IGCSE Maths Tutor in Shakhbout City

The useful question for an IGCSE maths tutor in Shakhbout City is not who is available but how many weeks are left. Eight weeks before a paper buys something quite different from eight months, and spending the same money at the wrong distance from the exam is the most common way families here waste it. This page is a countdown: what belongs at each stage, where Ramadan and mocks sit, and what live one-to-one online lessons should cover in each window.

  • Work matched to the weeks remaining, not sold as a standing hour
  • A session that can double for three weeks and then step back
  • Board and tier specific: Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1
  • Live one-to-one video — IB Gram runs no UAE home visits

IB & IGCSE in Shakhbout City

Count the weeks before you count the money

Shakhbout City is a mainland villa community in the Khalifa City corridor, built as family housing, with most children attending one of the international schools a short drive away in that corridor. The school runs are short, the evenings are quiet, and a maths session at half past four is genuinely possible — which makes this one of the easier places in Abu Dhabi to run a consistent weekly arrangement.

Which is exactly why the mistake here is a calendar mistake rather than a logistics one. Families in this corridor can book a standing hour without difficulty, so they do, and the hour then finds its own content. Across a Year 11 that produces a lot of homework supervision at a specialist's rate and not much movement, because the work was never matched to how far away the paper was.

The distance from the exam changes what a maths hour can achieve, completely. Nine months out, an hour can rebuild algebraic fluency, which is slow work that pays everywhere. Three months out, an hour can install paper technique and calculator discipline. Four weeks out, an hour can only drill a repeating error found on a real script. Try to rebuild algebra four weeks out and you spend specialist money on something that will not land in time.

So this page is written as a countdown rather than as a prospectus. What eight weeks can achieve. What belongs at each distance from the paper. Where mock season sits and why a marked mock is worth more than the grade attached to it. How Ramadan reshapes a revision term in this country. And what the tier decision's own deadline does to the Year 10 calendar.

The exam facts you can plan against are these. Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and the February and March series is offered to India only — not available to a candidate sitting in Abu Dhabi. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Pearson's published history shows a November window from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reaching students on 20 August 2026 and November 2025 results on 22 January 2026, which tells you the shape of the wait at each end.

On delivery, plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. In-home tutoring is a service we run in India only, and no tutor will travel to a Shakhbout City address. Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time. The calendar reason that matters is frequency: an online slot can double for three weeks around a mock or a deadline and step back afterwards, which a tutor driving a fixed route through the corridor cannot do.

What follows is the countdown in full, with the AED cost of each window attached so you can place the spending as well as the work.

At a glance

  • What a maths hour can achieve depends on the weeks remaining
  • Cambridge sits June and November; its February and March series is India-only
  • Pearson sits May/June and November; results follow in August or January
  • New content stops paying about four weeks before a paper
  • Ramadan shifts the revision term and sessions move post-Iftar
  • IB Gram teaches Shakhbout City students online only, one tutor to one student

Before the countdown, the qualification — because the series, the papers and the tier all depend on which board your child is entered with.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

Cambridge syllabus 0580: number, algebra, coordinate geometry, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, vectors and transformations, probability and statistics. Tiered into Core, with a reduced syllabus and capped grade range, and Extended, with the full content and full range. Both non-calculator and calculator components feature in the assessment.

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series. The February and March series is offered to India only and is not available to an Abu Dhabi candidate. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for your zone, and says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Confirm the paper pattern for your child's exam year through the school.

4MA1Ages 14–16 · Years 10–11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Pearson code 4MA1, tiered as Foundation and Higher. Content overlaps substantially with Cambridge 0580 while the papers, command terms, mark schemes and calculator policy differ, so a revision plan built for one board does not transfer to the other in detail.

Available in May/June and November. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series and revises them, so the live official timetable is the only one to plan against.

Additional and further maths options

Material overlapping early AS content — advanced algebra, series, trigonometric identities and calculus foundations — entered alongside the main IGCSE by schools with a strong cohort. A bridge into sixth-form maths rather than a separate qualification track.

Calendar-wise this is a Year 11 addition that competes for revision time with the main syllabus, which is the thing to weigh. For a student already secure in 0580 Extended or 4MA1 Higher it is a few sessions on genuinely new material. For a student still shaky on the main syllabus it is a distraction with a deadline attached.

What the grade opens, and when that is decided

The IGCSE maths grade gates the sixth-form choice more tightly than any other subject, with A Level Mathematics and IB Higher Level maths courses normally requiring an Extended or Higher tier grade at a reasonable level and each school setting its own threshold.

The calendar point is that sixth-form applications in this corridor are often made before the results arrive, on predicted grades. So the grade that opens the door is sometimes a prediction made in the autumn of Year 11, which moves the real deadline forward by months. Ask the receiving sixth form when they decide and on what evidence.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the parts of IGCSE maths a countdown has to prioritise, with how long each one takes to fix. Time remaining decides the order.

Working presentation for the mark scheme

Both boards, both tiers

Writing the steps a marker needs. Takes about three weeks of insistence, pays everywhere, and shows on the next paper. The first thing to fix at any distance from the exam, including four weeks out.

Calculator technique

Both boards, both tiers

Modes, fraction and surd entry, statistical functions, and recording enough that a correct display earns full credit. One or two sessions. The highest return per hour at any point in the countdown.

Algebraic manipulation

Core and Extended; Foundation and Higher

Expanding, factorising, rearranging, solving. Slow fluency work that pays across every multi-step question. Needs months of short frequent practice, so it belongs early and is close to unfixable four weeks out.

Trigonometry and bearings

Mainly Extended and Higher

Right-angled and non-right-angled triangles, sine and cosine rules, bearings and 3D work. Mostly a diagram habit rather than knowledge, which makes it fixable in a handful of sessions even late.

Geometry and mensuration

Core and Extended

Angle reasoning, circle theorems, compound-shape surface area and volume. Circle theorems are learnable in two or three sessions; compound shapes are a working-presentation problem in disguise.

Probability and statistics

Core and Extended

Averages from tables, cumulative frequency, histograms, tree diagrams, conditional probability. Self-contained topics with reliable marks, which makes them the best late-stage purchase in the syllabus.

Graphs and functions

Core and Extended

Straight lines, quadratics, reciprocal and exponential curves, transformations, function notation at the higher tiers. Marks go on reading values without showing the construction lines a marker expects.

Vectors and transformations

Mainly Extended and Higher

Column vectors, vector geometry, translations, rotations, reflections, enlargements with negative scale factors. Small, dependable and quick to teach — another good late-stage target.

Non-calculator arithmetic

Where a non-calculator paper is sat

Fractions, percentages, ratio, standard form, bounds, estimation. Needs a few weeks of practice with the machine deliberately off the desk, so plan it at least two months out.

Multi-step problem solving

Extended and Higher especially

Questions combining topics with no signposting, which separate the top grades. The skill is planning the route before calculating, and it takes a term to build rather than a fortnight.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of work, each belonging at a different distance from the paper. All delivered live over video to Shakhbout City.

Early fluency work, six months or more out

Short, frequent sessions on algebraic manipulation and non-calculator arithmetic, which are fluency rather than knowledge and respond to little and often. Dull to buy and the only window in which they can be fixed properly.

  • Shorter sessions, more of them
  • Algebra and arithmetic, deliberately slow
  • Belongs in Year 10 or early Year 11

Technique work, two to three months out

Working presentation, calculator discipline, formula handling and paper timing, built from marked scripts. The highest-return window in the whole countdown, and the one families skip in favour of topic revision the school is already doing.

  • Starts from a marked paper, not the textbook
  • Targets habits, which pay across every topic
  • Two or three sessions can show on the next mock

Error drilling, the final four weeks

Timed papers and the repeating errors they expose, and nothing else. No new content, because content learned in the last month rarely survives the paper. Frequency can double here and then stop with the series.

  • Complete papers under exam timing
  • Only the errors that recur across scripts
  • Ends with the series rather than rolling on

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Shakhbout City

01

What eight weeks can actually achieve in IGCSE maths

  • Eight weeks buys two self-contained topics plus two habit fixes
  • It does not buy algebraic fluency or whole-syllabus coverage
  • Choose the topics from a marked script, not from a feeling
  • Start and finish the block with a full paper under timing

Answer first, because this is the question most Shakhbout City families arrive with. Eight weeks of weekly one-to-one maths is enough to fix how working is presented, install calculator discipline, and close two self-contained topics properly. It is not enough to rebuild algebraic fluency, and it is not enough to cover a syllabus the student has not learned.

That sounds limiting and it is actually freeing, because it tells you exactly what to buy. Two topics, chosen from a marked script rather than from a feeling, plus the two habit fixes that pay across every question. A tutor who agrees to "go through the syllabus" in eight weeks is agreeing to something that cannot work, and the student will finish the block having seen everything once and secured nothing.

Choosing the two topics well is most of the value. The best late-stage targets are self-contained and reliably examined: histograms with unequal class widths, conditional probability from tree diagrams, circle theorems, vectors, transformations with negative scale factors, bearings. Each is learnable in two or three sessions and each appears every series. The worst late-stage targets are the ones that sit underneath everything — algebraic manipulation and multi-step problem solving — because they are fluency and fluency takes months.

So an eight-week block looks like this: week one, a full paper under timing and a diagnosis. Weeks two and three, working presentation and calculator discipline. Weeks four to seven, the two chosen topics, each ending in a timed question set. Week eight, another full paper to check. That is a defined purchase with a testable outcome, and it costs less than the open-ended version that achieves less.

02

What belongs at each distance from the paper

The same money buys different things at different distances from the exam, and matching them is the whole discipline. Nine months out, the right purchase is fluency: algebraic manipulation and non-calculator arithmetic, taught in short frequent sessions, because fluency cannot be installed quickly and pays into every question thereafter. Almost nobody buys at this distance, because nothing has gone wrong yet.

Six months out, the right purchase is content gaps found from a real paper rather than guessed at, plus the start of paper technique. Three months out, it is technique proper: working presentation, calculator discipline, formula-booklet familiarity and timing, all built from marked scripts. This is the highest-return window in the countdown and the one most families spend on topic revision instead, duplicating what the school is already doing.

Four weeks out, the window closes on new content. What remains is timed papers and the drilling of repeating errors, and any hour spent teaching something unfamiliar is an hour spent on material unlikely to survive the paper. Two weeks out the only useful activities are a paper, its review, and sleep.

Afterwards there is a window families forget. Results arrive — roughly eight to nine weeks after a summer series, and the following January after a November one, judging by Pearson's published history of June 2026 results reaching students on 20 August 2026 and November 2025 results on 22 January 2026. If a grade falls short of a sixth-form threshold, the resit decision belongs in that window, and the first action is free: ask the receiving sixth form whether they will accept the original grade.

03

Mock season in maths, specifically

Mocks generate more worry per unit of information than anything else in Year 11, and in maths the information available is unusually rich. A maths script is a page-by-page record of decisions: which question was abandoned, where the minutes went, whether a sign was lost early and propagated, whether the calculator was in the wrong mode for a whole section.

Sorted properly, every lost mark on a maths mock falls into one of four categories, and they need four different responses. Knowledge: the student did not know the method. Method presentation: they knew it and did not write enough to be credited. Misreading: they answered a different question from the one asked. Timing: they ran out of minutes before reaching marks they could have had. A grade shows none of this. A script shows all of it in twenty minutes.

The categories matter because the proportions are usually surprising. A student described as weak at maths often turns out to be losing more marks to timing and presentation than to knowledge, which means the fix is cheap and fast rather than a term of re-teaching. Equally, a student losing most marks to genuine knowledge gaps in two topics has a clear and narrow brief.

Practically: book one session in the week after mock scripts come back, spend it sorting the marks, and let the result set the plan for the remaining months. Do not book ordinary weekly sessions through the mock fortnight itself, because a student sitting several papers has no capacity to absorb anything new, and those hours are paid for and unused.

Ramadan, breaks and the shape of a UAE revision term

A revision plan written on a European template fails in a predictable place here. Ramadan falls inside the UAE school year, school days shorten, family routines change substantially, and the hours when a teenager concentrates move later. None of that is a problem if it is planned for, and all of it is a problem if it is discovered in week one of the month.

What works in practice is treating the month as a lower-intensity period and loading the weeks either side. Sessions commonly move to post-Iftar timing and the slot is held rather than reassigned, and students are often sharper then than in a compressed school afternoon. What does not work is running the full load unchanged, keeping homework expectations identical, and scheduling a mock immediately afterwards with no adjustment.

The breaks are the opposite case: the only uninterrupted stretches in the year, and therefore the natural home for the slow work. Algebraic fluency responds to daily short practice far better than to weekly hours, and a mid-year break is the one time that is possible. A student who spends twenty minutes a day on algebra across a break arrives in the final term with something no amount of late tutoring could have bought.

Travel is the other local variable. Families in this corridor travel, sometimes for weeks, and an in-home arrangement stops when they do. An online slot follows the family on a shifted clock, which in a Year 11 means a three-week absence need not cost a topic.

05

The tier decision has a deadline too

  • The tier entry is decided in Year 10 and sets the grade ceiling
  • Four to six Year 10 sessions on tier-separating content is the cheapest insurance
  • Sixth-form decisions often rest on autumn predictions, not results
  • Ask the department what would change the tier decision — the answer is a free brief

The entry tier is the one maths deadline families do not realise they are inside. It is decided during Year 10 by the department, usually on the basis of internal assessment, and once the entry is made the grade ceiling is set. A Core or Foundation entry caps the available grade; an Extended or Higher entry opens it and places harder algebra, trigonometry and multi-step problem solving in front of a student who may not be ready.

The downstream cost lands in Year 12. A Level Mathematics and IB Higher Level maths courses normally require an Extended or Higher tier grade at a reasonable level, with each sixth form setting its own threshold. Several schools across this corridor run both pathways, so the fork is real rather than theoretical, and reopening a closed door means a resit series and another year's planning.

Calendar-wise that pushes the highest-value maths spending into Year 10, which is counter-intuitive because nothing has gone wrong then. Four to six sessions aimed squarely at the content separating the tiers, placed before the entry is fixed, is a small defined cost protecting a large one. The same money in Year 11 buys general revision beneath a ceiling that is already set.

There is a second, earlier deadline worth knowing about in this corridor. Sixth-form applications are often made on predicted grades in the autumn of Year 11, before any real result exists. So the grade that opens the door can be a prediction, which moves the effective deadline months forward. Ask the receiving sixth form when they decide and on what evidence — the answer is free and occasionally changes the whole plan.

06

What to fix first when the weeks are short

When time is the binding constraint, the order matters more than the content. The priority is not the hardest topic or the one the student dislikes most; it is the one with the best ratio of marks recovered to weeks required. That ranking is stable across both boards and both tiers, and it is almost the reverse of what families choose on instinct.

First, working presentation, because it recovers marks the student has already earned and takes three weeks. Second, calculator discipline, one or two sessions for marks lost to modes and unrecorded commands. Third, the self-contained topics that appear every series and are quick to teach: histograms with unequal class widths, conditional probability, circle theorems, vectors, transformations, bearings. Fourth, timing strategy across a whole paper.

Last — and only if months rather than weeks remain — algebraic manipulation and multi-step problem solving. They are the highest-value things in the syllabus and the slowest to build, which makes them an early-year purchase and a poor late one. A family that funds algebra four weeks before a paper has bought the right thing at the wrong time.

The instinct families follow instead is to start with the topic the student finds hardest, which is usually algebra, and to leave presentation and calculator work as too trivial to pay for. That ordering reliably produces a block of sessions that feels serious and moves nothing before the paper.

There is a useful test if you are unsure. Ask what the student would gain if this item were perfect tomorrow, and how many weeks it would take to get there. Presentation scores high on the first and low on the second, which is why it goes first. Multi-step problem solving scores high on both, which is why it is a Year 10 project and not a March one.

What each window costs in AED

A Shakhbout City family buying IGCSE maths is buying into a market with published prices, read in October 2026, and these are its lines. The cheapest route is budget online tutoring at AED 45 to 150 an hour. A qualified subject tutor working online runs AED 150 to 300. A named IGCSE or A-Level specialist occupies AED 200 to 450 and above, and premium examiner-led provision reaches AED 650. The outlier is the in-home one-to-one visit at AED 180 to 500, where the journey sits inside the fee rather than beside it, so a tutor driving out past the villa blocks is charging for the drive whether the hour goes on quadratics or on vectors. Notice the overlap while you are reading: the bottom of the specialist band sits well inside the ordinary qualified-tutor band, which tells you the word specialist is not by itself the thing you are paying for.

Monthly, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for weekly one-hour sessions come out at AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. Package rates in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Mapped onto the countdown, the spending shape should be uneven rather than flat. Early-year fluency work is cheap per session and wants frequency, so it sits in the mid-range monthly band for a term. Technique work three months out is a short block. The final four weeks is the only period that justifies the exam-year intensity, and it should stop with the series. A family paying exam-year rates for the whole of Year 11 has spent a great deal to arrive at the same place.

IB Gram publishes no hourly price on this page. There is a free trial lesson and a consultation, and the number follows once the board, tier and remaining weeks are known. The figures above are the market's, included so you can price any quote against them.

Why a slot that can double matters, and what a tutor may not do

  • No UAE home visits — in-home tutoring is an India-only service
  • A countdown needs uneven frequency, which a driving route cannot provide
  • A camera on the paper is the one technical requirement for maths
  • Papers and mark schemes are linked to their source, never redistributed

Stated plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. No tutor will travel to a Shakhbout City address. In-home tutoring is a service we run in India only. Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time.

The calendar reason this matters here is frequency rather than distance, since an in-home tutor in this corridor would only be driving ten to twenty-five minutes. A countdown needs an uneven load: weekly for a term, twice weekly for the three weeks after mocks, nothing through the mock fortnight itself, post-Iftar during Ramadan, three a week in the final month, then stop. A tutor whose week is built around a driving route cannot reshape itself like that, because the route is the business.

For maths over video there is one requirement worth setting up in session one: the tutor must see handwritten working as it happens, through a camera angled at paper or a tablet and stylus. With that in place a shared whiteboard retains every worked line, the exact past-paper question is pasted onto the board, and the student writes on their own paper in their own hand, which is what the exam will ask of them.

On assessed work, the boundary. A tutor may teach content, explain what the mark scheme rewards, question a method until the student finds its weakness, read work the student wrote and name what undersells it, and teach honest method description. A tutor may not write, draft, rewrite or complete assessed work, produce a model answer to the live task, or supply data the student did not collect. We also link board papers and mark schemes to their official source rather than redistributing copyrighted material, and IB Gram holds no regulator approval, accreditation or partnership and runs no UAE office.

Where we tutor

Shakhbout City and the corridor around it

Short school runs are the operational advantage of this corridor. Because lessons are online, where you live changes the slot rather than the tutor.

Shakhbout City

Mainland villa community in the Khalifa City corridor, built as family housing. School runs of ten to fifteen minutes make a consistent weekly afternoon slot realistic across a whole Year 11.

Khalifa City

Immediately adjacent, with the emirate's densest concentration of international schools. The shortest journey available and the default enrolment choice from Shakhbout City.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

The dense mainland grid on the other side, with the broadest curriculum mix in the emirate. Fifteen to twenty-five minutes, so still an afternoon session rather than an evening one.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa community with international schools adjacent. Comparable housing and a similarly short run, which keeps the same slot options open.

Al Raha Beach

Waterfront apartments and townhouses along the airport road, with the Al Raha schools nearby. Twenty to thirty minutes, with airport-road traffic supplying the variance.

Al Reef

Affordable villas and apartments near the airport, popular with teaching staff and part of the same tutor supply as Shakhbout City.

Masdar City

The research district by the airport with no school inside it. Its families commute into this corridor and compete for the same second-term slots.

Yas Island

Newer British-curriculum schools north of the airport road. A chosen commute from this corridor that moves any maths session into the evening.

Saadiyat Island

Cultural district with a few well-known international schools. The longest run a family here would normally accept, and an evening-only tutoring proposition.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say how many weeks are left

The series your child is entered for and the date of the next real assessment. That number, more than anything else, determines what the hours should contain and whether they are worth buying at all.

  2. 02

Get the code and the tier

Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1, Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher. One email to the school, no cost. Without it, any plan is built for the wrong papers and the wrong mark scheme.

  3. 03

Sit a full paper under timing

Before any paid session. It is free, more diagnostic than a conversation, and it produces the script the whole plan is built from. Mark it honestly against the real mark scheme rather than generously.

  4. 04

Sort the script, then choose the block

Every lost mark into knowledge, presentation, misreading or timing. The proportions decide the priority order and usually surprise the family. Then a defined block sized to the weeks remaining, with a paper at each end.

    Flex the frequency, then stop

Weekly for a term, doubled for three weeks where the calendar demands it, paused through mock fortnights, post-Iftar during Ramadan, and finished with the series rather than rolling on by default.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Work matched to the weeks remaining

Nine months out buys fluency; four weeks out buys error drilling. Spending the same money at the wrong distance from the paper is the commonest waste in this market, and the easiest to avoid.

A plan built from a sorted script

Every lost mark on a mock goes into knowledge, presentation, misreading or timing, and the proportions set the priority. Families routinely discover the problem is timing and presentation rather than mathematics.

Uneven frequency by design

A session can double for three weeks and step back, pause through a mock fortnight, and shift post-Iftar. That is only possible because no tutor is driving a fixed route through the corridor.

The dull high-return work first

Working presentation and calculator discipline come before topic teaching, because they recover marks the student already earned. Nobody advertises them because they do not sound like teaching.

Board-correct exam facts

Cambridge sits June and November and its February and March series is India-only; Pearson sits May/June and November. We state the series correctly and point to the live official timetable rather than restating dates.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Shakhbout City: your questions answered

We have eight weeks before the maths paper. What can that realistically do?+

It will fix how working is presented, install calculator discipline, and close two self-contained topics properly. It will not rebuild algebraic fluency and it will not cover a syllabus the student has not learned. The shape that works: week one a full paper under timing and a diagnosis, weeks two and three presentation and calculator work, weeks four to seven two chosen topics each ending in a timed set, week eight another full paper. A tutor who agrees to cover the syllabus in eight weeks is agreeing to something that cannot work.

Which maths topics are the best late-stage targets?+

Self-contained ones that appear every series and teach quickly: histograms with unequal class widths, conditional probability from tree diagrams, circle theorems, vectors, transformations with negative scale factors, and bearings. Each is two or three sessions and each is reliably examined. The worst late targets are algebraic manipulation and multi-step problem solving, because they sit underneath everything and are fluency rather than knowledge, which takes months. Those are Year 10 purchases, and buying them four weeks out is the right thing at the wrong time.

What should we stop doing four weeks before the paper?+

Learning new content. Anything unfamiliar taught in the final month rarely survives contact with the paper, and the hour spent on it displaces something that would have paid. What remains useful is timed papers, the drilling of errors that recur across scripts, and rest. In the final fortnight the only sensible activities are one paper, its review and sleep. Families often increase intensity at exactly the point where intensity stops converting into marks, which is expensive and counterproductive.

How should we use a maths mock script rather than the grade?+

Sort every lost mark into four categories: knowledge, where the method was absent or wrong; method presentation, where the answer was right and the working too compressed to credit; misreading, where a different question was answered; and timing, where later marks were never reached. A grade shows none of this and a script shows all of it in twenty minutes. The proportions usually surprise families — a student called weak at maths frequently loses more to timing and presentation than to mathematics, which is a cheap fix.

Should we keep weekly sessions running through mock season?+

No. The fortnight either side of mocks is consumed by them, and a student sitting several papers has no capacity to absorb anything new, so those hours are paid for and unused. The valuable booking is one session in the week after the scripts come back, spent sorting every lost mark into categories and letting the result set the plan for the remaining months. Then resume the normal rhythm with a brief that is based on evidence rather than on what the family assumed in September.

How does Ramadan change a maths revision plan in Abu Dhabi?+

Treat the month as a lower-intensity period and load the weeks either side rather than running the usual schedule through it. School days shorten, routines move later, and students often concentrate better after Iftar than in a compressed afternoon, so sessions commonly shift to post-Iftar timing with the slot held rather than reassigned. What fails is keeping the full session load and homework expectations unchanged and then scheduling a mock immediately afterwards with no adjustment for the month that preceded it.

What is the best use of a mid-year break for IGCSE maths?+

Daily short algebra practice, mostly unsupervised. Algebraic fluency responds to twenty minutes a day far better than to a weekly hour, and a break is the only time in the year when daily practice is actually possible. A student who does that arrives in the final term with something no amount of late tutoring could buy. One or two check-in sessions across the break are enough to keep the practice honest and correct the errors creeping in, which is a very cheap way to spend a holiday.

When is the tier entry decided, and can we still influence it?+

During Year 10, by the department, usually on internal assessment evidence. Once the entry is made the grade ceiling is set: a Core or Foundation entry caps what is achievable, and A Level Mathematics or IB Higher Level maths normally require an Extended or Higher grade at a reasonable level. You can influence it before it is fixed. Ask the department which tier your child is provisionally entered for and what specifically would have to improve for the other tier to be viable — the second answer is a precise, free tutoring brief.

Which exam series will our child sit, and is a resit possible?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and the February and March series is offered to India only, so it is not available to an Abu Dhabi candidate. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. November is the resit route for both. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns it is essential to use the correct timetable for your zone. For any series, open the board's live official timetable rather than planning against a restated date.

How long after the paper do results arrive?+

Pearson's published history gives the pattern: June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, roughly eight to nine weeks after the summer window, while November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, about two months after that series. The November 2026 final timetable itself ran from late October to 19 November 2026. Those are backward-looking dates quoted so you can plan the wait. Future dates get revised, so check the live timetable before acting.

Is a November maths resit worth the time and money?+

Sometimes, and the first step costs nothing: ask the receiving sixth form whether they will accept the original grade. If a resit is needed, price three things — the entry fee from your centre, a short targeted block rather than a full re-teach since the content is already covered once, and the time cost of revising through the first sixth-form term. A November result reaches students the following January, which is useful for a conditional place and useless for an application already decided.

Why does the session frequency need to change during the year?+

Because a countdown is uneven. A term of weekly work on fluency, nothing through the mock fortnight, two a week for three weeks after the scripts come back, post-Iftar timing through Ramadan, three a week in the final month, then a stop at the series. A tutor whose week is built around a driving route through this corridor cannot reshape itself like that, so the help tends to be available in the quiet weeks and unavailable in the busy ones. Online, the slot flexes and is held rather than reassigned.

Will a maths tutor come to our house in Shakhbout City?+

Not one of ours. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time. In this corridor the argument is not distance, since a visiting tutor would drive only ten to twenty-five minutes. It is that a calendar-driven plan needs frequency that changes through the year, and a fixed route cannot deliver that. For maths the one requirement online is a camera angled at the student's paper.

Can a tutor produce or correct assessed coursework?+

No. A tutor may teach the content, explain what the mark scheme rewards, question a method until the student finds its weakness, read work the student wrote and name which part undersells it, and teach honest method description. A tutor may not write, draft, rewrite or complete assessed work, produce a model answer to the live task for adaptation, or supply data the student did not collect. We also link board papers and mark schemes to their official source rather than handing over copies of copyrighted material.

What is the single most useful free thing to do first?+

Have your child sit a full past paper from the correct board under exam timing, then mark it honestly against the real mark scheme rather than generously. That costs nothing, takes an afternoon, and produces the script every sensible plan is built from. It will also tell you whether paid help is needed at all: a script showing losses almost entirely to presentation and timing points to a two or three session fix rather than a term of hours, and you will know that before spending anything.

Count the weeks, then spend

An IGCSE maths tutor in Shakhbout City is worth exactly what the calendar allows. Nine months out, an hour can rebuild algebraic fluency. Three months out, it installs technique. Four weeks out, it can only drill errors a real script has already named. Have your child sit a paper under timing, sort every lost mark into knowledge, presentation, misreading or timing, and buy a block sized to the weeks remaining. We teach live one-to-one over video in Gulf Standard Time, flex the frequency with the calendar, and run no UAE home visits.
