IB May Session Exam Preparation in Abu Dhabi

The cost of IB May session exam preparation in Abu Dhabi is mostly a function of the calendar. The same plan bought twenty weeks out sits in the middle of the published range with a choice of tutor; bought at three weeks it sits at the top with whoever is free. This page prices preparation by weeks remaining, states what cannot be bought late at any price, and shows the triage that makes a finite budget move a points total. Lessons run one-to-one on live video, on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The same plan costs different amounts depending on when you ask

Every Diploma family in Abu Dhabi becomes aware of the May session at roughly the same moment, and that moment is late. The consequence is a market where identical work carries two prices. Published rates in this emirate, read in October 2026, put a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors listing IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase quoting AED 270 for specialist work; the Bestimate survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above, and premium named listings reach AED 650 at BartyED. A family booking early transacts in the lower half of that spread with a choice of tutor. A family booking in the final weeks transacts at the top with whoever remains.

That is not a discount structure; it is supply. Higher Level mathematics, Higher Level physics and the scarcer Diploma options have a limited number of tutors in or serving this emirate, and demand for them concentrates into the same eight weeks every year. Booking early does not only cost less per hour. It buys the specific person who has taught the component that is failing, which in a final-term plan is the variable that actually determines whether anything moves.

The second thing the calendar changes is what the money can buy at all. At twenty weeks out, a genuine content gap in two subjects is addressable: there is time to teach, test, and re-test. At eight weeks, content teaching competes with technique work and technique usually wins on return. At three weeks, almost nothing that requires learning new material is purchasable, and the honest offer narrows to paper technique, timing, and the two or three repairs that are habits rather than knowledge.

The third is triage, which is the part families resist. With six subjects, three core components and a finite number of weeks, spreading effort evenly produces six marginal improvements and no change in the points total. Picking the two subjects closest to a grade boundary, and inside each the component carrying the most weight, is how a bounded budget changes a result. A plan that declines to name what it is leaving alone has not triaged; it has just promised everything.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. The cost argument runs in the family's favour and sharpens in the final weeks, because the in-home premium is a travel cost paid at the worst time of day. The Bestimate survey puts qualified in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted at AED 200-500, against AED 150-300 for comparable work online — and in a scarce-subject scramble the online pool is the only one with any depth left.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

May session preparation is a different purchase at each point in the year, and the stages before it determine how much of it is needed. These are the four an Abu Dhabi family should plan against.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

Diploma Year 1, where the cost of the final term is set

Nothing is examined and almost everything is decided. A family that uses Year 1 for periodic marked papers and for the independent components arrives at the final term with a short list of repairs. One that uses it for nothing arrives needing diagnosis and teaching in the most expensive weeks of the two-year course.

Abu Dhabi Diploma programmes set internal Internal Assessment and Extended Essay deadlines through Year 1 and into Year 2. Ask the IB coordinator for the whole schedule in writing at the start of Year 1, because the collisions that produce a final-term emergency are visible a year in advance.

AUTUMNAges 17-18 · Year 13

The autumn of Diploma Year 2, twenty weeks and more out

The cheapest point at which to buy real preparation, because content is still purchasable and the independent components are still open. Rates sit in the middle of the published range and the scarce-subject specialists are still available. Most families do not call now, which is why those specialists are still available.

Abu Dhabi school calendars put a long winter break in this stretch, and it is the most useful block in the final year: a short intensive inside it addresses a content gap in a way weekly sessions through a term cannot.

SPRINGAges 17-18 · Year 13

The spring, eight to twelve weeks out

The point at which most families call. Demand across the emirate concentrates here, scarce-subject availability thins, and the published bands harden toward their upper ends. Content teaching now competes with technique work, and technique usually wins on return per hour because the habits move faster than the knowledge.

Ramadan moves earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year, so its position relative to the final revision period shifts between examination years. Check where it falls for your child's cohort, because it changes when sessions can be held and how much output a week realistically contains.

FINALAges 17-18 · Year 13

The final three weeks and study leave

The point at which the honest offer narrows sharply. Timing, question-order strategy, command-term discipline and two or three specific repairs are purchasable. Learning a topic from nothing is not, and a provider selling it is selling reassurance. Most of what a student does in these weeks they do alone, which is a scheduling problem rather than a tutoring one.

UAE schools sit the May session. No specific IB examination or results date appears on this page, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and no date here has been confirmed from the IB directly. Confirm every date with the school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Final-term rates move by subject because supply does. These are the Diploma subjects Abu Dhabi families most often request for May session preparation, with where each sits in the published bands and why.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The most requested and least supplied Higher Level subject in this emirate, which puts it at the top of the qualified band and frequently into the specialist band of AED 200-450. Higher Level Paper 3 is the component most often booked alone, and a single-component booking is usually the cheapest useful purchase.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Better supplied than the Analysis route and priced mid-band. Statistics and modelling work suits a shared screen and a spreadsheet, so there is no quality argument for paying a travel premium on top.

Physics

HL and SL

Scarce at Higher Level and therefore priced near the top of the qualified band or above. Much of the final-term loss is mathematical rather than conceptual, which means an hour of algebra and graph linearisation often buys more marks than an hour of content at the same rate.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Reasonably supplied at both levels and mid-band. Mole fluency is the highest-return final-term repair because a weakness there costs marks across energetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry and organic yield simultaneously.

Biology

HL and SL

The best supplied of the sciences and most likely to be available at the lower end of the qualified band. The final-term work is command-term discipline and data-question technique, both of which respond to marking rather than to teaching hours.

Economics

HL and SL

Mid-band and well supplied. Diagram accuracy is the cheapest grade movement available in the subject, and Higher Level adds a third paper whose question style is worth practising separately from the other two.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Widely supplied and mid-band, and often the subject where a family can safely use fewer hours. Paper 1 guided analysis technique is the most coachable element available in the final weeks.

History and the human sciences

HL and SL

Variable supply by subject and mid-band generally. Essay-planning discipline under time is the final-term gain here: a plan written in three minutes changes the structure of an answer more than additional content recall does.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core, all candidates

By the final term these are usually submitted, which means they are no longer purchasable. Up to three Diploma points sat in them and the window closed earlier in the year. That is the clearest illustration on this page of what late booking costs.

Scarce Higher Level options

Further Mathematics, Global Politics, Music, Film, ab initio languages

Where supply is genuinely thin, availability rather than rate becomes the constraint in the final term. The honest answer is sometimes a wait with a date, a tutor outside the UAE on the same platform, or a referral elsewhere.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of final-term purchase, costed by what they actually require rather than sold as a package. Which one fits depends on the weeks remaining and on what a marked script says.

Independent re-mark and triage report

A single piece of work rather than a plan. The student's most recent mock script re-marked against the published criteria, with every lost mark assigned to content, misapplication, command term or timing, and a written report naming the two subjects worth the remaining weeks and the components to leave alone. Some families stop here.

  • Existing mock script re-marked; no new paper required
  • Loss distribution reported rather than a total
  • Two-subject shortlist with the marks behind the choice
  • One fixed piece of work with nothing continuing

Weekly component clinic in one or two subjects

Sixty minutes a week per subject on a single named component, with a timed question set between sessions and marked before the next. The hour count is stated at the outset and reviewed at the halfway point, because the point of an hour count rather than a subscription is that it can be reduced.

  • 60 minutes weekly per subject, one named component per slot
  • Timed component marked before the session, never during it
  • Stated hour count, reviewed and reducible at the midpoint
  • Published band: AED 150-300 qualified, 200-450 for a named specialist

Final-fortnight technique block

Two or three short sessions in the last weeks on the things that are still purchasable: question-order strategy, timing across a long paper, command-term discipline, and calculator or formula-booklet fluency. Explicitly not content teaching, because at that range content teaching is reassurance rather than preparation.

  • Two or three short sessions, no content teaching
  • Question order and timing rehearsed on a full paper
  • Command-term discipline enforced on the student's own answers
  • Priced as a small block, because that is what it is

01

What May session preparation costs, by weeks remaining

The useful way to price final-term preparation is not per hour but per week remaining, because the weeks determine both the rate a family will meet and what the hours can accomplish. At twenty weeks out a Diploma family in Abu Dhabi is dealing with a market that has spare capacity: the scarce-subject specialists are uncommitted, the published bands sit where they sit, and a request for Higher Level mathematics on a Tuesday evening is likely to be met.

At eight to twelve weeks the picture changes because the whole emirate's Diploma cohort arrives at once. Availability in the scarce subjects thins first, which means a family either takes a less well-matched tutor at the same rate or pays toward the upper end for one who has actually taught the component. Both of those are worse outcomes than the same booking made in the autumn, and neither is a pricing decision anybody made.

At three weeks the constraint is no longer money. A family with a generous budget and three weeks cannot buy a Higher Level physics specialist who has already committed their final-term hours, and cannot buy the time required to learn a topic from nothing. What is available is technique: question order, timing, command terms, and the specific habits that move marks within a fortnight. That is a real and worthwhile purchase, and it is a small one.

The table below prices the plan by weeks rather than by subject. Every AED figure belongs to the provider or survey that published it, read in October 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram price: a plan here is quoted against a stated hour count so that it can be held against the published bands.

02

The May session counted backwards

A backwards plan is more useful than a revision timetable, because it attaches an action to a milestone rather than a subject to a week. The milestones are the school's rather than the board's in most cases, which is why the first act is administrative: ask the IB coordinator in writing for the internal deadline schedule, the mock window, the study leave dates and the school's own revision programme.

No specific IB examination or results date appears on this page, and the reason matters. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so no session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself. Secondary sources circulate dates and some of them are wrong. UAE schools sit the May session; confirm the actual dates with the coordinator or on ibo.org, and treat any date on a tutoring page, including the absence of one here, as a reason to check rather than to assume.

What belongs on the backwards plan is a sequence of things that must already be done. Before study leave: the independent components submitted, the mock re-marked, the triage decision made. Before the mock: the specification content complete enough that the mock measures something. Before the final fortnight: the two chosen subjects' components identified and the technique work underway. Each of those has a date derived from the school's calendar rather than from a preference.

The planning error that recurs is reversing the order of cheap and expensive work. Independent-component work is early and cheap; examination technique is late and expensive. Families who do it the other way round pay weekly rates through the autumn for paper practice on content that is not finished, then discover in the spring that an Internal Assessment needs rescuing and buy that at the top of the market. Done in sequence, the autumn is a handful of block-booked core sessions and the spring is focused component work.

03

What money cannot buy in the final fortnight

  • A topic from nothing: not purchasable, and the attempt costs better hours
  • A submitted component: gone, along with the points that sat in it
  • A committed scarce-subject specialist: not created by a bigger budget
  • Purchasable and worthwhile: question order, timing, command terms, fluency

This section exists because the market does not generally publish it. In the last two or three weeks before the May session, a number of things are not purchasable at any price, and a family with a budget and anxiety is the most likely customer for them. Saying so plainly is more useful than another paragraph about intensive revision programmes.

A topic learned from nothing is not purchasable. Learning requires exposure, retrieval and time between repetitions, and three weeks shared across six subjects does not contain it. A student who has not met a Higher Level topic will not meet it usefully now, and the hour spent trying is an hour not spent on the three or four topics they half know, which are the ones where marks are actually available.

A submitted component is not purchasable. Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay are gone, and with them up to three Diploma points that were available for work already on the timetable. This is the single clearest cost of late booking anywhere in the Diploma, and it is invisible because nothing announces it.

A committed specialist is not purchasable. In scarce subjects the final-term hours of the tutors who have actually taught the failing component are allocated by the spring, and a generous budget does not create more of them. What a family can buy late is a competent tutor who has not taught that specific paper, which is a different and lesser product and should be described as such. What is purchasable late, and worth buying, is technique: question order, timing across a long paper, command-term discipline, formula-booklet and calculator fluency, and two or three named habit repairs.

04

Triage: two subjects, and the ones you name as left alone

A Diploma student has six subjects and a finite number of final-term hours, and the arithmetic of spreading those hours is unforgiving. Twelve hours divided across six subjects is two hours each, which changes nothing anywhere. Twelve hours divided across two subjects, aimed at the component carrying the most weight in each, can move two grades. The second plan is better and it requires saying out loud which four subjects are not getting hours.

The selection rule is weight times distance from the boundary, not perceived weakness. A subject the student dislikes but is comfortably passing at the target grade does not need hours. A subject they are confident in but sitting a mark below a boundary does. The marked mock, re-marked against the published criteria and broken down by component, is what produces that ranking, and a school report cannot because it compresses the components into one number.

The second rule is within-subject. Having chosen two subjects, choose one component in each. A paper carrying forty-four per cent of a science grade is worth more attention than one carrying thirty-six, and a Higher Level third paper carrying twenty per cent is worth a dedicated block if it is the component being abandoned mid-question. Working across a whole subject in the final term is a diluted version of the same spreading error, one level down.

The uncomfortable part is that triage sometimes identifies a subject as beyond reach in the time available, and the honest plan accepts that and reallocates. A student thirty marks below a boundary in one subject and two marks below in another should be spending their hours on the second. Saying so is not pessimism; it is the difference between a plan and a wish, and a provider unwilling to say it is selling hours rather than advice.

THE TRIAGE DECISION, WORKED THROUGH

Abu Dhabi specifics: study leave, Ramadan and who may be paid

Three local variables change a final-term plan in this emirate and none of them appears on a generic revision page. The first is study leave. Abu Dhabi schools set their own arrangements and they differ, and the structure of a student's day changes completely once it begins: the constraint shifts from available hours to the ability to use them without a timetable. Ask the coordinator for the study leave dates early, because a plan built on school-day evenings stops fitting on the first day of leave.

The second is Ramadan. Its position in the Gregorian calendar moves earlier each year, so where it falls relative to the final revision period differs between examination cohorts. Check where it falls for your child's year rather than assuming. Where it overlaps revision, sessions move to post-Iftar times, written output per week drops, and a plan that assumed a constant weekly rate will not hold. That is manageable when it is planned and disruptive when it is discovered.

The third is who may be paid to help. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and teachers tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. That is press-reported rather than read from ADEK's current policy document, so verify it against the authority's own publication; the practical point is that the most convenient arrangement a parent might imagine may not be permitted.

Abu Dhabi's private schools are regulated by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK is named by none of the competitor pages found in this research. Separately, private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years through MoHRE's own 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing' service with a stated two-working-day completion time; because it is free, no provider can justify a charge on licensing grounds, and tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws with no published fine schedule.

06

Online against in-home in a final term

  • Published in-home band AED 180-500 against AED 150-300 online
  • The commute costs the premium and the student's scarcest hours
  • In a spring scramble the local pool is the smallest version of the market
  • Presence for a distractible student is a supervision problem, priced separately

The published numbers in this market run one way and the final term sharpens the argument rather than softening it. The Bestimate survey puts qualified in-home one-to-one in Abu Dhabi at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted at AED 200-500 and monthly in-home packages advertised at AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour visits, against AED 150-300 for comparable work online. The gap pays for a commute.

In the final weeks that commute costs twice. It costs the premium, and it costs the student's own time at the point in the year when their hours are scarcest: a tutor arriving at six who leaves at seven-thirty has consumed more of the evening than the lesson used. Families in Khalifa City, Al Reef or Al Shamkha pay the largest version of both costs, because distance from the central tutoring clusters sets the premium.

The second final-term argument is depth of pool. In a scramble for Higher Level mathematics or Higher Level physics in the spring, the local in-home pool is the smallest version of the market available, and restricting a search to drivable distance at precisely the moment supply is tightest is the decision most likely to produce a mismatched tutor. Online widens the pool across the region, which in scarce subjects is the only thing that matters.

What in-home genuinely buys is presence for a student who cannot stay on task alone, and in study leave that is a real consideration rather than a marketing line. The honest version is that attention management is a scheduling and supervision problem a family can solve more cheaply than at AED 350 an hour, and that it is worth separating from the question of who teaches the component. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service, and UAE lessons run one-to-one on live video.

07

What to refuse in the final term

A promised points total. Grade boundaries are determined after a session on the basis of candidate performance across the whole cohort, so the mark needed for a given grade is not knowable while the teaching is happening. Any provider offering a specific points total, a specific lift, or money back on a result is describing a sales position rather than how awarding works. What can honestly be committed to is a marked component after every session and a stated hour count that can be reduced.

Anything involving submitted work. Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay are finished by the final term, and an offer to improve or revisit one is either useless or a route to a malpractice finding. The market in this region sells written coursework: one UAE-facing site advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. In the final term that purchase has no upside at all and the downside is the Diploma.

Unevidenced examiner claims at a premium. 'Examiner' is used loosely in this market and it sells well in the final weeks. Ask for evidence of current status, and note that examiner experience provides no access to marking in progress, to grade boundaries or to unseen paper content; a provider implying otherwise is describing something that would be a serious problem rather than a benefit. What an experienced marker genuinely offers is calibration against the published criteria, available well below the premium band.

An intensive package sold by the week. The honest final-term purchase is a stated number of hours aimed at named components, reviewable and reducible. A package priced by week has an incentive to fill the weeks, and in the last fortnight filling the weeks means content teaching that cannot work. Ask for the hour count, the components it addresses, and what the provider says is not worth buying at this range. The answer to the last question is the most informative thing in any final-term quote.

08

Results, remarks and the November question

A final-term plan should include the decision that follows the session, written before it. When results arrive, three routes exist and the criteria for each should already be on paper: accept the result, request a remark where a grade sits narrowly below a boundary and the marked evidence suggests technique rather than content loss, or consider a retake. Deciding criteria in advance converts an emotional week into an arithmetic question.

Remarks and retakes both have deadlines close behind results, and both are administered through the school rather than by a family or a tutor. A remark is a route worth considering for a borderline grade, because it can move a result without another term of work, but it is a review of marking rather than a second chance at the paper. Ask the coordinator what the school's process and timing are, before results rather than after.

The November session exists as a retake route, and the honest framing is that it suits a specific case: one subject, missed narrowly, where the loss was in a component that responds to a short block of work, and where the grade actually matters for the next step. Retaking a subject not required for the intended destination is a term spent for a better-looking certificate. No specific IB session or results date appears here because none has been confirmed from the IB; the coordinator holds the dates.

Costing the decision is simple and worth doing in advance. A single consultation reading the marked evidence and advising on remark against retake is one or two hours at the published qualified band of AED 150-300. A retake block is six to eight weeks on one subject, roughly twelve to sixteen hours. Both are small purchases. What makes them cheap is having decided the criteria in the spring rather than in the week the results arrive.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Online delivery means the rate does not move with the postcode. What the area changes is the in-home quote a family is weighing and how much of the final weeks disappears into travel.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

Villa communities where the in-home premium is largest because of driving distance, and where a student loses an hour each way to the school run. In the final weeks that hour is the scarcest thing a family has, which makes the online comparison starker here than anywhere else.

Al Reem Island and Al Maryah

Short commutes and a denser in-home market, so the travel premium is narrower. Even so the published in-home band sits above the online one, and tower access adds unbilled time at both ends of a session.

Saadiyat Island

A small number of schools with mature Diploma programmes, which means local demand for the same specialists spikes in the same fortnight. Booking in the autumn saves more here in availability terms than in rate terms.

Yas Island and Al Zeina

Growing communities with substantial internal travel to school. Study leave changes the arithmetic in these areas more than most, because once a student is home all day the constraint becomes structure rather than time.

Al Bateen, Al Mushrif and the Corniche

Established schools with long-running Diploma cohorts and well-published study leave arrangements. Families here usually know the school's final-term calendar, which makes a backwards plan straightforward to build.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Longer commutes and a wide curricular mix. Travel quotes to this corridor sit at the higher end of the in-home range, which in a final term where every hour counts is a poor trade.

Al Reef, Al Shamkha and Al Ain

Greater distances and, in Al Ain, a separate school ecosystem under the same emirate regulator. For scarce Higher Level subjects the local pool is effectively nil, which makes online delivery the only route rather than the cheaper one.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi island and Saadiyat Diploma provision

Live video with the matched tutor, no card details taken, no obligation. In the final term it is spent on the script rather than on introductions: one question re-marked live against the published criteria so the standard being applied is visible before any figure is agreed.

  3. 03

Independent re-mark and the triage report

The mock re-marked to the published criteria with every lost mark assigned to content, misapplication, command term or timing, and a written report naming the two subjects worth the remaining weeks and the four that are not. Some families stop at this report, which is a reasonable outcome.

  4. 04

A plan with a stated hour count

The plan names the components, the number of sessions on each, the total hours and the total cost, so it can be held against the published bands on this page. It also names what is being left alone, because a plan that covers everything covers nothing properly.

  5. 05

Review and reduce at the halfway point

Mid-plan the marked evidence is re-read. Where a component has stabilised the sessions stop rather than continuing by default. An hour count exists so that it can be cut; a monthly subscription is designed so that it cannot.

  6. 06

Write the results-day criteria before the session

Which subjects would justify a remark request, which would justify a November retake, and which would justify neither — decided in the spring from marked evidence. One or two hours of consultation then, and an arithmetic decision instead of a panic in August.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Priced by weeks, not just by hour

The same plan costs differently at twenty weeks and at three, and the difference is supply rather than policy. Stating that lets a family capture the largest saving available in the final year, which costs nothing but a calendar.

What cannot be bought late is named

A topic from nothing, a submitted component, a committed specialist. A family with a budget and three weeks is the most likely customer for all three, and no page in this market publishes the limitation. Naming it is more useful than another intensive programme.

Triage names what is left alone

Two subjects, one component in each, and four subjects explicitly not getting hours. Spreading twelve hours across six subjects changes nothing anywhere, and a plan unwilling to say which four are excluded has not triaged.

Hours are stated and reducible

A quote attaches to a number of sessions and a total, reviewed at the halfway point and cut where the evidence says the hours are no longer needed. That is a different product from a package priced by the week with an incentive to fill them.

Local variables built in

Study leave changes the structure of a student's day, Ramadan's position shifts between cohorts and changes weekly output, and ADEK's ethics rules restrict who may be paid to help. None of those appears on a generic revision page.

The results decision written in advance

Remark criteria and retake criteria decided in the spring from marked evidence, so August is arithmetic rather than panic. One or two hours of consultation then is cheaper and better than a decision made in the week the results land.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much does May session preparation cost in Abu Dhabi?+

It depends more on when you ask than on what you buy. Published rates read in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors listing IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase quoting AED 270 for specialist work; the Bestimate survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above, and premium named listings reach AED 650. A family booking in the autumn transacts in the lower half of that spread with a choice of tutor. A family booking in the final weeks transacts at the top with whoever is free, which is supply rather than a pricing policy.

Why does booking late cost more for Diploma revision?+

Because the whole emirate's Diploma cohort becomes aware of the session at roughly the same moment. Higher Level mathematics, Higher Level physics and the scarcer options have a limited number of tutors serving this emirate, and demand for them concentrates into the same eight weeks every year. By the spring the specialists who have actually taught a failing component have committed their final-term hours. A later booking therefore costs more per hour and buys a less well-matched person, and neither of those is a decision anybody made deliberately.

What can a tutor not fix three weeks before IB exams?+

Three things, and a family with a budget and anxiety is the most likely customer for all of them. A topic learned from nothing, because learning needs exposure, retrieval and time between repetitions that three weeks across six subjects does not contain. A submitted component — Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay, the Theory of Knowledge essay — which is gone along with the points that sat in it. And a committed specialist in a scarce subject, whose final-term hours a larger budget does not create. What is purchasable is technique, and it is worth buying.

What is worth buying in the last fortnight before the May session?+

Technique, in a small block. Question-order strategy, so a student does not spend twenty minutes on a question worth four marks. Timing across a long paper, which is untested until a full paper has been sat under conditions. Command-term discipline, which recovers marks across several subjects simultaneously because the habit is subject-independent. Formula-booklet and calculator fluency, which is pure mechanics. Two or three short sessions covers it. Anything sold as intensive content teaching at this range is reassurance rather than preparation, and it displaces the work that could still move marks.

Should final-term hours be spread across all six Diploma subjects?+

No, and the arithmetic is unforgiving. Twelve hours divided across six subjects is two hours each, which changes nothing anywhere. Twelve hours divided across two subjects, aimed at the component carrying the most weight in each, can move two grades and therefore the points total. The selection rule is weight times distance from a boundary rather than perceived weakness: a disliked subject comfortably at target needs nothing, while a confident subject sitting a mark below a boundary needs attention. A plan unwilling to name the four subjects it excludes has not triaged.

How do I decide which two subjects get the hours?+

From a mock script re-marked against the published criteria and broken down by component, not from a school report. The report compresses components into one number and therefore cannot rank anything. The re-mark produces the two numbers that matter: how far each subject sits from the target boundary, and which component within it is carrying the loss. Then apply the honest rule, including the uncomfortable part — a subject thirty marks below a boundary should lose its hours to one sitting two marks below, however unfair that feels.

Does study leave change how an Abu Dhabi student should use a tutor?+

Yes, substantially, and it is worth planning for before it begins. Once study leave starts the constraint shifts from available hours to the ability to use them without a timetable, and a plan built on school-day evenings stops fitting on the first day. Sessions can move to mornings, which is generally better for timed-paper work, and the useful function of a tutor changes toward external structure and measurement. Ask the IB coordinator for the study leave dates early, because they differ between schools in the emirate.

How does Ramadan affect May session revision in Abu Dhabi?+

Its position in the Gregorian calendar moves earlier each year, so where it falls relative to the final revision period differs between examination cohorts. Check where it falls for your child's year rather than assuming. Where it overlaps revision, sessions move to post-Iftar times, written output per week drops, and a plan that assumed a constant weekly rate will not hold. That is entirely manageable when it has been planned for and disruptive when it is discovered mid-plan, which is the only real argument for building the calendar first.

Is a home tutor better than online for final-term Diploma revision?+

The published numbers run one way and the final term sharpens the argument. The Bestimate survey puts qualified in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted at AED 200-500, against AED 150-300 online. The commute costs the premium and also the student's scarcest hours, since a tutor arriving at six and leaving at seven-thirty has consumed more than the lesson used. In a spring scramble for a scarce subject, the local in-home pool is also the smallest version of the market. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service.

Can anyone promise a Diploma points total for the May session?+

No, and the reason is structural rather than cautious. Grade boundaries are determined after a session on the basis of candidate performance across the whole cohort, so the mark required for a given grade is not knowable while the teaching is happening. A provider offering a specific points total, a specific lift in marks or money back on a result is describing a sales position. What can honestly be committed to is a marked component after every session, written feedback on the student's own work, and a stated hour count that can be reduced if the evidence says so.

Is a premium examiner-badged tutor worth it close to the exams?+

Only with evidence, and not for the reason it is usually sold. 'Examiner' is applied loosely across this market and it sells particularly well in the final weeks. Ask for demonstrable current status, and note that examiner experience provides no access to marking in progress, to grade boundaries or to unseen paper content — a provider implying otherwise is describing something that would be a serious problem rather than a benefit. What an experienced marker genuinely offers is calibration against the published criteria, which is available well below the premium band.

What should a Diploma family have done by the autumn of Year 13?+

Four things, and all of them are cheaper in the autumn than later. The independent components either submitted or on track, because those carry up to three points and close permanently. A mock or timed paper re-marked so the triage decision has evidence behind it. The two chosen subjects identified with their components. And the scarce-subject tutor booked, because that booking is the one that cannot be made later at any price. Together those cost a handful of hours and they determine the price and the usefulness of everything in the spring.

What are the options when results do not match expectations?+

Three, and the criteria for each should be written down in the spring rather than decided in the week they arrive. Accept the result. Request a remark, which is worth considering where a grade sits narrowly below a boundary and the marked evidence pointed to technique rather than content loss — though a remark reviews the marking rather than offering a second attempt at the paper. Or consider a retake in the November session. All three are administered through the school, with deadlines close behind results, so ask the coordinator for the process before results rather than after.

When is a November retake worth the cost?+

In a specific case: one subject, missed narrowly, where the loss sat in a component that responds to a short block of work, and where the grade actually matters for the next step. Retaking a subject not required for the intended destination is a term spent for a better-looking certificate. Costed, a retake block is six to eight weeks on one subject, roughly twelve to sixteen hours at the published qualified band of AED 150-300. The decision itself is one or two hours of consultation, and it is cheapest when the criteria were agreed months earlier.

What if no tutor is free for our subject this close to the May session?+

You should be told, with the options named rather than a substitute quietly supplied. Scarce requests concentrate in the spring: Higher Level Further Mathematics, a specific third paper, a minority language at ab initio level. The honest choices are a wait with a date attached, a tutor based outside the UAE delivering on the same live video platform and on Gulf Standard Time, or a referral elsewhere. A specialist rate charged for someone who has not taught the component is the thing to refuse. No competitor page found in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Count the weeks before you compare the rates

An hourly rate means little in a final term without the number of weeks beside it. Twenty weeks out, a content gap in two subjects is addressable at the middle of the published range with a choice of tutor. Three weeks out, the honest offer is a short technique block and nothing more, whatever the budget. Send the subject list, the weeks remaining and the most recent marked mock, take the free 30-minute trial lesson, and ask for a plan with a stated hour count plus a written list of what the provider says is not worth buying at your range.
