Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 Home Tutor in Dubai

Families looking for a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 home tutor in Dubai are usually trying to solve one problem: a child who knows the material and cannot convert it into marks. The fix is marked written work, returned fast, often enough to change a habit. This page shows what that evidence looks like, how an annotated part (c) essay reads, and why a marked script travels faster than a car across this city. Lessons run one-to-one over live video rather than as visits to a Dubai address.

  • An annotated part (c) essay returned every fortnight, not a verbal summary
  • Source answers marked against provenance, purpose and audience
  • A written causal-link log showing which connections keep going missing
  • Free trial lesson, no card details, written findings either way

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The problem a 0470 tutor is usually hired to solve

The most common message a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 home tutor in Dubai receives reads roughly the same every time. The child revises. The child can talk about Weimar or the League of Nations fluently at the dinner table. The essays come back at five or six out of ten and nobody at school has explained why. That is not a knowledge problem, and more revision will not touch it. It is a conversion problem, and the only instrument that diagnoses it is a piece of the student's own writing marked against the published levels by someone who knows what the levels say.

History at this level is assessed almost entirely through writing. Paper 1 is two hours and 60 marks, 40% of the grade, with three questions each split into a 4-mark part, a 6-mark part and a 10-mark part. That means thirty of the sixty marks on Paper 1 sit on part (c) judgement writing. Paper 2 is two hours and 50 marks, 33% of the grade, answered entirely from sources and closing with a 12-mark question on how far the sources support a given statement. The remaining 27% comes from either a 2,000-word coursework assignment or the one-hour Paper 4. Every one of those marks is awarded for something the student wrote, which means every one of them is diagnosable from a script.

What a parent should therefore ask for is not a progress report. It is the script. An annotated part (c) essay shows the exact sentence where the argument stopped developing, whether the counter-argument was present or merely gestured at, whether the evidence was specific or general, and whether the conclusion answered the question or restated the paragraphs above it. Two students scoring five out of ten can have entirely different faults, and the plan for the next month is completely different for each. A number out of ten conceals that. An annotated script cannot.

This is also why the delivery question answers itself on the evidence rather than on sentiment. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. What a Dubai family gets instead is one-to-one teaching over live video, and a marked essay back within two days rather than at the next visit. In an essay subject the turnaround of marked work matters more than the physical presence of the marker, because the student has to attempt the same question type again while the feedback is still live. A tutor crossing the city twice a week cannot mark as much as one who is not driving.

The rest of this page is about what that evidence looks like in practice: the five documents a 0470 file should contain, how the 10-mark levels actually work, the six separable source skills, the boundary a tutor holds around coursework, and how to read your school's internal history data honestly alongside what the regulator publishes.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four 0470 student profiles that need visibly different evidence in the first month. The profile matters more than the year group, because it determines what a marked script should be looking for.

BORDERLINEAges 15-16 · Year 11

The borderline candidate who knows the content

Scores respectably on part (a) and part (b), collapses on part (c), and finishes the paper with time to spare because the long answers are short. The evidence to look for is a marked part (c) in week one and a second on the same question type in week four, with the annotation showing whether the counter-argument appeared the second time.

This is the largest single group among Dubai 0470 candidates, and it is the group most often sold content revision it does not need. A capable student in a large Dubai set rarely gets individual essay feedback more than once a term, because a teacher with twenty-eight scripts cannot. The gap being filled is marking volume, not teaching.

TOP-BANDAges 15-16 · Year 11

The candidate chasing the top band

Already writing eight out of ten and stuck there. The marks are no longer about structure but about the quality of the judgement: whether the conclusion weighs the two sides against each other rather than announcing a preference, and whether the evidence is precise enough to be unarguable. Evidence of movement here is subtle and needs the same question marked twice.

Dubai schools entering large cohorts tend to teach to the middle of the band, which is the right call for a class of twenty-eight and a limiting one for the student already at the top of it. The useful external input is a harsher marker, not a kinder one, and that should be said out loud before the first session.

SCHOOL-MOVEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The student who changed school mid-course

Arrives having studied a different depth study, a different core-content option, or a different exam board entirely. The first evidence needed is a content audit rather than a marked essay: a written list of what the new cohort has covered that this student has not, dated, so the gap is a finite list rather than a general anxiety.

Dubai produces more of these cases than almost any comparable market because families move schools mid-year and the depth-study choice varies between schools in the same community. A student who studied Russia arriving in a Germany cohort has a real content gap, and selling them essay technique first is the most common mistake in this market.

PRIVATE-CANDIDATEAges 15-18 · resit or external entry

The private candidate entered through a Dubai centre

Studying outside a school cohort, often for a November retake. Needs the whole scaffolding a school provides: a schedule, deadlines, timed papers and someone to mark them. The evidence file here is the only record that exists, so it carries more weight: dated timed papers, marked scripts and a chronology test.

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June and a November series, and private candidates in the UAE enter through a centre that accepts external entries. The centre sets its own fee and its own internal deadline, both of which bind earlier than the published series window, so the entry administration needs confirming before any study plan is built around it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Evidence in 0470 is organised by assessed skill, because that is how the marks are awarded. These are the ten things a marked script can show you, with what each is testing and what a weak answer looks like on the page.

The part (a) recall question

0470 Paper 1 · 4 marks

Describe or identify, answered in a few short factual points with no argument required. Candidates lose these marks by writing a paragraph where four bullet-level facts were wanted, which costs time rather than content, and the time is taken from part (c) at the end of the paper.

The part (b) explanation question

0470 Paper 1 · 6 marks

Asks why something happened and rewards a causal chain developed over two or three steps. The diagnostic is whether the answer links a cause to a consequence explicitly. Scripts that list four causes once each sit in the middle band however accurate the content is.

The part (c) judgement question

0470 Paper 1 · 10 marks, three times per paper

How far or to what extent, requiring both sides argued with precise evidence and a conclusion that weighs them. Thirty of Paper 1's sixty marks. The common ceiling is an answer that argues one side well, mentions the other in a sentence, and concludes by repeating the stronger side.

Source comprehension and inference

0470 Paper 2 · opening questions

What a source says and what can be inferred beyond it. The marks are in the source, and the failure is importing remembered content instead of reading what is printed. Quick to diagnose from a script and quick to correct once the student sees it happening.

Cross-referencing two sources

0470 Paper 2

Requires agreement and disagreement handled together, at the level of message rather than topic. Weak answers establish that both sources are about the same subject. Strong answers quote the specific claim in each that conflicts, then explain why two authors in those positions would differ.

Utility and reliability

0470 Paper 2

The single largest source of lost marks in the paper. Writing that a source is biased scores nothing on its own. Utility depends on what you are trying to find out, and a partisan source is highly useful evidence of the attitude it expresses, which is the move most candidates never make.

Cartoon and visual sources

0470 Paper 2

Needs the symbolism decoded, the figures identified and the message tied to the date and context rather than described. Candidates who narrate the picture score in the lowest band; candidates who explain what the cartoonist wanted the reader to think score in the highest.

The 12-mark source judgement

0470 Paper 2 · final question

How far do the sources support a given statement. Answered by grouping the sources that support it, grouping those that do not, and reaching a verdict that refers to provenance. Working through the sources one at a time in printed order almost never reaches the top band.

Coursework argument and structure

0470 Paper 3 · up to 2,000 words, 40 marks

One assignment on the depth study. What the criteria reward is a sustained argument supported by evidence with the counter-case genuinely engaged. The work must be the candidate's own throughout; a tutor marks where evidence is absent and explains what the criteria want.

Chronology, terminology and recall under pressure

0470 across all papers

Dates, names and sequence have to be automatic rather than retrievable, because two hours of writing leaves no capacity for recall effort. A written chronology test, repeated and timed, is the only honest evidence that this has happened, and it is the slowest thing in the course to build.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Dubai families run 0470 support, each defined by the document it produces. All three are delivered one-to-one over live video, and none involves attendance at a UAE address.

The marked-essay retainer

A weekly session plus an annotated part (c) essay returned every fortnight, inside two days of the student writing it. This is the product in an essay subject. It is also the thing a Dubai school with a set of twenty-eight cannot supply at the frequency a borderline candidate needs, however good the department is.

  • One 10-mark part (c) written under timing each fortnight
  • Annotated against the published levels, sentence by sentence
  • A running log of the causal links the student keeps omitting
  • The same question type repeated at week four to test the fix

Source-skills audit block

Six to ten sessions that treat Paper 2 as six separable skills rather than one paper. Each skill gets a diagnosis, a drill and a marked answer, so the evidence shows which of the six moved. It is the fastest measurable change available in 0470 because the skills are habits rather than knowledge.

  • Each of the six source skills marked separately at the start
  • Provenance read before content on every source, as a trained reflex
  • Utility answered as useful for what, never as true or biased
  • A full timed Paper 2 marked at the end of the block

Chronology and recall programme

The least glamorous and most often skipped. A written, timed chronology test on the core content and the depth study, repeated at intervals, with the misses logged. Two hours of exam writing leaves no spare capacity for effortful recall, so automatic knowledge is a precondition for everything else.

  • A dated chronology test with the misses recorded each time
  • Terminology checked for precision, not just recognition
  • Depth-study sequence rehearsed until it is automatic
  • Recall work set between sessions, marked inside the session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a 0470 home tutor is hired to fix, and why marked work beats a visit

The search for a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 home tutor in Dubai is usually a search for individual attention on written work. That instinct is right. Where it goes wrong is in assuming the attention has to arrive in a car. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE, because in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and the comparison below is why that is not the concession it sounds like.

In an essay subject the binding constraint is how much written work gets marked, and how fast it comes back. A tutor driving across Dubai for two sessions a week spends four or five hours in the car, and those hours come out of marking time. A student needs to attempt the same question type again while the annotation is still fresh in mind, which in practice means a two-day turnaround rather than a week. That is a scheduling fact, not a sales argument, and it is the reason the online file tends to be thicker than the in-home one at the same price.

The second real difference is the depth study. Every 0470 candidate studies one in detail, and Dubai schools do not all choose the same one. A visiting tutor must live within a feasible drive of your community and happen to have taught your child's option. Those two constraints multiply, and for a cohort entered for China or South Africa they multiply to very nearly nobody. Removing the drive leaves only the constraint that matters: whether the teacher has taken a cohort through that option and marked its essays.

There is one honest advantage to a visit that video does not reproduce. A tutor in the room controls the environment, which for a thirteen-year-old with no study habits is worth paying for. A Year 11 candidate writing timed essays and source answers is a different case; the work is the same work whether the marker is in the room or on a screen, and the annotation is legible either way.

The five documents a 0470 evidence file should hold

Six weeks of tutoring in an essay subject should leave five specific documents behind. None of them requires you to know history to read, and all five are specific enough to disagree with, which is the point.

The first is an annotated part (c) essay. Not a score: an essay with the levels written against it, the sentence marked where the argument stopped developing, and a note on whether the counter-case was argued or mentioned. The second is a marked source answer, ideally the 12-mark judgement, showing whether the sources were grouped or worked through in printed order. The third is a causal-link log: a running list of the connections the student keeps leaving implicit, which is the single most repeated fault in 0470 writing and the one that moves a part (b) from three marks to five.

The fourth is a dated chronology test with the misses recorded. This is the document families find least interesting and tutors find most predictive, because a candidate who cannot place the Munich Agreement or the Enabling Act in sequence without hesitating is going to spend exam capacity on retrieval that should be spent on argument. Repeating the same test at intervals makes recall measurable rather than assumed.

The fifth is a timed full paper with the minutes recorded per question alongside the marks earned. Two hours across three questions is forty minutes each, and the commonest pattern in Dubai scripts is a generous question one, a reasonable question two, and an unfinished part (c) on question three, which throws away the most valuable single mark allocation on the paper. That pattern is invisible in a grade and obvious in a log.

03

How a 10-mark 'how far' answer actually moves up the levels

Part (c) is worth ten marks and appears three times on Paper 1, so thirty of sixty marks and a fifth of the whole qualification rest on it. It is marked in levels rather than by points, which means marks are awarded for what kind of answer it is rather than for how many facts it contains. Understanding that distinction is usually worth two marks on its own.

The lowest band holds answers that describe. The student writes everything they know about the topic in the hope that the examiner will assemble an argument from it. The next band holds answers that argue one side, often well, with accurate and specific evidence, and either omit the other side or dispose of it in a clause. This is where the capable, well-revised Dubai candidate sits, and it is the most frustrating place to be because the student has done the work and cannot see what is missing.

The band above holds answers that argue both sides with evidence on each. Not a paragraph of argument and a sentence of concession: two developed cases, each supported by named, dated specifics. The top band adds a conclusion that weighs those two cases against one another and reaches a position because of the weighing. A conclusion that announces a view and then repeats the stronger paragraph is not a judgement; it is a summary wearing a judgement's clothes, and examiners are extremely practised at telling the difference.

What a marked script does is locate the answer in that sequence and name the move to the next level. For most candidates the move is mechanical: write the second case properly, then write a conclusion that uses the word because about the relationship between the two. Done twice on the same question type, four weeks apart, the improvement is visible in the annotation rather than inferred from a grade.

04

Part (a) and part (b): the marks everyone treats as warm-ups

Each Paper 1 question opens with a 4-mark part and a 6-mark part, which together carry ten of the question's twenty-five and thirty of the paper's sixty marks. Candidates treat them as a preamble to the real question, and the marked scripts show two distinct costs.

On part (a) the cost is time rather than content. The question asks for description or recall and wants a handful of short factual points. A student who writes a structured paragraph with an introduction has spent eight minutes earning four marks, and those eight minutes come directly out of the part (c) at the end of the paper. The correction is almost absurdly simple: four separate factual statements, no argument, no scene-setting, and move on. It is the cheapest intervention in the whole syllabus and it usually shows up in the next timed paper.

On part (b) the cost is content organisation. Six marks for explaining why something happened rewards a chain developed over two or three steps, so two reasons taken properly beat four reasons asserted. The repeated fault is listing: a student who writes that the Depression caused unemployment, which caused political instability, which caused support for extremism, has built a chain. A student who writes that there was unemployment, instability and extremism has written three nouns. The causal-link log exists precisely to make this visible, because it is the same fault every fortnight until someone names it.

These two corrections are worth doing first for a reason that is partly psychological. They move marks within two or three attempts, which buys the credibility needed for the slower work on judgement writing and chronology. A student who sees their own script improve believes the next instruction; a student told to be patient for a term does not.

05

Six source skills you can measure one at a time

Paper 2 is two hours, 50 marks and a third of the grade, and it is the component that responds fastest to teaching because it is a set of readable habits rather than a body of knowledge. The prescribed topic changes between series, which means the content cannot be the main work and the technique has to be.

The useful move is to stop treating it as one paper. There are six separable skills, each with its own failure mode, and each can be diagnosed and marked on its own. That matters for evidence, because a parent can then see that cross-referencing has moved while utility has not, instead of watching a single paper mark wobble for reasons nobody can name.

The largest single loss in the paper is the utility question, and the reason is a habit taught early and never corrected: writing that a source is biased and stopping. Every source is partial. A politician's speech is weak evidence of what happened and excellent evidence of what that politician wanted an audience to believe, and the mark is awarded for identifying what the source is useful for. Until a student makes that move they are capped, no matter how much content they know.

The table below sets out the six skills, the failure that shows up in scripts, and the drill that fixes it. Each is marked separately at the start of a block and again at the end, which is what converts six to ten sessions of source teaching into evidence rather than a feeling that it went well.

06

Draft feedback and the boundary a tutor holds

If your child's cohort sits Paper 3, 27% of the grade is a single assignment on the depth study, limited to 2,000 words and marked out of 40. It is the component where the question of what a tutor may legitimately do becomes sharpest, and where this market contains services that should be avoided entirely.

What a tutor can do with a draft is substantial. They can ask whether the question can be answered inside the word limit. They can mark every place where a claim is asserted without evidence. They can point out that the counter-case has not been engaged, that a paragraph is doing no work, or that a conclusion does not follow from what precedes it. They can explain what the published criteria reward and show, using an exemplar, what the difference between two bands reads like. All of that is teaching, and all of it is feedback on work the student has already produced.

What a tutor must never do is produce assessed material on a candidate's behalf, in whole or in part. The assignment has to be the student's own work from the first word to the last. Cambridge's regulations treat malpractice as the candidate's problem, which means the person who loses the entry is the child, not the service that sold the text. Competitor research in this market found a provider selling finished internal assessments outright; what they are really selling is a risk transferred entirely onto a sixteen-year-old.

There is a related boundary around materials. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the board's copyright material, and a tutor who offers to supply them as downloads is telling you something about how else they operate. The correct route is to reference them, link to cambridgeinternational.org, and work through the school, which holds proper access. Most Dubai history departments release past material readily when a parent asks.

07

What progress looks like across one Dubai school term

A term is roughly twelve teaching weeks, which in a fortnightly marking rhythm is six marked scripts. That is enough to see a trend and short enough that a wrong plan can be abandoned without losing the year. What follows is the shape a term usually takes, written out so you can tell early whether yours is on it.

Weeks one and two are diagnosis. A timed part (c), a marked source answer, a chronology test, and a decision about which of the three is the binding constraint. Weeks three to six are the fast corrections: part (a) length, part (b) causal chains, provenance-first reading. These produce visible movement, and if they do not, the diagnosis was wrong and should be changed rather than repeated more loudly.

Weeks seven to ten are the slow work. Judgement writing at part (c) and the 12-mark source question are the two things that genuinely take a term, and they are also where the remaining marks are. Expect a dip here. A student who has been told to argue both sides will, for two or three attempts, do neither fluently, and a mock landing in this window can come back lower than the one before it. Being warned about that in week one is the difference between holding the plan and abandoning it at exactly the wrong moment.

Weeks eleven and twelve are consolidation: a timed full paper, marked inside two days, with the minutes recorded per question. By then the file holds six marked scripts in sequence, a causal-link log that should be shorter than it was, and two dated chronology tests. The table sets the same thing out as a checklist, and the honest use of it is to ask in week six whether what should exist does.

Reading your school's history data honestly

Parents in Dubai are given two kinds of information about how a child is doing in history, and both need interpreting rather than accepting. The first is internal: predicted grades, term assessments and mock results. The second is external: the school's published inspection outcome from KHDA, which oversees the quality of private education in Dubai and inspects on a six-band scale.

Internal history grades carry a specific distortion worth knowing about. Essay marking is a judgement, and judgements drift. A department marking generously in the autumn term so that students do not lose confidence will mark closer to the standard in the spring, and the student's apparent decline is the marking converging on reality rather than the student getting worse. The reverse happens too. The only way to see through it is to have a second marker apply the published levels to the same script, which is precisely what an external marked essay provides.

Predicted grades deserve similar care. A prediction is a professional estimate made for a purpose, often an application deadline, and it is not a measurement. A useful conversation with the head of history asks what the prediction is based on: which assessments, marked by whom, and against which criteria. A department that can answer that in detail is giving you reliable information. One that cannot is giving you an impression, which may still be correct but cannot be checked.

The inspection band is the least precise of the three for this purpose, because it is a whole-school judgement across phases and subjects rather than a statement about a single option set. Two questions get further. Ask how many students are in the Year 11 history set and who teaches them. And ask how often the department marks a full part (c) essay against the published levels, because a department doing that every three weeks produces candidates who need very little outside help, and one doing it twice a year produces the exact problem that brought you to this page.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities our 0470 students write from

Because lessons run over video, where a family lives no longer sets who can teach them. It still shapes what the marked scripts show, because the schools differ. These are the communities our 0470 students write in from, with what their work tends to reveal.

Umm Suqeim, Al Manara and Al Safa

Established British-curriculum schools with experienced humanities departments. Scripts from here are usually well structured and capped around eight out of ten, so the useful work is on the quality of the judgement rather than on essay shape.

Nad Al Sheba, Meydan and Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Newer schools with rapidly growing cohorts and young history departments. Marked work tends to show students who have been taught the content carefully and have seen very few top-band exemplar essays, so they do not know what one reads like.

The Greens, The Views and Barsha Heights

Apartment communities with high family turnover and frequent mid-course arrivals. The first useful document here is often a content audit rather than a marked essay, because the depth study at the previous school was frequently a different one.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Mixed-curriculum cluster with large cohorts and wide ability spreads inside a single set. Scripts show the clearest gains from marking volume, since a class of this size cannot receive fortnightly individual essay feedback from its own teacher.

Motor City, Sports City and Dubai Studio City

Villa and townhouse communities where evening sport competes hard with written homework. The timing log matters most here: students are capable and routinely leave the third part (c) unfinished because the first question was answered too generously.

Palm Jumeirah and Al Sufouh

Short school runs to several large schools and a high proportion of students taking additional academic support. The common pattern is a confident writer who has never been marked harshly, which is exactly what an external second opinion is for.

Business Bay, Downtown and Dubai Creek Harbour

Apartment living with little study space and long evenings. Sessions here usually need to be fixed rather than flexible, and the evidence that matters most is the dated timed paper, because consistency is the thing most at risk.

International City, Warsan and Al Quoz

Price-sensitive communities where families most often ask for a short, sharply aimed block. The source paper is usually the right answer: a third of the grade resting on technique that can be drilled in six to ten sessions.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Schools serving Umm Suqeim, Al Safa and Jumeirah Park

Long-established British-curriculum cohorts with deep past-paper stocks and consistent internal marking. A marked script from one of these departments is generally reliable, so external marking works as a second opinion rather than a correction.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Safa British School

Schools serving Nad Al Sheba, Meydan and Academic City

Newer and fast-growing secondary cohorts where history sets are small. A small set means a fortnight's absence removes a whole topic, and it also means fewer exemplar essays circulating in the room for students to measure themselves against.

  • Repton School Dubai
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • GEMS FirstPoint School
  • Hartland International School

Schools serving The Greens, Barsha Heights and Emirates Hills

High-mobility communities where students arrive mid-course from other curricula and other boards. The most common issue in this cluster is a depth-study mismatch between the old school and the new one, which is a content problem rather than a technique one.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a piece of your child's writing

One marked part (c) essay or a mock script is worth more than any description of the problem. It shows within minutes whether marks are going on recall, explanation, judgement or the clock. We read it before the trial lesson so the free hour teaches rather than discovers what the script already said.

  2. 02

Confirm the depth study and the paper route

Which depth study the cohort is entered for, whether the core content is Option A or Option B, and whether the final 27% comes from coursework or Paper 4. Three facts, one email to the head of history, and they decide which teacher is the right match rather than merely an available one.

  3. 03

Take the free trial and read the written findings

One lesson, no card details, no obligation. The teacher works on a single real weakness instead of giving an overview, and you receive a short written note afterwards: what they found in the script, what they would change first, and what evidence would show it had worked. Keep the note either way.

  4. 04

Fix the marking rhythm before anything else

An annotated part (c) essay every fortnight, returned within two days of being written, plus a marked source answer in the alternate weeks. Agree this at the start. A month that produces no marked script is a month in which nothing measurable happened, whatever was discussed in the sessions.

  5. 05

Review the file at week six and say the uncomfortable thing

Six weeks produces three marked scripts, a causal-link log and a chronology test. If the fast corrections have not landed, the diagnosis was wrong and we change it, or change the teacher, or tell you to stop. Repeating the same plan more insistently is the failure mode we are trying to avoid.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The marked script is the product

In history the lesson is the delivery mechanism and the annotated essay is the thing you are buying. Every fortnight you receive a part (c) marked against the published levels with the sentence identified where the argument stopped developing, not a number out of ten or a summary of the conversation.

Two-day turnaround, because nobody is driving

A student has to attempt the same question type again while the feedback is still live. A tutor crossing Dubai twice a week loses four or five hours to the road, and those hours come out of marking. Teaching over live video is what makes the fortnightly rhythm hold.

Depth-study match stated before you book

Dubai schools do not all enter the same depth study, and a tutor who has not taught your child's option will learn it at your expense. We say which options a teacher has actually taken a cohort through, and say so plainly when the answer is none of yours.

The dip is predicted, not explained away

A student learning to argue both sides writes worse for two or three attempts before writing better, and a mock in that window can come back lower. Flagging it in week one is honest. Discovering it in week eight is how good plans get abandoned at the worst possible moment.

Clear limits on coursework support

A tutor marks where evidence is missing, asks whether the counter-case has been engaged and explains what the criteria reward. Assessed material is never produced for a candidate. Cambridge penalises the student rather than the seller, which makes any other arrangement a risk transferred onto a child.

No board or regulator endorses us

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson approval and runs no UAE office. We name what each body does and link to its own pages. Lessons are online and in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India, which is stated here rather than buried.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How will I know a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 tutor is working?+

By the documents, not the reports. Within six weeks you should hold an annotated part (c) essay with the levels written against it, a marked source answer showing whether the sources were grouped or answered in printed order, a causal-link log listing the connections your child keeps leaving implicit, a dated chronology test with the misses recorded, and a timed paper with minutes logged per question. All five can be read in ten minutes by someone who knows no history, and all five are specific enough to argue with.

Will a tutor visit our villa in Dubai Hills, or is the 0470 lesson online?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, and in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Lessons for Dubai families are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. In an essay subject that is an advantage rather than a compromise: a tutor who is not spending four hours a week in traffic marks more written work and returns it faster, and the choice of teacher is no longer limited to people who happen to live near your community and happen to know your depth study.

What does arguing both sides actually mean on a 10-mark 0470 question?+

Two developed cases, each supported by named and dated evidence, not one argument and a sentence of concession. A part (c) asking how far something was responsible wants a genuine case for and a genuine case against, roughly comparable in weight, followed by a conclusion that weighs them against one another. The commonest ceiling in Dubai scripts is an excellent single-sided answer with the other view mentioned in a clause. That answer is capped regardless of how much content the student knows, which is why it is so frustrating.

Why does my daughter get full marks on the first part and three out of ten on the last?+

Because the three parts want three different kinds of writing and only the first one rewards recall. Part (a) is four marks of short factual statements. Part (b) is six marks for a causal chain developed over two or three steps. Part (c) is ten marks for judgement: both sides argued, evidence specific, conclusion weighing the two. A student strong on recall will shine on part (a) and plateau on part (c) until someone marks a part (c) against the levels and shows them the specific structural move that is missing.

How many 0470 past-paper questions should be marked each week?+

Fewer than most families imagine, marked better. One part (c) essay written under timing and properly annotated every fortnight, with a marked source answer in the alternate week, is a sustainable rhythm that produces six scripts a term. Volume without marking teaches almost nothing, because the student repeats the same fault with more confidence. The useful discipline is repeating a question type four weeks later to test whether the correction held, which is the only comparison that controls for the difficulty of the question.

What does a marked Paper 2 script actually show a parent?+

Which of six separable skills is costing marks. Comprehension errors mean your child is answering from memory instead of reading the printed source. A weak cross-reference means they established the topic rather than the conflicting claim. A utility answer that says the source is biased and stops is the single largest loss on the paper. A cartoon narrated rather than decoded is another. And the final 12-mark answer either groups the sources for and against or works through them in printed order, which is visible at a glance.

How does a tutor check my son has learned the right dates and names?+

With a written, timed chronology test, repeated at intervals, with the misses recorded each time. It is the least interesting document in the file and the most predictive. Two hours of exam writing leaves no spare capacity for effortful recall, so a candidate who hesitates over the sequence of events is spending on retrieval what should be spent on argument. Repeating the same test in week two and week eight turns recall from something everybody assumes into something you can see on paper.

Can a tutor comment on a 0470 coursework draft without breaking Cambridge rules?+

Yes, and that is the correct use of the time. A tutor can mark every claim asserted without evidence, ask whether the question can be answered inside 2,000 words, point out that the counter-case has not been engaged, say that a conclusion does not follow, and explain what the published criteria reward. What a tutor must not do is produce assessed material on the candidate's behalf, in whole or in part. The assignment must be the student's own work throughout, because Cambridge's malpractice rules fall on the student rather than on anyone else.

How long before a 0470 grade actually moves?+

The short-part corrections usually show in two or three attempts: part (a) length and part (b) causal chains move quickly because they are mechanical. Judgement writing at part (c) and the 12-mark source question take most of a term, and there is a predictable dip in between, when a student instructed to argue both sides does neither fluently for a few weeks. A mock landing in that window can come back lower. Judge the work by the annotated scripts in sequence rather than by any single grade.

What should happen in the first 0470 session?+

Teaching, not an introduction to the syllabus. We read the marked script beforehand, so the hour goes on one real weakness identified in advance: the structure of a part (c), or provenance-first source reading, or the length of part (a) answers. By the end there should be a dated diagnosis naming whether the binding constraint is content, technique or timing, and a short written note to you saying what would be tackled first and what evidence would prove it worked.

Does my child need to memorise exact statistics for 0470?+

Precision matters more than volume. What earns marks is evidence specific enough to be unarguable: a named person, a dated event, a particular policy or treaty clause. A rough figure used confidently is worth more than a precise one recalled hesitantly, and a vague gesture at a decade is worth nothing. The practical standard is whether your child can support each major argument with two specifics they can state without pausing. That is a shorter list than most revision guides imply, and a harder one to fake.

How do history sessions fit around a Dubai school run and after-school sport?+

The slot is fixed in Gulf Standard Time and held weekly, which is possible precisely because nobody is driving to it. Families in Motor City, Sports City and the villa communities usually take a later slot after training, and those in apartment communities often prefer earlier. During Ramadan, when school days shorten and concentration moves to the evening, sessions commonly shift to a post-Iftar time for the month. None of that requires renegotiating a travel window, so the fortnightly marking rhythm survives the change.

What does a tutor do if the school has moved past a topic my child never understood?+

Decide honestly whether it is worth going back, and say which option is being dropped. A 0470 candidate carries two core-content periods, a depth study and a source topic at once, and there is not time to repair everything. The marked script ranks the gaps by marks available rather than by how uncomfortable each feels. Sometimes the answer is to leave a core-content topic thin and spend the hours on the source paper, which is a third of the grade and responds faster. A plan that pretends to cover everything covers nothing.

Can we see the tutor's marking against the official criteria?+

Yes, and you should ask for it from the first script. An annotated essay shows the level the answer sits in, the sentence where the argument stopped developing, and the specific move to the next band. What a tutor cannot do is hand you Cambridge's mark schemes or past papers as files, because those are the board's copyright material. The proper route is to reference them, link to cambridgeinternational.org, and work from the school's own stock, which most Dubai history departments release readily when a parent asks.

What if the first 0470 tutor is not the right match?+

We change the teacher and hand over the file with them, so the next person starts from the marked scripts and the causal-link log rather than re-diagnosing from scratch. Mismatch is usually about marking style rather than competence: a student near the top of the band needs a harsher marker, and one who has lost confidence needs the corrections sequenced to produce an early visible gain. Say so early. Six weeks of a wrong match costs more than the change does, in a year with a fixed number of fortnights in it.

Send one essay, and ask what it shows

The quickest way to find out whether a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 home tutor in Dubai can help your child is to send a single piece of their writing. A marked part (c) or a mock script tells an experienced marker within minutes whether the marks are going on recall, explanation, judgement or the clock, and that determines everything about what the next term should look like. Send it with the depth study, the core-content option and whether the cohort sits coursework or Paper 4, and take the free trial lesson. You will get a written note of the findings whether or not you continue. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
