is secure under timed conditions rather than until it has been covered. Used for the student whose marked paper shows losses concentrated in two or three strands, which is the most common diagnosis from a Year 10 mock.

  • Starts from the marked paper, not from the syllabus order
  • Questions set between sessions and returned marked with method marks itemised
  • Each strand closed with a timed set at the full paper tariff
  • Re-matched at no charge if the first lesson does not work

Paper technique block

Short, intensive work on the mechanics of the specific paper: non-calculator fluency for 0580 Paper 2, extended multi-step structure for 4MA1, graphics-calculator discipline for 0607. Content is assumed and technique is the target, so this suits a student who understands the maths and underperforms on the paper.

  • Mark-per-minute pacing enforced with a timer from the first session
  • Working written out in full so method marks are available
  • Rounding and units discipline drilled until it is automatic
  • Full timed papers under conditions in the final weeks

Tier or route decision support

A short diagnostic block for a family deciding between Core and Extended, between 0580 and 0607, or between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation after Year 11. Produces an evidence-based recommendation rather than a general opinion.

  • Timed paper at both tiers where that is practical
  • Audit of the content the student would need to catch up on
  • The sixth form's stated entry requirement checked before any advice is given
  • A written recommendation the family can take to the school

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in City Walk

01

Cambridge 0580: four papers, two sat, one tier decision

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is examined through four papers, of which each candidate sits two. Core candidates sit Paper 1 and Paper 3. Extended candidates sit Paper 2 and Paper 4. The split matters because Paper 2 is the non-calculator Extended paper, and it tests something the rest of the course does not: arithmetic and algebraic manipulation with nothing to lean on.

A student can be comfortable across the whole syllabus and still lose heavily on Paper 2, because a graphics or scientific calculator has been quietly compensating for weak fractional arithmetic and weak surd handling for two years. That weakness is invisible in classwork and brutal in an examination hall. It is also one of the most repairable things in the subject, given a term and consistent daily practice of the right kind.

The tier choice carries a grade ceiling. Core sits a defined subset of the syllabus and the top grades are not available on those papers, however well a student performs. Extended covers the full content including Extended-only topics and offers the full range. Dubai schools typically fix this in Year 9 or early Year 10, which is why a family who cares about the sixth-form route needs to be in that conversation before it is settled.

Confirm the paper structure against the current syllabus rather than against an older sibling's experience, because Cambridge revises syllabuses on a cycle and the published document for your child's examination year is the authority. The table below is the indicative pattern as schools currently teach it.

0607 International Mathematics is a different syllabus, not an easier one

  • 0607 requires a graphics calculator and leans on graphical interpretation
  • 0580 Extended tests unaided algebra on a non-calculator paper
  • Many A Level Mathematics courses specify 0580 or 4MA1 rather than 0607
  • Confirm the sixth-form requirement in writing before the Year 10 option form is signed

Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics 0607 exists to feed the IB Diploma. It requires a graphics calculator throughout and, on some routes, includes an investigation paper. The content overlaps 0580 substantially, so a parent reading two syllabus lists side by side can easily conclude they are interchangeable. They are not, and the difference is in skills rather than in topics.

0607 asks for more graphical interpretation and more use of technology to explore a relationship, and less unaided manipulation. A student who has spent two years on 0607 arrives at Analysis and Approaches Higher Level with good calculator fluency and, frequently, weak algebra done by hand. A student who has spent two years on 0580 Extended arrives with the opposite profile. Neither is wrong; they are different starting points and they need different bridging work.

The practical consequence shows up at sixth-form application. Many A Level Mathematics courses in Dubai state a required grade in 0580 or 4MA1 specifically, and do not accept 0607 as equivalent. A Year 11 student who chose 0607 in Year 9 because the school recommended it for the Diploma, and then changed their mind about the Diploma, can find that the A Level door needs an extra conversation to open.

This is a question to settle at the option form, not in Year 11. Ask the sixth form you are likely to apply to what they require, in writing, and keep the answer. Tutoring can bridge a gap in content; it cannot retrospectively change which syllabus a student was entered for.

03

Pearson 4MA1: both Higher papers allow a calculator

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A, code 4MA1, runs Foundation and Higher tiers with two papers each. At Higher, both Paper 1H and Paper 2H permit a calculator. Removing the non-calculator paper does not make the qualification easier; it moves the difficulty. With arithmetic handled by the machine, the examiner has room to ask longer questions with more steps and less scaffolding.

The practical consequence is that 4MA1 rewards structured written working more than its Cambridge counterpart does. A five-mark problem that requires three linked calculations is a routine Higher question, and a student who works it out on the calculator and writes one number down has thrown away the method marks for a correct piece of mathematics. Teaching that habit is dull and it is the highest-return hour available to a 4MA1 student.

Students transferring between the two boards mid-course are a specific case. A Cambridge-trained student moving to 4MA1 has the manipulation but under-practises the longer worded problems. A 4MA1 student moving to 0580 Extended meets a non-calculator paper they have never sat. Both gaps are closable in a term if they are identified rather than discovered in a mock.

The table sets the mechanics of the two boards side by side. Check your child's own entry confirmation for the codes and tiers rather than assuming from the textbook on the shelf, because schools sometimes teach from one publisher and enter with another. The confirmation also names the series, and in the UAE that will read June or November rather than anything earlier in the year, which is the date the whole revision plan should be counted back from.

Where 0580 Extended marks actually go, strand by strand

Marked papers from this part of Dubai show the losses in predictable places. Algebra and graphs is the heaviest strand and the biggest source of lost marks, mostly through rearranging formulae with fractions and through algebraic fractions. Geometry loses marks not through wrong angles but through missing reasons, because the mark scheme wants a named circle theorem or angle property and awards nothing for a correct number alone.

Statistics has one reliable trap: histograms with unequal class widths, where frequency density is required and almost nobody does it correctly first time. Probability has another: conditional questions where the branch is computed correctly and divided by the wrong denominator. Mensuration loses marks to premature rounding carried through a multi-step volume calculation. Transformations lose marks to incomplete descriptions, a reflection stated without its mirror line or an enlargement without its centre.

None of these is an understanding problem in the usual sense. Each is a specific, nameable habit, and each can be drilled out in one to three sessions by somebody who knows which one it is. That is why a diagnostic marked paper is worth more than a term of general revision: it converts a vague grade concern into a list of four things to fix in a known order.

The table below is the diagnostic list in condensed form. A parent can use it to read their child's own marked mock before speaking to anyone, which is a more useful preparation for a tutoring conversation than anything else on this page.

The non-calculator paper and the habit it exposes

  • Short daily timed manipulation sets beat long infrequent sessions
  • Fractions, indices, surds and negative numbers are the four recurring gaps
  • Estimation practice is what catches a misplaced decimal point before it costs marks
  • Ten test questions from a past Paper 2 will confirm or rule out the diagnosis in fifteen minutes

Paper 2 deserves a section of its own because it is the paper that surprises families. A student with a solid Year 10 record can lose a grade here, and the cause is almost always the same: two years of calculator use has concealed slow or unreliable work with fractions, indices, surds and negative numbers. Classwork does not expose it. A ninety-minute paper with no calculator does, immediately.

Repairing it is not glamorous work. It means short daily sets of pure manipulation, done by hand and timed, over several weeks: adding fractions with unlike denominators, simplifying surds, laws of indices including negative and fractional powers, expanding and factorising without writing intermediate steps on a machine. Ten minutes a day for six weeks does more than a three-hour session a fortnight, and a tutor's job here is largely to set the right sets and check they were done properly.

The second Paper 2 skill is estimating, so that an answer that is obviously wrong gets noticed. Students accustomed to a calculator stop having a sense of what size an answer should be, and so a misplaced decimal point travels unchallenged to the end of the question. Building that instinct back takes deliberate practice at approximating before calculating.

For a City Walk family, the useful thing about this diagnosis is that it is cheap to confirm. Give the student ten non-calculator manipulation questions from a past Paper 2 and time them. If the accuracy or the speed is poor, that is the problem, and it is a six-week problem rather than a two-year one.

What a parent can verify about Dubai maths tutoring rates

Every figure in this section was published by somebody other than IB Gram and can be checked before you speak to anybody, which is the whole reason for printing it. The researched Dubai market splits into five bands by who is teaching, and the published rates were read in October 2026.

Budget online tutoring, usually delivered by university students, advertises from roughly AED 33-150 an hour, with Tutopiya listing from AED 33-52 and EdFlik from AED 45-65. A qualified subject tutor working online sits roughly AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialists in IB and IGCSE run AED 200-450 or above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate reporting AED 200-450 or more. Premium named tutors reach AED 500-650, with BartyED at AED 650. In-home visits are quoted at roughly AED 180-500 an hour including travel, Bestimate reporting AED 180-350 and independent tutors AED 200-500.

Monthly packaging in this market runs near those edges: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour arrangement are AED 240-600 for budget tutoring, AED 600-1,200 for mid-range and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Three of six researched competitor pages publish no price at all, and the two that do quote US dollars, which is not a currency a Dubai household transacts in.

None of the above is an IB Gram price list. IB Gram quotes after the free trial lesson, against a named tutor, a named syllabus and a session length, and that trial happens before any payment or card detail is taken.

Why online is the practical answer for a maths specialist

IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, so this section is an explanation rather than a sales argument. Home tutoring is a real product other providers sell at the rates above, and for a Year 7 student who cannot sit through an unsupervised hour it is the better choice. The case for online is narrower and it is strongest exactly where IGCSE maths problems are hardest.

Consider the request that actually arrives from Al Safa Street: a Year 11 student on Cambridge 0580 Extended, losing marks on Paper 2 algebraic fractions and on histogram frequency density, eight weeks from a mock. The person who can fix that is somebody who has marked that paper repeatedly. The set of such people who will also drive to City Walk for a 5.30pm start on a Tuesday is small, and it is small for reasons that have nothing to do with teaching quality.

Maths is also the subject where online delivery loses least. The lesson is a shared whiteboard with the student writing on it, which is what a maths lesson is in a room as well. Past papers and mark schemes are shared on screen, so the student and tutor are looking at the same question. The session is recorded, which matters more in maths than in most subjects because a worked method is something a student needs to watch again before a timed paper.

The gap between an online qualified tutor and an in-home visit in the published rates is largely travel time. The hour a tutor spends on Al Wasl Road at five o'clock is real and they are right to charge for it, and a family is right to ask what that hour buys. For a narrow maths specification it buys presence, and costs reach.

From IGCSE maths into the Diploma or A Level

The Year 11 maths grade is a gate, and which gate depends on the post-16 route. A Diploma student chooses between Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation, each available at Standard and Higher Level. An A Level student needs a specified grade in 0580 or 4MA1. The two routes reward different IGCSE profiles, and a student can be well prepared for one and poorly prepared for the other with the same grade.

Analysis and Approaches is the algebra-and-proof route. It assumes unaided manipulation, and it includes a non-calculator Paper 1, so the Extended 0580 student with strong Paper 2 technique is already pointed at it. Applications and Interpretation is the modelling and statistics route, calculator-permitted throughout, where interpretation and communication carry more weight than manipulation. The 0607 student, trained with a graphics calculator, is naturally closer to this one.

Higher Level in either stream is a substantial step beyond IGCSE, and the step is not mainly about topics. It is about rigour: writing an argument rather than producing an answer, and justifying each line. The Higher Level mathematical exploration then requires a personal, focused aim beyond the syllabus, which a student who has only ever answered set questions finds genuinely difficult. That is a skill worth starting in Year 11 rather than in Year 12.

UAE university requirements vary by programme, and engineering and quantitative degrees commonly prefer the analysis route. Check the specific programme's stated requirement on the university's own pages rather than relying on a general rule, and remember that Ministry of Education equivalency is a separate process from the admission requirement itself.

Where we tutor

Where the students on this page live

Maths requests from this part of Dubai follow a pattern by neighbourhood, mostly driven by which schools each area feeds and which sixth-form routes those schools push towards.

City Walk

Apartment households off Al Safa Street, usually booking one subject in a single weekday evening slot. Requests here skew towards Year 11 Extended paper technique rather than long-term content building.

Al Wasl

Villa stock along Al Wasl Road. Multi-child households are common, so a family often needs Year 8 number work and Year 11 Paper 2 preparation in the same week from different tutors.

Jumeirah 1

Older plots with stable school attendance through to Year 11. Board changes are rare here, which means a student's past-paper practice is usually on the right specification by default.

Al Safa

Beside Jumeirah College and Jumeirah Baccalaureate School. The mixed-curriculum streets produce the most 0580-against-0607 confusion of any area on this list, usually discovered at option-form time.

Jumeirah 2 and 3

Coastal plots where siblings are often split across two schools. Slots start later here, generally after six, which suits timed paper practice better than a tired afternoon session.

La Mer and Pearl Jumeira

Newer waterfront housing with a younger intake. Demand is concentrated on Year 7 to Year 9 algebra, which is the cheapest stage at which to fix a maths problem.

Umm Suqeim

Longer school runs towards Al Sufouh. Students here are frequently already in a car for an hour a day, so an online evening slot is the only addition the week can absorb.

Al Manara and Al Safa 2

Inland villas with concentrated demand for Extended Mathematics, driven by the sixth-form entry grades the nearby British-curriculum schools set for A Level Mathematics.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in City Walk

Al Safa, Al Wasl and Jumeirah

The schools immediately around City Walk, predominantly British curriculum to 16. Maths enquiries from this cluster are mostly 0580 and 4MA1, with 0607 appearing where a school pushes towards the Diploma.

Al Sufouh, Umm Suqeim and Al Barsha

The next ring out. Several of these sixth forms set specific grade requirements in 0580 or 4MA1 for A Level Mathematics, which is what turns a Year 11 maths grade into a post-16 decision.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the code, the tier and a marked paper

0580 Extended, 0607, or 4MA1 Higher, plus the most recent mock script with the marks on it. Those two things together let a specialist be proposed quickly and a plan written from evidence. Without the marked paper, the first session is spent finding out what the paper would have shown in fifteen minutes.

  2. 02

Diagnosis by strand, not by subject

The marked paper is read strand by strand and assessment objective by assessment objective, producing a short ordered list: algebra first, then histograms, then transformation descriptions. That list is the plan. A plan that says improve maths is not a plan, however reasonable it sounds on a call.

  3. 03

Free 45-minute trial with the named tutor

The first lesson is free and taken with the tutor who would teach the course. No card details are collected beforehand, and it is one trial per student per subject. The question to ask afterwards is whether the tutor named a specific habit that nobody at school had named.

  4. 04

Weekly work that comes back marked

Questions are set between sessions and returned marked against the published scheme with method and accuracy marks shown separately, because that distinction is where most IGCSE maths marks are recovered. Parents get the written feedback and the mark, not a description of effort.

  5. 05

    Timed papers before the paper

In the final weeks the work becomes full papers under conditions, timed and marked to the scheme, because pacing is a separate skill from mathematics. A student who can do every question but needs two hours for a ninety-minute paper has a timing problem, and it is fixable only by practising against a clock.

  6. 06

    Stop when the marks recover

If the diagnosis was right and the work was done, the marked papers show it within a few weeks. At that point the sensible action is to stop rather than to keep paying for reassurance. A provider who never suggests ending an arrangement is not acting in a family's interest, and this one will say when the job is done.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the syllabus code

0580, 0607 and 4MA1 are three different examinations with different calculator rules, tier names and question styles. Matching starts there rather than at the word maths, because a tutor prepared for the wrong specification will teach competently against the wrong target and nobody will notice until a mock.

Diagnosis from a marked paper

A plan is written from the script, strand by strand, with method and accuracy marks separated. That turns a grade worry into four nameable habits in a known order. Most tutoring arrangements never do this, which is why they can run for months with no visible movement in the marks.

Non-calculator fluency treated as its own skill

Paper 2 at 0580 Extended exposes fractional and surd work that two years of calculator use has hidden. Repairing it needs short daily timed sets over weeks rather than long occasional sessions, and a tutor's job there is setting the right practice and checking it happened.

Reach instead of proximity

Additional Mathematics 0606 and Edexcel Further Pure have almost no local tutor pool within a short drive of City Walk. Online delivery changes the answer from nobody suitable to somebody suitable, and for maths the lesson loses very little online because it is a shared whiteboard either way.

Rates you can check before calling

Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider that published it and dated to October 2026. Three of six researched competitor pages publish no price and two quote dollars. A family should be able to form a view on cost before a sales conversation, and on this page they can.

The honest end point

There is no grade promise on this page and no success percentage, because neither could be published with a sample size and a method behind it. What is offered is a diagnosis, a specialist for the specific gap, marked work every week, and a recommendation to stop once the marks have moved.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in City Walk: your questions answered

Which papers does my child sit for Cambridge IGCSE Maths 0580?+

Two of the four. Core candidates sit Paper 1 and Paper 3; Extended candidates sit Paper 2 and Paper 4. Paper 2 is the non-calculator Extended paper, and Paper 4 is the calculator one. Core sits a defined subset of the syllabus with a capped grade range, while Extended covers the full content and offers the full range. Your child's entry confirmation names the tier. Confirm the structure against the current syllabus for their examination year rather than against an older sibling's experience, because Cambridge revises syllabuses on a cycle.

Is Cambridge 0607 International Mathematics the same as 0580?+

No. 0607 is a separate syllabus built to feed the IB, requiring a graphics calculator throughout and including an investigation paper on some routes. The topic lists overlap heavily, which is why the two are often assumed interchangeable, but the skills emphasis differs: 0607 leans on graphical interpretation and technology, 0580 Extended on unaided algebra. Many A Level Mathematics courses in Dubai specify a grade in 0580 or 4MA1 and do not accept 0607. Confirm the sixth form's requirement in writing before the Year 10 option form is signed.

Why is my child strong in class and weak on Paper 2?+

Almost always because a calculator has been covering slow or unreliable work with fractions, indices, surds and negative numbers. Classwork never exposes it; a ninety-minute paper with no calculator exposes it in the first ten minutes. You can confirm the diagnosis yourself in a quarter of an hour: give them ten manipulation questions from a past Paper 2 and time it. If accuracy or speed is poor, that is the problem, and it responds to short daily timed sets over six weeks rather than to longer occasional sessions.

What are method marks and how does my child lose them?+

A mark scheme awards marks for method as well as for the final answer, so a student who reaches a correct intermediate stage scores even if the final number is wrong. The commonest loss in Dubai scripts is a calculator paper answered with a single number and no working: a correct answer still scores, but a wrong one scores nothing, where written working would have earned most of the marks. Writing out multi-step problems is the highest-return habit available to a Pearson 4MA1 Higher candidate, where both papers permit a calculator.

Which IGCSE maths topics cost students the most marks?+

Algebra and graphs leads, through rearranging formulae containing fractions and through algebraic fractions. Then geometry, where a correct angle without a named reason scores roughly half the available marks. Then histograms with unequal class widths, where frequency density is required and rarely handled correctly first time. Then conditional probability, where the branch is right and the denominator wrong. Mensuration loses marks to premature rounding, and transformations to descriptions missing a centre, mirror line or scale factor. Each is a nameable habit rather than a comprehension gap.

How many sessions does it take to fix a specific maths topic?+

It depends on the topic rather than on the student. Frequency density and transformation descriptions are usually one focused session plus a timed set, because they are procedural. Conditional probability takes about two with worded-question practice. Rearranging formulae containing fractions takes three to five spread over weeks, because it needs daily practice between sessions rather than explanation. A plan that gives every topic the same number of hours is not a plan. The marked paper decides the order and the weighting.

Does Pearson 4MA1 Higher really allow a calculator on both papers?+

Yes, and it changes what practice is useful. With arithmetic handled by the machine, the examiner has room for longer multi-step problems with less scaffolding, so structured written working carries more weight than it does on a Cambridge non-calculator paper. A 4MA1 student who works a five-mark question on the calculator and writes down one number has given away the method marks. A Cambridge-trained student moving onto 4MA1 usually has the manipulation and under-practises the longer worded problems, which is a closable gap in a term.

Is there an IGCSE maths tutor who can come to our City Walk home?+

Not through IB Gram: all UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are an India-only service. Independent in-home tutors do work across City Walk and Al Wasl, and the Dubai market quotes them at roughly AED 180-500 an hour with travel included. For maths specifically, the online lesson loses very little, because it is a shared whiteboard the student writes on either way, with the session recorded so a worked method can be watched again before a timed paper.

How much should IGCSE maths tutoring cost in Dubai?+

The researched market splits by who is teaching. Budget online is advertised from roughly AED 33-150, with Tutopiya from AED 33-52 and EdFlik from AED 45-65. A qualified subject tutor online sits roughly AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150, and that band is where most 0580 cases belong. Specialists run AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180-500 with travel included. Those are other providers' published rates as read in October 2026, not IB Gram prices.

Can my child take 0606 Additional Mathematics alongside 0580?+

Many strong mathematicians do, and it is useful preparation for Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. The practical obstacle in Dubai is staffing: 0606 is thinly taught in schools and the tutor pool within a short drive of City Walk is effectively empty. That makes it the clearest case on this page for online matching, because the question changes from who is nearby to who teaches it. Ask the school whether it is offered as a timetabled option or expected to be largely self-taught, because the answer changes how much support is needed.

When do UAE candidates sit IGCSE maths papers?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two; the February and March series is offered to India only and should be ignored on a UAE timetable. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Open the live official timetable through the school.

Should we choose Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation?+

It follows from the IGCSE profile and the intended degree. Analysis and Approaches is the algebra and proof route with a non-calculator paper, and it suits a student with strong 0580 Extended Paper 2 performance. Applications and Interpretation is calculator-permitted throughout and rewards modelling, statistics and interpretation, which fits a 0607 student with strong graphical work. Engineering and quantitative degrees commonly prefer the analysis route. Check the specific programme's stated requirement on the university's own pages, because general rules do not survive contact with individual admissions criteria.

How wide is the gap between IGCSE maths and Higher Level?+

Wider than most Year 11 students expect, and the difference is rigour rather than topics. Higher Level asks for an argument written line by line with justification, where IGCSE largely asks for a correct answer with working. The Higher Level mathematical exploration then requires a personal, focused aim beyond the syllabus, which a student who has only answered set questions finds genuinely hard. Starting that habit in the summer after Year 11, rather than in October of Year 12, removes most of the shock from the first term.

What does a maths lesson look like if the tutor is on a screen?+

The student writes, the tutor watches and interrupts. A shared whiteboard both can draw on, past papers and mark schemes shared on screen so both are looking at the same question, and a recording afterwards for revision. Questions are set between sessions and returned marked to the published scheme with method and accuracy marks separated. Parents receive that written feedback. Sessions sit on Gulf Standard Time around the school day and shift to post-Iftar slots during Ramadan on request.

Our mock is in eight weeks. What can realistically change?+

Paper technique and two or three strands. Eight weeks is enough to automate written working, fix pacing against a clock, close a procedural topic such as frequency density, and drill one manipulation weakness with daily sets. It is not enough to rebuild two years of algebra from scratch or to move a student between tiers safely. The shape that works starts with a timed diagnostic paper marked to the scheme in week one, then spends the remaining hours strictly where the marks went, with full timed papers in the final fortnight.

Send the syllabus code and the marked mock

The two things that make this fast are the syllabus code with the tier, and a recent mock script with marks on it. From those, a specialist in that exact specification can usually be proposed within a working day or two, with a strand-by-strand list of what to fix and in which order. The first 45-minute lesson is free, over live video on Gulf Standard Time with the named tutor, and no card details are taken beforehand. You then get a written plan built around your school's own mock dates and a quote against the named tutor and session length. When the marked papers show the gap has closed, stop.
