IGCSE A Star Coaching in Abu Dhabi

IGCSE A star coaching in Abu Dhabi has a question to settle before any teaching happens: whether an A* even exists on your child's certificate. Cambridge International reports most subjects on an A* to G scale while Pearson Edexcel International GCSE reports 9 to 1, so a family in Abu Dhabi can be chasing a grade their board does not issue. This page sorts that out, then names where the last marks in each paper are lost. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

  • Grade scales by board, with the centre named as the place to confirm
  • Top-band losses identified by component rather than by topic
  • Alternative-to-practical and coursework routes set out explicitly
  • One-to-one lessons over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

First establish which grade your child can actually be awarded

An A* is a specific grade issued on a specific scale, and in Abu Dhabi a family can spend a term chasing one their board does not award. Cambridge International reports most international GCSE subjects on an A* to G scale. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE reports on a 9 to 1 scale, where the top grade is a 9 and there is no A* at all. Schools in this emirate use both boards, sometimes different boards for different subjects in the same year group, so the first action is to ask the centre which scale each of your child's subjects is reported on.

This is not pedantry. It changes the target, the way progress is read, and the way a sixth form or university reads the result. A candidate aiming for a 9 on a 9 to 1 scale is aiming at a band that was deliberately set above the old top grade, and comparisons between the two scales are made by the boards and the receiving institutions rather than by a tutor. Where an equivalence matters to your family, read it on the board's own page or ask the sixth form what it treats as equivalent, in writing.

Once that is settled, the second precondition is the tier. In tiered subjects, the top grades are only available at Extended tier, and tier is fixed in the entry made by the centre before its internal cut-off. A candidate entered at Core has a capped ceiling no amount of teaching can lift in that series. So a top-grade campaign begins with two administrative facts, both obtainable in a single email: the grade scale per subject, and the tier on the entry.

After that the work becomes genuinely narrow, which is the good news. Candidates in reach of the top band know the content. What separates them from it is a small set of repeated behaviours visible in any marked script: method lines left unwritten, command words answered loosely, conclusions stated without the evidence that earns the mark, answers rounded before the final step, and the last long question met with four minutes left. Those are nameable and each one has a fixed cost in sessions.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address; home visits are a service we offer only in India. At the top of the range the practical consequence is who you can choose: a candidate needs someone who marks Extended-tier Chemistry or Additional Mathematics to the published mark scheme, and in Abu Dhabi that person is unlikely to live within a short drive of any particular address. The in-home market prices the journey at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, and the journey contributes nothing to a mark scheme.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A top grade is built across two or three years and decided in the last two terms. These are the stages Abu Dhabi families pass through, and what each contributes to the final letter or number.

LSECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Lower Secondary and Checkpoint

Checkpoint tests in March, May and October are diagnostic and carry no certificate, which makes them the cheapest reliable signal a family will get about whether a top grade is realistic. The habits that later separate the top band, particularly writing a reasoned explanation rather than an answer, are established here or not at all.

Abu Dhabi schools on the Cambridge pathway usually stream for IGCSE tier using Year 9 internal data. A family with a top-grade ambition should ask how that decision is made and on what evidence, because an Extended-tier place is the precondition for everything on this page.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Reported on an A* to G scale in most subjects, with Core and Extended tiers in subjects such as Mathematics 0580, Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610. Grade thresholds are set per series after the papers are sat, so the raw mark needed for an A* is not a fixed number and varies between series and between subjects.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for the zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. For a top-grade candidate that administrative detail is worth five minutes of a parent's time.

IG-EDXAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Reported on a 9 to 1 scale with codes such as 4MA1, 4PH1 and 4CH1. There is no A* on this scale; the top grade is a 9. Some qualifications are modular, which changes how a top-grade campaign is sequenced because a candidate may bank a strong paper rather than carrying everything into one series.

The November 2026 Pearson final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026 and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so any top-grade plan should be built against the live official timetable rather than a restated date.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

AS and A Level

The reason the top grade matters to most families. Abu Dhabi sixth forms publish their own entry requirements and several specify both grade and tier for AS sciences and mathematics. A top IGCSE grade also predicts comfort rather than merely entry: the algebraic fluency that earns an A* is what the first term of AS Mathematics assumes.

Where a sixth-form place depends on a grade, ask the receiving school in writing which grades on which scale it requires, since it may be reading both an A* to G and a 9 to 1 profile in the same admissions round and will have its own view of equivalence.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Where the last marks sit, subject by subject. At the top of the range these are component-level and behavioural rather than topical, which is why they are findable in a single marked script.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580 / Pearson 4MA1)

Extended tier

The final marks live in the unstructured questions at the end of the paper, in upper and lower bounds, and in algebraic fractions. Beneath those sits a steady band of method marks lost to unwritten steps, which strong candidates give away because they can do the step in their head.

Additional Mathematics / Further Pure

Extended only

Calculus notation, binomial expansion and trigonometric identities carry the marks, and the paper assumes an algebraic speed that Mathematics alone does not build. Candidates lose top marks on presentation conventions rather than on understanding, which is a fast repair.

Physics (Cambridge 0625 / Pearson 4PH1)

Extended tier

Electricity and electromagnetism hold the largest share of lost marks, with practical-skills questions close behind. At the top of the range the losses are in naming a relationship as proportional rather than describing it as increasing, and in justifying which plotted point is anomalous.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620 / Pearson 4CH1)

Extended tier

Moles and stoichiometry under time pressure, exact organic reaction conditions, and the qualitative-analysis tables. A top-band candidate rarely misunderstands these; they lose marks to imprecision, such as stating a reagent without its conditions.

Biology (Cambridge 0610 / Pearson 4BI1)

Extended tier

The most command-word sensitive subject at this level. Answers that describe where an explanation was required score the knowledge mark only, and answer length mismatched to mark allocation costs time needed for the data questions later in the paper.

First Language English

Extended

Marked on reading as much as on writing. The directed-response task rewards evidence used in service of an argument rather than retelling, and the composition is assessed on controlled structure. Top-band candidates lose marks to length without shape.

English as a Second Language

Extended

The summary task divides the top band: compression in the candidate's own words rather than selective copying. The directed-writing task is marked on audience and register, both specified in the prompt and both routinely ignored by otherwise strong writers.

Economics and Business Studies

Extended tier

Extended-answer questions carry the top marks and they require a judgement with support, not a balanced summary. Candidates who analyse thoroughly and stop short of evaluating sit a band below where their knowledge places them.

Computer Science

Extended tier

Top marks go on written conventions rather than coding ability: trace tables completed exactly, pseudocode in the expected style, and precise vocabulary for data representation and the fetch-execute cycle. Capable programmers lose a band here routinely.

Arabic and UAE social studies alongside IGCSE

School-set

Taught alongside the licensed international curriculum in UAE private schools, and running through the whole examination year. For a top-grade campaign these are fixed timetable hours, and any plan that treats them as optional has overstated the week it is working with.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to work towards a top grade, separated by which of the five top-band habits a marked script shows.

Precision block, one or two subjects

Short frequent sessions, each targeting one named habit from the script rather than a topic, with a marked timed section every second session to test whether the correction held. This is the standard shape for a candidate already in the band below the top and losing marks consistently to the same thing.

  • Diagnostic marked paper before the plan is written
  • One named habit per session, not a syllabus sweep
  • Timed section marked and returned with a component breakdown
  • Content teaching only where a marked paper proves a real gap

Unfamiliar-component rehearsal

Top-band candidates lose most on the components they meet least: alternative-to-practical papers, data-analysis questions, and the directed-writing tasks with a specified register. A short block of rehearsal on those specific papers usually produces more marks per hour than general revision in the same subject.

  • The exact option codes on your centre's entry confirmed first
  • Practice limited to the components actually being sat
  • Mark schemes applied strictly so the standard is visible
  • Rehearsed under the real duration, not untimed

Single diagnostic session

One session on a recent marked paper, producing a written list of where the last marks went and whether the tier and board assumptions behind the family's target are correct. Often the only purchase needed, and the one that prevents the expensive wrong plan.

  • Confirms the grade scale and tier before anything is taught
  • Written marks-lost list the family keeps regardless
  • A clear answer on whether the top band is realistic this series
  • No programme attached and nothing implied

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

A* or 9: which scale is your child actually on?

Abu Dhabi schools use both major international GCSE boards, and some use different boards for different subjects within the same year group. Cambridge International reports most international GCSE subjects on an A* to G scale. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE reports on a 9 to 1 scale, where 9 is the top grade and no A* is issued. A family can therefore set a target that their child's certificate will never show, and in practice this happens most often where a household moved from a Cambridge school to a Pearson one or where the school mixes boards.

The consequence is practical rather than cosmetic. Progress gets read against the wrong landmark, and a sixth-form conversation gets conducted in the wrong currency. Where equivalence between the two scales matters, it is set by the boards and interpreted by receiving institutions, not by a tutoring service, so the only reliable route is to read the board's own published explanation and to ask the sixth form in writing what it requires on which scale.

The second half of this question is the tier, and it is the one that actually caps a grade. In tiered subjects the top grades are available only at Extended tier, and the tier is fixed in the entry submitted by the centre. A candidate entered at Core cannot be awarded a top grade in that series however well they perform, and no teaching changes that after the entry closes. Confirm the tier on the entry, in writing, before buying a top-grade campaign.

Both facts come from the same email to the school's exams officer: which board and option code is each subject entered under, on which grade scale is it reported, and at which tier. Five minutes of administration prevents the single most common wasted term in this part of the market.

Why no honest page can tell you the marks an A* needs

  • Grade thresholds are set after each series and published by the board
  • They vary by subject, by component and by series, so no standing percentage exists
  • Read your child's subject thresholds for recent series on the board's own site
  • Ask the school which thresholds it applied to the mock, and for the raw mark

Parents reasonably ask what percentage an A* requires, and the honest answer is that there is no standing figure. Grade thresholds are set per series by the board after the papers have been sat and the cohort's performance is known, and they are then published. They differ between subjects, between components and between series. A page that quotes a single percentage for a top grade is either reporting one historical series without saying so or inventing a number.

What a family can do, and should, is read the board's published thresholds for recent series in their child's specific subject. That gives a realistic band rather than a promise, and it converts a vague target into an arithmetic one: if the threshold has sat in a particular range across several series, a candidate currently scoring below it knows roughly how many marks are in play. That is a far more useful piece of information than a tutor's estimate.

It also reframes a mock result usefully. A school marking a mock has to borrow thresholds from somewhere, usually a previous series, and the choice shifts a candidate's apparent grade. Asking which thresholds were applied, and what the raw mark was, often turns an alarming mock grade into a gap of a few marks. Several marks is a narrow, cheap problem. A whole band may not be.

One thing to avoid entirely: reproducing or sharing board threshold documents, past papers or mark schemes. Those belong to Cambridge and Pearson, and the correct behaviour is to cite and link them. A tutor who offers a folder of mark schemes is offering something they are not entitled to distribute, which is a reasonable signal about the rest of their practice.

03

Where the last marks are lost, component by component

At the top of the range, lost marks are not spread across the syllabus. They cluster in a small number of components and in a small number of behaviours within them. In Mathematics the clustering is in the final unstructured questions and in bounds, with a steady tax of method marks on every page. In Physics it is electricity, electromagnetism and the practical-skills questions. In Chemistry it is moles under time pressure and the precision of stated conditions.

In the written subjects the clustering is different but equally predictable. The English summary task rewards compression and punishes selective copying. The directed-writing task rewards register and audience, which the prompt specifies and which strong writers override with their own voice. Economics and Business extended answers reward a supported judgement and give nothing extra for a thorough balanced summary. Biology punishes a described answer where an explanation was required, in every paper, every series.

The reason to tabulate this is efficiency. A candidate three or four marks below a top threshold does not need a syllabus review; they need the two components where those marks are going, rehearsed under the real duration and marked strictly. A single diagnostic paper identifies which ones, and the plan after that is short. Buying a term of general revision for a four-mark gap is the most common overspend in this part of the market.

There is a scheduling implication too. The components where top-band marks hide are frequently the ones a school practises least, because they are awkward to run: alternative-to-practical papers, long data-analysis questions, and timed composition. Those are exactly where an outside session adds something the classroom has not already provided.

04

The five habits that separate the top band

The first is writing the method. Both boards award method marks, and a correct final answer with nothing shown collects fewer of them than a wrong answer reached visibly. Top-band candidates give these away constantly because the step is obvious to them. Installing the habit takes two or three sessions and maintaining it takes timed practice, because it is the first thing to disappear when a paper is tight.

The second is reading the command word and answering it exactly. Describe, explain, suggest, evaluate, justify, compare: each has a mark-scheme meaning and an answer written to the wrong one collects the knowledge mark and stops. This is the single largest source of lost marks in Biology and a significant one everywhere else, and it is a reading habit rather than a knowledge gap.

The third is finishing. Marks lost to unattempted questions at the end of a paper are invisible in a grade and obvious in a script: look for where the writing thins out. The cause is usually over-investment earlier, a strong candidate writing a six-mark answer to a three-mark question. The repair is a question-order strategy and timed full papers, not more content.

The fourth is precision in the final step: not rounding before the end, carrying units, labelling axes, stating conditions. The fifth is checking: a ten-second sanity check that a probability does not exceed one or a length is not negative. Neither is intellectually demanding and both are worth marks in every series, and candidates at the top of the range skip them because they trust themselves, which is exactly when they cost most.

05

Alternative-to-practical, coursework and the option codes behind them

A top-grade campaign has to be built against the components the candidate is actually entered for, and in the sciences that is not automatic. In several subjects the practical assessment is examined through a written alternative-to-practical paper rather than a laboratory session, and which applies depends on the option code the centre has entered. A candidate rehearsing for one and sitting the other has lost marks before the series begins.

That paper is also where top-band marks hide, because it is the component schools practise least. It asks candidates to identify variables, criticise an experimental method, read a scale precisely, draw a graph to the examiner's conventions and identify anomalies with reasons. Each of those is a learnable technique and none of them is taught by revising the theory. Three or four past alternative-to-practical papers marked strictly is among the highest-yield blocks available in Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Where a coursework component exists, the position differs between school candidates and private candidates, and a private candidate generally cannot submit coursework externally, so the centre enters an option code without it and the written papers carry more of the grade. That changes what a top-grade plan should rehearse. Establishing the exact option codes on the entry is therefore a prerequisite, and the exams officer can supply them.

One further Pearson-specific point: where a qualification is modular, a candidate may be able to bank a strong paper and re-sit a weaker one rather than carrying everything into a single series. For a top-grade candidate that is a strategic question worth raising with the centre early, because the rules are set by the board and the sequencing decision belongs to the entry.

06

The calendar for a top-grade campaign, counted backwards

A top-band plan fails most often on timing rather than on content, because the useful work has to happen before the components stop being teachable. Counting backwards from the series makes the sequence obvious. The last fortnight before papers is for timed rehearsal and nothing new. The month before that is for the components with the lowest practice frequency, which means the alternative-to-practical papers and the long data questions. The term before that is where habits are installed, because habits need maintaining.

Before any of it sits the administration. The centre's internal entry cut-off fixes the tier and the option codes, and once it passes the ceiling is set. For a top-grade candidate the cut-off is therefore the most important date in the year, and it falls months before the papers. Cambridge runs a June series and a November series for UAE candidates and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November, and each board's deadline precedes its series by months.

There is one administrative trap specific to Cambridge. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, each with its own timetable version, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version for the zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. A revision calendar built from the wrong zone's timetable can put a candidate in the wrong room on the wrong day.

Finally, results. For Pearson, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Those dates matter for a top-grade candidate whose sixth-form place or scholarship depends on the grade, because the timing determines whether a condition clears in August or in January.

How sessions run, and the limits worth stating

Lessons are one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard, screen sharing and the candidate's own marked script open during the session. Gulf Standard Time lessons are scheduled around the Abu Dhabi school week: earlier where the school run is short, 5pm or later for the Khalifa City and Al Shamkha catchments, weekend blocks for timed papers, and post-Iftar timing during Ramadan.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run only in India. For top-band work the argument for online is specialist reach rather than price, although the price argument exists too: in-home rates in the emirate are quoted at AED 180 to AED 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to AED 500 by independent home tutors, against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor online and AED 200 to AED 450 and above for an exam-year specialist. A family in Al Ain and a family on Saadiyat Island choose from the same pool online, and from very different pools otherwise.

Private schools in Abu Dhabi are overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate; Dubai's regulator is the Knowledge and Human Development Authority and Sharjah's is the Sharjah Private Education Authority. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or partnership from any regulator or examination board, and no page of ours should suggest otherwise. Individual private tutors in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years.

Two further limits. No tutor can guarantee a grade, and a top-grade target in particular depends on thresholds nobody knows in advance. And where no specialist is free for your subject at the hours you need, we say so and offer a different slot, a later start or a referral rather than filling the hour with someone who cannot mark the paper to the published scheme.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

A top-grade campaign needs regular short practice rather than occasional long sessions, and whether a week contains it depends on the commute. These notes are about available hours.

Saadiyat Island

The shortest school runs in the capital, which lets a candidate sit a timed section on a weekday evening and still have time to review it. For top-band work, where the gains come from frequency, that is a material advantage.

Al Bateen and Al Mushrif

Established island communities with manageable travel and a strong concentration of Extended-tier science candidates. Competition for the same specialists peaks here between the mock window and the June series.

Al Reem Island

Dense apartment living and minimal travel, which suits the short frequent sessions that command-word and method-line habits respond to. The practical constraint is a quiet room for a timed paper rather than the clock.

Khalifa City and Al Shamkha

A long term-time school run that removes a substantial part of each weekday evening. Candidates here do better with two short weekday technique sessions and one weekend timed paper than with three equal slots.

Al Raha and Al Bandar

Adjacent to the main school cluster and the heaviest source of Extended-tier Physics and Chemistry demand in the emirate. Specialist availability in this corridor is tightest exactly when a top-grade candidate wants it.

Yas Island and West Yas

A growing Year 11 cohort with a slow afternoon commute. Families here often want one session on technique and one on a marked paper in the same week, which works if both are booked rather than one displacing the other.

Al Ain

An hour inland with a thin local pool of Extended-tier specialists. A candidate here wanting Additional Mathematics marked by somebody who teaches it has no local route, which is the practical argument for live video.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one email to the exams officer

Ask which board and option code each subject is entered under, on which grade scale it is reported, at which tier, and when the internal entry cut-off falls. Those four answers determine whether a top grade is even available in that series, and they cost nothing to obtain.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson on a recent marked paper

One free trial lesson with the subject specialist, on the condition that it is a single lesson, spent reading a marked paper against the published mark scheme. The output is a written list of where the last marks went, grouped into the five top-band habits.

  3. 03

Read the published thresholds for the subject

Look up the board's published grade thresholds for recent series in that specific subject. That converts a vague target into a number of marks in play, which is the difference between a cheap narrow plan and an expensive broad one.

  4. 04

Install one habit at a time, with a stated test

Short frequent sessions, one named habit each, with a marked timed section every second session to show whether the correction held. Naming the test in advance makes the plan checkable, and if the habit has not moved we change the approach rather than repeating it.

  5. 05

Rehearse the components the school practises least

Alternative-to-practical papers, long data-analysis questions and timed composition, under the real duration and marked strictly. These hold a disproportionate share of top-band marks precisely because they are awkward for a classroom to run regularly.

  6. 06

    The honest fallback

If the entry is at Core tier, a top grade is not available in that series and we say so rather than selling a campaign for it. If no specialist is free at the hours you need, we offer a different slot, a later start or a referral elsewhere.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We check the grade scale before anything else

Cambridge reports most international GCSE subjects A* to G and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE reports 9 to 1, and Abu Dhabi schools use both, sometimes within one year group. A family can spend a term chasing a grade their board does not issue, and no competing page in this market raises it.

No invented threshold percentage

Grade thresholds are set per series after the papers are sat and published by the board, so there is no standing mark for a top grade. We tell families where to read their own subject's recent thresholds rather than quoting a number that applies to one historical series.

Losses named by component

At the top of the range the marks are going to five specific habits in two or three specific components, not across the syllabus. Finding which takes one marked paper, and the plan afterwards is short. Buying general revision for a four-mark gap is the common overspend here.

The components schools practise least

Alternative-to-practical papers and long data questions hold a disproportionate share of top-band marks because they are awkward to run in a classroom. Rehearsing them under the real duration is where an outside session adds something the school has not already provided.

Materials cited, never redistributed

Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and threshold tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson. We reference and link them rather than hosting them, and a tutor offering a folder of mark schemes is offering something they are not entitled to distribute.

No accreditation claim, no guarantee

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or partnership from any regulator or board, and we say so. Nobody can guarantee a grade, least of all one that depends on thresholds set after the papers are sat. What is offered is marked work and named repairs.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Does my child's IGCSE board even award an A*?+

Check per subject, because Abu Dhabi schools use both boards and sometimes mix them within a year group. Cambridge International reports most international GCSE subjects on an A* to G scale, so an A* exists there. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE reports on a 9 to 1 scale, where the top grade is a 9 and no A* is issued. One email to the exams officer asking which board and option code each subject is entered under settles it, and it changes the target you should be working towards.

Is a grade 9 the same as an A*?+

They are top grades on two different scales, and how they compare is determined by the boards and interpreted by the institutions reading them, not by a tutoring service. The 9 to 1 scale was designed with the top band set above the previous top grade, so the two are not a straight swap. Where the comparison matters to your family, read the board's own published explanation and ask the receiving sixth form or university in writing what it requires on which scale.

Can a candidate entered at Core tier still get a top grade?+

No. In tiered subjects the top grades are available only at Extended tier, and the tier is fixed in the entry submitted by the centre before its internal cut-off. A Core entry caps the ceiling for that series regardless of performance, and no teaching changes it afterwards. This is why the first action in a top-grade plan is confirming the tier in writing. If the entry is already at Core, the honest options are a later series or a different target.

What percentage does an A* need in IGCSE?+

There is no standing figure, and any page quoting one is reporting a single historical series or inventing it. Grade thresholds are set per series by the board after the papers have been sat and the cohort's performance is known, and they differ by subject, by component and by series. What you can do is read the board's published thresholds for recent series in your child's specific subject, which gives a realistic band and turns a vague target into a number of marks in play.

Which IGCSE component holds the most recoverable top-band marks?+

In the sciences, the alternative-to-practical paper, and it is also the component schools practise least because it is awkward to run. It asks candidates to identify variables, criticise a method, read a scale precisely, draw a graph to the expected conventions and justify anomalies. None of that is covered by revising theory. Three or four past papers of that component, marked strictly, usually produces more marks per hour than any other block available in Physics, Chemistry or Biology.

My child understands everything but still misses the top grade. Why?+

Five habits account for most of it, and all five are visible in a marked script. Method lines left unwritten, because the step was obvious. Command words answered loosely, so a described answer meets an explain question. Papers not finished, because a six-mark answer was given to a three-mark question earlier. Rounding before the final step, or units and labels omitted. And no sanity check on a result any sketch would have flagged. Each is a habit with a fixed cost in sessions, not a knowledge gap.

How many sessions does a top-band repair usually take?+

Fewer than families expect, which is why the diagnostic comes first. Installing a method-line or command-word habit is typically two or three sessions plus short marked sets to maintain it, because habits regress under exam pressure. Rehearsing a low-frequency component such as alternative-to-practical is three or four papers. A genuine content gap is the expensive case and the only one that justifies a term. A marked paper tells you which of these you are buying.

What does Extended-tier coaching cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Market rates in the emirate run AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor online, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150, and AED 200 to AED 450 and above for an exam-year specialist, per Bestimate's Dubai rate table, with TutorChase at AED 270. Budget online options run AED 33 to AED 65, per Tutopiya and EdFlik. Those are market figures, not an IB Gram price list, and for a top-band candidate the number of hours matters more than the rate.

Should we rehearse with past papers or with the textbook?+

Past papers, marked against the published mark scheme, every time. At the top of the range the content is known and the marks are going to how answers are presented, which a textbook cannot show. The important discipline is marking strictly rather than generously, because a generous mark conceals exactly the small losses the campaign is meant to remove. Use the official sources for papers and schemes; we link them rather than redistributing material that belongs to the boards.

Does the Cambridge zone timetable matter for a June entry?+

Yes, and it takes five minutes to check. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, each with its own timetable version, and states that it is essential to use the correct version for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask the centre which zone it sits in and build the revision calendar from that timetable. A plan built from the wrong version can place a candidate in the wrong room on the wrong day.

Can my child bank a strong paper and re-sit a weaker one?+

On some Pearson qualifications the modular structure allows a candidate to carry forward a result and re-sit a component rather than the whole qualification, which is a genuinely useful option for a top-grade candidate. Cambridge's structure differs and the carry-forward rules are set by the board. Either way the sequencing decision sits with the entry, so raise it with the exams officer early rather than assuming. The answer changes how a campaign is planned and what it costs.

Is a top IGCSE grade necessary for an Abu Dhabi sixth form?+

Entry requirements are set by each school and published on its own admissions pages, and several specify both grade and tier for AS sciences and mathematics. Ask the receiving school in writing which grades on which scale it requires, since it may be reading both grade scales in the same admissions round. Nothing on this page implies that tutoring is required to meet an admissions requirement; the requirement belongs to the institution and the route through it is the institution's to describe.

How late can a top-grade plan still start?+

Habits need a term to install and maintain, so a plan beginning after the mock window is working with less than it should. Even so, the two highest-yield blocks are both short: rehearsing the low-frequency components, and timed full papers in the final weeks. A candidate starting eight weeks out can still realistically do both. What cannot be done late is building algebraic fluency or closing a genuine content gap, and an honest adviser says which case applies.

Which IGCSE series does an Abu Dhabi centre enter candidates for?+

UAE candidates sit the June and November series; the Cambridge February/March series is offered to India only. For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Build any plan against the board's live official timetable rather than a restated date, because provisional timetables are revised. Your centre confirms which series it has entered your child for.

Settle the scale and the tier, then find the last marks

Two emails and one session do most of the work on this page. Ask the exams officer which board, option code, grade scale and tier each subject is entered under, and when the internal cut-off falls. Then look up the board's published thresholds for recent series in that subject, so the target becomes a number of marks rather than a letter. Finally, have one recent marked paper read against the mark scheme to find which of the five top-band habits is costing them. Book a free trial lesson with a subject specialist for that reading and keep the written list either way.
