IB Score 45 Coaching in Abu Dhabi

IB score 45 coaching in Abu Dhabi is worth very little as motivation and a great deal as arithmetic. A 45 is six subject grades of 7 plus the maximum available from the core, which means it is not one ambitious target but seven separate ones, each with its own criteria and its own failure mode. This page breaks the number down, names where a 7 slips to a 6, and sets out the evidence to keep. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

  • Every session anchored to marked work against the published criteria

Six sevens and the core: breaking a single number into seven jobs

A perfect Diploma score is built from six subject grades of 7, giving 42, plus the points available from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay taken together, which brings the maximum to 45. That is the entire structure, and writing it out matters because the framing changes what a candidate does with their year. A student chasing a single number works harder at everything. A student who understands they are chasing seven separate judgements, each assessed against its own published criteria, works on the two that are furthest from target and protects the rest.

That redistribution is the whole value of coaching at this level. A candidate at 41 or 42 predicted is almost never uniformly short. They are typically a 7 in three subjects, a secure 6 in two with a specific identifiable gap, and carrying an Extended Essay that has not been looked at properly since the first draft. Those three problems have nothing in common and each responds to a different kind of work. Treating them as one problem called revision is how a strong candidate finishes where they started.

The second thing worth saying early is that a 45 is not primarily a knowledge target. Candidates at this level know the content. What separates the top band from the one below is precision: command terms answered exactly, method lines written out, evaluation reached rather than implied, uncertainty discussed rather than calculated, an internal assessment that addresses every criterion rather than most of them. These are narrow, nameable behaviours, and that is good news, because narrow things can be fixed inside a term.

There is also a structural point about the Diploma that top candidates learn late. The award of the diploma carries conditions beyond a points total, including minimum totals at higher and standard level, limits on how many low grades a candidate may hold, and a grade E in Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay as a failing condition. A candidate chasing 45 is nowhere near those limits, but the existence of the core as a failing condition is the reason the Extended Essay deserves attention in the autumn rather than in the week before submission. Confirm the current conditions with your school's IB coordinator, because they are set by the IB and not by us.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address; home visits are a service we offer only in India. At the top of the grade range the practical consequence is the pool: a candidate needing someone who can mark HL Chemistry to the published criteria and then discuss an Extended Essay in the same subject is choosing a specialist, not a neighbour. In Abu Dhabi that pool is small on the ground and considerably larger online.

At a glance

  • 42 from six subject grades of 7, plus the points available from the core, gives a maximum of 45
  • A candidate at 41 is usually short in two specific places, not uniformly short everywhere
  • At this level the gap is precision against the criteria rather than missing content
  • A grade E in Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay is a failing condition for the diploma
  • This page publishes no IB session or results dates; confirm those with your coordinator
  • No guarantee of any score appears here, and no statistic without a stated method
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A 45 is a Diploma outcome, but the habits behind it are built across the IB continuum. These are the programmes running in Abu Dhabi schools and what each contributes to a candidate who ends up at the top of the range.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Nothing here is graded on the Diploma scale, but the inquiry habit and the expectation of written justification are where top Diploma candidates usually began. Students who learn early to explain why rather than state what arrive in the Diploma with the one skill that distinguishes the top band in every subject group.

Abu Dhabi PYP schools report against the programme's framework rather than against marks, which makes it hard for parents to spot early strength. The useful proxy is whether a child can explain their reasoning aloud, which is a better predictor of Diploma performance than any primary score.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP criteria A to D with their published descriptors are the first place a student meets criterion-referenced assessment, which is exactly how Diploma internal assessment works. A student who learns in MYP 4 to read a descriptor and write to it has a genuine head start on the component that most often costs a Diploma candidate their seventh point.

Where an Abu Dhabi school runs MYP to Year 11, the eAssessment route gives useful practice in writing to criteria under conditions. Where the school switches to IGCSE at Year 10, the Extended tier provides examination practice instead but less criterion-referenced work, which is worth compensating for in the first Diploma year.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The programme where the number is decided. Three subjects at higher level, three at standard level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity and service. The points come from the six subjects and the core, and a candidate at the top of the range is managing seven assessments rather than six subjects.

Abu Dhabi Diploma candidates normally sit the May session. Internal deadlines for the Extended Essay and for internal assessment are set by each school rather than by the IB, and they vary widely across the emirate, which means a 45 campaign has to be planned against your own school's calendar.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

CP candidates take DP courses and are graded on them, but the CP is not scored out of 45 and does not carry the diploma points structure. A family arriving at this page while their child is on the CP should be clear on that distinction before setting a target, and should ask the school how their destination universities read the qualification.

A small number of Abu Dhabi schools offer the CP, and recognition varies by destination. The reflective project has its own internal deadlines, which in practice compete with DP subject assessment in the same weeks.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

At the top of the range, the difference between a 6 and a 7 is specific in every subject. These notes name the behaviour rather than the topic, because content is rarely the limiting factor for a candidate at this level.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The seventh point at HL is usually found in Paper 3, where the extended investigation rewards a structured approach that can be learned as a form. Proof questions divide the band: candidates who assert a result where a derivation was required lose marks they had the mathematics to earn.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Top marks turn on interpretation rather than computation. A statistical test run correctly and concluded without reference to the significance level and the context scores below a response that does both, and that difference recurs across every paper in the course.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The 7 is lost in two places: data questions where uncertainty is calculated but neither propagated nor discussed, and extended answers where a correct mechanism is given without the reasoning the mark scheme credits. The internal assessment is the other half, and it is where a careful candidate gains most.

Physics

HL and SL

At the top of the range marks go on long-answer reasoning in fields and circular motion, and on graph questions where a gradient is found and not interpreted. A candidate who writes the physical reasoning line before the algebra rarely loses these marks.

Biology

HL and SL

The most command-term sensitive subject in the Diploma. A 7 requires answering evaluate as evaluate and suggest as suggest, every time, under time pressure. Candidates at this level lose the seventh point to precision rather than to knowledge, which makes it among the most recoverable.

Economics

HL and SL

Evaluation marks are the band divider, and they are lost by stopping after analysis. Diagram accuracy with fully labelled axes carries marks that strong candidates give away casually. HL quantitative questions reward interpretation of the number rather than the number itself.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The top band requires an argument sustained across a whole response rather than a sequence of accurate observations. Paper 2 rewards genuine comparison rather than two readings in sequence, and the HL essay is frequently the component where a 6 becomes a 7 because it is written under less pressure.

History

HL and SL

Source questions reward provenance used analytically, and essays reward an argument held past the first paragraph. At the top of the range the losses are structural: a strong thesis followed by narrative, or a comparison written as two separate descriptions.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

The core carries the points that take 42 to 45 and also carries a failing condition, since a grade E in either prevents the award of the diploma. Both are assessed against published criteria, both are written over months, and both are the components a strong candidate is most likely to leave until they are urgent.

Arabic and UAE social studies alongside the Diploma

School-set

These subjects are taught alongside the licensed international curriculum in UAE private schools and occupy real timetable hours. For a candidate planning a 45 campaign they are fixed load, and a plan that quietly assumes they can be deprioritised has overstated the available week.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of work for a candidate near the top of the range, distinguished by which of the seven targets is furthest from where it needs to be.

Two-subject precision block

The commonest shape. Two subjects where a secure 6 needs to become a 7, taught through marked timed work against the published criteria rather than through content coverage. Sessions are short and frequent because the work is habit correction, and each one produces something marked and dated.

  • Diagnostic marked paper per subject before anything is planned
  • Each session targets one named behaviour, not a topic list
  • Marked timed section every second session to test whether it held
  • Content teaching only where a marked paper proves a genuine gap

Core points block

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay taken seriously in the autumn rather than the week before submission. Feedback is given on the student's own draft against the published criteria; the tutor does not write, complete or produce any part of the work. For a candidate at 42 or 43 this is frequently where the remaining points are.

  • Feedback mapped to criterion letters and their descriptors
  • Comments returned on the student's own draft for them to act on
  • Research question and scope interrogated early, not after the first draft
  • Dated feedback log kept so authorship of the work is demonstrable

Full-profile review, single session

One session spent on the whole picture rather than on one subject: current predicted grades, the most recent marked work in each subject, internal assessment and Extended Essay status, and the school's internal deadlines. The output is a written ranking of where the remaining points realistically sit.

  • All seven targets reviewed, not just the weakest subject
  • Written ranking of where points are recoverable and where they are not
  • Honest statement when a target is out of reach in the time available
  • No programme attached; families often act on this alone

The arithmetic of 45, written out

Six subjects, each graded 1 to 7, give a maximum of 42. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together contribute the remaining points through the published diploma points matrix, bringing the maximum to 45. A standard Diploma has at least three subjects at higher level and the rest at standard level, and the core also includes creativity, activity and service, which is a requirement rather than a source of points.

Setting it out this way does two useful things. It converts a single intimidating number into a list, and it shows immediately that the core is not a formality: it is the difference between 42 and 45, and it is assessed against its own published criteria, written over months, and entirely within the candidate's control in a way that an examination is not. Candidates who treat the Extended Essay as an obligation to be discharged are leaving points on the table that a subject grade cannot replace.

It also exposes where coaching can and cannot help. A candidate predicted 7 in a subject does not need teaching in it; they need to not lose it. A candidate predicted 6 in two subjects needs precision work in exactly those two. A candidate whose Extended Essay research question is too broad in September has a fixable problem and one that becomes unfixable by February. Reading the profile tells you which of these you have, and almost nobody does that reading before buying hours.

The figures in the table below are the structure of the qualification rather than our interpretation of it. Every one of them should be confirmed against your school's IB coordinator or the IB's own published materials, which is also where the current failing conditions and the points matrix live. This page deliberately does not reproduce IB documents or dates; it points at them.

The core: where the last points sit, and the condition nobody mentions

  • The core points are what separate 42 from 45; they are not a formality
  • An Extended Essay is largely decided by its research question, which is a September decision
  • Theory of Knowledge essays lose marks for describing a debate rather than taking a position
  • A grade E in either core component is a failing condition for the diploma

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are assessed independently, each against published criteria, and their grades are combined to produce the core points that take a 42 to a 45. They are also the two components where a strong candidate is most likely to underperform, for a simple structural reason: both are long-range tasks with internal deadlines set by the school, and both compete for attention with subjects that give feedback weekly.

The Extended Essay is the more recoverable of the two and the more commonly mishandled. Its quality is largely decided by the research question, and a research question that is too broad, not answerable within the word limit, or not genuinely located in the subject will cap the grade regardless of how well the essay is written. That is a September problem with a September solution, and a February problem with no solution. A single session interrogating the question before the first draft is one of the highest-value hours available to a candidate at this level.

Theory of Knowledge rewards a different skill, which is the ability to make a knowledge claim, examine it against perspectives, and do so with reference to specific examples rather than general ones. Strong candidates often write fluently and score below their ability because the essay describes a debate rather than taking a position within it. This is a structural habit and it is correctable with marked practice against the criteria.

There is a condition attached that every 45 candidate should know and many do not: a grade E in either Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay is a failing condition for the award of the diploma. A candidate on course for straight sevens is nowhere near an E, but the existence of the condition is the strongest available argument for taking both components seriously early. Confirm the current failing conditions with your coordinator, since they are set by the IB.

03

What a 7 requires that a 6 does not, by subject group

The jump from 6 to 7 is not more content. In every subject group it is a specific increase in precision, and because it is specific it can be targeted. In Group 4 it is command-term exactness and data discussion: uncertainty propagated and its effect on the conclusion discussed, limitations named with their impact, relationships explained rather than described. In Group 5 it is method presentation and, at HL in Analysis and Approaches, the structure of an extended investigation.

In Groups 1 and 2, the language subjects, the 7 lives in sustained argument. A response that makes a series of accurate points about a text sits below one that holds a single line of reading across the whole answer and uses the points as evidence for it. The difference is planning in the first two minutes, which sounds trivial and is worth a band.

In Group 3 it is judgement. Economics responses that analyse and stop sit below those that evaluate with support. History essays that narrate sit below those that argue and sustain it. Business Management responses that name tools sit below those that apply them to the stimulus and reach a conclusion. Each of these is a structural change rather than a knowledge acquisition, and each is demonstrable in a single marked response.

The practical consequence for a candidate with a term available is that the target should be one named behaviour per subject, demonstrated twice in marked work. That is achievable. Raising general performance across six subjects in a term is not, and any plan that proposes it has not read the profile.

04

Where a 7 slips to a 6 in the final weeks

Candidates who lose a seventh point in May usually lose it to something they already knew how to avoid. The largest category is time. A paper where the last extended question is attempted in four minutes loses marks that were fully available, and the cause is almost always over-investment earlier in the paper: a strong candidate writing a six-mark answer to a three-mark question because they can. This is a pacing discipline, it is taught with timed practice rather than with content, and it regresses under pressure unless maintained.

The second category is reversion. A habit corrected in February returns in May, because exam conditions strip away deliberation and leave only what is automatic. Method lines stop being written. Command terms stop being read carefully. Graphs get gradients without interpretation. The defence is repetition under timed conditions close to the session rather than a single correction months earlier, which is why a 45 plan should include timed work in the final weeks even when nothing is wrong.

The third is the internal assessment left at good-enough. A candidate with a strong profile often has an internal assessment that would score well and could score full marks, and the gap is usually one criterion handled thinly: an evaluation that lists limitations without impact, or a conclusion that does not connect back to the research question. Those are an hour's work each and they are worth the same as a mark gained in an examination.

The fourth is the Extended Essay submitted without a final read against the criteria. Candidates proofread for expression and not for criteria coverage, which are different activities. Reading a finished essay with the descriptors beside it, criterion by criterion, routinely finds marks in the conclusion and in the engagement with the research question. It takes one session and it happens after the writing is done.

05

The evidence a candidate at the top of the range should keep

For a 45 campaign the record serves a different purpose than it does for a struggling candidate. It is not there to prove improvement to a teacher; it is there to show the candidate where their own marks are leaking. At this level the leaks are small, consistent and invisible without data, which means the record has to be granular: not a grade per paper, but a count of which error class cost how many marks in each marked piece.

A workable log has four columns: the date, the piece, the error class, and the marks lost to it. Over six weeks the pattern is unambiguous. A candidate who finds that command-term errors cost three marks in one paper, four in the next and three in the one after has a problem worth a session; one who finds a single three-mark loss and nothing since has a one-off. Without the log both look the same, and the second gets treated as the first, which wastes a term.

The internal assessment and Extended Essay feedback belong in the same record, with dates. That serves the diagnostic purpose and a second one: a dated sequence of the student's own drafts with external feedback on each is the clearest demonstration available that the work is theirs. For a high-profile candidate whose work may be scrutinised, that record is worth keeping for its own sake.

What should not be in the record is any projected score. Nobody can convert a set of marked pieces into a predicted total with any reliability, and a tutor who offers a number is offering a guess with a decimal point on it. The log says what has been fixed and what has not. The total is decided in May by examiners, and this page publishes no estimate of it.

06

What nobody can honestly promise about a 45

No tutor can guarantee a score, a grade, or a points total, and nothing on this page should be read as doing so. Where a guarantee appears in this market it is either unenforceable or hedged by conditions that are not displayed alongside it, and the honest position is to state the limit rather than to hide behind the hedge. What can be offered is specific work on specific weaknesses, with marked evidence of whether the weakness reduced.

This page also carries no statistics, which in a market full of them is a deliberate choice. Competitor pages publish satisfaction percentages, median tutor scores and cohort attainment figures with no sample size, date or method stated, and at least one publishes two contradictory figures on the same page. A number without a method is a liability for whoever publishes it and useless to whoever reads it, so there are none here.

Nor should a page in this market claim examiner access. Describing a tutor as an IB examiner without being able to evidence their current status is a misrepresentation, and implying that examiner status gives access to marking decisions, grade boundaries or paper content is worse. If examiner experience is relevant to a candidate, ask for the evidence and ask what specifically it is supposed to deliver.

The last limit is the one families least want to hear. Some candidates are not going to reach 45, and a reasonable adviser says so. A student predicted 38 in October with two subjects at 5 is not two months from a perfect score, and the useful conversation is about where the achievable points are rather than about the headline number. Selling a 45 campaign to that candidate is selling hours, and it costs them the chance to secure the points actually in reach.

07

How sessions run, and the week a 45 campaign actually has

Lessons are one-to-one over live video, with screen sharing, a shared whiteboard and the candidate's own marked work on screen. Gulf Standard Time lessons are scheduled around the Abu Dhabi school week: earlier on Saadiyat and the island where the school run is short, later in Khalifa City and Al Raha, and weekend blocks where weekday evenings are already committed to coursework. During Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar timing without changing the plan.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run only in India. At this level the online format is not a compromise but the only way to reach the right specialist: a candidate needs someone who marks HL Chemistry to the published criteria and can also interrogate an Extended Essay research question in the subject, and the chance that such a person lives within a short drive of a particular Abu Dhabi address is low. In-home rates in the emirate are quoted at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour because the journey is priced in, and the journey contributes nothing here.

On time budgeting: a Diploma candidate in the UAE also carries Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies lessons alongside the programme, because private schools teach these alongside their licensed international curriculum. Any plan built on the assumption that the week contains more discretionary hours than it does will fail in the fourth week, usually by sacrificing the core components first, which are exactly the ones carrying the last three points.

Private schools in Abu Dhabi are overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. One practical caution: ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Where no specialist is free for a subject at the hours needed, we say so and offer a different slot, a later start or a referral rather than filling the hour.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

A 45 campaign is a time-budget problem as much as an academic one, and in Abu Dhabi the time budget depends on the commute. These notes are about how many usable study and session hours a week actually contains.

Saadiyat Island

The shortest school runs in the capital and small Diploma cohorts, which means a candidate can finish school, sit a timed paper and still have the evening. For a top-band candidate managing seven assessments, recovered commuting time is the cheapest resource available.

Al Bateen and Al Mushrif

Established island communities with a high concentration of HL science candidates and manageable travel. Competition for the same tutors peaks here in the autumn, when internal assessment and Extended Essay deadlines land together.

Al Reem Island

Apartment living with minimal travel, suiting the frequent short sessions that criterion-level work benefits from. The practical constraint is a quiet space for a two-hour timed paper rather than the clock.

Khalifa City

A long term-time school run that removes an hour or more from each weekday. Candidates here typically protect two weekday evenings for coursework and put timed papers in a weekend block, which is a workable shape if it is planned in September.

Al Raha and Al Bandar

Close to the main Diploma cluster and generating heavy autumn demand for HL Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics AA. A candidate aiming at the top of the range should book the slot before the Extended Essay deadline rather than after it.

Yas Island and West Yas

A growing second-year cohort with a slow afternoon commute. Top-band candidates here often split the week between one subject session and one core session, which is the right instinct and only works if both are scheduled.

Al Ain

An hour inland, with very few HL specialists physically present. A candidate here wanting an HL Chemistry specialist who can also read an Extended Essay in the subject has no local route to it, which is the practical case for live video.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Saadiyat Diploma schools

Small second-year cohorts where a candidate at the top of the range may have no local peer group at the same level, and where a single HL class means limited internal comparison. That makes externally marked work more informative rather than less.

  • Al Bateen Academy
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas corridor

  • Raha International School
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • Al Yasmina Academy

Mainland and Al Ain

Fewer Diploma schools across a wider geography and the thinnest specialist supply. Candidates here are the most likely to be the strongest in their subject in their school, which is isolating and makes external marked comparison genuinely useful.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Review the whole profile first

Current predicted grades in all six subjects, the most recent marked work in each, and the status of the internal assessments, Theory of Knowledge essay and Extended Essay. A 45 campaign that starts with the weakest subject rather than with the profile usually targets the wrong thing.

  2. 02

Rank where the points actually are

A written ranking of which of the seven targets has recoverable points and which does not, with the reasoning stated. A subject already predicted 7 needs protecting rather than teaching. An Extended Essay with a flawed research question in September is the highest-value item on most lists.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson on a marked piece

One free trial lesson with the subject specialist, on the condition that it is a single lesson, spent on the most recent marked paper read against the criteria. The output is a named behaviour to fix and a stated test for whether it has been fixed.

  4. 04

Short, frequent sessions with marked checks

Precision work responds to frequency rather than duration. Each session targets one named behaviour, each produces something marked and dated, and a timed section every second session tests whether the correction held under pressure. Content teaching happens only where a marked paper proves a genuine gap.

  5. 05

    Protect the core components

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are scheduled in the autumn rather than squeezed in before submission, with feedback given on the student's own draft against the published criteria and logged with dates. We do not write, complete or produce any part of the work.

  6. 06

Say when the target is not reachable

If the profile does not support 45 in the time available, we say so and rank the points that are genuinely in reach instead. That conversation is less enjoyable than agreeing with the target and it is the one that leaves a candidate better off in May.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The number broken into its parts

A 45 is six subject grades of 7 plus the core points, which makes it seven separate judgements rather than one target. Setting that out changes where a candidate spends their term, and it is the single most useful thing this page does. Competitor pages in this market treat the number as a slogan.

The core taken seriously in the autumn

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay carry the points that separate 42 from 45 and a grade E in either is a failing condition. Most candidates leave both until they are urgent. We schedule them early and interrogate the research question before the first draft.

Precision, not coverage

At the top of the range the gap is command-term exactness, method presentation, evaluation reached rather than implied, and uncertainty discussed with its impact. Those are narrow behaviours, which is why they are fixable in a term. Content revision at this level is mostly wasted effort.

No guarantee and no statistics

Nobody can guarantee a score and this page does not. There is also no satisfaction percentage, no cohort attainment figure and no median tutor score here, because no dataset supports one and a number without a method is a liability for the publisher.

Academic honesty as a working limit

Feedback is given on the student's own draft against the published criteria and logged with dates. We do not write, complete or produce assessed work, and IB materials are linked to their official sources rather than hosted. One site in this market sells completed internal assessments outright.

Honest about who will not reach it

A candidate predicted 38 in October with two subjects at 5 is not a 45 candidate, and saying so is more useful than agreeing. The productive version of that conversation ranks the points genuinely in reach, which is usually more than the family expects and in different places.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How is a 45 actually made up in the IB Diploma?+

Six subject grades of 7 give 42, and the remaining points come from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay combined through the published diploma points matrix, for a maximum of 45. A standard Diploma has at least three subjects at higher level, and creativity, activity and service is a completion requirement rather than a source of points. The practical consequence is that a 45 is seven separate judgements, not one, which is why a candidate short of it is usually short in two specific places.

Can coaching realistically take a predicted 42 to a 45?+

It depends entirely on where the three points sit, and that is a reading exercise before it is a teaching one. If they sit in two subjects at a secure 6 with an identifiable precision gap, and in a core component with an addressable weakness, the work is narrow and plausible. If they sit in three subjects where content is genuinely missing, the time usually is not there. Nobody can guarantee an outcome, and this page does not. The honest first step is a profile review.

How much do Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay contribute?+

Together they provide the points that take 42 to the maximum of 45, awarded on a combination of the two grades through the published diploma points matrix. They also carry a failing condition: a grade E in either prevents the award of the diploma. Confirm the current matrix and the current failing conditions with your school's IB coordinator, since both are set by the IB. The practical point is that the core is not a formality and no subject grade can replace the points it carries.

When should my child start work on the Extended Essay?+

Before the first draft, and ideally while the research question is still being chosen. Essay quality is largely determined by that question: one that is too broad, not answerable within the word limit, or not genuinely located in the subject caps the grade regardless of the writing. That is a problem with a September solution and no February solution. A single session interrogating the question is among the highest-value hours available to a candidate at this level.

What separates a 7 from a 6 in the IB sciences?+

Precision rather than content. At the top of the range, marks go to command-term exactness, to data questions where uncertainty is propagated and its effect on the conclusion discussed, and to extended answers where the reasoning line is written out rather than implied. Limitations named without their impact score below limitations named with it. These are narrow behaviours, which is why they can be corrected inside a term and demonstrated in two marked pieces.

Why do strong candidates lose marks on pacing?+

Because capability itself causes it. A strong candidate writes a six-mark answer to a three-mark question because they can, and then has four minutes for the final extended question where real marks were available. The loss is invisible in a grade and obvious in a script: look at where the writing thins out. The repair is timed full papers rather than content work, and it has to be maintained close to the session because pacing discipline regresses under pressure.

Is it worth reviewing a finished internal assessment that already scores well?+

Usually yes, and it is among the cheapest marks available. A strong internal assessment often has one criterion handled thinly, most often an evaluation that lists limitations without impact or a conclusion that does not reconnect to the research question. Reading the piece criterion by criterion with the descriptors beside it takes about an hour and routinely finds marks. The work must remain the student's own; feedback identifies the gap and the student makes the change.

How far can a tutor go in helping with the Extended Essay?+

A tutor can teach the skills it requires, explain the published criteria, discuss the student's own draft, interrogate the research question, point out an unsupported conclusion, and model technique on a different example. A tutor must not write, complete or produce any part of it, or edit it to a finished state. Feedback here is given against criterion letters and logged with dates, which gives the candidate a record that the work is their own if authorship is questioned. Sites selling finished essays are an integrity breach.

Should a candidate aiming at 45 take tutoring in all six subjects?+

Almost never, and doing so is the commonest way to spend a lot and gain little. A subject already predicted 7 needs protecting with timed practice, not teaching. Effort spent revising a subject where no points are available is effort removed from the two where they are. The useful first purchase is a profile review that ranks where the remaining points realistically sit, and most families find the ranking surprising in both directions.

What does top-band IB coaching cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Market rates for IB specialist tuition run AED 200 to AED 450 an hour and above, per Bestimate's Dubai rate table, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, Unitors IB from AED 200 and BartyED AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Qualified subject tutors online sit between AED 150 and AED 300. Those are market figures rather than an IB Gram price list. At this level the hours needed are usually few and specific, so the total matters more than the rate.

How do we know the coaching is working before results arrive?+

By keeping a granular log rather than a general impression. Four columns are enough: the date, the piece, the error class, and the marks lost to it. Over six weeks a real pattern separates itself from a one-off. A candidate losing three or four marks to command terms in every marked piece has something worth a session; one with a single three-mark loss and nothing since does not. No projected total should appear in the log, because nobody can calculate one reliably.

Do you describe your IB tutors as examiners?+

We do not describe tutors as IB or Cambridge examiners unless current examiner status can be evidenced, and we do not use examiner status to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content. Several sites in this market do both. If examiner experience matters to you, ask for evidence of current status and ask what specifically it is supposed to deliver for your child. What a candidate at this level actually needs is someone who marks accurately against the published criteria and explains the marks.

My child is predicted 38. Is a 45 campaign the right plan?+

Probably not, and the honest conversation is more useful than the encouraging one. A candidate at 38 with two subjects at 5 has points available, but they are in different places from a candidate at 42, and chasing a headline number can cost the points genuinely in reach. The productive version ranks every target by how recoverable it is and spends the term on the top of that list. Families usually find there is more available than they thought, in places they had not considered.

Which session do Abu Dhabi candidates sit, and when do internal deadlines fall?+

Abu Dhabi Diploma candidates normally sit the May session. Internal deadlines for internal assessment, the Theory of Knowledge essay and the Extended Essay are set by each school rather than by the IB, and they differ by several weeks across the emirate. Ask your coordinator for the full list in the first weeks of the second year. This page publishes no IB exam or results dates, because the IB's own site could not be verified by automated checking for this project.

Read the profile before buying hours

A 45 is six sevens plus the core, which means the first useful hour is spent reading a profile rather than teaching a subject. Look at all six predicted grades, the most recent marked work in each, and the state of the internal assessments, Theory of Knowledge essay and Extended Essay. Rank where the remaining points are genuinely recoverable and where they are not. Then spend the term on the top two or three items on that list, with marked evidence after each session. Book a free trial lesson with a subject specialist to start that reading, and expect an honest answer about what the time available will support.
