Cambridge IGCSE Additional Maths 0606 Tutor in Abu Dhabi

A Cambridge IGCSE Additional Maths 0606 tutor in Abu Dhabi is usually hired for one reason. A student who was comfortable in Extended 0580 has stalled on calculus, and the school set keeps moving. IB Gram matches that student to a 0606 specialist and teaches one to one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, around the Abu Dhabi school week. The first lesson is free, and it starts with a marked script rather than a conversation about ambitions.

  • One-to-one lessons over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time
  • MoHRE private tuition permit status checked before a tutor is matched
  • Sessions built around your child's own marked 0606 scripts
  • A free trial lesson first, with no fixed term afterwards

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What an Abu Dhabi family is actually buying when they hire a 0606 tutor

Additional Mathematics 0606 is the Cambridge syllabus a school offers to the students it considers strongest in maths, usually alongside Extended 0580 in the same series. It is not a harder version of the same course. It introduces differentiation, integration, kinematics, binomial expansion, logarithmic and exponential functions, circular measure in radians, and vectors, and it asks for them in multi-step questions where a single early slip removes every mark that follows. Families in Abu Dhabi rarely search for a 0606 tutor in September. They search in January, after the first set of mock results comes home and a student who has never dropped below a high grade in maths has a mark in the fifties.

That pattern has a cause worth naming. In Extended 0580 a question usually tests one skill, and a student who is quick at arithmetic can arrive at the answer by a route of their own. In 0606 the marks are split between method and accuracy, and the method mark is awarded for a specific line of working. A student who can differentiate in their head and write only the final answer loses marks on a question they fully understood. Nothing in that student's 0580 experience taught them otherwise, so they repeat the habit for an entire year unless somebody marks their script line by line and shows them where the credit was sitting.

The second cause is vocabulary rather than mathematics. The 0606 papers use exact form, show that, hence, state, determine and in terms of as instructions with precise consequences. A correct decimal where an exact surd was requested scores nothing. A numerical verification where a proof was demanded scores nothing. Students who have been rewarded all their lives for arriving at the right number find this arbitrary, and they are not persuaded by being told it matters. They are persuaded by seeing the mark scheme next to their own paper once.

Abu Dhabi adds its own constraints. ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, and enrolment is spread across the island, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, Saadiyat and Yas, and the newer mainland communities. Few of those schools run a large 0606 set. A cohort of eight or ten students is common, which means the teacher is often covering it in a lunchtime slot or an extra period, and a student who falls behind in November has no second class to drop into. The Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies that every private school in the country teaches alongside its own curriculum occupy real hours in the same week, so the evening available for maths is narrower than it looks on paper.

What a tutor can honestly change in that situation is the quality of the feedback loop. A specialist can take a marked paper, identify whether the loss is method, accuracy, notation or topic knowledge, and work through the smallest number of questions that will fix it. That is slower than a lecture and far more useful. IB Gram delivers this as one-to-one online tuition to Abu Dhabi families; home visits are a service offered only in India, and we do not pretend otherwise. The practical effect is that your child is matched to a 0606 specialist rather than to whoever teaches maths within a twenty-minute drive of your community.

At a glance

  • 0606 is sat alongside Extended 0580, not instead of it, and is graded separately
  • Two papers, two hours each, and each paper carries half the grade
  • There is no coursework and no practical component on this syllabus
  • Method marks are awarded for written lines of working, not for the final number
  • Calculus, radians and binomial expansion are new content, not extensions of 0580
  • Specialist 0606 teaching is scarce in the emirate, which is why online matching helps
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

0606 sits inside a sequence. It is taken in the Cambridge upper secondary years, it feeds directly into AS and A Level Mathematics, and it is the closest thing an IGCSE student can sit to the first weeks of IB Diploma Analysis and Approaches. The programmes below are the ones Abu Dhabi families ask about in the same conversation.

0606Ages 15-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics

A separate Cambridge IGCSE assessed by two written papers of two hours each, with no coursework. The content covers functions, quadratics, indices and surds, factors of polynomials, simultaneous equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, straight-line graphs, circular measure, trigonometry, permutations and combinations, series, vectors in two dimensions, differentiation, integration and kinematics. Candidates are normally entered for it in the same series as Extended 0580.

In Abu Dhabi the entry decision is made by the school, not the regulator. A department will look at a student's 0580 performance, the size of the set it can staff, and whether the timetable has a slot. Some schools run 0606 as an after-school option, which means a student who misses three weeks for travel has genuinely lost three weeks of teaching with no catch-up class to attend.

0580Ages 15-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics, Extended tier

The mainstream Cambridge maths IGCSE. Extended candidates sit the higher-tier papers and can reach the top grades. Content is broad rather than deep: number, algebra, mensuration, geometry, trigonometry, vectors, transformations, probability and statistics. Most questions test a single technique, which is why a strong 0580 candidate can be surprised by the multi-step structure of 0606 without any gap in their underlying knowledge.

Nearly every British-curriculum school in the emirate enters its Year 11 cohort for 0580 or for the Pearson equivalent. Where a student is taking both 0580 and 0606, the two revision programmes are not interchangeable, and a single tutor needs to be explicit about which paper a given practice question came from.

9709Ages 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level Mathematics

The sixth-form continuation. Pure Mathematics 1 opens with quadratics, functions, coordinate geometry, circular measure, trigonometry, series, differentiation and integration, which is close to the 0606 content list. Students who have sat 0606 usually find the first term familiar in topic and unfamiliar in rigour, because the proofs and the standards of presentation step up again.

Several Abu Dhabi sixth forms ask for a strong Extended 0580 grade for A Level Mathematics and treat 0606 as helpful rather than required. If your child's school lists a specific requirement, that list is the one to work to, and the head of department is the person who can confirm it.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

The analytical route through IB Diploma maths, offered at Standard and Higher Level. Calculus, functions and proof carry much of the course, and the Higher Level option asks for fluency with manipulation that a student without prior calculus has to build quickly. The exploration, written over the two years, is the student's own work and must remain so.

Abu Dhabi has a substantial IB sector alongside its British-curriculum schools, and families moving a child from an IGCSE school into a Diploma programme often ask whether 0606 smooths the transition. Within Analysis and Approaches it genuinely does, for differentiation and integration in particular. It is far less relevant to Applications and Interpretation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The 0606 syllabus is best read as a list of separate skills, each with its own failure mode. The grid below is the topic list as a tutor uses it: what the topic asks for, and the specific thing that costs marks when a student has not been shown it.

Functions, domain and range

Both papers

Composite and inverse functions, modulus graphs, and the vocabulary of domain and range. Students lose marks by giving a range as an interval of x, by forgetting that an inverse requires a one-to-one function, and by sketching a modulus graph without reflecting the correct branch.

Quadratic functions and the discriminant

Both papers

Completing the square, maximum and minimum points, and conditions on the discriminant for distinct, equal or no real roots. The common loss is answering with a value when the question asked for a range of values of k, or solving the discriminant equation and forgetting the inequality it came from.

Indices, surds and exact form

Both papers

Manipulating fractional and negative indices, rationalising denominators, and leaving an answer as a surd. This is the topic behind most avoidable 0606 losses, because a student who rounds mid-question cannot recover the exact answer the mark scheme requires at the end.

Factors of polynomials

Both papers

The factor and remainder theorems, division of a cubic, and solving the resulting quadratic. Marks are lost when working is correct but no conclusion is written: a show that question wants a sentence stating what the remainder proves, not only the arithmetic that produced it.

Logarithmic and exponential functions

Both papers

Laws of logarithms, solving equations with the unknown in the index, and reducing a relationship to a straight-line form. Students who learn the laws as rules rather than as consequences tend to apply the subtraction law to a sum of logarithms and lose the whole question.

Straight-line graphs and linear law

Both papers

Converting a non-linear relationship into Y against X form, then reading constants from a gradient and intercept. The frequent error is plotting the original variables, producing a curve, and then forcing a line of best fit through it anyway rather than transforming first.

Circular measure and radians

Both papers

Arc length, sector area and problems combining triangles with sectors. Almost every mark lost here comes from a calculator left in degree mode, or from a student converting an answer back to degrees when the question was set, and is marked, in radians.

Trigonometry, identities and equations

Both papers

Reciprocal ratios, Pythagorean identities, and solving equations across a stated interval. The single largest loss on the paper is giving one solution where the interval contains three or four, because the student solved the equation and stopped at the calculator's principal value.

Series and the binomial theorem

Both papers

Arithmetic and geometric progressions, sums to infinity, and binomial expansion including a specified term. Finding the term independent of x requires setting up and solving an equation in the index, which students often skip by expanding by hand and running out of time.

Permutations and combinations

Both papers

Arrangements with restrictions, selections, and problems requiring a case split. This topic is routinely postponed to the final fortnight and then met cold in the exam. It rewards careful reading more than technique, which makes it one of the cheaper topics to recover late.

Differentiation and its applications

Both papers

Product, quotient and chain rules, stationary points, second derivatives, tangents and normals, connected rates of change. Students lose accuracy marks by giving an x coordinate alone where the question asked for a point, and by stating a maximum without testing the nature of the stationary value.

Integration and kinematics

Both papers

Indefinite and definite integration, area under a curve, area between a curve and a line, and the displacement, velocity and acceleration chain. The classic loss is integrating correctly, then subtracting the limits in the wrong order, or forgetting the constant in a kinematics problem with a stated initial condition.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of working cover almost every 0606 request we receive from Abu Dhabi. All three are delivered one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. What changes between them is the length of the commitment and what the hour is spent on.

Weekly one-to-one across the course

A fixed weekly hour from the start of Year 11, or from the point in Year 10 when 0606 teaching begins. The session runs a week behind the school set rather than ahead of it, so the tutor is consolidating content the student has already met and can work on the problems the class moved past too quickly.

  • One fixed slot each week, held in Gulf Standard Time
  • A short piece of work set between sessions, marked before the next one
  • Topic-by-topic record so you can see where the marks are moving
  • Pauses available around school assessment weeks and travel

Diagnostic block after a mock

Four to six sessions beginning with a full mark of the student's mock script against the published scheme. The output is a short list of causes, ranked by how many marks each one costs, and the sessions then work through that list. Families usually take this in January, when the mock has landed and there is still time to act on it.

  • Starts from your child's own paper, not a generic diagnostic test
  • Separates method, accuracy, notation and genuine topic gaps
  • Produces a written plan you can discuss with the school
  • No obligation to continue once the block is finished

Paper-technique run before the series

A short intensive sequence in the weeks before the papers, built entirely around timed questions. Each session covers one full long question from Paper 2 and a set of shorter Paper 1 items, written out in full under time, then marked line by line. The aim is to convert knowledge the student already has into marks the scheme will award.

  • Timed conditions from the first session onwards
  • Every script marked against the official mark scheme wording
  • Focus on exact form, conclusions and stated solutions
  • Scheduled around the school's own study leave arrangements

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

Where the marks are awarded in a 0606 answer

  • Write the line that earns the method mark even when the answer is obvious
  • Leave answers in exact form unless a decimal is explicitly requested
  • Finish a show that question with a stated conclusion
  • List every solution inside the interval the question gives you

A 0606 question is marked in parts. Some marks are for method, awarded when a particular line of working appears, and some are for accuracy, awarded for the final value in the form the paper asked for. A student can reach the correct answer and collect only half the available marks, and a student can make an arithmetic slip early and still collect most of them if the method is visible. Neither outcome makes sense to a family looking at a score alone, which is why the first session with a new 0606 student is spent on a script rather than on content.

The practical consequence is that presentation is part of the subject. In Extended 0580 a student who can see the answer may write one line and move on, and the paper usually rewards it. In 0606 the same habit removes marks on question after question across two papers. Once a student has watched a mark scheme being applied to their own work, the behaviour changes in a session or two. Told as a general rule, it does not change at all.

The table below sets out five question types that recur across 0606 papers, what each one is actually rewarding, and the reason the mark most often goes missing. None of these losses is a knowledge gap. Every one of them is a habit, which is why they respond quickly to being named.

This is also the honest answer to a question Abu Dhabi families ask early: what can tutoring realistically change before a series? It can change the proportion of what a student already knows that converts into marks. That is frequently the larger of the two available gains, and it is the one nobody at school has time to work on individually.

02

Exact form, surds and answers that are right but score nothing

  • Exact form means a surd, fraction, logarithm or multiple of pi, not a decimal
  • Round once, at the end, from unrounded working
  • A fraction containing a root is a finished answer, not an unfinished one
  • Where the paper does not specify, exact is the safer default

Exact form is the single most expensive piece of vocabulary on this syllabus. It means the answer must be left as a fraction, a surd, a logarithm or a multiple of pi, with no decimal approximation anywhere in the final line. A student who computes a square root on the calculator at step two has destroyed the exact answer before reaching the end of the question, and no amount of correct subsequent work recovers it. The mark scheme does not award the decimal, because the decimal is not the thing being tested.

This runs against everything a capable fifteen-year-old has been rewarded for. In earlier years, getting to a number quickly was the skill. In 0606 the number is often the least interesting part of the answer, and the examiner wants to see that the student can carry an irrational quantity through several steps without flinching. Rationalising a denominator, simplifying a surd, and recognising that a fraction with a root in it is a finished answer are all habits built by doing, not by being told.

The related trap is premature rounding on questions that do want a decimal. Where a paper asks for three significant figures, it wants three significant figures in the final answer, computed from unrounded intermediate values. A student who rounds at every stage arrives at a figure that disagrees with the scheme in the last digit and loses the accuracy mark while having understood the whole question. Both errors come from the same root, which is treating the calculator as the place where mathematics happens.

In a session this is fixed mechanically. The student works a question with the calculator face down, writes the exact answer, and only then evaluates it if asked to. After a dozen questions the habit holds under exam pressure, which is the only condition that matters. It is dull work and it reliably returns marks, which makes it a sensible use of paid time in the weeks before a series.

03

The two 0606 papers against an Abu Dhabi Year 11 week

Both 0606 papers run for two hours and each carries half the grade. The difference between them is the shape of the questions rather than the topics: one paper is built from a larger number of shorter items, the other from fewer, longer, multi-step problems. A student can be comfortable with one shape and poor at the other, and a mock mark that averages the two hides that completely. Asking which paper the marks were lost on is usually more informative than asking which topic.

There is no coursework on 0606 and no practical component. Every mark is earned in a timed room, which simplifies planning and raises the cost of poor exam technique. It also removes a category of worry that families carry over from other subjects: there is no portfolio to assemble, no internal deadline to miss, and no question about what a tutor may contribute to a submitted piece of work, because nothing is submitted.

What Abu Dhabi families need to watch instead is the entry calendar, which sits much earlier than parents expect. Cambridge allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones and publishes a different timetable for each, and its own guidance is blunt about the consequences: it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam. A school handles this, but it is worth knowing that your child's timetable may not match a cousin's at a different school.

Abu Dhabi candidates sit 0606 in the June series or the November series, and the administration runs a long way ahead of either. Entries for a June sitting close in the spring, months before the first paper, and the exact day reaches the family through the centre rather than a public page, so the only copy worth planning from is the Cambridge key dates document for that series and the statement of entry the exams officer issues. November then works as the resit route: a candidate who misses the grade in June can re-enter for the November papers and keep the better result, which is the practical reason the decision about whether a student is entered for 0606 at all is usually taken months before anyone has seen a mock paper. Ask for the entry deadline in writing in the term before it falls, not in the week the mocks come back.

Trigonometry in 0606: identities, intervals and the degree-radian switch

  • Sketch the quadrant diagram or the graph before writing any solution
  • Check calculator mode at the start of every circular measure question
  • Prove an identity from one side; never cross-multiply it like an equation
  • Read the interval first and write it at the top of the working

Trigonometry is where 0606 separates students who have learned techniques from students who have understood them. The syllabus adds reciprocal ratios, the Pythagorean identities, and equations that must be solved across a stated interval. The step up from 0580 is not computational. It is that a single equation now has several valid answers, and the student has to know where to look for them rather than trusting the calculator to hand them over.

The failure is consistent enough to predict. A student rearranges correctly, applies an identity correctly, reaches a value for a ratio, presses the inverse function, writes one answer and moves on. Two or three marks are gone. The fix is a drawn quadrant diagram or a sketched graph for every equation, every time, until it is automatic. Students resist this because it feels slow, and the resistance disappears the first time they see a full mark scheme for a question they half answered.

Radians cause a separate problem that compounds the first. Circular measure questions are set in radians, so arc length and sector area formulas assume radian measure, and a calculator left in degree mode returns a plausible wrong number with no warning. Mixed questions that combine a sector with a non-right-angled triangle are common, and they require the student to hold both measures in mind without converting unnecessarily. Checking the calculator mode at the start of every question sounds trivial until you count the marks it saves across two papers.

Identities are worth separating from equations in a plan. Proving an identity is a presentation task: start from one side, work to the other, never treat it as an equation to be solved. Solving an equation is a search task: reduce to a single ratio, find the principal value, then find every other value inside the interval. Students who conflate the two attempt proofs by substituting numbers, which earns nothing, and then conclude they are bad at trigonometry when the problem was the instruction.

Permutations, series and the topics students leave until April

  • State whether order matters before selecting a permutation or combination formula
  • Identify the progression type from the wording before using any formula
  • Check the condition for a sum to infinity before applying it
  • Schedule the short contained topics early and keep calculus running throughout

Every 0606 cohort postpones the same two areas. Permutations and combinations get left because they look unlike the rest of the syllabus, and series gets left because the formulas feel interchangeable until they are needed. Both then arrive cold in the final fortnight, at the point when revision time is scarcest and new content is hardest to absorb. Because both topics are self-contained, they are also among the cheapest marks available late, which makes the usual order of revision close to backwards.

Permutations and combinations reward careful reading more than technique. The decision a student has to make is whether order matters, and then whether a restriction forces a case split. Most lost marks come from reading the question once, choosing a formula, and never noticing a condition such as two particular people needing to sit together. Working through ten questions aloud, with the student stating the structure before touching a formula, generally fixes it inside two sessions.

Series splits into three jobs that get muddled. Arithmetic progressions require identifying first term and common difference from a verbal description. Geometric progressions require the same for the ratio, plus the condition for a sum to infinity to exist. The binomial theorem requires setting up an index equation to locate a particular term rather than expanding everything in sight. A student who can state which of the three a question belongs to has already done most of the work.

For an Abu Dhabi student planning revision backwards from the series, the practical advice is to schedule these two areas early and the calculus late. Calculus is the subject's backbone and benefits from spaced repetition across months. Permutations and series are short, contained, and can be lifted in a fortnight. Reversing that order is how a capable student arrives at the paper with strong calculus and two whole topics unseen.

Who may legally tutor your child in Abu Dhabi

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is issued through MoHRE, and the federal guidance states that it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers at government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you by anybody.

The application route is MoHRE's own service, listed as issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing, available through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, with a stated completion time of two working days. That matters for a parent because it makes the permit a reasonable thing to ask about. A tutor who has been teaching in the emirate for years and has never heard of it is telling you something useful.

Abu Dhabi adds a condition that Dubai families do not face in the same form. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, with the permit's own code of conduct pointing the same way. That reporting should be checked against the current ADEK policy document before anyone treats it as exact wording, but the direction is clear enough that a parent should not be arranging paid lessons with their child's own classroom teacher.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It holds no permit, licence or endorsement from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or any other body, and it does not operate premises in the UAE. What we do is check a tutor's permit position before a match and tell you plainly what we have and have not verified. The table sets out who the permit covers so you can ask the right question of any tutor, including one you find somewhere else.

What 0606 support costs around Abu Dhabi

Published tutoring rates in the UAE sit in bands that are wide enough to be confusing and specific enough to be useful once you know what each band includes. The figures below come from providers that publish their own numbers and from a 2026 Dubai cost survey, and they are market rates, not IB Gram's price list. Abu Dhabi sits broadly in line with Dubai for online specialist teaching, because the pool of people who can teach Additional Mathematics is national rather than local.

Three things move the number for this syllabus in particular. The first is scarcity: a tutor who has actually taught 0606, as opposed to 0580, prices at the specialist end because there are fewer of them. The second is marking. An hour of teaching plus a marked script between sessions is a different product from an hour of talking, and the cheaper bands generally exclude the marking. The third is timing, since the weeks before a series are when demand for every maths specialist peaks at once.

What you should not pay for is travel. An in-home visit in this market carries a rate that includes the driver's time, and in a city where crossing from the mainland to the island at five in the afternoon can absorb forty minutes each way, that time is being purchased at the teaching rate. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. The comparison is not online versus in-person as an abstract preference. It is whether the hour you pay for is an hour of teaching.

For planning purposes, a weekly hour with marking across a two-term run is the common shape for 0606, with a short intensive block before the papers. Where a family is choosing between buying more hours and buying better hours, the better hours usually win on this syllabus, because the limiting factor is almost never how much content has been covered. It is how much of the content converts into marks on a timed paper.

Abu Dhabi schools, ADEK, and who decides whether 0606 happens at all

  • Ask the department how many candidates it enters for 0606 and in what slot
  • Ask whether a student can withdraw at mock stage without affecting the 0580 entry
  • Inspection ratings describe a school, not a single syllabus decision
  • Private-candidate entry is arranged through a centre, never through a tutor

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, and it publishes inspection outcomes on a banded scale running from the highest rating down to the weakest. Those reports are worth reading before a school choice and are close to useless for a question like whether a maths department runs an Additional Mathematics set. Inspection judgements are about provision across a whole school. The 0606 decision is made inside one department, by people balancing a small cohort against a timetable.

So the questions that get useful answers are departmental. How many students are entered for 0606 this year. Whether it is taught in a timetabled lesson or an after-school block. Which teacher takes it. What the department looks for in a 0580 performance before offering a place. Whether a student can be withdrawn at the mock stage without consequence for the 0580 entry. A head of maths will answer all five, and the answers tell you more about your child's prospects than any published rating.

The federal position behind all of this is that private schools in the UAE are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, provided they adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. That is why an Abu Dhabi student sitting Cambridge papers is also carrying mandated subjects in the same week, and it is a real constraint on the hours available for an extra maths qualification. A family weighing up 0606 should count those hours honestly before committing.

Where a school does not offer 0606 at all, a private entry is sometimes possible through a centre that accepts external candidates, and the school or the centre is the right place to ask about it. We can teach the syllabus; we cannot enter a candidate, and no tutoring provider can. Anyone who implies otherwise is worth a second look.

What a 0606 tutor should not be asked to do

  • Teaching a method is support; supplying the answers to assessed work is not
  • Official papers and mark schemes are referenced and linked, never redistributed
  • Examiner status is a factual claim and should be evidenced before it is used
  • No provider can guarantee a grade on a timed written examination

Because this syllabus has no coursework, the academic-honesty questions that dominate IB and Pearson subjects do not arise in the same way. There is no exploration, no portfolio and no submitted investigation, so there is nothing a tutor could improperly contribute to. What remains is the school's own work: weekly problem sets, assessed classwork and internal mocks, and the line there is simple. A tutor may teach the method, work a comparable question, and check the student's reasoning. A tutor should not be producing the answers that get handed in with a student's name on them.

The second boundary concerns materials. Cambridge syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the board's copyright. A tutor may reference them, cite them and point a family to the official pages on cambridgeinternational.org. Supplying them as downloads is not something a tutoring provider should be doing, and a site offering a library of them should prompt a question about what else it treats casually.

The third is credentials. Describing a tutor as an examiner is a specific factual claim about a current appointment, and it should be evidenced or dropped. It also should not be used to imply any access to marking, boundaries or unseen papers, because no such access exists. Our position is that we tell you what we have checked, which is the permit position and the tutor's own account of what they have taught, and we do not dress either up as something more.

Finally, no tutor can promise a grade. Additional Mathematics is a two-paper examination sat under timed conditions by a sixteen-year-old on a given morning, and the number of variables between a good programme of work and a specific number is large. What can be promised is a marked script after each piece of work, a named cause for each cluster of lost marks, and an honest answer when the evidence says the plan is not working.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi communities differ less in what they study than in what time a session can start. The school run, the length of the commute from the mainland to the island and back, and the hours already committed to Arabic and Islamic Education all decide when a 0606 lesson is realistically possible.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Island addresses within short reach of several long-established British-curriculum schools. Students are often home by half past three, which makes an early evening slot workable before homework rather than after it.

Al Mushrif and Al Karamah

Close to some of the oldest school campuses in the emirate. Families here frequently have two children on different exam timetables, and we schedule 0606 on a fixed weekday so the other subject keeps its slot.

Khalifa City and Al Raha Gardens

A large British and American curriculum catchment on the mainland side. Bus routes through this corridor can run past four o'clock, so a sensible 0606 session starts at six and finishes before the evening meal.

Saadiyat Island

Smaller, newer cohorts with a high proportion of families who have moved mid-course from another system. Scheduling is usually easy; the harder job is auditing which 0606 topics a transferring student has already been taught.

Yas Island and Al Reem Island

Growing residential communities where a weekday trip to a tuition centre on the island means crossing a bridge twice. Online sessions remove that journey entirely, which is the main reason families here book them.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Al Shamkha

Mainland communities where many students travel a considerable distance to school. By the time a Year 11 is home, an hour of focused calculus is a better use of the evening than two hours of general revision.

Al Reef and Al Falah

Villa communities near the airport road with a mix of British and Indian curriculum enrolment. Weekend morning slots are popular here, and they suit the long multi-step 0606 questions that need an uninterrupted hour.

Masdar City and Zayed City

Dispersed addresses where specialist in-person tuition for a minority subject is hard to find at any price. A 0606 entry is exactly the case where the tutor pool matters more than the postcode.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Island

The island holds several of the emirate's longest-running British-curriculum schools, and these are the departments most likely to run an Additional Mathematics set, because they have the cohort size to staff one. Students we support in these communities are usually sitting 0580 and 0606 in the same series.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Cambridge International School Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi Grammar School
  • Al Mamoura Academy
  • The Pearl Academy

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas

The mainland corridor and Yas Island carry a large share of the emirate's newer British and American curriculum enrolment. Where 0606 is offered here it is often an option block rather than a timetabled lesson, which is why a student who misses a fortnight can be genuinely stranded.

  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Raha International School
  • Reach British School
  • West Yas Academy
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat and Al Reem

Newer campuses with smaller year groups, a high rate of mid-year arrivals, and families who may have met three curricula before Year 11. The first job with a transferring 0606 student is working out which topics were covered at the previous school.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Repton Abu Dhabi
  • Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi
  • Amity International School Abu Dhabi

Schools are named here as context for the Abu Dhabi education sector only. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from, or partnership with any school, school group, examination board or regulator named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send what you already have

The most useful first message contains the most recent marked 0606 paper or mock script, a note of which other maths syllabus your child is sitting, and the two evenings that are realistically free. A school report is far less informative than two pages of your child's own working.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson that marks something

The trial is a working session, not a consultation. The tutor sets a short piece of 0606 work, watches how the student presents it, and reports back on whether the losses are method, accuracy, notation or genuine topic gaps. You get that report whether or not you continue.

  3. 03

Agree the plan and the slot

You choose the shape: a weekly hour across the year, a diagnostic block after the mock, or a technique run before the papers. The slot is fixed in Gulf Standard Time around the Abu Dhabi school week, and it can move for assessment weeks, travel and Ramadan timings.

  4. 04

Work between sessions, marked before the next

Each session sets a short piece of written work. It comes back marked against the published scheme wording, with the losses labelled by cause. This is the mechanism that changes behaviour, and it is the part the cheaper rate bands generally leave out.

  5. 05

    Review the evidence, then decide

Every few weeks the record is read as a whole: which topics have moved, which have not, and whether the remaining losses are worth more sessions. If the evidence says the current plan is not working, you will hear that from us rather than discover it in June.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A 0606 specialist rather than a maths tutor

Additional Mathematics is not advanced 0580. The pool of people who have actually taught the calculus, radian and binomial content is much smaller than the pool of maths tutors, and matching online rather than by postcode is what makes reaching that pool possible from Abu Dhabi.

Marking against the published scheme

Every piece of work comes back marked against the official wording, with each loss labelled as method, accuracy, notation or topic. That distinction is the whole value of a 0606 session, and a mark out of ten with a tick does not provide it.

Scheduling that respects an Abu Dhabi week

Sessions are set in Gulf Standard Time, planned around school bus times from the mainland corridor, and moved for internal assessment weeks and Ramadan timings. A slot that collides with the mandated subjects your child also studies will not survive the term.

Stated limits instead of implied approval

IB Gram holds no approval, licence or partnership from ADEK, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or any school. We say what we have checked, which is the tutor's permit position and teaching history, and nothing beyond it.

Honest answers about what tutoring cannot fix

If a student has three weeks before a paper and half the syllabus unseen, the right advice may be to protect the 0580 grade instead. We would rather say that than sell a package of sessions that cannot do what the family is hoping for.

An hour of teaching, not an hour of travel

Lessons are delivered one to one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, because home visits are a service offered only in India. The practical effect is that the hour you pay for is spent on mathematics.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Is Additional Maths 0606 on the timetable at most Abu Dhabi schools?+

No. It is an option that British-curriculum schools in the emirate offer selectively, usually to a small group they judge strongest in maths, and often in an after-school or option block rather than a timetabled lesson. Some schools do not offer it at all. The useful questions for a head of maths are how many candidates are entered this year, when it is taught, and what a student needs to show in 0580 before being offered a place. Where a school does not run it, a private entry through a centre that accepts external candidates is sometimes possible, and the school or centre is the right place to ask.

Why does my son lose marks on 0606 questions he says he answered correctly?+

Almost always because the marks were split between method and accuracy, and he wrote only the answer. In Extended 0580 a student who can see the result often gets away with one line of working. In 0606 the method mark is awarded for a specific line appearing on the page, so a question answered mentally and written briefly can score half of what was available. The other common cause is form: a decimal given where the paper asked for exact form earns nothing. Both are habits rather than knowledge gaps, and both change quickly once a student has seen the mark scheme applied to their own script.

Why is a decimal answer sometimes marked wrong in 0606?+

Because the question asked for exact form, which means a surd, a fraction, a logarithm or a multiple of pi, with no approximation in the final line. The paper is testing whether a student can carry an irrational quantity through several steps, so the decimal is not an acceptable alternative version of the same answer. There is a related trap in the other direction: where three significant figures are requested, they must be computed from unrounded working, and a student who rounds at every stage disagrees with the scheme in the last digit. The practical fix is to work the question with the calculator unused and evaluate only if asked.

How are the marks split between the two 0606 papers?+

Each paper runs two hours and each carries half the grade. The difference is the shape of the questions rather than the content: one paper is made up of a larger number of shorter items, the other of fewer, longer, multi-step problems. That matters for diagnosis, because a student can be solid on one shape and weak on the other while the averaged mock mark hides it. When a mock comes back, ask which paper the marks were lost on before asking which topic, and check the current syllabus on cambridgeinternational.org for the exact component details for your child's series.

Which calculator is my daughter allowed to take into a 0606 exam?+

A calculator is permitted in the written papers, and the model restrictions are set out in the information for candidates inside the current Cambridge syllabus rather than decided by the school. That document is the one to check, because the rules differ between Cambridge maths syllabuses and reading the wrong one is a genuine risk. What matters more for marks is how the calculator is used. Most exact-form losses on this syllabus come from evaluating something early, so good 0606 practice involves long stretches of working with the calculator deliberately left alone.

Does 0606 appear on the same certificate as her other Cambridge subjects?+

Additional Mathematics is a separate Cambridge IGCSE with its own grade, sat alongside Extended 0580 rather than in place of it, so a student who takes both receives a grade for each. That is part of the appeal and part of the risk: it is an extra qualification, and it is also an extra examination in a series that is already full. Families weighing it up should count the additional study hours against the subjects already on the timetable, including the Arabic, social studies and Islamic education that private schools in the UAE teach alongside their own curriculum.

My daughter solved the trigonometric equation but only got one mark. Why?+

Because the interval in the question contained more than one solution and she wrote down only the calculator's principal value. This is the largest single avoidable loss on the paper. Reducing the equation to one ratio earns the method mark, and the accuracy mark requires every solution inside the stated interval. The habit that fixes it is drawing a quadrant diagram or sketching the graph for every equation before writing any answer, and writing the interval at the top of the working so it cannot be forgotten. Students find this slow for about a fortnight and then stop losing the marks.

How many weekly hours does 0606 add on top of an Abu Dhabi Year 11 timetable?+

Families we work with typically find that a single focused hour a week, with a short piece of marked work between sessions, is enough across most of the year, rising to two in the weeks before the papers. What makes the difference is not volume but whether the work is written out, timed and marked against the published scheme. Count the hours already committed before you decide: an Abu Dhabi student is carrying nine or ten subjects plus the mandated Arabic, Islamic education and social studies, and a plan that ignores those collapses by the second half of term.

Can an Abu Dhabi school teacher tutor my child privately for 0606?+

Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct pointing the same way. Verify the current wording on adek.gov.ae before relying on it, but the direction is clear enough that arranging paid lessons with your child's own classroom teacher is not a sensible route. A teacher from a different school who holds the permit is a different question entirely.

What does a specialist 0606 tutor charge per hour around Abu Dhabi?+

Published market figures put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, IGCSE and A Level specialists at AED 200 to 450 or above, and premium named tutors higher again; one provider publishes AED 650. In-home rates in the UAE run from about AED 180 to 500, and that band includes the driver's time. Those are other providers' published numbers as at October 2026, not our price list. For 0606 specifically, scarcity pushes a genuine specialist towards the upper bands, and the thing worth paying for is whether marking between sessions is included.

Do you send a tutor to our villa in Khalifa City for maths lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Lessons for Abu Dhabi families are one to one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. For a minority syllabus this is the arrangement that actually helps, because the constraint on 0606 is not distance but the number of people who have taught the course. Matching online means your child works with an Additional Mathematics specialist rather than with whoever teaches maths within a short drive of Khalifa City.

Which 0606 topics are worth leaving until last?+

Not permutations and series, which is the order most students choose. Those two areas are short, self-contained and liftable in a fortnight, which makes them cheap marks to recover late and a poor use of the final weeks if they have been left entirely unseen. Calculus is the opposite: it is the backbone of both papers, it rewards spaced repetition over months, and it does not respond well to being crammed. A sensible plan front-loads the contained topics, keeps differentiation and integration running throughout, and reserves the last fortnight for timed papers rather than new content.

Will a 0606 grade help with Ministry of Education equivalency in Abu Dhabi?+

For the British track, reporting on the UAE equivalency requirements states that students must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, and that Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. Whether a particular syllabus counts within those five is a question for the Ministry or the emirate attestation authority, not for a tutoring provider. Verify your own case on moe.gov.ae before making a decision that depends on it.

What does the free trial lesson for 0606 actually cover?+

It is a working session rather than a sales call. The tutor sets a short piece of Additional Mathematics work, usually drawn from a released paper, watches how your child presents the working, and then reports on whether the lost marks are method, accuracy, notation or genuine topic gaps. If you have a marked mock script, send it beforehand and the trial starts from that instead. You receive the written diagnosis whether or not you continue, and there is no obligation and no card required to book it.

Our evenings are full with Arabic and Islamic education homework. Can 0606 fit?+

It usually can, but only if the plan is built around the week you actually have. Private schools in the UAE teach Arabic, social studies and Islamic education alongside their licensed curriculum, and those subjects carry homework that lands on the same evenings as everything else. We would rather schedule one protected hour at a time that survives the term than two hours that get cancelled from November onwards. Weekend mornings work well for the long multi-step 0606 questions, because those need an uninterrupted stretch rather than a tired half hour.

Start with a marked script, not a sales call

If your child is entered for Additional Mathematics 0606 at a school in Abu Dhabi and the mock has come back lower than anyone expected, the fastest useful step is to have the paper marked properly by somebody who teaches this syllabus. Send the script, tell us which other maths paper your child is sitting and which two evenings are genuinely free, and the trial lesson will start from that work. You will get a written diagnosis separating method from accuracy from topic gaps, and an honest view of what the remaining weeks can and cannot do. Lessons run one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
