IB DP Psychology Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP psychology home tutor in Abu Dhabi is usually hired because a student who reads widely and talks well about the subject keeps coming back with a 5. The reason is almost always wording rather than knowledge: in this subject the command term sets the ceiling on an answer before the first sentence is written. This page maps the command terms, the three approaches, the research-methods vocabulary and the report criteria. Lessons run online, one to one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Essays marked against the published criteria, with the band named
  • Matched on the option topic your child's school actually teaches
  • Report support is questioning and feedback on the student's own work
  • Delivered online one to one; no visits to addresses in the UAE

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The grade is set by the verb, not by the reading

Psychology attracts students who are genuinely interested, and that is why the mark often disappoints. A student reads around the subject, holds strong views about obedience studies and memory models, can talk for twenty minutes about the material, and writes an essay that earns twelve marks out of twenty-two. The content was present. What was missing was the thing the question asked for, and in this subject what the question asks for is encoded in a single verb at the start of it.

The IB uses command terms on a graded scale. The lowest band asks for recall: define, describe, outline, state. The middle band asks for process: explain, apply, analyse, distinguish, compare and contrast. The top band asks for judgement: discuss, evaluate, to what extent, examine. An answer written at the wrong level is capped regardless of quality. A beautifully written description in response to a question beginning discuss has already lost the marks that separate a 5 from a 7, and it will lose them again on the next paper, and the one after that, until somebody points at the verb.

The structure the terms sit inside is worth stating plainly. The first paper examines the biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches to behaviour through three short-answer questions worth nine marks each and one extended response worth twenty-two. The second paper draws on the option topic or topics the school has chosen, again through extended responses worth twenty-two marks. Higher Level adds a third paper, built on an unseen description of a study, which tests the methodology and ethics vocabulary of the course rather than its content. The internally assessed experimental report is marked against four criteria totalling twenty-two marks and sits inside a defined word range.

Abu Dhabi contributes two specifics. First, cohorts are small and the option topic is chosen by the department, so two students in neighbouring communities can be sitting materially different second papers; brief any tutor on the option before booking. Second, the ethics of running a replication are tighter here than students assume, because the participants available to a school student are usually classmates who are minors, and consent, debriefing and data handling all have to be properly dealt with. Lessons themselves are delivered online, one to one, over live video; IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, because home visits are a service we run only in India.

The order of work on this page follows the order the marks come in. Command terms first, because they cap everything. Then the three approaches as a revision structure rather than a reading list. Then the methodology vocabulary, which supplies the critical-thinking credit in every essay and the whole of the Higher Level methodology paper. Then the report, criterion by criterion, with the ethics settled before any data is collected. Then the regulator, the university routes and the honest position on what a tutor may and may not touch.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Psychology is a Diploma subject, but students arrive at it from several directions and the gap on arrival differs by route. These are the stages that matter for an Abu Dhabi family and what support is actually for at each.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Two years covering three approaches to behaviour, one or more option topics, research methodology, and an experimental report written against four criteria. Standard and Higher Level share the approaches; Higher Level adds extension content within each approach and a separate methodology paper. The subject sits in the individuals and societies group rather than the sciences.

Abu Dhabi Psychology cohorts are often taught by a single teacher across both levels, and the option topic is settled at department level. Ask which option the class sits and whether the Higher Level extensions have been taught yet, because in a mixed-level room they are frequently left until late in DP2.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Individuals and Societies in the middle years is where command-term discipline is built. The criteria already distinguish between describing and evaluating, and students who learned to separate the two arrive in DP1 able to read a question properly. Those who did not spend DP1 unlearning a habit instead of learning content.

Students moving into Diploma Psychology from a middle years programme in this emirate usually need methodology vocabulary rather than subject content. A short block in the summer before DP1 on sampling, bias and generalisation pays off across both papers and the report.

COREAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The Diploma core: IA, EE and TOK

The experimental report, an Extended Essay that many students choose to write in Psychology, and Theory of Knowledge all land together. Psychology is a popular Extended Essay subject and a difficult one, because the ethical constraints on original research push students towards literature-based questions they are not taught how to frame.

Internal deadlines in Abu Dhabi schools cluster before the long weekends and the Eid breaks, and a report that depends on collecting data from classmates has to be scheduled around those breaks rather than through them. Plan the data collection against the school's internal date, which usually sits months ahead of anything external.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Psychology is chosen alongside a particular set of subjects, and the combination affects both the workload and the university routes that stay open. These are the pairings seen most often in this emirate.

Psychology

HL and SL

Biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches, one or more option topics, research methodology, and an experimental report on four criteria. Marks are lost to command terms and to unevidenced claims far more often than to gaps in content knowledge.

Biology

HL and SL

Cells, physiology, genetics and ecology with an internally assessed investigation. Frequently paired with Psychology because several university psychology courses prefer an experimental science alongside it. The two share a weakness in the evaluation sections of their respective reports.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

An interdisciplinary course spanning the sciences and individuals and societies, often taken to satisfy two group requirements at once. Students choosing it alongside Psychology should confirm how their target universities treat it, because recognition varies by course.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Anatomy, exercise physiology and the psychology of performance, with its own investigation. Overlaps usefully with the biological approach in Psychology, and students often find that revising one strengthens the other rather than doubling the load.

Business Management

HL and SL

Five content units, two written papers and a research project worth a quarter of the grade. Popular beside Psychology in Abu Dhabi humanities blocks, and the two fail identically: a concept stated correctly and never anchored to specific evidence.

Global Politics

HL and SL

Political concepts examined through a source booklet and extended responses, plus an engagement project. Shares Psychology's dependence on command terms, and students who master the verb ladder in one subject transfer it to the other almost immediately.

History

HL and SL

A source paper, comparative essays, a Higher Level regional option and a 2,200-word historical investigation. The argument discipline History demands is the same discipline the twenty-two-mark Psychology essay rewards, which makes the pairing efficient rather than heavy.

English A: Literature

HL and SL

Studied works, unseen literary analysis, an individual oral and a Higher Level essay. Relevant to Psychology in a practical way: both reward paragraphs that make a claim, evidence it and weigh it, and neither rewards fluent summary.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and financial mathematics. The statistics content maps directly onto the analysis criterion of the Psychology report, and students taking both should be using one to teach the other rather than treating them separately.

Arabic

Ab Initio, B and A

Offered at several levels across Abu Dhabi schools, and a mandatory subject alongside the licensed curriculum for the groups the regulations specify. Students carrying Arabic alongside a Psychology option have a real timetable constraint, and it is worth naming when planning weekly study hours.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of support matched to how Psychology marks are actually lost. Most families need the first and third rather than a general weekly lesson.

Essay marking cycles

The student writes a timed extended response, the tutor marks it against the published criteria and names the band, and the session is spent on the gap between the band awarded and the band above. Over four or five cycles the student stops writing descriptions in response to judgement questions, which is the single largest available mark movement.

  • Written under time before the session, not during it
  • Marked against the published criteria with the band stated
  • Session spent on the next band, not on re-teaching content

A report block against the internal assessment

Six to ten hours timed to the school's internal deadlines, taken criterion by criterion: the research question and the study being replicated first, then the design and the ethics, then the analysis, then the evaluation. Questioning rather than correcting, so the report stays the student's own work throughout.

  • Criteria taken in the order the marks are awarded
  • Ethics and consent settled before any data is collected
  • Statistical analysis understood by the student, not supplied to them

Command-term and timing clinic

A short, narrow block on the mechanics: reading the verb, planning to the band it demands, and getting three short answers plus an extended response finished inside the time available. Students who know the content and still run out of time are buying the wrong thing if they buy content revision.

  • The verb ladder drilled until the plan follows automatically
  • Short answers practised to a nine-mark structure under the clock
  • Full papers sat to time at least twice before the session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What this search means, and why wording moves Psychology grades more than reading

  • Send one marked extended response, one marked short answer and any report draft
  • Four common causes, four different fixes, four different hour counts
  • A first session that produces a lesson rather than a diagnosis has been wasted
  • Ask which option topic the school teaches before matching a tutor

A parent searching for an IB DP psychology home tutor in Abu Dhabi usually has a specific grievance: the child is interested, informed and getting a 5. The grievance is reasonable and the cause is almost always structural rather than intellectual. Psychology is marked on whether an answer did the operation the question specified, and students who have never been taught to separate the operations write the same essay for every verb.

Three documents make the diagnosis quick. A marked extended response shows which band the examiner placed the answer in and usually why. A marked short-answer question shows whether the student can produce a complete nine-mark answer or runs out after the description. And the report draft, if one exists, shows whether methodology is understood or borrowed. Twenty minutes with those three is worth more than an hour of conversation about how the subject is going.

What the diagnosis typically finds is one of four things. The student describes when asked to evaluate. The student evaluates without a study to evaluate, so the claims float. The student has studies but cannot name their methodological limitations, which is where most of the critical-thinking credit lives. Or the student can do all of it and cannot do it in the time, which is a technique problem rather than a knowledge one.

Each of those has a different fix and a different cost in hours. Describing instead of evaluating takes four or five marked essay cycles. Floating claims take a study bank, built once and reused. Missing methodological limitations is a vocabulary job and the fastest of the four. Timing is practice under the clock, which a tutor can structure but mostly cannot shortcut. Knowing which of the four you are dealing with is why the first session should produce a diagnosis rather than a lesson.

02

The command-term ladder, and what each rung is worth

The IB groups its command terms into three levels of demand, and the level sets the maximum an answer can earn. The first level asks the student to reproduce: define, describe, outline, state, identify. The second asks the student to do something with the material: explain, apply, analyse, distinguish, compare, contrast, compare and contrast. The third asks for a judgement that could have gone the other way: discuss, evaluate, examine, to what extent.

An extended response worth twenty-two marks almost always opens with a third-level term, and the credit is distributed accordingly. Knowledge and understanding of the material is necessary but bounded. The marks that lift an answer out of the middle bands come from the critical-thinking strand: methodological limitations of the studies cited, alternative explanations for the findings, the question of whether a result generalises beyond its sample, and a position taken and defended rather than a summary of views.

Students resist this for an understandable reason. Describing is safe, it demonstrates work, and it fills a page. Judgement feels like an invitation to be wrong. The teaching move that fixes it is not an explanation but a constraint: the student is required to finish every paragraph with a sentence that weighs something. Two or three essay cycles under that constraint and the habit sticks, because the band moves and the student can see it move.

Short-answer questions behave differently and are worth drilling separately. Nine marks will not accommodate a judgement, so the structure is tighter: the concept stated accurately, one study used to support it with enough procedural detail to count as evidence, and the link between the two made explicitly rather than implied. Students lose marks here by writing a long description of a famous study and never connecting it to the term in the question.

03

Three approaches, and what each one is examined on

The first paper is built on three approaches to behaviour, and students who organise their revision by approach rather than by topic find the paper considerably easier to sit. The biological approach deals with the relationship between physiology and behaviour: brain structures, neurotransmission, hormones and pheromones, and the genetic contribution. The cognitive approach deals with models of mental process: memory models, schema, thinking and decision-making, and the reliability of cognitive process including reconstructive memory and the effect of emotion.

The sociocultural approach deals with the social and cultural origins of behaviour: social identity, social cognitive theory, stereotypes, cultural dimensions and the transmission of behaviour. At Higher Level each approach carries an extension, and these are the parts most often taught last and revised least in a mixed-level classroom. In an Abu Dhabi cohort where one teacher runs both levels, the extensions are a reasonable first question for a parent to ask about.

Running underneath all three is research methodology, which is examined in the papers as well as assessed in the report. Students are expected to know which methods suit which questions, what the sampling techniques are and what each one costs in terms of representativeness, how bias enters through the researcher and through the participant, and what ethical obligations apply. This is examinable content in its own right and it is also the source of most critical-thinking marks in essays about any approach.

The practical revision structure that works is a grid: approach down one axis, and for each cell the concept, two studies, each study's method, each study's main methodological limitation, and one ethical consideration. Built once in DP1 and maintained, it answers short-answer questions directly and supplies evidence for extended responses in any of the three approaches. Built in the fortnight before the examination, it is a list of names.

THE THREE APPROACHES — CONTENT, METHODS AND WHERE MARKS GO MISSING
ApproachCore content examinedMethods typically used in the studiesWhere students lose marks

04

The methodology paper and the vocabulary Higher Level students skip

  • The methodology paper cannot be answered from content revision
  • Methods, sampling, bias, credibility and generalisation are a finite vocabulary
  • Precision earns marks that general comment about small samples does not
  • The same vocabulary supplies critical-thinking marks in the other papers

Higher Level students sit an additional paper built on an unseen passage describing a piece of research. The questions are short and they are about the research rather than about psychology: what method was used and why, what the sampling approach costs the study, what ethical considerations arise, how credible the findings are, and how far they can be generalised. Students who have treated methodology as background reading find this paper unexpectedly hard, because none of it can be recalled from content revision.

The vocabulary is finite and learnable, which is the good news. Methods: experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, case study, observation, interview, focus group. Sampling: random, opportunity, purposive, self-selected, snowball, with the trade-off between convenience and representativeness attached to each. Bias: researcher bias, participant expectancy, demand characteristics, social desirability. Credibility, triangulation and the several senses in which a finding may or may not generalise.

The paper rewards precision with those terms rather than general sensible comment. A student who writes that the sample was small and therefore the study is unreliable has said something true and earned little. A student who identifies an opportunity sample drawn from a single institution, explains that this limits generalisation to populations sharing that institution's characteristics, and names what a different sampling approach would have cost in practical terms has answered the question that was asked.

Two or three sessions on this vocabulary move marks on the methodology paper and on every essay in the other two papers, because methodological criticism is where the critical-thinking credit lives throughout the course. It is the highest-leverage content in the subject and the least likely to be covered properly in a small mixed-level class with a crowded year.

05

Building a study bank that survives a twenty-two-mark question

  • Five fields per study: aim, participants, procedure, findings, limitation with consequence
  • Two solid studies per content area beats twenty names
  • A limitation without a stated consequence earns very little
  • The same evaluation moves transfer to the option topic

Most students carry studies as names with a gist attached. That is enough to recognise a question and not enough to answer one. An extended response needs studies used as evidence, which means the student can state the aim, describe enough of the procedure for the reader to see why the finding follows, give the finding accurately, and then say something critical about how it was obtained.

The practical form is a single-page record per study with five fields: aim, participants and how they were obtained, procedure in three sentences, findings, and one methodological limitation with its consequence stated. The fifth field is the one students leave out and the one that earns the marks, because a limitation named without a consequence is a label rather than an evaluation.

How many studies are needed is less than students fear and more than they usually hold properly. Two well-known studies per content area, held to that standard, cover the short-answer questions and supply evidence for extended responses across the paper. Twenty studies held as names is worse than eight held to the five-field standard, and it takes longer to assemble. The economy here is real and it is worth explaining to a student who is trying to read everything.

The bank also does the work on the second paper. Option topics draw on their own studies, but the evaluation moves are the same: sampling, ecological validity, cultural specificity, the gap between a laboratory task and the behaviour it stands in for. A student who has internalised those moves in the context of the three approaches applies them to option material without being taught again.

06

The experimental report: a replication, four criteria and a word range

The internally assessed component is a report on an experimental study the student has conducted, normally a simple replication or modification of a published experiment. It is marked against four criteria covering the introduction, the exploration of the design, the analysis of the results and the evaluation, totalling twenty-two marks, and it sits inside a defined word range. Confirm the current range and your school's internal deadline with the Diploma coordinator rather than relying on any figure from a tutoring page.

The failure that costs most is choosing a study that cannot be replicated by a school student with classmates as participants. If the original required equipment, clinical populations, deception that would not be permitted, or a timescale longer than a term, the replication will be a distortion and the introduction will struggle to justify it. That decision is made in a single conversation, early, and it is the highest-value hour anyone will spend on this component.

The second failure is the analysis. Students either apply a statistical test they do not understand or avoid statistics entirely and describe the means. The criterion rewards an appropriate test, correctly applied, with the result interpreted in terms of the hypothesis rather than announced. A student taking a mathematics course with statistics in it already has the tools; the job is connecting two subjects they have been taught separately.

The third is the evaluation, which students write as general reflection. The criterion wants the design, the sample and the procedure assessed specifically, with modifications proposed that would address the weaknesses identified, not a paragraph about how the experiment went well other than a few problems. The pattern that earns the band is: this specific feature of the design limited this specific inference, and here is what would have been done differently and why.

Ethics for a student researcher in this emirate: what cannot be run

  • Consent, right to withdraw, debriefing and anonymity designed in, not added later
  • Clinical conditions, distress and meaningful deception are off the table
  • Collect the minimum data, separate identifiers, plan the deletion
  • Ethics is a design constraint and the exploration criterion rewards treating it as one

Students design replications without thinking about who the participants will be, and in practice they will be classmates, which means minors at a school licensed and inspected by ADEK. That changes what is possible. Informed consent has to be obtained properly, with the school's involvement and in the form the school requires. The right to withdraw has to be real and stated before participation rather than mentioned afterwards. Debriefing is not optional. Anonymity has to be designed into the data collection rather than promised in the write-up.

Some study designs are simply unavailable to a school student and it is better to discover that in the first conversation than in the third week. Anything requiring deception beyond the mildest, anything that could cause distress, anything touching on clinical conditions, anything involving data about identifiable individuals that a student would then hold on a personal device. A replication that cannot be run ethically is not a replication worth proposing, and the introduction will be unable to justify it.

Data handling deserves a specific mention because students rarely consider it. The UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection governs personal data generally, and the sensible student practice is to collect no more than the design needs, to separate any identifying information from the responses at the point of collection, and to have a plan for deleting what was gathered once the report is submitted. Schools increasingly ask about this, and a student who has thought about it looks like a researcher rather than like a candidate.

The useful framing for a tutor session is that ethics is a design constraint rather than a paperwork exercise. Every ethical requirement narrows the design space, and a student who designs inside the constraints from the start produces a study that is both permissible and defensible in the exploration criterion. One that designs freely and then bolts on consent forms produces a report with a visible seam in it.

Diploma Psychology in Abu Dhabi schools, and the option the department chose

ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in this emirate and publishes inspection ratings for them. Those ratings describe schools rather than departments, so they will not tell you whether the Psychology teaching is strong. The questions that will are specific: how many students sit the subject this year, whether both levels share a room, which option topic the department has chosen, how many cohorts have sat that option, and whether anonymised past reports at different mark bands can be seen.

The option question matters more than families expect. The second paper is set entirely on the option or options the school teaches, and the choice is a department decision. A tutor who has taught one option through several cohorts is a specialist for those students and a generalist for everyone else. This is the first thing to establish and it costs one email.

Mandatory UAE subjects sit alongside the Diploma for the groups the regulations specify, and they are a real constraint on a Psychology student's week rather than a footnote. Dubai's regulator requires Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies in all private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes organised for Arab and non-Arab students and specified languages of instruction. The federal position is that private schools must follow Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies alongside their own curriculum. Abu Dhabi families should confirm the local requirement with the school, and should count those hours when planning how many tutoring sessions a week is realistic.

On the national picture, the regulator map is worth knowing because families move. Dubai sits with KHDA, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain with ADEK, Sharjah with the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah with its Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah with the federal Ministry of Education. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from any of them, nor from the IB, and claims none; they are named to explain who governs what.

09

Where Psychology leads after the Diploma, and what to check first

Psychology sits in the individuals and societies group rather than in the sciences, and that single fact causes more admissions confusion than anything else in the subject. Some university psychology courses treat it as a relevant subject and ask for a laboratory science alongside it. Others accept it as the science-adjacent subject in its own right. A few do not count it either way. The variation is at course level rather than institution level, so the only reliable method is to read each course's own entry profile.

For students staying in the region, Khalifa University, New York University Abu Dhabi, Zayed University, United Arab Emirates University and Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi each publish their own requirements, and those requirements change. For overseas applications the pattern to watch is whether a course wants mathematics at a particular level, since psychology degrees are more quantitative than school psychology suggests and several courses specify it.

Certificate equivalency through the Ministry of Education is a separate process from university admission and is often conflated with it. The published British-track rules are specific: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count of five, plus either one A-Level at no less than E or two AS-Levels at the same grade. For the American track, English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, with at least 450 in SAT Mathematics. No IB points threshold appears in the source we verified, so check moe.gov.ae or the emirate attestation authority rather than taking a figure from any tutoring page.

One thing worth saying plainly: tutoring is not a requirement for equivalency, for university admission or for progressing through the Diploma. Pages that imply otherwise are inventing urgency about a regulatory process. What tutoring can do is move marks on named components, and the honest sales argument stops there.

Academic honesty, and the specific temptation in Psychology coursework

  • A replication that does not reproduce the original finding is normal and markable
  • The evaluation criterion rewards reasoning about the result, not the result
  • A tutor questions, explains and comments; a tutor does not write or analyse
  • Ask for a written coursework position before any hours are booked

Every subject in this set has an honesty section, and in Psychology the temptation has a recognisable shape. A replication produces a result that does not match the original, the student concludes the experiment failed, and the pressure arrives to adjust the data or to write the discussion as though the expected result had appeared. Both are academic misconduct and both are unnecessary, because a replication that does not reproduce the original finding is entirely normal and the criteria do not reward the result.

What the criteria reward is the quality of the reasoning about the result. A student whose findings diverge and who can explain plausibly why, in terms of the sample, the procedure, the operationalisation or the context, is demonstrating exactly what the evaluation criterion asks for. The student who reports a tidy confirmation with no reflection has produced a weaker report. This is worth telling a student explicitly and early, because the fear of a null result drives a lot of poor decisions in the final fortnight.

The tutor boundary is the same as everywhere else in the Diploma and worth stating in full. A tutor may teach methodology, explain what a criterion asks for, question a design before data is collected, read a student's own draft and say where a claim is unevidenced, explain a statistical test, and ask the questions that make a student revise. A tutor may not supply text, perform the analysis, rewrite a section into its final form, or produce any part of the assessed work. One site in the competitor research sells completed internal assessments outright; the consequence of buying one falls on the student.

Ask any provider for their written position on coursework before booking hours, and read the answer for what it describes rather than for how it sounds. A provider who talks about integrity in general while offering a service that returns completed drafts has answered the question. A provider who states which specific actions they will refuse has given you something useful to compare.

What Psychology support costs in the Abu Dhabi market, and how lessons run

Market rates for a qualified subject tutor working online across the UAE run roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with IB specialists quoted from about AED 200 to AED 450 and upwards, and in-home visits at roughly AED 180-500 because travel is carried inside the hour. Those bands come from published provider pages and from Bestimate's Dubai rate table, read in October 2026. They describe the market and are not an IB Gram price list.

In this subject the distinction that matters is whether marking is inside the rate. Psychology improves through marked essays, and a provider whose hourly rate covers lesson time only is selling something different from one whose rate includes reading a timed extended response against the published criteria and naming the band. Compare those two quotes as though they were the same product and the cheaper one will look better than it is.

On delivery, the position stated plainly: every UAE lesson is one-to-one and online, over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send a tutor to an address in Abu Dhabi, and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. The practical gain is tutor choice. A family in Al Falah or Al Samha selects from the same pool of specialists in their option topic as a family in Al Khalidiyah, rather than from whoever is prepared to make the drive.

Scheduling in this emirate deserves one note. The useful study window for essay work is narrow, and it moves. School hours shorten during Ramadan and the productive hours shift late, so a standing slot usually moves to after Iftar for that period. Internal coursework deadlines cluster before the long weekends and the Eid breaks. Because there is no travel to rearrange, moving a slot is a calendar change rather than a renegotiation, and a report block timed properly against those dates is worth more than the same hours spread evenly through a term.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Delivery is online, so area does not affect which tutor is available. It does affect what time a session can realistically start, which in this subject matters because essay work needs a student who is awake. These are the communities the enquiries come from.

Al Khalidiyah

Central island district with short school runs and a mix of curricula, so a 4.30pm start is genuinely workable here. Families tend to arrive with a specific essay in hand rather than a general worry, which is the quickest way to a useful first session.

Al Karamah

Established residential area near several long-running Diploma cohorts. The common pattern here is a student carrying Psychology alongside Arabic and a science, where the real constraint is hours in the week rather than understanding.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa community with a late-finishing school run and a lot of Diploma students. Essay marking cycles work better here than live teaching sessions, because the useful work happens between sessions and the session is for the feedback.

Al Falah

A newer family community some distance from the island school cluster. Visiting tutors are scarce and expensive here, so the realistic choice for a Psychology specialist is online or nothing, which is the honest case for the format.

Baniyas

Large mainland community with students travelling considerable distances to school. The study window opens late, and a fixed evening slot that never moves is worth more than a flexible one that drifts week to week.

Al Zahiyah

Dense central district where households often have more than one Diploma student. Families here ask most often about sharing hours between siblings, and the answer depends on whether both sit the same option topic.

Al Samha

Northern community towards the Dubai border, with a long commute in both directions. Scheduling is the whole conversation here, and the fact that an online slot costs the same at 9pm as at 4pm is the practical advantage.

Island and central Abu Dhabi Diploma cohorts

Psychology is widely offered across this cluster, usually as a single class covering both levels. Students we support attend schools here; no affiliation or endorsement is implied. Ask the department which option topic the cohort sits and whether anonymised past reports at different mark bands can be shown, because one marked exemplar teaches the criteria faster than any explanation.

  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy

Saadiyat, Al Reem and the newer campuses

Where the subject is newer the option topic may still be settling, and the Higher Level extension content is the part most often left until late. A second opinion on a borderline report has real value in a department making its first submissions in the subject.

Khalifa City and the eastern corridor

The corridor where Diploma demand concentrates and where the early evening slots fill first. A number of students here transfer in from British-track schools at sixteen and need the methodology vocabulary taught from the beginning rather than revised.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send three documents, not a description

One marked extended response, one marked short-answer question and the report draft if it exists. Those three show whether the problem is the command term, the evidence base, the methodology vocabulary or the clock. A description of how the subject is going cannot distinguish between them.

  2. 02

Confirm the option topic and the level

The second paper is set on the option the department chose, and the Higher Level extensions may or may not have been taught yet. One email to the Diploma coordinator settles both, and both decide which tutors can actually help. Send the answers with the enquiry.

  3. 03

Free trial with an essay open

The trial is held by the tutor who would take the slot, with the student's own marked essay on the screen. It ends by naming the band the work currently sits in and the specific move that reaches the band above. If that statement is general, the honest conclusion is not to book.

  4. 04

    Buy marking cycles, not lessons

The purchase that moves Psychology marks is a cycle: timed essay before the session, marked against the criteria, session spent on the gap. Agree how many cycles, what is included, and the date on which somebody reports whether the band has moved.

  5. 05

Report block timed to the internal deadline

Coursework hours work against the school's internal date rather than anything external, and the design and ethics conversation has to happen before any data is collected. Book the block early; the conversation that saves a report is the first one, not the last.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Essays marked against the published criteria

Written work is marked with the band named and the specific move to the next band stated. A comment that says the essay was good is not feedback. In a subject where the command term sets the ceiling, naming the band is the only honest way to show whether anything changed.

Matched on the option, which is checkable

The second paper is set entirely on the option the department chose. We tell you which option the tutor has taught and for how many cohorts, because a Psychology specialist for the wrong option is a well-read generalist. Ask every provider the same question.

Ethics treated as part of the teaching

Consent, right to withdraw, debriefing, anonymity and data handling are design constraints, and the exploration criterion rewards a student who designed inside them. We raise them in the first coursework conversation rather than after the data has been collected the wrong way.

A stated boundary on assessed work

A tutor teaches method, explains criteria, questions a design and comments on the student's own draft. A tutor does not supply text, run the analysis or produce assessed work. The boundary is published because a market in finished coursework exists alongside this one.

No regulator borrowed as a credential

ADEK licenses and inspects private schools in this emirate; other emirates sit with KHDA, SPEA, the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge or the federal Ministry of Education. IB Gram holds no approval or accreditation from any of them, nor from the IB, and claims none.

Figures that carry a source and a date

Every AED band on this page is attributed to a named published source read in October 2026, and no statistic about our own results appears anywhere, because we could not produce the underlying data for one. A number without a source is a number nobody can check.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Which command terms does IB Psychology use, and why do they decide the mark?+

The IB groups command terms into three levels of demand. Define, describe, outline and state ask for reproduction. Explain, apply, analyse and compare and contrast ask the student to do something with the material. Discuss, evaluate, examine and to what extent ask for a judgement. The level sets the ceiling: a description written in answer to a question beginning discuss is capped in the middle bands however well it is written. This is why a student who knows the content can keep receiving a 5, and why the fastest fix is marked essay cycles rather than more reading.

Why does my child score a 5 on essays despite knowing all the studies?+

Almost always because the marks that lift an answer out of the middle bands are in the critical-thinking strand, not in the content. That strand wants methodological limitations of the studies cited, alternative explanations for the findings, a view on whether a result generalises beyond its sample, and a position taken rather than a summary of views. A student who writes accurate content and never weighs it has done the first half of the task. The reliable fix is a constraint: every paragraph must end with a sentence that weighs something. Two or three essay cycles under that rule usually moves the band.

How many psychological studies does my child actually need to know by name?+

Fewer than most students try to carry, held to a higher standard. Two well-known studies per content area is normally enough, provided each one is held with five things: the aim, who the participants were and how they were obtained, three sentences of procedure, the findings, and one methodological limitation with its consequence stated. Twenty studies held as names and gists is worse than eight held that way, because names cannot be used as evidence. The fifth field is the one students omit and the one that earns the critical-thinking marks.

What is the third paper that Higher Level Psychology students sit?+

It is built on an unseen passage describing a piece of research, and the short questions are about the research rather than about psychology: which method was used and why, what the sampling approach costs the study, what ethical issues arise, how credible the findings are and how far they generalise. None of it can be recalled from content revision, which is why students who treated methodology as background reading find it hard. The vocabulary is finite and two or three focused sessions on it also lift the critical-thinking marks on the other papers.

What is the word range for the Psychology internal assessment report?+

The report sits inside a defined range specified in the subject guide, and it is marked against four criteria covering the introduction, the exploration of the design, the analysis of results and the evaluation, totalling twenty-two marks. Confirm the exact current range with your school's Diploma coordinator rather than relying on a figure from any tutoring page, including this one, because guides are revised. The more useful planning number is the school's internal deadline, which normally sits months ahead of anything external and is what the data collection has to be scheduled against.

Can my child run a psychology experiment on classmates at an Abu Dhabi school?+

Usually yes, within real constraints, and those constraints should shape the design from the start. Participants will be minors at a school licensed and inspected by ADEK, so informed consent has to be obtained in the form the school requires, the right to withdraw has to be stated before participation, debriefing is not optional, and anonymity has to be built into the data collection. Designs involving meaningful deception, potential distress, clinical conditions or identifiable personal data held on a student's own device are not available. Settle this in the first conversation, not the third week.

What goes wrong in the analysis section of a Psychology report?+

Two things, in roughly equal measure. Some students apply a statistical test they do not understand, which the criterion does not reward because the interpretation gives it away. Others avoid statistics entirely, describe the means and stop. What earns the band is an appropriate test, correctly applied, with the result interpreted against the hypothesis rather than announced. A student taking a mathematics course with statistics in it already holds the tools and has simply never been shown that the two subjects connect, which is a quick fix in one or two sessions.

Our replication did not produce the original finding. Has the report failed?+

No, and this is worth telling a student early because the fear of it drives poor decisions in the final fortnight. Replications frequently diverge, and the criteria do not reward the result. What they reward is reasoning about the result: a student who can explain plausibly why their findings differ, in terms of the sample, the procedure, the operationalisation or the context, is doing exactly what the evaluation criterion asks. A tidy confirmation with no reflection is the weaker report. Adjusting data to match an expectation is academic misconduct and entirely unnecessary.

Which Psychology option topic has my child's school chosen?+

Ask the department, because it is their decision and it determines the whole second paper. The option is chosen at school level from a small set, and at Higher Level more than one may be taught. This is the single most important question to settle before matching a tutor, since someone who has taught one option through several cohorts may be of limited use for another. A provider who books you in without asking has told you something about how closely they match. One email answers it.

Does Psychology count as a science for university applications?+

It depends on the course rather than on the university, and the variation is wide. In the Diploma, Psychology sits in the individuals and societies group, not the sciences. Some university psychology courses accept it as the relevant subject, others require a laboratory science alongside it, and competitive medicine and health science routes generally expect named sciences at Higher Level with Psychology as an additional subject. Several psychology degrees also specify mathematics, because the discipline is more quantitative than school psychology suggests. Read each course's own entry profile before the level choices lock.

Can a tutor help with the experimental report without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, and the useful help is substantial. A tutor may teach research methods, explain what each criterion asks for in plain language, question the choice of study and the design before any data is collected, explain a statistical test, read the student's own draft and point out where a claim is unevidenced, and ask the questions that prompt a revision. What a tutor may not do is supply text, perform the analysis, rewrite a section into final form, or produce any part of the assessed work. Ask for that boundary in writing before booking.

How do Abu Dhabi school term dates affect Psychology revision planning?+

More than families expect, because this subject improves through written work produced between sessions rather than during them. Internal coursework deadlines in the emirate's schools tend to cluster before the long weekends and the Eid breaks, which means data collection for the report has to be scheduled around those gaps rather than through them. Mandatory UAE subjects sit alongside the Diploma for the groups the regulations specify, and those hours are real; count them when deciding how many essays a week is honestly achievable rather than planning on paper time nobody has.

What does Diploma Psychology tutoring cost in the Abu Dhabi market?+

A qualified subject tutor working online across the UAE is quoted roughly AED 150-300 an hour, IB specialists from about AED 200 to AED 450 and upwards, and in-home visits roughly AED 180-500 because travel is inside the hour. Those bands come from published provider pages and Bestimate's Dubai rate table, read in October 2026, and they are the market rather than our prices. In this subject the question that matters is whether marking is inside the rate, since Psychology improves through marked essays and a lesson-only hour is a different product.

Can Psychology sessions move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan?+

Yes, and most families in this emirate ask for it. School hours shorten, the productive study window shifts late, and the 4.30pm slot that worked in January is the worst hour available in March. Because lessons are online there is no travel to rearrange, so moving a standing slot is a calendar change rather than a renegotiation. The same flexibility applies around the long weekends and the Eid breaks. For a subject whose progress depends on essays written between sessions, protecting the slot at a workable hour matters more than the hour itself.

What happens if no Abu Dhabi-based Psychology specialist is free at our hour?+

We say so, and offer the slot with a tutor based elsewhere who teaches the same specification and the same option topic, at the same rate, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. The Diploma Psychology teaching population inside the UAE is small and the option topics divide it further, so in a given week there may be nobody free at 5pm on a Tuesday. Where the option cannot be covered properly, saying the slot is unavailable is a better answer than substituting a generalist at specialist money. No researched competitor in this cluster discloses a coverage limit.

Send a marked essay and we will tell you which band it sits in

One marked extended response, one marked short answer and the option topic from your school's Diploma coordinator are enough to say whether the problem is the command term, the evidence base, the methodology vocabulary or the clock. Those four need different numbers of hours and different kinds of tutor, so the diagnosis is worth more than a lesson. The trial that follows is free and is held by the tutor who would take the slot, with your child's own work on screen. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one online over live video on Gulf Standard Time; we do not make home visits in the UAE.
