IB & IGCSE in City Walk

City Walk or Jumeirah 1 — the maths question does not change

City Walk is an apartment district, and that single fact changes how its families shop for tuition. Walk ten minutes north-west and you are in Jumeirah 1, where the housing is villas with a study and a spare room. Walk south and you hit Al Wasl and Al Safa, where the big British schools sit. A parent in a Jumeirah 1 villa has somewhere obvious to put a visiting tutor. A parent in a City Walk apartment often does not, and the sitting room is also where a younger sibling is doing homework. So City Walk families ask the home-tutor question earlier and more sceptically than their neighbours two streets over.

Here is the honest answer, and it is the same answer on both sides of Al Wasl Road. The thing that decides whether IB Mathematics tuition works is not the room. It is whether the tutor has taught the exact course your child sits. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation are two separate courses with two separate syllabuses, four separate paper structures across HL and SL, and two very different ideas of what a good answer looks like. A tutor who is strong at one is not automatically useful at the other. There are not many of either within a twenty-minute drive of City Walk, and the ones who are get booked by whoever called first.

IB Gram does not solve that by sending someone to your building. We do not send tutors to UAE addresses at all — home visits are a service we run only in India. We solve it by removing the drive from the equation. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, so the pool you choose from is every Mathematics AA and AI specialist we work with rather than the three who happen to live near Al Safa. A City Walk student who needs Paper 3 practice at HL gets someone who has taught Paper 3, not someone who is free on Tuesdays.

That also fixes the thing City Walk parents complain about most, which is time. The school run from City Walk to Al Safa or Umm Suqeim is short in distance and unpredictable in minutes, and Al Wasl Road at 3.30pm does not care about your lesson slot. An online session starts when the clock says so. If your child walks in at 4.07pm, the lesson starts at 4.07pm and still runs its full hour. No travel fee, no tutor sitting in traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road, no lesson quietly shortened to let someone reach their next booking in Jumeirah 3.

This page is built as a comparison, because that is the decision a City Walk family is actually making. It sets this neighbourhood against the ones next to it on schools, commute and session timing. It sets Mathematics AA against AI, paper by paper, with the weightings written out. It sets online tuition against the in-home market using published AED figures with their sources named. And it counts the two years of the Diploma backwards from the May session, so you can see which eight weeks matter and which ones do not.

Everything factual below is either sourced to a named authority or framed as market observation. Where a figure belongs to a competitor, the competitor is named. Where a date belongs to Cambridge or Pearson, the official timetable is the reference rather than our restatement of it. And where something is genuinely not verifiable — IB session dates among them — this page says so instead of inventing a number your child would plan around.

At a glance

  • City Walk is apartments; the villa communities next door are not, and that changes the tuition question, not the answer
  • Mathematics AA and AI are different courses — match the tutor to the course code, not the postcode
  • The Exploration is 20% of the final grade at both HL and SL, and it is marked on five lettered criteria
  • Paper 1 in AA is sat without a calculator; Paper 1 in AI is not — the revision diet differs from day one
  • Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time; no tutor is sent to a UAE address
  • Market rates for IB subject tuition in Dubai run roughly AED 150-450 per hour depending on tier and format
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

IB Gram covers the three IB programmes a City Walk family is likely to meet, plus the British route most of the surrounding schools run at 16. The notes below are written for this part of Dubai specifically — which schools near Al Wasl and Al Safa offer what, and where the maths handover points fall.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The two-year Diploma. Mathematics is compulsory within Group 5, taken as either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Higher or Standard Level. Final assessment is two or three written papers plus the internally assessed Exploration. Grades run 1-7 per subject, with up to three bonus points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge combination, giving a 45-point ceiling.

City Walk sits closer to the British-curriculum cluster than the IB one, so Diploma students here often commute outward — to Raffles World Academy in Umm Suqeim, Swiss International Scientific School in Al Jaddaf, or GEMS World Academy. That outward commute is exactly why a 4pm in-home slot is hard to fill locally and an online slot is not.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Five years of concept-led study assessed against four criteria per subject: Knowing and understanding, Investigating patterns, Communicating, and Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Marks are 0-8 per criterion and are converted to a 1-7 grade by band. MYP mathematics splits into standard and extended routes in the upper years, and the extended route is the usual feeder into Analysis and Approaches.

MYP 4 and 5 are where a City Walk family first notices a problem, because criterion B asks for pattern-finding work that looks nothing like the drill their child did in primary. Families moving from a British primary in Al Safa into an MYP school find the gap here rather than in arithmetic.

PYPAges 3-12 · Early Years to Grade 5

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary inquiry with mathematics taught through units rather than as a standalone subject. There is no external assessment. The useful work at this stage is number fluency, place value and early fraction sense, because those are the gaps that reappear as algebra problems five years later in MYP 4.

Several PYP and early-years settings serve the Jumeirah and Al Wasl side of Dubai, and City Walk's apartment density means siblings are often at two different schools. Online slots let one tutor take two children in the same household at different times without two separate journeys.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

The two-year British route most schools around Al Safa and Jumeirah run before A Level or the Diploma. Mathematics is examined as Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1, both tiered. Cambridge splits into Core and Extended; Pearson into Foundation and Higher. Grades are 9-1, and the tier caps the available grade, which makes tier choice a two-year decision taken in Year 10.

This matters on an IB maths page because a large share of City Walk's Diploma students did IGCSE first, often at Jumeirah College or Horizon English School. The jump from 0580 Extended into Analysis and Approaches HL is the single most common reason a Year 12 student here suddenly needs a tutor in October.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics is the page, but the Diploma is taken as a package of six and no City Walk student struggles in maths alone. Below are the courses our tutors most often cover for students in this part of Dubai, with what each one actually assesses and where the marks tend to go.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The proof-and-calculus route. SL sits Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 2 with one, each 40% of the grade. HL adds Paper 3, a two-question extended-response paper worth 20%, which is where HL candidates most often lose a grade because it rewards sustained reasoning rather than recall.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The modelling-and-statistics route. A graphic display calculator is permitted in every paper, which students read as 'easier' and then discover that the marks sit in interpretation: choosing a model, justifying it, and saying what the output means in context. HL Paper 3 is modelling-led and heavily context-dependent.

Physics

HL and SL

Shares its mathematical spine with AA: differentiation in kinematics, trigonometry in waves, logarithms in decay. A City Walk student taking Physics HL with Maths AI often needs the algebra bridged explicitly, because AI does not drill the manipulation Physics assumes.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Quantitative chemistry, equilibrium and energetics are all arithmetic under exam pressure, and significant-figure and unit errors cost marks that the chemistry itself had earned. Data-based questions on Paper 2 reward the same graph-reading habits as AI Paper 2.

Economics

HL and SL

HL Paper 3 is quantitative: elasticity calculations, cost and revenue curves, tariff and quota welfare areas. Students who chose AI for its statistics often find Economics HL the course that rewards it most directly.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Algorithmic thinking, complexity and data structures, plus the internally assessed solution. The overlap with AA HL's discrete material and with AI's modelling makes this a natural pairing, and the IA needs process discipline more than coding flair.

Business Management

HL and SL

Finance and accounts carry the numerical load: break-even, cash-flow forecasts, investment appraisal. Marks are lost on presentation and interpretation rather than on the arithmetic, which is the same failure mode as AI Paper 2.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 guided analysis of unseen non-literary texts, Paper 2 comparative essay, plus the individual oral. The transferable skill for a maths student is the one Paper 3 and the Exploration both need: writing a sustained argument that does not lose its thread.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and the 1,600-word essay. Maths is one of TOK's standing examples, so a student with a clear sense of what proof is and what a model is has material the rest of their cohort has to manufacture.

Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent study. A mathematics EE is unforgiving: the topic must be narrow enough to finish and rich enough to analyse, and most failures are topic-choice failures made in the first fortnight rather than writing failures made in the last.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a City Walk family usually works with us, all delivered one-to-one over live video. The right one depends on how far into the two-year Diploma your child is and what the next assessment on their school calendar actually is.

Weekly one-to-one through the course

One or two fixed sessions a week across a term, working a week ahead of the school's scheme of work rather than behind it. This is the format that changes a grade over a year, because it removes the gap before it becomes a backlog. Slots are fixed in Gulf Standard Time and keep their place through the term.

  • Same tutor each week, same slot, no rotating cover
  • Works from your school's own scheme of work and deadlines
  • Written note after each session naming the next week's target
  • Starts at 4.30pm or later to clear the Al Wasl Road school run

Exploration coaching

Structured support for the Mathematics Exploration, taken criterion by criterion. The tutor helps the student choose a workable question, plan the mathematics, and read their own draft against criteria A to E. The student writes every word. A tutor who offers to write it is offering an academic-honesty breach that lands on your child, not on them.

  • Topic triage before any writing starts, so the question is finishable
  • Criterion-by-criterion read-through against the published descriptors
  • Checks the mathematics is at the right level for the course
  • Keeps a trail of the student's own drafts for the school's honesty declaration

Paper-focused exam block

A short, dense run of sessions aimed at one paper, used in the final term or before mocks. For AA HL that usually means Paper 3; for AI it usually means the extended modelling questions on Paper 2. Sessions are built around timed past-paper work with the mark scheme read aloud afterwards, which is where most of the gain comes from.

  • Diagnostic timed paper first, so the block targets real gaps
  • Mark-scheme reading as a taught skill, not an afterthought
  • Command-term drilling: show, hence, deduce, justify
  • Can run intensively through school holidays or at post-Iftar times in Ramadan

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in City Walk

01

What a City Walk parent is actually asking

  • IB Mathematics is four courses: AA HL, AA SL, AI HL, AI SL — match the tutor to the course
  • AA SL Paper 1 is non-calculator; every AI paper permits a graphic display calculator
  • The Exploration is 20% of the grade at both levels and is marked on criteria A to E
  • Delivery is one-to-one online; no tutor is sent to a UAE address

The search is for an IB maths tutor in City Walk, but the question underneath it is narrower: who near here has taught my child's exact maths course, and can they get to us at a time that works? The second half of that question is the one that fails. City Walk has no secondary school inside it, so every family is already driving outward once a day, and a tutor who also has to drive in is competing with the same roads at the same hour.

Answer the first half properly and the second half stops mattering. IB Mathematics is two courses, not one. Analysis and Approaches is built on algebraic fluency, proof and calculus, and its SL Paper 1 is sat with no calculator at all. Applications and Interpretation is built on modelling, statistics and interpretation, with a graphic display calculator permitted throughout. Both exist at Higher and Standard Level, which gives four distinct courses with four distinct paper structures. The useful tutor is the one who has taught the one your child sits, through a full cycle, including the Exploration.

That tutor is not reliably available within a short drive of Al Wasl Road, and pretending otherwise is how families end up paying in-home rates for a generalist. IB Gram's answer is to drop the geography: lessons are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, so the choice is made on who teaches the course rather than on who lives nearby. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a City Walk address — home visits are something we run only in India, and saying so plainly is more useful to you than implying otherwise.

What you get instead is a specialist, a fixed weekly slot that does not move because of traffic, and a session that runs its full length even when the car gets home late. The rest of this page is the evidence for that, laid out as comparisons: this area against the next one over, AA against AI, online against the in-home market at published rates, and the two Diploma years counted backwards from the May session.

02

City Walk against the districts next door, on the only measures that matter

Families compare neighbourhoods as if tuition quality varied by district. It does not. What varies is housing stock, school direction and the realistic start time of a weekday lesson. City Walk is apartments with no on-site secondary school, so the school run goes outward to Al Safa, Umm Suqeim or Al Jaddaf. Jumeirah 1 is villas with primaries inside the district. Al Safa is the school belt itself. Each of those produces a different evening timetable and the same tuition conclusion.

The table below sets them side by side. Read the last column first, because that is where the decision is: in every one of these districts, the pool of Mathematics AA HL and AI HL specialists reachable by car in time for a weekday lesson is small, and it is the same small pool. Moving house would not fix it. Removing the drive does.

The second thing the table shows is why travel cost is not a rounding error here. A tutor crossing Sheikh Zayed Road between a 4pm booking in Al Safa and a 6pm booking in City Walk is pricing two hours of their evening into your one-hour lesson, and the published in-home band in Dubai reflects that. Bestimate's 2026 rate table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 and independent home tutors at AED 200-500, against AED 150-300 for a qualified subject tutor online. The gap is largely the car.

The third thing is scheduling resilience. An apartment family in City Walk and a villa family in Jumeirah 2 both lose a lesson when a tutor is stuck on Al Wasl Road. Online, a late arrival costs the first few minutes of a session rather than the session. Over a two-year Diploma that difference is measured in whole lessons, not minutes.

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: the choice behind the grade

This is the decision that produces most of the October panic in Year 12. A student picks a maths course in the spring of Year 11 on the strength of an IGCSE grade and a conversation, discovers in the first term that the course does not reward what they are good at, and the family starts looking for a tutor. Understanding the difference is therefore part of the tutoring, not a preliminary to it.

Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic route. It expects fluent manipulation, and at HL it expects proof: induction, contradiction, and the discipline to write a chain of reasoning that holds. SL Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, so weak algebra is exposed directly rather than hidden behind a graphic display calculator. Applications and Interpretation is the modelling route. Every paper permits a calculator, and the marks move away from manipulation toward choosing a model, justifying the choice, and interpreting what the numbers mean in a real context. Students who assume the calculator makes AI the soft option discover that unexplained correct answers score poorly.

Both courses share the same five topic areas — number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus — but they weight them very differently and ask different things of them. AA treats calculus as the centre of the course; AI treats statistics as the centre. Both end in a 20% Exploration. The HL versions of both add Paper 3, worth 20%, which at AA is an extended-reasoning paper and at AI is an extended-modelling one.

For a City Walk family the practical consequence is tutor matching. A tutor whose strength is AA HL calculus is not the right person for an AI SL student losing marks on regression interpretation, and vice versa. Because lessons are online, you are not forced to accept whichever of the two is available locally. The table sets the two courses against each other on the measures that change how many hours of support a student needs.

04

Where IB Maths marks actually go missing

  • Paper 1 pace: the last two questions are the ones that disappear
  • Command terms: show, hence, deduce, justify and write down are not interchangeable
  • Calculator habit mismatched to the paper, in both AA and AI
  • Exploration questions chosen too wide to finish inside the word count
  • Premature rounding and missing units, a mark at a time
  • No reflection in the Exploration, which costs criterion D outright

Grades in IB Mathematics are rarely lost to not knowing the content. They are lost to a small set of repeatable, diagnosable habits, and naming them is most of what a first session does. The most expensive one is time management on Paper 1. A student who can do every question but cannot do them at the required pace loses marks on the last two questions of every paper they sit, mock after mock, and reads it as a content problem.

The second is command terms. The IB uses a controlled vocabulary and means something specific by each word. 'Write down' expects no working and no credit for it. 'Show that' expects a route to a given answer and awards method marks along it. 'Hence' means the previous result must be used; 'hence or otherwise' means it need not be. 'Justify' expects a reason attached to a claim. Students who treat these as synonyms give answers that are mathematically right and mark-scheme wrong.

The third is calculator discipline, in both directions. AA SL candidates practise with a graphic display calculator all term and then sit Paper 1 without one. AI candidates lean on the calculator so heavily that they write down a regression equation without saying what it means, and the interpretation marks go unclaimed. Both are training problems, and both are fixable in a handful of sessions once identified.

The fourth is the Exploration, which is 20% of the grade and the only component a student fully controls. Most lost marks there are structural, not mathematical: a question too broad to answer, mathematics below the level of the course, or no genuine reflection. The fifth is accuracy convention — premature rounding, missing units, and answers given to the wrong degree of accuracy, each costing single marks that add up across a paper.

05

What IB maths tuition costs around City Walk, counted by the month

Start with the monthly figure, because that is the number a family actually budgets. One sixty-minute session a week is roughly four sessions a month. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates put a weekly one-hour arrangement at AED 240-600 a month for budget tutoring, AED 600-1,200 for mid-tier, and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Those are the brackets a City Walk parent is choosing between, and the exam-year bracket is the one an HL Diploma student in their final term normally sits in.

Translate that to hourly and the market splits by tier and format. Published figures from providers in this market: EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52 at the budget online end; Unitors lists IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase quotes around AED 270; Bestimate's table puts specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tuition at AED 200-450 and above, and in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 with independent home tutors reaching AED 500. Monthly packages advertised in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Three things follow. The travel premium is real and it is visible: the same tier of tutor costs more in your sitting room than on a screen, and the difference is the car, not the teaching. The budget end is cheap because it is usually a university student rather than someone who has taught the course, which is fine for arithmetic practice and poor value for AA HL Paper 3. And the top of the band buys subject specificity, not a guarantee — nobody can promise a grade, and anyone who does is telling you something about themselves.

What a parent can verify independently: ask which course the tutor has taught, AA or AI, and at which level; ask how many full two-year cycles; ask them to explain how criterion E is awarded in the Exploration. Those three answers separate a specialist from a generalist faster than any price does. IB Gram does not publish a rate card on these pages — the figures above are market observation with their sources named, and our own pricing is set after the free trial lesson so it matches the actual subject, level and intensity your child needs.

The Mathematics Exploration, criterion by criterion

The Exploration is 20% of the final grade in all four maths courses, it is marked out of 20 against five lettered criteria, and it is the only part of the course where a student can bank marks months before the exams. It is also the part most often left until the deadline is close enough to make a good topic impossible.

The criteria are published and specific. Criterion A, presentation, is worth 4 marks and rewards a coherent, organised, concise piece of work. Criterion B, mathematical communication, is worth 4 and rewards correct notation, defined variables, and consistent use of symbols and terminology. Criterion C, personal engagement, is worth 3 and rewards genuine independent thinking rather than a declaration of interest. Criterion D, reflection, is worth 3 and is the most commonly lost: it asks for critical reflection on results and limitations, not a summary. Criterion E, use of mathematics, is worth 6, the largest single block, and rewards mathematics that is relevant, correct and at a level commensurate with the course.

Criterion E is where course level bites. A piece of work that would be commensurate for AI SL is not commensurate for AA HL, and a student who writes a competent statistics exploration for an HL analysis course caps their own marks. Topic triage is therefore the first job, before any data is gathered or any writing starts.

What a tutor may do is bounded by IB academic-honesty rules, and the boundary is not vague. A tutor may teach the mathematics, discuss whether a question is answerable, explain what each criterion asks for, and give feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor may not write any part of it, supply the analysis, or edit it to completion. Every word must be the student's own, because the consequence of a breach falls on the student's diploma. Any provider offering to supply a finished Internal Assessment is offering your child an academic-misconduct finding.

Counting the two Diploma years backwards

Most families plan forward from today and run out of time. Planning backwards from the exam session shows immediately which weeks are load-bearing. UAE schools sit the May session, and the Diploma calendar is set in three layers: the IB sets the session and the upload deadlines, your school's coordinator sets the internal deadlines that actually constrain your child, and the family sets everything else.

Two cautions before any date is written down. IB exam and results dates are not restated on this page: ibo.org blocks automated retrieval, so nothing here is confirmed from the IB itself, and a date a parent plans around has to be read from the IB or your school's coordinator rather than from a tutoring website. Where a sibling sits a British-curriculum qualification alongside, Cambridge International runs June and November series for UAE candidates, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November — for Pearson, the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, with November 2025 results having reached students on 22 January 2026. Always open the live official timetable rather than trusting a restated date.

The structure that follows is therefore relative, not calendrical, and it is the structure that matters. Work backwards: the final term is paper technique and nothing else; the term before it is the Exploration finished and out of the way; the term before that is the one where a weak topic from the first year has to be rebuilt, because there is no room for it later. A student who arrives at the final term still owing an Exploration draft has lost the use of their most productive weeks.

The eight-week horizon is worth naming separately because it is the window families most often ask about. Eight weeks of weekly one-to-one is enough to rebuild one or two topics to exam standard and to fix paper technique. It is not enough to cover two years of HL calculus from a standing start, and a tutor who says otherwise is selling you something. The honest version is that eight weeks moves a specific, diagnosed weakness; two terms moves a grade.

KHDA, your school report, and what neither tells you about maths

  • A KHDA inspection band rates a school, not a maths department or a course
  • Ask for component marks and the predicted grade, not the report letter
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are mandatory in Dubai private schools (KHDA)
  • Private tutors need a MoHRE permit, free for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No published fine schedule exists, so treat any quoted penalty figure with suspicion

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects annually and publishes a band from Outstanding down to Very Weak. It is genuinely useful context — and it says almost nothing about whether your child will get a 6 in Mathematics AA HL.

The reason is scale. An inspection band is a judgement about a whole school across all phases and subjects. A City Walk family choosing between an Outstanding school in Al Safa and a Very Good one in Umm Suqeim is comparing institutional averages, while the thing that decides a maths grade is one department, one teacher, one course and one student's algebra. A school can be Outstanding and still be thin on Analysis and Approaches HL in a particular year.

School reports have the opposite problem: they are specific but comparative. A B grade tells you where your child sits against their class, not where they sit against the IB's 1-7 boundaries. The number that matters is the predicted grade and the component marks behind it — what the last mock scored on Paper 1 against Paper 2, how the Exploration draft reads against criteria A to E. Those are the figures worth asking the subject teacher for, and they are what a tutor should be working from.

Two further regulatory points City Walk families should know. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, under KHDA's published requirements, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes prohibited. And anyone providing private tuition in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years; those operating without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so no amount should be quoted to you. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, IB or Cambridge accreditation and does not claim any.

What happens when the specialist you need is not free

  • Tightest coverage: AA HL and Paper 3 work in the final term before May
  • Early-morning pre-school slots are the thinnest part of the week
  • A named alternative beats a generalist billed as a specialist
  • The free trial is with the proposed tutor, before any payment

No tutoring service covers every course at every level at every hour, and the ones that imply otherwise are the ones that put a generalist in front of an HL candidate. It is worth saying plainly what happens in the gaps, because this is the part of the market nobody discloses.

The common shortages are predictable. Mathematics AA HL in the final term before the May session is the tightest, because every school's HL cohort wants the same eight weeks. Paper 3 coaching is tight for the same reason. Early-morning slots before school are thin. And the week either side of a school's internal Exploration deadline sees a spike in requests that no pool absorbs instantly.

What we do about it: say so, and offer a real alternative rather than a substitute pretending to be the thing you asked for. That might be a different slot with the specialist you wanted, a different specialist with equivalent course experience, or a short diagnostic session now with the weekly slot starting at a named date. What it is not is a generalist maths tutor billed as an AA HL specialist. Because delivery is online, the pool is not limited to people who can reach City Walk by car, which is why a match is usually possible within a few days rather than a few weeks.

The free trial lesson exists for this reason too. It is one lesson, before payment, with the tutor proposed for your child — not a sales call and not a demonstration by someone else. If the match is wrong, say so and we change it. If no suitable specialist is available for the course and level you need, the honest answer is that, told early, rather than a booking that wastes a term.

Where we tutor

City Walk and the districts around it

City Walk is bounded by Al Safa Street, Al Wasl Road and Sheikh Zayed Road, and every family here is within a short drive of several school clusters. Below is what each neighbouring district actually does to a tuition timetable, which is the only local detail that changes your decision.

City Walk

Low-rise apartments and townhouses with retail at street level. No large private school inside the development, so every school run is outward. Lesson slots from 4.30pm onward are the realistic ones on a weekday.

Al Wasl

Immediately inland, villas and compounds along Al Wasl Road. Shares City Walk's school catchment almost exactly, which is why the two areas get identical tutoring advice despite different housing.

Jumeirah 1

Villas north-west toward the coast, with primary schools inside the district. Families here have space for a visiting tutor and still hit the same shortage of Mathematics AA HL specialists.

Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3

Deeper along the coast road, with several of the British primaries and the Jumeirah College catchment. Travel between here and City Walk looks trivial on a map and is not at 3.30pm.

Al Safa and Al Manara

The school belt south of Al Wasl Road. A tutor booked for 4pm in Al Safa and 6pm in City Walk is making a bet on Sheikh Zayed Road, and that bet is what the parent pays for.

Umm Suqeim

Home to several of the IB Diploma options Diploma students from City Walk commute to. A 5pm pick-up here often means a 6pm lesson, not a 4.30pm one.

La Mer and Pearl Jumeira

Coastal developments either side of City Walk, with apartment stock and the same absence of an on-site secondary school. Families here ask the same questions as City Walk and get the same answers.

Al Satwa and Za'abeel

Directly east, denser and older, with quick access to the Al Jaddaf and Oud Metha IB schools. Useful to know because an eastward school run changes which evening slot is usable.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in City Walk

The Al Safa and Jumeirah school belt

The schools most City Walk secondary students attend, almost all British-curriculum running IGCSE at 16. Students we support sit Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1 here and then split between A Level and the Diploma, which is where the Analysis and Approaches decision lands.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Horizon English School
  • Jumeirah Primary School
  • Safa Community School
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Jumeirah
  • Dubai College

The IB Diploma options City Walk students commute to

There is no IB Diploma school inside City Walk, so Diploma families here travel. Each of these runs the Diploma and is reachable from City Walk, and each sets its own internal Exploration deadlines, which is why a tutor has to work to your school's calendar rather than a generic one.

  • Raffles World Academy
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Universal American School
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Deira International School

Schools are named to describe the educational context around City Walk; no affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any school or school group is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the course, not just the subject

Say whether it is Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard Level, which year of the Diploma, and which school in or around City Walk. Those four facts determine which specialists are even candidates, and they take thirty seconds to give.

  2. 02

Send the last piece of real evidence

A mock paper with the marks on it, a recent class test, or the Exploration draft as it stands. One marked paper tells a maths tutor more than a paragraph of description, because it shows where the marks went rather than how the term felt.

  3. 03

Meet one tutor in a free trial lesson

A full one-to-one session over live video with the specialist we propose, before any payment. Your child does maths with them for an hour. At the end you know whether the explanation lands, which is the only test that matters at this stage.

  4. 04

Fix the weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time

Choose a time that clears the school run from Al Safa or Umm Suqeim — usually 4.30pm or later on a weekday. The slot is held for the term. Ramadan timings shift to post-Iftar sessions, and holiday intensives run at whatever hour suits the family.

  5. 05

Work a week ahead of the school's scheme

The tutor works from your school's own sequence and internal deadlines, staying slightly ahead of class rather than repairing behind it. Each session ends with a written note naming the next target, so you can see the plan without attending the lesson.

  6. 06

    Review against marks, not impressions

Every few weeks, check the position against component marks: Paper 1 against Paper 2, Exploration draft against criteria A to E. If the numbers are not moving, the plan changes or the tutor does. That decision is yours and it costs nothing to make.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The tutor is matched to the course code

Not to 'IB maths'. A student sitting Applications and Interpretation SL and losing marks on regression interpretation gets someone who has taught that course and marked that Exploration, rather than whoever on a roster had the word maths beside their name.

Geography stops being a filter

City Walk's constraint was never a shortage of tutors in Dubai; it was a shortage reachable by car at 4.30pm. Online delivery removes the filter, so the choice is made on who has taught the course rather than on who lives near Al Wasl Road.

The session runs its full length

A lesson that starts at a fixed time and is not shortened to let a tutor reach their next booking in Jumeirah 3. Late home from the school run costs the first few minutes, not the hour, and nothing on the invoice is paying for a car.

Academic honesty is a stated boundary

A tutor teaches the mathematics, explains the Exploration criteria and gives feedback on the student's own draft. No part of an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or TOK essay is written for a student. The consequences of a breach land on your child's diploma, which settles the question.

Every number on this page carries its source

AED figures are attributed to the provider or market table that published them. Regulatory statements cite u.ae, KHDA or MoHRE. Where something cannot be verified — IB session dates among them — the page says so rather than printing a number you might plan around.

A free trial before any money moves

One full lesson with the proposed tutor, at no cost and with no card required, so the decision is made on an hour of real teaching. If the match is wrong, it changes. If no suitable specialist is free, we say that early rather than booking you in anyway.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in City Walk: your questions answered

Can I get an IB maths tutor who comes to our apartment in City Walk?+

Not through IB Gram. We teach UAE students one-to-one over live video and do not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India. In practice this works in City Walk's favour. The in-home market here is limited to tutors who can reach Al Wasl Road by car at 4.30pm, which for Mathematics AA HL is a very short list. Online, you choose from every AA and AI specialist we work with, the lesson starts on time regardless of Sheikh Zayed Road, and nothing in the price is paying for travel. Published market figures put in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 against AED 150-300 for a qualified online subject tutor, and that gap is largely the car.

Is a tutor in Jumeirah 1 or Al Safa better placed than an online tutor for a City Walk student?+

Better placed geographically, no better placed mathematically. The pool of Mathematics AA HL and AI HL specialists who can reach any of these districts in time for a weekday lesson is the same small pool, whether you live in a City Walk apartment or a Jumeirah 1 villa. Being two kilometres closer to Al Safa does not change which courses a tutor has taught. What it changes is the chance that the lesson starts late and finishes early because the tutor has another booking to reach. Online removes both the drive and the travel premium, and lets you select on course experience instead of catchment.

Which IB maths course should my child take, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation?+

It depends on what they are good at and where they are going. Analysis and Approaches is the algebra, proof and calculus route, and its SL Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, so weak manipulation is exposed directly. Applications and Interpretation is the modelling and statistics route, with a calculator permitted throughout and the marks sitting in interpretation and justification. Engineering, physics and most mathematics degrees expect AA; many economics, business, design and social-science routes accept AI happily. Check the published entry requirements of the specific universities your child is considering, because the requirement varies by course, not just by country.

How many marks is the IB Maths Exploration worth and how is it marked?+

Twenty per cent of the final subject grade, in all four maths courses, marked out of 20 against five lettered criteria. Criterion A, presentation, carries 4 marks. Criterion B, mathematical communication, carries 4. Criterion C, personal engagement, carries 3. Criterion D, reflection, carries 3 and is the one most often lost, because students summarise their results instead of evaluating them. Criterion E, use of mathematics, carries 6 and is the largest block; it requires mathematics that is relevant, correct and at a level commensurate with the course. A statistics exploration written for an HL analysis course caps its own criterion E marks.

Where exactly is the line between coaching my child's Maths Exploration and doing it for them?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may teach the mathematics involved, help decide whether a question is answerable in the available space, explain exactly what each criterion asks for, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not write any section, supply the analysis or edit the work to completion. Every word must be the student's own, because an academic-honesty finding falls on the student's diploma rather than on the tutor. Any service offering to supply a finished Internal Assessment is offering your child a malpractice investigation, whatever it is called on their website.

What does IB maths tuition cost per month for a City Walk family?+

Budget monthly first. One weekly sixty-minute session is about four sessions a month, and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates put that at AED 240-600 a month for budget tutoring, AED 600-1,200 for mid-tier and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Advertised packages in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those are market figures from the providers named, not IB Gram's prices. Ours are quoted after the free trial lesson, once the course, level and intensity are known.

My child is in Year 12 and already behind in Maths AA HL. Is it too late?+

No, and the first term of Year 12 is the cheapest time to fix it. The usual cause is specific rather than general: the jump from IGCSE 0580 Extended into AA HL assumes a level of algebraic fluency the IGCSE course did not need, so the student is slow rather than lost. That is a diagnosable, fixable problem, and fixing it in Year 12 means the Exploration and Paper 3 work in Year 13 land on solid ground. Leaving it until the final term means doing repair work in the weeks that should be paper technique, which is the expensive version of the same job.

How many sessions a week does an HL maths student usually need?+

One a week through the course, moving to two in the final term or around a specific component. One weekly session works because it keeps the student slightly ahead of the school's scheme of work rather than repairing behind it, and the gap never becomes a backlog. Two a week is useful when there is a named target: a Paper 3 block for HL candidates, an Exploration deadline, or a specific topic being rebuilt from the first year. More than two is rarely productive, because the limiting factor becomes the student's own practice time rather than teaching time.

What is Paper 3 and why do HL students lose marks on it?+

Paper 3 is sat only by Higher Level candidates and is worth 20% of the HL grade. It consists of a small number of extended-response questions rather than many short ones. In Analysis and Approaches it rewards sustained proof and reasoning held together across several parts; in Applications and Interpretation it rewards extended modelling in an unfamiliar context. Students lose marks because the skill is different from Papers 1 and 2: an answer has to be built and maintained, and a single early error can propagate. It needs its own dedicated practice block, typically two to three months before the session.

How do online maths lessons actually work for a student in Dubai?+

One-to-one over live video, in a slot fixed in Gulf Standard Time, with a shared on-screen whiteboard both tutor and student write on. The tutor sees the working as it happens, which is the part that matters in maths: a wrong answer is useful only if you can see how it was reached. Sessions can be recorded on request so the student can revisit a derivation. Past-paper work is done on screen or on paper and photographed in, and the mark scheme is read through afterwards, which is where a large share of the gain comes from.

Do private tutors in Dubai need a licence or permit?+

Yes. Private tuition in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and, according to u.ae, is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Anyone offering private tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so be sceptical of any specific penalty figure you see quoted on a tutoring site.

Which schools do City Walk students usually attend for the IB Diploma?+

There is no IB Diploma school inside City Walk, so Diploma families commute outward. Options reachable from here include Raffles World Academy in Umm Suqeim, Swiss International Scientific School Dubai in Al Jaddaf, GEMS World Academy Dubai, Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Universal American School and Deira International School. The British-curriculum schools nearer at hand, including Jumeirah College and Horizon English School, run IGCSE at 16. Schools are named here as context for the area, not as partners or clients; each one sets its own internal Exploration deadlines, which is what a tutor has to work to.

Can lessons be scheduled around Ramadan and the Dubai school calendar?+

Yes, and they should be. During Ramadan most families move sessions to post-Iftar times, and shorter, later lessons work better than the usual late-afternoon slot. Dubai's school holidays are the other scheduling question: a holiday is the best available window for an intensive block, because there is no homework competing for the evening. Our tutors work across time zones, so a family travelling in the summer or over Eid can keep a weekly slot running from wherever they are, converted to local time rather than cancelled.

What should I ask a maths tutor before booking, to tell a specialist from a generalist?+

Three questions separate them quickly. First, which course have you taught, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and at which level? Second, how many full two-year cycles have you taken a cohort through? Third, how is criterion E awarded in the Exploration, and what makes mathematics commensurate with the course? A specialist answers the third one immediately and with examples. A generalist talks about confidence and rapport. Then ask what the tutor cannot do, and listen for a clear statement that they will not write any part of the Internal Assessment.

When do UAE IB students sit their exams, and where should I check the dates?+

UAE schools sit the May session. We deliberately do not restate IB exam or results dates on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated retrieval and no IB date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself. Get those dates from your school's IB coordinator or from ibo.org directly, and plan around those. If a sibling sits British-curriculum qualifications, Cambridge International runs June and November series for UAE candidates, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable ending 19 November 2026. Always open the official live timetable rather than a restated version.

Start with one lesson and one marked paper

If your child is sitting IB Mathematics at a school near City Walk and the grade is not where it should be, the quickest useful step is small. Send the last marked mock paper and say which course it is — Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard Level. We will match a specialist who has taught that course through a full cycle and set up a free trial lesson, one-to-one over live video, at a time that clears the school run. After the hour you will know whether the explanation lands. If it does not, we change the tutor. If no suitable specialist is free, we will tell you that rather than book you in regardless.
