IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

A resit is a narrower problem than a first attempt, and that is good news

A resit is not a repeat of Year 11. Your child has already covered the specification once, sat the papers, and produced a mark on every component. That changes the work completely. A first-attempt student needs coverage; a resit student needs diagnosis. The content gap between a grade 4 and a grade 6 in Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is almost never the whole syllabus. It is usually four or five recurring topics, a set of command terms the student reads wrongly, and about eleven minutes of lost time per paper spent on questions that were never going to land.

That is why an IGCSE resit tutor in Abu Dhabi should begin with the component breakdown rather than a diagnostic test of their own. Cambridge and Pearson both report marks by component, and the school can usually share the statement of results and, where the service applies, request the original script. A session spent reading the real paper tells you more than three sessions of generic revision. If Paper 2 was adequate and Paper 4 collapsed, the problem is extended-response structure and time, not algebra. If both papers lost marks in the same two topics, the problem is content and it is fixable in a known number of hours.

Timing matters more in a resit than anywhere else in the IGCSE system, because the entry deadline sits months before the paper. Cambridge offers UAE candidates two series, June and November, and the entry for each closes long before the first paper: a June entry is settled during the spring term and a November entry over the summer, on a date the centre confirms in writing. Pearson Edexcel runs International GCSE in May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026 and results reaching students the following January, as the November 2025 cohort had theirs on 22 January 2026. A family that decides in October to enter a November paper has usually already missed the gate, and the real choice is then May/June.

Abu Dhabi adds a second constraint: not every school re-enters a student who has left, and not every school is a centre for the board your child originally sat. A student who sat Cambridge 0620 Chemistry at a school on the island and has since moved to a British-curriculum school in Al Raha may need to enter as a private candidate through a different centre, which has its own cut-off and its own fees. None of that is difficult, but it is sequential, and the sequence is what families get wrong.

IB Gram delivers all of this as one-to-one tuition over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a resit that is a feature rather than a compromise, because the pool stops being tutors who can reach Al Shamkha by 5pm and becomes tutors who have marked that specification. A student resitting Edexcel Physics 4PH1 wants someone who knows the 4PH1 paper structure, not whoever lives twenty minutes away.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A resit rarely sits alone. Most Abu Dhabi families booking IGCSE resit support are also managing the next stage, whether that is a sixth-form A-Level block, an IB Diploma start, or a second IGCSE sitting alongside it. These are the programmes the work connects to.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson International GCSE

Two boards, two specifications, two sets of paper codes. Cambridge tiers many subjects into Core and Extended with different grade ceilings; Pearson generally runs a single tier with higher-tier content built in. A resit candidate must be entered against the same specification code they intend to be examined on, which is why the code belongs in the plan from the first lesson.

Abu Dhabi has a deep British-curriculum sector under ADEK, so most resit candidates here are entering through a school centre rather than a standalone examination centre. Where a student has left the school, the entry has to be arranged with a centre willing to take external candidates, and that decision drives which series is realistic.

A-LEVELAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

AS and A Level, the usual reason for the resit

Sixth-form entry conditions are the single most common trigger for an IGCSE resit. A school may require a grade 6 in the subject to be taken at A Level and a grade 5 in English and Mathematics for any offer. The resit therefore has a target number, not a vague ambition, and the plan should be built backwards from that number.

Abu Dhabi sixth forms differ on whether they accept a November or March resit grade after the academic year has begun. Ask the admissions office in writing which series they will accept and by what date, then choose the series. Doing it the other way round is how a family ends up with a grade that arrives too late to be useful.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Students moving from IGCSE into the Diploma often resit a science or Mathematics because the Diploma subject they want has an attainment expectation attached. The resit then doubles as preparation: the algebra that limits a 0580 grade is the same algebra that limits Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches in DP1.

Several Abu Dhabi schools run the Diploma alongside a British lower school, so a student can resit an IGCSE in November while already sitting in DP1 classes. That is workable, but it needs the revision block scheduled around internal assessment deadlines rather than dropped on top of them.

MOEPost-16 · university entry

Ministry of Education equivalency track

For the British track, the Ministry requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects.

That five-subject rule is the reason a resit sometimes matters even when a university offer does not depend on it. A student holding four qualifying IGCSEs and one ungraded result has an equivalency problem, not an admissions problem, and the fix is usually one targeted resit. Verify current requirements on the Ministry's own channel before acting.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the IGCSE subjects Abu Dhabi families most often resit, with the syllabus code that decides what the paper looks like and the component where the marks usually went. The code matters: 0580 and 4MA1 are both called Maths and they are not the same examination.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580)

Core and Extended

Extended Paper 4 is where resit candidates lose most ground: multi-part structured questions on functions, transformations and probability trees that reward method marks. Core candidates often lose a whole grade to number work and percentage reverse problems. The fix is method writing, not more topics.

Mathematics A (Pearson 4MA1)

Higher and Foundation

Higher tier Papers 1H and 2H both run 2 hours and both carry calculator access, which changes revision priorities away from arithmetic and towards algebraic fluency, vectors and circle theorems. Students who switched boards mid-course often sit the wrong paper style and lose marks to unfamiliar question phrasing.

Physics (Cambridge 0625)

Core and Extended

Electricity and the thermal physics questions account for a large share of lost marks, and the practical-skills paper punishes students who have never written a method with a named control variable. Resit work concentrates on circuit reasoning, graph interpretation and the difference between describe and explain.

Physics (Pearson 4PH1)

Single tier

Paper 1 and Paper 2 split the content, so a resit candidate who collapsed on one paper may only need half the specification rebuilt. Forces and motion calculations with unit conversion, and the magnetism and electromagnetism section, are the recurring weak points in Abu Dhabi cohorts.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620)

Core and Extended

Organic chemistry and moles calculations between them decide most Extended grades. Students can usually name functional groups and still cannot write a balanced equation under time pressure. Sessions drill stoichiometry to automaticity before touching anything qualitative.

Biology (Cambridge 0610)

Core and Extended

Biology resits are usually a writing problem rather than a knowledge problem. The specification rewards precise terminology and the mark scheme accepts a narrow set of words. Work focuses on transport in plants, homeostasis and the long-answer questions where a vague answer earns one mark instead of four.

English as a Second Language (Cambridge 0510 and 0511)

Core and Extended

Many Abu Dhabi students sit ESL rather than First Language English, and the resit hinges on the summary task and the extended writing register. Marks are lost to length, not accuracy: a 150-word answer where the task wanted 120 is penalised for relevance before it is read for grammar.

First Language English (Cambridge 0500)

Single tier

The directed writing and composition components carry the grade, and resit candidates almost always need structural work rather than vocabulary work. A composition with three strong paragraphs and no planning loses to a plainer piece that answers the question it was set.

Business Studies (Cambridge 0450)

Single tier

The case-study paper requires application to the given business, and resit candidates lose marks by writing textbook answers that never name the company in the stem. Evaluation marks are the cheapest available and the most often skipped entirely.

Economics (Cambridge 0455 and Pearson 4EC1)

Single tier

Diagram accuracy decides the grade. A correctly labelled and correctly shifted diagram earns marks that no amount of prose recovers. Resit work rebuilds the six core diagrams until they can be drawn from memory, then attaches the analysis to them.

Combined and Co-ordinated Science (Cambridge 0653 and 0654)

Core and Extended

Students resitting these often did so because one of the three sciences dragged the grade. The component report shows which, and that is where every hour should go. Rebuilding all three equally is the most common wasted resit plan in this subject.

Computer Science (Cambridge 0478)

Single tier

Paper 2 algorithm and programming questions are where resit candidates lose ground, specifically pseudocode that does not compile in a reader's head. Trace tables and dry-run practice recover marks faster than revisiting the theory in Paper 1.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

A resit has a deadline, so the format question is really a question about intensity. These are the three shapes resit work takes, all delivered online over live video, and most families move between them as the series approaches.

Diagnostic block, two to three sessions

The opening work: read the component marks, rebuild the paper under timed conditions, and produce a written list of the topics and skills that cost the grade. The output is a plan with hours attached, so a family can decide whether the target grade is reachable in the time left before the entry deadline.

  • Component-by-component mark reading before any teaching
  • One full paper sat under exam timing
  • A written topic list ranked by marks available
  • An honest statement of whether the target is reachable

Weekly rebuild, eight to sixteen weeks

One or two fixed sessions a week working through the ranked topic list, each ending with a short set of past-paper questions on that topic to be completed before the next lesson. Progress is measured in marks recovered on repeat questions, not in topics covered.

  • Fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time
  • Marks tracked per topic, not per session
  • Written feedback on every set returned
  • Plan revisited every fourth session

Final six weeks, paper discipline

Content work stops and paper work starts: full papers under timing, marked against the published mark scheme, with the review session spent only on the questions that lost marks. This is where most of the grade movement in a resit actually happens.

  • Full papers under exam conditions weekly
  • Review limited to lost marks only
  • Command-term drilling against the mark scheme
  • Timing strategy per paper, written down

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What an IGCSE resit actually changes on the certificate

A resit produces a new result for that subject in that series. The original result does not disappear from a student's records, but a university or sixth form looking at an application reads the grade the student presents, and in practice the higher grade is the one that gets used. For the Ministry of Education equivalency count, what matters is holding five accredited subjects at no lower than grade E or grade 3, and a resit that lifts a failing subject into that range solves the problem directly.

What a resit does not do is change the specification. If your child sat Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 Extended, the resit is against 0620 Extended with the same components and the same weightings. There is no reduced paper for resit candidates and no partial entry on the Extended tier. That is why the component report is the whole basis of the plan: the examination is identical, so the only variable is what the student does differently in it.

Tier changes are the one structural decision available. A Cambridge candidate on Extended can be entered for Core instead, which caps the grade at C or grade 5 depending on the subject's grading scale but makes that ceiling far more achievable. Whether that trade is right depends entirely on what the grade is for. A student who needs a 5 in Mathematics for a sixth-form offer may be better served by a secure Core entry than by a second Extended attempt that lands in the same place as the first.

Families sometimes ask whether a resit looks bad. In the Abu Dhabi schools we deal with, it does not. Admissions teams read a resit as a student who identified a problem and fixed it, which is a more useful signal than a first-attempt grade that nobody can explain. What does read badly is a resit entered without a plan and sat with the same preparation as the first attempt.

02

Choosing the series: the calendar counted backwards

Every resit decision is a calendar decision first. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and each centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones. Cambridge is explicit that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable. That is a real risk for a family arranging entry through an unfamiliar centre.

The table below uses Pearson's published November 2026 International GCSE series as the worked example, because November is the window most resit candidates are actually choosing and it shows how far ahead of the paper the real deadlines sit. The papers ran from late October to 19 November 2026; entries for them closed months earlier in the year, and the centre's own internal cut-off closed earlier again. Results reach students the following January, which is the date a conditional sixth-form offer has to be checked against before the entry is filed. A family that starts planning in October for a November paper is planning for a series it can no longer enter, and should be counting backwards towards May/June instead.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November each year. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so the live official timetable on the Pearson qualifications site is the only version worth planning against; restating a date that can still be revised is how families end up revising for the wrong week.

Working backwards from the paper is the whole method. Count the weeks from today to the examination window, subtract the two or three weeks before the paper when nothing new can be learned, and what remains is the teaching time available. If that number is under eight weeks for a two-grade jump in a science, the honest answer is to target the following series and use the time properly rather than enter early and repeat the result.

Entering as a private candidate in Abu Dhabi

  • Ask the centre for the syllabus code, series and internal cut-off in writing
  • Confirm every component can be delivered, including practical and speaking papers
  • Budget for centre fees on top of board entry fees
  • Take the examination date from the centre's own zone timetable

If your child is still enrolled at the school where they sat the first attempt, entry is usually straightforward: the examinations officer adds them to the series and the fee appears on the school account. The complication arrives when the student has left, has changed curriculum, or when the school declines to re-enter them. In those cases the student becomes a private candidate and must find a centre willing to accept external entries for that specification.

Abu Dhabi has a deep private-school sector licensed and inspected by ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. Not every licensed school is an examination centre for every board, and a centre that runs Cambridge is not automatically a centre that will take a Pearson entry. The practical question to ask is narrow: do you accept external candidates for this exact syllabus code in this series, and what is your internal cut-off date?

Private-candidate entry carries its own fees, set by the centre rather than by the board, and those fees are separate from the board's entry fee. Centres also differ on whether they will host components that need a laboratory or a speaking examination, which rules some specifications out entirely for external candidates. Check the component list against what the centre can actually deliver before paying anything, because an entry that cannot sit Paper 5 is not an entry at all.

One scheduling point specific to this emirate: confirm the zone timetable the centre uses, not the one a friend at another school quoted. Cambridge allocates centres to administrative zones and publishes a timetable per zone, and two Abu Dhabi centres do not have to be in the same zone. The date your child sits the paper is the date their centre's timetable says, and that is the date the revision plan has to end on.

04

Where the marks went the first time, subject by subject

The component report is the most under-used document in the IGCSE system. It tells you which paper lost the grade, and that single fact reorganises the entire revision plan. A student who scored adequately on a short-answer paper and badly on an extended-response paper has a writing and timing problem. A student who lost marks evenly across both papers has a content problem. The two need almost nothing in common, and treating them the same is why so many resits land on the same grade.

Where the school can request the original script, that is worth doing. Cambridge and Pearson both operate access-to-script services through the centre, and reading the real answers removes all guessing. We do not reproduce or supply board papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents; the centre requests the script and we work from what your child wrote, against the published assessment objectives that the board makes available on its own site.

The table below sets out the patterns we see most often in Abu Dhabi resit candidates, by syllabus code. These are the recurring failure modes, not a prediction about your child, and the first diagnostic session exists precisely to establish which of them applies. What makes them useful is that each has a known fix with a known number of hours attached, which is what lets us tell a family honestly whether the target grade fits in the time remaining.

One pattern cuts across every subject: command-term misreading. A student who answers describe when the question said explain loses marks they could already have earned. The mark schemes are consistent about this, and it is the cheapest grade movement available in a resit, which is why it comes first in almost every plan we write rather than last.

What resit support costs in Abu Dhabi, and what moves the number

Resit tuition sits at the upper end of the market, because the work is specification-specific and time-bounded. Market rates in the UAE run roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online and university-student tutors, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to 500 for an in-home visit including travel, and AED 200 to 450 or more for an IB, IGCSE or A-Level specialist. Premium named or examiner-led tuition has been advertised at AED 650. Those are market figures published by providers and rate trackers, not IB Gram prices.

Three things move the number in this emirate specifically. The first is format: in-home rates carry travel, and in Abu Dhabi travel between the mainland communities and the island is a genuine cost, which is why in-home bands sit AED 50 to 150 above online for the same tutor quality. The second is proximity to the series, because availability tightens in the eight weeks before a paper and the specialists are booked first. The third is subject scarcity: a resit in Mathematics has a wide tutor pool, a resit in Cambridge Art and Design or a less-entered language has a very narrow one.

Package structures seen in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. A resit plan is usually denser than a weekly habit, so budget against total hours rather than against a monthly figure.

For context, Abu Dhabi school fees are set and approved through the emirate's regulatory process, and in Dubai the KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's second economic incentives package. Tutoring is the variable line in a family's education budget, which is exactly why a resit plan should state a total hour count up front rather than running open-ended. IB Gram does not publish a price list on these pages; the first lesson is free with no card required, and pricing is confirmed in the consultation.

Coursework, practicals and what carries over

This is the question families ask last and should ask first. Whether a coursework or practical mark carries into a resit depends on the specification, and the answer changes what the resit actually involves. Some components can be carried forward from a previous series; others must be sat again. The centre's examinations officer can confirm this against the current syllabus for the exact code, and that confirmation should happen before the entry is made rather than after.

Where a practical or coursework component must be re-taken, a private candidate has a real problem, because not every centre can host it. A Cambridge science specification with a practical-skills paper needs a centre with the apparatus and the willingness to run it for an external candidate. A language with a speaking component needs an examiner. If the centre cannot deliver the component, the entry has to move to a centre that can, and that decision changes both the timetable and the fee.

Where a mark does carry forward, the resit narrows to the written papers and the plan gets correspondingly tighter. That is the best case for a resit candidate: a known weak paper, a fixed number of weeks, and no coursework to rebuild. It is also where the biggest grade movements happen, because every available hour goes into the component that actually lost the marks.

On the coursework itself, the boundary is absolute and worth stating plainly. A tutor teaches, explains, models technique, and gives feedback on work the student has written. A tutor does not write, complete or redraft assessed coursework, and no IB Gram tutor will do so. Providers in this market sell completed assessed work; that is a malpractice trigger for the student and the reason we say what the boundary is rather than leaving it implied.

07

Resits, equivalency and what the Ministry actually counts

A resit sometimes matters for reasons that have nothing to do with a sixth-form offer. For the British track, the UAE Ministry of Education requires a student to pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects.

That last point catches families out. A student holding five IGCSEs where two are Arabic and Islamic Education is holding three for equivalency purposes, not five, and needs two more qualifying subjects. One competitor page ranking for these queries states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the sourced requirement is five accredited subjects excluding Arabic and Islamic education. Getting the count right is the difference between one targeted resit and a year of unnecessary work.

For the American track the Ministry sets test requirements instead: English proficiency through a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics through at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. No IB points threshold appears in the sourced material we hold, so we publish none; verify any IB figure against the Ministry's own channel.

IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency or attestation. We describe the requirement, point to the authority, and make sure a resit plan is aimed at a subject that actually counts. Tutoring is not required for equivalency, university admission or school progression, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling urgency rather than teaching.

08

Is your tutor legally permitted to teach in the UAE?

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, not left open. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

MoHRE's own service page for this is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone, including us.

Two further points matter for a resit. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the permit-holder's own school. So a plan built around your child's own class teacher tutoring them privately is not a plan we will arrange, and you should be cautious of anyone offering it. Verify current wording against the live ADEK policy document.

A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal again: it needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. IB Gram holds no regulator permit or accreditation and does not claim one. We are an online tutor-matching platform with no UAE office, and we say so because several pages in this search result imply otherwise.

The twelve-week resit plan, and what happens if the subject is scarce

  • Weeks 1-2: component marks read, one timed paper, ranked topic list
  • Weeks 3-8: rebuild, one or two sessions weekly, question set every time
  • Weeks 9-12: full papers under timing, review limited to lost marks
  • Plan reviewed every fourth session against marks recovered
  • Mainstream subject match in two to four working days; scarce subjects longer

Twelve weeks is the shape most resit plans take, because it is long enough to rebuild two or three topics properly and short enough that a family can hold the schedule. Weeks one and two are diagnosis: component marks read, one full paper sat under timing, a ranked topic list produced with marks attached. Weeks three to eight are the rebuild, one or two sessions a week, each ending with a question set returned before the next lesson. Weeks nine to twelve are paper discipline, where content stops and timing starts.

The measure of progress is marks recovered on repeat questions, not topics ticked off. A student who could not earn the last four marks on a structured question in week two and earns three of them in week seven has moved; a student who has covered nine topics and still loses the same marks has not. That distinction is why the plan gets reviewed every fourth session and rewritten when the evidence says to, rather than run to completion because it was written down.

Availability is where most platforms stop being honest, so here is the position. For a mainstream resit subject in Abu Dhabi, a specialist match usually takes two to four working days. For a narrow specification, a less-entered language, or a creative subject with a coursework component, it can take longer, and in the eight weeks before a series it takes longer still because the specialists fill up first. If we cannot cover a subject at the standard a resit needs, we say so rather than putting a general tutor in front of a specification they have never marked.

Where no UAE-based specialist is free, the match may be a tutor based elsewhere teaching into Gulf Standard Time, which for an online lesson changes nothing about the lesson and everything about the pool available. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; home visits are a service we run only in India, and the comparison table on this page exists so you can judge that trade on its merits rather than on our description of it.

Where we tutor

Where resit candidates in Abu Dhabi are, and what that changes

Abu Dhabi enrolment is spread across the island, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, and the newer mainland communities, and the practical effect on a resit is scheduling rather than geography. An online lesson removes the commute; what remains is the school day and the exam centre.

Khalifa City

Dense British and American curriculum enrolment with long school-bus runs. A 4.30pm session is usually too early here; resit blocks tend to land at 6pm or 7pm on weekdays and mid-morning on Saturdays.

Al Reem Island

Apartment living with short commutes to island schools, so earlier weekday sessions work. Families here often need the resit scheduled around sibling activities in the same flat, which argues for a fixed weekly slot.

Saadiyat Island

Low-density villa community feeding a small number of large schools, which means several resit candidates in a year group sit the same paper. Tutors here are often working on the same component with different students in the same week.

Al Raha Beach and Al Bandar

Mixed apartment and townhouse enrolment with a strong British-curriculum pull. Entry as an external candidate is common here because families move between schools in the corridor more often than on the island.

Yas Island

Newer schools with newer examination centres, so centre capacity for external candidates can be limited in a given series. Confirm the centre before fixing the revision timetable.

Al Mushrif and Al Bateen

Established island communities with older school stock and a long IGCSE history. Resit candidates here are often returning to the same centre they sat the first time, which simplifies entry considerably.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland family housing where the drive to an island centre is a real factor on exam mornings. Worth checking whether a nearer centre offers the same specification before entering.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Fast-growing communities with newer schools and families often new to the IGCSE system. Explaining the entry sequence usually takes as much of the first consultation as the subject diagnosis does.

School ecosystem

Island and Corniche schools

The older island schools hold the longest IGCSE records in the emirate and most are established examination centres. Students we support here are usually resitting through their own school rather than externally, which keeps the entry simple and the forecast grade process internal.

Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor

The corridor carries a large share of the emirate's British-curriculum enrolment and the highest volume of resit enquiries we see from Abu Dhabi. Families here move between schools more than elsewhere, which is why external-candidate entry comes up so often in this cluster.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the statement of results

The first useful document is the component breakdown, not a description of how the year went. Send the statement of results, the subject and the exact syllabus code, and the target grade with the reason behind it. That is enough to tell you whether the target fits the time left.

  2. 02

    Free diagnostic lesson

One lesson at no cost and with no card required. The tutor works through the weakest component with your child and finishes with a written statement of what cost the grade. If the fit is wrong, you have lost an hour and gained a diagnosis.

  3. 03

Confirm the series and the centre

Before any teaching plan is fixed, settle which series you are entering and which centre is taking the entry, with the centre's own cut-off date and zone timetable in writing. The teaching plan is built backwards from that examination date, not forwards from today.

  4. 04

    Agree the hour count

The plan states a total number of hours against the ranked topic list, so you are agreeing to a block of work rather than an open-ended arrangement. If the honest hour count does not fit the series, we say so and recommend the next one.

  5. 05

    Weekly work with marks tracked

Fixed slot, question set after every lesson, written feedback returned before the next. Marks recovered per topic are recorded, and the plan is reviewed every fourth session against that record rather than against the calendar.

  6. 06

    Hand over to paper discipline

In the final six weeks the work changes shape: full papers under timing, marked against the published mark scheme, review sessions spent only on lost marks. Timing strategy per paper is written down and practised rather than discussed.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The plan starts from the real paper

A resit plan built on a tutor's own diagnostic test ignores the most informative document you have. We start from the component marks and, where the centre can request it, the original script, because that removes guessing about which paper lost the grade.

Syllabus codes, not subject names

0580 and 4MA1 are both called Maths and they examine differently. Every plan names the code, the tier and the components, so the practice your child does matches the paper they will sit rather than a generic version of the subject.

The hour count is stated up front

Resit work is time-bounded, so the plan carries a total hour estimate against a ranked topic list. If the target grade does not fit the weeks remaining before the entry deadline, we tell you that before you pay for anything.

A wider specialist pool than any commute allows

Because lessons are online and one-to-one, the match is made from tutors who have taught that specification to examination rather than from tutors who can reach your community by 5pm. For a scarce specification that difference decides whether a match exists at all.

The coursework boundary is explicit

A tutor teaches, models and gives feedback on your child's own work. No IB Gram tutor writes or completes assessed coursework. Providers in this search result sell finished assessments; we state the boundary because the student carries the malpractice risk, not the seller.

Availability stated honestly

Mainstream resit subjects match in two to four working days. Narrow specifications take longer, and inside eight weeks of a series they take longer again. When we cannot cover a subject properly we say so instead of filling the slot with a generalist.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Can my child resit just one IGCSE subject, or does the whole set have to be taken again?+

One subject is fine. IGCSE results are reported per subject, so a candidate can be entered for a single syllabus in a later series and leave everything else as it stands. That is the most common resit in Abu Dhabi: one science or Mathematics standing between a student and a sixth-form offer. The entry is made against the specific syllabus code, and the only thing that has to be re-sat is whatever that specification requires, which may include a practical or coursework component. Confirm the component list with the centre before entering so the revision plan matches the papers actually being taken.

Which exam series should an Abu Dhabi resit candidate enter, November or June?+

Work backwards from the date the grade is needed. Cambridge International runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. If a sixth form needs the grade before the academic year starts, June is usually the answer. If the student has already started Year 12 and the offer is conditional, November can work provided the school has confirmed in writing that it will accept a January results date. Check your centre's zone timetable, because Cambridge allocates centres to six administrative zones with different versions.

Does a resit grade replace the original grade on the certificate?+

A resit produces a new certificated result for that subject in that series. The earlier result still exists in the student's record, but in practice sixth forms and universities read the grade the applicant presents, and the higher one is the one that gets used. For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, what counts is holding five accredited subjects at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, so a resit that lifts a subject into range solves the requirement directly. Verify current rules on the Ministry's own channel.

Can my child sit an IGCSE resit as a private candidate if their school will not re-enter them?+

Yes, but it takes arranging. The student becomes a private candidate and needs a centre willing to accept external entries for that exact syllabus code in that series. Not every school licensed by ADEK is a centre for every board, and a Cambridge centre will not necessarily take a Pearson entry. Ask three questions in writing: do you accept external candidates for this code, what is your internal cut-off date, and can you deliver every component including practicals or speaking papers. Centre fees sit on top of the board entry fee and are set by the centre.

How many weeks of tutoring does a one-grade IGCSE improvement usually take?+

Nobody can promise a grade, and anyone who does should be treated with real scepticism. What can be said is the shape of the work. A one-grade move in a science or Mathematics typically needs eight to twelve weeks of one or two weekly sessions, with the last four to six spent entirely on timed papers. Two grades usually needs a full term or the next series. The variable is not effort but how many of the lost marks came from content versus timing and command-term misreading, and the first diagnostic session exists to establish exactly that.

What does specialist IGCSE resit tuition cost per hour in Abu Dhabi in 2026?+

Market rates, not IB Gram prices: roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online or university-student tutors, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 200 to 450 or more for an IGCSE or A-Level specialist, and AED 180 to 500 for an in-home visit once travel is priced in. Premium named tuition has been advertised at AED 650. Resit work sits in the specialist band because it is specification-specific and time-bounded. Ask any provider for the total hour count rather than the hourly rate, because that is the number that matters.

Does a coursework or practical mark carry over into a resit?+

It depends on the specification, and this is the question to settle before entering rather than after. Some components can be carried forward from a previous series; others must be sat again. The centre's examinations officer can confirm the position against the current syllabus for the exact code. Where a practical or speaking component must be re-taken, a private candidate needs a centre with the apparatus or the examiner to deliver it, which rules some specifications out entirely at some centres. If a mark does carry forward, the resit narrows to the written papers and the plan gets considerably tighter.

Will a resit grade still count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

For the British track the Ministry requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. A certificated resit result is a certificated result, so a subject lifted into range counts. One ranking competitor states six subjects are required; the sourced figure is five. Equivalency is handled by the authority, not by IB Gram, and tutoring is not a requirement for it.

My child needs a grade 5 in Mathematics 0580 for sixth form. Is one term realistic?+

Often yes, and the component report tells you whether. If the first attempt was Extended and the marks were lost mainly on Paper 4 structured questions, a term of method-writing discipline plus functions and probability work is a realistic route to a 5. If marks were lost evenly across both papers, the content base needs rebuilding and a term is tight. A Core entry is the other option: it caps the grade but makes the cap far more achievable, and if the offer asks for a 5 rather than a 7 that trade is worth putting on the table.

Is there any Cambridge IGCSE sitting between November and June that an Abu Dhabi resit could use?+

No. Cambridge offers UAE centres a June series and a November series, and nothing in between: the February and March series some families read about online is offered to India only, and the Checkpoint tests that run in March, May and October are Primary and Lower Secondary assessments, not IGCSE. So the earliest paper available after a set of August results is the November sitting, with entries closing over the summer on the centre's deadline, and the next one after that is June, with entries closing in the spring term. That gap is what makes the resit decision a calendar decision: five months to November, or roughly twelve to the following June, with the extra time usually worth more than it looks when a grade boundary is two or three marks away. Confirm with your centre which series it enters candidates for and which zone timetable applies to it.

Should a resit candidate move from Extended down to Core, or stay on Extended?+

It depends entirely on what the grade is for. A Cambridge candidate entered for Core faces a lower grade ceiling but a far more achievable one, because the papers are shorter in content reach and the questions are more direct. If a sixth-form offer needs a 5 and the first Extended attempt landed at 3, a secure Core entry can be the better bet. If the subject is being continued to A Level and the department expects a 6 or 7, Core closes that door and a second Extended attempt with proper diagnosis is the right call.

How do we see the actual paper our child sat to know where the marks went?+

Through the centre. Cambridge and Pearson both operate access-to-script services requested by the examinations officer, not by the family directly, and the statement of results already gives you marks by component without any request at all. Start with the component breakdown, because it tells you which paper lost the grade and that one fact reorganises the whole plan. We do not reproduce or supply board papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents; we work from what your child wrote and cite the board's own published material by link.

Can my child resit with Pearson Edexcel if the first attempt was Cambridge?+

Switching boards is possible, since the two are separate qualifications, but it usually makes the resit harder rather than easier. Pearson International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1 and Cambridge 0580 cover similar mathematics with different paper structures, question phrasing and tiering, so a student switching boards is learning a new examination on top of fixing the original problem. The switch is worth it only where a centre will take one board and not the other, or where a component the student struggles with does not exist on the other specification. Otherwise, resit the specification they know.

Do resit lessons happen at our villa in Khalifa City, or online?+

Online, one-to-one, over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a resit that matters in your favour, because the specialist pool stops being tutors who can reach Khalifa City through the evening traffic and becomes tutors who have taught and marked the exact specification your child is re-sitting. Screen sharing also means the marked paper and the question set sit in front of both of them in the same window.

What happens if no specialist is free for the subject we need to resit?+

We tell you. For mainstream resit subjects in Abu Dhabi a specialist match usually takes two to four working days; for a narrow specification, a less-entered language or a creative subject with coursework it can take longer, and inside eight weeks of a series it takes longer again because specialists fill first. Where no UAE-based tutor covers the specification, the match may be a tutor elsewhere teaching into Gulf Standard Time, which for an online lesson changes the pool and not the lesson. We would rather decline a subject than put a generalist in front of a specification they have never marked.

Start with the component marks, not the calendar

A resit is a solvable problem with a deadline attached, and the two things that decide it are which component lost the grade and how many weeks remain before the entry closes. Send the statement of results, the syllabus code and the target grade, and the first lesson is free with no card required. The tutor will finish it with a written statement of what cost the grade and an honest hour count for fixing it. If the target does not fit the series, we will say so and point you at the next one rather than sell you a plan that lands on the same grade twice. Lessons are one-to-one, online, and timed to your week in Abu Dhabi.
