IB Home Tutor in Shakhbout City

Most families looking for an IB home tutor in Shakhbout City are not at the start of the Diploma. They are part-way through a term with a deadline coming, and the real question is what the next eight weeks have to achieve. This page is built as a calendar rather than a brochure: the two Diploma years counted backwards, the school deadlines that bite before any exam does, where Ramadan sits, and how live one-to-one online lessons fit a villa community's evening.

  • Work planned backwards from your school's own deadlines
  • Ramadan scheduling built in, not treated as an interruption
  • Live one-to-one video — IB Gram runs no UAE home visits
  • Free trial lesson before any commitment

IB & IGCSE in Shakhbout City

Start from the deadline and work backwards

Shakhbout City is a villa community on the Abu Dhabi mainland, within the broader Khalifa City corridor and sitting between Khalifa City and Mohammed Bin Zayed City. It was built as family housing rather than as a commercial district, the streets are compound rather than tower, and most children here attend one of the international schools in that corridor or in the communities immediately around it. It is, in short, a neighbourhood of school runs and homework tables.

What brings a parent here to a search engine is almost never curiosity about the Diploma. It is a date. An Internal Assessment draft due in three weeks. A mock series starting after the break. A Theory of Knowledge essay that has not been started. A Mathematics exploration with a topic that will not carry the mathematics. The useful response to that is not a description of the IB; it is a plan that runs backwards from the date.

Which is why this page is organised as a calendar. The Diploma is two years long and it has far more deadlines than families expect, most of them set by the school rather than by the IB. The external examination window gets all the attention and arrives last. The internal coursework calendar arrives first, repeatedly, and across six subjects at once, and that is where Diploma terms actually go wrong.

One important limit on what this page will tell you. IB exam and results dates are set by the IB and revised from time to time, and we publish none of them here, because the only version worth acting on is the one your school's IB coordinator holds. Abu Dhabi schools enter the May session; beyond that, ask the coordinator and write the dates down. A tutoring page quoting an IB date to you is offering you a liability dressed as a service.

On delivery, the direct answer to the search. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. In-home visits are a service we run in India only, and no tutor will arrive at a Shakhbout City address. Lessons are live one-to-one video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, with the tutor chosen for the named course and level rather than for proximity.

That is a calendar argument as much as a logistics one. A tutor whose week is a driving route cannot move a session into the fortnight where three deadlines collide, because the route is the business. An online slot can shift, double for a defined period, and pause across an exam week without being reassigned. In a Diploma year that flexibility is worth more than any individual hour.

What follows is the calendar in detail: the two years counted backwards, the internal deadlines that govern a term, how Ramadan reshapes revision, mock season as diagnosis rather than prediction, the boundary on coursework help, and what the market charges per term rather than per hour.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A Shakhbout City family may be at any stage of an IB education, and each stage has a different calendar shape. These are the four, with what each one's year actually looks like.

PYPAges 3–12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units of inquiry rather than discrete subjects, with no external examination. Assessment is continuous, teacher-led and portfolio-based, culminating in the Year 6 Exhibition. The calendar is gentle and the support that matters is mechanical: number fluency, reading stamina, writing structure, and the habit of recording thinking rather than only answers.

In a villa community the practical constraint at this age is the length of the day rather than any deadline. A primary child home at four after a school run is better served by thirty or forty focused minutes than by an hour, and an online session from the kitchen table avoids a second journey at the end of an already long afternoon.

MYPAges 11–16 · Years 7–11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked out of 8 and converted to a 1 to 7 grade by school-set boundaries, with no external papers unless the school enters eAssessment. The calendar is a steady rhythm of criterion-marked tasks rather than a build towards one window, and the Personal Project runs through Year 10 or 11.

The deadline that matters here is the Personal Project, which families consistently underestimate because it has no external examination attached. It is a long piece of independent work with a process journal, and a student who starts it late produces a thin report regardless of how good the product is. Mark it on the calendar in September of the year it falls.

DPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three Higher and three Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Every subject carries an Internal Assessment worth roughly a fifth to a quarter of its grade. The externally examined papers arrive at the end; the internal deadlines arrive continuously across both years, across all six subjects at once.

Abu Dhabi schools enter the May session. We publish no IB dates here — confirm every one with your school's IB coordinator, including the internal deadlines, which are the ones that actually structure a term. The commonest Diploma failure in this emirate is not weak teaching; it is six internal calendars colliding in one fortnight that nobody mapped in September.

CPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

Career-related Programme

At least two Diploma courses alongside a career-related study, a reflective project, a personal and professional skills course, service learning and language development. The Diploma-course components are assessed identically to the full Diploma, so their calendars are the same, with the reflective project adding its own.

A smaller cohort in Abu Dhabi than the full Diploma but a real one. The calendar advantage is that there are fewer internal deadlines to collide, and the risk is that the reflective project receives no attention until late because it sits outside the subject timetable. Treat it as a deadline with the same weight as an Internal Assessment.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma courses Shakhbout City families most often need, with the internal component each one carries — because that component is what sets the term's deadlines.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebra, calculus and proof, with HL adding a third paper of extended investigations. Its internal component is an individual exploration of twelve to twenty pages, which needs a viable topic chosen a term before the draft is due.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology-led problem solving. The exploration here usually rests on data the student gathers, which adds a collection stage to the calendar that students forget to budget for.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics, waves, electricity, fields and nuclear physics with HL extensions. The internal investigation needs an experiment designed, run and written up, and uncertainty analysis treated as a criterion rather than an appendix.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Stoichiometry, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms. The investigation requires laboratory access through the school, so its timing is constrained by the school's own schedule, not only by the student's.

Biology

HL and SL

Cells, molecular biology, genetics, ecology and physiology. The data-based paper separates grades, and the investigation often involves fieldwork or a long data-collection window that has to be planned months ahead.

Economics

HL and SL

Micro, macro, the global economy and development. The internal portfolio is three commentaries on real published articles, each with its own deadline, which spreads the workload across both years rather than concentrating it.

Business Management

HL and SL

Organisational structure, human resources, finance, marketing and operations. The HL research project needs a focused question early; a vague one cannot be rescued in the final term no matter how many hours are bought.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Literary and non-literary texts, the Individual Oral, the HL Essay and guided analysis. The Individual Oral has a fixed recording window set by the school, which makes it one of the least movable deadlines in the Diploma.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition of three objects with commentaries, and an essay on a prescribed title. Both have school-set deadlines and both are routinely left until they collide with subject Internal Assessments in the same fortnight.

The Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent essay with a supervisor and staged school deadlines for proposal, interim draft and final submission. Those staged deadlines are the whole calendar: a student who meets them writes a decent essay almost automatically.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Shakhbout City families work with us, each sized to a point in the calendar rather than sold as an open-ended arrangement.

A deadline block

Three to six sessions aimed at a specific school deadline: an Internal Assessment draft, a Theory of Knowledge essay, an Extended Essay interim submission. It starts when the deadline is named and ends when it passes, which makes it the easiest thing on this page to budget for.

  • Scoped to one named deadline
  • Works on the student's own draft, criterion by criterion
  • Ends when the deadline does

Weekly subject teaching across a term

A fixed slot with the same tutor, working a week ahead of the school's scheme rather than behind it. This is what moves a subject grade across a term, and it is worth buying where the gap is broad rather than tied to one date.

  • Same tutor and slot, 60 or 90 minutes
  • Planned against the school's own assessment calendar
  • Can double for a defined period around a collision

A pre-mock or pre-session intensive

Two or three sessions a week in the run-up to mocks or to the examination window, built from the student's own scripts. Diagnostic first: a real paper under timing, the repeating errors named, then those drilled. It ends with the papers.

  • Starts with a timed paper marked on the real rubric
  • Targets error patterns, not syllabus coverage
  • Finishes with the exam rather than rolling on

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Shakhbout City

01

What the next eight weeks actually have to achieve

  • List every date in the window that somebody other than your child controls
  • Work out what each one needs already finished, and when
  • Aim any tutoring at the deliverable that cannot move
  • A window with no immovable date is the cheap window — use it on habits

Answer first, because this is why most Shakhbout City families arrive here. In any eight-week stretch of a Diploma year there is one thing that genuinely has to be delivered and several that merely feel urgent. Identifying which is which is the whole of the planning, and it takes twenty minutes with a calendar rather than a consultation.

The test is simple: which of these dates is set by someone other than my child? A school Internal Assessment deadline is set by the school and moving it requires permission. A mock date is fixed. An Individual Oral recording window is fixed. A subject test is fixed. Against those, a self-imposed revision plan or a vague intention to "catch up on chemistry" has no date at all and will lose every collision with something that does.

So the eight-week plan starts by listing every externally imposed date in that window across all six subjects plus the core, and then asking what each one requires to be already done. An Internal Assessment deadline in week six requires a complete draft by week four, which requires a method and data by week two, which means the work starts now rather than in week five. Written out, most Diploma crises turn out to have been visible eight weeks earlier.

That list is also the brief for any tutoring. A block of sessions aimed at the one deliverable that cannot move is worth more than the same number of hours spread across three subjects by feel. And where the list shows nothing immovable in the next eight weeks, the honest answer is that this is the cheap window — the moment to fix habits and close content gaps rather than to buy crisis hours.

02

The Diploma counted backwards

Families plan forwards from today and run out of weeks. The Diploma rewards the opposite: start at the end and work back, because every stage has a predecessor that has to be complete before it can begin. This is not a scheduling nicety; it is the difference between an Extended Essay written across a year and one written across a fortnight.

Read backwards, the two years have a clear shape. The examination window sits at the end of DP2 and nothing can be changed by then. The weeks before it are for timed papers and error patterns only. Before that, the final internal submissions for Internal Assessments, Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, which in most schools cluster in the first half of DP2 and are the real pressure point of the whole programme. Before that, DP1 is for choosing topics, gathering data, doing the laboratory work and establishing the habits that make DP2 survivable.

The stage families skip is topic choice, and it is the cheapest stage and the most consequential. A Mathematics exploration with a topic that cannot carry mathematics at the course level, or an Extended Essay with a research question too broad to answer in 4,000 words, cannot be rescued by effort later. Half an hour of interrogation at the proposal stage saves a term.

We publish no IB dates in the table below, deliberately. The stages are universal; the dates are your school's and the IB's. Get them from your IB coordinator in September of DP1, write them on one sheet, and the rest of this plan builds itself.

Internal deadlines beat external ones, every time

Parents arrive focused on the examination window because it is the thing with a name. Students experience something different: a continuous sequence of school-set deadlines across six subjects and three core components, any two of which can land in the same week. That sequence, not the examination, is what determines whether a Diploma year goes well.

The arithmetic is worth seeing. Six Internal Assessments, each with at least a proposal, a draft and a final submission. An Extended Essay with staged submissions and supervisor meetings. A Theory of Knowledge exhibition and essay, each with its own drafts. That is well over twenty school-set dates across two years, set independently by different departments, none of whom are coordinating with each other around your child's particular combination.

The single most valuable thing a Diploma family can do costs nothing: collect every internal deadline in September, put them on one sheet in date order, and find the collisions. There is always at least one fortnight with three deliverables in it. Knowing about it in September means the Economics commentary gets written in October instead. Discovering it in the week itself means a compromise on all three.

This is also where online tutoring has a structural advantage that is easy to overlook. A session can double in frequency for three weeks around a collision and return to normal afterwards, because nothing depends on a tutor's route through the city. A visiting tutor with a fixed driving schedule cannot do that, which means the help is available in the weeks you did not need it and unavailable in the week you did.

Ramadan, school holidays and when revision actually happens

A UAE academic calendar is not a European one with the names changed, and a revision plan written as though it were will fail in a predictable place. Ramadan falls inside the school year, school days are shortened, family routines change substantially, and the hours when a teenager can concentrate move later. None of that is an obstacle if it is planned for, and all of it is an obstacle if it is discovered.

In practice, sessions move to post-Iftar timing and the slot is held rather than reassigned. That works well and students are often sharper then than in a shortened school afternoon. What does not work is pretending the month is a normal one: three subjects scheduled at the usual times, homework volumes unchanged, and a mock series immediately afterwards with no adjustment. The sensible plan treats the month as a lower-intensity period and loads the weeks either side.

The same logic applies to the long summer break and to the mid-year break. These are the only extended stretches in a Diploma where a student has uninterrupted time, which makes them the natural home for the work that needs continuity: data collection, an Extended Essay draft, a Mathematics exploration write-up. A student who arrives in DP2 with an Extended Essay draft written over the summer is in a materially different position from one who does not.

Travel is the other UAE-specific variable. Families in this corridor travel, sometimes for weeks, and an in-home arrangement simply stops when they do. An online slot follows the family, which in a Diploma year means a three-week absence costs nothing rather than costing a unit.

THE UAE ACADEMIC YEAR AND WHAT EACH PERIOD IS GOOD FOR
PeriodWhat changesBest used forWhat to avoid

05

Mock season is data, not a prediction

  • A mock grade is a weak prediction and excellent diagnostic data
  • Sort every lost mark into knowledge, method, command term or timing
  • One or two sessions on the scripts beats three of general revision
  • Do not schedule new content in the fortnight either side of mocks

Mock results produce more anxiety per unit of information than anything else in a Diploma year, and the anxiety is misdirected. A mock grade is one data point from one day under unfamiliar conditions, often on partially taught content, marked by a teacher calibrating against a boundary set internally. As a prediction it is weak. As teaching material it is the best thing the school will produce all year, and most of it gets filed.

What a marked mock script shows is how your child behaves under timing. Which question they abandoned. Where they ran out of minutes. Whether the lost marks are knowledge, method presentation, command-term misreading or time management — four completely different problems with four different fixes, indistinguishable from the grade alone and obvious from the script.

So the high-value move after mocks is not more revision. It is one or two sessions spent working through the scripts, question by question, naming each loss and sorting it into those four categories. The output is a short list that tells you where the remaining months should go, and it frequently contradicts what the family assumed. A student "weak at physics" turns out to be losing eleven marks to running out of time and four to physics.

There is a scheduling point too. The fortnight either side of mocks is swallowed by them, so any tutoring planned in that window should be either mock preparation or script review, not new content. Families who book ordinary weekly sessions straight through mock season pay for hours the student has no capacity to use.

06

Where a Shakhbout City afternoon fits

The geography here is kinder than in much of the emirate, and it is worth saying so rather than manufacturing a problem. Shakhbout City sits inside the Khalifa City corridor, which holds the densest concentration of international schools in Abu Dhabi, and most families here have a short school run. A day ending around 3.15pm commonly puts a student home before four.

That makes a genuine afternoon slot available — 4.30pm or 5pm with a student who is still functioning — which is not true of families commuting from the islands or across the city. For a Diploma student this matters more than it sounds, because late sessions compete with homework volumes that are already heavy in DP2, and a 7pm start on top of three hours of coursework is a session about exhaustion.

The families here who do have a long run are those who chose a school on Yas, Saadiyat or in the city for a specific programme rather than for proximity. For them the honest answer is an evening slot, planned for a realistic arrival time rather than an optimistic one, and often shorter and more frequent rather than long and weekly.

An in-home tutor would be drawing from the same corridor, which makes the travel argument weaker here than elsewhere — and the calendar argument stronger. The reason not to use a visiting tutor in Shakhbout City is not the distance; it is that a driving route cannot double its frequency for the three weeks when three deadlines collide, which is precisely when a Diploma family needs it to.

What a tutor may and may not do with an IA, EE or TOK essay

  • Allowed: teaching content, explaining criteria, questioning a draft, teaching citation
  • Allowed: interrogating whether a research question is answerable at the word count
  • Not allowed: writing, drafting, rewriting or editing assessed work to completion
  • Not allowed: supplying research questions, data, or a model of the live task

Given that this entire page is about deadlines on assessed work, the boundary needs stating precisely. It is set by IB academic-honesty rules, the student signs an authenticity declaration, and a breach is an expulsion-level risk for them rather than a reprimand for us. So the line is not a policy preference; it is the only version of this service that is safe for your child.

A tutor may teach the subject content the task rests on. Explain what each criterion rewards and in what proportion. Question a method until the student notices its weakness themselves. Read a draft the student wrote and name which criterion it is underselling and why. Teach referencing, citation and how to describe a method so another person could repeat it. Run a timed practice task on a different topic entirely. Interrogate whether a research question is answerable in the word count.

A tutor may not write any part of the work, draft a paragraph for the student to adapt, edit a draft to completion, rewrite sentences so the final text is partly theirs, generate a research question and hand it over, supply data the student did not gather, or provide a worked model of the actual task. An operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at a published price; that is an academic-integrity breach and an IB malpractice trigger, and it is not a service we offer at any fee.

One related boundary parents ask about. We do not reproduce or supply IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or subject guides as downloads — we reference them and link the official source. And we do not describe tutors as IB examiners where current examiner status cannot be evidenced, nor use examiner status to imply access to marking or boundaries.

08

What it costs, priced by term rather than by hour

Hourly rates are the wrong unit for a calendar-driven decision. A Diploma family does not need a constant number of hours; they need more in the fortnight where three deadlines collide and fewer in the quiet stretches. So the useful way to price this is per term, with a plan behind it.

The published market bands, read in October 2026, are these. Budget online tutoring at AED 45 to 150 an hour. A qualified subject tutor online at AED 150 to 300. An in-home one-to-one visit at AED 180 to 500 with the journey inside the fee. A named IB or A-Level specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above. Premium examiner-led provision reaching AED 650. Monthly, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates give AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support.

Mapped onto a Diploma calendar that becomes manageable. A deadline block of three to six sessions is a one-off cost in the term it falls. Weekly teaching in one subject across a term sits in the mid-range monthly band. A pre-mock or pre-session intensive sits in the specialist exam-year band for a few weeks only. The error is to buy the exam-year intensity for two years, which exhausts both the budget and the student.

IB Gram publishes no hourly price on this page. There is a free trial lesson and a consultation, and the figure follows once the subject, level and calendar are known. The figures above are the market's, included so you can price any quote you receive against them, including ours.

Where we tutor

Shakhbout City and the communities around it

Because lessons are online, the same specialist is available to a Shakhbout City family and to a family in the next community over. These are the neighbourhoods around it.

Shakhbout City

A mainland villa community in the Khalifa City corridor, built as family housing with compound streets rather than towers. Most children attend schools in the surrounding corridor and the day ends with a short school run rather than a cross-city one.

Khalifa City

Immediately adjacent and home to the emirate's densest concentration of international schools. The default enrolment choice for Shakhbout City families and the shortest journey available.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

The dense mainland grid on the other side, with the broadest curriculum mix in the emirate including Indian and Arab curriculum schools. A wider field at a slightly longer distance.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa community with international schools adjacent, including IB provision. Reachable from Shakhbout City and a common choice for families wanting a Diploma pathway nearby.

Al Raha Beach

Waterfront apartments and townhouses along the airport road. Often considered alongside Shakhbout City by families weighing villa space against proximity to the city.

Al Reef

Affordable villas and apartments near the airport, popular with teaching staff. Relevant because a meaningful part of the emirate's resident tutor supply lives here.

Yas Island

Newer British-curriculum schools north of the airport road. A real commute from Shakhbout City, which pushes any afternoon session into the evening.

Masdar City

The research and clean-technology district by the airport, with no school inside it. Its families commute into the same corridor Shakhbout City children already live in.

Saadiyat Island

Cultural district with a small number of well-known international schools running IB and British pathways. The longest school run a Shakhbout City family would normally consider.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Shakhbout City

Khalifa City and Shakhbout City

The immediate school belt, with both British and IB pathways represented and journeys short enough that an afternoon session is realistic. This proximity is the main practical advantage of living in this corridor during a Diploma year.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get every internal deadline from the school

All six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, in date order on one sheet. Ask the IB coordinator in September of DP1. It is free, it takes one meeting, and it prevents the collision that causes most Diploma crises.

  2. 02

    Name the next immovable date

Not the one that feels most urgent — the one somebody other than your child controls. That date, and what it requires already finished, is the brief for any tutoring we would propose.

  3. 03

Send the work in front of that date

The draft, the marked script, the proposal. We match a specialist to the named course and level, and say plainly if coverage for that subject is thin before you pay for anything.

  4. 04

Take the free trial on that work

A real lesson against the actual deliverable, not an introduction. At the end you should know what the next two weeks contain. If the hour produced general advice rather than a plan, change the tutor.

  5. 05

Flex the frequency with the calendar

Double for three weeks around a collision, return to weekly afterwards, pause across mock and exam weeks, shift post-Iftar during Ramadan. The slot is held rather than reassigned, which is only possible because nobody is driving.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Planned from your school's deadlines

The internal calendar for six subjects plus the core is what governs a Diploma term, not the examination window. We plan backwards from those dates, which is why the first conversation is about a sheet of paper rather than a chapter.

Frequency that moves with the calendar

A slot can double for three weeks around a collision and return to normal, because no tutor is driving a route. That flexibility is the one thing an in-home arrangement in this corridor genuinely cannot match.

No IB dates published, on purpose

The IB sets and revises its dates and our sources could not be verified directly, so we point you to your school's IB coordinator instead. A tutoring page quoting you an IB date is handing you a liability.

Ramadan and travel built into the plan

Sessions move post-Iftar and the slot is held; a family travelling for three weeks keeps the same tutor on a shifted clock. In a Diploma year that is the difference between losing a unit and losing nothing.

A stated boundary on assessed work

Teaching, questioning and feedback on the student's own drafts. No writing, no editing to completion, no supplied research questions or data, and no completed Internal Assessments at any price. The student signs the declaration.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Shakhbout City: your questions answered

We have an IA deadline in three weeks. Is it too late to get help in Shakhbout City?+

No, but the work changes shape. Three weeks before a submission the job is not to improve the mathematics or the method; it is to make the existing draft score what it is capable of scoring against the criteria. That means a criterion-by-criterion read of the student's own draft, naming what each section is underselling, and two or three focused revisions the student writes. What cannot be fixed in three weeks is a topic that was never viable, which is why topic interrogation is the cheapest session in the whole Diploma.

Which deadlines actually matter most in a Diploma year?+

The ones somebody other than your child controls. School-set Internal Assessment submissions, the Extended Essay's staged deadlines, the Theory of Knowledge exhibition and essay, a fixed Individual Oral recording window, mock dates and school-scheduled laboratory access. Against those, any self-imposed revision intention has no date and will lose every collision. List the immovable dates across all six subjects plus the core, work out what each needs already finished, and most Diploma crises turn out to have been visible two months earlier.

Why do you not publish the IB exam and results dates on this page?+

Because the IB sets them, revises them periodically, and our sources for them could not be verified directly against the IB itself. A date a parent acts on has to be right, and the only version worth acting on is the one your school's IB coordinator holds. What we will say is that Abu Dhabi schools enter the May session. Treat any tutoring page that quotes you a specific IB exam or results date with caution, because it is offering you a liability rather than a service.

How many school-set deadlines does a Diploma student actually have?+

More than twenty across the two years, and that is the number families find surprising. Six Internal Assessments, each with at least a proposal, a draft and a final submission. An Extended Essay with staged submissions and supervisor meetings. A Theory of Knowledge exhibition and essay, each with drafts. They are set independently by different departments, none of whom are coordinating around your child's particular six-subject combination, which is why collisions happen and why collecting the dates in September is the single highest-value free action available.

What is the one free thing a Shakhbout City Diploma family should do first?+

Collect every internal deadline from the school in September of DP1 and put them on one sheet in date order. Then look for the fortnight with three deliverables in it, because there is always at least one. Knowing in September means the Economics commentary gets written in October rather than compromised in February. Discovering it in the week itself means three compromised pieces of work. This costs nothing, takes one meeting with the IB coordinator, and prevents more damage than any amount of tutoring bought later.

How should we plan around Ramadan in a Diploma year?+

Treat it as a lower-intensity period and load the weeks either side, rather than running a normal schedule through it. School days shorten, routines shift later, and students concentrate better after Iftar than in a compressed afternoon. Sessions move to post-Iftar timing and the slot is held rather than reassigned. What fails is pretending the month is ordinary: full session loads, unchanged homework expectations and a mock series immediately afterwards with no adjustment. Plan the month in advance and it costs nothing academically.

What should a Diploma student do over the mid-year and summer breaks?+

The work that needs continuity, because those are the only uninterrupted stretches in two years. Extended Essay drafting is the obvious one: a student who arrives in DP2 with a draft written over the summer is in a materially different position from one who does not. Data collection for a Mathematics exploration or a science investigation also suits a break, since it needs time rather than teaching. What does not suit a break is content revision, which is better done in term when the teaching is live alongside it.

Are mock results worth worrying about?+

Not as a prediction, and enormously as data. A mock grade is one data point from one day under unfamiliar conditions, often on partially taught content, marked against internally set boundaries. The marked script, though, shows exactly how your child behaves under timing: which question they abandoned, where the minutes ran out, whether the losses are knowledge, method presentation, command-term misreading or time management. Those are four different problems with four different fixes, invisible in the grade and obvious in the script. Most families file the script and keep the anxiety.

Should we book weekly sessions straight through mock season?+

No. The fortnight either side of mocks is swallowed by them, and a student sitting six papers has no capacity to absorb new content in that window. Anything booked there should be either mock preparation — a timed paper and its review — or script review afterwards. Ordinary weekly teaching through mock season is hours paid for and not used. The high-value booking is one or two sessions in the week after results come back, spent working through the scripts and sorting every lost mark into a category.

Will an IB tutor come to a villa in Shakhbout City?+

Not one of ours. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time. In this corridor the reason is not distance — a visiting tutor would come from the same school belt — it is the calendar. A driving route cannot double its frequency for the three weeks when three deadlines collide, and that is exactly the week a Diploma family needs it to.

Can the frequency change during the year rather than staying fixed?+

That is the point of planning by calendar. A slot can double for three weeks around a deadline collision and return to weekly afterwards, pause across mock and examination weeks without being reassigned, shift post-Iftar through Ramadan, and follow a family travelling for a fortnight. None of that is possible when a tutor's week is built around a driving route through the city, which is why an in-home arrangement tends to deliver help in the quiet weeks and nothing in the busy ones.

How far can a tutor go in helping with an Extended Essay?+

A tutor may interrogate whether the research question is answerable in 4,000 words, explain what the assessment criteria reward, teach the subject content the essay rests on, read a draft the student wrote and name which criterion it undersells, and teach referencing and citation properly. A tutor may not generate the research question and hand it over, write or redraft any part of the text, edit to completion, or supply sources the student has not read. The student signs an authenticity declaration, and under IB rules a breach is an expulsion-level risk for them.

What does Diploma support cost across a term in Shakhbout City?+

Price it per term rather than per hour. Published market figures read in October 2026 put a qualified subject tutor online at AED 150 to 300 an hour and a named IB specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above, with Bestimate's 2026 estimates giving AED 600 to 1,200 a month for mid-range weekly sessions and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. A deadline block of three to six sessions is a one-off in the term it falls. The error is buying exam-year intensity for two full years.

When is the cheap window to buy Diploma help?+

Any eight-week stretch with no immovable date in it, which in most schools means the autumn term of DP1. That is when habits can be changed rather than patched: working presentation, how to read a command term, how to write a method somebody else could repeat, how to choose a topic that will carry the work. Nobody buys then because nothing has gone wrong, and it is the period where the same money does the most. By the final term the only purchase available is damage limitation at exam-year rates.

What do you need from a Shakhbout City family before the first lesson?+

The named course and level, the school, the next immovable deadline, and the actual piece of work in front of it — a draft, a proposal, a marked script. Plus the time your child is home, which in this corridor is usually before four and occasionally much later if you chose a school on the islands. With that, the trial hour works on the real deliverable, and at the end you should know what the next two weeks contain rather than having heard a description of the Diploma.

A calendar, not a brochure

Diploma terms in Shakhbout City rarely go wrong because of weak teaching. They go wrong because six internal calendars collide in one fortnight nobody mapped in September. Get every deadline from your IB coordinator, put them on one sheet, find the collision, and aim help at the deliverable that cannot move. We teach Shakhbout City students live over one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time, flex the frequency with the calendar, publish no IB dates we cannot verify, and run no home visits anywhere in the UAE.
