IGCSE Home Tutor in Umm Al Quwain

Parents searching for an IGCSE home tutor in Umm Al Quwain are usually solving a logistics problem, not a teaching one. This page answers the question properly: what a visiting tutor costs in the northern emirates, which IGCSE components genuinely need somebody in the room, and which are taught better on a screen. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video and does not send tutors to homes in this emirate, so the comparison below is made honestly rather than sold.

What a family here is actually buying when they ask for a home tutor

The phrase home tutor describes a delivery method, and most parents who type it are describing something else: a child who has fallen behind in two subjects, an exam series that is closer than it looks, and no realistic way to drive anywhere after a school run that ends at five. The home visit is the solution they have seen advertised. It is not necessarily the solution that fits Umm Al Quwain.

Start with the arithmetic that nobody itemises. A specialist who teaches Cambridge Chemistry 0620 or Pearson Edexcel Mathematics A 4MA1 is far more likely to be based in Dubai or Sharjah than in this emirate. A round trip to Al Salamah or Al Raas costs that tutor between ninety minutes and two hours of unpaid time on a weekday evening. Market quotes reflect it: UAE in-home rates run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor teaching online, with Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table putting in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350 and home tutor listings reaching AED 500.

Then look at what the premium buys. It does not buy a better teacher, because the same person charges both rates. It buys their presence, and the price of that presence is paid twice: once in dirhams, and once in the size of the pool you can choose from. The tutors willing to drive to Falaj Al Mualla on a Tuesday evening are a small subset of the tutors who can teach Additional Mathematics 0606, and the overlap between those two sets is where most northern-emirates families get stuck.

The useful question is therefore not whether a tutor sits beside your child, but which parts of an IGCSE actually require it. That turns out to be a short and specific list, and this page works through it component by component: written papers, practical science, the alternative-to-practical paper, speaking components, coursework and timed paper practice. Some of those benefit from presence. Most do not, and two are taught better on a screen because the mark scheme and the student's own written work can both be visible at once.

IB Gram delivers tuition for UAE families as one-to-one live video lessons. Home visits are a service offered only in India, and no tutor is sent to an address in Umm Al Quwain. What a family here gets instead is a specialist in the exact specification their child is entered for, a fixed weekly slot that survives a long commute, and written feedback after every session that can be read against the school's own reports. The rest of this page is the working behind that position rather than the assertion of it.

At a glance

  • In-home market rates carry a travel loading the invoice rarely separates out
  • Practical tests are sat at the exam centre under supervision, with no outside tutor present
  • The alternative-to-practical paper is written, so it is fully teachable over video
  • Speaking components need a quiet room and a microphone, not a visitor
  • Timed paper practice works better over video, because the mark scheme can be shared on screen
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three programme stages and one administrative reality shape what a tutor can do for a student in this emirate. The notes below are specific to Umm Al Quwain rather than to the UAE in general.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Separate syllabuses with separate codes, most of them tiered Core or Extended. Sciences add either a practical test sat at the centre or a written alternative-to-practical paper. The examined components, not the textbook, decide what a weekly hour should contain in the two years before the series.

Umm Al Quwain students are usually entered through a centre in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah, because the school is there. Practical tests therefore happen in another emirate on a date set by that centre, which is one reason a visiting tutor cannot help with that component wherever they live.

4XXAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Mathematics A 4MA1 is tiered Foundation or Higher; the separate sciences 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1 are single-tier and examine practical skills inside the written papers. Grades are reported 9 to 1. Exams run in May/June and November, so a resit in a single subject is a genuine planning option.

Pearson's November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. For a northern-emirates student who missed a grade in June, that November window is close enough to work towards without losing a year.

Mandatory UAE subjects alongside the international programme

Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies run beside the licensed international curriculum in UAE private schools. They are examined and reported by the school, and they are frequently the subjects a family discovers late, because the IGCSE conversation at home is about maths and science.

KHDA's guidance for Dubai schools requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and prohibits combined classes because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Schools in Umm Al Quwain sit under Ministry of Education supervision, so confirm the stream your child is placed in with the school.

POST16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

The grades that open Year 12

IGCSE results are entry conditions. Schools typically want a grade 6 or a B before an A Level subject and a 7 or an A before a Higher Level Diploma subject. Maths and the sciences are the common blockers, which is why a grade 5 in Year 11 narrows choices two years before anyone applies anywhere.

For the Ministry of Education's British track, equivalency requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects. Check the current requirement on moe.gov.ae before planning around it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is described by what a weekly hour actually repairs in it, and by whether any part of it genuinely needs an adult physically present. That is the decision this page exists to help with.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580 / Edexcel 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

A weekly hour repairs unwritten working, non-calculator fluency and the identification move on multi-step questions. Nothing in it needs presence: a shared screen with the student's photographed working and the mark scheme side by side shows more than a tutor leaning over a kitchen table can.

Physics (Cambridge 0625 / Edexcel 4PH1)

Core and Extended · single tier at Pearson

The repairs are formula selection, unit handling and the apparatus questions on the alternative-to-practical paper. The one component that needs a room is the Cambridge practical test, and that is sat at the exam centre under supervision where no private tutor may be present anyway.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620 / Edexcel 4CH1)

Core and Extended · single tier at Pearson

Mole and reacting-mass calculations are the grade, and they are repaired by making the sequence of steps fixed and written. Qualitative analysis is recall of a table. Both are screen-friendly; the lab work belongs to the school and stays there.

Biology (Cambridge 0610 / Edexcel 4BI1)

Core and Extended · single tier at Pearson

Volume of content is the problem. The weekly repair is converting general description into named structures, named processes and stated directions of movement, which means rewriting the student's own answers against the mark scheme rather than re-reading notes.

First Language English (Cambridge 0500 / Edexcel 4EA1)

Single tier

Summary content points and matching register to a stated audience are the two repairs that move a grade. Annotating the student's own writing live on a shared screen is the core activity, and it is one of the few things that works better remotely than over a printed page.

English as a Second Language (Cambridge 0510 / 0511)

Core and Extended

The speaking component is where families assume presence is needed. It is not: the test is a conversation with an examiner, and preparing for it over video with a microphone is closer to the real conditions than practising across a sofa.

Business Studies and Economics (Cambridge 0450 / 0455)

Single tier

Application to the named case business and a judgement at the end of extended answers. The repair is structural: planning an answer in thirty seconds before writing. Shared documents make that visible in a way a paper notebook does not.

Computer Science (Cambridge 0478)

Single tier

Pseudocode, trace tables and logic gates. Screen sharing is the native environment for this subject, and a tutor who can watch a student's code execute line by line is better placed than one reading over their shoulder.

Additional Mathematics (Cambridge 0606)

Single tier

Calculus and trigonometric identities a year early. Specialists are scarce across the northern emirates, so this is the clearest case where insisting on a visiting tutor means not getting the subject taught at all.

Arabic and Islamic Education

First language and additional language streams

Taught beside the international curriculum under UAE rules, with different expectations for Arab and non-Arab students. A tutor must know which stream the school has placed the student in, because the two are marked against different expectations.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families here structure the teaching, all of them delivered one-to-one over live video with written feedback afterwards.

The fixed weekly hour

One subject, one specification, the same slot each week, timed to land after the school run and before the student is too tired to work. The hour follows the school's teaching order so that the tutoring reinforces rather than competes, and ends with an exam question done to time.

  • Same tutor and slot every week, set in Gulf Standard Time
  • Written note after each session: covered, marked, set
  • Topic order matched to the school's scheme of work

Paper and mark-scheme sessions

From the spring term the work becomes whole papers to time, marked strictly against the board's published mark scheme, followed by a session on the questions that lost marks. Over video the paper and the mark scheme can both be on screen while the student explains their own answer, which is the fastest route to understanding a loss.

  • Full past papers under timed conditions on a weekend morning
  • Strict mark-scheme marking, including method marks
  • An error log that carries forward week to week

Short blocks before a series or a resit

Three to six sessions aimed at a specific component, used by families preparing for a November Pearson resit or for the alternative-to-practical paper. Deliberately finite, with a stated aim, so that nobody is paying for open-ended support in a month that has none to spare.

  • A stated target component and a fixed number of sessions
  • Diagnostic in session one, review in the final session
  • Timing adjusted for Ramadan and school holiday weeks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Umm Al Quwain

01

In-home against one-to-one online, for this emirate specifically

The comparison most providers publish is written to make one option look foolish. The honest version has losses on both sides. A visiting tutor can read body language across a table, can confiscate a phone, and can sit with a reluctant fourteen-year-old in a way that is harder through a screen. Those are real advantages and parents of younger or easily distracted students should weigh them seriously.

What a visit costs is also real. The market premium is roughly AED 30 to 200 an hour depending on tier and distance, the pool of tutors shrinks to those who will drive to Umm Al Quwain on a school night, and a cancelled session cannot be recovered the same evening. For a family in Falaj Al Mualla the choice is frequently between a generalist who will travel and a specialist who will not.

The online version wins on three specific things rather than in general. It wins on tutor pool, because the match is made on the syllabus code. It wins on recovery, because a session missed on Tuesday can run on Wednesday without anybody rearranging a car. And it wins on evidence, because every annotated paper, mark-scheme comparison and written note exists as a file a parent can read rather than as a conversation at the front door.

The table below is the comparison set out plainly. The rates are market bands from named published sources as at October 2026, not IB Gram's own prices, which are discussed after the free trial lesson.

Component by component: what actually needs a person in the room

An IGCSE is assessed through a small set of defined components, and the home-tutor question is best answered by going through them rather than by arguing about formats in the abstract. Written theory papers are the bulk of every subject, and they are prepared by doing questions and having them marked. Nothing about that requires physical presence; it requires the student's working and the mark scheme to be visible to both people at the same time, which is a screen-sharing problem.

Practical science at Cambridge splits in two. Where a centre enters candidates for the practical test, that test is sat at the centre under exam supervision, and no private tutor may be present whatever their location. Where the alternative-to-practical paper is sat instead, the component is entirely written: apparatus diagrams, variables, repeat readings, graph work and method criticism. It is one of the most predictable sources of marks on the specification and it is fully teachable over video from the board's own past papers.

Speaking components surprise people. A Cambridge English as a Second Language speaking test is a recorded conversation with an examiner, and rehearsing it over a microphone and a camera is closer to the real conditions than practising face to face in a living room. Coursework, where a centre has chosen that route, is the student's own work by rule, so the tutor's job there is criteria teaching and feedback on a draft, never production.

That leaves the genuine case for presence, which is behavioural rather than academic: a young student who will not stay in the chair, or one with a specific need for an adult physically beside them. Families in that position should say so in the enquiry. It is better to be told honestly that video teaching is a poor fit than to pay for three months of it and find out.

What the northern-emirates market charges, and where the number comes from

Rates in this part of the UAE are quoted privately, which makes it hard for a family to know whether a number is reasonable. The published bands are worth knowing before any conversation. At the budget end, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52, both online and generally with less experienced tutors. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes around AED 270 for specialist tutoring, and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table runs from AED 200 to 450 and above for exam-year specialists. At the top, BartyED has published AED 650.

In-home visits sit differently. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, and independent home-tutor listings reach AED 500. Monthly packages circulating in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those figures belong to the providers who published them, with the dates as stated.

What moves a quote in Umm Al Quwain specifically is distance, subject scarcity and the time of year. A Dubai-based chemistry specialist asked to drive to Al Raas prices the drive. A request for Additional Mathematics 0606 prices scarcity. A request made in March for the June series prices urgency, because the tutor is turning other work away. None of that is unreasonable, and all of it is avoidable information to have before you negotiate.

IB Gram does not publish a price list on these pages, and any page that quotes a figure as ours is wrong. The free trial lesson comes first, and pricing is discussed in the consultation that follows it, once somebody has actually seen the student work.

The student's own handwriting, and how it gets marked remotely

  • The student writes on paper; only the viewing is digital
  • Annotated pages are saved and sent after each session
  • Timed papers are sat alone and marked between sessions
  • A phone stand above the desk is the only purchase that matters

The objection parents raise most often is practical: IGCSE maths and chemistry are written subjects, so how does a tutor see the working? The answer has two parts and both matter more than the technology does. The student writes on paper, exactly as they will in the exam hall, because typing changes how mathematics is set out and how errors appear. A phone camera or a cheap document camera puts that paper on the shared screen.

What then happens is the part that an in-home session often skips. The tutor annotates the student's own page against the mark scheme, in front of them, marking where each method mark was earned and where one was available and unclaimed. The annotated page is saved and sent. Four weeks of those pages is a record of exactly which habits have changed, which is a different thing from a tutor's impression that things are going well.

For a timed paper the sequence is deliberately split across two sessions. The student sits the paper alone, to time, on a weekend morning, and photographs it. The tutor marks it before the next session, so the hour is spent entirely on the questions that lost marks rather than on watching a child write. Paying a visiting tutor to sit in a room while a student completes a two-hour paper is the single most expensive thing a family can do with a tutoring budget.

The one piece of equipment worth buying is a stand that holds a phone above the desk. Everything else - a laptop, a notebook, the subject's own textbook and a quiet corner - is already in the house.

05

Where local knowledge genuinely helps, and where it is irrelevant

Some things about a tutor's location do matter, and it is worth separating them from the things that do not. Knowing which exam centre a student is entered through matters, because the centre sets the timetable, the zone and the practical test date. Knowing the school's teaching order matters, because tutoring that runs three topics ahead of the class helps nobody. Knowing the school's internal assessment calendar matters, because that is when a student's workload spikes.

None of those require the tutor to live nearby. They require the tutor to ask, and to be told. A specialist in Dubai who has the centre's zone, the scheme of work and the date of the school's mock fortnight is better informed about your child's year than a neighbour who teaches without asking any of it.

Where living in the region does help is in the mandatory UAE subjects. Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies run alongside the international curriculum in UAE private schools, with different expectations for Arab and non-Arab students, and the language of instruction differs by stream. A tutor who has taught inside the UAE system understands why a child who speaks Arabic at home is struggling with first-language Arabic, which is a curriculum problem rather than a language one.

The irrelevant part is proximity itself. There is no pedagogical content in a tutor being fifteen minutes away rather than fifty, once the teaching is not happening in the room. What proximity buys is the possibility of a visit, which costs the premium set out above and narrows the choice to whoever is willing to drive.

06

How long each repair takes, and what counts as evidence it worked

Families here reasonably want to know how many sessions something takes. The honest answer varies by what is broken, and most of the common faults at IGCSE are habits with fairly predictable timelines. Unwritten working takes about four weeks of insistence to become automatic. Non-calculator fluency takes six to eight weeks of short weekly drills. Command-word technique shows up within three or four sessions, because it is a reading skill rather than a content gap.

Content gaps behave differently. A missing unit of work - electricity in physics, moles in chemistry, the genetics crosses in biology - takes two to four sessions to teach and then needs spaced revisiting, because teaching it once and moving on is how it got lost the first time. A student who is behind across a whole year is a different proposition and should be told so plainly rather than sold a weekly hour.

Evidence is the part parents should insist on. After four to six weeks there should be a comparable pair of marked questions: one from the first fortnight and one from the sixth week, on the same topic, marked the same way. If the second is not better, the plan is wrong, the tutor is wrong, or the diagnosis was wrong. Any of those is worth knowing in week six rather than in May.

The table sets out the common faults with the timeline each usually needs and the specific evidence that it has actually changed. Individual students vary and no tutor can promise a grade, but the shape of the repair is stable enough to plan around.

COMMON IGCSE FAULTS, TIME TO REPAIR, AND THE EVIDENCE THAT IT HELD

07

Two children, one household, two different boards

This is more common in the northern emirates than anywhere else in the country, because families change schools when the commute, the fee or a bus route changes, and the new school often uses a different board. A household in Al Raas can easily have one child on Cambridge 0580 maths and another on Pearson 4MA1, with different grade scales, different paper structures and different revision needs.

A single visiting tutor is a poor fit for that household, because few individuals teach both specifications well and the visit has to be shared or doubled. Over video the problem disappears: two different specialists take two different slots on two different evenings, each matched to the specification their student is actually sitting.

What families should not do is put two children in the same session to halve the cost. One-to-one works because the whole hour is diagnostic. Two students at different stages in the same hour produces something closer to a small class, and the quieter child reliably gets less. Where budget is the constraint, alternating weeks between children is a better compromise than sharing an hour.

The exception is two students in the same year, on the same specification, at the same tier, with similar current marks. That can work as a deliberate pair, and should be priced and planned as a pair rather than quietly arranged. Agreed in advance, a pair also makes marking comparisons useful, because both students sit the same paper to the same time and the two scripts can be read against each other.

One further household case is worth naming. Where an older sibling has already sat the series and a younger one is two years behind, the family tends to assume the same plan applies. Boards change specifications, tier decisions differ by school set, and the older child's past papers may no longer match the current syllabus. Check the codes again rather than inheriting them.

08

Who is in the room, what is recorded, and what we keep

A video lesson with a minor raises questions a visiting tutor raises differently, and they deserve a direct answer. Sessions take place in a shared household space wherever possible rather than behind a closed bedroom door, and a parent is welcome to sit in at any time without notice. That is a reasonable standard whatever the format, and families should apply it to in-home arrangements too.

On records, what exists after a session is the annotated work and a short written note of what was covered, marked and set. Lesson recordings are made only where a family asks for them and are shared with that family. A tutor does not publish or circulate a student's work.

On data, the enquiry asks for what is needed to make a match: year group, subjects, board, tier and the school's teaching position. There is no reason for a tutoring enquiry to collect a child's photograph, their full report card or their examination candidate number, and families should be wary of any form that asks. The UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection governs this, and a privacy link sits on every page of this site.

On permits, any individual providing private tuition in the UAE needs the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation and granted free of charge for two years. It is a fair question to ask any tutor, visiting or remote, and a straight answer is the minimum you should accept.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Umm Al Quwain

The travel maths changes across the emirate, and so does the earliest hour a session can start. These notes are about logistics rather than character, because logistics is what the home-tutor question turns on here.

Al Salamah

Closest to the Sharjah road and the most requested area in this emirate. A Dubai-based specialist would spend roughly two hours driving for a one-hour visit on a weekday evening, which is the travel loading built into every in-home quote a family here receives.

Al Raas

Older housing on the peninsula with a short hop to Ajman. Households here often run two boards at once across siblings, so a visiting tutor would need both specifications; a video schedule can simply book two different specialists back to back.

Al Riqqa

Near the Ajman boundary, with the shortest school run in the emirate. This is the one part of Umm Al Quwain where an in-home arrangement is logistically plausible, and even here the choice narrows to tutors willing to drive north after work.

Umm Al Quwain Marina and the corniche

Newer villas, a part-week resident population and the longest commute to a British-curriculum school. Students arrive home after five, so the only reliable slot for a full timed paper is a weekend morning, visiting tutor or not.

Al Humrah and Al Haditha

Old town and industrial districts where IGCSE subjects are sometimes taken as private candidate entries through a centre in another emirate. Those candidates carry their own entry deadlines, and no school office is tracking them.

Falaj Al Mualla

Inland and roughly 40 kilometres from the coastal schools. A visiting tutor would drive longer than they taught. Families here are the clearest beneficiaries of video teaching, because distance stops being a factor in who can be hired.

Al Salam City

Mixed newer housing on the Ajman side, with families often choosing between Ajman and Sharjah schools. The practical question is which emirate's exam centre the child is entered through, since that sets the timetable zone and the practical test date.

School ecosystem

The Sharjah run

Most British-curriculum students from this emirate sit their papers at a Sharjah centre, where the Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education and approves fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say what the logistics problem actually is

The enquiry asks for subjects, year group, board, tier and the time the student gets home. Families who say plainly that they wanted a visiting tutor get a straight comparison rather than a sales answer, including the cases where video teaching is the wrong fit.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, with the student working

Not a conversation about the student but an hour with them, on a real question, with no charge and no card details. The output is a written diagnosis you can keep and act on even if you hire somebody else entirely.

Fix the slot around the school run

The weekly time is set in Gulf Standard Time after the student is home and fed, usually between 6pm and 8pm, with weekend mornings held for timed papers. Ramadan timings and school holiday weeks are agreed at the start rather than renegotiated.

  4. 04

Teach, mark, and leave a record

Every session ends with a timed question and a short written note. Annotated pages are saved and sent, so the evidence of what changed accumulates rather than living in somebody's memory.

  5. 05

Review against the evidence at week six

A comparable question from week one and from week six, marked the same way. If the second is not better, the options discussed include a different tutor, a different subject focus or stopping, and we will say which we think it is.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The comparison is made honestly

This page sets out what a visiting tutor does better and what it costs, with market rates attributed to the providers who published them. A family that decides a visit suits their child better has been given the information to decide that.

Matched on specification, not on distance

A student in Falaj Al Mualla gets the same access to a 4CH1 or 0606 specialist as a student in Sharjah, because nobody has to drive. That is the single biggest practical gain for this emirate.

Evidence you can read

Annotated work and written session notes exist as files. A week-six review is a comparison of marked questions rather than an exchange of impressions at the door.

Clear limits on assessed work

Tutors teach criteria, mark drafts and name gaps. They do not write or rewrite coursework, because malpractice procedures fall on the candidate and the consequence lands on your child.

No office, no accreditation claimed

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no UAE premises and no regulator or board accreditation. Where this site names KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the Ministry of Education, it is explaining what they do.

Scheduling that survives a long commute

Slots are built around the Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah school runs, with sessions moved rather than lost when travel or illness interferes.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Al Quwain: your questions answered

Will a tutor come to our house in Umm Al Quwain for IGCSE lessons?+

No. IB Gram teaches UAE families one-to-one over live video, and home visits are a service offered only in India. The honest reason is worth knowing: the specialists who teach particular IGCSE specifications are mostly based in Dubai and Sharjah, and a round trip to this emirate costs them up to two hours of unpaid time on a school night. Families who insist on a visit are choosing from whoever will make that drive, rather than from whoever teaches the syllabus their child is actually entered for.

What does a visiting IGCSE tutor charge in the northern emirates?+

Published market figures put in-home one-to-one tuition at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table gives AED 180 to 350, and independent home-tutor listings reach AED 500. Monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions have been advertised at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Online one-to-one with a qualified subject tutor is published lower, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150. Those are the providers' own figures as at October 2026, not IB Gram prices, and distance from Dubai pushes the in-home end upwards.

Which parts of an IGCSE genuinely need somebody sitting next to my child?+

Very few. Written theory papers, the alternative-to-practical paper, coursework feedback, speaking preparation and timed paper practice are all taught at least as well over video, because the student's work and the mark scheme can be on screen together. The Cambridge practical test is sat at the exam centre under supervision, where no private tutor may be present regardless of where they live. The genuine case for presence is behavioural rather than academic: a young or very distractible student who needs an adult physically beside them.

If my son writes on paper, what does the tutor actually see?+

He writes on paper exactly as he will in the exam hall, and a phone on a stand above the desk puts the page on the shared screen. The tutor then annotates that page against the published mark scheme while he watches, marking where method marks were earned and where one was available and missed. The annotated page is saved and sent afterwards. A stack of those pages over six weeks is a clearer record of what has changed than any verbal report at a front door.

Is a cheaper tutor at AED 50 an hour a false economy at IGCSE?+

Often, and the reason is specific rather than snobbish. Budget rates in this market, advertised from around AED 33 to 65 an hour, usually mean a tutor who knows the subject but not the specification: they will teach chemistry competently and not know that Paper 6 asks about variables and method criticism, or that Pearson examines practical skills inside the written papers. For content catch-up in Year 9 or early Year 10 that can be perfectly adequate. For an exam-year candidate at Extended or Higher tier, the specification knowledge is the thing you are paying for.

Can both of my children share one weekly session to halve the cost?+

It works only in a narrow case: same year, same specification, same tier, similar current marks, and planned as a pair from the start. Otherwise the hour stops being diagnostic and becomes a small class, and the quieter child reliably gets less of it. Where budget is the binding constraint, alternating weeks between two children usually produces more than splitting every hour between them. Households in this emirate quite often run two different boards across siblings, and in that case two separate specialists on two evenings is the cleaner answer.

Does it matter that the tutor has never visited my child's school?+

What matters is whether they ask for three things: the exam centre and its timetable zone, the school's scheme of work, and the date of the school's own mock fortnight. A specialist in Dubai who has all three is better informed about your child's year than a neighbour who teaches without asking for any of it. Proximity has no teaching content once the lesson is not happening in the room. It buys the possibility of a visit, at the market premium, from a smaller pool of tutors.

How many sessions does it take to fix working that is never written down?+

About four weeks of weekly insistence, in most cases. It is a habit rather than a knowledge gap: the student reaches a correct intermediate value mentally, writes only the final answer, slips on the arithmetic and collects nothing for work worth two or three marks. The repair is making the writing non-negotiable in every session and showing the student, on their own marked page, exactly how many marks the habit has been costing. It is the cheapest grade movement available at IGCSE and no new content is involved.

What is the earliest a session can realistically start in this emirate?+

Around 6pm on weekdays for most of Umm Al Quwain, and closer to 6.45pm or 7pm for families at the Marina, the corniche or Falaj Al Mualla. Students here commute to schools in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah and arrive home between 4.15pm and 5.15pm depending on the route. Anything taught after about 8.30pm is poorly retained. Weekend mornings are the only reliable window for a continuous ninety minutes, which is what a full timed paper needs.

Do lessons stop during Ramadan, or move?+

They move. School days shorten, the family rhythm changes, and most households here prefer a post-Iftar slot to a late-afternoon one. Pausing for a month in Year 11 is expensive in a way that rescheduling is not, particularly if a June series is the target, so the usual arrangement is to keep the weekly commitment and shift the hour later. Shorter, more frequent sessions also work well in that month for students who find a full hour heavy while fasting.

Can a tutor mark my daughter's IGCSE coursework draft for her?+

A tutor can read a draft she has written, explain the published criteria, say which criterion the draft is not meeting and teach the technique she then applies herself. A tutor cannot write, rewrite or substantially edit it. Coursework is submitted as the student's own work and board malpractice procedures fall on the candidate, so the cost of crossing that line is hers rather than the tutor's. Any provider offering to produce or complete assessed work is offering your daughter a risk she should not be taking.

Which details about my child should a tutoring enquiry not be asking for?+

A child's photograph, a full school report, a candidate number or a home address are not needed to match a tutor to a syllabus. What is legitimately needed is the year group, the subjects, the board, the tier and roughly where the student is. The UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection governs how a provider must handle a minor's data, and any form collecting more than it needs should state why and how to have it deleted. Ask before you fill it in.

How do I check that a tutor is allowed to take payment for lessons here?+

Ask whether they hold the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, granted free of charge for two years, and the official route is the Private Tutor Licensing service on mohre.gov.ae, which lists a two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

My son is in Year 11 with mocks already behind him. Is a weekly hour enough?+

For one subject with a clear diagnosable fault, yes. For a student who is behind across the whole year in three subjects, no, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling. The realistic structure from February onwards is two sessions a week in the priority subject - one to sit a paper to time and one to work through the losses - plus a decision about which subjects you are going to accept as they are. Choosing where not to spend is part of the plan, not a failure of it.

What happens if the tutor you match us with is the wrong fit?+

Say so early, and the match is changed. The free trial exists partly for this: it is an hour of real teaching with a specialist, and most mismatches are visible in it. Where a problem emerges later - a personality clash, a pace that does not suit, a tutor whose strength turns out to be a different tier - the written session notes make the conversation concrete rather than awkward. A fit problem spotted in week three costs three hours; one ignored until March costs a term.

Decide on the format after the trial, not before it

The home-tutor question is easier to answer once somebody has actually taught your child for an hour. Send the year group, the subjects, the board and the tier, and a specialist in that specification will run a free trial lesson with no charge and no card details. You will get a written diagnosis of what is weak and in what order to fix it, which is useful whichever way you then go. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, timed around the school run out of Umm Al Quwain, with the slot set in Gulf Standard Time. If video teaching is the wrong fit for your child, we will tell you that too.
