IB DP Economics HL Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Economics HL tutor in Abu Dhabi is usually bought to repair one specific component, and the cost follows from which one. This page prices the subject the way it is actually assessed in this emirate: four components, a 45-mark portfolio broken down by criterion letter, and a Paper 3 that exists only at Higher Level and accounts for most of the difference in what Abu Dhabi families end up spending. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and the first session is at no charge.

  • Priced by component: Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3 and the portfolio
  • Portfolio feedback against the published criterion letters and marks
  • Market AED bands quoted with the provider that published them
  • One full session at no charge before any payment, no card held

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What Higher Level Economics support costs in Abu Dhabi, component by component

Nobody buys Economics tutoring in general. Families buy it because something specific has gone wrong, and in Higher Level Economics there are exactly four things it can be: Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3 or the portfolio. Each is a different repair job, consumes a different number of hours, and therefore produces a different total on the invoice at the same hourly rate. Pricing the subject without naming the component is how a family ends up spending a term's budget on the part that was already working.

The hourly rate itself is the least variable part. Market rates for IB specialist tutoring in the UAE run roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour, a band published in Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. TutorChase publishes AED 270. Unitors lists IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. BartyED publishes AED 650 for an examiner tier. Entry tiers advertised from AED 33 to AED 65 by Tutopiya and EdFlik are university-student and group formats, which is a different product from Higher Level Economics and should not be compared on price alone.

Paper 3 is the component that makes Higher Level Economics cost more than Standard Level, and it is the reason the two pages on this site are not interchangeable. Paper 3 exists only at Higher Level, carries 30% of the grade on its own, and asks for calculation and policy recommendation rather than essay writing. Students who are fluent at Paper 1 essays frequently arrive at Paper 3 having never been taught to work a numerical question under time pressure, and that gap takes a block of dedicated sessions rather than general revision.

The portfolio is the component families most often underestimate. It is 20% of the Higher Level grade, three commentaries of no more than 800 words each, assessed against lettered criteria for a combined 45 marks. Almost all of the marks lost in a first draft are lost in two places: the diagram and the key concept. Both are repairable in a small number of hours, which makes the portfolio the cheapest marks on the course to move, and the ones a family should price first.

The fourth cost input is local. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of Abu Dhabi private schools, and its professional-ethics rules, as reported by Gulf News, bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. The MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years and carries a code of conduct saying the same. The lawful Abu Dhabi pool is therefore smaller than the number of Economics teachers in the emirate, and a smaller lawful pool prices higher. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address; home visits are a service we run only in India, and every Abu Dhabi lesson runs online over live video.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Higher Level Economics sits in Group 3 of the Diploma. The routes below decide how much groundwork an Abu Dhabi student arrives with, which is the first thing that changes a cost estimate.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three normally at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Economics is organised around four units and nine key concepts, and at Higher Level it is examined over three papers plus the portfolio. The nine concepts are not decoration: one of them has to be explicitly applied in each commentary and carries its own criterion marks.

Higher Level Economics groups in Abu Dhabi are frequently small, sometimes fewer than ten students, because the subject competes with Business Management for the same choosers. A small group means a student sees very few worked Paper 3 answers and very few marked commentaries before their own are due, which is precisely the gap that drives families to buy outside hours.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Individuals and Societies in MYP assesses knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. The last of those transfers directly into the evaluation criterion of an Economics commentary. What MYP does not supply is diagram technique, which is the single most mechanical skill in the Diploma course and the one most Abu Dhabi students arrive without.

Where an Abu Dhabi school runs MYP to Year 11 rather than entering an IGCSE cohort, students reach DP1 Economics with strong written argument and no prior exposure to supply and demand diagrams. A short, mechanical diagram block in the first term is a cheaper purchase than essay coaching in DP2.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Combines a small number of DP courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. A CP student taking Economics sits the same papers and submits the same portfolio. Higher Level Economics inside a CP is unusual, and it removes the Theory of Knowledge load that otherwise competes with portfolio deadlines in the second year.

In Abu Dhabi a CP Economics student is often the only one in their year taking the course, which means no classroom comparison for a commentary draft. That is the scenario where the cost of one-to-one hours is not a premium over classroom teaching but a substitute for it.

CoreAges 16-19 · alongside all six subjects

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

The Diploma core runs alongside Economics and competes for the same weeks. An Extended Essay in Economics is a separate 4,000-word piece supervised at school, distinct from the portfolio, with its own authenticity record. Families budgeting for Higher Level Economics support should decide early whether they are also buying essay research-method teaching, because the two needs peak in the same term.

Abu Dhabi schools typically set internal Extended Essay and portfolio deadlines earlier than the IB's own windows. Two deadlines in one term is the commonest reason a family's monthly tutoring spend doubles without anybody planning it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level Economics is the subject in question. The ones after it are what Abu Dhabi students pair it with, each annotated for what the pairing does to the number of hours a family ends up buying.

Economics (Higher Level)

Higher Level, Group 3

Three papers plus a portfolio. Paper 1 is extended response at 20%, Paper 2 data response at 30%, Paper 3 a quantitative policy paper at 30% and Higher Level only, and the portfolio 20%. The quantitative load in Paper 3 is what distinguishes the Higher Level course and the Higher Level tutoring bill.

Economics (Standard Level)

Standard Level, Group 3

Two papers and the portfolio, with no Paper 3. Paper 1 carries 30%, Paper 2 40% and the portfolio 30%. Because the portfolio is weighted higher at Standard Level, a family moving a student down after DP1 should rebalance spending towards commentary work rather than papers.

Business Management

Higher Level and Standard Level

The usual alternative choice rather than a companion, though some Abu Dhabi students take both. Shared ground is limited to market structures and some stakeholder analysis; the assessment styles differ sharply. Two separate tutors is normally the honest answer, which doubles the hourly spend.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Higher Level and Standard Level

Supplies most of what Paper 3 needs: percentage change, index numbers, elasticity calculation and interpretation of real data. A student taking Applications usually needs transfer coaching rather than new teaching, which is a cheaper purchase.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Higher Level and Standard Level

Produces students who are algebraically confident and unpractised at applied economic calculation under time pressure. The Paper 3 gap for these students is presentation and interpretation rather than arithmetic, and it closes in a small number of sessions once named.

Geography

Higher Level and Standard Level

Shares development economics, trade and sustainability content. Students taking both can be taught the shared material once, and an Abu Dhabi family booking separate tutors for the two often pays twice for the same explanation of global interdependence.

Global Politics

Higher Level and Standard Level

Overlaps on trade blocs, development and intervention. The evaluation habits it teaches transfer usefully into Economics Paper 1 part (b) answers, which is where most Abu Dhabi students lose essay marks.

English A: Language and Literature

Higher Level and Standard Level

Not an Economics subject, but the commentary and essay components are written assessments and weak written structure shows up in both. Where a student is losing marks for disorganisation rather than economics, that is an English problem being paid for as an Economics problem.

Extended Essay in Economics

Core, 4,000 words

A separate piece from the portfolio, supervised at school. A tutor can teach question framing, data sourcing and economic method, and comment on drafts the student has written. The words must be the student's own and the supervisor records authenticity as part of the assessment.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma candidates

Shares nothing in content and everything in calendar. The exhibition and essay deadlines land in the same weeks as portfolio commentaries at most Abu Dhabi schools, and any honest costing has to account for the weeks when a weekly Economics hour is unaffordable in time.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Abu Dhabi families buy Higher Level Economics support, each priced by what it actually contains rather than by the length of the commitment. All run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Portfolio commentary block

The cheapest marks on the course. Three or four sessions across the portfolio cycle: choosing an article that genuinely supports analysis, selecting and drawing the right diagram, applying a named key concept properly, and tightening evaluation inside the 800-word limit. The tutor teaches and comments on drafts the student has written.

  • Article selection checked before the commentary is started
  • Diagram chosen and drawn to the standard the criteria reward
  • Key concept applied explicitly rather than mentioned
  • Feedback by criterion letter on the student's own draft

Paper 3 quantitative block

A dedicated block for the Higher Level only component, usually six to eight sessions. Percentage change, index numbers, elasticity, market calculations, and the policy recommendation structure the paper asks for. This is the block that accounts for most of the difference between a Higher Level and a Standard Level Economics bill.

  • Calculation types worked to method, not to answer
  • Working shown the way the mark scheme credits it
  • Policy recommendations structured against real constraints
  • Timed practice in the final third of the block

Weekly hour across both Diploma years

One fixed hour a week from DP1, tracking the school's scheme of work slightly ahead of it. The highest total spend and the lowest cost per mark moved, because it prevents the backlog that the other two modes exist to clear. Abu Dhabi families who start this in DP1 rarely buy an emergency block later.

  • A protected slot between 16:30 and 20:00 Gulf Standard Time
  • Diagram technique built in the first term, not the last
  • Portfolio commentaries planned rather than rescued
  • Paper 3 work begins before the DP2 mock window

01

Pricing Higher Level Economics by the component that is broken

The useful question is not what an Economics tutor charges in Abu Dhabi. It is how many hours this particular problem takes, because the rate is roughly fixed and the hours are not. Four components, four different repair jobs, four very different totals.

Diagram technique is the cheapest thing on the course to fix and the most commonly broken. A student who cannot draw and label a correctly shifted curve under time pressure loses marks in Paper 1, in Paper 2 and in every commentary, which means one mechanical block of two or three sessions pays back across three components at once. Families who buy content revision instead will spend a term and see the same diagram errors.

Paper 3 is the expensive one, and it is specific to Higher Level. It carries 30% of the grade, it is quantitative, and most students have had far less practice at it than at essays because schools reach it late in DP2. Six to eight focused sessions is a realistic block, and buying it in March rather than November costs the same per hour while delivering considerably less.

Essay structure for Paper 1 is the slowest to move, because it is a writing problem rather than an economics problem. Evaluation in part (b) is where Abu Dhabi students lose most of their Paper 1 marks: the analysis is competent and the judgement is absent. That takes a run of marked essays over a term, not a weekend intensive, and a provider promising otherwise is selling you optimism.

The table below sets out the four components with the market band each repair sits in. The rates are the market's, attributed, not a price list for this platform.

The 45-mark portfolio, criterion letter by criterion letter

No competitor page measured in this research set names a single Economics internal assessment criterion, which is remarkable, because the criteria are published, lettered and worth 45 marks between them. A parent who knows the letters can read a returned commentary and see exactly where the marks went.

The portfolio is three commentaries. Each must be no more than 800 words, each must draw on a different unit of the syllabus, each must use a different source published no earlier than one year before the commentary was written, and each must apply one of the nine key concepts explicitly. Each commentary is assessed against five lettered criteria. A further criterion covers whether the portfolio as a whole meets those presentation requirements, which is three marks most students should collect in full and some lose through a word count or a date.

The marks are not spread evenly across skills, and that is the practical point. Diagram and application carry three marks each per commentary. Terminology carries two. Key concept carries three. Evaluation carries three. So the diagram, the key concept and the evaluation between them hold nine of the fourteen marks available in each commentary, and all three are mechanical enough to teach directly.

What a tutor does here has a hard boundary that is worth putting in writing. A tutor can teach diagram technique, explain what applying a key concept actually looks like as opposed to naming one, show what the top evaluation band contains, and comment criterion by criterion on a commentary the student has written. A tutor cannot supply text, cannot choose and summarise the article for the student, and cannot revise a draft into a submission. The school supervisor keeps the authenticity record, and the IB treats a breach as malpractice by the candidate.

Paper 3, and why Higher Level costs more than Standard Level

  • Paper 3 is Higher Level only and carries 30% of the subject grade
  • The calculation itself is accessible; the shortfall is practice and shown working
  • Policy recommendations reward the opposite instincts to Paper 1 essays
  • Buying the block in the autumn of DP2 costs the same and delivers more

Paper 3 is the single clearest reason a Higher Level Economics plan costs more than a Standard Level one in this emirate. It exists only at Higher Level, it carries 30% of the subject grade, and it does something none of the other components does: it asks for calculation, and then asks for a policy recommendation built on the result.

The arithmetic involved is not difficult. Percentage change, index numbers, elasticity, tax incidence, calculations around market equilibrium, and the derivation of figures from a given data set are all within reach of any Diploma student. The problem is almost never capability. It is practice, presentation and the habit of showing working in the form the mark scheme credits. A student who writes the right number with no working loses marks that a student with the wrong number and clear method sometimes keeps.

The second half of the paper is where Higher Level Economics students in Abu Dhabi most often come unstuck. A policy recommendation is not an essay and it is not a list. It asks for a specific, justified choice, with the trade-offs named and the constraints acknowledged, in a tight word budget under time pressure. Students who write beautiful Paper 1 essays frequently write unusable Paper 3 recommendations, because the two components reward opposite instincts.

Timing matters for cost here more than anywhere else on the course. Most schools reach Paper 3 material late, which means the families who buy support for it do so in the DP2 spring, at the moment when evening slots across the emirate are scarcest. Six to eight sessions bought in the autumn of DP2 and six to eight bought in March cost the same and are not the same purchase.

04

Where Abu Dhabi Economics students lose Paper 1 and Paper 2 marks

The two essay-and-data components hold half the Higher Level grade between them, and the losses on both are predictable enough to diagnose from a single marked paper. They are also the losses least likely to be fixed by reading the textbook again.

Paper 1 is extended response in two parts. Part (a) asks for explanation and part (b) for discussion or evaluation, and the mark distribution punishes students who treat both the same way. The dominant failure is a part (b) that analyses competently and then stops, with no judgement, no weighing of the alternatives and no acknowledgement of context. A student can know the economics completely and lose a third of the available marks there.

Paper 2 is data response, and the dominant failure is describing the data rather than using it. A question asking the student to use the extract expects specific figures, specific quotations and specific links to theory. Answers that paraphrase the extract and then set out textbook theory beside it read fluently and score poorly. The fix is mechanical: every claim tied to a named piece of evidence from the material in front of them.

Both components also reward diagram use inside written answers, which is why diagram technique is the highest-return purchase on the whole course. A correctly labelled diagram with a stated shift, an identified new equilibrium and a sentence in the text that actually refers to it earns marks in Paper 1, in Paper 2 and in criterion A of every commentary. Students who draw diagrams as decoration earn none of them.

What Economics tuition costs beside everything else a family pays

Tutoring is usually assessed against the hourly rate of another tutor, which is the least informative comparison available. The more useful frame is what it costs beside the other items in an Abu Dhabi education budget, because that is what determines whether a plan is affordable across two years rather than one term.

Context on fees: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package Dubai valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Abu Dhabi fees run through ADEK's own approval process. Tutoring carries no fee freeze and no cap, which is the strongest argument available for buying fewer hours earlier.

Monthly package rates circulating in this market run around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a single weekly hour are AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. Read the top band as the realistic exam-year number for Higher Level Economics, since the final term usually means two hours a week rather than one.

One item families forget entirely: examination entry. A candidate retaking a subject, or sitting as a private candidate, pays entry fees through the school or an approved centre, and those are separate from tuition and set by the board and centre rather than by any tutor. Build them into the two-year picture before committing a monthly tutoring budget that leaves no room for them.

ADEK, the permit, and the tutor you are not allowed to hire

  • ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain private schools
  • ADEK ethics rules bar paid tutoring of students at the teacher's own school
  • The MoHRE permit comes from Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is free for two years
  • No fine schedule is published; treat any quoted penalty figure as unverified

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain private schools are overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which u.ae describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK publishes inspection outcomes and runs the fee-increase approval process for the emirate. It is named by none of the competitor pages measured in this cluster, which is a strange omission on pages aimed at Abu Dhabi parents.

The rule that affects a family's choice most directly concerns teachers. Gulf News reported that ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and that staff tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Confirm the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it.

The federal position is clearer still. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any specific amount quoted to you is unverified.

What a parent should do with all of this is short. Ask whether the tutor holds a current MoHRE private tuition work permit. Ask whether they teach at your child's school. A provider who cannot answer both questions plainly is selling a risk alongside the hour, and the risk does not sit with them. MoHRE's own Private Tutor Licensing service lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, so there is no reason for a permit to be a mystery.

Online against in-home for Economics in this emirate

A good proportion of Abu Dhabi families searching for an Economics tutor start by looking for one who can drive over, and that deserves a straight comparison rather than a dismissal. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, so what follows is the comparison rather than a sales argument.

On rate the two overlap. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and UAE home tutors generally at AED 200 to AED 500 with travel included, against AED 200 to AED 450 for an online IB specialist. The difference is not price. It is which tutors exist for you. Higher Level Economics with real Paper 3 experience and portfolio supervision behind them is a narrow brief, and the subset of that group living within a workable evening drive of Al Shamkha or Baniyas is very small.

The second difference is operational. Economics sessions live on diagrams, data extracts and mark schemes. A shared screen puts all three in front of both people simultaneously, a diagram can be drawn, corrected and annotated live, and the annotated version is saved rather than folded into a bag. A commentary draft can be read, commented on and returned inside the hour.

The third is scheduling, and in this emirate it is decisive. A tutor crossing the mainland at 17:00 holds one slot that evening. Online, a student can take a 30-minute diagram clinic the night before a mock, which nobody would drive for. The honest limitation is unchanged: a student who will not engage without a person in the room is a poor fit, and the free first session exists so a family establishes that before spending anything.

Availability, and what happens when no Higher Level specialist is free

  • The narrow brief is Paper 3 fluency plus portfolio supervision plus a current permit
  • DP2 spring evening slots are the scarcest hours in the Abu Dhabi market
  • A 20:00 or weekend slot widens the pool more than any other concession
  • Where a tutor is not UAE-resident, that is stated before you commit

Availability is the thing nobody in this market publishes, and for Higher Level Economics in Abu Dhabi it is a real constraint rather than a sales device. The brief is narrow: current syllabus, comfortable with Paper 3 quantitative work, experienced at portfolio supervision, and lawfully permitted to tutor in the UAE. The ADEK ethics position and the MoHRE permit regime both narrow the resident pool further.

For a weekday evening slot in DP1 a match is usually straightforward. For a 17:00 slot in the February or March of DP2, when every Diploma family in the emirate wants the same hour, it is not. At that point there are three honest answers and a provider who always says yes is not giving you any of them.

A different time is the cheapest concession and the most effective: moving to 20:00 or a weekend morning widens the available pool substantially in exam term. A different tutor profile is the second: a Business Management or Geography specialist who also teaches Economics can handle Paper 1 and Paper 2 work competently even if Paper 3 is not their strongest ground, and that trade-off should be named rather than hidden. The third is waiting with a date attached rather than being matched to whoever is free.

Where no UAE-resident specialist is available, a matched tutor may be based elsewhere and teaching on Gulf Standard Time, and that is disclosed before any commitment. Two providers ranking for UAE searches route parents to contact numbers outside the UAE without stating where delivery happens, which is the sort of thing a family discovers at the least convenient moment.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi families pay different totals partly because of where they live: school choice follows community, and school choice determines whether Economics is offered at Higher Level at all, how large the group is, and when a session can realistically start.

Saadiyat Island

Several established Diploma cohorts within minutes of each other. Higher Level Economics is offered at most of them, groups are reasonable in size, and sessions can start at 16:30, so an hour costs an hour rather than an hour plus a drive.

Al Reem Island

Towers with a growing Diploma population and a bridge commute. Economics groups at nearby schools are small. Families here commonly buy a Paper 3 block rather than a full-year plan, because the classroom covers content adequately and quantitative work is where it stops.

Khalifa City

Villa communities feeding the Khalifa City and Al Raha school corridor. The afternoon run towards Dubai makes a fixed 17:30 online slot far more reliable than any arrangement involving travel, which protects the weekly cadence through the DP2 spring.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Short school runs and a high proportion of students taking two Group 3 subjects. The cost question here is usually whether one tutor can cover Economics and Geography, and the answer is often yes for the shared development content.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer schools with young Diploma cohorts, where Higher Level Economics may run with very few students. Fewer classmates means fewer marked commentaries to learn from, which is a direct driver of outside spend here.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Older island neighbourhoods with larger, long-running Diploma groups. More internal mock papers circulate, so families tend to buy targeted component blocks rather than continuous support.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland communities with longer commutes and a wide curriculum spread. A specialist within a short drive is unlikely; online delivery removes the travel premium that an in-home rate carries in this part of the emirate.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Fast-growing mainland districts where a Higher Level Economics student may be one of two or three in their year. The realistic comparison here is not online against in-home but one-to-one against no specialist at all.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Saadiyat Diploma schools

These schools run the emirate's longest-established Group 3 provision and set internal portfolio deadlines well ahead of the IB's own window. A family pricing portfolio support should ask the school for the commentary deadlines first, because those dates determine whether the work is planning or rescue.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas schools

Much of the emirate's newer IB provision sits here. Higher Level Economics groups are small, which has one clear financial consequence: fewer marked exemplars in circulation, so parents buy the exemplar effect in paid hours instead.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • Emirates National Schools

Mainland and Mussafah schools

A wider curriculum mix including schools that run IGCSE to Year 11. Students arriving from an IGCSE Economics or Business background usually have content and lack diagram discipline, which is the cheapest of all the gaps to close.

  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy
  • GEMS Cambridge International School Abu Dhabi
  • Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi

Schools are named purely as context for the Abu Dhabi Diploma landscape; IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school, school group, regulator or examination board.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component, not the subject

Tell us which of Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3 or the portfolio is the problem, and what the last mark on it was. That single sentence narrows the plan and the cost more than any general description of how Economics is going. If you are not sure, the first session establishes it.

  2. 02

Send one marked piece of work

A returned Paper 1 part (b), a marked data-response question or a commentary with the school's criterion comments on it. Any one of those tells a specialist in five minutes whether the loss is diagram technique, evaluation, evidence use or quantitative method.

  3. 03

Take the first session at no charge

A full session online with the matched tutor, with no payment and no card held. It should end with a written component-by-component view: what is costing marks, how many sessions that specific repair takes, and in what order to buy them if the budget is finite.

  4. 04

Buy the blocks in cost-effective order

Diagram technique first, because it returns marks in three components at once. Then the portfolio, which holds 45 marks and is the most teachable. Then Paper 3 if the student is at Higher Level. Paper 1 evaluation last, because it is the slowest to move and needs a term rather than a block.

  5. 05

Review on marked work every six weeks

Compare marks by component against the starting position rather than against a target. If the component bought has not moved in six weeks, change the diagnosis, the mode or the tutor. Continuing to buy the same hours because the sessions feel productive is the commonest way a budget disappears.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Costs explained by component, with sources

Three of the six competitor pages measured for this cluster publish no price at all and the two that do quote dollars. Every AED range here is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, and tied to the specific component a family would be buying.

The portfolio is handled criterion by letter

Three commentaries, 800 words each, 45 marks across lettered criteria. Feedback names the criterion, the band and the missing element on a draft the student has written. No competitor page in this research set names a single Economics criterion.

Paper 3 treated as its own block

The Higher Level only paper carries 30% of the grade and asks for calculation and policy judgement rather than essay writing. It gets a dedicated block with timed practice, rather than being folded into general revision in the final weeks.

The academic-honesty boundary is written down

A tutor teaches, explains the criteria and comments on the student's own drafts. Supplying text, choosing and summarising the article, or revising a draft into a submission is malpractice under IB rules, and the consequences fall on the candidate. Providers in this market sell completed coursework; that practice is refused here.

No accreditation claimed, because none is held

ADEK oversees Abu Dhabi private schools, KHDA oversees Dubai's, and the MoHRE permit governs individual tutors. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from any regulator, from the IB, or from any school or school group, and no page here will imply otherwise.

Built for the Abu Dhabi calendar

Slots run 16:30 to 20:00 Gulf Standard Time and move after Iftar during Ramadan. Plans are built backwards from the school's internal portfolio and mock deadlines, which in this emirate typically fall earlier than families expect them to.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does an hour of Higher Level Economics tuition cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Market rates for IB specialist tutoring in the UAE run roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table is the source for that band, TutorChase publishes AED 270, Unitors lists IB tuition from AED 200, and BartyED publishes AED 650 for an examiner tier. Rates advertised from AED 33 to AED 65 by Tutopiya and EdFlik are university-student or group formats rather than Higher Level specialists. The more useful question is how many hours your specific component needs, because the rate barely varies and the hours vary enormously.

Why does Paper 3 push the cost of Higher Level Economics support up?+

Because it is an extra component that exists only at Higher Level, carries 30% of the subject grade, and asks for something the other papers never ask for: calculation, shown working, and a policy recommendation built on the result. Most schools reach the material late in DP2, so students arrive at it with far less practice than they have at essays. A realistic block is six to eight sessions, which at market rates of AED 200 to AED 450 an hour is the largest single line in a Higher Level plan.

How many of the 45 portfolio marks can tutoring realistically move?+

A useful amount, because the losses concentrate in teachable places. Each commentary carries three marks for diagrams, three for application and analysis, three for the key concept, three for evaluation and two for terminology, with a further three marks for whether the portfolio meets its presentation requirements. Diagram technique and explicit key-concept application together hold six marks per commentary and are the two most mechanical things on the course to teach. Evaluation inside 800 words is harder but still trainable. The marks are moved by the student's own revision of their own draft.

Which portfolio criterion letter is worth the most per session spent?+

The key concept criterion, in most first drafts. It carries three marks per commentary and is the one students most often lose almost entirely, because they name a concept in the introduction and then write a commentary that never uses it again. Applying a concept means the analysis is organised around it throughout. That is a single session of teaching with an immediate effect on all three commentaries. Diagrams are a close second: three marks each, and a labelled diagram the text actually refers to is mechanical to produce once shown.

Is a monthly package cheaper than hourly booking for Higher Level Economics?+

Sometimes, and the comparison needs care. Packages circulating in this market run around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Check three things before comparing them with an hourly rate: the actual length of a session, whether unused sessions carry over, and whether the package tutor is a Higher Level specialist or a generalist. A package of eight generalist sessions is not cheaper than four specialist hours if the component you need repaired is Paper 3.

Can my child use UAE news articles for the portfolio commentaries?+

Yes, and local or regional material often works well because it gives the analysis something concrete to attach to. The requirements are about structure rather than geography: each commentary must use a different source, each source must be published no earlier than one year before the commentary is written, each commentary must draw on a different unit of the syllabus, and each must stay within 800 words. UAE policy stories on subsidies, housing, labour markets or trade can serve any of those units. Confirm the current rules in the subject guide your child's coordinator holds.

How much does it cost to fix diagram marks in Higher Level Economics?+

Less than almost anything else on the course, which is why it should be bought first. Two or three sessions at market rates of AED 200 to AED 450 an hour covers the mechanical work: drawing the curve correctly, labelling both axes, showing the shift rather than describing it, identifying the new equilibrium, and writing a sentence in the text that refers to the diagram. The return is unusual because diagram marks appear in Paper 1, in Paper 2 and in criterion A of every commentary, so one block pays back across three components.

Does ADEK publish anything that tells me about a school's Economics teaching?+

ADEK publishes inspection outcomes for private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and those reports describe teaching and learning quality at a whole-school and sometimes a phase level. What they will not tell you is how a particular Higher Level Economics group is doing, because an inspection band is not a subject-level measurement. For the Economics-specific picture, ask the school directly how many students are taking it at Higher Level, who teaches it, and what the internal portfolio deadlines are.

What should we budget for Higher Level Economics across two Diploma years?+

Work from Bestimate's monthly estimates rather than from an hourly rate. A single weekly hour runs AED 600 to AED 1,200 a month in the mid market and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support, and the final term usually means two hours a week rather than one. A component-led plan is cheaper: a diagram block, a portfolio block and a Paper 3 block bought in that order will cost considerably less across two years than continuous weekly support, if the student's content base is sound.

Is group Economics tuition in Abu Dhabi worth the saving?+

For shared content revision it can be, because explaining monetary policy to four students costs the same as explaining it to one. For the work that actually moves a Higher Level grade it is poor value. The repairs that matter are individual: your child's part (b) evaluation habit, your child's unused diagrams, your child's missing working in a Paper 3 calculation, your child's commentary draft. None of those survives a shared hour, and a group format cannot give criterion-referenced feedback on four different drafts at once.

Do you come to our villa in Saadiyat Island for Economics lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Every Abu Dhabi lesson is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For Economics the format is a genuine advantage: a shared screen holds the data extract, the mark scheme and a diagram being drawn and corrected live, and the annotated version is saved at the end of the session rather than disappearing into a folder.

How much of Higher Level Economics is actually quantitative?+

Enough to matter and not enough to be a barrier. Paper 3 is built around calculation, and Paper 2 includes calculation items within the data response, so a meaningful share of the Higher Level grade depends on arithmetic competence under time pressure. The arithmetic itself is accessible to any Diploma student. What separates marks is practice, and whether working is written in the form the mark scheme credits. Students taking Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation usually need transfer coaching rather than new teaching, which costs fewer hours.

Does a private Economics tutor in Abu Dhabi need a permit, and is there a fee?+

Yes to the permit and no to the fee. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without the permit carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule has been published, so distrust any specific figure. MoHRE's Private Tutor Licensing service lists a two-working-day completion time.

We are starting eight weeks before the May papers. What is realistic and what does it cost?+

At eight weeks the portfolio is submitted and those marks are fixed, so the money goes entirely into the three written papers. Expect two sessions a week rather than one, which at market rates of AED 200 to AED 450 an hour is the upper monthly band of AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above that Bestimate describes for specialist exam-year support. The highest-return work in that window is diagram technique and shown working in Paper 3 calculations, because both are mechanical. Paper 1 evaluation habits rarely change in eight weeks.

Do we pay extra if my son retakes Economics in a later session?+

Tuition and examination entry are separate costs and it is worth separating them in your planning. Entry for a retake, or for a candidate sitting outside their school, is arranged through the school or an approved examination centre and priced by the board and centre, not by any tutor. Tuition for a retake is usually a short, component-specific block rather than a repeat of the course, because the student already holds the content. Ask the school's Diploma coordinator about entry arrangements and deadlines before committing a tuition budget.

Start by naming the component

Higher Level Economics is four assessed components, and what a family spends in Abu Dhabi follows almost entirely from which of the four is broken. Diagram technique is the cheapest and returns marks in three places. The portfolio holds 45 marks and is the most teachable. Paper 3 is the Higher Level premium and deserves its own block, bought early rather than in March. Send one marked piece of work and the component it came from, take the first session at no charge, and buy the blocks in the order the diagnosis gives you.
