Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 Tutor in Dubai

Hiring a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 tutor in Dubai is a budget decision before it is an academic one, and the published rates tell you almost nothing because nobody separates the components. History prices differently from maths: the marking takes longer than the lesson. This page breaks the cost down by paper, in AED, says which depth study widens or narrows the pool of available teachers, and names the weeks of the Dubai school year when hours are cheap in real terms. Teaching is one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Why a history quote is harder to read than a maths quote

A Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 tutor in Dubai will quote you an hourly rate, and that number is less informative than it looks. The published market bands are known: budget online tutoring from AED 45 to AED 150, a qualified subject teacher online at AED 150 to AED 300, an in-home visit from AED 180 to AED 500 with travel inside the price, an exam-year specialist at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, and premium named tutors above AED 500. Unitors publishes IGCSE rates from AED 150, TutorChase lists AED 270, Bestimate's Dubai table gives the in-home band, and BartyED quotes AED 650. Those are their figures, read in October 2026. None is ours.

The reason the hourly rate misleads in history specifically is that the work does not fit inside the hour. A maths tutor can set twenty questions, mark them in six minutes and hand them back. A history tutor who sets a 10-mark part (c) essay and a full source-paper response is taking forty minutes to mark a single student's work properly, with annotation against the mark criteria rather than a number at the bottom. Any tutor charging a maths rate for history is either not marking the written work or not pricing their own time, and both of those become visible in about a month.

The second reason is that history is not one subject at this level. Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 has three assessed parts: Paper 1, two hours and 60 marks, worth 40% of the grade; Paper 2, the source paper, two hours and 50 marks, worth 33%; and then either Paper 3 coursework or Paper 4 Alternative to Coursework, 40 marks and 27%. The tutoring these need is not interchangeable. Source technique is a short, teachable block. Core content is a long haul. Coursework supervision is expensive per hour because the reading happens outside the session. Quoting one rate for all three hides which one you are buying.

The third variable is the depth study, and it is the one most families do not know to ask about. Every 0470 candidate studies one depth study in detail, and the school chose which: Germany 1918 to 1945, Russia 1905 to 1941, the USA 1919 to 1941, China, South Africa, or the Israelis and Palestinians since 1945. Germany is taught in Dubai more than all the others combined, so the pool of teachers who know it well is deep and the rate is competitive. A cohort entered for China or South Africa has a much thinner pool, and that scarcity shows up in both price and availability at 4.30pm.

The last variable is when you buy. History demand in Dubai is concentrated into two short windows, and the hourly rate barely moves between them while availability collapses. The sections below price each component separately, set out which depth studies are widely taught here, and give the weeks of the Dubai school year in which hours are genuinely cheaper in real terms. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video; IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four routes through 0470 that Dubai families actually buy, with what each costs in hours. The route matters more than the hourly rate, because it determines how many hours there are.

0470-TWO-YEARAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

0470 across a full two-year Cambridge cohort

The cheapest route per mark. One weekly session from the start of Year 10 spreads the core content across sixty-odd weeks, which means the part (c) essay is practised a dozen times rather than three times. At the mid market band of AED 150 to AED 300 an hour this is also the largest absolute spend, which is why most families do not do it.

Dubai schools generally teach the core content in Year 10 and the depth study plus the source topic in Year 11, so a Year 10 start buys content teaching and a Year 11 start buys technique. Families who plan to use a tutor at all are better off booking a fortnightly slot from Year 10 than a weekly one from February of Year 11, for the same total outlay.

0470-EXAM-YEARAges 15-16 · Year 11

0470 exam-year support only

The most common purchase in this market: twenty to thirty-five sessions across Year 11, usually starting after the mocks. The constraint is that the core content is already taught, well or badly, and the hours have to be split between repairing it and building essay technique. Expect to pay the exam-year band rather than the standard one.

Mock results in Dubai schools typically land in the winter term, and the Cambridge entry deadline sits months before the exam window it belongs to. UAE centres enter candidates for the June series or the November series; entries close in the spring for June papers, roughly four months ahead of the first component, and the exact date for your centre is printed on the statement of entry rather than fixed nationally. The practical consequence for 0470 is that the decision to carry a weak Paper 1 into November instead of June has to be taken while the June entry is still open, which is months before any mock grade for the summer looks final.

0470-RESITAges 16-17 · after a June result

0470 resit and November series candidates

Cambridge runs IGCSE in both a June and a November series, so a missed grade does not cost a year. A resit block is short, dense and cheap relative to a full programme, because the content exists and the work is almost entirely technique: part (c) structure, source provenance, and timing. Eight to fifteen sessions is typical.

Re-entry is made through a school or an exam centre in the UAE, and the centre's own deadline binds rather than the published series window. Several Dubai centres accept private candidates, and each sets its own entry fee, so the cost of the retake itself needs checking with the centre before the tutoring budget is set.

POST-0470Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

After 0470: AS and A Level History 9489 or IB Diploma History

Both post-16 routes assume the essay discipline from 0470 is in place and then raise the stakes: longer arguments, independent reading, and source work judged against historiography rather than against provenance alone. Students who reached a good 0470 grade by memorising narrative find the first post-16 term harder than their IGCSE result predicted.

A number of Dubai schools offer Cambridge AS and A Level History 9489 and IB Diploma History side by side, and the real difference for most students is the writing volume rather than the content. Asking in Year 11 which of the two the department staffs more deeply is more useful than asking which carries more prestige.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Pricing 0470 properly means knowing which unit is being bought. These are the content blocks and assessed skills a Dubai family books hours against, with what each one demands of a teacher's time.

Core content Option B: International Relations since 1919

0470 Paper 1 · the route most Dubai schools take

The peace treaties of 1919 to 1923, the League of Nations, the collapse of peace by 1939, the origins of the Cold War, American containment, Soviet control of Eastern Europe and events in the Gulf. Broad, chronological and heavy on causation, so it needs sustained weekly teaching rather than a short block.

Core content Option A: the 19th century, 1814-1914

0470 Paper 1 · the minority route

International relations and developments from the Congress of Vienna to the eve of the First World War. Taught by far fewer Dubai schools, which means fewer teachers have delivered it recently and the available pool for a cohort on this option is noticeably thinner.

Depth Study: Germany, 1918-1945

0470 Paper 1 part (c) and Paper 4

Weimar's crises, the rise of the Nazi party, the consolidation of power, life in the Third Reich and the war years. The most widely taught depth study in Dubai by a wide margin, so this is the cohort with the deepest choice of teacher and the most competitive rate.

Depth Study: Russia, 1905-1941

0470 Paper 1 part (c) and Paper 4

The 1905 and 1917 revolutions, the civil war, the New Economic Policy, Stalin's rise, collectivisation and the purges. Dense chronology with a high proportion of unfamiliar names, which is where the hours go: securing the sequence before attempting judgement.

Depth Study: the USA, 1919-1941

0470 Paper 1 part (c) and Paper 4

The boom of the 1920s, the Crash, the Depression and the New Deal. Comparatively compact and well resourced, with the common difficulty being economic mechanism rather than narrative: students describe the Crash accurately and cannot explain why it propagated.

Depth Study: China, c.1930-c.1990

0470 Paper 1 part (c) and Paper 4

The Communist victory, the early People's Republic, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution and the reform era. Unfamiliar to most students and taught by few Dubai schools, so a cohort on this option should check depth-study coverage before booking anything.

Depth Study: South Africa, c.1940-c.1994

0470 Paper 1 part (c) and Paper 4

Apartheid legislation, resistance movements, international pressure and the transition to democracy. A thin pool of teachers in this market relative to Germany or Russia, and a depth study where precise terminology carries a disproportionate number of marks.

Depth Study: Israelis and Palestinians since 1945

0470 Paper 1 part (c) and Paper 4

A syllabus option assessed, like every other, on evidence, causation and argument against the published mark criteria. A tutor's responsibility here is the assessment requirement and the accurate use of contested terminology, not the advancement of a position.

The Paper 2 prescribed source topic

0470 Paper 2 · 50 marks, 33%

One prescribed topic set by Cambridge for the series, examined entirely through sources. The topic changes between series, so the content is less important than the technique, and this is the component that responds fastest to a short, well-aimed block of teaching.

The coursework assignment

0470 Paper 3 · up to 2,000 words, 40 marks

One assignment on the depth study, written to a 2,000-word limit and marked out of 40. The most expensive component to support per hour, because the draft reading happens between sessions. The work must be the candidate's own throughout.

Paper 4 Alternative to Coursework

0470 Paper 4 · 1 hour, 40 marks

A one-hour written paper on the depth study, worth the same 27% as the coursework route. Cheap to prepare for relative to coursework, because it is a timed technique problem rather than a project, and three to five sessions usually covers it.

Chronology, terminology and recall

0470 across all papers

The underlying requirement nobody times correctly. Two hours of writing under exam conditions demands that dates, names and sequence are automatic, not retrievable with effort. Building that is slow, repetitive work that cannot be bought in the final fortnight at any rate.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three purchase shapes, priced differently because they consume different amounts of a teacher's time. All three run one-to-one over live video, and none involves a visit to a UAE address.

Source-paper block: the cheapest 33% available

Six to ten sessions aimed only at Paper 2. The prescribed topic changes between series, so the work is technique: reading provenance, cross-referencing two sources, judging utility, handling a cartoon, and building the final 12-mark judgement from grouped evidence. The lowest-cost route to a measurable grade change in this syllabus.

  • Provenance read before content, every time
  • Cross-reference answers built on agreement and disagreement together
  • Utility judged by what a source is useful for, not whether it is true
  • The 12-mark judgement practised as grouped evidence plus a verdict

Essay-volume programme

A weekly session plus a marked part (c) essay every fortnight, which is where the real cost of history tutoring sits. Marking a 10-mark essay against the criteria with usable annotation takes a tutor longer than a maths set of twenty questions, and it is the single thing a borderline candidate needs most.

  • One 10-mark part (c) essay marked against the published criteria each fortnight
  • Part (a) and part (b) technique drilled inside the lesson, not set as homework
  • A running list of the causal links the student keeps omitting
  • Timed full Paper 1 attempts at mock and at the final fortnight

Coursework or Paper 4 block

For the final 27%. On the coursework route, three to five sessions spaced around the school's internal deadlines, with draft reading done between them. On the Paper 4 route, three to five sessions of timed technique on the depth study. The coursework version costs more per hour because the reading is unbilled inside the lesson.

  • Coursework question tested for whether 2,000 words can actually answer it
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only; no assessed material is produced for them
  • Paper 4 practised against the clock, since one hour is the real constraint
  • The school's internal deadline treated as the binding date

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 tuition costs in Dubai, component by component

The honest answer to what a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 tutor in Dubai costs is that the hourly rate sits in a published band of roughly AED 45 to AED 650, and that the figure you should actually care about is the total for the component you need. A source-paper block and a full exam-year programme are both bought at the same hourly rate and differ by a factor of four in total cost.

Work it the other way round. Take the market midpoint for a qualified subject teacher online, which the published bands put around AED 200 an hour, and multiply it by the hours a component realistically needs. The source paper needs six to ten sessions and carries 33% of the grade. Paper 1 core content needs ten to sixteen if the school has taught it reasonably and more if it has not, and carries 40%. The coursework or alternative paper needs three to six and carries 27%. A full exam-year programme covering all three lands between twenty-five and thirty-five sessions.

That arithmetic does something a quoted rate cannot: it tells you which component is worth buying first on a limited budget. Paper 2 is the best ratio in the syllabus, because a third of the grade turns on technique that can be taught in weeks rather than content that takes months. Core content is the opposite. If you have the budget for one block only, the source paper is usually the defensible choice, and any tutor who tells you otherwise without having seen a marked script is guessing.

The table below shows the arithmetic in full. The hourly figure is the published market midpoint rather than an IB Gram price, the hour counts come from how long each component takes to teach, and the totals are simple multiplication you can redo with whatever rate you are actually quoted.

Why history is priced differently from maths and science

Parents comparing quotes across subjects notice that history and English tutors in Dubai sit at or above the rate for maths and the sciences at the same level, and the usual explanation offered is that essay subjects are harder to teach. That is not the reason. The reason is marking time.

A maths tutor can set twenty exercises, mark them in a few minutes by looking at the answers, and spend the lesson on the three that went wrong. A history tutor who sets a 10-mark part (c) essay and a full source-paper response has to read every word, decide which level the answer sits in against the published criteria, annotate the specific sentences where the argument stopped developing, and write something the student can act on. Done properly for one student that is thirty to forty-five minutes of unbilled work per fortnight, and a tutor who does not price it either stops doing it or stops working.

The practical test for a parent is therefore not the rate. It is a question: how often will written work be marked against the criteria, and will I see the annotated script. A tutor charging AED 150 an hour who marks an essay every fortnight is better value than one charging AED 300 who discusses essays and never marks one, and the difference is invisible until you ask. The marked script is the product in an essay subject. The conversation is the delivery mechanism.

There is a second cost driver peculiar to history, which is breadth. A 0470 candidate must hold two core-content periods, one depth study and one source topic simultaneously. A tutor who has taught the core content but not your child's depth study will be learning it at your expense in week three. That is a fair question to ask before booking, and the answer changes the quote more honestly than any negotiation over the hourly rate.

03

Which depth study your school chose, and what it does to the quote

Every 0470 candidate studies one depth study in detail, examined through the part (c) question on Paper 1 and through the coursework or Paper 4. The school chose it, probably before your child joined, and most parents have never been told which. It is the first thing to establish, because it changes both who can teach your child and what that costs.

Germany 1918 to 1945 is taught in Dubai more than every other option combined. That has a direct price effect: almost every experienced IGCSE history teacher has delivered it, resources are abundant, and the pool of available tutors at a Gulf Standard Time evening slot is deep. A cohort entered for China or South Africa faces the opposite position. Fewer schools in this market run those options, fewer teachers have taken a cohort through them, and scarcity in a thin pool shows up first as unavailability at the hour you want and second as a higher rate for the people who are genuinely expert.

This is also the situation where a mid-year school move becomes expensive. A student who studied Russia at their previous school and joins a Dubai cohort entered for Germany has a content gap that no technique teaching closes, and the honest quote is for content hours rather than essay practice. Families in this position are the ones most often sold a short technique block that cannot work. Ask the new school which depth study the cohort is entered for on the first day, not in February.

The table sets out the six options with the content load and the realistic availability position in this market. Availability is a statement about Dubai's teaching pool rather than a judgement about the options themselves.

04

Paper 1: two hours, 60 marks, and the part (c) that decides the grade

Paper 1 runs for two hours, carries 60 marks and is worth 40% of the Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 grade. Candidates answer three questions, two drawn from the core content and one on their depth study. Each question comes in three parts, and the mark allocation is the same every time: four marks, six marks and ten marks.

That structure is the most useful thing a 0470 candidate can internalise, because the three parts want three different pieces of writing. Part (a) is worth four marks and asks for description or recall: short, factual, no argument required, and complete in a few minutes. Part (b) is worth six and asks why something happened: explanation developed over two or three steps rather than a list of causes. Part (c) is worth ten and asks for judgement, usually phrased as how far or to what extent, and it requires both sides argued and a conclusion that actually answers the question rather than summarising the paragraphs above it.

Ten marks, three times over, is thirty of the paper's sixty marks. Half of Paper 1 is judgement writing, and judgement writing is the thing Dubai candidates are least often drilled on, because a class of twenty-eight cannot be given individual essay feedback every fortnight. This is precisely why the marked essay rather than the lesson is the product you are buying in history, and why the cost of that marking is what you are really paying for.

The timing problem compounds it. Two hours across three questions is forty minutes each, and a candidate who writes generously on part (a) of question one has already damaged part (c) of question three. A timed full-paper attempt reveals that in a single afternoon, and it is worth doing early enough that the habit can be changed rather than merely diagnosed.

05

Paper 2: one prescribed topic and a 12-mark judgement

Paper 2 is two hours, 50 marks and 33% of the grade, and it is examined entirely through sources on a single prescribed topic that Cambridge sets for the series. The topic rotates, so content revision has a limited role here and technique has almost all of it. That makes Paper 2 the best-value component in 0470 to buy tutoring for, and the one most often left until last.

The questions move through a predictable sequence of skills. Early questions test comprehension and inference from one or two sources. There is a comparison question requiring both agreement and disagreement between two sources, where candidates lose marks by writing about only one of them or by comparing topic rather than message. There is a utility or reliability question, where the single biggest failure in the whole paper occurs: the student writes that a source is biased and stops. Bias is not an answer. Every source has a provenance, a purpose and an audience, and utility depends on what you are trying to find out.

A cartoon or visual source usually appears, and it needs the symbolism decoded and tied to the context of the date rather than described. The paper closes with a 12-mark question asking how far the sources support a given statement, which is answered by grouping sources that support it, grouping those that do not, and reaching a verdict with reference to provenance. A candidate who works through the sources one by one in order almost never reaches the top band.

All of this is teachable in six to ten sessions because it is a set of readable habits rather than a body of knowledge. It is also the part of the course where the marked script matters most, since the difference between a mid-band and a top-band source answer is often two sentences that the student does not know are missing.

06

The last 27%: coursework or Paper 4, and what each costs

The final 27% of 0470 arrives either as Paper 3 coursework, one assignment on the depth study written to a limit of 2,000 words and marked out of 40, or as Paper 4 Alternative to Coursework, a one-hour written paper also worth 40 marks. Your child's school has already chosen, and the two cost very different amounts to support.

Paper 4 is the cheaper of the two. It is a timed technique problem on material the student has already studied, and three to five sessions usually covers the question types, the time allocation and the depth of argument a one-hour paper can carry. Candidates mostly lose marks here by writing a Paper 1 style answer at Paper 1 length and running out of time.

Coursework is the more expensive, and the expense is not in the lesson. Supporting a 2,000-word assignment means reading each draft properly: whether the question can be answered in the word limit, whether the argument is supported by evidence rather than asserted, whether the counter-argument is present, and whether the conclusion follows. That reading sits outside the billed hour, and a tutor pricing coursework support at their standard rate is absorbing it. Ask how the draft-reading time is handled before the block begins.

One boundary applies regardless of route. The assignment must be the candidate's own work from beginning to end. A tutor may question the argument, mark where evidence is missing, explain what the published criteria reward and say plainly that a paragraph is not doing any work. A tutor may not produce assessed material on a student's behalf, and a service offering to do so is selling a malpractice risk alongside it. There are such services in this market, and Cambridge's rules treat the student rather than the seller as the person who loses the entry.

07

When to buy: the Dubai history-tutoring year

Hourly rates in this market are stable across the year. Availability is not, and availability is what you are actually buying, so the effective price of a history tutor in Dubai changes considerably depending on the week you make the call.

Two windows absorb most of the demand. The first is the fortnight after mock results land in the winter term, when every Year 11 family in the city makes the same decision simultaneously. The second is the short period after the school confirms the entry and the series stops being abstract. In both windows the published rate holds and the specialists with free 4.30pm and 6pm slots are the ones nobody booked, which means families pay the exam-year band of AED 200 to AED 450 for whoever remains rather than the standard band for the teacher they wanted.

The quiet windows are September and October, the weeks immediately after a mid-year break, and the period right after the June series when the November cohort has not yet organised itself. Booking in a quiet window costs the same per hour and buys a choice of teacher, a choice of slot, and roughly four times as many sessions before the exam. For a subject where the product is marked essays delivered at a fortnightly rhythm, the number of fortnights left is the whole argument.

There is also a Ramadan consideration that sits outside the demand cycle. School days shorten, concentration shifts to the evening, and a 4.30pm history session stops being useful. Because lessons run over live video with no travel to schedule, moving to a post-Iftar slot for the month is an administrative change rather than a renegotiation, and families who plan for it keep the fortnightly essay rhythm intact through a period when the cohort can least afford to pause.

Equivalency, permits and two checks worth ten minutes

Two pieces of administration sit around a 0470 entry, and both are frequently misdescribed by tutoring websites in this market. Neither is complicated if you read the primary source.

The first is Ministry of Education equivalency, which matters for UAE university admission. On the British track the Ministry requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. History 0470 is an accredited IGCSE subject and can form part of that count. One competing site in this market publishes a six-subject requirement, which is wrong, and the correct figure is five. Equivalency is assessed by the Ministry, not by any tutoring service, and the rules are the Ministry's to change, so confirm the current position on moe.gov.ae before you plan around it.

The second is the tutor's permit. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. The service is listed by MoHRE as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing and runs through the ministry's app, website and e-services with a two-working-day completion time. Working without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so any page quoting you an amount has invented it.

Two checks, then. Ask the tutor directly whether they hold the permit, because it is free and quick and the answer tells you how they run their work. And do not hire your child's own class teacher privately: ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar Abu Dhabi school staff from paid tutoring of students at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a comparable restriction. For completeness, IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge International or Pearson, and operates no UAE office. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific instrument issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai, and we are not one.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities, and what 0470 families in each tend to pay for

Cost conversations differ across the city, mostly because the schools do. These are the Dubai communities our 0470 families write in from, with what they generally end up buying.

Al Barsha, Tecom and Al Sufouh

Large established Cambridge cohorts, usually on Germany as the depth study. Families here most often buy a short Paper 2 source block, because the departments already teach core content thoroughly and the source paper is where the internal marks dip.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

Long-standing British-curriculum schools with strong humanities staffing. The common purchase is exam-year essay technique rather than content, and the budget conversation is usually about the number of marked essays rather than the hourly rate.

Dubai Hills Estate and Dubai Hills

Newer schools with small history sets. A small set means a thin internal bank of exemplar part (c) answers, so families here buy marked-essay volume: the thing the department cannot supply at the frequency a borderline candidate needs.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Mizhar

Mixed-curriculum cluster carrying the mandatory UAE subjects alongside Cambridge IGCSE. Timetable pressure means core content gets compressed, so this is where full exam-year programmes rather than short blocks are most often needed.

Dubai Marina, JBR and Bluewaters

Apartment communities with high family turnover. Mid-year arrivals frequently find their new school's depth study is not the one they studied, which is the single most expensive situation in 0470 and the one worth pricing honestly up front.

Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Town Square

Villa communities where evening sport competes with homework. The practical budget question here is session length: a single ninety-minute slot often costs less per minute and fits the week better than two sixty-minute ones.

Jumeirah Village Circle, Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Price-sensitive, high-mobility communities where families most often ask about sharing a session between siblings or neighbours. It works when both students are in the same year on the same depth study, and wastes money when they are not.

Deira, Al Qusais and Bur Dubai

Large cohorts with wide ability spreads inside one class. The best-value purchase here is usually a short, sharply aimed source-paper block, because 33% of the grade turns on technique that class teaching rarely has time to drill.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Cambridge humanities departments across Al Barsha, Tecom and the Marina

Long-running IGCSE history cohorts, usually entered for the Germany depth study and holding substantial past-paper stock. Families from these schools generally need targeted technique rather than content teaching, which is the cheaper of the two purchases.

  • Dubai College
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Dubai International Academy

Schools serving Dubai Hills, Arabian Ranches and Mudon

Newer villa-community schools with small option sets. History is often timetabled against another popular option, so sets are small and a fortnight's absence removes a whole topic, which is how a full exam-year programme becomes necessary.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches
  • GEMS Metropole School
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Fairgreen International School

Schools serving Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

Mixed-curriculum cohorts where Cambridge IGCSE runs alongside mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies. The squeeze falls on extended writing, so these are the students most often buying marked essays by volume.

  • Uptown International School
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • Deira International School

Schools are listed as market context only; IB Gram has no affiliation with, partnership with or endorsement from any school, school group or examination board named here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Establish the three facts that set the price

Which depth study the cohort is entered for, whether the school sits Paper 3 coursework or Paper 4, and whether the core content is Option A or Option B. Those three answers determine who can teach your child and how many hours it takes. All three come from the head of history in one email.

  2. 02

Send the mock script before the trial lesson

A marked Paper 1 shows immediately whether marks are going on part (a) recall, part (b) explanation or part (c) judgement, and whether the paper was finished. Without it the free trial lesson is spent finding out what a script would have shown, which is an hour wasted at any rate.

  3. 03

Pick the component, not the package

On a limited budget the source paper is usually the best ratio in the syllabus: 33% of the grade resting on technique teachable in six to ten sessions. Core content is a longer and more expensive commitment. We will say which we think your script argues for, and why, before you book anything.

  4. 04

    Fix the fortnightly marked essay

In an essay subject the marked script is the product. One 10-mark part (c) essay, marked against the published criteria with the annotation you can read, every second week. Agree that rhythm at the start and treat any month without a marked essay as a month that did not happen.

  5. 05

Re-price at the mock and before the entry

Mock results change which component deserves the remaining hours, and the confirmed entry fixes the number of fortnights left. At both points we re-rank by marks available and tell you if the sensible answer is fewer hours rather than more. Blocks can be paused; nothing is locked for a year.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Every AED figure here has a source and a date

The bands quoted on this page belong to the providers that published them, read in October 2026, and the totals are arithmetic you can repeat with your own quoted rate. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars.

Priced by component, because that is how the grade works

A source-paper block and a full exam-year programme share an hourly rate and differ fourfold in total cost. Quoting one blended figure hides which 33% or 40% of the grade you are buying, and which one your child's script actually argues for.

Depth-study coverage confirmed before you book

Germany is taught in Dubai more than all the other options combined. A cohort on China, South Africa or the Israelis and Palestinians faces a thinner pool, and we will say so rather than placing a teacher who learns the option at your expense in week three.

Marking time is priced, not quietly dropped

A 10-mark essay marked against the criteria with usable annotation costs a tutor thirty to forty-five minutes outside the lesson. That work is the product in history. A rate that does not account for it becomes a conversation about essays instead of a marked essay.

The candidate's work stays the candidate's work

A tutor questions an argument, marks where evidence is absent and explains what the criteria reward. Assessed material is never produced on a student's behalf. Cambridge's rules penalise the candidate rather than the seller, which makes the risk entirely theirs.

No regulator endorses us, and no UAE office exists

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson approval. We explain what each body does and link to its own pages. A tutoring site claiming board approval is the most common trust failure in this SERP, and it is checkable in a minute.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 tutor cost per hour in Dubai?+

The published market runs from about AED 45 an hour for budget online tutoring to AED 650 for premium named tutors. The band most families work in is AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject teacher online, and AED 200 to AED 450 and above for exam-year specialists. Unitors lists IGCSE from AED 150, TutorChase AED 270, and Bestimate's Dubai table puts in-home visits at AED 180 to AED 350. Those are their figures as read in October 2026. The more useful number is the total for the component you need, which this page works out separately.

Why do history tutors charge more than maths tutors for the same hour?+

Because the marking does not fit inside the hour. Twenty maths exercises can be checked in a few minutes. A 10-mark part (c) essay and a full source-paper response have to be read in full, placed against the published levels, annotated at the sentence where the argument stopped developing, and returned with something actionable. That is thirty to forty-five minutes of unbilled work per fortnight for one student. A rate that ignores it produces a tutor who discusses essays rather than one who marks them, and you will not notice for a month.

Which depth study has my child's Dubai school entered for 0470?+

Ask the head of history; it is one email and it changes everything about the quote. The options are Germany 1918-45, Russia 1905-41, the USA 1919-41, China from around 1930 to 1990, South Africa from around 1940 to 1994, and the Israelis and Palestinians since 1945. Germany is taught in Dubai more than all the others combined, which means a deeper pool of teachers and a more competitive rate. A cohort on China or South Africa should confirm a tutor has actually taught that option to a cohort before booking a block.

What is the prescribed topic on Paper 2, and does it change each year?+

Paper 2 is examined entirely through sources on one prescribed topic that Cambridge sets for the series, and it rotates between series rather than staying fixed. The practical effect is that content revision has a limited role on this paper and technique has almost all of it, which is why a source block is the best-value tutoring purchase in the syllabus. Your child's school will know which topic the cohort is prepared for, and the official syllabus document on cambridgeinternational.org states the topic for each series.

How much of the 0470 grade rests on the 10-mark question?+

More than most families realise. Paper 1 carries 60 marks and 40% of the grade, and each of its three questions ends with a part (c) worth ten marks. That is thirty of sixty marks on Paper 1, so half of the paper and a fifth of the whole qualification turns on judgement writing: both sides argued, evidence deployed, and a conclusion that answers the question rather than restating it. It is also the skill a class of twenty-eight cannot be given fortnightly individual feedback on, which is why it is the usual reason a tutor is hired.

Is Paper 4 cheaper to prepare for than the 0470 coursework option?+

Yes, noticeably. Paper 4 Alternative to Coursework is a one-hour written paper worth 40 marks on the depth study, and three to five sessions usually covers the question types, the timing and the depth of argument an hour can carry. Coursework is a 2,000-word assignment marked out of 40, and supporting it means reading each draft properly between sessions, which is unbilled work. Both routes carry the same 27% of the grade. Confirm which one the school entered before buying anything, because the two kinds of support look nothing alike.

How many hours of 0470 tutoring does a Year 11 student usually need?+

A candidate with the core content reasonably secure who needs source technique and essay practice typically buys twelve to twenty sessions. A candidate who has fallen behind on content as well is realistically at twenty-five to thirty-five across the exam year. At the market midpoint of around AED 200 an hour that is roughly AED 2,400 to AED 7,000 in total. The number of weeks remaining matters more than the number of hours: thirty sessions from September deliver more than thirty compressed into the spring term, at identical cost.

Do 0470 rates go up during the Dubai mock season?+

The published hourly bands barely move. Availability collapses, which has the same effect on what you pay. In the fortnight after mock results every Year 11 family in the city makes the same decision at once, and the specialists left with a free 4.30pm slot are the ones nobody booked. Families then pay the exam-year band of AED 200 to AED 450 for whoever remains rather than the standard band for the teacher they wanted. Booking in September or October costs the same per hour and buys roughly four times the sessions.

Can one tutor cover both History 0470 and Geography 0460?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking because it simplifies scheduling and occasionally the price. Many humanities teachers have taught both, but the two syllabuses need different things: 0460 rests on case studies and a 1:25,000 map skills paper, while 0470 rests on source technique and judgement essays. The honest test is whether the teacher can mark a 7-mark geography levels answer and a 10-mark history part (c) against the right criteria. If they are strong in one and passable in the other, two specialists usually serve the student better.

Does History 0470 count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

It can. On the British track the Ministry requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. Arabic and Islamic education are not included in the five. History 0470 is an accredited IGCSE subject and may count. One ranking site in this market states a six-subject requirement, which is incorrect. Equivalency is assessed by the Ministry rather than by any tutoring service, so verify the current rule on moe.gov.ae.

Does a history tutor working with Dubai students need a MoHRE permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE operates under the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The application route is MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, completed in two working days. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts has been published, so treat any quoted figure sceptically.

Can my child's own school history teacher tutor them privately?+

It is the wrong arrangement even where it is technically possible. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct with a comparable restriction. Beyond the rules there is a practical problem: the person marking your child's school work should not also be paid to prepare it. A separate properly permitted teacher who has no stake in the internal marks gives you a genuine second opinion on where the grade actually sits.

What happens if no 0470 specialist is free in our evening slot?+

We say so rather than placing a general humanities tutor and letting you discover the gap in week three. History is an option subject and the depth studies narrow the pool further: a family needing China or South Africa in a 5pm Gulf Standard Time slot is drawing on a genuinely small group. The usual options are a different hour, a short wait for a named teacher, or a fortnightly ninety-minute session instead of a weekly hour. Which of those is best depends on how many fortnights remain before the series.

Can we pay for a short block before the June series rather than a full year?+

Yes, and for many candidates it is the right purchase. The question is which block. On a limited budget the source paper usually wins: 33% of the grade resting on technique that six to ten sessions can genuinely move. A part (c) essay block is the next best, because thirty of Paper 1's sixty marks are judgement writing. What a short block cannot do is rebuild core content that was never learned, and a tutor who promises that in six weeks before the exam is selling you something they cannot deliver.

Is there a free trial 0470 lesson, and what does it involve?+

One lesson, free, with no card details taken and no obligation afterwards. The condition is that it is a single lesson with a named teacher. We ask first for the marked mock script and the three facts that set the plan: the depth study, the core-content option, and whether the cohort sits Paper 3 or Paper 4. The hour is then spent teaching one real weakness rather than running an assessment, and you get a short written note of what the teacher found and what they would buy first.
