IGCSE Tutor near me in Umm Al Quwain

Typing IGCSE tutor near me in Umm Al Quwain returns a map, and a map cannot tell you whether anything is working. What can is a record: the marked papers, the question-level analysis, the marks recovered on comparable questions and what exists in the file at week two, four, eight and twelve. This page sets out that record in full, so you can judge any tutor by evidence rather than by proximity. Lessons run online on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Every lost mark typed and turned into a next action
  • A named evidence file at weeks two, four, eight and twelve

IB & IGCSE in Umm Al Quwain

Proximity is not evidence, and a record is

A search for an IGCSE tutor near me in Umm Al Quwain is a search for reassurance, and the format of the answer it returns is a list of names sorted by distance. Distance is a reasonable thing to want. It is not a reasonable thing to buy on, because it says nothing about whether a particular student's marks will move. The only thing that says that is a record: marked papers before and after, every lost mark accounted for, and a written statement of what changed.

This emirate makes the point sharper than most. Umm Al Quwain is the least populous emirate and most internationally schooled students here attend school in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah. The nearest IGCSE tutor is frequently no nearer than the school is, and the pool within a short drive of Al Raas or Falaj Al Mualla is genuinely thin. Choosing on proximity in a place with almost no proximity to choose from narrows the field to whoever is available rather than whoever fits.

So this page replaces the map with a file. It sets out what question-level analysis of a marked paper actually looks like, the six places a mark can go and which of them a weekly hour genuinely repairs, why a mark total is not a percentage and how to track movement honestly across a year, and precisely what should exist in writing after two, four, eight and twelve weeks. Those four checkpoints are the ones that let a parent judge a tutor without being an expert in the subject. None of them requires you to understand the chemistry; they require you to know which document should exist by which week, and to ask for it when it does not.

It also covers what to do when the evidence is bad. A plan that has not moved marks by week twelve is not a plan that needs more time; it is the wrong plan, and continuing costs the weeks a different approach would have used. Narrowing to one subject, changing tutor and stopping altogether are all legitimate conclusions from a file, and a tutor unwilling to write any of them down is not giving you a record, they are giving you reassurance in a different format.

Finally it covers the practical side of keeping a record when the tutor is not in the room: which files exist, who holds them, what is recorded and what happens to a child's personal data. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India, and for a household in Falaj Al Mualla that distinction is more useful stated than implied.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The record looks different depending on which qualification a student is sitting, because the evidence available differs. These are the three routes Umm Al Quwain families ask about.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Externally examined in a June series and a November series, with four-digit syllabus codes such as 0580 mathematics and 0620 chemistry and a Core or Extended tier in many subjects. Past papers and mark schemes exist in quantity, which makes this the qualification where an evidence file is easiest to build and hardest to excuse not having.

Umm Al Quwain students usually sit papers at a centre in the emirate where their school is, which adds a logistical layer on exam day. It also means entry decisions, including the tier that caps the grade, are taken by a school the family travels to. Get both in writing at the start of Year 10.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Examined in May or June and in November, with codes such as 4MA1 for mathematics. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Provisional timetables are published ahead of each series and can be revised.

A family comparing one child's Pearson scripts with another's Cambridge scripts is comparing different papers with different mark schemes, so the records are not interchangeable. Each child needs their own file, built from their own board's schemes, which is a point worth making before anybody tries to run both from one session.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma and International A Level

The two routes at sixteen. Both add internally assessed work to the record, which changes what evidence looks like: drafts with supervisor comments alongside marked papers. The IGCSE habit of reading your own script against a mark scheme is the single most useful thing a student can carry into either route.

A Core-tier IGCSE mathematics candidate entering Higher Level mathematics in the Diploma is starting with a gap that the record will show in the first term. Building the file in Year 11 makes that visible early enough to plan around rather than discover in October of Year 12.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The subjects below are described by what their evidence looks like, because what you can measure differs by paper. These are the ones Umm Al Quwain families ask about most.

Mathematics (0580 and 4MA1)

Core and Extended, or tiered by board

The easiest subject to build a record in, because marks are unambiguous and topics are cleanly separable. Question-level analysis of one paper typically shows two or three topics carrying most of the loss plus a consistent failure to show working. Both are measurable again on the next paper, which makes progress provable rather than asserted.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Single tier

Taken alongside the main syllabus by students heading for mathematics-heavy sixth-form study. Progress shows quickly in calculus and series questions, where either the technique is there or it is not. A thin tutor pool in the northern emirates means availability, not evidence, is usually the binding constraint here.

Physics (0625 and 4PH1)

Core and Extended

The record usually shows two patterns: descriptions written where explanations were asked for, and graph gradients calculated without interpretation. Both are countable on a script and both move within weeks, so a physics file should show measurable change by the second marked paper if the diagnosis was right.

Chemistry (0620)

Core and Extended

Mole arithmetic with units carried through is the most countable repair in the subject: a before-and-after on the same question type proves it or disproves it. Extended-only electrolysis and organic content is where a Core-prepared student stalls, and that gap shows as whole questions blank rather than as marks shaved.

Biology (0610)

Core and Extended

Vocabulary precision and command-term discipline decide more of the grade than recall does. The evidence to look for is whether answers that previously described a trend now explain it, which is visible line by line on a marked script. Data questions are the other reliable place to measure movement.

English as a First Language (0500)

Single tier

Harder to measure than the sciences, which makes the record more important rather than less. The summary question is the most countable component: marks for selecting and compressing rather than copying. Directed writing progress shows in whether audience and purpose are addressed explicitly, which a marker can point at.

English as a Second Language

Core and Extended

Progress is measured against the paper rather than against general fluency, and the two diverge. A student whose conversation improves while their examined writing does not has had pleasant lessons. Ask for marked examined-format work in the file, not for an impression of improved confidence.

Economics (0455) and Business Studies (0450)

Single tier

Diagram accuracy and applied judgement are the countable elements. The evidence to look for is whether the student now applies a named concept to supplied evidence and reaches a supported recommendation, rather than describing. Calculation questions in the finance content are a clean before-and-after measure.

Computer Science (0478)

Single tier

Pseudocode written to the board's own conventions and trace tables completed correctly are binary: either the convention is followed or marks are lost. That makes the record unusually clear here, and it exposes quickly whether a tutor is teaching the specification or teaching a programming language.

Arabic and the mandatory UAE subjects

Separate provision by stream

Private schools must provide Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside the licensed curriculum, with separate provision for Arabic speakers and non-Arabic speakers. Evidence here comes from school-set assessment rather than from external papers, so the school's own marking is the record to ask for.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes, each producing a different kind of evidence. All run over live video with a shared screen and a document both sides can write on.

Weekly session with work submitted between

Sixty minutes weekly, with a specific piece of work submitted before the next session and returned marked against the board's own scheme. The submitted work is the record: it accumulates into a file that shows movement question type by question type.

  • A named piece of work due before each session
  • Marked against the board's scheme, with the wording quoted
  • A written note naming what moved and what did not
  • The file grows whether or not anyone remembers the sessions

Whole-paper weekend session

Ninety minutes in which a full paper is sat under time, marked and analysed. This is where most of the countable evidence in a file comes from, because it is the only format that measures timing and stamina alongside knowledge.

  • Paper sat under exam conditions, not discussed
  • Marked immediately with the student present
  • Every lost mark typed into one of six categories
  • Totals compared against the previous whole paper

Diagnostic block with four checkpoints

Twelve sessions with written checkpoints at weeks two, four, eight and twelve. The structure exists so that a verdict is unavoidable: at each checkpoint the file either shows movement or it does not, and both outcomes lead to a decision.

  • Four written checkpoints with the student's own work attached
  • A target stated in marks on a named question type
  • A verdict at week twelve, including stopping
  • No roll-over into an open arrangement without a decision

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Umm Al Quwain

01

Question-level analysis: turning one marked paper into a work list

The single most useful hour available to an IGCSE family costs nothing and requires no tutor. Take the most recent marked paper, a copy of the mark scheme, and a sheet of paper. Go through every question. Write down the marks available, the marks scored, and one short phrase saying why the difference exists. By the end you have a work list ordered by how many marks each item is worth, which is a better plan than almost any tutor would produce from a conversation.

What the exercise reveals is usually surprising in two directions. The loss is concentrated: in mathematics it is typically two or three topics plus a habit of not showing working, rather than spread evenly. And a large share of it is not knowledge. A question answered with the right idea in the wrong form, a calculation with no method written down, a graph gradient computed and never interpreted, an answer that stopped because the clock ran out: none of those are repaired by covering the topic again.

Ordering by marks rather than by difficulty is what makes the list useful. Students and parents both gravitate to the hardest question on the paper, which is often worth three marks. Meanwhile twelve marks are sitting in short-answer questions where the command word was misread. Those twelve are cheaper to recover and they move the grade more. A tutor who starts with the hardest question instead of the largest loss is optimising for interest rather than for marks.

Then do the same thing with the mark scheme as the student, not for the student. Having a fifteen-year-old mark their own script, argue about borderline points and discover that marks attach to specific words rather than general correctness changes behaviour more than being told does. It is also the skill that keeps paying after the tutoring stops, which is the only kind of progress worth measuring over two years.

The six places a mark goes, and which ones a weekly hour repairs

  • Recall gap: months, taught from first principles, then re-tested
  • Method selection: four to eight weeks of mixed-topic practice
  • Question-reading: a fortnight, sorted by command word
  • Precision and method shown: short, enforced by one rule each
  • Timing: three to five weeks of papers against the clock

Every lost mark on an IGCSE paper belongs to one of six categories, and the category determines both the plan and how long it takes. Sorting them is the difference between a tutor who knows what they are doing and one who is working through a textbook in the hope of coincidence.

The first is a recall gap: the content was never learned or has gone. This shows as blank or nonsense across a whole topic, it is the slowest to repair, and it is the only category that genuinely needs teaching from first principles followed by re-testing weeks later. The second is method selection: the student knows several techniques and picks the wrong one. This responds to mixed-topic practice where choosing the method is the actual exercise, and it moves in four to eight weeks.

The third is question-reading, which covers command words and conditions quietly imposed in the stem. It is the cheapest category to fix and often the largest. Sorting past questions by command word and writing one answer of each shape changes performance within a fortnight. The fourth is precision: units, significant figures, rounding too early, labels missing from a diagram. Slow accurate practice with the scheme beside the script is the whole of the remedy.

The fifth is timing, which is a trainable skill and not a personality trait. Timed sections before whole papers, with a marks-per-minute target, fixes it in three to five weeks. The sixth is presentation of method: the answer is right, the working is absent, and the method marks go with the arithmetic slip. One rule, enforced every session, handles it. Four of these six move inside a month, which is why a diagnosed block so often outperforms a longer undiagnosed one.

03

Why a mark total is not a percentage, and how to track movement honestly

Parents routinely convert a mark total into a percentage and compare it with a target grade, and the conversion misleads in both directions. Grades on an examined paper are awarded against boundaries set after the series, based on how the cohort performed and how demanding the paper proved to be. A total that earns one grade in one series may sit in a different band in another. Boundaries are published by the boards after each series and they move.

That has two practical consequences. The first is that nobody should plan from a remembered boundary. Read the boundaries published for the actual series on the board's own site, and treat any figure on a tutoring page, including this one, as illustration rather than as data. The second is that progress across a year should be tracked in marks on comparable papers, not in grades, because marks are stable evidence and the grade attached to them is not yet known.

The arithmetic worth doing is the gap. Take the student's total on the most recent whole paper, and the boundary for the target grade from the actual published boundaries for a past series in that subject and tier. The difference is the number of marks the plan has to find. It is almost always smaller than the family feared and more specific than they expected, and it immediately points at the question-level analysis: those marks have locations.

Tracking then becomes simple and honest. Sit comparable whole papers at intervals, under time, and record the total each time alongside the breakdown by category. A file showing 96, then 104, then 118 on three comparable papers is evidence. A file of session reports saying confidence has improved is not. The distinction matters most in the subjects where measurement is hardest, because that is exactly where impressions fill the gap.

04

What should exist in the file at week two, four, eight and twelve

A parent does not need to understand the chemistry to judge whether chemistry tutoring is working. They need to know what evidence should exist by when, and to ask for it. Four checkpoints cover it, and a tutor who cannot produce the artefact at each one is not keeping a record.

By week two the only honest evidence is diagnostic, and expecting more is what causes families to abandon plans that were working. What should exist: a question-level analysis of at least one marked paper, a target stated in marks on a named question type, and a student who can say in their own words what they were getting wrong. If no marked script has been requested by session two, that is the signal to act.

By week four there should be countable movement on the specific thing that was targeted, even if nothing else has changed. Ten similar questions attempted, with a before-and-after rate. A topic re-tested and passed. The working-shown rule visibly obeyed in the student's own handwriting. By week eight, a comparable whole paper should show a higher total with the breakdown improved in the targeted categories, and the file should hold both papers.

By week twelve there should be a verdict. Either the marks have moved, in which case the next block targets the next largest loss, or they have not, in which case the plan was wrong. Continuing an unchanged plan past week twelve is the most expensive decision in this market, because it consumes the weeks a different approach needed. We write that verdict down, including when it says stop, and the student's own papers go with it.

Reading the school report against the tutoring record

Two documents describe the same student and they frequently disagree, which is useful rather than alarming. A school report is a judgement across a term, written by a teacher who sees the student in a class of twenty-five and marks a mixture of homework, classwork and internal tests. A tutoring record is a narrow measurement on examined-format work under time. The gap between them is informative.

Where the report is better than the record, the usual explanation is that classwork and homework flatter a student whose performance falls apart under time. That is a timing and technique problem and it is good news, because it is among the fastest things to repair. Where the record is better than the report, the usual explanation is engagement: the student can do it and is not doing it in class, which is a conversation with the school rather than a purchase of more hours.

Read the report for the gap between attainment and the comment rather than for the headline. A grade of five with a comment about inconsistent application says something different from a grade of five with a comment about difficulty grasping new material. The first is the record's territory; the second is a recall gap needing months. Ask the teacher one specific question: which topics would you work on first, in order. Most will answer precisely, and the answer costs nothing.

In this emirate there is no emirate-level inspection portal to consult alongside those documents. The federal portal describes the Ministry of Education as playing a pivotal role in supervising private schools in the emirates of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah, while Dubai has the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Abu Dhabi the Department of Education and Knowledge, Sharjah its Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge. Students here often attend school in an emirate with its own regulator, so check which authority publishes anything about the school your child actually attends.

06

When the record says narrow, change tutor, or stop

  • Narrow to one subject when the between-session work is being squeezed
  • Change tutor on a pattern, not on a feeling: two signals is enough
  • Stop when the target marks are recovered, rather than rolling on
  • Triage beats teaching in the last three weeks before a series

The point of keeping a file is that it produces decisions, and three of those decisions are ones nobody enjoys making. Reaching them from evidence is easier than reaching them from argument, which is the practical argument for the checkpoints.

Narrow is the most common. A family supporting two or three subjects at once discovers at week eight that one has moved and the others have not, usually because the independent work between sessions got squeezed. The honest response is to drop to one subject and do it properly. From Umm Al Quwain, where the commute removes a large part of the weekday evening, this is the conclusion the week audit predicted at the start.

Change tutor comes from a specific pattern rather than from a feeling: no script requested, no target stated, the student unable to name what they were getting wrong, independent work flat, and movement absent at week eight. Any two of those together is enough. Changing at week eight costs a fortnight of handover. Discovering the same thing in March costs the series. There is no loyalty owed to a plan that is not working.

Stop is the decision most under-used and most often correct. A technique block that recovered its target marks in seven sessions should finish at seven. A student three weeks from a series with four subjects in trouble needs triage and sleep, not a new commitment. A student who does not want this will endure competent hours without changing. We write those conclusions down rather than rolling a block into an open arrangement, because the decision is the product and the hours are only how it gets made.

07

Keeping the record when the tutor is in another emirate

A file only works if everyone can see it, which raises practical questions that a visiting tutor at a kitchen table never has to answer. Where do the marked scripts live? Who holds them? What is recorded, and what happens to it? These are reasonable questions and a parent should ask them before the first session rather than after the twelfth.

The arrangement that works is simple. The student's submitted work and the marked returns sit in one shared folder the parent can open, named by date and paper. Each session's note goes in the same place. The question-level analysis sheets accumulate there too, so the week-twelve verdict is assembled from documents already visible rather than written from memory. A record a parent cannot open on their own is not a record.

On recording the sessions themselves: recordings are useful for revision and they are personal data about a child. They should only exist with the parent's agreement, with a stated purpose, a stated retention period and a way to have them deleted. The UAE's framework under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection sits behind this, and every page that asks a parent for information about a child should carry a privacy link. Nobody should be collecting a child's school, grades and photograph without saying why.

On the tutor's own legal position, since this is a cross-emirate arrangement by necessity: private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Those tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts is published, so no figure should be quoted. Ask any tutor to confirm their permit.

08

Building the file across Year 10 and Year 11

  • Get the statement of entry with board and syllabus code in Year 10
  • Bring marked examined-format work to any tier conversation
  • Three comparable whole papers a year beat thirty session reports
  • The mock produces the best evidence of the year; do not file it unread

A record built in Year 10 is worth more than one started in Year 11, and the reason is not diligence. The decisions that cap a grade get taken early. In a tiered Cambridge subject the Core or Extended entry sets a ceiling, and the school makes that judgement from classwork. A file of marked examined-format work is the only evidence a parent can bring to that conversation, and bringing it in Year 10 is useful while bringing it in Year 11 is usually too late.

The second early use is board and code confirmation. Ask the school for a statement of entry listing the board and the syllabus code for every subject. Families who skip this sometimes spend a term practising another board's papers, which rehearses the wrong paper structure. From this emirate, where the school is in another emirate and communication runs through a bus timetable, getting it in writing matters more than it would locally.

Through Year 11 the file should accumulate three things at intervals: whole papers sat under time with totals recorded, question-level analysis sheets, and a short written note at each checkpoint. Three comparable whole papers across the year, properly marked, tell you more than thirty session reports. The mock is the most valuable of them and the most wasted: it produces exactly this evidence in exactly these conditions, and most students read the grade and file the script.

Count the weeks honestly as you go. Take the board timetable for your centre's zone, the school calendar and the Ramadan period, and mark what remains. A candidate entered through a UAE centre has two sittings to count towards, June and November, and the entry deadline for each sits months ahead of the papers: the June entry is closed in the spring term and the November entry over the summer, with the exact day on the centre's statement of entry rather than on any public page. That makes the two series a real decision rather than a formality, because choosing November for one weak subject buys five more months of usable weeks on it while leaving the rest in June. Pearson publishes provisional timetables that can be revised, so plan from the live official one. The usable weeks are always fewer than the calendar implies, and a file is what makes spending them well possible.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Umm Al Quwain

Distance is a weak filter in this emirate, and these notes explain why: for most of these areas the nearest experienced IGCSE tutor is no nearer than the school bus goes.

UAQ Marina

Coastal residential area with a long daily run to Sharjah or Ajman. Searching on proximity here returns almost nobody with the specific syllabus experience a Year 11 needs, which is why the record matters more than the map.

Al Salamah

Established residential district close to the main southern road. Students get home earlier than those further inland, so there is genuine capacity for a weekday session plus marked work submitted between sessions.

Al Raas

Older central district with short internal journeys and often full houses. The record is easier to keep than the quiet hour is to find, so agreeing a fixed slot after younger siblings are settled protects both.

Al Riqqa

Residential area where households frequently run two or three children through one evening. Two separate files are needed where two boards are involved, and two sequential short sessions keep both records clean.

Al Haditha and the old town

Compact and central, with the shortest journeys in the emirate. Families here often weigh a group class in Ajman, where the evidence is necessarily shared rather than individual, against one-to-one with an individual record.

Al Humrah

Mixed residential and industrial area towards the Sharjah boundary. The outbound and return school run is long, so an 18:00 start is the one that survives a term and the submitted-work habit carries more of the weight.

Falaj Al Mualla

The inland exclave, a substantial drive from the coast and from every emirate where IGCSE tutors live. Live video is not a preference here; it is the only one-to-one format that can be sustained weekly across a school year.

Al Salam City

Newer development with growing school-age numbers and long commutes in both directions. Weekend sessions carry the whole-paper work, which is where most of the measurable evidence in the file gets produced.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Do the question-level analysis yourself first

Take the most recent marked paper and the mark scheme, and write down marks available, marks scored and why the difference exists for every question. Order the list by marks lost. This costs an hour, requires no tutor, and produces a better plan than most initial conversations do.

  2. 02

Get the board, code and tier in writing

Ask the school for a statement of entry listing the board and syllabus code for each subject, and written confirmation of the Core or Extended tier where the subject is tiered. From this emirate the school is usually in another one, so written confirmation beats a message passed through a student.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the subject tutor

Taught by the tutor who would take the course, with no card required and no condition. By the end you should have the pattern in the script named, a target stated in marks on a named question type, and an estimate of sessions with four checkpoints in it.

  4. 04

Agree the shared folder before session one

One folder the parent can open, holding submitted work, marked returns, analysis sheets and session notes, named by date and paper. Agree what gets recorded, why, how long it is kept and how to have it deleted. A record you cannot open on your own is not a record.

    Hold the four checkpoints

Weeks two, four, eight and twelve, each with a named artefact: the analysis and the target, a before-and-after rate, a comparable whole paper, then a written verdict. The verdict may be to narrow to one subject, change tutor or stop, and all three are normal outcomes.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Judged on marked papers, not on reassurance

Progress is reported as marks on comparable papers with the student's own scripts attached and the scheme's wording quoted. A file of session notes saying confidence has improved is not evidence, and in the subjects where measurement is hardest that is exactly where impressions fill the gap.

Every lost mark typed and actioned

Recall gap, method selection, question-reading, precision, timing, method shown. The category determines both the plan and how long it takes, and four of the six move inside a month, which is why a diagnosed block routinely outperforms a longer undiagnosed one.

Four checkpoints with named artefacts

Weeks two, four, eight and twelve, each producing a specific document. The structure exists so a verdict is unavoidable, because continuing an unchanged plan past week twelve consumes the weeks a different approach would have needed.

Matched on syllabus, since proximity is thin here

Umm Al Quwain has almost no local pool of experienced IGCSE tutors, and most students attend school in another emirate anyway. Matching on the specific syllabus code and tier rather than on driving distance is what makes a specialist available at all.

Boundaries read from the board, not from us

Grade boundaries are set after each series and move, so the arithmetic on this page is labelled illustrative and the real figures should be read on the board's own site. Cambridge and Pearson dates here are attributed to the boards' published documents.

Clear about data, permits and what we are not

Recordings only with agreement, a stated purpose and retention, and deletion on request under the UAE's data protection framework. The MoHRE tuition permit is free for two years and no fine amount is published. IB Gram holds no regulator or board approval and operates no UAE office.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Al Quwain: your questions answered

Why is searching for a tutor near me a weak approach in Umm Al Quwain specifically?+

Because there is very little proximity to choose from. This is the least populous emirate and it has no large international-school estate, so most internationally schooled students attend school in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah. An experienced tutor for a specific syllabus code and tier is rarely within a short drive of Al Raas or Falaj Al Mualla. Sorting the available options by distance narrows the field to whoever is nearby rather than whoever fits the paper your child is sitting. A record of marked work is a far stronger filter than a map.

How do I do a question-level analysis of my child's paper without being a subject expert?+

You need the marked paper, the mark scheme and a sheet of paper, and no subject knowledge at all. For every question write the marks available, the marks scored, and one short phrase for why the difference exists: topic not attempted, method started and abandoned, no working shown, clock ran out. Then order the list by marks lost rather than by difficulty. You will usually find the loss concentrated in two or three topics plus one habit, and a large share of it in things that are not knowledge gaps.

What are the six categories a lost IGCSE mark can fall into?+

A recall gap, where content was never learned and shows as blanks across a topic. Method selection, where the student knows several techniques and picks the wrong one. Question-reading, covering command words and conditions buried in the stem. Precision, meaning units, significant figures, rounding too early and missing labels. Timing, which shows as a strong start and blank final questions. And method not shown, where a right answer loses method marks behind an arithmetic slip. Four of the six move inside a month; only the recall gap genuinely needs months.

Can I work out how many marks my child needs for the next grade?+

Yes, with one caution. Take the total on the most recent whole paper and the published boundary for the target grade in that subject and tier from a past series on the board's own site. The difference is the number of marks the plan has to find. The caution is that boundaries are set after each series based on cohort performance and paper demand, so they move: never plan from a remembered boundary or from a figure on a tutoring page. Those marks have locations, and the question-level analysis tells you where.

What should I be able to see in the file after two weeks?+

Three things and no more. A question-level analysis of at least one marked paper. A target stated in marks on a named question type. And a student who can say in their own words what they were getting wrong. Expecting a grade change at two weeks is what makes families abandon plans that were working. What is not acceptable at two weeks is that nobody has asked to see a marked script, because that means the teaching is aimed at a subject rather than at your child and will keep being aimed there.

What does real evidence of progress look like at eight weeks?+

A comparable whole paper, sat under time, with a higher total than the earlier one and a breakdown showing improvement in the categories that were targeted. Both papers should be in the file. If the targeted category was question-reading, the short-answer marks should have risen even if the hardest questions are unchanged. What does not count as evidence at eight weeks: a sequence of session notes describing topics covered, or a report that the student seems more confident. Those may be true and they are not measurement.

Our school report and the tutoring record disagree. Which should I believe?+

Both, because they measure different things and the gap is informative. A report is a judgement across a term from classwork, homework and internal tests in a class of twenty-five. A tutoring record is a narrow measurement on examined-format work under time. If the report is better, the student probably performs worse under time, which is a fast repair. If the record is better, the issue is engagement in class, which is a conversation with the school rather than more paid hours. Ask the teacher which topics they would work on first, in order.

When should we change tutor rather than give it more time?+

On a pattern rather than a feeling. The five signals: no marked script was ever requested; no target was stated for the block; your child cannot name what they were getting wrong; independent work between sessions has not increased; and no movement appears in a comparable paper at week eight. Any two together is enough. Changing at week eight costs a fortnight of handover. Finding the same thing in March costs the series. No loyalty is owed to a plan that is not producing evidence.

Is the mock paper worth taking seriously, or is it just practice?+

It is the most valuable evidence produced in the whole school year and the most routinely wasted. A mock gives you a full paper, sat under real conditions, marked, two or three months before it counts. That is precisely the artefact the rest of the file is trying to construct. The right response is to get the script and the mark scheme, do the question-level analysis on it, and build the spring plan from the totals by category. Most students read the grade on the front page and file it unexamined.

Where do the marked papers actually live if the tutor is in another emirate?+

In one shared folder you can open yourself, holding submitted work, marked returns, analysis sheets and session notes, named by date and paper. Agree this before the first session. The week-twelve verdict should then be assembled from documents already visible to you rather than written from memory. On recordings: they should exist only with your agreement, with a stated purpose and retention period and a way to have them deleted, under the UAE's data protection framework. A record you cannot open on your own is not a record.

Do we have to confirm which board our child sits if the school is in Sharjah?+

Especially then. Ask for a statement of entry listing the board and syllabus code for every subject, plus written confirmation of the Core or Extended tier where the subject is tiered. A four-digit code beginning with zero, such as 0580 or 0625, is Cambridge; a code like 4MA1 is Pearson. Families who skip this sometimes spend a term practising the wrong board's papers, which rehearses the wrong paper structure. When the school is in another emirate and messages travel via a student, getting it in writing matters more rather than less.

Will a tutor come to Al Riqqa or Al Humrah if we would prefer someone in the room?+

Not through IB Gram. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India. Lessons run one-to-one over live video with a shared screen and a document both sides can write on, which suits this kind of work well because the script, the mark scheme and the student's own answer sit on screen together while a mark is argued over. If a person physically present is genuinely the requirement, a local visiting tutor or a group class in Ajman is the better purchase.

Should we support three subjects, given how little time the commute leaves?+

Almost certainly not, and the file usually proves it by week eight. Three supported subjects means three sets of independent work between sessions, and from this emirate the outbound and return school run removes a large part of the weekday evening. What happens in practice is that one subject moves and the others do not, because the between-session work got squeezed. Start with the subject where the grade is both most at risk and most load-bearing for the next step, run a twelve-session block with checkpoints, then decide.

Which authority oversees private schools in Umm Al Quwain?+

The federal Ministry of Education, which the national portal describes as playing a pivotal role in supervising private schools in the emirates of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Dubai has the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain the Department of Education and Knowledge, Sharjah the Sharjah Private Education Authority, and Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge. Since many students here attend school in another emirate, check which authority publishes anything about the school your child actually attends rather than about the emirate you live in.

How do I check a tutor is legally allowed to charge for lessons here?+

Ask them to confirm they hold the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, so no rate is justified by a licensing cost, and eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no schedule of amounts is published, so treat any page quoting a fine figure with suspicion.

The strongest thing a parent in Umm Al Quwain can do costs nothing: take the last marked paper and the mark scheme, write down where every mark went, and order the list by marks lost. That single sheet tells you what to buy and lets you judge whoever you hire on evidence rather than distance. Send it, with the statement of entry and the tier, and take the free trial lesson with the tutor who would teach the course. You will get the pattern named, a target in marks, four checkpoints with named artefacts, and a written verdict at week twelve that may well say stop.
