IB Retake Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Families look for an IB retake tutor in Abu Dhabi for one reason: a results sheet arrived, a university offer is conditional, and a decision about the November session has to be made quickly and within a budget. This page gives you the money first. Market rates in AED, what the retake entry itself adds, what a second attempt at one Higher Level subject realistically costs across the emirate, and what pushes that number up or down. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The cost of an IB retake in Abu Dhabi, before anything else

A retake is a budget decision before it is an academic one. Most Abu Dhabi families arrive at this page having already decided they want the grade; what they do not know is whether the plan costs two thousand dirhams or twenty. So start with the arithmetic. Published rates from UAE providers put qualified online subject tutoring at roughly AED 150-300 an hour, and IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at roughly AED 200-450 and above. TutorChase lists AED 270. Bestimate's Dubai rate table runs 200-450+ for specialist exam-year work. BartyED sits at AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Those are market figures, not an IB Gram price list.

Now multiply by hours rather than guessing. A single Higher Level subject being rebuilt for a November resit typically takes a weekly ninety-minute session from the summer through to the exam window, plus a tighter block of two sessions a week in the final six weeks. That is roughly thirty to thirty-six hours of teaching. At the mid band that is in the region of AED 6,000-9,000 for the subject; at specialist rates, more. Two subjects is not double, because paper technique transfers, but it is not far off either, and the honest version is that most families who retake two subjects spend more on tuition than they spent on the first year of DP support.

What changes the number in Abu Dhabi specifically is the shape of the market here rather than the headline rate. Abu Dhabi has fewer IB World Schools than Dubai and therefore a thinner pool of local subject specialists in the subjects people actually retake: Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Chemistry Higher Level, Physics Higher Level, Economics Higher Level. An in-home tutor in Khalifa City who genuinely teaches Chemistry HL is a rare animal, and rarity is priced. Families who insist on a tutor driving to the villa are, in practice, choosing from a shortlist of two or three people and paying the travel premium on top: published in-home bands in the UAE run AED 180-500 an hour inclusive of travel, against AED 150-300 online.

The second thing that moves the number is how late you start. A retake planned in the week results arrive is a thirty-hour plan. A retake planned eight weeks before the November papers is a compressed forty-hour plan, because you are paying for intensity to replace time, and intensity costs more per unit of progress. The entry fee is separate again and is set by your school or the exam centre, not by us, and it has its own deadline that sits months ahead of the papers.

IB Gram delivers this as one-to-one online tuition to Abu Dhabi. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run in India only. For a resit that is an advantage rather than a compromise, because the constraint on a retake is subject specialism, not geography. A student in Al Reef gets the Economics HL teacher who has read two hundred Paper 3 scripts, rather than whichever generalist is within a twenty-minute drive of Al Reef.

At a glance

  • Specialist IB tutoring in the UAE market: roughly AED 200-450+ per hour (Bestimate, TutorChase, October 2026)
  • In-home one-to-one in the UAE: roughly AED 180-500 per hour including travel
  • One HL subject rebuilt for November: typically 30-36 teaching hours
  • Exam entry for a resit is charged by your school or centre, not by a tutor
  • The entry deadline falls months before the papers, so the budget decision is earlier than parents expect
  • ADEK regulates private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain; it does not set tutoring rates
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A retake conversation is almost always about the Diploma Programme, but the two programmes below it matter here too, because a sibling in MYP is usually the next student in the house and because the Career-related Programme has its own resit shape.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Each subject carries a grade from 1 to 7, with up to three bonus points from the TOK and Extended Essay matrix, for a maximum of 45. Subject grades are built from externally marked papers and an internally assessed component. A retake is organised by subject and by component, not by the whole Diploma, which is the single most useful fact on this page.

Abu Dhabi's DP cohort sits in a relatively small number of schools licensed by ADEK concentrated on the island and in the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor. That concentration means retake students often know each other, and it also means school-side retake administration varies: some schools register former students as resit candidates without fuss, others ask you to go through an external centre. Confirm which applies before you plan the teaching.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Five years of inquiry-led study across eight subject groups, assessed against four criteria per subject on an eight-point scale, with the Personal Project in the final year. There is no external resit structure in MYP, because there is usually no external exam. What MYP students carry into DP is a criterion habit of mind and, often, a gap in algebraic fluency and in timed written work, both of which show up later as a Paper 1 problem.

Abu Dhabi MYP cohorts are the feeder for the emirate's DP classes, and the subjects that generate retakes two years later are visible here: students who finish MYP with a 4 in mathematics and then choose Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level are the single most common retake profile we see in this emirate. Fixing it in Year 11 is cheaper than fixing it after results.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller framework combining at least two DP courses with a career-related study, the Personal and Professional Skills course, service learning, a reflective project and a language development component. Students take the DP courses as individual certificates, which are graded 1 to 7 exactly as Diploma subjects are, so a CP student can resit a course in the same way a Diploma student can.

CP provision in Abu Dhabi is thin compared with full Diploma provision, so CP students here often sit their DP courses alongside Diploma classmates and face identical paper formats. If a CP course grade is blocking a UAE or UK university condition, the resit route is the same, and so is the entry deadline.

RETAKEAny former DP candidate

Resit candidature

Not a programme, but the status your child holds for the second attempt. A resit candidate re-registers for named subjects for a later session, chooses whether to carry forward the existing internally assessed mark or submit new work where the subject allows it, and sits the external papers again. Grades from the two attempts do not average; the Diploma is reissued using the subject results that stand.

In Abu Dhabi the practical question is who registers you. If your child has left the school, the school may still act as the registering centre, or may not. Ask the IB coordinator in writing, and ask early, because an entry deadline missed in the emirate is not something a tutor can fix with more hours.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma subjects Abu Dhabi families most often resit, with the component that usually caused the problem. A retake plan that does not name a component is a retake plan that will cost you the same money for the same grade.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The most resat subject in this emirate. At Higher Level, Paper 3 is the extended investigative paper and is where students who can do routine questions fall apart, because it asks them to follow an unfamiliar argument under time pressure. Marks also leak steadily from Paper 1, the no-calculator paper, through algebraic slips rather than conceptual gaps.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Technology-permitted throughout, which students mistake for easier. The losses are in modelling and interpretation: choosing the wrong model, then failing to comment on its limitations. Statistical tests are performed correctly and then described in language that earns no marks. A retake here is largely a writing and interpretation rebuild, not a calculation one.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and energetics generate the most resit demand. Higher Level students lose marks on multi-step calculations where one unit error propagates, and on explanation questions where they describe what happens instead of why. The data booklet is underused: students who have not practised navigating it waste minutes they do not have.

Physics

HL and SL

The pattern in resits is a strong mechanics performance and a weak fields, induction and quantum performance, because those topics arrive late in the second year when coursework pressure peaks. Marks are lost in extended-response questions through missing reasoning steps rather than wrong answers, which is a trainable fault.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume is the problem rather than difficulty. Resit students usually know the content and cannot retrieve it precisely under timing, so answers drift into general description. Command-term discipline is the whole retake: distinguish, outline, explain and evaluate each carry a different mark structure, and answering the wrong one scores nothing.

Economics

HL and SL

Higher Level Paper 3 is the quantitative paper and is the most common single reason an Economics grade sits a point below expectation. Diagram labelling is the other recurring loss: a correct diagram with an unlabelled axis or a missing new-equilibrium point loses marks that cost nothing to secure.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool application separates grades. Students name a framework and then do not use it on the stimulus, which earns description marks and no analysis marks. The Higher Level extension topics are often taught last and revised least. A resit plan here is a sequence of timed case responses with feedback on structure.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1, the guided textual analysis of an unseen text, is the resit driver. Students write about what the text says rather than how it works. The fix is mechanical: a repeatable approach to an unseen non-literary extract, practised against the assessment criteria until the structure is automatic.

Psychology

HL and SL

Study recall is accurate and critical thinking is thin, which caps answers in the middle bands. Resit work concentrates on evaluating methodology and on the Higher Level extension content, where students commonly revise the approaches thoroughly and the extensions barely at all.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Pseudocode under timed conditions is the recurring loss, alongside the Higher Level abstract data structures topic. Students who code fluently in a real language often cannot write the IB's pseudocode conventions accurately, and the paper marks the conventions. A short, targeted retake often moves this grade more than any other subject.

Arabic B

HL and SL

Productive skills carry the grade and receptive practice dominates most students' revision, which is the wrong way round. Resit work is weighted towards timed writing in the required text types and towards the individual oral, with corrections at sentence level rather than general encouragement.

Geography

HL and SL

Case-study precision decides the top bands: named places, dated events, figures. Resit students usually have the concepts and a bank of vague examples. The Higher Level core extension is also frequently under-revised, and it carries its own paper, so the deficit is structural rather than incidental.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

A resit runs to a fixed external deadline, so the format question is really a question about how many hours you can protect each week between results and the papers. These are the three shapes that work.

Single-subject rebuild, weekly

One ninety-minute session a week on one subject, from shortly after results through to the final weeks. This is the default and the cheapest route to a grade change, because it concentrates every hour on the component that actually lost the marks. It also leaves the student time to do the practice between sessions, which is where the grade is actually made.

  • One subject, one component focus, reviewed every fourth session
  • Written feedback on timed work completed between sessions
  • Scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, typically 16:00-21:00
  • Roughly 30-36 teaching hours for a Higher Level subject

Two-subject parallel plan

Two subjects taught in alternating sessions, usually one science and one mathematics, with paper technique treated as shared rather than duplicated. Cheaper per subject than two separate plans, but it demands more from the student, because the between-session practice doubles while the week does not get longer.

  • Alternating subject focus with a single shared timing discipline
  • One progress record covering both subjects
  • Suited to students not enrolled in school during the resit year
  • Honest caveat: two Higher Level resits in one short session is hard

Final-stretch intensive

Two sessions a week across the last six to eight weeks, built entirely around timed papers and the mark scheme. It is the right choice when a decision came late, and it is the most expensive per point of improvement, because intensity is being bought to replace time that no longer exists.

  • Full timed papers under exam conditions, marked and returned
  • Component-level diagnosis after each paper
  • No new content unless a specific gap blocks a whole topic
  • Costs more per grade point than starting in the summer

Component clinic

A short block of four to six sessions on one named component: Mathematics Higher Level Paper 3, Economics Higher Level Paper 3, an English Paper 1 unseen approach. Used when the rest of the subject grade was sound and one paper dragged the whole thing down, which is more common than parents expect.

  • Four to six sessions, one paper format only
  • Requires the subject grade breakdown to be worth doing
  • The lowest-cost intervention that can still move a grade
  • Not sufficient where two or more components underperformed

01

What an IB retake actually costs in Abu Dhabi

An IB retake in Abu Dhabi costs the tuition hours plus the exam entry, and the tuition hours are the larger number. Using published UAE market rates as of October 2026, a single Higher Level subject rebuilt over a full resit cycle lands somewhere between roughly AED 4,500 at budget online rates and roughly AED 16,000 at premium specialist rates, for thirty to thirty-six hours of teaching. The entry is charged separately by your school or exam centre and is not a tutoring cost at all.

The table below is built from the cheapest option upwards, which is the opposite of how most tutoring sites present it, and the order matters. The budget band is real: EdFlik publishes from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52, both for online delivery with tutors who are often university students. For a Standard Level subject where the student mostly needs structure and accountability, that band can genuinely be enough. For a Higher Level resit where the losing component is Mathematics Paper 3, it is not, and paying it twice costs more than paying the specialist rate once.

What raises your own number in this emirate is subject rarity and timing, not postcode. A Biology Standard Level resit is cheap to staff anywhere. A Computer Science Higher Level resit in Al Ain in September is expensive to staff anywhere, because there are very few people who can teach it and the calendar gives them no slack. IB Gram does not publish an hourly price list on these pages; the free trial lesson and the consultation exist so that a quote is attached to a real plan rather than to a guess.

One figure to keep in view as context: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year. Abu Dhabi fee regulation sits with ADEK and works differently, but the point holds for budgeting across the Gulf: school fees are the fixed cost in a family's education spend and tutoring is the variable one, which is exactly why a resit plan should be scoped to a named component rather than booked open-ended.

What you can resit, and what you are stuck with

  • Re-register by named subject, not by Diploma
  • Identify the failing component before booking any hours
  • Ask the IB coordinator in writing whether the internal assessment mark carries forward
  • TOK and Extended Essay bonus points affect the Diploma total independently
  • Grades do not average across attempts; the result that stands is the one used

A retake is organised by subject, and inside a subject it is organised by component. That is the fact that decides whether your money is well spent. A Diploma candidate re-registers for named subjects in a later session and sits the external papers again; the internally assessed component may in many subjects be carried forward from the first attempt rather than redone. You are not resitting the Diploma, you are resitting the parts of it that lost points.

This means the first piece of work is not teaching at all. It is reading the subject grade breakdown your school can obtain and identifying which component underperformed. A Chemistry Higher Level 5 can be a 5 because Paper 2 went badly, or because the internal assessment mark was low, or because Paper 1 timing collapsed. Those are three different plans with three different costs, and only one of them is worth thirty hours. Where the internal assessment mark was the weak part and the subject permits new work, the decision is more complex and needs the IB coordinator's input before any tuition is booked.

There are limits worth knowing before you build hopes on the outcome. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay feed the bonus points through a matrix, so a resit strategy that ignores them can leave a candidate one point short of a Diploma total for reasons unconnected to the subject being retaken. Your school's IB coordinator is the authority on what your child specifically may and may not re-register for, and on whether the existing internal assessment mark stands. We plan the teaching around their answer; we do not substitute for it.

The honest framing is this: a resit changes a subject grade, and a subject grade sometimes changes a university outcome. It does not rewrite two years. Families who get the best value from a retake tutor are the ones who arrive with the grade breakdown in hand, name the component, and ask for twenty hours on that component rather than a general course in the subject.

03

The November session counted backwards

Nobody in this search results page publishes a calendar, which is strange, because the calendar is the thing a resit family most needs. The IB assesses in two sessions each year, May and November. UAE schools sit the May session; the November session is the resit route most Abu Dhabi families use, because it is the first opportunity after results and it lands before most university deferral deadlines bite.

The table works backwards from the papers rather than forwards from today, because every deadline that matters is a subtraction. Note what it does not contain: specific dates. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so no exam or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB directly, and publishing one would be publishing a guess. Confirm every date with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org before you act on it. What is reliable is the order of events and the gaps between them, and that is what you plan against.

The gap that catches people is the first row. Re-registration closes months before the papers, and it closes while results are still being digested and university appeals are still open. A family that spends six weeks deciding whether to retake has, in several cases we have seen, decided correctly and then missed the entry. For Cambridge and Pearson qualifications the same structural point is documented and dated: Pearson's International GCSE November 2026 timetable ran to 19 November 2026 with results reaching students in January, and the November 2025 results landed on 22 January 2026. Entry closed long before any of that.

Build the teaching plan into the gaps the table shows. The weeks immediately after registration are for content repair, the middle block is for component-specific technique, and the final six weeks are for full timed papers and nothing else. A plan that is still teaching new content in the last fortnight has been mis-scoped, and that is a scoping failure rather than a student failure.

Online versus an in-home retake tutor in Abu Dhabi

Parents searching for a retake tutor in Abu Dhabi often mean someone who will come to the villa. It is worth answering that properly rather than deflecting it. In-home tutoring in the UAE is a real market with real prices: Bestimate's Dubai figures run AED 180-350 an hour, independent home tutors ask AED 200-500, and monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions are advertised around AED 1,599-1,799. That premium over online is mostly travel. A tutor crossing from the island to Khalifa City in the evening is paid for the journey whether anyone calls it that or not.

The trade-off that actually matters for a resit is not comfort, it is the size of the pool you choose from. Insisting on in-home narrows the shortlist to people who both teach the exact subject at the exact level and live within a sensible drive. For Biology Standard Level in Khalifa City that is a workable constraint. For Mathematics Analysis and Approaches Higher Level Paper 3, or Computer Science Higher Level, or Economics Higher Level Paper 3, it usually produces either nobody or somebody who teaches the subject one level below the one your child is resitting.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Lessons to Abu Dhabi families are delivered one-to-one over live video, and home tutoring is a service we provide only in India. We say that plainly because the alternative is wasting your time, and because for a resit the online route is genuinely the stronger one: the student gets the specialist, the session happens on time regardless of Mussafah traffic or weather, every worked solution is captured on a shared screen and can be reopened in October, and nobody loses a session because a tutor is stuck on the bridge.

One further practical point specific to a resit year. If your child has left school, the day has holes in it that did not exist before, and online delivery can use them. A 14:00 session on a Tuesday is possible for an online tutor in a different time zone and almost never possible for a local in-home tutor who is teaching in a school until 15:30. Cheaper hours and better hours are the same hours here.

Reading the results sheet before spending anything

  • Request the component-level grade breakdown through the school, not just the grade
  • Flat under-performance across components points to timing, not content
  • One collapsed component points to a short clinic rather than a full rebuild
  • A weak internal assessment mark needs the coordinator's answer before planning
  • An enquiry upon results is sometimes cheaper and faster than retaking

The grade on the certificate is a summary. The useful document is the component breakdown, which your school can obtain and which shows how each paper and the internal assessment contributed. Until you have it, any retake plan is a guess, and a guessed plan is how families end up paying for thirty hours of general subject revision to fix a problem that lived in one paper.

Three patterns recur in Abu Dhabi resit candidates, and each points to a different and differently priced intervention. The first is a flat profile: every component a little below target, which usually means timing and exam-day execution rather than knowledge, and which responds to a block of full timed papers more than to content teaching. The second is a single collapsed component against sound performance elsewhere, which points to the component clinic and is the cheapest fix available. The third is a weak internal assessment mark with strong papers, which is the awkward case, because whether that can be changed at all depends on the subject and on what the coordinator says.

There is a fourth possibility that is not a tutoring problem. Where the breakdown looks inconsistent with everything the student produced across two years, an enquiry upon results is a cheaper and faster route than a resit, and it has its own short window immediately after results. We will say so when the breakdown suggests it. A tutoring business that never mentions the remark route is a tutoring business optimising for its own hours rather than your outcome.

Practically: ask the school for the breakdown the week results arrive, put it next to the student's own mock and internal assessment record, and look for the gap between the two. Where the mocks were consistently stronger than the final papers, you have an execution problem. Where the mocks predicted the result accurately, you have a content problem. Those cost different amounts and take different amounts of time, and knowing which you have is worth more than the first five hours of any tutor's time.

06

ADEK, your old school, and who registers a resit candidate

Private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are licensed and inspected by ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which u.ae describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK is named by none of the competitor pages researched for this project, which is a strange gap given that it is the authority every Abu Dhabi school answers to. It regulates schools. It does not regulate tutoring rates and it does not approve tutors, and any page telling you otherwise is selling you something.

ADEK matters to a resit family for a different reason. Its professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from giving paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct making the same point. So the apparently obvious move, hiring your child's own subject teacher privately for the resit, is the one move to avoid. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it, but treat the direction of travel as settled.

On the registration question, the position in this emirate varies by school and nobody can answer it for you from a web page. Some Abu Dhabi schools will register a former student as a resit candidate for a later session as a matter of course. Others will not once the student has left, in which case you need an exam centre that accepts external candidates and you need it before the registration window closes. Ask in writing, ask the IB coordinator rather than the admissions office, and ask in the first fortnight after results.

Separately, on tutor legality: individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, the eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and tutoring without one exposes the individual to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you. IB Gram holds no ADEK, KHDA, MoE, IB or Cambridge approval, accreditation or partnership, and does not claim any.

07

What a tutor may and may not touch on a resit

  • A tutor teaches criteria, reviews drafts and marks practice work
  • A tutor does not write, rewrite to completion, or supply text
  • Academic-honesty findings fall on the student, not the tutor
  • No grade or score guarantee is offered on any IB Gram page
  • Official papers and mark schemes are linked, never redistributed

If your child's internal assessment is in scope for the resit, the honesty boundary becomes the most important thing on this page. The IB's academic-honesty rules make the assessed work the student's own, and a breach is a malpractice finding against the student, not against the tutor. The consequences land on the person whose name is on the Diploma.

So here is the line, stated plainly. A tutor may teach the assessment criteria and what each one actually rewards. A tutor may discuss whether a proposed research question is answerable in the word count. A tutor may read a draft the student wrote and give feedback at the level of structure, argument and evidence. A tutor may teach referencing conventions and data-presentation technique. A tutor may mark practice work and explain where the marks went.

A tutor may not write any part of the work, supply text to be inserted, rewrite a paragraph into its final form, choose the research question outright, generate the data, or edit a draft to completion. There is a competitor in this market selling completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. That is not a cheaper version of tutoring; it is an expulsion risk sold at a price, and it is the single reason to be sceptical of any resit offer phrased around a guaranteed outcome.

The same boundary is why we publish no grade guarantee. A resit plan can change what a student knows, how fast they work and how accurately they answer a command term. It cannot promise a 7, and anyone promising one on a page like this is either misunderstanding the assessment or hoping you will not check. We also will not reproduce or supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents as downloads. We cite them and link to the official source, which is both the lawful route and the one that keeps your child looking at the current version.

08

The mandatory UAE subjects, and why a resit year does not excuse them

A detail that catches families whose child has left school for the resit year. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in UAE private schools alongside whatever international curriculum the school is licensed for; the federal position is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, while adhering to the Ministry's general regulations. In Dubai, KHDA's published requirements were to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. ADEK applies the equivalent requirement in Abu Dhabi.

For a student still enrolled while resitting, that means the week is fuller than the resit plan assumes, and the resit sessions have to fit around mandatory-subject lessons that cannot be dropped. KHDA's guidance calculates mandatory-subject time on a forty-minute lesson unit, allows schools to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and advises that no mandatory-subject lesson runs shorter than twenty-five minutes. Those are real hours in a real timetable, and a plan drawn up without them is a plan that collapses in week three.

The organisational rules are specific too, and worth knowing if Arabic is the subject being resat or supported. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language. Schools must ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval.

One constraint applies to tutoring content directly: for the mandatory UAE subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior MoE permission is strictly prohibited. So Arabic support in a resit year works from the school's own materials and the official programme, not from an alternative course a tutor prefers. That is a narrower brief than parents expect, and stating it is more useful than pretending the constraint does not exist.

MoE equivalency, and what the resit grade is actually for

Many Abu Dhabi resits are driven by a university condition rather than by the grade itself, so it is worth being precise about what the UAE Ministry of Education requires, and equally precise about what nobody can confirm. For the British track the requirements are published: students must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level at a grade no lower than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, and must pass five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at a grade no lower than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic Education are not counted among those five.

That five-subject figure is worth stating because a currently ranking competitor publishes six, and a parent acting on six when the rule is five either sits an unnecessary exam or draws the wrong conclusion about their child's position. For the American track, English proficiency is met by an IELTS academic score of 5, a TOEFL iBT score of 61, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and mathematics requires at least 450 in SAT Math before applying.

For the IB there is no equivalency points threshold on this page, and that is deliberate. The source that documents the British and American tracks states no IB points figure, and publishing an unsourced one would be publishing a liability on a page a parent acts on. Check moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation authority directly, and treat any site quoting you an IB equivalency score without a government source as unreliable. Equivalency and attestation are processes you complete with the authority; IB Gram does not perform them, does not guarantee an outcome, and is not an intermediary in them.

The practical upshot for a resit decision is to find out what the grade is actually needed for before paying for it. A UK offer with a specific subject grade condition is a clear case. A general preference for a higher total is a weaker one. And no part of equivalency, admission or progression requires tutoring; anybody implying that it does is making a false-urgency claim about a regulatory process.

Ramadan, Gulf Standard Time and when a resit session actually happens

  • Sessions on Gulf Standard Time; 16:00-21:00 for students still enrolled
  • Daytime slots are available and easier to staff for students out of school
  • Ramadan shifts sessions to post-Iftar rather than cancelling them
  • Summer travel usually collides with the content-repair block
  • Write the lost weeks into the plan before the plan starts

A resit cycle that runs from the summer through to November crosses the whole shape of the UAE year, and the scheduling realities are not decoration. Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time, and the usable evening window for a student still at school is roughly 16:00 to 21:00 after the commute home from an island or mainland school. For a student not enrolled during the resit year, the best hours are the daytime ones nobody else wants, and those are also the hours when a specialist in another time zone is most easily available.

Where Ramadan falls inside a resit cycle, timings shift rather than stop. School days shorten, the family rhythm reorganises around Iftar, and the productive study window for many students moves to after the evening meal. A plan that keeps insisting on a 17:00 session through Ramadan will lose sessions. One that moves to post-Iftar for the month keeps the continuity, and continuity is what a resit plan is actually built from.

The other calendar items worth building around are the school holidays and the family travel that tends to attach to them. Abu Dhabi families travel in the summer, which is exactly when a November resit plan needs its content-repair block. Online delivery survives that; an in-home arrangement does not, because the tutor is in Khalifa City and the student is not. Session continuity across travel is one of the quieter reasons the online route works better for resits specifically.

Practically, agree the week-by-week shape at the start and write down the weeks you already know will be lost. A thirty-six-hour plan with six weeks of travel in it is a thirty-hour plan, and discovering that in August is free while discovering it in October costs you the grade. Build the losses in, then protect what is left.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is not one catchment. Where you live changes which schools your child attended, what the evening looks like, and therefore when a resit session can realistically start. These are the parts of the emirate retake students actually come from.

Abu Dhabi Island

The oldest school stock and the densest. Apartment living means a quiet room for a two-hour online session is a genuine constraint, and families often shift sessions later to after the younger children are down.

Khalifa City

Villa communities feeding several international schools licensed by ADEK. Retake students here are usually at home for the resit year rather than enrolled, which makes daytime sessions possible and makes mid-afternoon the cheapest time in the week to teach.

Al Raha and Al Raha Beach

A short commute to the island schools and a long one to anywhere else. A resit candidate no longer doing the school run gains back ninety minutes a day, and that recovered time is the main reason a compressed November plan works here.

Saadiyat Island

Low-density, high-fee schooling with small DP cohorts, which means a retake student may be the only one in the emirate resitting that subject. There is no local study group to fall back on, so the tutoring has to carry more of the load.

Yas Island

Newer schools with younger DP cohorts and fewer years of results history. Families here often have less school-side experience of resit registration, so the administrative question needs asking earlier than elsewhere.

Al Reef and Al Shamkha

Mainland communities with long school commutes and a strong Indian and Arab resident mix. Arabic B and Mathematics resits cluster here, and post-Iftar session timing during Ramadan matters more than it does on the island.

Al Ain

Also under ADEK, ninety minutes inland, and almost entirely without local IB subject specialists at Higher Level. Online delivery is not a preference in Al Ain; it is the only way a student gets a Chemistry HL resit teacher at all.

Al Mushrif and Al Bateen

Established central districts with a long-settled professional population and a high proportion of students carrying conditional offers to UK and UAE universities, which is the circumstance that makes a resit worth the money rather than a matter of pride.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Island and Saadiyat

The emirate's longest-established international provision. Resit candidates from these schools usually have a clear subject grade breakdown and an IB coordinator who has handled a November registration before, which makes the administrative side straightforward. Named here as context for the local schooling landscape only.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and the mainland

Where most of the emirate's villa-community DP students sit. Cohorts are larger and subject choice at Higher Level is broader, but a specialist in a minority Higher Level subject is still hard to find locally. Listed as ecosystem context.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Yasmina British Academy
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Al Muna Academy

Al Ain

A separate catchment under the same regulator, with a smaller set of international schools and the thinnest local tutor pool in the emirate. Families here routinely plan resits without any in-person specialist option. Context only.

  • Al Ain English Speaking School
  • The Glenelg School of Abu Dhabi
  • Emirates National Schools Al Ain
  • Liwa International School Al Ain

Schools are named as context for the Abu Dhabi education landscape; no affiliation, partnership or endorsement is implied, and IB Gram is not connected to any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the grade breakdown

Share the subject grade breakdown, the subjects and levels under consideration, and the deadline the grade is needed for. Without the breakdown the first session is spent diagnosing what a document would have told us in five minutes, and you pay for that session.

  2. 02

Confirm the administration with your school

Before any teaching is planned, confirm with your IB coordinator that your child can re-register through the school or an accepting centre, which subjects are in scope, and whether the existing internal assessment mark carries forward. That answer shapes the plan and the cost.

  3. 03

Scope the plan to a component

We propose a named number of hours against the specific component that lost the marks, with the week-by-week shape and the lost weeks already built in. You get the hour count and the structure before you commit to anything.

  4. 04

    Free trial lesson

One lesson with the proposed tutor, on the actual component, at no charge. You see the teaching rather than a profile. If the match is wrong we offer a different tutor rather than asking you to persist with one that is not working.

  5. 05

    Teach, then test

Content repair first, component technique second, full timed papers last. Written feedback after each marked piece. A progress review every fourth session that either confirms the hour count or tells you honestly that it needs to change.

  6. 06

Hand back to the exam centre

In the final fortnight the work is timed papers and logistics: the correct timetable confirmed with your centre, the zone checked, the materials ready. We stop adding content, because at that point adding content costs marks rather than earning them.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The money is on the page

Three of six researched competitors publish no price at all, and the two that do quote USD. This page gives AED bands with the provider who published each one and the month they were read, so you can check the figures rather than take them on faith.

Component-level planning, not course repetition

A resit plan built around the paper that lost the marks costs a fraction of a plan built around the whole subject, and usually moves the grade further. That requires reading the breakdown first, which is why we ask for it before quoting hours.

The calendar, counted backwards

The November session is a sequence of subtractions from the papers, and the entry deadline sits months ahead of them. No competitor page researched names a session or a deadline at all. Missing the entry is the one failure no amount of teaching fixes.

A specialist, not a neighbour

Online delivery means the Economics Higher Level Paper 3 teacher rather than whoever is within a drive of Al Raha. For a resit, where the whole problem is usually one specialised component, that is the difference between hours that work and hours that pass.

Honest about the boundary

We teach criteria, review drafts the student wrote, and mark practice work. We do not write assessed work, and we say so because a competitor in this market sells completed Internal Assessments and that is an expulsion risk for your child, not a shortcut.

Sourced, not asserted

Every regulatory statement here points to u.ae, KHDA, MoHRE or a dated news source. We publish no self-assigned star rating, no unsourced statistic, and no IB exam date we could not confirm, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much should an IB retake tutor in Abu Dhabi cost in total, not per hour?+

Think in hours, then multiply. One Higher Level subject rebuilt across a full resit cycle is typically thirty to thirty-six teaching hours. At the published UAE qualified-tutor band of AED 150-300 an hour that is roughly AED 4,500 to AED 10,800; at specialist rates of AED 200-450 and above it runs higher. Those are market figures from Unitors, TutorChase and Bestimate as read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list. Exam entry is charged separately by your school or centre. A short component clinic of four to six sessions can cost a fraction of that and sometimes moves the grade just as far.

Is retaking one Higher Level subject cheaper than retaking two Standard Level ones?+

Usually yes, and not by a small margin. A single Higher Level subject concentrates every hour on one set of papers and one failing component, so thirty hours all point the same way. Two Standard Level subjects split the hours, duplicate the diagnostic work and double the practice the student has to complete between sessions, while the week stays the same length. Paper technique does transfer between subjects, which is why two subjects is not quite double the cost, but it is close. The better question is which grade the university condition actually names, because retaking a subject nobody asked about is the most expensive mistake available here.

Why does an in-home retake tutor in Abu Dhabi cost more than an online one?+

Almost all of the gap is travel. Published UAE in-home rates run roughly AED 180-500 an hour against AED 150-300 online, and a tutor crossing from Abu Dhabi Island to Khalifa City in evening traffic is being paid for that journey whether the invoice itemises it or not. The second cost is hidden: insisting on in-home shrinks your shortlist to specialists who live within a drive, which for a minority Higher Level subject often means nobody suitable. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE. Lessons to Abu Dhabi families are delivered one-to-one over live video, and home tutoring is an India-only service for us.

When does registration for a November IB resit actually close?+

Months before the papers, which is the detail that catches families out. Re-registration closes while results are still being discussed and while university appeals are still live, so the decision has to be made faster than it feels reasonable to make it. We do not publish a specific date on this page because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unconfirmed date is worse than no date. Ask your school's IB coordinator in the first fortnight after results, in writing, and ask them for the centre's internal cut-off too, which is usually earlier than the IB's own.

Can my child keep the Internal Assessment mark from the first attempt?+

In many subjects yes, and in some the option exists to submit new work instead, but the answer is subject-specific and your IB coordinator is the authority on your child's case. It matters financially as well as academically: if the papers were the problem and the internal assessment mark was sound, carrying it forward means every tutoring hour goes into paper technique. If the internal assessment was the weak component, the plan and the cost are different, and you need the coordinator's written answer before booking any hours. We plan the teaching around their decision rather than guessing at it.

Would an enquiry upon results be cheaper than paying for a retake?+

Sometimes, and it is worth checking before you spend anything. Where the component breakdown looks inconsistent with everything the student produced across two years, a remark is faster and cheaper than a resit, and it has a short window immediately after results. Your school administers it. We will say so when the breakdown points that way, because a tutoring plan sold over the top of an unexplored remark route is a tutoring plan optimising for our hours rather than your outcome. If the remark changes nothing, the resit route is still open and you have lost only a few weeks.

Which IB subjects do Abu Dhabi students retake most often?+

Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level leads clearly, usually because of Paper 3, the extended investigative paper. Chemistry Higher Level and Physics Higher Level follow, with the losses concentrated in topics taught late in the second year when coursework pressure peaks. Economics Higher Level appears regularly because of Paper 3, the quantitative paper. Computer Science Higher Level is less common but often the most improvable, because the recurring loss is pseudocode convention under timing rather than any real gap in understanding. Each of those is a different plan with a different hour count.

Is there any local IB specialist in Al Ain for a Higher Level resit?+

Rarely at Higher Level, and this is the honest answer rather than a sales line. Al Ain sits under ADEK like Abu Dhabi city but has a much smaller set of international schools and correspondingly few resident subject specialists at Diploma Higher Level. Families there who insist on an in-person tutor usually end up with someone teaching a level below the one being resat. Online delivery is not a second-best option in Al Ain; it is how a student there gets a Chemistry Higher Level or Computer Science Higher Level teacher at all. Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time either way.

Does ADEK approve or license private tutors in Abu Dhabi?+

No. ADEK licenses and inspects private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, as u.ae sets out, and publishes its own school inspection ratings. It does not approve individual tutors and it does not set tutoring rates. The permit that applies to an individual tutor is the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. Any tutoring page describing itself as ADEK-approved or KHDA-approved without holding the specific permit involved is making a claim it cannot support. IB Gram holds no such approval and does not claim one.

Can we hire my child's own school teacher privately for the resit?+

Avoid it. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as barring teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct making the same point about students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document, but treat the direction as settled. Beyond the rules, there is a practical reason: the teacher who taught the course the first time is the least likely person to spot why the delivery did not land.

How late is too late to start a November resit plan?+

The registration deadline is the real cut-off, not the teaching one. Once entry is secured, a six to eight week intensive of two sessions a week built entirely around timed papers can still move a grade, particularly where the problem is execution rather than content. What it cannot do is rebuild a topic that was never learned, and it costs more per grade point than starting in the summer because you are buying intensity to replace time. If you are inside eight weeks, the first conversation should be about scope reduction: one component, not one subject.

Will a tutor help my child redo the Internal Assessment if that is the weak part?+

Within the IB's academic-honesty boundary, and the boundary is firm. A tutor may teach the assessment criteria and what each rewards, discuss whether a research question is answerable in the word count, read a draft the student has written and give feedback on structure, argument and evidence, teach referencing and data presentation, and mark practice work. A tutor may not write any part of it, supply text to insert, rewrite a paragraph to its final form, choose the question outright or generate the data. A breach is a malpractice finding against the student. There is a provider in this market selling completed Internal Assessments; that is an expulsion risk with a price tag.

Do resit grades get averaged with the first attempt?+

No. The two attempts do not average. The Diploma is reissued using the subject results that stand after the resit, which is why a retake is worth considering at all. Your IB coordinator can confirm exactly how this works for your child's registration and which results appear on the reissued documents. The practical consequence is that a resit carries upside without arithmetic downside to the subject grade, so the decision turns entirely on cost, time and whether the grade is actually needed for something specific rather than on any risk of making the result worse.

Can sessions move during Ramadan or while the family travels in summer?+

Yes, and they should. During Ramadan the productive study window for many students moves to after Iftar, and a plan insisting on a 17:00 session through the month will simply lose sessions. Summer travel is the bigger practical problem, because it usually collides with the content-repair block a November plan depends on. Online delivery survives a family moving between Abu Dhabi and abroad; an in-home arrangement does not. Write the weeks you already know will be lost into the plan before it starts, then protect the rest, because continuity is what a resit cycle is actually built on.

Can IB Gram guarantee the grade goes up after a retake?+

No, and nobody honestly can. A resit plan changes what a student knows, how quickly they work, and how accurately they read a command term. It cannot promise a 7 or any specific grade movement, and a page offering that guarantee is either misunderstanding the assessment or hoping you will not check. What we will commit to is a named hour count against a named component, written feedback on every marked piece, a progress review every fourth session, and an honest statement if the plan needs changing. We also publish no self-assigned star rating and no statistic without its source.

What does the resit grade actually need to be for before we pay for it?+

Find out first, because the answer changes whether the spend makes sense. A UK or UAE university offer naming a specific subject grade is a clear case for a resit. A general wish for a higher total is weaker, especially once the hour cost is on the table. UAE Ministry of Education equivalency has published requirements for the British and American tracks, but no IB points threshold appears in the source used here, so check moe.gov.ae or the emirate attestation authority directly. No part of equivalency, admission or progression requires tutoring, and any page implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency.

Start with the breakdown, not the booking

If you are weighing an IB retake tutor in Abu Dhabi, the cheapest useful hour you will spend is the one before you book anything: get the component grade breakdown from your school, ask the IB coordinator in writing whether your child can re-register and whether the internal assessment mark carries forward, and find out exactly which grade the university condition names. Send us those three answers and we will propose a named hour count against the specific component that lost the marks, with the lost weeks already built in. A free trial lesson with the proposed tutor comes first, delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so you watch the teaching before you commit to the plan.
