IB MYP Tutor in City Walk

Most families who look for an IB MYP tutor in City Walk are comparing something rather than fixing something. They are comparing a criterion grade with the percentage they used to get, the Middle Years Programme with the IGCSE their neighbour's child takes, or one school on the Jumeirah strip with another. This page makes those comparisons properly and then says what a tutor can usefully do inside them. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • MYP compared with IGCSE and Key Stage 3 on what each closes at sixteen

IB & IGCSE in City Walk

Four middle-school systems on one strip of Dubai, and the comparison nobody writes down

City Walk sits in the middle of one of the most curriculum-dense stretches of Dubai. Within a short drive a family can choose between the IB Middle Years Programme, British Key Stage 3 leading to IGCSE, an American middle-school programme, and bilingual or Indian-curriculum provision. Parents move between them, compare notes at the school gate, and arrive at a tutoring enquiry holding a comparison they cannot complete because nobody has set the systems side by side honestly.

That comparison is what this page does, because for a Middle Years Programme family it is the useful work. The MYP does not report percentages. It reports criterion levels and a grade on a different scale from the one most parents grew up with, which means a family can hold a report for three years without knowing whether their child is doing well. Meanwhile the neighbour's child sits IGCSE papers at sixteen with grades everybody recognises, and the comparison feels unfavourable even when the student is thriving.

So we compare four things. The MYP against IGCSE, Key Stage 3 and American middle school, on content, assessment and what each keeps open at sixteen. Criterion levels against the percentage marks a parent understands, with the translation problem named rather than glossed. The eight subject groups against each other, on what a tutor can and cannot usefully do in each. And City Walk against the neighbouring districts, where the honest finding is that the schools differ and the tutoring answer does not.

What a Middle Years Programme tutor actually does follows from that. It is not subject cramming, because there is no external examination to cram for in most MYP years. It is teaching a student to meet published criteria: to write an evaluation where an evaluation is asked for, to reflect rather than summarise, to apply a skill in an unfamiliar context, which is the thing criterion D in most subject groups rewards and the thing most students lose marks on. Confirm the current criteria and descriptors with your child's school, since the IB revises them.

On delivery, plainly. IB Gram teaches UAE families one-to-one over live video. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE and we operate no centre here; home visiting is a service we run only in India. For a middle-school student, sessions are usually shorter than a Diploma student's and are best placed early in the evening rather than late, which the short City Walk school run makes practical. Short frequent sessions are also only economic over video, since nobody drives across Dubai twice a week to teach forty minutes to a twelve year old.

Everything below is sourced where it can be. Regulatory facts are attributed to u.ae and KHDA. Market rates are attributed to the provider or publication that published them, with the month they were read, and none of them is a price of ours. Where a detail of IB assessment could not be verified from an official source it is flagged for confirmation with the school rather than stated as fact, and no statistic appears here without a number, a date and a method behind it.

At a glance

  • The MYP reports criterion levels, not percentages, which is the root of most confusion
  • Four distinct middle-school systems operate within a short drive of City Walk
  • MYP work is criterion literacy rather than subject cramming; there is no annual external paper
  • Criterion D in most subject groups rewards application in an unfamiliar context
  • City Walk schools differ from their neighbours; the tutoring answer does not
  • Lessons are one-to-one over live video; home visits are an India-only service
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A City Walk family is comparing programmes as much as choosing one. These are the four routes in play across this part of Dubai, set out on the same terms so they can actually be compared.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

IB Middle Years Programme, MYP 1-5

Five years across eight subject groups, assessed internally against published criteria rather than by annual external examination. Each subject is marked on four criteria, and criterion levels combine into a subject grade on a scale that is not a percentage. The programme emphasises conceptual understanding, inquiry and the transfer of skills to unfamiliar contexts, and culminates in the Personal Project in MYP 5.

Several schools around City Walk, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim run the MYP through to MYP 5 before the Diploma. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds three new International Baccalaureate schools among seven new private schools, creating 16,846 new places in total, so the IB share of this corridor is growing rather than static.

KS3Ages 11-16 · Years 7-11

British Key Stage 3 into IGCSE

Three years of Key Stage 3 followed by two years of IGCSE, examined externally at sixteen with grades on the 9-1 or A*-G scales. Content coverage is specified and assessment is predominantly by written paper. The comparison most City Walk MYP parents make is with this route, because it dominates the corridor by enrolment and because its grades are legible to everybody.

UK curriculum accounts for 37% of Dubai private school students, against 7% on an International Baccalaureate programme, from a 2024-25 market of 387,441 students across 227 private schools. That asymmetry is why MYP families in this district are usually the ones explaining their child's report rather than reading somebody else's.

USAges 11-14 · Grades 6-8

American middle school

Three years of middle school with continuous assessment, a grade point average, and a high-school diploma pathway afterwards that may include Advanced Placement courses. Assessment is frequent and percentage-based, which makes progress legible to parents in a way the MYP is not, and which is one reason some families find the transition into the MYP disorienting.

American curriculum accounts for 14% of Dubai private school students. For equivalency purposes the American track has its own sourced requirements: English proficiency via IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT 450 in reading and writing, and SAT Mathematics of at least 450. No IB points threshold has been published on an official source, so none appears here.

MoEAll year groups

The mandatory UAE subjects, in every route

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run alongside the licensed international curriculum in every Dubai private school, whichever route a family chooses. They occupy timetabled periods and appear on the report, and they are one of the few genuinely common elements across all four systems compared on this page.

KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated based on a 40-minute lesson unit, and for these subjects the use of any different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is strictly prohibited.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The eight Middle Years Programme subject groups, compared on what a tutor can usefully do in each. The honest answer differs more between groups than families expect, and in two of them the useful work is mostly not tutoring at all.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Assessed on analysing, organising, producing text and using language. The recoverable work is structural: students who read perceptively still land mid-band because the response is not organised to the criterion. Reading a descriptor together and rewriting one paragraph against it is often worth more than three lessons of content.

Language Acquisition

MYP 1-5, by phase

Assessed on comprehending spoken and written text and on communicating in response. Phases rather than year groups determine the level, which parents frequently misread as a setting decision. Progress here comes from frequency rather than session length, so short regular contact is the pattern that works.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. Criterion D is where marks go: students describe sources rather than evaluating them, and they summarise rather than reaching a judgement. That is a specific teachable move and it transfers directly into IGCSE history or the Diploma later.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The design and evaluation criteria are where most MYP science marks are lost, and they are also the criteria that transfer most usefully into IGCSE practical writing and the Diploma investigation.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5 is the route that keeps IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level realistic. The fourth criterion, real-life application, is the one that distinguishes a 6 from a 7 and the one least practised.

Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution and evaluating. A process subject where marks come from documenting the process rather than from the final artefact, which is counterintuitive for students and for parents. Tutoring here is almost entirely about documentation discipline.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. Like Design, assessed substantially on process and reflection. The useful tutoring intervention is narrow: helping a student articulate a reflection that explains a decision rather than describing what was made.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Assessed on knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Tutoring is rarely the right answer here, and saying so is more useful than offering it. Where a student is losing marks it is usually on the written planning and reflection components.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed across subject groups on disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting. Students find these the hardest thing in the programme because the task does not belong to a subject they can revise. The transferable skill is explicit synthesis, which is teachable and which almost nobody teaches.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

An extended independent project with a written report, assessed against published criteria. The boundary is absolute: a tutor may explain criteria, discuss process and give feedback on the student's own work, and may not write, produce or complete any part of it. Confirm the current criteria with the school's MYP coordinator.

Service as Action

MYP 1-5

A participation and reflection requirement rather than an assessed subject in the usual sense. Nothing here needs a tutor, and a provider offering support for it is selling something unnecessary. The reflection writing is the only part where a student might need help structuring their thinking.

Approaches to Learning

Across all subject groups

The skills framework running through the programme: thinking, communication, social, self-management and research skills. This is the genuinely transferable part of the MYP and the thing that makes a well-taught MYP student strong in the Diploma. It is also the part that a subject-focused tutor tends to ignore entirely.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three session patterns suited to a Middle Years Programme student, chosen by age and by what the criteria actually require. All UAE tuition is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Short early sessions for MYP 1 to 3

Forty to forty-five minutes rather than an hour, placed early in the evening. Eleven to fourteen year olds concentrate well for that length and poorly for longer, and a session at 4pm after a short City Walk school run is worth considerably more than the same session at 7.30pm. The work is usually criterion literacy and one piece of current coursework rather than content coverage.

  • Forty to forty-five minutes, not a full hour
  • Early evening, after a short school run
  • Worked from the school's own unit planner and task sheet
  • Free trial lesson at the hour you intend to book

Criterion-focused blocks for MYP 4 and 5

Six to eight sessions aimed at one criterion across one or two subject groups, usually the investigating, evaluating or critical-thinking criterion where most marks are lost. The output is a student who can read a descriptor and tell you what band their own work sits in, which is the single most useful thing an MYP student can learn.

  • One criterion at a time, across one or two subject groups
  • Descriptors read and applied to the student's own work
  • A defined endpoint rather than an open arrangement
  • Reviewed against the next school assessment

Personal Project process coaching

A small number of sessions in MYP 5 on the criteria, the process journal and the structure of the report. The tutor explains what each criterion rewards, discusses whether a proposed goal is achievable and documentable, and gives feedback on the student's own writing. The student produces every word and every artefact.

  • Criteria explained and applied to the student's own plan
  • Goal viability discussed before months are invested
  • Feedback on the student's own writing; no text supplied
  • Nothing written, produced or completed by a tutor

What we do not offer in the UAE

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the United Arab Emirates. There is no visit to a City Walk home and no centre to drive to; home visiting is a service we run only in India. We also do not write, produce or complete any part of a Personal Project, an interdisciplinary task or any assessed MYP work, and we do not distribute IB documents.

  • No in-home visits anywhere in the UAE
  • No UAE office, branch or tuition centre
  • No assessed work written, produced or completed by a tutor
  • No grade guarantees and no invented statistics

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in City Walk

The tutors below teach Middle Years Programme subjects one-to-one over live video. Each works from the student's own school unit planners and criterion descriptors rather than from a generic middle-school scheme, because the MYP is assessed against criteria the school publishes and a generic scheme cannot address them.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in City Walk

01

Four middle-school systems, set side by side

This is the comparison a City Walk family is usually making in their head and has never seen written down. Four systems operate within a short drive, they assess completely differently, and they close different doors at sixteen. Putting them on one set of terms is more useful than any amount of advocacy for one of them.

The Middle Years Programme assesses internally against published criteria, reports criterion levels and a subject grade that is not a percentage, and runs five years to MYP 5. British Key Stage 3 into IGCSE assesses mostly by written paper, reports percentages and then external grades at sixteen on a scale everybody recognises. American middle school assesses continuously with a grade point average and leads into a high-school diploma. Bilingual and Indian-curriculum provision adds further variation across the corridor.

What differs most is not rigour but legibility. An MYP report is harder for a parent to read than a percentage, which is why MYP families in this district spend three years uncertain whether their child is doing well while their IGCSE-route neighbours do not. That is an information problem rather than an educational one, and it is solvable in a single conversation with the criteria in front of you.

What differs materially at sixteen is the transition. An MYP 5 student moving into the Diploma is continuing within one philosophy, and the shift from criterion-based coursework to timed unseen papers still catches students out in DP1. An MYP 5 student moving into IGCSE or A Levels is making a larger jump, because external written examination is a skill the MYP does not systematically train. Neither is a reason to avoid the programme; both are reasons to prepare for the specific transition your family is heading towards.

02

Criterion levels against the marks you already understand

The most common question a City Walk MYP parent asks is what a level 5 actually means, and the honest answer is that it means a band of performance against a published descriptor rather than a proportion of marks earned. Each subject in the Middle Years Programme is assessed against four criteria, each criterion is marked on a scale, and the criterion levels combine into a subject grade on a separate scale. Confirm the exact current structure and boundaries with your child's school, because the IB revises them and schools report in slightly different ways.

The translation problem is real and worth being explicit about. A criterion level is not a percentage and a subject grade is not an IGCSE grade. Treating a 6 as equivalent to a particular percentage or letter will mislead you, and the frequent consequence is a family either relaxing when they should not or buying tutoring they do not need. What a criterion level does tell you, precisely, is which band of a published descriptor the student's work sat in for that criterion on that task.

That precision is also the opportunity. Because the descriptors are published, a student can be taught to read their own work against them, which is something no percentage allows. A student who can look at a piece of their own writing and say that it describes rather than evaluates, and therefore sits in the middle band of that criterion rather than the top, has acquired a skill that will serve them through the Diploma and beyond. That is the central work of Middle Years Programme tutoring.

A practical step that costs nothing. Ask the school for the criterion descriptors for one subject, sit down with your child and the last marked task, and work out together which band each criterion landed in and why. Most families have never done this, and most schools provide the descriptors on request or already publish them in the course guide. It usually takes thirty minutes and it frequently makes a tutor unnecessary in that subject.

03

City Walk against its neighbours: the schools differ, the answer does not

City Walk has no school inside its boundary, so every family here commutes, and the comparison families make is between campuses rather than between districts. Jumeirah 1 and 2 are the closest and most varied cluster, containing both IB and British provision. Jumeirah 3 and Umm Suqeim hold a further concentration of international schools. Al Wasl and Al Safa are predominantly British curriculum, which is where the IGCSE comparison at the school gate comes from.

Those differences are real and they matter when choosing a school. They do not change the tutoring answer, and it is worth saying why. The Middle Years Programme is assessed against published criteria by the school, which means the useful tutoring work is reading those criteria with the student and applying them to their own tasks. That work is identical whether the campus is in Jumeirah 1 or Umm Suqeim, and it depends entirely on having the school's own unit planner and task sheet rather than on proximity to the building.

Nor does proximity produce a specialist. The MYP has eight subject groups, five year levels and four criteria each, which is a large number of distinct teaching situations spread across a modest number of students in any one district. A parent who filters for a tutor within twenty minutes of City Walk is choosing from a pool of a few dozen; the family's actual requirement, somebody who has taught MYP 4 Individuals and Societies and understands criterion D, is unlikely to be inside it.

The one thing the district genuinely controls is the start time, and here City Walk does well. Short runs in several directions mean an MYP student can often be home by 3.45pm, which supports a 4pm session. For an eleven to fourteen year old that matters more than it does for a Diploma student, because a forty-minute session at 4pm is productive and the same session at 7.30pm frequently is not.

04

The criterion where most MYP marks actually go

  • The application or evaluation criterion is where most MYP marks are lost
  • Students write description where judgement was asked for; the content is often right
  • The move transfers across subject groups, so it is unusually good value
  • Strong knowledge levels with a weak application level means technique, not content

Across the subject groups, the recurring loss is in the criterion that asks a student to do something with knowledge rather than to state it. It appears under different names: evaluating in sciences, thinking critically in Individuals and Societies, applying mathematics in real-life contexts, evaluating in Design. In every case it asks for application, judgement or evaluation in a context the student has not seen before, and in every case students produce description instead.

The pattern is diagnosable from any marked task. A student scoring well on the knowing-and-understanding criterion and poorly on the application criterion does not have a content problem; they have never been taught the shape of an evaluative answer. They write what happened, carefully and correctly, where they were asked what it implies, what the limitation is, or which option is better and why. The content is right and the answer is in the wrong form.

This is also why Middle Years Programme tutoring looks different from subject cramming. There is no annual external paper to drill in most MYP years, so the work is teaching the move: state a judgement, support it with specific evidence, acknowledge the limitation, and connect it back to the question. Taught once properly it transfers across subject groups, which makes it unusually good value: three sessions in one subject frequently improve criterion performance in two others.

For a City Walk family the practical sequence is short. Ask the school for the criterion descriptors in the subject where the levels are lowest. Find the marked task that produced those levels. Identify whether the gap is in knowledge or in the application criterion. If it is application, a short block will move it. If it is knowledge across all four criteria, the conversation belongs with the subject teacher before it belongs with a tutor.

05

MYP 5 into the Diploma, or into IGCSE: two different jumps

  • The Diploma jump looks continuous and is not, especially in maths and sciences
  • Extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5 keeps HL Analysis and Approaches realistic
  • Moving out to IGCSE means meeting specification, tier and past papers at once
  • Ask the receiving school in writing what it expects an MYP 5 entrant to have covered

At sixteen a City Walk MYP student goes in one of two directions, and the two require different preparation. Into the Diploma, which is the continuation route and feels like one unbroken course because it often happens on the same campus. Or out to IGCSE or A Levels, usually because of a school move or a family relocation.

The Diploma jump is underestimated precisely because it looks continuous. MYP 5 assessment is criterion-based coursework and tasks; DP1 includes timed unseen papers, and in mathematics and the sciences particularly, a student with strong MYP levels can find October of DP1 genuinely difficult. The demand is new rather than harder. Six to ten weeks of timed practice in the summer or the first term closes most of that gap, and extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5 is what keeps Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level realistic.

The jump out to IGCSE is larger in a different way. The MYP does not systematically train external written examination, so a student moving into Year 10 or Year 11 of an IGCSE course meets specification content, tiering and past papers all at once. The useful preparation is practical: find out which specification and tier the receiving school will enter them for, obtain the specification, and work through the content gap rather than assuming equivalence between the systems.

In both cases the mistake is to treat the move as administrative. A City Walk family deciding in the spring of MYP 5 which direction to go should ask the receiving school, in writing, what it expects an incoming MYP 5 student to have covered, and where the gaps usually are. Schools answer this well when asked specifically, and the answer turns a vague worry into a six-week piece of work.

The Personal Project compared with IGCSE coursework

  • The Personal Project rewards documented process; IGCSE coursework rewards output
  • An impressive artefact with no process journal scores in the middle bands
  • Criteria explanation, goal viability and feedback on the student's own work: allowed
  • Writing, producing or completing any part of it: never, in either system

Families moving between systems frequently ask how the Personal Project compares with an IGCSE coursework piece, and the comparison is instructive because the two reward almost opposite things. An IGCSE coursework piece is generally judged on the quality of the final output against subject criteria. The Personal Project is judged substantially on the process: the goal, the planning, the documentation and the reflection, with the artefact or outcome as evidence rather than as the whole assessment.

This catches students out in a specific way. A capable MYP 5 student produces an impressive final outcome, documents almost none of the process, and scores in the middle bands. A less impressive outcome with a rigorously documented process and genuine reflection scores higher. That is not a flaw in the assessment; it is what the assessment is for. But it is counterintuitive for a student and for a parent who has been looking at the outcome rather than the process journal.

The boundary on what help is permissible is absolute in both systems and worth stating in the same words. A tutor may explain the criteria, discuss whether a goal is achievable and documentable, and give feedback on the student's own writing and planning. A tutor may not write, produce, draft or complete any part of the work. A malpractice finding falls on the student, and in the IB that can have consequences well beyond one grade. We will not do it and will not accept such work if a family offers it.

The useful intervention is early and small. One or two sessions at the goal-setting stage, establishing whether the proposed project can actually be documented against the criteria, routinely prevents months of work that cannot score well. Confirm the current criteria with your school's MYP coordinator, since the IB revises them, and ask for the school's own guidance document, which will set out its internal deadlines.

07

What MYP support costs against Diploma support

A useful comparison for a City Walk family is between what middle-school support costs and what Diploma support costs, because the published Dubai rates are generally quoted for the senior end of the market and parents assume they apply throughout.

The published figures, each attributed to the provider or publication that stated it and read in October 2026: Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end of online tutoring. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200, which is itself a useful comparison because it shows one provider pricing the IB above IGCSE. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 and IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialist work at AED 200 to 450 or more, with independent home tutors reaching AED 200 to 500 once travel is included. TutorChase quotes AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 at the premium end. Monthly packages include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Two observations a City Walk parent can draw from that without help. First, the rates that get quoted in this market are senior-phase rates, and a middle-school session is a different piece of work: shorter, aimed at criterion literacy rather than examination technique, and frequently needing fewer sessions in total. A provider quoting a Higher Level Diploma rate for an MYP 2 student should be asked what the premium is for. Second, Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range, which is the realistic band for sustained middle-school support rather than the specialist exam-year band of AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more.

IB Gram does not publish a UAE rate card on these pages and does not present any of these figures as ours. The free trial lesson exists so a family can see the teaching before discussing money, and for an MYP student it is worth taking at the length you intend to book, because a forty-minute session and an hour are genuinely different experiences for a twelve year old. For wider budget context, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion.

  • Mandatory UAE subjects sit alongside the MYP exactly as they do alongside Key Stage 3
  • Additional or different content for those subjects needs prior Ministry permission
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free and valid for two years
  • No regulator approval claimed, no UAE premises, no self-asserted ratings

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, so they sit alongside the Middle Years Programme exactly as they sit alongside Key Stage 3. KHDA requires separate classes by group: for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited due to the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Instructional time is calculated based on a 40-minute lesson unit, with an advised minimum of 25 minutes for any mandatory subject lesson.

One constraint before buying support for these subjects: for the mandatory UAE subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, and KHDA requires schools to ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects. A provider claiming to deliver an alternative syllabus in these subjects is describing something not permitted.

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount appears here.

And the claims we decline. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation, licence, approval or partnership, and has no office, branch or centre in the United Arab Emirates. In Dubai your child's school is regulated by KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate; naming a regulator explains what it does and is not a claim of endorsement. We publish no self-asserted rating, no satisfaction percentage and no statistic without a number, a date and a method, and we do not write or complete assessed work of any kind.

Starting from City Walk, with the comparison settled

  • Read one set of criterion descriptors with your child before buying anything
  • Bring the unit planner, the descriptors and the last marked task
  • Coverage is strong in the four largest subject groups and narrower elsewhere
  • Forty to forty-five minutes at 4pm beats an hour at 7.30pm below MYP 4

The cheapest first step is a thirty-minute conversation at your own kitchen table. Ask the school for the criterion descriptors in the subject where your child's levels are lowest, find the marked task that produced those levels, and work out together which band each criterion landed in and why. Most families have never done this and most schools provide the descriptors readily. It frequently makes a tutor unnecessary in that subject, which is a result worth having.

If a tutor is the right answer, bring three things: the school's unit planner or task sheet for the current unit, the criterion descriptors for that subject, and the most recent marked task with its criterion levels. Those three make a diagnosis possible in the first session. Without them, the first two sessions are spent establishing what the school is actually assessing, which is an avoidable cost.

Coverage across the Middle Years Programme subject groups is good in Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Sciences and Mathematics, which is where almost all demand sits. Design, Arts, Language Acquisition in less common languages and interdisciplinary support are narrower, and we will say so at the enquiry rather than matching you to somebody approximate. Physical and Health Education is a subject where tutoring is rarely the right answer and we will tell you that too.

On timing: City Walk's short school runs mean a 4pm session is genuinely available here, and for an eleven to fourteen year old that is the difference between a productive forty minutes and a tired one. Forty to forty-five minutes is usually the right length below MYP 4. The free trial lesson should be taken at the hour and the length you intend to book, so the pattern is tested alongside the teaching, and no card is required to take it.

City Walk against the districts along the strip

The comparison a City Walk family actually makes is with the neighbouring districts and their schools. These are the ones in play, with what genuinely differs for a Middle Years Programme family in each.

City Walk

A low-rise residential and retail district between Al Wasl and Jumeirah with no school inside it. Short runs in several directions, which means an MYP student can realistically be home by 3.45pm and ready for an early short session.

Jumeirah 1 and 2

Immediately north, with several long-established campuses including both IB and British provision. The shortest school runs available to a City Walk family and the direction in which a 4pm session is most comfortable.

Jumeirah 3 and Umm Suqeim

Further along the coast, with a concentration of IB and international schools. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes, and Thursday evenings are the heaviest of the week on the coast road.

Al Wasl and Al Safa

Inland and predominantly British curriculum, which is where the comparison most City Walk MYP parents make actually lives. Ten to twenty minutes, and the district most likely to supply the IGCSE comparison at the school gate.

Al Manara and Al Quoz

Mixed provision inland, with longer and less predictable evening journeys. A student schooling in this direction arrives home around 4.30pm, which pushes a sensible MYP session to 4.45pm or later.

La Mer and Pearl Jumeira

Coastal developments immediately north with few schools inside them. Operationally identical to City Walk for scheduling, and families move between them without changing anything about the week.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Ten to fifteen minutes inland, also without schools inside their boundaries. The same thin local specialist pool and the same evening congestion, which is why distance is not the useful filter here either.

Al Barsha

A longer run west along Sheikh Zayed Road to several established IB campuses. The latest realistic weeknight starts for a City Walk family and the strongest case for a weekend morning session.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in City Walk

Jumeirah and the coast

The closest and most varied cluster to City Walk, containing both IB and British provision, which is precisely why families here compare the two systems so constantly. Programme offer varies between campuses, so the route a child is on should be confirmed rather than inferred.

  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah
  • Dubai College

Al Wasl, Al Safa and inland

Predominantly British curriculum and the source of most of the IGCSE comparison a City Walk MYP family hears at the school gate. Ten to twenty minutes from City Walk depending on the hour.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Safa British School
  • Safa Community School
  • Horizon English School
  • GEMS Our Own Indian School, Al Quoz

Al Barsha and the western corridor

A further set of established IB and British campuses reached along Sheikh Zayed Road. The longest journeys from City Walk and therefore the direction in which a weekend morning session is often the better choice.

  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Repton Al Barsha
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • GEMS Wellington Academy, Al Khail
  • Credence High School

Named schools appear as context for the neighbourhood's education ecosystem. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership, client relationship or endorsement arrangement with any school named on this page, and inclusion does not imply one.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Read one criterion descriptor with your child

Ask the school for the descriptors in the subject where levels are lowest, find the last marked task, and work out together which band each criterion landed in and why. Thirty minutes, free, and it frequently establishes that the issue is criterion literacy rather than subject knowledge.

  2. 02

Decide which comparison you are actually making

Whether a level 5 is a problem, whether the MYP is the right route against the IGCSE your neighbour's child takes, or whether the right direction at sixteen is the Diploma or an external examination course. Those are different questions and the second two are school conversations rather than tutoring ones.

  3. 03

    Bring the school's own documents

The unit planner or task sheet for the current unit, the criterion descriptors for the subject, and the most recent marked task with its levels. The MYP is assessed against the school's published criteria, so a tutor working without them is working blind and the first two sessions get spent catching up.

  4. 04

A short consultation on Gulf Standard Time

Fifteen to twenty minutes to establish whether the gap is in knowledge or in the application criterion, which subject groups are affected, and what session length suits your child's age. If the honest answer is that no tutoring is needed, we will say so.

  5. 05

Trial at the length and hour you intend to use

For an MYP student the length matters as much as the hour: forty minutes and sixty minutes are genuinely different experiences for a twelve year old. Take the free trial in the slot you want, at the length you want, so the pattern is tested alongside the teaching. No card is required.

  6. 06

Review against the next school assessment

The right measure is the criterion levels on the next marked task, not a general impression of confidence. If the targeted criterion has moved and the others held, the block worked and can end. Blocks that end on purpose cost less than arrangements that renew by default.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The comparison made properly

The MYP set beside IGCSE, British Key Stage 3 and American middle school on the same terms, including what each closes at sixteen. Most City Walk families are holding that comparison unfinished, and completing it answers more than a tutoring question does.

Criterion literacy as the actual skill

The work is teaching a student to read their own work against a published descriptor and say which band it sits in. That is what MYP assessment rewards, it transfers across subject groups, and it is still useful in the Diploma. Subject cramming is not the right shape for a programme with no annual external paper.

Worked from the school's own documents

Unit planners, task sheets and criterion descriptors from your child's own school, not a generic middle-school scheme. The MYP is internally assessed against the school's published criteria, so this is the only material that can actually address the marks being lost.

Session length matched to age

Forty to forty-five minutes below MYP 4, placed early in the evening. An eleven to fourteen year old concentrates well for that length and poorly for longer, and City Walk's short school runs make a 4pm start genuinely available rather than theoretical.

The Personal Project coached, never produced

Criteria explained, goal viability tested at the planning stage, and feedback on the student's own writing. Nothing written, drafted, produced or completed by a tutor, because a malpractice finding falls on your child and in the IB can reach beyond a single grade.

Willing to say no tutoring is needed

Where the issue is criterion literacy a parent can fix in thirty minutes, where strong knowledge levels sit beside one weak application level, or where the subject is Physical and Health Education, we will say that. A provider that never declines a sale is not advising you.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in City Walk: your questions answered

Is the Middle Years Programme better or worse than the IGCSE route our neighbours use?+

They are different rather than ranked, and the useful comparison is what each closes at sixteen. The MYP assesses internally against published criteria across five years and eight subject groups, and leads naturally into the IB Diploma. British Key Stage 3 into IGCSE assesses mostly by external written paper and produces grades everybody recognises. The MYP trains extended independent work better; the IGCSE route trains timed examination better. Neither is a reason to switch, and both are reasons to prepare specifically for whichever transition your family is heading towards.

Why can't I tell from an MYP report whether my child is doing well?+

Because it reports criterion levels and a subject grade rather than percentages, and the scales are not equivalent to anything you grew up with. That is an information problem and it is solvable in one sitting. Ask the school for the criterion descriptors in one subject, take the last marked task, and work out together which band each criterion landed in and why. Most families have never done this and most schools provide the descriptors readily. Confirm the current structure with the school, because the IB revises it.

What does a level 5 in an MYP subject actually represent?+

A band of performance against a published descriptor for that criterion on that task, not a proportion of marks earned. Each subject is assessed against four criteria, each on its own scale, and the levels combine into a subject grade on a separate scale again. Treating a level as a percentage, or a subject grade as an IGCSE grade, will mislead you in both directions: families relax when they should not and buy tutoring when they need not. Ask the school for the exact current boundaries it uses.

My child scores well on knowing and understanding and poorly on the fourth criterion. Why?+

Because that criterion asks them to do something with the knowledge rather than state it, and almost nobody teaches the shape of that answer explicitly. It appears as evaluating in sciences, thinking critically in Individuals and Societies, applying mathematics in real-life contexts, and evaluating in Design. Students write what happened, correctly and carefully, where they were asked what it implies or which option is better and why. The content is right and the form is wrong, which is a three-session fix that transfers across subject groups.

Does living near our school make it easier to find an MYP tutor in this area?+

No, and the arithmetic is the reason. The Middle Years Programme has eight subject groups, five year levels and four criteria each, which is a large number of distinct teaching situations spread across a modest number of students in any one district. A family's real requirement is somebody who has taught, say, MYP 4 Individuals and Societies and understands the critical-thinking criterion. A pool of a few dozen tutors within twenty minutes of City Walk is unlikely to contain that person with a free hour at the time you need.

Would moving from City Walk to Jumeirah or Umm Suqeim change our options?+

It would change the schools available and not the tutoring answer. Those districts hold a different mix of IB and British provision, which matters when choosing a campus. But MYP support is criterion literacy worked from your child's own school unit planners and descriptors, and that work is identical whichever campus produced the documents. The one thing a district genuinely controls is the session start time, and City Walk's short runs in several directions make a 4pm start among the easiest in this part of Dubai.

How long should a tutoring session be for an MYP 2 student?+

Forty to forty-five minutes, placed early in the evening. Eleven to thirteen year olds concentrate well for that length and poorly beyond it, and a shorter productive session beats a longer one that drifts in the final twenty minutes. The hour matters as much as the length: a session at 4pm after a short school run is worth considerably more than the same session at 7.30pm. Take the free trial at the length and hour you intend to use, so both are tested rather than assumed.

Does extended mathematics in MYP 4 matter for the Diploma?+

Yes, materially. Extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5 is the route that keeps IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level realistic, because it covers the algebraic depth that course assumes. A student on standard mathematics who later wants Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is carrying a gap into a demanding two-year course. If a quantitative degree is a possibility, raise the extended question in MYP 3 or early MYP 4 rather than discovering it during the Diploma option choices.

Our child has strong MYP levels. Why would DP1 be difficult?+

Because the demand changes rather than the difficulty. MYP 5 assessment is criterion-based coursework and tasks, which rewards investigation, process and communication. DP1 introduces timed unseen papers, which require repeated manipulation of unfamiliar material against a clock, and that is a skill the MYP does not systematically train. A student holding 6s and 7s can therefore be genuinely able and still struggle in October of DP1, particularly in mathematics and the sciences. Six to ten weeks of timed practice closes most of that gap.

What happens if we move our child from the MYP into an IGCSE school at sixteen?+

They meet specification content, tiering and past papers all at once, which is a larger jump than moving into the Diploma. The practical preparation is administrative first: ask the receiving school in writing which specification and tier they will enter your child for, obtain the specification document, and identify the content gap rather than assuming equivalence between the systems. Schools answer this well when asked specifically, and the answer usually turns a vague worry into a defined six-week piece of work.

How does the Personal Project compare with IGCSE coursework?+

They reward nearly opposite things, which catches students out. An IGCSE coursework piece is generally judged on the quality of the final output against subject criteria. The Personal Project is judged substantially on documented process: the goal, the planning, the process journal and the reflection, with the outcome as evidence rather than the whole assessment. A capable student who produces an impressive artefact and documents almost nothing scores in the middle bands. Confirm the current criteria with your school's MYP coordinator.

Can a tutor help my child plan the Personal Project?+

A tutor may explain each criterion, discuss whether a proposed goal is achievable and documentable against them, and give feedback on the student's own writing and planning. A tutor may not write, draft, produce or complete any part of it. That boundary protects your child, because a malpractice finding falls on the student and in the IB can have consequences beyond a single grade. The highest-value intervention is one or two sessions at the goal-setting stage, which routinely prevents months of work that cannot score well.

Does my child take Arabic and Islamic Education alongside the MYP?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, so they sit alongside the MYP exactly as they do alongside Key Stage 3. KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes are strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated based on a 40-minute lesson unit, with an advised minimum of 25 minutes for any mandatory subject lesson.

Can we get tutoring in Arabic to support the mandatory subjects?+

Within real limits that are worth knowing. For the mandatory UAE subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, and KHDA requires schools to ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects. A provider claiming to deliver an alternative syllabus in these subjects is describing something not permitted. Support that works from the school's own material is a different matter, and our coverage in these streams is limited rather than comprehensive.

Should MYP tutoring cost the same as Diploma tutoring in Dubai?+

It is worth asking what the premium is for. The published rates quoted in this market are mostly senior-phase rates: Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 an hour and IGCSE from AED 150, and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table places specialist work at AED 200 to 450 or more. A middle-school session is shorter, aimed at criterion literacy rather than examination technique, and often needs fewer sessions overall. Bestimate's monthly estimates of AED 240 to 600 budget and AED 600 to 1,200 mid are the realistic band for sustained MYP support.

Is there an MYP tutor who could come to our home in City Walk?+

Not from us. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the United Arab Emirates and has no office, branch or tuition centre here; home visiting is a service we run only in India. All UAE tuition is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For a middle-school student this has a practical benefit: short frequent sessions of forty minutes are straightforward over video and uneconomic as drives, and short frequent sessions are exactly what a younger student responds to best.

Finish the comparison before you buy anything

Most City Walk families arrive at a Middle Years Programme enquiry holding an unfinished comparison, and finishing it is free. Ask the school for the criterion descriptors in the subject where levels are lowest. Sit down with your child and the last marked task and work out which band each criterion landed in and why. If the gap is in the application or evaluation criterion, a short block will move it and we can tell you what that looks like. If the levels are low across all four criteria, the conversation belongs with the subject teacher first. And if the comparison you are really making is between the MYP and the IGCSE route at a neighbouring school, that is a school conversation rather than a tutoring one, and we will say so. The trial lesson is free and no card is required.
