IGCSE Home Tutor in City Walk

Hiring an IGCSE home tutor in City Walk goes wrong most often for a reason nobody mentions on a landing page: the family does not know which board their child is entered with. Two schools ten minutes apart, one in Al Safa and one in Jumeirah, can teach the same subject under different syllabus codes, different tiers and different practical arrangements. This page sorts that out first, then prices the options and explains why lessons run online.

  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel syllabus codes set out side by side
  • Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher tiers explained with grade ranges
  • The five-subject Ministry of Education equivalency rule, sourced
  • Online one-to-one delivery; no UAE home visits, and we say so plainly

IB & IGCSE in City Walk

Before you hire anyone, find out which syllabus your child is on

City Walk families mostly use schools in Al Safa, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, and those schools do not all enter students with the same examination board. One campus runs Cambridge IGCSE, the next runs Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, and a third enters mathematics with one board and the sciences with another. The subjects have the same names and the same reputations, and almost nothing else in common at the level a tutor works at: different syllabus codes, different paper structures, different tiering rules, different grade ranges and, in the sciences, a completely different approach to assessing practical work.

That single piece of information is worth more than any amount of neighbourhood searching. A tutor hired without it will teach the subject competently and will prepare the wrong paper. A Cambridge physics candidate sits either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper on top of the theory papers; a Pearson International GCSE physics candidate sits neither, because practical skills are assessed inside the written papers. A tutor who does not know which of those applies cannot prioritise correctly, and the family discovers the mismatch in a mock.

The second thing to establish is the tier. Cambridge syllabuses in mathematics and the sciences run Core and Extended routes, and the route determines the grade range a candidate can be awarded; Pearson mathematics runs Foundation and Higher tiers with the same consequence. A student sitting a Core or Foundation paper cannot reach the top grades however well they perform, and a student wrongly placed on Extended or Higher loses marks on content they were never going to secure. Tier placement is a school decision made on evidence, it can sometimes be revisited, and a parent who does not know which tier their child is on is not in a position to discuss it.

Delivery, stated at the top rather than discovered later. IB Gram teaches UAE families one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. There are no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. A City Walk family is therefore matched to a tutor who has taught the exact syllabus code their child is entered with, instead of to whichever tutor is prepared to drive to Al Wasl Road at five o'clock. Published Dubai in-home rates run AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 150 to 300 for qualified subject tutors working online, and that gap is a journey rather than a better lesson.

What follows is the detail a parent can act on today: the board comparison with the actual syllabus codes, the tier rules and the grade ranges attached to them, how to read a Dubai IGCSE report across two different grading scales, how practical science is handled when tuition is online, the Ministry of Education's five-subject equivalency rule including the thing a ranking competitor gets wrong, how many subjects it is sensible to fund at once, and the limits of what we will claim.

Mathematics and the separate sciences run Core and Extended routes with different grade ranges. Sciences add either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper.

Cambridge candidates in the UAE sit the June and November series. Every examination centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. A City Walk parent should get the zone-correct timetable from the school rather than from any website, including this one.

What IGCSE leads into locally

Most schools in this corridor split at sixteen into A Levels or the IB Diploma. Extended or Higher tier content is what both routes assume: the algebra, the graph work and the quantitative science all reappear immediately and are not retaught. A Core or Foundation background is workable for some routes and a genuine obstacle for others, which makes tier placement a decision with a two-year shadow.

One IB continuum school sits in Al Safa within a short drive of City Walk, with others in Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim, and the British-curriculum campuses nearby run A Levels. Families here therefore have both routes inside the same commute, which makes the Year 11 decision real rather than nominal and makes mathematics tier the single most consequential IGCSE choice.

MOEAt the end of school

Ministry of Education equivalency

The federal process that recognises a foreign secondary certificate for use in the UAE. For the British track, a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and submit proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count. One ranking competitor states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which is not what the published rule says. Equivalency is a process families complete through the official channel; IB Gram neither performs it nor guarantees any outcome in it, and no tutoring is required for it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the IGCSE subjects City Walk families ask for, named with the codes that matter. Where Cambridge and Pearson differ materially, the difference is stated rather than smoothed over.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core or Extended · Pearson 4MA1 Foundation or Higher

The subject where tier matters most. Cambridge Core candidates sit papers 1 and 3 and are eligible for a restricted grade range; Extended candidates sit papers 2 and 4 for the full range. Pearson Mathematics A splits Foundation and Higher with the same effect. Algebraic fluency is the single best predictor of what comes next at sixteen.

International Mathematics

Cambridge 0607 Core or Extended

A separate Cambridge syllabus, often used by IB continuum schools because it includes a graphing-calculator paper and an investigation. Confusing it with 0580 is a common and expensive error: the papers, the calculator policy and the assessment style differ, and a tutor prepared for one is not prepared for the other.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

Cambridge candidates sit theory papers plus either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper; Pearson candidates sit two written papers with practical skills examined inside them. Electricity and the wave vocabulary are where marks go in both. The practical arrangement is the first thing a tutor needs to know.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

Mole arithmetic, bonding, rates and organic nomenclature, with the same practical distinction between the boards. The quantitative chain, moles into concentration into titration into yield, is where a student cannot locate their own weak link, and it is the clearest case for paid one-to-one time in either syllabus.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1

Heavy recall, precise terminology and a surprising amount of data interpretation. The highest-yield work is command-term discipline: a student who answers 'describe' when the paper asks 'explain' loses marks on every paper regardless of how much content they have learned. Diagram labelling conventions differ slightly between boards.

Combined and double-award science

Cambridge 0653 or 0654 · Pearson 4SD0

The route for students taking science as one or two subjects rather than three. Content is reduced rather than easier, and the decision matters for sixth-form entry: some A Level and Diploma science courses expect separate sciences. Worth checking against the school's own published entry requirements before accepting the default.

English Language and Literature

Cambridge 0500 or 0510 · Pearson 4EA1 and 4ET1

First Language English and English as a Second Language are different qualifications with different expectations, and schools in this corridor enter students for both depending on background. Literature is a separate entry at Pearson. The marks move fastest on structure and on answering the question asked, not on vocabulary.

Business, Economics and ICT

Cambridge 0450, 0455, 0417 · Pearson 4BS1, 4EC1, 4IT1

Popular option choices in this corridor. All three reward case-study discipline and application of terminology to the specific scenario, which is a teachable technique rather than a content problem. ICT and computer science are distinct syllabuses and students sometimes do not realise which they are entered for.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies

KHDA requirement · all Dubai private schools

Mandatory in every Dubai private school whatever curriculum is licensed, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab pupils. They sit alongside the IGCSE programme, occupy real timetable time, and are explicitly excluded from the five subjects the Ministry of Education counts for equivalency, which surprises a great many families.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways IGCSE support is bought in this corridor, and the one IB Gram provides. The shape matters less than whether the tutor is working to the right syllabus code, which is why that question comes first in every one of them.

Weekly one-to-one online, syllabus-code specific

A fixed weekday session in Gulf Standard Time, planned against the exact syllabus the school has entered. The tutor works from the student's own scripts and the board's published mark scheme, so the hour prepares the paper the student will actually sit rather than a generic version of the subject. Market rate for qualified subject tutors working this way is AED 150 to 300 an hour.

  • Matched to the syllabus code and tier, not just the subject
  • Past papers drawn from the correct board and series
  • Written note after each session naming the next two priorities

Subject-count triage before the exam year

Most IGCSE students take eight to ten subjects and no family can fund tutoring in all of them. A single diagnostic block establishes which two or three subjects are genuinely at risk, which are safe, and which need nothing more than timed practice. This is the cheapest useful purchase available to an IGCSE family in this corridor.

  • One session per candidate subject, then a ranked recommendation
  • Explicit advice on which subjects to stop paying for
  • Based on the student's own marked work rather than on predicted grades

Practical and alternative-to-practical preparation

Where the school enters a Cambridge science practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper, that component needs its own work: apparatus diagrams, tabulation conventions, reading scales, plotting and the specific phrasing the mark scheme rewards. Pearson International GCSE candidates need the same skills tested inside their written papers.

  • Paper-specific preparation once the entry is confirmed
  • Tabulation, plotting and scale-reading conventions taught explicitly
  • Works from the board's published specimen and past materials

November series and resit planning

Both Cambridge and Pearson run a November series alongside the June one, which gives a student a genuine second attempt without repeating a year. Planning a resit properly means deciding in good time, confirming the entry route with the school, and working from the correct zone-specific timetable.

  • Entry decisions made with the school, not assumed
  • Short, focused blocks rather than a repeat of the whole course
  • Timetables taken from the official board PDF for the correct zone

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in City Walk

01

What an IGCSE home-tutor search in City Walk is really deciding

  • Four facts first: board, syllabus code, tier, optional papers
  • The school's option documentation holds all four
  • Triage by subject before funding anything

Parents in this corridor type this phrase for an understandable reason: in most places they have lived, tutoring arrives at the door. The question underneath it is narrower and more answerable, which is whether anybody can prepare their child for the specific papers their school has entered them for. Those are different questions, and separating them changes what a family should spend money on. The second question has a precise answer and it starts with four pieces of information the school holds.

Those four are the board, the syllabus code, the tier and the optional papers. A Year 10 chemistry student might be a Cambridge 0620 Extended candidate sitting the alternative-to-practical paper, or a Pearson 4CH1 candidate with practical skills assessed inside the written papers. Both are called IGCSE chemistry. Almost nothing else about them is the same from a tutor's point of view: the papers differ, the mark schemes differ, the practical arrangements differ, and the past-paper library a tutor should be working from differs entirely. A family that hires on proximity and discovers this in February has paid for the wrong preparation.

The third thing worth separating out is how many subjects to fund. An IGCSE candidate typically takes eight to ten, which makes blanket tutoring unaffordable and unnecessary. The useful approach is triage: establish from marked work which two or three subjects are genuinely at risk, which are safe, and which need timed practice rather than teaching. That decision saves more money than any rate negotiation, and it is the subject of its own section further down. Everything on this page is written to make those three decisions concrete rather than to persuade anyone of anything.

02

Cambridge against Pearson Edexcel, with the codes attached

Exactly one syllabus code appeared across the entire seven-page area cluster researched for this project, which is a remarkable omission given that the code is the first thing a tutor needs. The table below sets out the pairs a City Walk family is most likely to meet, with what differs for tutoring purposes. Read the last column first: that is where the money and the preparation time actually go.

Two differences matter more than the rest. The first is the practical arrangement in the sciences. Cambridge candidates sit either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper in addition to the theory papers, and that component has its own skills: apparatus diagrams, tabulation conventions, reading scales to the right precision, plotting, and the specific language the mark scheme rewards for a conclusion. Pearson International GCSE candidates do not sit a separate practical component; those skills are examined inside the written papers, which changes how they should be practised but not whether they should be.

The second is mathematics. Cambridge runs two separate mathematics syllabuses, 0580 Mathematics and 0607 International Mathematics, and they are not interchangeable. International Mathematics includes a graphing-calculator paper and an investigation, and it appears most often at IB continuum schools, several of which are within a short drive of City Walk. Pearson runs Mathematics A, code 4MA1, with Foundation and Higher tiers, and Mathematics B as a separate specification. A family that tells a tutor 'IGCSE maths' and nothing more has given them a one-in-three chance of preparing the right papers.

03

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher: what the tier actually decides

Tiering is the most consequential thing on a Year 10 option form and the least explained. In Cambridge mathematics and the separate sciences, candidates follow either the Core route or the Extended route, and the route determines which papers they sit and which grades they are eligible to be awarded. Core candidates cannot reach the top grades however well they perform; Extended candidates can, and will meet content that a Core candidate never sees. Pearson Mathematics A works the same way through Foundation and Higher tiers.

The practical consequence for a family is twofold. A student placed on the lower route who is capable of the higher one has a ceiling imposed on them that will matter at sixteen, because both A Level and IB Diploma science and mathematics courses assume higher-tier content and do not reteach it. A student placed on the higher route who is not ready loses marks across papers designed to stretch the top of the cohort, and often ends with a lower grade than the lower route would have produced. Neither error is the school acting carelessly; both come from evidence that was thin at the time the decision was made.

What a parent can do is specific. Find out which tier your child is on, ask what evidence the placement was based on, and ask when and whether it can be revisited, because entry deadlines sit well before the examinations and the window is finite. Then make sure any tutoring is aimed at the right route: an Extended candidate drilled on Core content is wasting the hour, and a Core candidate taught Extended material is being demoralised for no mark. The table sets out the comparison in the terms that matter for planning.

Reading a Dubai IGCSE report across two grading scales

  • Establish the scale before comparing anything with a neighbour
  • Year 10 internal grades are generated in conditions a real paper does not use
  • Ask which paper loses most marks, and why, rather than asking for a prediction
  • A two-grade drop at a mock is usually conditions, not decline

Parents in this corridor compare notes constantly and the comparison breaks down because the scales differ. Pearson International GCSE reports on a 9 to 1 numeric scale. Cambridge reports on an A* to G scale for many syllabuses and on a 9 to 1 scale for others depending on the syllabus and the region of entry. Two children at neighbouring schools can come home with a 7 and a B and nobody can say which is stronger without knowing the board and the syllabus. The first question for any Dubai IGCSE report is therefore which scale it is on.

The second question is what the number or letter is actually reporting. A school report in Year 10 is usually a working-at or predicted grade generated from internal assessments, not an examination grade, and the two are produced in different conditions. Internal assessments are often open-book, sat in a classroom, and marked by the class teacher against a mark scheme they also taught from. A terminal examination is none of those. A student who holds a comfortable internal grade and drops two grades in a mock has usually met the terminal conditions for the first time rather than declined.

The third question is the one worth asking at the next parents' evening, and it is more useful than asking how the child is doing. Ask the subject teacher which paper the child would currently lose most marks on and what the specific loss is: content not covered, technique, timing, or precision of language. Teachers can answer that because they mark the scripts. The answer converts a grade into a target a weekly session can be built around, and it also reveals when the answer is that nothing needs buying because the student simply needs to sit more papers under time.

05

How science practicals are handled when tuition is online

  • Practical work happens at school; tutoring prepares the assessment of it
  • Cambridge: either a practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper
  • Pearson International GCSE: practical skills examined inside the written papers
  • Tabulation, plotting, precision and conclusion language are the whole skill set

This is the question every science family asks and it has a precise answer that depends on the board. The practical work itself happens at school, in the school laboratory, with the school's apparatus and under the school's supervision. No tutoring arrangement, in-home or online, changes that or should attempt to. What tutoring prepares is the assessment of practical skills, and that assessment is a written exercise in both boards even where it is called a practical test.

For Cambridge candidates, the school enters either the practical test or the alternative-to-practical written paper, and the family should find out which. Both reward a tightly defined set of skills: drawing apparatus conventionally, tabulating results with consistent precision and correct headings, reading scales to the appropriate number of figures, plotting points accurately and drawing a line of best fit that respects the data, identifying the dependent and control variables correctly, and writing a conclusion in the language the mark scheme rewards. Every one of those is taught better on a shared screen with the student's own attempt visible than it is standing next to them, because the annotation is permanent and can be revisited.

For Pearson International GCSE candidates there is no separate practical component. Practical skills are assessed within the written papers, which means the same tabulation, plotting and evaluation work is required and arrives embedded in theory questions. Students frequently miss these marks because nobody told them this part of the paper existed as a distinct skill. The preparation is identical in substance and differs only in where it lands, which is a good illustration of why the board question has to be settled before any teaching is planned.

06

The five-subject equivalency rule, and the error a ranking page makes

Equivalency is the federal process by which a foreign secondary certificate is recognised for use in the UAE, and it is absent from four of the ten query clusters researched for this project. For the British track the published requirement is specific: a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and must submit proof of one accredited subject at the Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at the Advanced Subsidiary Level with the same grade.

Two details matter and both are commonly got wrong. First, Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count, which surprises families whose children take both as KHDA requires. Second, one competitor ranking for these searches states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects. That is not what the published rule says, and inheriting the error would be worse than saying nothing. For the American track, English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics by at least 450 in the SAT Math test.

For the IB there is no figure published here, deliberately. No IB points threshold for equivalency has been read on the Ministry of Education's own site or on an emirate attestation authority's page, so none appears on this page. Families on an IB route should verify directly rather than trusting a number from any tutoring website. IB Gram does not perform equivalency, does not guarantee any outcome in it, and does not suggest that tutoring is required for it; it is a regulatory process and implying otherwise would be a false-urgency claim about something a family handles through the official channel.

How many IGCSE subjects to fund, and what a parent can check themselves

Here is a figure a City Walk parent can verify without trusting anybody: open the school's option booklet and count the subjects. Eight to ten is normal in this corridor. Now take the published Dubai market band for a qualified online subject tutor, AED 150 to 300 an hour, and multiply by one weekly hour in each subject across a thirty-six week year. The result is a number no household should be paying, and the arithmetic is the point. Any provider recommending support across more than three subjects simultaneously is selling hours rather than solving a problem.

The alternative is triage, and it is cheap. One diagnostic session per candidate subject, using the student's own marked work, establishes three categories: subjects genuinely at risk where teaching is needed, subjects where the student knows the content and needs timed papers and a mark scheme, and subjects that are fine and should be left alone. Most IGCSE students in this corridor turn out to need teaching in two subjects, timed practice in three, and nothing at all in the rest. A family that funds two weekly sessions instead of eight is spending within the AED 600 to 1,200 monthly mid-market band rather than several multiples of it.

The rest of the published market is worth knowing so that the triage decision is made with the numbers in view. Budget online provision, generally university students, is advertised from AED 33 to 52 at Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 at EdFlik. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150. Specialist tutors occupy AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED at AED 650. In-home one-to-one is quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate's 2026 rate table and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors, with monthly in-home packages advertised at AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. Those are other companies' published prices, named and dated; IB Gram quotes its own rate in writing before anything is booked.

Online delivery, and the claims this page will not make

  • Online, one-to-one, Gulf Standard Time; UAE home visits are not offered
  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free of charge, valid two years
  • No regulator or board accreditation claimed; no UAE premises
  • Official board materials are referenced and linked, never reproduced here

Lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own script, the correct board's past paper and the published mark scheme on screen together. Nobody is sent to a City Walk address: IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, and in-home tutoring is a service that exists only in India. The practical argument has already been made with the published numbers, and there is one more worth adding for an IGCSE family specifically. A student taking eight subjects across two boards may need three different specialists in a single term, and assembling three people who will each drive to Al Wasl Road on a different evening is a logistical problem that online delivery simply does not have.

On regulation the position is short and factual. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years through MoHRE's private tutor licensing service. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no schedule of amounts has been published, none is quoted here. Ask any tutor to show the permit. Separately, do not arrange for a child to be tutored privately by a teacher at their own school; the permit carries a code of conduct and ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar it in Abu Dhabi.

What this page declines to claim: IB Gram is not approved, accredited, certified or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB organisation, and nothing here should be read as implying any of it. There is no IB Gram office, centre or branch in the UAE. We do not supply, reproduce or host syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; we reference them and link the official source, because reproducing them is a copyright matter. No tutor can guarantee a grade, and no statistic appears here without its source and date. The examination timetable your child works from should come from the school and the board's official PDF for the correct administrative zone, never from a tutoring site.

Where we tutor

City Walk and the districts whose schools set the board

For an IGCSE family the relevant difference between neighbouring districts is not the tutor supply, it is which schools are in them and therefore which boards and tiers your child will meet. These are the areas and what each one tends to mean.

City Walk

No secondary campus inside the district, so the board depends entirely on which school the family chose. Every IGCSE student here commutes, most often west into Al Safa and Jumeirah. The short internal distances make a 17:00 session feasible once the return journey is accounted for.

Al Wasl

Villas along Al Wasl Road with the shortest run to the Al Safa school cluster. Families here and in City Walk frequently attend the same schools and therefore sit the same syllabus codes, which is why the two districts behave identically for tutoring purposes.

Al Safa

The densest school cluster in this corridor, with British-curriculum campuses and one IB continuum school side by side. Both major boards are represented across these schools, so two neighbours in Al Safa can have children on different syllabus codes in the same subject.

Jumeirah 1

Long-established British-curriculum provision close to the coast. Several of these schools have run the same board for many years, which makes the syllabus codes easy to establish and the tier conventions well understood by parents already in the community.

Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3

Mostly residential with primary provision nearby and secondary a slightly longer run. Families here are typically travelling into the Al Safa or Umm Suqeim clusters, so the board question is settled by the destination rather than by the home address.

Umm Suqeim

Two substantial campuses including an IB continuum school, which is where Cambridge International Mathematics 0607 most often appears rather than 0580. A City Walk student travelling here daily faces the longest afternoon return in this group, pushing weekday sessions to 17:30.

La Mer and Pearl Jumeira

Coastal and residential with no secondary schools of their own. The pattern matches City Walk exactly: commute out, board determined by the school, and evening session slots contested with three neighbouring districts at once.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

North across Al Wasl Road, dense and without secondary provision. Included because City Walk families search it alongside their own district; for IGCSE purposes it adds no schools and therefore no new board or tier combinations.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in City Walk

Al Safa and Al Wasl campuses, the shortest commute from City Walk

Both major examination boards appear across this cluster, and some schools split boards by subject. Establish the syllabus code and the tier from the school's own option documentation before hiring anybody, and confirm the examination zone for the timetable.

  • Jumeirah College, Al Safa
  • Horizon English School, Al Safa
  • Safa British School
  • Jumeira Baccalaureate School, Al Safa
  • Latifa School for Girls

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Barsha campuses

The second ring, where IB continuum schools sit alongside British-curriculum ones. Cambridge International Mathematics 0607 is more likely here than in the British-only campuses, and the distinction between 0607 and 0580 matters a great deal to a tutor.

  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Raffles World Academy, Umm Suqeim
  • Kings' School Dubai, Umm Suqeim
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai

Schools are named here as context for the City Walk catchment. Board and syllabus choices change and should be confirmed with the school; IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or partnership with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the four facts from the school

Board, syllabus code, tier and any optional papers, for each subject you are considering. They are in the school's option documentation or available from the head of year in a single email. Without them a tutor is guessing, and a tutor guessing about which board will prepare the wrong paper very competently.

  2. 02

    Triage before you fund anything

One diagnostic session per candidate subject, using the student's own marked work rather than predicted grades. The output is a ranked list in three categories: teaching needed, timed practice needed, leave alone. Most Year 11 candidates in this corridor need teaching in two subjects and nothing in the rest.

  3. 03

A free 55-minute lesson in the subject that ranked first

No charge, no card details taken. The tutor works from a past paper from the correct board and series and watches the working rather than the answers, then writes a short note classifying the problem and saying what a term of weekly sessions would realistically change.

  4. 04

A written rate and a session plan tied to the specification

The rate per session in writing before anything is booked, with the plan referenced to the specification's own content list so you can see what is being covered and what is not. No bundles bought in advance and no discount conditional on committing to a term.

  5. 05

Re-triage after the mock, and stop subjects that are done

The mock is the honest checkpoint. Each funded subject is reassessed: continue, move to timed practice only, or stop. A plan where one subject drops out in February because it no longer needs paying for is the intended outcome, not a lost customer.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Syllabus codes, not subject names

Exactly one syllabus code appeared across the seven-page area cluster researched for this project. A tutor working on 0580 when the school entered 0607, or on Cambridge practical papers when the board is Pearson, is preparing the wrong examination. We establish the code and the tier before the first session rather than after the first mock.

Advice about how little to buy

This page does the arithmetic on funding eight subjects and tells you not to. Triage from marked work usually produces two subjects that need teaching, three that need timed papers and a mark scheme, and the rest left alone. That recommendation makes a smaller sale, which is why most pages in this market do not make it.

The tier conversation parents are not having

Core against Extended and Foundation against Higher decides the grade range available and casts a shadow over sixth-form options. We set out what to ask the school, what evidence the placement rests on and when the window to revisit it closes, because a tutor cannot fix a ceiling that was set on the option form.

Practical assessment handled board by board

Cambridge candidates sit a practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper; Pearson International GCSE candidates have those skills examined inside the written papers. Tabulation, plotting, precision and conclusion language are taught explicitly either way, on a shared screen where the annotation on the student's own attempt stays visible.

Equivalency stated correctly, with the source

Five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. A ranking competitor publishes six subjects. We publish the sourced rule, say where to verify it, and make clear that no tutoring is required for a regulatory process.

Timetables from the board, never from us

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and cannot accept responsibility for candidates who use the wrong version of the timetable. We will tell you that the zone matters and point you to the school and the official PDF rather than restating dates that can be revised.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in City Walk: your questions answered

Which IGCSE board does my child's school in this corridor actually use?+

Ask the school, because it varies between campuses a few minutes apart and some schools split boards by subject. The answer sits in the Year 9 or Year 10 option documentation and the head of year can confirm it in one email. You want four things: the board, the syllabus code, the tier and any optional papers. A Cambridge 0620 Extended chemistry candidate sitting the alternative-to-practical paper and a Pearson 4CH1 candidate are both doing 'IGCSE chemistry' and need materially different preparation, so this is the first question rather than a detail.

Are Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE treated as equivalent in Dubai?+

Both are internationally recognised qualifications and both appear across Dubai's private schools, so for school progression and for the Ministry of Education's five-subject count the distinction is not usually the issue. Where the difference bites is in preparation. The syllabus codes, paper structures, tiering arrangements and, in the sciences, the practical assessment are different. A tutor needs to know which one; a university or a school admissions office generally does not. Check any specific entry requirement against the institution's own published list rather than assuming interchangeability.

Core or Extended: which route is my child on, and can it still change?+

They are two routes through the same syllabus. Core candidates sit the core pair of written papers and cover a reduced content list; Extended candidates sit the extended pair, meet the stretch topics and are eligible for a wider grade range, including the top grades that Core candidates cannot be awarded. The choice is a school decision made on evidence before the entry deadline, and it can sometimes be revisited within that window. It matters beyond sixteen, because A Level and IB Diploma courses in mathematics and the sciences assume the extended content.

If my child is on Foundation tier mathematics, what grade can they be awarded?+

A restricted range: Foundation tier in Pearson Mathematics A does not give access to the top grades, and the same principle applies to the Cambridge Core route. That is the point of tiering, and it is not a judgement about the child so much as a prediction made from the evidence available when the entry was decided. If the prediction now looks wrong, the conversation to have with the school is about evidence and about the entry deadline, which sits well before the examinations. A tutor cannot lift a ceiling that was set on an entry form.

How are IGCSE science practicals assessed if our tuition is online?+

The practical work itself happens at school with the school's apparatus, and no tutoring arrangement changes that. What is assessed, and what tutoring prepares, is written: Cambridge candidates sit either a practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper, and Pearson International GCSE candidates have practical skills examined inside their written papers. The skills are the same either way: conventional apparatus diagrams, consistent tabulation, reading scales to the right precision, accurate plotting, correct variable identification and conclusions phrased as the mark scheme rewards. All of that teaches well on a shared screen with the student's own attempt annotated.

For equivalency, how many IGCSE passes does a City Walk student need?+

Five. The published requirement for the British track is that a student passes five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and submits proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. One competitor ranking for these searches states six, which does not match the published rule. Verify against the Ministry's own guidance and the emirate attestation authority before acting, because this is a regulatory process rather than an academic one.

Are Arabic and Islamic Education included in the five required subjects?+

No. The published guidance states that Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count. This surprises many families, because both are mandatory in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum and occupy real timetable time. The practical implication is that a student needs five qualifying subjects outside those two, which is worth checking against the option choices in Year 9 rather than discovering at the end of Year 11. Confirm the current position through the official channel, since requirements are set by the Ministry and can be updated.

When do students in Dubai actually sit their IGCSE examinations?+

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE examinations are available in May/June and November each year; the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students in January, and November 2025 results landed on 22 January 2026. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who use the wrong zone's timetable, so take the dates from the school and the official board PDF.

Can my child resit an IGCSE in November without repeating the year?+

Yes, both boards run a November series alongside the June one, which is the normal route for a targeted resit. The decisions that matter are made with the school: whether the school will enter the candidate for that series, which subjects are worth resitting, and what the entry deadline is, because it sits well before the examination window. Pearson's November 2026 timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026 with results in January. A resit works best as a short focused block on the specific papers rather than as a repeat of the whole course.

Is the 9 to 1 scale or the A* to G scale used for IGCSE in Dubai?+

Both appear, which is why comparing grades with a neighbour so often produces confusion. Pearson International GCSE reports on the 9 to 1 numeric scale. Cambridge reports on an A* to G scale for many syllabuses and on a 9 to 1 scale for others, depending on the syllabus and the region of entry. Establish which scale your child's certificate will use before interpreting anything, and bear in mind that a Year 10 school report is usually a working-at grade produced under classroom conditions rather than an examination grade produced under terminal ones.

How many IGCSE subjects is it sensible to fund tutoring in at once?+

Two, in most cases. An IGCSE candidate takes eight to ten subjects, and funding a weekly hour in each at the published Dubai band of AED 150 to 300 produces a figure no household should be paying. Triage from the student's own marked work usually yields two subjects that genuinely need teaching, three that need timed papers and a mark scheme, and the rest that should be left alone. Three funded subjects is defensible for a short block in an exam year. Four or more almost always means the triage has not been done.

Which IGCSE subjects do families in this corridor most often need help with?+

Mathematics first, by a long way, and specifically the algebraic fluency that both tiers assume and that nothing in the curriculum explicitly drills. Then chemistry, where the quantitative chain from moles to concentration to titration arithmetic breaks in a place students cannot locate themselves. Physics follows, usually on electricity and the wave vocabulary. English Language is requested often and benefits least from content teaching and most from structure and answering the question asked. Biology is a recall-volume problem that responds to a timetable rather than to a tutor in many cases.

Can my child take different IGCSE subjects with different examination boards?+

Yes, and in this corridor it is common: a school may enter mathematics with one board and the sciences with another, and a student moving schools mid-course can end up with a genuinely mixed set. It creates no problem for the certificate or for the Ministry of Education's five-subject count, but it creates work for a family hiring help, because each subject needs its own board, code, tier and practical arrangement established. Keep a single list of all four facts per subject; it is the document that makes every subsequent tutoring conversation efficient.

What does an IGCSE home tutor cost in this part of Dubai?+

Published figures, named and dated: Unitors advertises IGCSE from AED 150 an hour, qualified subject tutors working online sit at AED 150 to 300, specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED at AED 650, and budget online provision from university students is advertised at AED 33 to 52 by Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 by EdFlik. In-home one-to-one is quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors. IB Gram does not sell UAE home visits and quotes its own rate in writing before anything is booked.

Should we start IGCSE support in Year 10 or wait until Year 11?+

Year 10, if there is a known weakness, and the reason is tiering rather than content. Tier placement decisions and entry deadlines sit before the examinations, and the evidence a school uses comes largely from Year 10 work. A student who closes an algebra gap in Year 10 may be placed on the higher route; the same student discovered in Year 11 may not be, and that ceiling then follows them into sixth form. Where there is no known weakness, waiting is reasonable: start with one diagnostic session rather than a term of lessons bought on anxiety.

Start with the four facts, then the triage

Send the board, syllabus code, tier and optional papers for each subject you are worried about, along with the school, the year group and two evening windows that survive the return journey from Al Safa, Jumeirah or Umm Suqeim. We will run one diagnostic session per candidate subject from the student's own marked work and give you a ranked list in three categories: teaching needed, timed practice needed, leave alone. The first 55-minute lesson carries no charge and takes no card details. If the honest result is that one subject needs a tutor and the rest need a timer and the right mark scheme, that is what the written note will say.
