IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What the single award certifies, and what it quietly leaves out

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653 is one course covering biology, chemistry and physics, producing a single grade. That sentence is the whole of the confusion. Families see three sciences on the syllabus and assume three qualifications, or see one grade and assume a reduced subject. Neither is right. It is one IGCSE whose content is drawn from all three disciplines at a reduced depth, and it occupies one subject slot on a timetable where separate sciences would occupy three.

The reduction is real and worth being specific about. Compared with separate biology, chemistry and physics, the single award carries less stoichiometry, a lighter organic chemistry section, fewer of the quantitative physics relationships, and less of the detailed physiology. It keeps the whole structure of each discipline: the particle model, the reactivity series, the energy stores, cells and transport, electricity and circuits. A student on 0653 is not studying different science. They are studying the same science with less of it.

That makes 0653 a sensible placement in several situations and a problem in one. It suits a student carrying a heavy option block, a student who arrived mid-course and has ground to make up, and a student whose interests sit elsewhere. It becomes a problem only where somebody intends to continue a science past Year 11 and nobody has checked what the sixth form expects, because a single grade covers all three subjects at once and cannot demonstrate strength in one of them.

Where the marks go is a separate question, and here the answers are predictable enough to plan around. Across marked 0653 papers the chemistry arithmetic and the physics relationships take more than their share, while biology losses are usually about diagrams, named structures and the precision of a definition rather than about understanding. That split matters because it means a session spent on biology revision generally returns less than a session spent on the chemistry calculations, whatever the student believes about which strand is hardest.

There is a scheduling point behind all of this that applies specifically to this emirate. Private schools in the UAE teach Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside their own curriculum as part of the federal baseline, and those subjects carry homework that lands on the same evenings as everything else. A student on the single award is carrying one science subject rather than three, which is often exactly why the school placed them there. A tutoring plan that then tries to run three strands in parallel across one weekly hour recreates the load the placement was meant to remove, and it is the most common way a year of science support achieves very little.

IB Gram matches Abu Dhabi families to a tutor who teaches this syllabus and delivers it one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, around the school week. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For a course spanning three disciplines that is a practical advantage, because the constraint is finding somebody who can carry all three strands properly, and that person does not have to live in your community.

At a glance

  • One IGCSE grade, drawn from biology, chemistry and physics together
  • Content is reduced in depth, not different in kind
  • Occupies one timetable slot where separate sciences take three
  • Chemistry arithmetic and physics relationships lose the most marks
  • Biology losses are usually precision and diagrams, not comprehension
  • A single grade cannot show strength in one named science

The decision that produced a 0653 set placement usually involved two or three alternatives, and Abu Dhabi families often want those laid out before they commit to a tutoring plan. These are the routes that sit alongside it.

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science

A single award covering all three sciences and producing one grade, with Core and Extended tiers and a practical component. The content keeps the structure of each discipline while reducing depth, particularly in quantitative chemistry and in the more mathematical physics. Candidates sit a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper at their tier, and a practical component, with the exact structure set out in the current syllabus.

Across Abu Dhabi this route is widely used, often as the default for a year group with separate sciences reserved for students intending to continue them. Which route applies to your child was a departmental decision, and the head of science can explain the reasoning behind a particular set placement.

Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences

The double award covering the same three disciplines in greater depth and producing two grades. It takes more curriculum time than the single award, sits between combined and separate sciences in content, and is the usual step up where a department wants broader coverage without timetabling three subjects.

Several schools in the emirate run the coordinated route for most of a year group. Where a family is comparing it with the single award, the question for the department is how much additional timetable time it requires and whether the student is carrying that load alongside their other option choices.

Separate Cambridge biology, chemistry and physics

Three distinct IGCSEs with three grades, each going considerably further than the single award and each with its own practical component. This is the route sixth forms most often expect from students intending to study a science at Advanced Level, though requirements vary and should be read rather than assumed.

In Abu Dhabi the larger British-curriculum science departments offer this route, usually on the island and in the Khalifa City corridor. Students in a combined set who want to move to separate sciences need the conversation early, because the timetable consequences run across both years.

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

The programme many Abu Dhabi students arrive from, assessed against criteria covering knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Students moving from it into an examined syllabus are often strong at investigation and less practised at the timed recall an IGCSE paper requires.

The emirate has a substantial Middle Years Programme population, and the move into Year 10 examined science is a recognised pressure point. A first marked 0653 paper usually shows it clearly: good scientific reasoning, thin precision under time.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below is the 0653 content as a tutor plans sessions around it, strand by strand. Each entry names the specific place marks go missing, because the pattern differs sharply between the three disciplines.

Characteristics and classification of living organisms

Core and Extended

Life processes, the main groups of organisms and the use of keys. Marks are lost on definitions given loosely: nutrition, excretion and respiration each have a required form of words, and a student who paraphrases collects part marks.

Cells, movement into and out of cells

Core and Extended

Cell structures and their functions, diffusion and osmosis. The common loss is explaining osmosis without naming water potential or a partially permeable membrane, which is where the marks are actually attached.

Nutrition, enzymes and digestion

Core and Extended

Enzyme action, the effects of temperature and pH, and the human digestive system. Students describe the graph of enzyme activity and forget that denaturation is about a change in the shape of the active site, which is the creditable detail.

Transport and respiration

Core and Extended

Transport in plants and the human circulatory system, aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Diagram labelling carries several marks, and students who learn the structures without their positions lose them on a labelled figure.

Coordination, reproduction and inheritance

Core and Extended

Nervous and hormonal coordination, reproduction, and the basics of inheritance with genetic diagrams. Genetic crosses need the parental genotypes written out and the gametes shown, not simply the ratio of outcomes.

Organisms and their environment

Core and Extended

Food chains and webs, energy flow, nutrient cycles and human effects on ecosystems. Short, predictable question types, and one of the fastest areas in which to recover marks late in a revision programme.

Particles, atoms and bonding

Core and Extended

States of matter, atomic structure, ionic and covalent bonding. Explaining a physical property requires reference to the structure, so a high melting point answer needs strong forces between oppositely charged ions rather than simply strong bonds.

Chemical reactions and arithmetic

Core and Extended

Formulae, equations, reacting masses and the reduced stoichiometry this award carries. This is where the single-award candidate most reliably loses marks, usually by attempting a multi-step problem without first taking the ratio from the balanced equation.

Acids, bases, salts and the Periodic Table

Core and Extended

Acid reactions, neutralisation, pH, and group trends with their explanations. The trends themselves are a mark each; the explanation attached to each trend is where the rest of the marks sit and where answers go vague.

Metals, reactivity and the environment

Core and Extended

The reactivity series, displacement, corrosion, and atmospheric pollutants with their sources and effects. Heavily recall-based, which makes it reliable revision for a student short of time or working through a shortened school day.

Motion, forces and energy

Core and Extended

Speed and acceleration, resultant forces, energy stores and transfers, work and power. Losses are generally unit handling and the failure to name where energy went, since energy is lost scores nothing on its own.

Thermal physics, waves and sound

Core and Extended

Conduction, convection and radiation, wave properties, reflection and refraction. Description marks require a particle-level mechanism, and diagram marks require the normal, the arrows and the labels regardless of whether the geometry is right.

Electricity, circuits and magnetism

Core and Extended

Current, potential difference, resistance, series and parallel circuits, and magnetic effects. The largest block of physics marks in the award and the one most often revised, so losses here tend to be circuit reading and arithmetic rather than concept.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements cover almost every single-award request from this emirate, all delivered one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. They differ in how many of the three strands the hours are spread across.

One strand at a time

The arrangement most families end up with. Lost marks are counted by strand on a real paper, the weakest is taken first, and the sessions stay on it until the count moves. Spreading an hour a week across three disciplines produces three shallow conversations, which is why this is the default here.

  • Strand chosen from a mark count, not from the student's preference
  • Stays on one discipline until a comparable paper shows movement
  • Short written work set between sessions and marked before the next
  • Usually four to six sessions per strand

Calculation and arithmetic repair

A targeted block on the quantitative content that the single award still carries: reacting masses, the physics relationships, unit handling and rearrangement. This is where most 0653 candidates lose their largest block of marks, and it is also the work that improves both the chemistry and the physics strands at once.

  • Multi-step problems from the start, never single conversions
  • Units written at every line rather than added at the end
  • Rearrangement practised separately from the science
  • Benefits two strands from the same hours

Weekly support across the course

A fixed weekly hour running slightly behind the school's scheme of work, consolidating whichever strand the class is currently teaching. It suits families who want continuity across Year 10 and Year 11 rather than a repair job in the final months.

  • One protected slot each week in Gulf Standard Time
  • A record of which strands have been tested and what was scored
  • Deliberate pauses for internal assessment weeks and travel
  • Timings reviewed for Ramadan rather than improvised

One grade, three sciences: comparing the routes honestly

The first thing a family on this page usually needs is a straight comparison, because the three routes are often explained to them in the language of ability rather than the language of timetabling. The single award gives one grade from one subject slot. The coordinated double award gives two grades from a larger slice of curriculum time. Separate sciences give three grades from three slots. The depth of content rises across that sequence, and so does the number of hours the school has to find.

What nobody can tell you from a content list is what a particular Abu Dhabi sixth form will accept. Entry requirements for Advanced Level sciences are set school by school, and they vary. Some will consider a strong single-award grade for one science; others expect the separate qualification. That question has a definite answer and the head of sixth form holds it, which makes it a far better use of an afternoon than reading comparisons online.

The table below sets out the three routes with what each certifies and what to ask about each. Read the last column as the actionable part. A family that walks into a meeting with the department asking those four questions will get a clearer picture in twenty minutes than any tutoring page can provide, including this one.

Our own position is narrow and worth stating. We teach the syllabus your child is entered for. We do not advise on set placement, we cannot change an entry, and we have no view on whether a school's decision was right, because we have not seen the evidence the department has. What we can do is count the lost marks and tell you which strand is costing them.

Biology in 0653: precision, diagrams and definitions

  • Definitions carry required clauses, not just the right idea
  • Practise labelling on unfamiliar versions of familiar diagrams
  • Genetic crosses are marked on the written structure, not the answer
  • Precision problems are quicker to fix than conceptual ones

The biology strand produces a particular kind of script. Students understand the material, write fluently about it, and lose marks on precision. A definition of osmosis that does not mention a partially permeable membrane, a description of enzyme denaturation that does not mention the shape of the active site, an explanation of transpiration that describes the movement without naming the driving process: each of these is a good answer missing the creditable clause.

Diagram marks compound this. Labelled figures appear across the strand, and they reward knowing where a structure sits as well as what it does. A student who has learned the parts of the heart as a list often cannot label them on an unfamiliar diagram, and a student who has learned the leaf cross-section from one textbook image is thrown by a different orientation. Practising on unfamiliar versions of the same figure is the whole fix, and it takes a session.

Genetic crosses are the other reliable loss. The marks sit on the written structure: parental genotypes stated, gametes shown, the grid or cross completed, and the ratio read off with the phenotypes named. Students who can predict the outcome and write only the ratio lose most of the question. This is a presentational habit identical to the one that costs marks in mathematics, and it responds to the same treatment.

Because these are precision problems rather than comprehension problems, the biology strand is usually the cheapest of the three to improve. That is worth knowing when a family has four sessions to spend and a student who insists biology is their weakest subject. The mark count generally disagrees, and where it agrees, the work is quick.

03

Chemistry in 0653: reduced content, unchanged arithmetic

  • Reduced content keeps the arithmetic that causes most losses
  • Ratios come from the balanced equation before any calculation
  • Group trends and pollutant lists are exact recall and reliable marks
  • Property explanations are sentence shapes, not fresh reasoning

The chemistry inside the single award carries less stoichiometry than the separate syllabus and a lighter organic section, but what remains is still arithmetic, and arithmetic is where this strand loses marks. Reacting masses, formulae, balancing and the handling of units all survive the reduction. A student who was never fluent at taking a ratio from a balanced equation finds that the reduced content has removed the parts they could do and kept the part they could not.

The recall half of the chemistry is more forgiving and frequently neglected. Group trends with their explanations, the reactivity series, acid reactions, atmospheric pollutants with their sources and effects: all of this is learnable as precise lists, and all of it appears reliably. For a student short of time this is the better purchase, because a list taught in one session and tested cold the following week stays learned.

Explaining properties from structure is the third category and the one that sits between the other two. High melting points, electrical conductivity, the behaviour of giant structures: each has a sentence shape that earns the mark, and paraphrasing it does not. These are not concepts to be understood freshly in the examination room. They are forms of words, and handing a student the right form of words is a legitimate and useful thing for a tutor to do.

In practice the chemistry strand gets split in a plan. The arithmetic goes into spaced work across weeks, because fluency does not compress. The lists and the sentence shapes go into concentrated sessions, often placed deliberately in weeks when the school day is shortened and longer work is harder to schedule.

04

Physics in 0653: relationships, units and the formulae that stay

The physics strand is examined on a smaller set of quantitative relationships than the separate syllabus, which makes it tractable. Speed and acceleration, density, resultant force, work, power, efficiency, the wave equation and the circuit relationships cover a large share of the calculation marks available. A student who can identify which relationship a question wants and substitute carefully will collect most of them.

Unit handling costs more marks here than anywhere else in the award. Kilometres per hour converted at the end rather than the beginning, centimetres left in a density calculation, a frequency in kilohertz used directly in the wave equation: each produces an answer wrong by a clean factor with working that otherwise deserved credit. Writing units at every line, rather than adding them to the final answer, removes most of this, and it is a habit installed in one session.

The description side of the physics strand follows the same rules as the separate syllabus. Thermal transfer answers need a particle-level mechanism. Energy answers must name where the energy went rather than saying it was lost. Ray diagrams need the normal drawn, arrows on the rays and labels present. Students lose these marks while being perfectly able to explain the physics aloud, which is why written practice is the only thing that changes the outcome.

The practical component draws on the same conventions across all three strands: units in the table heading, consistent precision down a column, a line of best fit that is not obliged to pass through the origin, a specific source of error and an improvement that addresses that error. Those conventions are taught in a session and they pay in every practical question thereafter.

05

Where a single-award candidate's marks actually go

A single grade across three disciplines hides the thing a family most needs to see, which is that the losses are not evenly spread. On a marked 0653 paper the pattern is usually consistent: the largest block sits in the quantitative chemistry and physics, a second block sits in description answers across all three strands, and the biology losses are precision rather than content. A student who is told only their percentage cannot act on any of that.

Counting is therefore the first session's work. Each lost mark is attributed to a strand and to a type, and the resulting table almost always surprises the student. Children are reliable reporters of what they find uncomfortable and unreliable reporters of where they are losing marks, because discomfort attaches to difficulty and marks attach to precision. Those two things are different, and the count settles the argument without anybody having to win it.

The practical value is in what it rules out. A count showing eighty per cent of losses in chemistry arithmetic means the four sessions available should not be spent on a general science review, however much more comfortable that would feel. A count showing losses evenly spread across description answers in all three strands means the right work is written answers and command words, which improves everything at once.

Where the count genuinely shows large content gaps across all three strands with weeks remaining, we say so plainly. That is the situation in which more sessions cannot do what the family is hoping for, and the honest advice is to prioritise the recall-heavy areas for marks per hour rather than attempt to cover a syllabus.

Moving between the science routes, and when it is still possible

Families frequently want to know whether a change is available: up from the single award to the coordinated double award, or across to separate sciences. The honest answer is that it depends less on the student than on the calendar and the timetable. A change of route usually means a change of teaching group, a different scheme of work already partly delivered, and an entry that may already have been made with the board.

Cambridge entries close months before the papers are sat. For an Abu Dhabi candidate that means a June sitting is settled while the spring term is still running and a November sitting over the summer, with the exact deadline reaching the family through the centre's statement of entry rather than from any public page. A conversation about moving route once the spring term is under way is therefore an administrative one, and the department may have very limited room to act on it. The autumn is when it is a real conversation, and a parent who raises it then is asking a teaching question rather than a paperwork one.

There is also a content problem that nobody raises early enough. Moving up a route mid-year means arriving in a group that has already covered material the student has never met, and the gap is not evenly spread: the quantitative chemistry and the additional physics are typically the parts missing. Where a family is considering it, the useful preparation is to audit which topics the receiving set has already taught, which the head of science can supply in a list.

Our role in this is limited and we would rather say so. We can teach the content gap once a school has agreed to a change, and we can mark work that demonstrates readiness. We cannot enter a candidate, advise a department on a set placement, or tell you what your school will agree to.

How a set placement is usually decided in Abu Dhabi

  • Set placement follows staffing, laboratories and option blocks as much as attainment
  • Ask how many separate science sets run and what criteria were applied
  • Ask whether there is a review point during the year
  • A marked script moves a department; an opinion does not

Set placement feels personal to a family and is usually structural. A department has a certain number of science teachers, a certain number of laboratory periods, and a year group of a certain size with option choices already made. The number of separate science sets it can staff follows from that, and students are allocated on prior attainment, option block compatibility and sometimes simply on which block their other choices sit in.

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and publishes inspection outcomes on a banded scale. Those reports describe provision across a whole school and will not tell you why your child is in a particular science set. For that, the questions worth asking are how many separate science sets run this year, what criteria were used, whether a review point exists during the year, and what the sixth form expects from a single-award candidate.

It is also worth asking what the award actually was designed for in that school's plan. Many departments use the single award deliberately so that students carrying a demanding set of options can still certificate in science without three examination subjects, and that is a reasonable piece of curriculum design rather than a judgement. Understanding the intention changes the conversation from a complaint into a plan.

Where a family concludes that the placement is wrong, the evidence that moves a department is a marked script rather than a strongly held view. That is the same evidence a tutor works from, which is why the first session produces something you can take to a meeting, whether or not any further sessions are bought.

08

What one tutor across three sciences can honestly do

  • Single-award depth is coverable by one well-prepared science teacher
  • Working from the mark count matters more than breadth of subject knowledge
  • Apparatus handling belongs to the school, and we say so
  • No grade promises, and no board material redistributed as downloads

It is a fair question whether a single tutor can cover biology, chemistry and physics properly, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you are asking them to do. At the depth the single award requires, a well-prepared science teacher can teach all three strands and mark them against the scheme. At separate-science Extended depth, the same claim would be thinner, which is why we match differently for 0610, 0620 and 0625 pages than for this one.

What matters more than breadth is whether the tutor works from the mark count. A tutor who asks the student which science they find hardest and then teaches that one is doing the thing that feels helpful. A tutor who counts the losses, reports that four fifths of them are in the chemistry arithmetic, and then stays on that until a comparable paper moves is doing the thing that works. The second is unglamorous and it is the whole value of the hour.

There are also things a session cannot do, and naming them is part of an honest arrangement. Apparatus handling for a laboratory practical test belongs to the school. Submitted assessed work, where any course requires it, stays the student's own from first line to last, and a tutor comments on reasoning the student has written rather than producing material for them. Official syllabuses, past papers and mark schemes are the boards' copyright: we cite them and link to them rather than redistributing them.

And no grade is promised. A single award result depends on papers sat under timed conditions on particular mornings and on thresholds set after the series by the board. What can be committed to is the process: a mark count from a real script, one strand worked at a time, written work marked against the scheme wording, and a plain statement when the evidence says a plan is not working.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

The single award is taught across the whole emirate, and what differs between communities is the hour available and the schools nearby. These notes are about when a session can realistically run rather than about geography.

Al Shamkha

A large mainland community with long journeys to island schools. By the time a Year 11 is home, one focused hour on the chemistry arithmetic is worth more than two unfocused hours across three sciences.

Al Falah

Villa community with a broad curriculum intake nearby and families often running two or three children's schedules at once. A fixed weekly slot survives the term where a flexible arrangement does not.

Baniyas

An established community with a large mixed-curriculum enrolment. Students here sometimes change science route when they change school, and a first marked paper is the fastest way to find out what was covered.

Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Dense mainland districts where tuition centres are available and specialist single-award teaching across all three strands is harder to find. Online matching solves the specialist problem rather than the distance problem.

Shakhbout City

Residential community with a long commute to several school clusters. Weekend morning sessions work well here for the timed theory papers that three-strand revision needs.

Khalifa City

A large catchment where buses can arrive after four o'clock. The usual arrangement is a short midweek session on one strand and the longer paper work moved to a weekend.

Al Reef

Villa communities along the airport road with a mix of British and Indian curriculum enrolment. Families here most often ask whether the single award will be enough for a science at sixth form, which is a question for the school.

Al Ghadeer

A community on the emirate boundary where some students travel towards Dubai schools and others towards Abu Dhabi. The syllabus is the same; the exam timetable may not be, and the exams officer holds the correct version.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send a marked paper

The useful first message carries your child's most recent marked science paper and, if you have it, the statement of entry showing the tier. A percentage on a report cannot be broken down by strand, which is the only thing that decides what the first session does.

  2. 02

A free first lesson that counts by strand

The trial attributes every lost mark to biology, chemistry or physics and to a type of error. Your child writes one description answer in full and it is marked against the scheme wording in front of them. You receive the count in writing whether or not you continue.

  3. 03

    Take the weakest strand first

Sessions stay on one discipline until a comparable paper shows the count moving. Spreading one hour a week across three sciences produces three shallow conversations, which is the most common way a year of science tutoring achieves very little.

  4. 04

Written work, marked before the next session

Each session sets short written work that comes back marked line by line. Definitions are compared with the scheme wording, diagrams are labelled on unfamiliar figures, and calculations carry units at every line rather than at the end.

  5. 05

    Recount and decide

After several weeks the marks are counted again on a comparable paper. If the targeted strand has not moved, the plan changes or we tell you further sessions are not the right purchase. That review is built into the arrangement rather than offered as a courtesy.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The strand is chosen by counting, not by asking

Students report what feels difficult, which is not the same as where the marks go. Counting the losses on a real paper settles it, and the answer is usually chemistry arithmetic rather than the strand the student names.

One discipline at a time

An hour a week split across three sciences becomes three shallow conversations. Staying on one strand until a comparable paper moves is slower to feel reassuring and considerably more likely to change a grade.

The route question answered straight

What the single award certifies, what it leaves out, and what it may not demonstrate to a sixth form, all stated plainly with the advice to put the final question to the school rather than to a tutoring provider.

Scheme wording for definitions and descriptions

Biology definitions and physics descriptions carry required clauses. Written answers are marked against the board's own wording so that a student can see the gap between a good answer and a creditable one.

Scheduling built for an Abu Dhabi week

Sessions run in Gulf Standard Time around long commutes from Al Shamkha, Baniyas and the mainland districts, with timed papers moved to weekends and Ramadan timings agreed in advance rather than improvised.

Limits stated in writing

No grade promises, no implied approval from ADEK or any examination board, no advice on set placement we are not qualified to give, and no suggestion that a video call replaces a laboratory bench for apparatus handling.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does the single award in Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653 actually certify?+

One IGCSE grade, drawn from biology, chemistry and physics studied together at a reduced depth. It is not three qualifications and it is not a different kind of science: the structure of each discipline is kept while the depth is cut, particularly in quantitative chemistry and in the more mathematical physics. It occupies one subject slot where separate sciences would take three, which is usually why a school chose it. What it cannot do is demonstrate strength in one named science, because the grade covers all three at once.

How many science grades will my son get from 0653?+

One. The single award produces a single grade covering all three disciplines, which is the main structural difference from Co-ordinated Sciences 0654, where the double award produces two. If you need to know exactly how it will appear on a certificate and a transcript, the school's examinations officer can show you, and the current Cambridge syllabus sets out the award structure. This matters for sixth form applications, so it is worth establishing before Year 11 rather than when results arrive.

Is 0653 easier than taking the three sciences separately?+

It carries less content, which is not the same thing as being easier to score well in. The reduction falls mainly on the parts that students find most demanding in theory, but what remains still includes the arithmetic, the exact definitions and the description answers where most marks are actually lost. A student who struggles with precision will struggle in either route. What the single award genuinely does is free up timetable time, which is usually the reason a department uses it.

Which biology topics does 0653 keep?+

The structure of the whole discipline: characteristics of living organisms, cells and movement into and out of cells, enzymes and nutrition, transport and respiration, coordination, reproduction and inheritance, and organisms in their environment. What is reduced is the level of physiological detail rather than the range. In marked papers the biology losses are usually precision rather than coverage, so the fix is writing definitions out against the scheme wording and labelling diagrams on unfamiliar figures rather than reading more widely.

Does 0653 include mole calculations?+

The single award carries a reduced quantitative chemistry section compared with separate chemistry, and the current syllabus is the document that states exactly what is required for your child's tier and series. What is consistent is that the arithmetic which remains is where most of the chemistry marks are lost, usually because a student attempts a multi-step problem without first taking the ratio from the balanced equation. Fluency with that step is the single most valuable piece of chemistry work for a 0653 candidate.

Which physics formulae does a 0653 candidate need?+

A manageable set: speed and acceleration, density, resultant force, work, power, efficiency, the wave equation and the circuit relationships between potential difference, current and resistance. Most calculation marks in the strand come from those. The current syllabus states what candidates are expected to recall and what is provided, and that document rather than a revision guide is the one to check. Unit handling costs more marks here than anywhere else, so write units at every line rather than adding them at the end.

Will a single science grade limit my daughter's sixth form options in Abu Dhabi?+

It may, and the answer is set school by school rather than centrally. Some sixth forms will consider a strong single-award grade for entry to one Advanced Level science; others expect the separate qualification in the subject the student wants to continue. Nobody outside the school can tell you which applies, so the head of sixth form is the person to ask, and it is worth asking before Year 11 rather than after results. Ask about the grade required as well as the qualification.

Can my son switch from 0653 to 0654 partway through the year?+

Sometimes, and the constraints are the timetable and the entry calendar rather than his ability. A change usually means a different teaching group following a scheme of work already partly delivered, and Cambridge entries close months before the papers: a June sitting is fixed in the spring and a November sitting over the summer, so by the time the final mock is marked the entry is already in. The autumn term is when this is a real conversation. Ask the head of science which topics the receiving set has already covered, because that list is the gap your son would have to close.

How was my child put in the combined science set?+

Usually by a combination of prior attainment, option block compatibility and how many separate science sets the department can staff and timetable. It feels like a judgement about a child and is often a structural decision about a year group. The questions that get useful answers are how many separate sets run this year, what criteria were applied, and whether there is a review point during the year. If you think the placement is wrong, a marked script is the evidence that moves a department.

Should we hire one tutor for 0653 or three?+

One, at this depth, provided they work from a mark count rather than from the student's preferences. The single award does not require separate-science Extended depth in each discipline, so a well-prepared science teacher can teach all three strands and mark them against the scheme. Three tutors for a single-award candidate usually means three shallow weekly conversations and three times the cost. What to check is whether the tutor counts the losses by strand and then stays on the weakest one until a comparable paper moves.

Which 0653 strand loses the most marks?+

On most marked papers the largest single block sits in the quantitative chemistry, with the physics relationships and unit handling close behind. Description answers across all three strands form a second substantial block, and biology losses are generally precision rather than content. That order frequently contradicts what the student reports, because discomfort attaches to difficulty while marks attach to precision. Counting the losses on a real script in the first session settles the question without anybody having to argue it.

Does the single award count as one subject for UAE equivalency?+

Reporting on the published British-track equivalency requirements states that students must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not counted among the five. How a combined or coordinated science award is counted within those five is a question for the Ministry of Education or the emirate attestation authority rather than for a tutoring provider, and it should be checked on moe.gov.ae for your own case. We describe the process and point to the official channel; we do not perform it.

Will a tutor come to our villa in Al Shamkha for science lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Lessons for Abu Dhabi families run one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. For a course spanning three disciplines this works in your favour, because the hard part is finding somebody who can carry all three strands and mark them properly, and from Al Shamkha a visiting tutor would spend a significant part of the booking travelling rather than teaching.

My daughter is strong in biology and weak in physics. Does 0653 average that out?+

The award produces one grade from performance across all three strands, so a weakness in one is diluted by strength elsewhere in a way that separate sciences would not allow. That can work in a student's favour at Year 11 and against them afterwards, because a sixth form cannot see which strand carried the grade. The practical implication for tutoring is that the physics marks are still worth recovering: they are the cheapest available to her, precisely because they are the ones currently being lost.

Which practical paper does a 0653 candidate sit?+

The practical component is set by the centre rather than chosen by the family, and the current Cambridge syllabus sets out the options and what each involves. In either version the skills examined are the same short list: reading instruments, recording to a consistent precision, tabulating with units in the heading, plotting, drawing a line of best fit, identifying anomalies, naming a specific source of error and suggesting an improvement that addresses it. Those conventions can be taught over video; handling apparatus for a laboratory test remains the school's part.

Find out which strand is costing the marks

If your child is entered for Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science 0653 at a school in Abu Dhabi, the first useful step is attributing the lost marks to a strand rather than accepting a single percentage. Send the most recent marked paper, add the statement of entry if you have it, and say which evenings are genuinely free. The free first session counts the losses by discipline and by error type, marks one description answer against the scheme wording in front of your child, and gives you the count in writing. Lessons run one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
