IB and IGCSE tutors for Shakhbout City families

IB and IGCSE tutors for Shakhbout City work with a very particular household: a mainland villa, two or three school-age children, and a school run that finishes somewhere between Khalifa City and Al Raha. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, so the tutor your child gets is chosen for the syllabus sitting in front of them rather than for how close they live to Shakhbout City. This page sets out who studies here, where they go to school, and what they usually get stuck on.

  • Every UAE lesson runs one-to-one over live video, not at a villa
  • Tutors matched to the syllabus code your child's school actually entered
  • Every AED figure on this page is a market rate with its source named
  • Coursework gets teaching and feedback; the student writes every word

IB & IGCSE in Shakhbout City

Who studies in Shakhbout City, and what they are actually stuck on

Shakhbout City sits on the mainland between Khalifa City and Mohammed Bin Zayed City, and it is almost entirely villas. That single fact shapes the tutoring question here more than anything else. A villa household usually means siblings at two or three different stages at once - a primary child, a Year 10 sitting IGCSEs, a Year 12 in the Diploma Programme - and one parent covering more than one school gate. By the time everybody is home, the clock reads somewhere between four and five, and nobody has eaten yet.

Very few children here attend a school inside the community itself. The private schools that Shakhbout City families use are clustered a short drive away: the Khalifa City campuses, the Al Raha corridor along the highway, and for a minority the island. That commute is short by Abu Dhabi standards and long by most other standards, and it means a tutor who has to drive to the villa is being paid for the driving as much as for the teaching. The local market prices that in openly, and the published bands show it.

The academic pressure points follow directly from the school mix. The Khalifa City school run and the Al Raha corridor feed schools that run British curricula into IGCSE and then split: some continue into a British sixth form, others into the Diploma Programme. A Year 11 student in Shakhbout City is therefore often being taught towards one qualification while choosing another, and the two make different demands. Maths is where this shows first. A grade 8 in Cambridge IGCSE 0580 does not automatically survive contact with Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, because the Extended tier rewards fluent procedure and the Diploma rewards proof, modelling and the ability to explain why a method works.

The second pressure point is the mandatory UAE stream. Private schools in the Emirates are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, and must still adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. For a Shakhbout City child in a British or IB school, that means Arabic as a first language or as an additional language sits on the timetable next to physics, assessed on its own terms, taught by a different department, and reported in the same way. Families tell us this is the subject that came as a surprise in Year 9, not Year 12.

Lessons for every family in this community are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; that is a service offered only in India. What online IB tutoring in Shakhbout City gives a parent instead is a tutor drawn from a far larger pool - a Chemistry Higher Level specialist, a teacher who has taught Cambridge IGCSE 0580 for a decade, an Arabic first-language teacher - rather than whoever happens to be free and living within a twenty-minute drive of the community.

At a glance

  • Villa households with siblings at three different stages, sharing one after-school window
  • Schools in Khalifa City, along the Al Raha corridor and on the island; almost none inside the community
  • Cambridge IGCSE Extended to Diploma Higher Level is the step that breaks the most maths grades
  • Arabic, Islamic studies and social studies sit on the timetable regardless of the licensed curriculum
  • ADEK licenses and inspects the schools; the MoHRE permit governs the tutor
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Shakhbout City children are spread across three IB programmes and two IGCSE boards, often inside one family. The notes below describe what each stage asks of a student in this part of Abu Dhabi specifically - what the school covers in class, and what is left for the evening.

PYPAges 3-12 - FS2 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP is inquiry-led and has no external examination, which is exactly why parents of younger Shakhbout City children rarely book tutoring until something specific goes wrong. The two things that do go wrong are number fluency and written English. A child can move confidently through units of inquiry and still arrive in Year 7 unable to handle fractions without a calculator or write a paragraph with a controlling idea.

In a villa community where most households run a mix of languages at home, the PYP's open-ended writing tasks can hide a vocabulary gap for two or three years. Tutoring at this stage is short, weekly and narrow: reading aloud, spelling patterns, times tables to automaticity. Thirty minutes twice a week over live video does more than ninety minutes on a Friday, and it fits around a sibling's Diploma schedule.

MYPAges 11-16 - Years 7 to 11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP assesses against four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight, and reports those criterion letters rather than a percentage. Parents who know percentages find this opaque. A student scoring 6 for Criterion A knowing and understanding and 3 for Criterion D applying mathematics in real-life contexts has a very specific problem, and it is not revision.

Shakhbout City students who move from an MYP school into a Diploma school, or the reverse, lose time to the mismatch. Raha International School runs the MYP; several Khalifa City schools run GCSE and IGCSE over the same years. A Year 9 transferring between them finds the content broadly similar and the assessment language completely different. Tutoring here is mostly translation work: teaching the student what each criterion descriptor is asking for.

DPAges 16-19 - Years 12 to 13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. The internal assessments are worth roughly a fifth to a quarter of most subject grades and they all fall due in the same two months of Year 13. Diploma Programme sciences are where Shakhbout City families ask for help most, because the content load and the practical write-up land together.

The May session is the one Abu Dhabi schools sit, and it is the only session most schools in this corridor enter. That makes the Year 13 autumn term the real deadline: internal assessment drafts, Extended Essay submissions and predicted grades for university applications all stack into it. A Shakhbout City student with three Higher Levels and an Extended Essay in a fourth subject needs the calendar worked backwards from January, not from April.

IGCSEAges 14-16 - Years 10 to 11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

Most Shakhbout City children sitting IGCSEs take between seven and ten subjects across two years, with maths and the sciences tiered. Cambridge splits Core and Extended; Pearson Edexcel runs a single tier on most specifications with different paper structures. The board matters because the papers, the formula sheet and the command words differ even where the physics is identical.

The schools around Khalifa City and Al Raha do not all use the same board, and some run Cambridge in the sciences and Edexcel in maths. The first thing to establish before booking IGCSE tutoring in Shakhbout City is the syllabus code on the entry - 0580 or 0607 for Cambridge maths, 4MA1 for Edexcel - because a tutor teaching the wrong one will drill the wrong paper structure for a term before anyone notices.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

These are the subjects Shakhbout City households book most often, with the specific failure point in each. The list is deliberately narrow: a tutor who claims every subject at every level is a tutor who has not specialised in any of them.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The Higher Level course adds proof by induction, complex numbers and a Paper 3 that asks for sustained investigation rather than recall. Students arriving from a strong Extended IGCSE grade usually lose marks on justification, not calculation: a correct answer with no reasoning scores a fraction of the available method marks.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Applications is not the easy option, it is the statistical one. The graphical display calculator is assumed throughout and students who never learned the regression, chi-squared and hypothesis-test routines lose whole questions. Higher Level adds matrices, graph theory and Voronoi diagrams, none of which appears in an IGCSE scheme of work.

Physics

HL and SL

The common failure is not mechanics but the quantitative treatment of fields and circuits, plus the data-analysis skills the internal assessment assumes. Students who can state a law and not propagate an uncertainty through it lose marks twice over, in Paper 2 and in the practical write-up.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and the energetics calculations carry the heaviest Higher Level loading, and the reactivity patterns reward memory plus reasoning rather than either alone. Shakhbout City students on medicine and engineering routes take this at Higher Level more often than any other science.

Biology

HL and SL

Biology punishes imprecise language. A six-mark question on membrane transport needs the correct terms in the correct order, and answers that describe the right process in everyday words score poorly. The statistics in the internal assessment catch out students who chose biology to avoid maths.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy decides most of the grade. Axes labelled wrongly, a shift drawn instead of a movement along, or an unlabelled new equilibrium cost marks no amount of written explanation recovers. Higher Level adds quantitative questions that reward arithmetic discipline.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The Paper 1 guided analysis of an unseen non-literary text is where Shakhbout City students most often underperform, because school teaching concentrates on the set texts. Individual Oral preparation is a separate skill again: a ten-minute structured argument linking a global issue to two works.

Arabic as a first language

MYP, DP Language A and the mandatory stream

Arab students in international schools in Abu Dhabi carry Arabic as a first language and are assessed on grammar, classical texts and formal writing, with Standard Arabic as the language of instruction. Students fluent in spoken dialect at home can still be two years behind in written Standard Arabic.

Business Management

HL and SL

The command terms do the grading. Distinguish, evaluate and examine want different structures, and a strong general answer written against the wrong command term caps at a middling band. The internal assessment research project needs a real organisation and a decision worth analysing.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

At IGCSE the questions Shakhbout City parents ask are narrower, and almost always board-specific. These five account for most of the requests from Years 10 and 11.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Extended and Core, Pearson Edexcel 4MA1

Extended tier adds functions, transformations of graphs, vectors and harder trigonometry. Students entered at Core cannot score above grade C or 5 whatever they do on the day, so the tier decision taken in Year 10 is the single most consequential one.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 and 0972, Pearson Edexcel 4PH1

Electricity and the moments-and-momentum questions carry the most marks lost. The Cambridge alternative-to-practical paper tests experimental reasoning on paper and rewards a student who has read other people's method descriptions critically.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 and 0971, Pearson Edexcel 4CH1

Mole calculations and the qualitative analysis tables are the two blocks that separate grades 7 and 9. Students who learn the tests for cations and anions as a table rather than as chemistry forget them under pressure.

Biology

Cambridge 0610, Pearson Edexcel 4BI1

The syllabus is long and the examinable detail is specific: named enzymes, named vessels, named stages. Shakhbout City students doing well in class and badly in mocks are usually revising topics rather than practising the command words.

English as a Second Language and First Language English

Cambridge 0510, 0511 and 0500

The two courses look similar and grade very differently. Choosing First Language English for a student whose written register is still developing costs a grade; choosing ESL for a fluent writer costs a university entry condition later.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every request from this community, and all three run over live video. The right one is decided by how many children are in the house and how close the next exam series is.

Weekly one-to-one, fixed slot

One subject, one tutor, the same hour every week through the term. This is the format that works for a villa household because the slot can be set against the latest school arrival rather than the earliest, and the tutor builds a picture of the student across months rather than reacting to whatever is due on Thursday.

  • Same tutor, same hour, booked by term
  • Scheduled after the last child is home, typically from 16:30
  • Annotated work saved and sent after each lesson

Two children, back-to-back slots

Where a household has a Year 11 and a Year 13, two consecutive hours with two different specialists keeps the whole evening in one block rather than scattering lessons across four nights. The subjects are unrelated and the tutors are different people; what is shared is the time window and the household's internet connection.

  • Consecutive hours on one evening, two separate specialists
  • Keeps three other weeknights clear for homework and sport
  • Each child reported on separately

Exam-term block before the May session

A fixed number of hours concentrated into the ten to twelve weeks before the exams, built around past-paper work rather than syllabus teaching. Booked as a block because the work is finite: a known number of papers, a known set of weak topics, and a date that does not move.

  • Diagnostic paper first, then a topic order set by the marks lost
  • Timed questions under exam conditions, marked against the published scheme
  • Ends with the final session before the first paper, not an open-ended plan

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Shakhbout City

01

What a Shakhbout City family is really buying

  • One evening window, several children, schools in three directions
  • The need is usually a named paper or component, not a whole subject
  • Specialist over video beats generalist in the room for technical components
  • Fixed weekly hour, annotated work saved, short written note after each session

A parent searching for IB and IGCSE tutors in Shakhbout City is usually solving a scheduling problem and a specialism problem at the same time. The scheduling problem is that this is a mainland villa community whose children attend schools in three different directions, so the household has one usable evening window and several competing claims on it. The specialism problem is that the subject causing trouble is rarely general maths or general English. It is Chemistry at Higher Level, or the Cambridge alternative-to-practical paper, or written Standard Arabic.

Those two problems pull against each other in the local market. A tutor who can be at a Shakhbout City villa at five o'clock is selected by geography. A tutor who genuinely specialises in Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is selected by subject, and there are not many of them in any one neighbourhood of any city. The more specific the need, the smaller the pool of people who can drive to you, and the larger the pool of people who can teach you over video.

This is the honest case for delivering every UAE lesson online. It is not that video is a substitute for sitting beside a student. It is that for a defined, technical, syllabus-coded need, the choice is between a specialist on a screen and a generalist in the room, and for Paper 3 of Analysis and Approaches the specialist wins. For a Year 4 who needs reading practice, the calculation is different, and a parent reading aloud at bedtime beats both.

What a family gets, concretely: a tutor matched to the board and syllabus code on the entry, a fixed weekly hour set against the real arrival time from the Khalifa City school run, written work annotated on screen and saved, and a short note after each session saying what was covered and what to practise. No tutor travels to a UAE address, because that is not a service IB Gram sells here.

02

Where Shakhbout City children go to school, and what comes home with them

The first useful question is not which tutor, but which paper. Shakhbout City children are entered by their schools for particular specifications, and the schools in this corridor do not agree with each other. One Khalifa City school enters Cambridge for the sciences and Pearson Edexcel for maths. Another runs the full IB continuum from the Primary Years Programme through to the Diploma. A third stops at GCSE and sends students to a British sixth form that uses yet another board.

Abu Dhabi's Department of Education and Knowledge licenses and inspects all of them. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, publishes inspection outcomes, and approves the curricula schools are permitted to deliver. For a parent, the practical use of that is twofold: the school's licensed curriculum tells you which board your child is entered with, and the published inspection report tells you where that school is strong. Neither tells you which of your child's six subjects is going wrong, which is what tutoring has to find out.

The table below maps the schools this community actually uses against what they teach and what families subsequently ask us for. The last column is a record of requests, not a judgement on any school. A high volume of requests for Physics from one campus usually means that campus enters a demanding specification, not that it teaches it badly.

What comes home differs by stage in a predictable way. From the primary years it is reading and number fluency. From Years 7 to 9 it is criterion-based feedback a parent cannot decode. From Year 10 it is tier decisions and past papers. From Year 12 it is internal assessment deadlines colliding with university applications, all compressed into the autumn of Year 13 because the May session is the one these schools sit.

Abu Dhabi tutoring rates in AED, and who publishes them

Three of the six best-ranking tutoring pages for this kind of search publish no price at all, and the two that do quote US dollars, which is not the currency any Abu Dhabi household transacts in. So here are the market bands in AED, attributed. These are not IB Gram's prices; they are what the Abu Dhabi and wider UAE market charges, taken from providers' own published rate pages and from Bestimate's 2026 tutoring cost table.

The pattern across every source is consistent. A university-student or budget online tutor sits between AED 45 and 150 an hour. A qualified subject tutor working online runs roughly AED 150 to 300. A tutor travelling to a villa runs AED 180 to 500 once travel is priced in, which is the single clearest number on this page: the same teaching costs more when someone has to drive. An IB, IGCSE or A Level specialist sits at AED 200 to 450 and above, and a named premium or examiner-led tutor can reach AED 650, which BartyED publishes openly.

Monthly packages behave differently again. Online packages of eight sessions have been advertised at around AED 799 a month; in-home packages of four two-hour sessions at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. A Shakhbout City family with two children in exam years should budget against the top two rows of that table, not the first.

What IB Gram does rather than publish a rate card is run a consultation and a trial lesson, then quote against the actual subject, level and number of hours. The reason is not coyness. A Higher Level Chemistry specialist and a Year 5 reading tutor are not the same purchase, and a single hourly figure covering both would be misleading for one of them.

Online lessons versus a tutor driving to the villa

This is the comparison a Shakhbout City parent is actually making, so it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales paragraph. A tutor in the room has real advantages: a younger child stays on task more easily, handwriting and practical work are easier to supervise, and nobody has to manage a connection. Those advantages are concentrated in the primary years and in subjects where the physical artefact matters.

Against that sit four costs that get understated. The travel is paid for, whether it appears as a higher hourly rate or as a two-hour minimum. The tutor pool shrinks to people who can reach this part of the mainland in the late afternoon, which for a niche Higher Level subject can mean nobody. A cancelled slot is usually lost rather than moved, because the tutor built a driving route around it. And the lesson start time is set by the traffic, not by the household.

Online one-to-one over live video reverses each of those. The hour is teaching only. The pool is every specialist on the platform rather than every specialist within a twenty-minute drive. A missed Tuesday can become a Thursday without anybody re-planning a route. And the slot can be set against the latest school arrival in a household with three different finishing times, which in Shakhbout City is the normal case rather than the exception.

To be plain about what is and is not sold here: IB Gram does not send a tutor to any UAE address. Home visits are an India-only service and the UAE service is online, one-to-one, over live video. The table sets the two models side by side on the terms that matter in this community.

Arabic, Islamic studies and social studies alongside a British or IB timetable

  • Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies run alongside every licensed international curriculum
  • Arab and non-Arab students take different courses, usually in separate classes
  • Standard Arabic is the language of instruction for the first-language and Arab Islamic streams
  • Tutoring supports the school's prescribed content; it does not substitute different material

Every private school in the Emirates teaches Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies whatever international curriculum it is licensed for. Federal rules do not oblige a private school to follow a specific curriculum beyond those subjects, but they do oblige it to follow the Ministry's general regulations, and the emirate regulator approves what is delivered. For a Shakhbout City child this is not a footnote on the timetable. It is several periods a week, reported on, and for Arab students assessed in Standard Arabic.

Two streams run in parallel and they are genuinely different courses. Arabic as a first language is for Arab students and assesses grammar, classical and modern texts and formal written register, taught in Standard Arabic. Arabic as an additional language is for non-Arab students and starts from spoken competence. A child who speaks dialect fluently at home is an Arab student for timetabling purposes and will sit the first-language course, which is where the gap appears: conversational fluency and written Standard Arabic are two different skills, and the second one is examined.

Islamic education is taught in Standard Arabic for Arab students and in the school's curriculum language for non-Arab students, and separate classes for the two groups are the norm rather than an option. Social and moral studies follow the same split. None of this is optional, none of it is negotiable by a parent, and the content is set centrally, so a tutor cannot substitute different material to make it easier.

What tutoring can do is narrow. For Arabic as a first language it is written register, grammar drills and text analysis, taught by a teacher who works in Standard Arabic. For Islamic education and social studies it is reading comprehension, structured written answers and vocabulary, aligned to what the school actually sets. What it cannot do is replace the school's prescribed material with something more convenient, and a tutor offering to do that is offering something the regulations do not permit.

The IGCSE Extended to Higher Level gap, subject by subject

  • Maths: procedure becomes justification, plus a Paper 3 with no IGCSE equivalent
  • Sciences: recall becomes uncertainty, error propagation and argument from data
  • English: set texts become unseen analysis and a timed individual oral
  • The content is continuous; the assessed skills are not, and that is the gap

This is the single most common reason a Shakhbout City family in the Al Raha corridor contacts a tutor in November of Year 12. A student finished Year 11 with grade 8s and 9s, started three Higher Levels, and came home with a 3 or a 4 on the first report. Nothing has gone wrong with the student. The assessment has changed underneath them, and nobody told them how.

In maths the change is from procedure to justification. Cambridge IGCSE 0580 Extended rewards a correct method executed cleanly. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level rewards an argument: state the assumption, show the step, say why it follows. Paper 3 asks for sustained investigation across a single extended context, which is not a thing the IGCSE ever asked for. A student who writes down the answer and stops will lose most of the method marks on a question they fully understood.

In the sciences the change is from recall to data. IGCSE physics and chemistry reward knowing the content. Diploma physics and chemistry reward handling uncertainty, propagating error, criticising a method and arguing from a graph. The internal assessment is a twelve-page scientific report with its own criteria, and students who were never taught to write one spend their first attempt learning the format rather than doing the science.

In English the change is from set texts to unseen analysis and oral performance. In economics it is from description to diagram accuracy under time pressure. The pattern is the same everywhere: the content is continuous and the skills are not. Tutoring in the first term of Year 12 is therefore mostly about teaching the new assessment language, which is cheap to fix early and expensive to fix in Year 13.

Who is allowed to tutor privately in the UAE

  • Private tuition work permit: Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued by MoHRE
  • Free of charge, valid two years, stated completion time of two working days
  • Eligible: school teachers, government and private employees, students aged 15-18, university students
  • No published fine schedule exists, so treat any quoted amount as unverified

Private tutoring in the Emirates is a permitted activity with a permit attached, and a Shakhbout City parent is entitled to ask about it before the first lesson. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page lists a two-working-day completion time with the application made through its smart app, website or e-services system.

The eligible categories are wider than most parents expect. Teachers registered in government or private schools may apply, as may employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged between fifteen and eighteen. Individuals who provide private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; the ministry has not published a schedule of amounts, so any specific figure a website quotes should be treated with suspicion.

One restriction matters particularly in Abu Dhabi. Professional-ethics rules reported for private and charter school staff in the emirate bar teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's own code of conduct has been reported to carry the same bar. Treat that as press-reported rather than as a quotation from a policy document, and verify it against the current ADEK publication if it matters to your decision. The practical consequence is the same either way: your child's own class teacher is not the right person to hire privately.

A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal again, requiring an educational services permit for a training institute from KHDA. IB Gram runs no premises in the Emirates and holds no regulator permit of that kind, and says so rather than implying otherwise. What it does is match UAE families with tutors for online one-to-one lessons, and the permit question is one a parent should put directly to any individual they are paying.

08

What a tutor may and may not do with an internal assessment, Extended Essay or TOK essay

  • Allowed: subject teaching, criterion explanation, scoping a research question, feedback on a draft
  • Not allowed: supplying any text that appears in the submission
  • Heavy line-editing crosses the same line as authoring the work
  • Supervisors sign the authenticity declaration and similarity checks apply

This is where the market in this search gets genuinely dangerous, and a Shakhbout City parent should know what the boundary is before paying anyone. At least one site ranking for these queries sells finished Internal Assessments at a published price. Buying one is academic malpractice under IB rules, the consequence falls on the student rather than the seller, and the sanction can end a Diploma.

Here is the line. A tutor may teach the underlying subject content. A tutor may explain each assessment criterion and what the descriptors are asking for. A tutor may discuss whether a research question is viable and narrow enough. A tutor may read a draft the student has written and give feedback on structure, clarity and whether the evidence supports the claim. A tutor may teach referencing conventions and how to use them.

A tutor may not supply text that ends up in the submission. Not a paragraph, not a worked data analysis, not a rewritten conclusion, not a corrected bibliography typed out for copying. The student's supervisor at school has to sign that the work is the student's own, and IB procedures include similarity checking. The distinction parents sometimes miss is that heavy line-editing crosses the same line as writing: if a sentence in the final document was composed by the tutor, it is not the student's work.

The practical version for a Year 13 in this community is a sequence. Choose the research question with the tutor asking hard questions about scope. Produce the first draft alone. Bring it to a session and leave with a list of specific problems to solve. Solve them alone. Repeat twice. That sequence raises marks reliably and leaves the authorship where the regulations require it, and it is also what makes the difference between a tutor and an essay mill.

Where we tutor

Shakhbout City and the communities around it

Shakhbout City does not function as an island. Its school runs, its tutoring patterns and its traffic all belong to a wider mainland corridor. These are the neighbourhoods that share its schools and its evening timetable.

Khalifa City

Directly north and the single biggest destination for the Shakhbout City school run. Several British and IB schools sit within its grid, which is why the 7.30am and 3pm pressure points here are shared.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

South and west, denser and more mixed in housing. Families here often use the same Khalifa City schools, so the same tutors are asked for the same subjects within a fortnight of each other.

Al Raha Gardens

East along the highway, and the home of the main full IB continuum school in this corridor. Shakhbout City students who moved from a British school into the MYP usually moved in this direction.

Al Raha Beach

Apartment and waterfront living next to Al Raha Gardens, with a British school that continues into the Diploma Programme. The IGCSE-to-DP question is asked more here than anywhere else nearby.

Al Reef

Further out towards the airport, villas and apartments around a central souk. Commutes are longer, which pushes the earliest workable lesson slot later into the evening for families here.

Saadiyat Island

Across the bridges and a genuinely different school market, with a British school charging towards the top of the emirate's fee range. A handful of Shakhbout City families make that run daily.

Yas Island

Reached by the same highway, with an American-curriculum academy. Students here ask about Advanced Placement and SAT preparation rather than Higher Level papers, which changes the tutor profile entirely.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Shakhbout City

Khalifa City and Shakhbout City

The closest cluster and the one most Shakhbout City children belong to. The schools here run British curricula into IGCSE and GCSE, with one American-curriculum school offering an IB Diploma track, so households in the same street can be sitting completely different Year 11 papers.

  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Reach British School
  • The Pearl Academy

The Al Raha corridor and the island

The schools a Shakhbout City family drives to when they want an IB continuum or a specific sixth form. The Al Raha corridor is twelve to twenty minutes east in ordinary traffic; the island adds the bridges, and in practice adds a further half hour on a weekday afternoon.

  • Raha International School
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi

Schools are named here as the context Shakhbout City families work in; IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them and claims none.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the board and the syllabus code

Not the subject - the specification. Cambridge 0580 or Pearson Edexcel 4MA1, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard. If you do not know, the school's entry confirmation or the front page of a past paper the student has sat will say. This one detail prevents a term of teaching the wrong paper structure.

  2. 02

A short consultation about the timetable, not just the subject

We ask what time the last child is actually home, which nights are already taken by sport or the mandatory Arabic homework, and which week the next mock falls in. In a Shakhbout City villa with children at two or three schools, the slot is as much of a constraint as the subject, and getting it wrong is why tutoring arrangements collapse in week five.

  3. 03

A trial lesson with the matched specialist

One hour with the tutor who would teach the term, not a sales call with a coordinator. The tutor sets a short diagnostic - a past-paper question, a piece of written work - and comes out of it with a view on whether the problem is content, technique or confidence. If the match is wrong, say so and we match again rather than persuading you.

  4. 04

A fixed weekly slot, with written notes after each session

The same hour each week, the same tutor, and a short note afterwards saying what was covered, what was marked and what to practise. Work annotated during the lesson is saved and sent. Parents get the note; the student gets the practice list. Neither is a progress score, because a weekly percentage invented by a tutor is not information.

  5. 05

Reviewed against the exam calendar, counted backwards

Before each term we set the plan against the real dates: entry deadlines, mock windows, internal assessment deadlines set by the school, and the May session the Abu Dhabi schools sit. Cambridge and Pearson publish their own timetables, and entries close months before the papers. Working backwards from those dates is what turns tutoring into a plan rather than a habit.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on the specification, not the postcode

Because every UAE lesson is online, the pool is every tutor on the platform rather than every tutor who can reach this part of the mainland by five o'clock. For a Higher Level science or a specific IGCSE board that is the whole difference between a specialist and whoever was available.

Figures with their source attached

Every AED band on this page names who published it and when. Three of the six strongest competing pages for this search publish no price at all, and two quote dollars. A parent should be able to check a number, and a number nobody will attribute is not worth planning around.

A stated position on coursework

Teaching, criterion explanation and feedback on the student's own draft. No supplied text, no completed internal assessments, no rewritten conclusions. That is said plainly because the alternative is sold openly in this market and the student carries the consequence, not the seller.

Scheduling built around the Khalifa City school run

Slots are set against the latest arrival in the household rather than an idealised four o'clock. For a villa family with children at a Khalifa City school, an Al Raha school and possibly one across the bridges, that distinction decides whether the arrangement survives past half term.

Honest about what we do not have

No premises in the Emirates, no regulator accreditation, no home visits in the UAE, and no tutor for every niche subject on every evening. Where a subject is not covered by a UAE-hours tutor we say so and offer the alternative rather than quietly filling the slot with a generalist.

Built on the regulators, not around them

ADEK licenses the schools, MoHRE issues the tutor permit, and the Ministry of Education runs equivalency. Those are the three bodies that actually govern your child's education in Abu Dhabi, and knowing what each one does is more useful to a parent than any marketing claim about accreditation.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Shakhbout City: your questions answered

Do you send a tutor to a villa in Shakhbout City?+

No. Every UAE lesson is delivered one-to-one over live video, and IB Gram does not sell home visits anywhere in the Emirates - that is a service offered only in India. The reason is practical rather than ideological: the specialists Shakhbout City families ask for, such as Chemistry at Higher Level or Cambridge 0620 qualitative analysis, are not reliably available within driving distance of this community on a weekday evening. Online delivery means the tutor is chosen for the syllabus rather than the postcode, and the hour you pay for is teaching rather than teaching plus travel.

Which schools do Shakhbout City students usually attend?+

Almost none inside the community. The common destinations are the Khalifa City campuses immediately north, the Al Raha corridor east along the highway, and for a minority the island schools across the bridges. That spread matters because those schools do not use the same boards: some run Cambridge, some Pearson Edexcel, some the full IB continuum, and some stop at GCSE before a British sixth form. Before booking anything, check which specification your child is actually entered for, because the paper structures differ even where the subject content looks identical.

How much does IB tutoring cost for a Shakhbout City family?+

Market rates in Abu Dhabi, as published by providers and by Bestimate's 2026 rate table, run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor online and AED 200 to 450 and above for an IB or IGCSE specialist. A tutor travelling to a villa sits higher, around AED 180 to 500, because travel is priced in. Premium named tutors reach AED 650, which BartyED publishes. IB Gram quotes after a consultation and trial lesson rather than publishing a single rate, because a Higher Level Chemistry specialist and a Year 5 reading tutor are not the same purchase.

Can one tutor take two children in the same Shakhbout City household?+

One tutor can take two children in the same subject and stage, and that does happen with siblings a year apart in IGCSE maths. More often the two children need different specialists, in which case two consecutive hours on the same evening works better than scattering lessons across the week. The practical constraint in a villa is bandwidth and quiet rooms rather than tutor availability: two live video lessons in the same house at the same time needs two separate spaces, which is usually easier here than in an apartment.

How late can a lesson start after the Khalifa City school run?+

Most Shakhbout City households settle on a start between 16:30 and 18:00. The binding constraint is the last arrival, not the first: a family collecting from a Khalifa City school and an Al Raha school on the same run is home later than either timetable suggests. Later slots up to about 20:00 work for Year 11 and above, and are often better because homework is already done. For primary-age children an earlier, shorter session twice a week beats one long evening lesson.

My child got a grade 8 in IGCSE Extended maths and is failing Maths AA HL. What happened?+

The assessment changed, not the student. Cambridge 0580 Extended rewards a correct method executed cleanly; Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level rewards an argument, with the assumption stated and each step justified. Paper 3 asks for sustained investigation across one extended context, which the IGCSE never required. Students who write the answer and stop lose most of the method marks on questions they fully understood. This is the most common reason families in this corridor make contact in November of Year 12, and it is far cheaper to fix then than in Year 13.

Do you cover Arabic as a first language for students in this community?+

Yes, and it is one of the more frequent requests from Shakhbout City because so many households here are Arab families in British or IB schools. Arabic as a first language assesses grammar, classical and modern texts and formal written register, with Standard Arabic as the language of instruction. The usual gap is between fluent spoken dialect at home and examined written Standard Arabic, which are different skills. Tutoring concentrates on written register, grammar and text analysis against whatever the school has actually set, rather than substituting different material.

Is my child's tutor required to hold a MoHRE permit?+

An individual providing private tuition in the Emirates needs the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued by MoHRE. It is free of charge, valid for two years, and MoHRE's service page states a two-working-day completion time. Teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen can all apply. Those tutoring without a permit face fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No official fine schedule has been published, so treat any specific amount you see quoted as unverified.

Can a teacher at my child's own Shakhbout City school tutor them privately?+

It is reported that professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff in Abu Dhabi bar teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and that the MoHRE permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. Treat that as press-reported rather than as a quotation from a current policy document, and check the ADEK publication directly if the answer matters to a decision you are making. The practical position for a Shakhbout City parent is straightforward: hire someone other than the person who teaches and reports on your child at school.

How quickly can a Shakhbout City family start lessons?+

For mainstream requests - IGCSE maths, Diploma sciences, English, Arabic - a match and trial lesson is usually arranged within a few days. Narrow combinations take longer: Higher Level Further Mathematics, a specific second-language option, or a subject needed in a fixed slot that clashes with an evening the tutor already teaches. Where nothing suitable is available in UAE evening hours we say so rather than filling the slot with a generalist, and the honest answer is sometimes that the subject will be covered by a tutor working from a different time zone.

What does ADEK actually do, and does it regulate tutors?+

The Department of Education and Knowledge supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi emirate, approves what they may deliver, and publishes inspection outcomes. It regulates schools, not individual private tutors. Tutors sit under MoHRE's private tuition work permit instead, which is a separate federal arrangement. For a Shakhbout City parent the useful split is this: use ADEK's published material to understand your child's school, and ask the tutor directly about the MoHRE permit. Neither body accredits tutoring platforms, and any provider claiming regulator approval should be asked to produce the permit number.

Can a tutor help with the Chemistry internal assessment?+

A tutor can teach the chemistry, explain each assessment criterion and what its descriptors require, question whether the research question is viable, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor cannot supply text that ends up in the submission, cannot produce the data analysis, and cannot rewrite the conclusion. Heavy line-editing crosses the same line as writing it. The sequence that works is: scope the question together, draft alone, bring the draft to a session, leave with specific problems, solve them alone, repeat. That raises marks and keeps authorship where the regulations require.

Does the Extended Essay really have to reach four thousand words?+

Four thousand words is the upper limit, not a target, and examiners stop reading at it. An essay of three thousand six hundred well-argued words scores better than four thousand two hundred words with the argument buried. The components that cost marks are usually the research question being too broad, the sources being summarised rather than interrogated, and the reflections being written in the last week. For a Shakhbout City student in Year 12, the realistic plan is to settle the question before the summer and have a complete first draft before the Year 13 autumn term gets busy.

What happens if no UAE-based tutor covers the subject we need?+

We tell you, and then offer the alternative rather than quietly assigning a generalist. The usual alternative is a specialist teaching from outside the Emirates in a slot that still lands in your evening, which for Gulf Standard Time works well with tutors in South Asia and reasonably with Europe. What we will not do is put a general science tutor into a Higher Level Chemistry slot and let the family discover the mismatch in February. No competitor page found in this market discloses a coverage limit at all, which is why it is stated here.

Do lessons continue through Abu Dhabi school holidays?+

They can, and for exam-year students they usually should. The autumn half term and the winter break both sit at useful points before the spring mocks, and a short block of past-paper work during a holiday is worth more than the same hours during a busy term. Ramadan changes the shape rather than stopping it: sessions commonly move later, after Iftar, and many families prefer shorter and more frequent lessons. Summer is the window for the IGCSE-to-Diploma bridge, which is the gap that otherwise shows up on the first Year 12 report.

Start with the syllabus code, not the search

If you are weighing up IB and IGCSE tutors in Shakhbout City, the most useful ten minutes you can spend is finding out exactly which specification your child is entered for and which component is losing the marks. Bring that to a consultation and the match becomes straightforward: a specialist in that paper, a weekly slot set against the real time everybody is home from the Khalifa City and Al Raha school runs, and a trial lesson before any term is committed to. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, every figure quoted is attributed, and if the right specialist is not free in your window you will be told rather than matched anyway.
