IB DP Biology SL Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Biology SL tutor in Dubai sits in a market band of roughly AED 150 to AED 450 an hour, and this page shows what moves that number: session length, how close the May session is, whether the hour includes a drive across the emirate, and whether you are buying syllabus teaching or criterion-level work on the scientific investigation. IB Gram matches Dubai families with Biology specialists for one-to-one lessons over live video, run on Gulf Standard Time, starting with a trial lesson so you judge the teaching before you commit to a block.

What a Biology SL tutor in Dubai costs, and what the money actually buys

Start with the number, because every parent in Dubai starts with the number and most tutoring sites refuse to print one. Rates read from live UAE tutoring pages in October 2026 put budget online help at AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, a qualified subject teacher at AED 150 to AED 300, an IB or IGCSE specialist at AED 200 to AED 450, an in-home visit at AED 180 to AED 500 with the drive inside the fee, and named or examiner-tier tutors above AED 500. Those are market rates from other providers, with the band and the source named, not an IB Gram price list. What IB Gram does is match a Biology SL specialist to your child and let a trial lesson settle whether the teaching is worth a block.

The spread between AED 150 and AED 450 for the same hour is not a mystery and it is not mostly brand. It is five or six concrete variables, and a Dubai family can move four of them deliberately. Session length changes the per-hour figure. The distance between your community and the tutor changes it, because an in-home hour in Arabian Ranches carries a drive from Al Barsha or Business Bay that somebody pays for. Proximity to the May session changes it, since specialist diaries in this city fill from January and a late booking buys whatever is left at the top of the band. Whether your child needs syllabus teaching or criterion-level work on the scientific investigation changes it most of all, because those are different skills and a generalist cannot fake the second one.

Dubai is also the place where this calculation matters most, because the private-school market here is the densest in the country. KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, oversees the quality of private education in the emirate, and in 2024-25 the sector ran 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 curricula. The Diploma Programme accounts for about 7 per cent of that enrolment, with UK-curriculum schools at 37 per cent, Indian at 26 per cent and American at 14 per cent. Seven more private schools open for 2026-27, three of them International Baccalaureate, adding 16,846 places. So the pool of Biology SL students is growing faster than the pool of teachers who have actually examined the course.

One more piece of local context belongs in a cost conversation. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private-school fees in Dubai will not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package the Dubai Media Office valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. That freeze is the only fixed line in a Dubai education budget this year, which is why families are reading tutoring quotes more carefully than they did in 2024. A page that answers the cost question honestly, with the band, the source and the date, is more useful than one that asks you to request a callback to find out.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three programmes feed a Biology SL result in Dubai: the Diploma Programme itself, the Middle Years Programme that is supposed to prepare students for it, and the IGCSE year that many Dubai students arrive from instead. The gap between what each one trains and what Biology SL rewards is where most of the lost marks live.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Biology at standard level runs across the two Diploma years and is assessed by two written papers and one scientific investigation. Paper 1 pairs multiple-choice questions with a data-based section and carries 36% of the grade. Paper 2 is short-answer and extended-response work at 44%. The investigation is the remaining 20%, marked out of 24 against four criteria. Standard level is not a lighter version of the same exam: it is a shorter syllabus assessed with the same command terms and the same marking severity.

In Dubai, Biology SL is usually chosen by students whose university target is not medicine, which means the subject is competing for revision time against a higher-level science and a higher-level maths. That is the pattern a tutor has to plan around here. Sessions that try to re-teach the whole syllabus waste a Dubai student's scarcest resource. The useful plan picks the two or three topics that carry the most Paper 2 marks for that student, and treats the investigation as a separate project with its own timeline.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is assessed against four criteria: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Students arrive in DP1 fluent in inquiry language and often weak on recall under time pressure, because the MYP rarely asks for twenty marks of precise biological detail in forty minutes. The transition subject is not content, it is examination discipline.

Dubai runs a large number of full IB continuum schools, so a significant share of Biology SL students here have never sat a terminal written paper before DP1 mocks. Families in Mirdif and Al Barsha whose children came up through an MYP school see the same symptom: strong investigation design, thin Paper 1 recall. A tutor working with that profile should spend early sessions on timed recall and command-term precision, and leave inquiry skills alone, because those are already the student's strength.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and British Year 11

Most British-curriculum students in Dubai reach the Diploma from Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 or a Pearson International GCSE equivalent. Those courses reward accurate recall of defined content and a tight practical-skills set. Biology SL then asks for the same recall plus explanation across topics, plus an independent investigation designed from nothing. Students who scored a 9 or an A* at IGCSE are frequently the ones most surprised by their first DP1 Paper 2 mark.

UK-curriculum schools hold the largest share of Dubai's private-school enrolment, which makes the IGCSE-to-SL step the single most common tutoring brief in this city. The gap to close is specific: naming a variable versus justifying its range, describing a trend versus explaining a mechanism, and writing to a command term instead of writing everything known. Six to eight focused sessions in DP1 usually close more of that gap than a year of weekly homework supervision.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Biology SL is rarely tutored alone in Dubai. The subjects below are the ones that sit next to it on a Diploma timetable here, and each carries its own failure pattern. A tutor who knows which of these is actually dragging the points total is worth more than one who simply teaches the subject you asked about.

Biology

SL and HL

Two written papers and one scientific investigation at both levels. Standard level drops the higher-level extension content but keeps the command terms and the 24-mark investigation. Marks are lost on explanation questions where students describe a trend rather than give a mechanism.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Shares the investigation structure with Biology and the same four criteria, so a student taking both can be coached once on investigation design and twice on content. Dubai students most often lose marks on energetics and equilibrium reasoning rather than on calculation.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL only

Interdisciplinary, available as either a science or an individuals-and-societies choice. Students who found Biology SL content heavy sometimes move here in DP1. The assessment rewards systems reasoning and named case studies, which is a different writing discipline from Biology Paper 2.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

SL and HL

Overlaps Biology on physiology, energy systems and data handling. A student taking both can reuse one set of statistics skills across two investigations. Marks go missing where answers stay descriptive instead of linking structure to measured performance.

Psychology

SL and HL

Shares the biological approach to behaviour with Biology SL, including hormones, neurotransmitters and genetics. The examination style is different: command terms demand studies, dates and evaluation rather than labelled mechanisms, and that switch catches science-strong students.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

The statistics content here is what a Biology investigation actually needs: correlation, standard deviation, error bars and significance testing. Students taking Biology SL alongside Analysis and Approaches often have the weaker statistical toolkit for their own data analysis criterion.

Physics

SL and HL

Timetabled against Biology in most Dubai IB schools. Shares graph-skills and uncertainty treatment, which transfer directly into the Biology data-based section of Paper 1. Students lose marks there on uncertainty and significant figures, not on biology.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The TOK exhibition and essay sit on the same DP calendar as the Biology investigation, usually in the same term. Families who plan tutoring around one deadline and ignore the other end up paying for emergency sessions in both subjects in the same fortnight.

Extended Essay

Core

A Biology extended essay is a separate 4,000-word project with its own supervision rules and its own research question standard. Support here is process coaching and feedback on the student's own drafts, never drafting or completion of the work itself.

Arabic as an additional language

MoE mandatory

Required in Dubai private schools alongside the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requiring separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs. It takes real timetable space in DP1, which is why a Biology plan built for a Dubai student has fewer free evenings than one built for a student abroad.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Dubai families book Biology SL support, with the AED consequence of each stated plainly. All three run one-to-one over live video, because that is how IB Gram delivers tuition in the UAE.

Weekly one-to-one over live video

One 60 or 90-minute lesson a week through the two Diploma years, timed after the Dubai school run. The tutor works from the student's own class notes, marked work and school scheme of work, so sessions stay in step with what the school is teaching rather than running a parallel course. A short written note goes to the parent after each session naming what was covered and what the student owes before the next one.

  • 90-minute blocks usually cost less per hour than two separate 60-minute lessons
  • Screen sharing lets the tutor annotate the student's own graphs and data tables
  • Sessions are recorded by agreement so a student can rewatch a mechanism explanation

Investigation clinic: a block of four sessions

A fixed block built around the scientific investigation, which is 20% of the Biology SL grade and the component schools have least time to supervise individually. Session one interrogates the research question and the variables. Session two fixes the method and the measurement plan. Session three works on the student's own raw data and uncertainty treatment. Session four reads the student's draft against the four criteria and returns written feedback the student then acts on alone.

  • Feedback is given against criterion letters and mark bands, not vague encouragement
  • The tutor reviews and questions; the student writes, redrafts and submits
  • Best booked in the term before the school's internal deadline, not the week of it

Pre-session intensive before mocks or the May papers

A short run of closely spaced lessons in the eight to ten weeks before mocks or the May examinations, built around timed questions rather than topic teaching. The tutor marks to the published criteria, then uses the student's own mark scheme gaps to choose the next session. This is the format most likely to be booked late in Dubai, and the one where specialist availability is tightest, because every DP2 family in the emirate wants the same six weeks.

  • Paper 1B and Paper 2 technique under exam timing, marked and returned
  • Command-term discipline: state, outline, explain, distinguish, evaluate
  • Booked from January onwards for a May session, because diaries close early here

What an IB DP Biology SL tutor in Dubai costs, tier by tier

An IB DP Biology SL tutor in Dubai costs roughly AED 150 to AED 450 an hour at market rates read in October 2026, with budget online help below that band and named or examiner-tier tutors above it. The table below sets out each tier, the provider who publishes that figure, and what a Biology SL family realistically receives for the money. Every figure is another provider's published rate with the date it was read; none of them is an IB Gram price.

The useful question is not which tier is cheapest but which tier can do the job in front of you. A student who is three months from the May papers and losing marks on explanation questions in Paper 2 needs somebody who has marked Paper 2 answers. A DP1 student who needs weekly structure and homework accountability does not. Paying specialist rates for homework supervision is the most common way Dubai families overspend on tutoring, and paying generalist rates for criterion-level investigation work is the most common way they waste a term.

Read the band alongside two other numbers before deciding. Monthly packages visible in this market run around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai estimates for a weekly one-hour session land at AED 240 to AED 600 a month for budget provision, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. Those monthly figures are the ones that actually hit a household budget, and they are the ones almost no tutoring page in this city prints.

Six things that move the AED number in this emirate

  • Four of the six variables are inside a family's control: length, timing, format and grouping
  • The drive is the largest hidden line item in any in-home quote in the villa belt
  • Specialist supply tightens from January for a May session, and price follows supply

The gap between the bottom and the top of the Dubai band is made of six specific variables, and a family can control four of them. None of this is unique knowledge inside the industry; it is simply never written down on a tutoring page, because the page would rather you call and ask. The table sets each variable against its direction of travel and the reason it bites harder in Dubai than it would in a smaller market.

Two of the six deserve a note. The first is the drive. An in-home hour in Arabian Ranches, Mudon or Dubai Hills carries a 35 to 50 minute approach each way along Al Qudra or Hessa Street, and that time is inside the fee whether the invoice itemises it or not. At AED 300 an hour, a tutor who spends 90 minutes driving for a 60-minute lesson is being paid for 150 minutes of their day by somebody. Online delivery removes that line from the arithmetic entirely, which is why the same AED figure buys measurably more teaching in the villa communities than it does in Al Barsha.

The second is timing. Specialist diaries in Dubai close from January onwards for a May session, because every DP2 cohort in the emirate reaches the same conclusion in the same fortnight. A family booking in March is buying from whatever is left, usually at the top of the band, and often with a tutor who is not a Biology specialist at all. Booking the same support in October costs less per hour and produces more, because there is time for the work to compound. That is the one lever in the list that both saves money and improves the result.

Biology SL assessment: two papers, one investigation, and where the marks go

Biology at standard level is assessed by Paper 1, Paper 2 and one scientific investigation. Paper 1 runs for an hour and a half and splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, together worth 36% of the grade. Paper 2 also runs an hour and a half, mixes short-answer with extended-response questions, and carries 44%. The investigation is worth the remaining 20% and is marked out of 24. The course structure follows the Biology guide with first assessment in 2025, and a family should confirm the exact component timings for their child's cohort with the school's Diploma coordinator, because schools sit different sessions.

The distribution tells a tutor where to work. Paper 2 is the largest single block of marks and the one most responsive to teaching, because it rewards a writing discipline rather than raw recall. The command term sets the task: state wants a fact, outline wants a brief account, explain wants a mechanism with a cause, distinguish wants a pairwise contrast, and evaluate wants a judgement supported both ways. Students who write everything they know about a topic and hope the marks are in there somewhere are the single most common profile we see in Dubai, and it is a fixable one.

The data-based section of Paper 1 is the quiet mark thief. It asks students to read an unfamiliar graph or table from real research and reason from it, which is a skill the MYP trains well and IGCSE trains narrowly. Students who came through Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 are often fluent on content and shaky on uncertainty, error bars and significance. Those are maths habits rather than biology knowledge, which is why a student taking Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation alongside Biology SL frequently outperforms a stronger biologist on this section.

04

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

Twenty per cent of the Biology SL grade is one piece of work the student designs, runs and writes alone, marked out of 24 against four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Nobody in the competitor set names a single criterion, which is strange, because the criteria are where the marks are and they are published. A parent who knows that conclusion and evaluation are twelve of the twenty-four marks will never again accept a draft that stops at a graph.

Research design is lost early and lost quietly. A research question that cannot be answered within the available time, equipment and word count is a six-mark problem disguised as enthusiasm. Dubai students with access to a well-equipped school laboratory often over-reach here, while students planning a database or secondary-data investigation under-specify their variables. The fix is a single session, before any data is collected, spent narrowing the question and writing the variables down with units and ranges.

Data analysis and evaluation are where tutoring earns its fee. Analysis wants processed data, appropriate statistics, uncertainty treated honestly and graphs that answer the question. Evaluation wants the student to name the specific weaknesses of their own method and propose realistic improvements, not generic ones about human error. Conclusion wants an answer to the original question, with reference to the data and to the accepted biology. A tutor can question, challenge and point at the criterion; the student writes every word. That boundary is the difference between legitimate support and an academic-honesty breach.

Online lessons versus an in-home Biology tutor in Dubai

Parents searching for a Biology tutor in Dubai are usually picturing someone at the dining table, so this deserves a direct answer. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Lessons for Dubai families are delivered one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time, with screen sharing so the tutor can annotate the student's own data tables and marked papers. That is stated here rather than buried, because a family that wants somebody physically present should know before booking a trial.

The case for video delivery in this emirate is not a compromise argument. A family in Mudon choosing in-home is choosing from tutors willing to drive to Mudon, which is a much smaller group than the set of Biology SL specialists available at 7pm Gulf Standard Time. The constraint stops being geography and becomes the one that matters: who has actually taught and marked this course. For a niche requirement, such as a student who needs criterion-level investigation feedback in the same week as a school deadline, that difference decides whether the support exists at all.

There are real advantages on the other side, and pretending otherwise is why most comparison tables are useless. A physically present tutor can supervise a distractible fourteen-year-old in a way a screen cannot, can be handed a paper draft, and does not depend on household bandwidth. For a motivated Diploma student working on data and marked papers, those advantages mostly evaporate, while the travel cost does not. The table below sets both out with the AED figures attached.

Counting backwards from the May session

No competitor page in this cluster names a session, a deadline or a results date. That is the easiest gap in the Dubai market to fill, with one caution: IB session and results dates in this project are not verified, because ibo.org blocks automated checking. UAE schools sit the May session, and the milestones below are expressed as windows relative to it rather than as dates. Confirm every date with your school's Diploma coordinator and against ibo.org before planning around it.

The principle that catches families out is that entry deadlines sit months before the examinations, set by the board and administered by the school registrar rather than by the student. Counting the Cambridge June series backwards makes the gap visible: the papers themselves sit in June, forecast grades are collected well ahead of them, and final entries close earlier still, in the spring, on a date the centre receives in writing rather than one a family should assume. A school that misses the entry window has no remedy, and the candidate's next opportunity is the November series rather than a later date in the same term. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who sit the wrong zone timetable, which is the same category of error as a missed entry: administrative, avoidable and unforgiving.

Working backwards also fixes the tutoring budget question from the previous section. If the investigation draft is due early in DP2 and mocks land before it, then the sensible order is investigation support first and paper technique second, not the reverse. Families who book in the eight weeks before the papers are buying the most expensive hours in the Dubai market to fix problems that were cheaper to fix in the autumn. The calendar, not the rate card, is what actually controls what tutoring costs a Dubai household across two Diploma years.

Academic honesty: what a Biology tutor may and may not touch

  • A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on work the student has written
  • A tutor does not write, rewrite, edit to completion or supply data for assessed work
  • Keep dated drafts and feedback notes as evidence of the student's own progression
  • No legitimate provider offers a finished investigation at any price

One provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments. That is an academic-integrity breach, it triggers IB malpractice procedures, and the student carries the consequence, not the seller. A Dubai family paying for Biology SL support deserves the boundary written down, because it is the question most parents are too polite to ask directly and the one that decides whether the money spent protects the Diploma or threatens it.

Here is the line. A tutor may teach the biology, explain what a criterion rewards, ask why a variable was chosen, point out that an evaluation is generic, show how uncertainty is normally treated, read a draft the student wrote and return written feedback on it, and teach the student how to act on their teacher's comments. A tutor may not write the research question, write or rewrite any part of the investigation, supply data, produce graphs for the student to paste in, edit the text to a finished state, or draft any part of an extended essay or TOK essay. Support is teaching, questioning and feedback on the student's own work.

That boundary is also a practical test of a tutor you are considering. Ask what happens if your child sends a draft two days before the school deadline. A legitimate answer describes feedback against the criteria and the student doing the next version. An answer that promises to fix it, polish it or take care of it is describing something the IB treats as malpractice. Keep every draft and every feedback note, because a documented trail of the student's own progression is the best protection available if a question is ever raised.

Tutoring cost in context for a Dubai household

A tutoring rate means little until it sits next to the rest of a Dubai education budget. The one fixed point this year is the fee freeze: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private-school fees in the emirate will not increase for 2026-27, under an incentives package the Dubai Media Office valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Against a flat school fee, tutoring is the variable line, and the arithmetic below shows what each pattern of support actually adds per month at the mid-band rate.

The numbers in the table are arithmetic on the market rates in the first section, not an IB Gram price list. They assume four sessions a month, because a weekly lesson in a UAE school term is four lessons in most months. What the arithmetic shows is that the difference between one lesson a week and two is larger than most families expect across two Diploma years, and that a four-session investigation block is a much smaller commitment than a year of weekly support while addressing the component worth 20% of the grade.

Two further lines belong in the budget and are usually forgotten. The first is examination entry, which for a school candidate is administered through the school and appears on a school invoice rather than a tutoring one. The second is the cost of a late decision: specialist availability in Dubai tightens from January for a May session, so a family that waits pays the upper end of the band for the hours that remain. Planning the block in October is the cheapest version of the same support, and the one with time to work.

Permits, verification and what a Dubai parent can actually check

  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free and valid for two years
  • Ask any tutor whether they hold it; the answer tells you how they operate
  • No published fine schedule exists, so treat quoted penalty amounts with caution
  • A KHDA Educational Services Permit applies to centres with premises, not to online one-to-one tuition

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and this is worth knowing before any money changes hands. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Anyone providing private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you as fact.

The application route is public: MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, and is used through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. A parent can ask a prospective tutor directly whether they hold the permit. A legitimate tutor will answer plainly. A provider who cannot explain the permit, or who implies tutoring is unregulated, has told you something useful about how they operate.

Two further checks are worth making. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school; treat that as press-reported and verify it against current policy. Separately, a tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a specific licence issued to institutions with a physical centre. IB Gram does not hold a regulator licence of that kind, does not operate a UAE centre, and makes no claim of approval or endorsement by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Where a Dubai family lives changes the economics of tutoring more than it changes the teaching. The six communities below cover most of our Biology SL enquiries in the emirate, and each one has a different commute problem, a different school cluster and a different realistic session time.

Dubai Marina and JLT

High-rise families whose children are driven out to school in The Meadows, Al Barsha or Al Sufouh. A 4pm session is unrealistic on a school-run day; 6.30pm and 7.30pm slots fill first, and an online lesson removes a tutor's 40-minute return drive from the bill.

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

The densest IB cluster in the emirate, with several Diploma schools inside a few kilometres. Tutor supply is best here and in-home rates are closest to online rates, because the drive is short. It is also where sibling bookings in the same building are most common.

Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Dubai Hills Estate

Villa communities where an in-home tutor adds a 35 to 50 minute drive each way along Al Qudra or Hessa Street. That drive is the single clearest reason an online hour in these communities buys more teaching for the same AED figure than an in-home hour does.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Served by IB continuum schools and by Diploma schools in Al Garhoud, so students here often come up through an MYP rather than an IGCSE. The usual Biology SL brief in Mirdif is recall and timed-paper discipline rather than investigation design.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Jaddaf

Established British and IB schools along the coast and one bilingual IB school inland. Afternoon traffic on Jumeirah Beach Road and Al Wasl shapes session timing far more than distance does, which is why evening online slots dominate here.

Business Bay, Downtown and Dubai Silicon Oasis

Apartment families with long school commutes in both directions. Students here frequently reach home after 4.30pm, so a 90-minute lesson at 6pm covers more ground than two 60-minute lessons squeezed either side of the commute.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills

The heart of Dubai's Diploma provision, with several IB World Schools within a short radius and the largest concentration of Biology SL cohorts in the emirate. Students from these schools arrive with strong investigation design from a continuum background and need Paper 2 explanation drilling more than content re-teaching.

  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Kings' School Al Barsha

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Jaddaf

Coastal and inland schools running the Diploma alongside strong British provision. Biology SL students from this cluster are often the ones who sat Cambridge IGCSE 0610 two years earlier, which makes the recall-to-explanation gap the dominant tutoring brief.

  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School
  • Deira International School

Arabian Ranches, Mirdif and the southern communities

Villa-belt and eastern Dubai schools where the drive, not the subject, decides how tutoring is delivered. Sustainable City and Dubai Investments Park schools add a further 20 minutes to any in-home visit from central Dubai, which is why almost every booking in this cluster runs over video.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches
  • Uptown International School
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Greenfield International School

School names above are ecosystem context for Biology SL teaching in Dubai; IB Gram claims no affiliation with, endorsement from, or representation of any school named here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level and the deadline

Start with three facts: Biology at standard level, which Diploma year your child is in, and the deadline that is actually worrying you. A school investigation deadline in six weeks and a May session in nine months need different tutors and different session patterns, and saying which it is saves a wasted trial.

  2. 02

Trial lesson with a Biology specialist

A single lesson with a tutor who teaches this course, not a sales call. By the end of it you should have heard which of the four investigation criteria your child is currently weakest on, or which command terms are costing marks in Paper 2. If that diagnosis does not arrive, the match is wrong and we change it.

  3. 03

A written plan mapped to weeks

After the trial, a short written plan: which topics, in which order, against the school's own scheme of work and internal deadlines. It names what happens in the investigation sessions and what gets left out, because a plan that covers the whole syllabus in a Dubai term covers nothing properly.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions, marked work, a running note

Lessons run over live video at a fixed weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time. Work is marked against published criteria and returned. A short note after each session tells the parent what was covered and what the student owes before the next one, so progress is visible without anybody having to ask.

  5. 05

    Review at the mock results

Mock results are the first honest read on whether the plan is working. We review at that point and change the plan if the numbers say so: more paper technique, less content, or a shift onto the component carrying the most recoverable marks for that student.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The price question answered in AED, with sources

Three of six ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote dollars. This page prints the Dubai band in AED, names the provider who publishes each figure and dates it to October 2026, and says clearly which numbers are the market's rather than ours.

Biology SL specialists, not general science help

The tutors matched to this page teach the Diploma Biology course and have marked work against its criteria. That matters most on the investigation, where feedback has to name a criterion and a mark band to be worth anything, and on Paper 2, where the command term decides the mark.

The investigation stays the student's own work

A tutor teaches the biology, questions the design, and gives written feedback on drafts the student wrote. No part of an investigation, extended essay or TOK essay is written, rewritten or edited to completion for a student. Competitors in this market sell completed assessments; that risk lands on the student.

Timed for a Dubai school day

Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time in the slots that survive a Dubai commute, which usually means from 6pm rather than 4pm, plus weekend mornings. During Ramadan, schedules shift to shorter sessions in the morning or well after iftar, agreed with the family rather than imposed.

Honest about coverage

If no Biology SL specialist is free in the window you need, we say so and tell you when one is, rather than putting a general science tutor in front of a Diploma student. Where a match is made outside the UAE, the time zone and the delivery format are stated before any booking.

Online delivery, stated plainly

Tuition for UAE families is one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not run a UAE centre and does not send tutors to homes in Dubai; home visits are offered only in India. Saying that before you book is more useful than discovering it after a deposit.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does an IB DP Biology SL tutor in Dubai charge per hour?+

Market rates read from live UAE tutoring pages in October 2026 put an IB specialist at roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour online, a qualified subject teacher at AED 150 to AED 300, and budget or university-student help at AED 45 to AED 150. In-home visits run AED 180 to AED 500 because the drive sits inside the fee, and named or examiner-tier tutors advertise above AED 500. Those are other providers' published figures with the date attached, not an IB Gram price list. For our own cost, the trial lesson and the written plan that follows it are where the conversation happens, because what a student needs decides how many hours are sensible.

Is Biology SL easier than Biology HL, or just shorter?+

Shorter, not softer. Standard level drops the higher-level extension content, so there is less to learn, but the command terms, the marking severity and the investigation criteria are the same. Paper 2 still rewards mechanism over description at both levels, and the investigation is still marked out of 24 on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Students who choose standard level expecting a gentler exam are the ones most often surprised by their first DP1 Paper 2 mark. The genuine difference for a Dubai family is timetable pressure: standard level leaves more room for a higher-level science or maths, which is usually why it was chosen.

How many hours of Biology SL tutoring does a Dubai student usually need before the May session?+

It depends on which component is losing marks, which is why a trial lesson comes before any block is quoted. Two patterns recur in Dubai. A student who needs the investigation fixed usually needs a focused block of about four sessions, placed in the term before the school's internal deadline rather than the week of it. A student whose content is sound but whose Paper 2 answers wander usually needs weekly work across a term, because writing to a command term is a habit rather than a fact. Families who start in the autumn generally buy fewer hours in total than families who start in March, because there is time for the work to compound.

What is the scientific investigation worth in Biology SL and how is it marked?+

It carries 20% of the standard-level grade and is marked out of 24 against four criteria worth six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. That split is worth knowing, because conclusion and evaluation together are half the marks and they are the two sections students most often rush. Research design is usually lost before any data is collected, through a question too broad for the time and equipment available. Evaluation is lost through generic statements about human error rather than specific weaknesses of the method actually used. Confirm current requirements and word limits with your school's Diploma coordinator, since schools sit different sessions.

Can a tutor help with my daughter's Biology IA without breaking IB academic honesty rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may teach the biology, explain what each criterion rewards, question why a variable was chosen, show how uncertainty is normally handled, read a draft your daughter wrote and return written feedback she then acts on herself. A tutor may not write the research question, draft or rewrite any section, supply data, produce graphs for her to paste in, or edit the text to a finished state. One provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments, which triggers IB malpractice procedures and puts the student's Diploma at risk. Keep dated drafts and feedback notes as evidence of her own progression.

Why does my son score well in Biology SL class tests but drop marks in Paper 2?+

Almost always because class tests reward recall and Paper 2 rewards answering the exact question asked. The command term sets the task: state wants a fact, outline wants a brief account, explain wants a mechanism with a cause, distinguish wants a pairwise contrast, and evaluate wants a judgement argued both ways. A student who writes everything he knows about respiration will score well on a recall test and lose half the marks on an explain question. This is the most common and most fixable profile we see in Dubai. It usually takes a term of marked timed questions rather than more content teaching.

Does IB Gram send a Biology tutor to our villa in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and we do not operate a centre in Dubai. Lessons for Dubai families run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with screen sharing so the tutor can annotate your child's own data tables, graphs and marked papers. Home visits are a service we offer only in India. The practical benefit of video delivery here is the choice it opens: instead of picking from tutors willing to drive to your community, you pick from the Biology SL specialists free at the hour you need, which for a niche requirement decides whether the right tutor exists at all.

Which Dubai schools teach Biology SL as part of the IB Diploma?+

Diploma provision in Dubai clusters in three places. Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills hold the densest group, including GEMS World Academy Dubai, Dubai American Academy, Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Dwight School Dubai and Kings' School Al Barsha. Along the coast and inland sit Emirates International School Jumeirah, Swiss International Scientific School Dubai, Jumeirah English Speaking School and Deira International School. In the villa belt and eastern communities are Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches, Uptown International School, Fairgreen International School and Greenfield International School. These names are context for where the course runs; IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them.

Do private Biology tutors in Dubai need a permit from MoHRE?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published, so treat any quoted amount with caution. Applications go through MoHRE's own service, listed as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with no fee and a stated two-working-day completion time. Ask a prospective tutor directly whether they hold it.

My child is moving from IGCSE Biology 0610 to Biology SL - what is the real gap?+

Three specific things, none of them extra content. First, explanation: IGCSE often accepts a correct description where standard level wants a mechanism with a cause. Second, independence: the investigation asks a student to design something from nothing, including the research question, which no IGCSE practical requires. Third, data handling: the data-based section of Paper 1 uses unfamiliar research graphs and expects honest treatment of uncertainty and significance. Students who scored a 9 or an A* at IGCSE are frequently the ones most surprised by their first DP1 Paper 2 mark, because the habit that produced the top IGCSE grade now actively costs marks.

How does Biology SL tutoring work during Ramadan in Dubai?+

Schedules move rather than stop. School days shorten across the UAE during Ramadan, energy levels change, and evening slots that worked in January stop working. Most families we work with move to shorter morning sessions at the weekend or to lessons well after iftar, and some pause for a fortnight and resume with a longer block. What matters academically is that Ramadan usually falls close to the mock window for a May session, so the term before should carry the heavier content teaching. Agreeing the Ramadan pattern in advance, rather than cancelling week by week, is what keeps a plan intact.

Is Biology SL enough for a medicine application from Dubai?+

Often not, and this is worth checking early rather than in DP2. Many medical schools in the UK, Ireland, Australia and the Gulf ask for Chemistry and frequently Biology at higher level, and some specify minimum higher-level points. Requirements differ by university and by intake year, so the only reliable answer is the one on the admissions page of each university your child is targeting, read this year. If medicine is the target and Biology sits at standard level, the level conversation needs to happen with the school's Diploma coordinator while a change is still possible, usually early in DP1.

Does an IB Diploma count for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency is assessed by the Ministry of Education and the rules differ by curriculum, so the honest answer is to verify your child's case on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate attestation authority. What is published for the British track is specific: five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one accredited Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. No IB points threshold has been confirmed from an official source, so we do not publish one. IB Gram does not perform or guarantee equivalency; it is a ministry process.

How soon can Biology SL lessons start after we enquire?+

Usually within a few days outside the peak window, because matching is limited by specialist availability rather than by geography. From January onwards, for a May session, that changes: Diploma cohorts across the emirate compete for the same slots and specialist diaries close. If no Biology SL specialist is free in the window you need, we say so and tell you when one is, rather than putting a general science tutor in front of a Diploma student. Where a match sits outside the UAE, the time zone and the online format are stated before any booking, so there is nothing to discover afterwards.

What does a Biology SL lesson actually look like over live video?+

The tutor shares a screen, and the material on it is your child's own: a marked paper, a data table from the investigation, a graph that is not answering its question. Work goes back and forth as annotated documents rather than as slides. A typical 60-minute session runs a short diagnostic question, teaching on the specific gap it exposed, then timed practice marked against the published criteria. Sessions can be recorded by agreement so a mechanism explanation can be rewatched during revision. A short written note then goes to the parent naming what was covered and what the student owes before the next lesson.

Start with the diagnosis, not the block of hours

The cheapest Biology SL support in Dubai is the support that targets the right component. Before buying a term of weekly lessons, book one trial lesson and listen for a specific diagnosis: which of the four investigation criteria is weak, or which command terms are costing marks in Paper 2. A tutor who can name that in sixty minutes is worth the specialist band. One who talks about confidence and motivation is not, at any price. Tell us the level, the Diploma year and the deadline that is actually worrying you, and we will say plainly whether a Biology SL specialist is free in that window, what the plan would cover, and what it would leave out.
