IGCSE Private Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IGCSE private tutor in Abu Dhabi should be able to show you, on paper, what changed. Not a feeling about confidence, and not a report card adjective. A marked script, a mark-by-mark breakdown, a list of the command words your child misreads, and a record of which component the lost marks sat in. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so the tutor is chosen for the syllabus code your child is entered against rather than for the district they happen to live in.

  • Every lesson one-to-one over live video, Gulf Standard Time
  • Marked past-paper scripts returned with mark-by-mark annotation
  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel specifications named by syllabus code

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What you should be able to see after a month of private tuition

Most tutoring decisions in Abu Dhabi are made on very little information. A parent sees a Year 10 report with a working-at grade, hears from the student that the teacher 'goes too fast', and buys an hour a week. Three months later the next report arrives, the grade has not moved, and nobody can say why. The hour was not wasted, but nothing about it was measured, so there is no way to tell whether the problem was the content, the exam technique, the amount of independent practice, or the fact that the student was entered for the wrong tier.

This page is about the opposite approach. An IGCSE private tutor working with an Abu Dhabi family should produce a short, checkable trail: a diagnostic from a real past paper in the first session, an annotated script every two or three weeks, a running list of the specification points that are still weak, and a component-level record rather than a grade-level one. Grades move slowly and in big steps. Component marks move every fortnight, and they are the thing you can actually watch.

The reason this matters more at IGCSE than at almost any other stage is the number of subjects running at once. A Year 11 student in Abu Dhabi is typically entered for eight, nine or ten subjects across two boards, each with its own paper structure, its own mark tariffs and its own coursework or practical component. A single weekly hour spread thinly across all of them achieves nothing. The same hour aimed at the two subjects where the lost marks are concentrated, and aimed at the specific component inside those subjects, is a different purchase entirely.

Delivery is online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service offered only in India. That is a limitation worth stating in the first hundred words rather than the last, and it is also the reason the evidence trail is as detailed as it is. When nobody is sitting at the kitchen table, the record has to be good enough to replace watching. In practice it is better than watching, because a parent who sits in on a lesson learns how the tutor talks, while a parent who reads an annotated Paper 4 script learns where the marks went.

The second reason for online delivery is supply. Abu Dhabi has a deep pool of generalist tutors and a thin one for specific IGCSE components: Edexcel Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1, Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 paper 2 problem-solving, Arabic First Language 0508. Matching on the syllabus code rather than on driving distance is what makes those matches possible at all, and the rest of this page is about what you should ask for once the match is made.

At a glance

  • A diagnostic from a real past paper in session one, marked against the published scheme
  • An annotated script every two to three weeks, with the mark lost written beside each answer
  • A component-level tracker, not a single predicted grade
  • A written note of which specification points remain unsecured
  • A stated position on coursework: what the tutor may read, and what must be the student's own
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

IGCSE is not one qualification but a tiered family of them, sat across two boards and two exam series. These are the stages an Abu Dhabi private tutor is usually asked to work on, and the evidence each stage can realistically produce.

KS3Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9 and the options decision

The year before the IGCSE course begins, and the year in which the subject list and, in several subjects, the tier are chosen. Work at this stage is about closing arithmetic and literacy gaps that will otherwise cap the grade two years later, and about making an evidence-based options choice rather than one driven by which teacher the student liked.

Abu Dhabi British-curriculum schools run options evenings in the spring of Year 9, and the choice is made before any IGCSE paper has been sat. A private tutor's useful contribution here is a baseline: a Year 9 end-of-year paper marked honestly, so the Core-or-Extended conversation in Year 10 starts from a mark rather than a hope.

COREAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Core tier

The lower tier in Mathematics, the separate sciences and several languages. Core candidates sit a reduced content specification and a different pair of papers, and the grade available is capped - typically at C on the Cambridge letter scale. It is the correct entry for some students and a quiet ceiling for others.

Tier decisions in Abu Dhabi schools are usually made in Year 10 and reviewed once, in the autumn of Year 11, against mock performance. A tutor who can produce two marked Extended papers in October gives a head of department something concrete to review the entry against, which is far more persuasive than a parental request.

EXTAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Extended tier

The higher tier, with the full specification content and access to the top grades. Extended papers reward precision in a way Core papers do not: longer multi-step questions, more marks for method, and command words that demand explanation rather than recall. Most of the private tuition requested in Abu Dhabi sits here.

Extended entries dominate the British-curriculum cohort in Abu Dhabi, and the marginal student - the one entered for Extended and working at the bottom of the range - is the most common private tuition enquiry in the emirate. The evidence that matters for that student is the raw mark on a full paper, not the school's working-at grade.

POST16Ages 16-17 · Year 11 into Year 12

The sixth-form decision after IGCSE

IGCSE results decide the A Level or Diploma Programme subjects a student can take. Most Abu Dhabi sixth forms publish entry requirements by subject, and a student half a grade short in Mathematics is the single most common blocked route into A Level Physics or Economics.

Because the decision is made on predicted grades in the autumn and confirmed on results in August, the window for a private tutor to change the outcome is narrow and well defined. Work backwards from the sixth-form entry requirement your child's school publishes, and treat that mark as the target rather than a general improvement.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the IGCSE subjects Abu Dhabi families most often ask for by name, with the syllabus code that decides which papers are sat and where the marks are available. The code on the entry form matters more than the subject title.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580, Edexcel 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

The subject where tier and board choice have the largest effect on the grade available. Marks are lost on method rather than arithmetic: unsupported answers in multi-step questions, premature rounding, and bearings or transformations described without the required precision. Edexcel 4MA1 and Cambridge 0580 reward different habits, and a tutor should know which paper is in front of them.

Physics (Cambridge 0625, Edexcel 4PH1)

Core and Extended · Single tier at Edexcel

Electricity and waves are where Abu Dhabi students most often stall. The multiple-choice paper rewards fluency with units and prefixes; the theory paper rewards structured explanation. A fifth of the Cambridge mark sits in the practical or alternative-to-practical paper, which almost no classroom has time to rehearse properly.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620, Edexcel 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Moles, electrolysis and organic reaction pathways carry the heaviest mark loss. The pattern is consistent: students can recite a definition and cannot apply it to an unfamiliar substance. Practical paper marks depend on reading a method critically rather than on having stood at a bench.

Biology (Cambridge 0610, Edexcel 4BI1)

Core and Extended

The content is large and the marks are won on command-word discipline. 'Describe' and 'explain' questions on transport, homeostasis and inheritance are answered interchangeably by most candidates, which costs a mark a question across a whole paper.

First Language English (Cambridge 0500, Edexcel 4EA1)

Single tier

Two papers of equal weight: reading and directed writing. Reading marks are lost on the summary and the analysis question, where candidates narrate instead of selecting. Writing marks are lost on register and on the length of the response rather than on grammar.

English as a Second Language (Cambridge 0510 and 0511)

Core and Extended

A different qualification from First Language English, with a different ceiling and different value to a sixth form. Many Abu Dhabi students are entered for it who could sit 0500, and the entry is rarely revisited. Checking which code your child is on is a five-minute job with long consequences.

Business Studies and Economics (0450, 0455, 4BS1, 4EC1)

Single tier

Case-study papers where the difference between a grade 6 and a grade 8 is application to the stimulus rather than knowledge of the term. Evaluation marks - the final lines of the long questions - are the single largest unclaimed block in these papers.

Computer Science (Cambridge 0478)

Single tier

Paper 1 is theory and Paper 2 is algorithms and programming. Students who can code in a lesson often lose marks writing pseudocode under exam conditions, and trace tables are the most teachable mark gain in the whole specification.

Additional and Further Pure Mathematics (0606, 4PM1)

Single tier

Taken alongside the main Mathematics entry by students heading for A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics. The Abu Dhabi tutor pool for these codes is genuinely thin, which is the clearest case for matching online rather than locally.

Arabic (Cambridge 0508 First Language, 0544 Foreign Language)

Two separate specifications

Arabic sits alongside the international curriculum as a federally required subject, and the IGCSE entry a student takes depends on whether Arabic is a first or additional language. The two codes are not interchangeable and a wrong placement is visible in the first marked script.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways an Abu Dhabi family buys private IGCSE tuition. All three are delivered one-to-one over live video, and each produces a different kind of record.

Weekly one-to-one across Years 10 and 11

A single fixed hour a week in one subject, held for two academic years. The record builds slowly and is the most useful of the three: by the spring of Year 11 there is a folder of marked papers showing whether the gain came from content, technique or practice volume. This is the pattern that catches a wrong tier entry in time to change it.

  • One subject, one fixed slot, reviewed each half term
  • An annotated script roughly every third session
  • A component tracker carried forward across both years
  • Tier and board entry reviewed in the autumn of Year 11

Two-subject split through the exam year

Two hours a week aimed at the two subjects where the lost marks are concentrated. The diagnostic in the first week decides which two, and the decision is revisited after the mocks. Families who start in September of Year 11 and try to cover five subjects almost always end up achieving less than those who covered two properly.

  • Diagnostic papers in three or four subjects before choosing
  • Mock performance used as the mid-year review point
  • Separate trackers so progress is attributable
  • A written reason each time the subject allocation changes

A short pre-series block

Four to eight sessions in the weeks before a June or November series, aimed entirely at timed practice and the specific components that have been leaking marks. It cannot teach a syllabus from scratch, and a tutor should say so before taking the booking rather than after.

  • Full papers under timed conditions, marked to the published scheme
  • Command-word drilling on the long-answer questions
  • Practical or alternative-to-practical paper rehearsal
  • An honest statement of what the block cannot fix

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

Reading a marked IGCSE script: where a grade 6 turns into a grade 8

  • Crosses in one-mark questions: a content gap
  • Missing final marks in long questions: a command-word problem
  • Bare answers in Mathematics and sciences: lost method marks
  • Comments without mark codes: the script was not marked to the scheme

A marked past-paper script is the most informative document in this process and the one parents are least often shown. You do not need the subject to read one usefully. What you are looking for is the pattern of where the crosses sit. If they cluster in the one-mark recall questions, the problem is content coverage. If the early marks are secure and the last two marks of each long question are missing, the problem is command-word discipline and it is far cheaper to fix.

The second thing to look at is the length of the answers. On Cambridge and Edexcel papers alike, the mark tariff tells the candidate how much to write, and most students ignore it in both directions. A four-mark explanation answered in one line cannot score four, however correct the line is. A two-mark definition answered in a paragraph has cost ninety seconds that the last question needed. A tutor who annotates for length as well as accuracy is giving your child a transferable habit rather than a subject fact.

Third, look for the method marks. In Mathematics and the sciences, a wrong final answer with correct working still scores, and a right answer with no working often does not. Scripts from students who have been taught by worked examples on a board tend to show the opposite habit: a bare answer, confidently wrong, with nothing for an examiner to credit. This is the single most common diagnosable fault in the Abu Dhabi cohort and it shows up in the first session.

Finally, check whether the script was marked against the published mark scheme or against the tutor's judgement. These are not the same thing, and the difference is visible: a scheme-marked script has mark codes beside the annotations and a total that can be cross-checked against a grade threshold. A judgement-marked script has encouraging comments. Ask for the first kind.

The four-week record: what should exist after four paid sessions

Four sessions is roughly the point at which a private tutor should be able to show evidence rather than impressions. It is also the point at which many Abu Dhabi families quietly decide to continue without ever asking for any. A short, specific list of artefacts makes the decision rational, and it is reasonable to ask for the list before the first lesson rather than after the fourth.

Session one should produce a diagnostic: a real past paper, or two sections of one, sat under something close to timed conditions and marked against the published scheme. The output is a raw mark and a breakdown by question. A tutor who spends the first hour 'getting to know' the student and sets no paper has bought themselves a comfortable introduction and told you nothing. Sessions two and three should produce a written list of unsecured specification points, in the specification's own wording, so you can see what is being worked on and in what order.

By session four there should be a second marked script, on the same component, with a comparable mark. Comparable matters: a different paper from a different series tells you less than the same component from an adjacent year. If the mark has not moved, that is still information, and a tutor who names the reason - insufficient independent practice between sessions, a content gap wider than first thought, a tier mismatch - is being more useful than one who reports that the student is more confident.

The record also protects the student. A folder of dated scripts and drafts is the clearest evidence of authorship a candidate can have if a question is ever raised about coursework, and it is the reason we keep the trail in a form the student holds rather than one only the tutor can see.

What a two-mark answer and a six-mark answer each have to contain

  • Read the tariff, then choose the answer's shape before writing
  • One mark, one clause; two marks, two separate points
  • Write the formula before substituting, every time
  • Practise five long-tariff questions a week, marked to the scheme

The arithmetic of an IGCSE paper is rarely explained to students. A Cambridge Extended theory paper in a science carries eighty marks across roughly seventy-five minutes, which gives a little under a minute a mark including reading time. A candidate who writes a careful paragraph for every question runs out of paper time in the final third, and the questions at the end of these papers are usually the highest-tariff ones. The loss is not knowledge. It is pacing, and it is entirely teachable.

The habit worth installing is simple and mechanical: read the mark in the bracket, then decide the shape of the answer before writing. One mark means one clause. Two marks mean two separate creditable points, not one point expressed twice. A six-mark evaluation needs a structure - a position, support on both sides, and a judgement that refers back to the stimulus. Students who practise this on five past questions a week stop losing the pattern of marks that their subject knowledge had already earned.

In Mathematics the same arithmetic applies differently. Long multi-step questions carry method marks at each stage, so an incomplete attempt is worth more than a blank and far more than a bare wrong answer. The instruction that changes scores most reliably is to write down the formula before substituting, every time, even when the student can do it in their head. It costs four seconds and converts a zero into a partial score when the arithmetic goes wrong under pressure.

A private tutor is the right place to drill this because it requires immediate correction. In a class of twenty-eight an answer of the wrong length is marked and handed back a week later; one-to-one, it is interrupted mid-sentence and rewritten on the spot. That is the specific thing the format buys, and it is worth asking a prospective tutor how they handle it.

04

Coursework, controlled components and the drafts a tutor is allowed to read

Several IGCSE subjects carry an internally assessed component, and every one of them is governed by rules about whose work it is. The boundary is not vague and it is not a matter of taste. A tutor may teach the skills the component assesses, discuss the assessment criteria, question a student about their own reasoning, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not supply content for the piece, correct it line by line until it is no longer the student's prose, or hand over anything for the student to submit.

In practice the honest version of coursework support looks like this. The tutor reads the draft once, marks against the published criteria, and returns it with questions rather than corrections: this paragraph claims a result your data does not support, which part of the method produced it? That approach raises marks because the criteria reward the student's own analysis, and it leaves an audit trail of successive drafts in the student's own hand.

Where a provider offers finished pieces for a fee, that is a malpractice trigger for the candidate, not a shortcut. The consequence falls on the student: a board can void an entry, and in the worst case a whole series. A paid service that advertises completed internally assessed work is selling the student a risk they will carry alone, and an Abu Dhabi family should treat the offer as a reason to walk away from the provider entirely.

Keep the drafts. Dated versions, in the student's own files, are the single most useful thing to have if a school or board ever asks how a piece was produced. We tell students to save each version rather than overwriting, for exactly that reason.

Predicted grades, mock grades and what each one is actually worth

  • Working-at grade: current performance, moves slowly
  • Mock grade: a raw mark plus a threshold choice, often harsh on purpose
  • Predicted grade: a forecast sent to sixth forms, usually fixed in the autumn
  • The raw mark is the only one of the three that is directly comparable

Three different numbers circulate in an Abu Dhabi Year 11 household and they are routinely confused. The working-at grade on a report is a teacher's professional estimate of current performance against the specification, and it moves slowly. The mock grade is a raw mark converted using a threshold the school has chosen, often a previous series' boundaries, and it can be deliberately harsh. The predicted grade is what the school will give a sixth form, and it is a forecast of the final result rather than a description of the present.

For a private tutor the useful one is the raw mark behind the mock, not the letter or number it was converted into. Boundaries move between series, so two identical performances in different years can be reported as different grades. A mark of 54 out of 80 on an Extended theory paper is a fact; the grade it became depends on which threshold table the school applied. Ask for the mark, and ask which series' boundaries were used.

Mocks are also the moment a tier or board entry can still be changed. Entry deadlines for the main summer series sit months before the papers, and a school reviewing an entry needs evidence in the autumn rather than a request in the spring. Two marked full papers at the higher tier, sat under timed conditions, is the kind of evidence a head of department can act on. A parental opinion, however strongly held, is not.

Where predicted grades matter most is the sixth-form application. Most Abu Dhabi sixth forms publish subject-specific entry requirements, and the gap between the prediction and the requirement is the clearest target a tutor can be given. Working towards a published threshold in a named subject is a far better brief than working towards general improvement, and it makes the end of the engagement obvious.

06

What a private tutor charges in Abu Dhabi, and what the number includes

Published rates for private tuition in the UAE span roughly an order of magnitude, and the spread is mostly explained by who is teaching rather than by what is taught. At the bottom, platforms advertise university-student tutors from around AED 33 to AED 65 an hour: Tutopiya lists from AED 33 and EdFlik from AED 45. In the middle, agencies quote qualified subject tutors online from around AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. At the specialist end, Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table puts IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase quotes AED 270, and BartyED advertises AED 650 for a named premium tutor.

In-home tuition sits higher because the travel is in the price. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors in the UAE advertise AED 200 to 500. Monthly packages in the market cluster around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. These are other providers' published figures with their own framing, not an IB Gram price list; our own rates depend on subject, level and tutor and are quoted after the consultation.

What should be inside the number is worth settling before the first invoice. Marking a full past paper to the published scheme takes a tutor forty to sixty minutes and is the most valuable thing they do between lessons. Some providers include it, some bill it, and some simply do not do it. The same question applies to a written session note, to the component tracker, and to any coursework draft read outside a session. Three quotes at the same hourly rate can mean three quite different purchases.

The honest comparison is cost per recovered mark rather than cost per hour. A specialist at AED 300 who identifies a command-word fault in week one and converts six marks a paper is cheaper than a generalist at AED 120 who re-teaches content the student already had. That is not an argument for always buying the expensive option; it is an argument for insisting on the diagnostic before committing to a block.

A private tutor in the room against one-to-one online, judged on the record

Abu Dhabi parents searching for a private tutor usually picture someone at the dining table, and the comparison is worth making properly rather than brushed aside. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, so this is not a sales choice we are defending; it is a difference you should be able to weigh. Face-to-face tuition inside the UAE is not something we provide, and the honest case for the alternative rests on the record it produces and the tutor pool it opens.

The practical arguments for a visiting tutor are real: a younger child is easier to hold to task with an adult beside them, a physical textbook can be shared, and a parent can overhear the lesson. The arguments against are equally real and specific to this emirate. Travel is in the price. A tutor crossing from the island to Khalifa City at 17:00 is paid for that time whether it is billed as travel or absorbed into the rate, and the available pool narrows to whoever is within a tolerable drive on the right evening.

For an IGCSE student the pool question is decisive more often than parents expect. Edexcel Further Pure Mathematics, Cambridge Additional Mathematics, Computer Science Paper 2, Arabic First Language and the separate sciences at Extended tier are not subjects where a district has depth. Online delivery replaces the twenty-minute radius with a specification code, and that is the whole of the trade.

On the evidence question the online format has a concrete advantage. Work happens on a shared screen, which means the annotated script, the draft history and the session note exist by default rather than as a favour. A parent who cannot overhear the lesson reads the marked paper instead, which is the more informative of the two. That is the exchange, stated plainly.

Is the person you are paying permitted to tutor in the UAE?

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years
  • Eligibility is wide: teachers, employees, students aged 15-18, university students
  • No fine schedule is published, so no amount can be quoted honestly
  • Your child's own school teacher is the one option to rule out in Abu Dhabi

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and the position is clearer than most families realise. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the private tuition work permit, administered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The permit is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the ministry's app, website and e-services.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are, in the ministry's own words, subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No schedule of fine amounts has been published, so no figure should be quoted to you - and a provider who quotes one is guessing. The useful question to a prospective private tutor is simply whether they hold the permit, and the reasonable answer is yes with a reference, or no with a reason.

A second rule applies specifically in this emirate and catches families out. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the permit holder's own school. This is press-reported rather than quoted from the policy document, so verify it against the current ADEK text - but it means the most tempting option available to an Abu Dhabi parent, your child's own subject teacher privately, is the one to rule out.

A tutoring operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor. That requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit in Dubai, with initial approval first and annual renewal. IB Gram holds no regulator permit of that kind and makes no claim to one; we are not a licensed centre, we hold no accreditation from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, and any provider telling you otherwise about itself should be asked for the permit number.

09

When the evidence says stop paying

A tutoring engagement should have an end, and the record is what tells you where it is. Three patterns in the evidence mean the right decision is to stop or to change something rather than to buy more hours. The first is a flat component mark across three comparable papers with no named reason. If the same component scores the same after six weeks of work on it, either the diagnosis was wrong or the work between sessions is not happening, and another month at the same rate will not resolve either.

The second is the opposite pattern: the mark has reached the target and the student is secure. This is the one almost nobody acts on. A student who is consistently at the top of the range on the component that was weak does not need a weekly hour in that subject, and the hour is better moved to a different subject or stopped. A tutor who proposes this themselves is worth keeping for the next child.

The third is a tier or entry problem the tuition cannot fix. If two full Extended papers under timed conditions both land well below the threshold with eight weeks to go, the honest conversation is about the entry rather than about more sessions. Similarly, a student entered for English as a Second Language who is reading comfortably above that level has a placement problem, not a tuition problem, and the fix is a conversation with the school before the entry deadline.

There is also a limit we state before anyone pays. If no specialist is available for a specific code at the hour a family needs, we say so rather than placing a generalist against a specialist brief. The alternative - putting a Mathematics tutor in front of a Further Pure paper because the slot was open - is how a family ends up four weeks and several hundred dirhams into an engagement that was never going to produce the evidence they were promised.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi families enquire from across the island and the mainland communities. The district matters for scheduling rather than for tutor supply, because the lesson arrives over video; what changes between districts is the hour at which a student is genuinely able to work.

Al Mushrif and Al Nahyan

The oldest British-curriculum catchment on the island, with short school runs and an early finish. A 16:30 start is realistic here, which makes two sessions in one evening possible for siblings.

Khalifa City and Shakhbout City

Villa communities with long bus runs from island schools. Students often arrive home after 16:00 and need food and a break, so 17:30 or 18:00 is the first hour with any attention in it.

Saadiyat Island

A short bridge crossing but a heavily scheduled cohort, with sport and music filling the early evening. Weekend mornings are frequently the most productive slot booked here.

Al Reem Island and Al Maryah

Apartment households where the study space question matters as much as the timetable. A lesson needs a door that closes, and families here often reorganise a room before the second session.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Schools inside or beside the community, which hands back most of a commute. The recovered forty minutes is usually the difference between a 90-minute session being feasible and not.

Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Mainland districts with large multi-child households and long drives to island schools. Later starts and weekend blocks are the pattern that survives here past half term.

Yas Island and Al Reef

Newer communities with young British-curriculum cohorts moving into Years 10 and 11 together. Demand clusters on the same two or three subjects, which makes the coverage question worth asking early.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi island

The island holds the emirate's longest-established British-curriculum schools, most of them entering candidates for Cambridge IGCSE with some Edexcel entries in individual subjects. Students we support attend schools across this cluster; the mix of boards inside a single school is the reason a tutor must ask for the syllabus code rather than assume it.

Khalifa City, Al Raha and the mainland communities

The corridor from Khalifa City out to Al Shamkha and Mussafah carries the largest share of the emirate's British-curriculum enrolment, and almost all of the Year 10 and Year 11 private tuition enquiries from outside the island. Schools here run both boards and in several cases both tiers in the same subject.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

A consultation that ends with a brief, not a quote

Fifteen or twenty minutes on the phone covering the subject, the board, the syllabus code, the tier, the most recent raw mark and the hour the student can actually concentrate in. The output is a written brief naming the component to be targeted. If the brief cannot be written, the match is not ready to make.

  2. 02

A trial lesson that is a diagnostic

The first lesson is free and is spent on a real past paper rather than on introductions. It produces a raw mark and a question-by-question breakdown. The condition is simply that it is one lesson per student; if the fit is wrong, you have the diagnostic and owe nothing.

  3. 03

    The component plan

After the diagnostic the tutor sets out which component is being targeted, in what order the unsecured specification points will be covered, and what the next marked script will be. You receive it in writing before the second session is booked.

  4. 04

    Fortnightly marked evidence

Every second or third session produces an annotated script marked to the published scheme with mark codes, plus a short session note. The component tracker is updated with the raw mark and the paper reference so the comparison stays honest.

  5. 05

    A half-term review with a decision

Every six to seven weeks the record is reviewed and one of three decisions is made: continue, change the target component, or stop. A review that always concludes continue is not a review, and we would rather lose the hour than keep it without a reason.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on the syllabus code

Cambridge 0580 and Edexcel 4MA1 are different examinations with different habits, and a tutor who has not looked at your child's paper is guessing. The code is confirmed before the match, and if we cannot cover it we say so rather than sending someone close enough.

Marking to the published scheme

Scripts come back with mark codes and a total that can be cross-checked against a threshold, not with encouraging comments. Scheme marking is the slowest part of a tutor's week and the part that produces the information you are paying for.

The honesty line stated in advance

On internally assessed work the tutor teaches, marks to the criteria and asks questions. Content, prose and finished pieces are not supplied. The position is on the page and in the brief so nobody has to negotiate it mid-draft.

Coverage limits disclosed before payment

Some codes and some hours we cannot cover in Abu Dhabi. You are told which before anything is booked, and offered an alternative slot or an honest no. A generalist against a specialist brief wastes a month and your money.

No accreditation claims

IB Gram holds no permit, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, and claims none. We explain what each body does and point you to its own pages, which is a different thing from implying an endorsement.

A record the student keeps

Marked scripts, drafts and session notes live in the student's own files, dated. It makes progress checkable by anyone, and it is the clearest authorship evidence a candidate can hold if a coursework question is ever raised.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What should an IGCSE private tutor in Abu Dhabi show me after a month?+

Four things. A diagnostic from session one: a real past paper marked against the published scheme, with a raw mark and a question-by-question breakdown. A written list of unsecured specification points in the syllabus's own wording. At least one more annotated script on the same component, so the two marks are comparable. And a short note on each session. If what you receive after four paid hours is a verbal report that your child seems more confident, you have no way to judge whether the hour is working, and that is the problem this record solves.

Does my child's school use Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel for IGCSE?+

It can be both, in different subjects, inside the same school. Abu Dhabi British-curriculum schools choose board by department, so a student may sit Cambridge 0620 Chemistry and Edexcel 4MA1 Mathematics in the same series. The entry form or the exams officer will confirm it, and the syllabus code is printed on past papers your child has been given. It matters because the papers differ in structure, tiering and mark allocation, and a tutor working from the wrong specification will prepare for questions that will not appear.

Can a private tutor get my child moved from Core to Extended tier?+

A tutor cannot change an entry, but can produce the evidence a school needs to review one. Two full Extended papers, sat under timed conditions and marked to the published scheme, give a head of department a mark to act on. The timing is the constraint: entries for the main summer series close months before the papers, so the conversation belongs in the autumn of Year 11, not the spring. A request without marked papers behind it rarely succeeds, and a request after the deadline cannot.

Is a raw mark more useful than the mock grade my child was given?+

Yes, and it is the number to ask for. A mock grade is a raw mark converted using a threshold the school chose, often from a previous series and sometimes deliberately severe. Boundaries move between series, so identical performances in different years can be reported as different grades. A mark of 54 out of 80 on a named paper is a fact that can be compared across attempts. Ask for the mark and the paper reference, and ask which series' boundaries were applied to it.

How many subjects should one weekly hour of private tuition cover?+

One, or at most two with a clear reason. A Year 11 student in Abu Dhabi is usually entered for eight to ten subjects, and an hour spread across four of them delivers fifteen minutes each, which is enough to review homework and nothing else. The better approach is a diagnostic in three or four subjects first, then concentrate the hour where the lost marks are densest. Revisit the allocation after the mocks, and ask for the reason in writing each time it changes.

What can a tutor legitimately do with my child's IGCSE coursework?+

Teach the skills the component assesses, explain the published criteria, read a draft the student wrote and mark it against those criteria, and ask questions that make the student revise their own reasoning. What a tutor must not do is supply content, edit until the prose is no longer the student's, or hand over anything for submission. Keep dated versions of each draft rather than overwriting; that file history is the clearest authorship evidence a candidate can hold if the question is ever raised.

Does an IGCSE private tutor working in Abu Dhabi need the MoHRE permit, and how do I verify it?+

Yes. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the MoHRE private tuition work permit, granted free of charge for two years, with applications made through the ministry's app, website and e-services and a stated two-working-day completion time. Eligible holders include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Ask a prospective tutor directly whether they hold it. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published.

Why should I not hire a teacher from my child's own school?+

ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the holder's own school. This is press-reported, so check the current ADEK policy document before relying on the exact wording. The arrangement also creates an obvious conflict around predicted grades and internally assessed work, which is reason enough to avoid it independently of the rule.

What does one-to-one IGCSE tuition cost per hour around Abu Dhabi?+

Published market rates span a wide band. Platforms advertise university-student tutors from roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33 and EdFlik from AED 45. Agencies quote qualified online subject tutors from about AED 150 to 300, Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 and above on Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table, with TutorChase at AED 270. In-home runs AED 180 to 500 because travel is inside the rate. Those are other providers' published figures, not ours.

Is it worth paying more for a specialist than for a general tutor?+

Judge it on cost per recovered mark rather than cost per hour. A specialist who identifies in week one that the student is losing the last two marks of every long question, and drills the command words that fix it, can convert five or six marks a paper. A generalist re-teaching content the student already had will not, at any price. The practical safeguard is to insist on the diagnostic before committing to a block of sessions, so the decision rests on a marked paper rather than on a rate card.

My child is eight weeks from the papers. Is private tuition still worth starting?+

Yes, with a narrow brief. Eight weeks cannot deliver a syllabus, and a tutor who implies otherwise is overselling. What it can do is timed practice on full papers, command-word drilling on the long-tariff questions, and rehearsal of the practical or alternative-to-practical paper that classrooms rarely have time for. Pick one or two subjects, not five. Expect the first session to be a diagnostic so the remaining seven are aimed, and expect an honest statement of what the block will not fix.

How does an online lesson handle the IGCSE science practical component?+

Around a fifth of the Cambridge science mark sits in the practical or alternative-to-practical paper, and both are assessed on paper rather than on bench technique. The alternative-to-practical paper asks candidates to read a method critically, spot a control variable, criticise a table, plot and interpret. All of that is rehearsable on a shared screen with past papers, and it is the component with the highest ratio of marks to teaching time in the whole specification. School practical work remains the school's; the paper skills are what a tutor drills.

Which IGCSE grades does the UAE Ministry of Education count for equivalency?+

For the British track, students must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. One ranking competitor publishes a six-subject figure; the sourced rule is five. Verify the current requirement on the ministry's own pages before acting, and treat equivalency as a process the family completes, not a tutor.

When should we stop paying for private tuition?+

When the evidence says so, and there are three honest triggers. A component mark flat across three comparable papers with no named reason means the diagnosis or the independent practice is wrong, and more hours will not fix either. A component consistently at the top of the range means the target has been met and the hour should move or end. Two timed papers well below the threshold eight weeks out means the conversation is about the entry rather than more sessions. A tutor who raises any of these unprompted is worth keeping.

What happens if no tutor covers my child's syllabus code?+

You are told before anything is booked. Some codes are genuinely thin in this market: Edexcel Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1, Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 Paper 2, Arabic First Language 0508 at the hour an Abu Dhabi student can work. The alternatives we offer are a different slot where the specialist is free, or an honest no. Placing a generalist against a specialist brief because the diary suited is how families lose a month, and it is the one thing the brief-first process exists to prevent.

Start with a marked paper, not a promise

If you are weighing up an IGCSE private tutor in Abu Dhabi, the first thing to ask for is not a rate or a testimonial. Ask what document you will hold after four sessions. A diagnostic marked to the published scheme, a list of unsecured specification points in the syllabus's own words, a second comparable script, and a component tracker with paper references on it. That set of papers is enough to judge whether the hour is working, and enough to tell you when to stop. The trial lesson is free and is spent on a real past paper, one per student, so you leave the first hour with the diagnostic whether you continue or not. Tell us the subject, the board and the code, and we will tell you honestly whether we can cover it.
