IB IGCSE Home Tutor in Umm Al Quwain

Families who search for an IB IGCSE home tutor in Umm Al Quwain are usually asking one blunt question: will anything actually change? This page answers it with artefacts instead of adjectives. A marked diagnostic paper in the first week, a mark-by-mark comparison by the fourth, a dated draft log on every internal assessment. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so the evening a student loses to the Sharjah or Ajman school run is not the evening the tuition has to occupy.

  • One-to-one lessons over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time
  • A marked diagnostic paper in session one, with the markscheme shown alongside
  • Dated draft log on every exploration, essay and coursework piece

IB & IGCSE in Umm Al Quwain

Evidence first: what a tutor should be able to put in front of you by week four

Start with the honest part. IB Gram delivers tuition to Umm Al Quwain as one-to-one lessons over live video. There are no home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service, and it is stated the same way on every country page on this site. The phrase in the URL is the phrase parents type, and it describes a real need, so this page answers the home-tutoring question properly before explaining why a screen beats a car journey in this particular emirate.

Umm Al Quwain makes the case easier than most. It is the least populous emirate, and the pool of subject specialists living inside it for Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 or Diploma Chemistry HL is close to empty. A family searching for an IB IGCSE home tutor in Umm Al Quwain is realistically choosing between a generalist who can drive over and a specialist who can log in. The second option also removes the travel surcharge that sits inside every in-home quote in the northern emirates.

What replaces the reassurance of somebody sitting at the dining table is paperwork. Not a glossy monthly report with a smiley face on it, but artefacts: the script your child wrote, the markscheme the tutor applied, the mark written in the margin, the second attempt at the same question type three weeks later. A progress report is an opinion. A marked paper with a total on it is a measurement, and measurements are the only thing that tells you whether to keep paying.

Most households here are running two boards at once. An older child sits Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE papers while a younger one is halfway through MYP criteria, or a Year 11 student is finishing IGCSEs while a sibling has just started the Diploma. The two systems produce completely different evidence. IGCSE evidence is raw marks out of a paper total. Diploma and MYP evidence is criterion letters with achievement levels. Conflating them is the single most common reason a parent cannot tell whether tuition is working.

There is a timing problem on top of that. Almost every internationally schooled child living here travels out of the emirate for school, so the day ends late and the evening available for work is short. A tuition plan that assumes a 17:00 start is a plan for a different emirate. The sessions that hold are the ones scheduled around the bus, which usually means shorter weekday blocks and the long timed paper at the weekend.

So this page is organised as a file rather than a sales argument. It sets out the artefact you should expect in each of the first six weeks, how to read a marked IGCSE past paper without a teaching qualification, what a legitimate IB Diploma exploration draft log looks like, where feedback has to stop, what the market charges, and how the Cambridge entry calendar forces the whole schedule backwards. Take the parts that apply to your child and ignore the rest.

At a glance

  • Week one produces a marked paper, not a diagnosis delivered verbally
  • IGCSE progress is measured in raw marks on a named paper, not in percentages
  • MYP and Diploma progress is measured in criterion letters with achievement levels
  • Every internal assessment draft is dated and kept, so authorship is never in doubt
  • Session timing is built around the southbound school run, not around the tutor
  • If the evidence stops moving for six weeks, the plan is wrong and should be changed

Four qualification routes account for almost everything an Umm Al Quwain family needs support with, and each leaves a different paper trail. The differences below matter because they decide what you can legitimately ask a tutor to show you, and what the school keeps hold of until results day.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Cambridge IGCSE is examined in a June series and a November series each year, with syllabus codes that identify the exact paper set a student sits: 0580 for Mathematics, 0625 for Physics, 0620 for Chemistry. Papers are marked out of a stated total and components carry published weightings, which makes this the most measurable qualification a tutor can work on.

Umm Al Quwain students mostly sit Cambridge papers at centres in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah, which means exam-day logistics involve a drive on a fixed morning. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that the wrong zone timetable is the centre's problem, not theirs, so the school's own timetable version is the one to work from.

4MA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Pearson's International GCSE runs in May/June and November series. Codes look like 4MA1 for Mathematics A and 4PH1 for Physics. Some subjects are structured differently from the Cambridge equivalent, with fewer, longer papers, so revision built on Cambridge past papers can leave a Pearson candidate under-practised on question style.

Several schools on the Sharjah and Ajman run enter candidates with Pearson rather than Cambridge, and a few split boards by subject. The practical consequence for a family in Al Salamah or Al Raas is that the correct past-paper set has to be confirmed from the entry statement before any revision timetable is drawn up.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

MYP subjects are assessed against four criteria, A to D, each marked on an eight-point achievement scale rather than a percentage. A student can answer more questions correctly and see no movement in the published grade, because the criterion descriptors reward different behaviour: communication, inquiry, reflection, application in unfamiliar contexts.

The MYP schools reachable from Umm Al Quwain sit mostly in Sharjah and Ajman, and their reporting cycles differ. For a family tracking evidence, the thing to request is the task-specific clarification sheet for the assessed task, because without it a criterion level is a number with no explanation attached.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

The Diploma awards up to 45 points: six subjects marked 1 to 7, plus up to three points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge combination. Each subject carries an internal assessment marked against lettered criteria by the school and moderated by the IB, so part of the final grade is finished long before the examinations begin.

Diploma candidates in this emirate are usually enrolled in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah, and their internal deadlines are set by their own coordinator rather than by a published national calendar. Any tutoring plan has to be built around that school's dates, which is why the first session asks for the coordinator's deadline sheet.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma and MYP subjects Umm Al Quwain families most often ask about, with the component where marks actually go missing. Each description names something checkable, so you can compare it against your child's last marked piece of work rather than against a claim.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, and that is where most of the damage happens. Students who can reach an answer on a graphical calculator lose method marks because the written argument is missing. Evidence of progress here is the appearance of intermediate lines of working, not a higher final answer count.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology use dominate. The recurring loss is the untranslated answer: a correct regression coefficient with no sentence explaining what it means in context. Marked scripts should show whether context marks were awarded, and that is a separate column from the arithmetic.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and energetics generate the biggest gaps between understanding and marks. Candidates describe a reaction correctly but omit the curly arrow or the state symbol the markscheme requires. The scientific investigation is assessed against lettered criteria and is a fixed share of the grade, so draft dates matter.

Biology

HL and SL

Extended-response questions reward structure over recall. Students who know the content lose marks by answering a different command term from the one printed. A useful artefact is a command-term audit across one marked paper: how many marks were lost to explain-versus-describe confusion.

Physics

HL and SL

Data analysis and uncertainty handling cost more marks than the mechanics content does. Graph-based questions carry marks for axis choice, line of best fit and uncertainty bars, each independently awarded. Progress shows up as fewer zeros on the graph items, not as a higher total on the recall items.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and evaluation are where the grades separate. A correct explanation with an unlabelled axis scores under half of what the same explanation scores with the axis labelled. HL adds quantitative items that reward disciplined calculation layout rather than extra theory.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The individual oral and Paper 1 analysis both reward close textual evidence over general comment. Students fall back on summary under time pressure. Evidence of improvement is the density of quotation in a timed response, which is countable in a way that fluency is not.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study questions require the candidate to use the stimulus, not general knowledge. Marks vanish when an answer could have been written without reading the case. A marked script should show which answers were credited for stimulus use, since that is usually the fastest available gain.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Pseudocode precision and tracing tables are heavily weighted, and candidates who code fluently often write imprecise pseudocode. The internal solution is developed over months, so a dated draft log protects the student as much as it informs the parent.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

Together these contribute up to three points to the Diploma total. Both are assessed on the student's own argument, which makes the supervision boundary strict: a tutor can question a claim and point at a criterion, and the words on the page must be the candidate's throughout.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

The IGCSE side of the same household produces a different kind of evidence: whole-paper raw marks against a published total. These are the subjects most often requested, with the syllabus detail worth confirming on the entry statement before revision starts.

Mathematics

Core and Extended

Cambridge 0580 is tiered, and the tier caps the grade available, so the first question is always which tier the school has entered. Method marks are awarded for working that many students never write down, which makes the fastest early gain procedural rather than conceptual.

Physics

Core and Extended

Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1 differ in paper structure and in how practical skills are examined. Where a school enters the written alternative to practical, revision has to cover apparatus description and variable control explicitly rather than hoping lab memory carries it.

Chemistry

Core and Extended

Mole calculations and ionic equations are the two reliable mark sinks. Both are drill-responsive, which is why they are good early targets: the second marked paper usually shows measurable movement on exactly those question types if the drilling was real.

Biology

Core and Extended

Long-answer questions are marked against specific points, so a student writing three paragraphs can score two marks. Teaching the student to count the marks available and plan that many points is a mechanical change with a visible effect on the script.

English as a Second Language

Core and Extended

Reading comprehension items reward exact lifting from the text, while writing tasks reward register control. The two need separate practice, and a combined mark hides which half is actually weak until the script is broken down by component.

Business Studies and Economics

Extended

Both subjects examine application to a given context and both punish generic answers. Marked scripts should be annotated with where application credit was given, because that annotation is what turns a 4 into a 6 over a term of practice.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every request from this emirate, and the choice is usually dictated by the commute rather than by preference. Each produces the same kind of evidence; what changes is how much of a single session is available for new teaching rather than consolidation.

Weekly one-to-one, 60 minutes

The standard arrangement for a student who is broadly on track and needs one component fixed. The hour is split: a short review of the marked work from last week, focused teaching on the weak question type, then a timed attempt that becomes next week's evidence. It fits a weekday evening even after a long southbound commute.

  • One marked artefact produced or reviewed every single week
  • Short enough to run at 18:30 on a school night without wrecking sleep
  • Best for one subject, one component, one measurable target

Twice-weekly short blocks, 45 minutes each

Two shorter sessions beat one long one for younger MYP students and for anyone whose commute leaves them flat by evening. Attention holds for forty-five minutes in a way it does not for ninety, and the gap between the two sessions forces independent practice that becomes the second artefact of the week.

  • Suits MYP students and Year 10 candidates building habits
  • Produces two pieces of evidence a week instead of one
  • Spreads the load across the commute rather than stacking it

Weekend long session, 90 to 120 minutes

Reserved for full past papers under timed conditions, extended-response practice and internal assessment work that needs continuous thinking. For families in Falaj Al Mualla or Al Riqqa, where weekday evenings are genuinely short, this is often the main session and the weekday slot becomes the follow-up.

  • The only realistic format for a complete timed paper
  • Used for exploration and essay work where the thinking is continuous
  • Marked script returned with the markscheme before the next weekday slot

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Umm Al Quwain

01

What searching for an IB IGCSE home tutor in Umm Al Quwain actually gets you

The direct answer: in-home tuition exists in this emirate, it is usually delivered by a generalist, and in the northern emirates it costs more per hour than online work because the rate absorbs travel. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Tuition here is one-to-one over live video, and the specialist is matched to the component your child is losing marks on rather than to a radius around your address.

That trade is sharper in Umm Al Quwain than anywhere else in the country. In Dubai a family can plausibly find a Diploma Chemistry HL specialist within a twenty-minute drive. Here, the realistic in-home candidate is somebody who teaches several subjects at several levels and happens to live nearby. The subject-specialist pool for Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 or Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL is not local, and pretending otherwise is how families end up paying for supervision rather than teaching.

There is a second practical point that nobody writing about home tutoring mentions. A visiting tutor leaves with nothing written down. The notebook stays with the student, the marking is verbal, and three weeks later there is no way to answer the question you actually care about. A session run over live video produces a file by default: the script is photographed or typed, the annotation is on the document, and the markscheme reference sits next to the mark. The evidence is a by-product of the format rather than an extra request.

None of that makes in-home tuition wrong. It makes it a different product with a different price and a different evidence profile, and a family should choose between them knowingly. What follows is the comparison a parent in Al Salamah or Al Raas actually needs, including what each option costs and what each one leaves behind.

The evidence file: the artefact you should be able to open in each of the first six weeks

A tuition arrangement that is working leaves a trail you can read without a teaching qualification. The sequence below is what a competent start looks like, and it is deliberately front-loaded: the diagnostic happens before any plan is written, because a plan written from a parent's description of the problem is a guess.

Week one is a marked paper or a marked section of one, chosen to match what the school has already taught. Not a quiz written by the tutor. A real past paper from the correct board, timed, and marked against the published markscheme with the mark written beside each item. What you receive is the script with annotations and a short note identifying the two or three question types that account for most of the lost marks. If week one produces only a conversation, the arrangement has started badly.

By week four there should be a second marked artefact on the same question types, and the comparison is the whole point. Raw marks on different papers are not directly comparable, which is why the comparison has to be type-level: six marks available on graph interpretation, two scored in week one, five scored in week four. That is a measurement. A rise in the overall paper total, on its own, could be an easier paper.

Weeks five and six are where internal assessment work starts leaving dates. Every exploration, investigation or coursework draft is logged with the date the student submitted it and the date feedback was returned. This protects the student. If a school or a moderator ever asks how a piece of work developed, a dated sequence of the student's own drafts with comments attached is the answer, and it is also the clearest possible demonstration of where the help stopped.

Reading a marked IGCSE script without a teaching qualification

  • Mark every lost mark K for knowledge, M for method, or C for command term
  • Count the three totals before reading any comment the tutor has written
  • M-heavy scripts move fastest and are the correct first target
  • C-heavy scripts need command-term drilling, not additional content teaching
  • K-heavy scripts need study time at home as well as a session

Most parents are handed a marked paper and look at the total. The total is the least useful number on it. What you want is the distribution of the loss, and that is visible to anyone willing to spend ten minutes with a pen.

Work through the script and write one of three letters beside every lost mark. K for knowledge: the student did not know the content. M for method: the student knew it but did not write the step that earns the mark. C for command: the student answered a different instruction from the one printed, describing when the paper said explain, or stating when it said justify. Add the letters up. The proportions tell you what kind of help is needed, and they tell you quickly whether a tutor's diagnosis matches the paper.

A script dominated by M losses is the most encouraging result there is, because method marks are procedural. Cambridge Mathematics 0580 awards marks for working that students routinely skip, and a candidate who writes the substitution line before the answer picks up marks on questions they were already getting right. That change is teachable in weeks, and it shows up on the next marked paper unambiguously.

A script dominated by C losses points at a reading problem rather than a subject problem, and it is the most common pattern among second-language candidates across the northern emirates. The fix is a command-term drill, not more content. A script dominated by K losses is the slowest to move and the one where a weekly hour needs supplementing with real independent study, which is a conversation about the student's week, not about the tutor.

04

Two boards in one household: why the two evidence trails cannot be compared

A household running an IGCSE candidate and a Diploma or MYP student at the same time is the normal case in Umm Al Quwain, because families tend to pick one school run and keep both children on it. The trap is assuming the two children's progress can be read the same way.

IGCSE evidence is cardinal. A paper has a total, a script has a mark, and two marks on comparable papers can be subtracted from one another. Grade boundaries shift between series, so a raw mark does not map permanently onto a grade, but the arithmetic of improvement is straightforward and visible.

MYP and Diploma internal evidence is ordinal and criterion-referenced. An MYP criterion level of 6 out of 8 is not seventy-five per cent of anything; it is a descriptor the work matched. A Diploma internal assessment is marked against lettered criteria with separate mark allocations, and a student can write a markedly better second draft while the criterion level stays put, because the criterion that was capping the mark was never the one being improved. Parents who do not know this conclude, reasonably but wrongly, that nothing is happening.

The practical consequence is that a tutor supporting two children in one house owes you two different kinds of report. For the IGCSE child, marks by question type across dated papers. For the MYP or Diploma child, criterion letters with the descriptor band quoted and the specific gap named. Receiving one format for both is a sign that nobody has looked closely at the younger child's assessment model.

Where feedback on a draft has to stop

  • The student is the author of every sentence, with no exceptions
  • Feedback is a question or a criterion pointer, never replacement text
  • Drafts are dated on submission and on return, and the family keeps copies
  • Published syllabus documents and markschemes are linked from the official site, never redistributed
  • Any offer to supply finished coursework should end the conversation

This is the part of the page that matters most, and it is the part competitors in this market handle worst. Some of them openly sell finished internal assessments. A family that buys one is buying an academic malpractice finding against their own child, and under IB rules that is a risk to the whole Diploma, not to one subject grade.

The boundary is about authorship, and it is simple to state. The student thinks, researches, drafts and types. The tutor asks questions, points at the criterion descriptor, identifies what is missing, and explains the underlying subject content again if the gap is a content gap. Every sentence on the page is the student's. A tutor who returns a draft with rewritten paragraphs in it has crossed the line, whatever the accompanying explanation says.

In practice legitimate feedback looks like a question or a pointer, never a replacement. Where is the control variable identified. Which criterion is this paragraph trying to satisfy. The method section describes what happened but not why that method was chosen, and the descriptor asks for justification. That kind of comment forces the student to write the improvement themselves, which is both the rule and the only thing that improves the student.

The dated draft log is what makes this verifiable rather than assertable. A sequence of the student's own files, each with a submission date and a feedback date, demonstrates development over time. If a coordinator ever queries a piece of work, that sequence is the evidence. Ask for it from the first session on any internal assessment, exploration, investigation or essay, and keep it yourself rather than leaving it with the tutor.

06

What the market charges, and what the fee should buy in evidence

Three of the six competitor pages examined for this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars, a currency no UAE family transacts in. The figures below are market bands in dirhams, each attributed to the source that published it, and none of them is an IB Gram price list. For our own cost, the free trial session and the consultation are the honest answer, because the right number depends on the subject, the level and how many sessions a term actually needs.

The pattern worth noticing is the in-home premium. Bestimate's Dubai rate work puts in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350, with home tutors reaching AED 200 to 500, against qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300. In the northern emirates the gap widens rather than narrows, because the approach drive from Sharjah or Ajman is longer and somebody pays for it. The cheapest tiers, from around AED 45, are university-student tutors, and at IGCSE Extended or Diploma HL that usually buys supervision of homework rather than teaching of a component.

Judge a rate by the artefact it produces, not by the hour it fills. An hour that returns a marked script with the markscheme reference attached is worth more than two hours of homework company, at any price. The useful question to ask before paying anything is what the first session will produce in writing, and whether the family keeps it.

Monthly packages are common in this market, and the figures circulating publicly are around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Before committing to a block, check what happens to unused sessions when a school moves its mock window, because in this emirate the school calendar belongs to another emirate entirely.

Counting backwards from the paper: entries, mocks and the dates that are actually fixed

Every revision plan in this emirate is built backwards from a date somebody else controls, and the date that surprises families is not the exam. It is the entry deadline, which sits months earlier and is the point after which the subject, tier and board are locked.

Cambridge publishes its key dates by series, and the series that matter here are June and November. Those are the two a UAE candidate sits for IGCSE, O Level and International A Level; the February-March series is offered to India only, and the March, May and October dates you may come across belong to Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests, which are not IGCSE at all. Within either series the order is what counts: entries close first, forecast grades are collected next, the papers come after that, and results and certificates follow. Entries for a June series are taken in the academic year leading up to it, well before anyone sits anything, and the exact closing date is the one on your centre's statement of entry rather than a date any page can quote for you. A decision to move a candidate from Core to Extended tier has to happen before that deadline, which means the diagnostic evidence supporting the decision has to exist earlier still, and the paragraph below shows in confirmable dates how wide that gap really is.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November each year, and the published pattern is useful for planning: the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also issues provisional timetables ahead of each series, so the live official timetable is the document to work from rather than any restated date, including the ones on this page.

On IB dates this page says nothing specific, deliberately. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so no session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself. UAE schools sit the May session, and Diploma candidates in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah work to internal deadlines set by their own coordinator. Get those dates from the coordinator's deadline sheet and treat them as the real calendar, because they are the ones that bind your child.

One logistical point specific to Umm Al Quwain: Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, states that using the correct zone timetable is essential, and will not accept responsibility for a candidate who misses an examination after working from the wrong version. A family whose child sits papers at a centre in another emirate should confirm the zone with that centre rather than assuming the timetable a cousin abroad is using applies.

08

Who supervises the school, and what you can therefore ask to see

  • Umm Al Quwain private schools sit under federal Ministry of Education supervision
  • Dubai is KHDA, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are ADEK, Sharjah is SPEA, Ras Al Khaimah is the Department of Knowledge
  • Arabic, Islamic education and social studies are required alongside the licensed curriculum
  • Five IGCSE subjects at grade E or 3 for the British track, excluding Arabic and Islamic education
  • No verified IB points threshold for equivalency is published here; confirm it with the Ministry

Private schools in Umm Al Quwain are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education, which performs the role that KHDA performs in Dubai, ADEK performs in Abu Dhabi and Ain, and the Sharjah Private Education Authority performs in Sharjah. Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge regulates private education there. Knowing which body holds the file matters because the published documentation differs, and a family in this emirate is often dealing with two authorities at once: the Ministry for a school inside Umm Al Quwain, and SPEA or another emirate's regulator for the school their child actually attends.

The mandatory UAE subjects run alongside whatever international curriculum the school is licensed for. Federal rules oblige private schools to teach Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies regardless of curriculum. In Dubai, KHDA's guidance sets this out in detail: separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ; Standard Arabic as the language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs; instructional time calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit with any mandatory subject lesson advised to run at least twenty-five minutes. The same guidance states that using different or additional content for these subjects without prior Ministry permission is prohibited, which constrains how any tutoring on them can be described.

For an evidence file, the useful implication is that these subjects sit on the report alongside the IGCSE and Diploma grades and are frequently the ones dragging an average down while nobody looks at them. They are also the subjects where a tutor has the least freedom to improvise, because the content is fixed. Support here means working through the set material and the assessment format, not supplying alternative material.

On equivalency, the Ministry route for British-track students is published and specific: five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not counted among the five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. One page currently ranking in this market states that UAE candidates need six IGCSE subjects, which is wrong. For the IB route there is no points figure published that could be verified for this project, so none appears here. Equivalency is a Ministry process, not something a tutoring service performs, and the official channel is where it should be confirmed.

What the file looks like when the answer is to stop

A page selling tuition should be willing to describe the circumstances in which a family should stop buying it. There are three, and all of them are visible in the evidence file rather than in anyone's opinion.

The first is six weeks of flat type-level marks on the targets that were set. Not a flat paper total, which can be noise, but no movement on the specific question types the plan named. That is a signal that the diagnosis was wrong or the tutor is the wrong match, and the correct response is to change one of those things rather than to add hours.

The second is a student who has stopped doing anything between sessions. A weekly hour can fix method and command-term problems on its own, because those are procedural. It cannot substitute for independent study on a knowledge gap. When the file shows the only work produced each week is the work produced inside the session, the constraint is time and motivation at home, and more sessions will not touch it.

The third is the good ending, which is the one families forget to plan for. The targets have moved, the method marks are being collected, the internal assessment is drafted and dated, and the student is now capable of marking their own work against a markscheme. At that point the sensible move is to drop to a session a fortnight through the final stretch and stop afterwards. A tutoring arrangement that never ends is not a success story.

On availability, the honest position: specialist coverage is not unlimited, and for a narrow combination at HL in a specific evening slot there are weeks when nobody suitable is free. When that happens the options offered are a different time, a different specialist with adjacent experience, or a wait with a date attached. What is not offered is a generalist presented as a specialist, because that produces exactly the file full of activity and empty of movement this page is about.

Where we tutor

Where in Umm Al Quwain our students are, and what that does to the timetable

Distance inside this emirate is short, but almost every internationally schooled student travels out of it for school. That is what compresses the useful tutoring window. The notes below describe the real constraint in each area rather than repeating a postcode.

Al Salamah

The densest residential area and the one with the most Indian-curriculum and British-curriculum commuters. A bus leaving for Sharjah before seven returns late enough that a 17:00 start is optimistic and 18:30 is realistic on weekdays.

Al Raas

Older established housing close to the creek. Families here often run two children in two different schools, which means two different pickup times and a tutoring slot that has to be agreed around the later of them.

Al Riqqa

Spread-out plots with a longer internal drive before the main road. The practical effect is that Thursday evening and the weekend carry the longer sessions, while weekdays carry short, tightly scoped work on one question type.

Umm Al Quwain Marina and the corniche

Newer apartment stock with a mix of expatriate families and shorter school commutes toward Ajman. This is the area where a 17:30 weekday session is genuinely feasible, which changes how a revision block can be spread.

Al Humrah

Industrial and residential mix on the southern side, closest to the Ajman boundary. Students here are often in Ajman schools, so the commute is the shortest in the emirate and the evening window is the widest.

Falaj Al Mualla

Inland and distinctly separate, roughly forty minutes from the coastal strip. Travel to any tuition centre is impractical on a school night, which makes live video the only format that fits a weekday at all.

Al Haditha and the old town

Close to the government offices and the older schools. A number of families here use Ministry schools and add private IGCSE entries separately, which changes both the evidence trail and the exam-day planning.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Umm Al Quwain

The southbound run: Sharjah and Ajman

Most IB and IGCSE students living in Umm Al Quwain are enrolled in one of these schools. Their internal assessment deadlines, mock windows and report cycles are set by the school, which is why a tuition plan starts by reading the school's own calendar rather than a generic one.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Delhi Private School, Sharjah
  • GEMS Westminster School, Sharjah
  • Our Own English High School, Sharjah
  • Ajman Academy
  • Habitat School Ajman

The northern run: Ras Al Khaimah

A smaller group of families drive north instead, usually for IB continuity or for a particular subject combination. Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge regulates private education in that emirate, so an inspection report for one of these schools sits with a different authority from the one supervising schools inside Umm Al Quwain.

  • RAK Academy
  • RAK Academy British School Al Hamra
  • Ras Al Khaimah English Speaking School
  • Scholars Indian School, Ras Al Khaimah

Schools are named here as ecosystem context for families planning a commute and a timetable; no affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any named school is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the component, not just the subject

The enquiry that gets matched fastest names the board, the level and the thing going wrong: Cambridge 0580 Extended, losing marks on multi-step algebra, or Diploma Chemistry HL with the investigation due in six weeks. Subject and level alone takes longer to match, because the specialist pool is organised by component.

  2. 02

Send the last marked piece of work

One marked script, one report page or one draft with comments on it is worth more than a long description. It tells us whether the losses are knowledge, method or command term, and it lets the trial session start from something real instead of spending twenty minutes finding out what a parent already knows.

  3. 03

Use the free trial to produce evidence

The trial is a working session on live video, timed to suit the commute. It produces a marked piece of work or a marked section, plus a short note naming the first two target question types. If it produces only a friendly conversation, the trial has been wasted and you should say so.

  4. 04

Agree the six-week review before the first paid session

Fix the date, the targets and the evidence you expect to see at it. Two dated marked attempts on the same question types, a type-level comparison, and the draft log if an internal assessment is live. Agreeing this in advance is what makes the review a decision point rather than a chat.

  5. 05

Review, then change something or stop

At six weeks there are three honest outcomes: continue because the marks moved, change the tutor or the targets because they did not, or stop because the student now works independently. All three are results. Rolling on without looking at the file is the only outcome with no defence.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The specialist is chosen by component, not by postcode

Matching happens on the board, the level and the component where marks are being lost. For a family in Falaj Al Mualla or Al Raas that is the difference between a tutor who has marked Cambridge 0625 papers and a tutor who lives twenty minutes away and teaches four subjects.

Every session leaves something you can read

An annotated script, the markscheme reference, the mark, and a note naming what is being targeted next. The format produces this as a by-product rather than as a favour, which is why a live-video arrangement is easier to audit than a visit that leaves nothing behind.

Authorship of internal work is never blurred

Dated drafts, criterion-referenced comments, and no replacement text at any point. The student writes every sentence. That is both the IB rule and the only version of coursework support that leaves the student better at the subject rather than better supplied.

Prices are quoted as market bands with sources attached

Every dirham figure on this page is a published market band with the publisher named, not an invented price list and not a competitor's number passed off as ours. Our own cost comes after a trial session, because it depends on the component and the number of weeks left.

Scheduling is built around the southbound commute

Sessions are set in Gulf Standard Time around the school run to Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah, with shorter weekday blocks and the long timed-paper session on the weekend. Timetables move for mock weeks and for the shortened Ramadan school day.

Coverage limits are stated rather than concealed

When no specialist is free for a narrow HL combination in a specific slot, you are told, with an alternative time, an adjacent specialist or a date. Several providers in this market conceal non-local delivery entirely; naming the limit is cheaper than discovering it in week three.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Al Quwain: your questions answered

Does an IB IGCSE home tutor in Umm Al Quwain teach in our living room or on a screen?+

On a screen. IB Gram delivers tuition to every emirate as one-to-one lessons over live video; home visits are an India-only service and are not available anywhere in the UAE. The phrase is kept because it is what parents search, and the underlying need is real. What changes is the delivery: instead of whoever teaches that subject within driving distance of Al Salamah or Al Raas, the match is made on the board, the level and the component losing marks, and the hour contains no travel. The session also leaves a written record behind, which a visit usually does not.

What should be in the folder after four weeks of IB and IGCSE support?+

Two dated marked pieces of work on the same question types, the markscheme reference used to mark them, a type-level comparison between them, and a short note naming the next target. If an internal assessment is live, add the dated drafts and the criterion-referenced comments on each. That is the whole file. Anything presented instead of it, particularly a monthly summary with adjectives and no marks, is an opinion. A parent with no subject knowledge can still read a folder like that and answer the only question that matters, which is whether the specific thing being worked on has moved.

How do we compare one marked paper with the next when the papers are different?+

Not by the total, which depends on how hard that paper happened to be. Compare at question-type level. If six marks were available on graph interpretation in week one and two were scored, and five of six were scored on the equivalent items in week four, that is a measurement of the thing being taught. Totals are noise at this scale; type-level counts are signal. This is why the week-one diagnostic names two or three target types rather than giving a general verdict, and why the four-week comparison reports those types separately from everything else on the script.

What is the difference between a raw mark and a grade on an IGCSE script?+

The raw mark is what the script earned against the markscheme. The grade is what the board awards after setting boundaries for that series, and boundaries move because papers vary in difficulty. A raw mark therefore does not map permanently onto a grade, and any tutor converting one into the other with confidence is guessing. What a raw mark is good for is comparison: the same question types, marked the same way, a few weeks apart. Boundaries are the board's business on results day; marks by type are the only thing a weekly session can actually change.

Can one tutor keep evidence for an IGCSE child and a Diploma child at once?+

One tutor can, if their subject covers both, but the two files have to look different. The IGCSE child's file is raw marks by question type across dated papers. The Diploma child's file is criterion letters with the descriptor band quoted and the specific gap named, because an internal assessment is marked against lettered criteria rather than out of a paper total. Receiving the same format for both children is a sign the younger one's assessment model has not been looked at. In most households the two children are matched to two different specialists anyway, since the components differ.

How many drafts of an internal assessment should the evidence trail show?+

Enough to show development, each one dated on submission and on return. Three or four is typical over a term: an outline or proposal, a first full draft, a revised draft after criterion-referenced feedback, and a final version the student has checked themselves. The number matters less than the dating. A sequence of the student's own files with feedback attached demonstrates how the work grew, which protects the student if a coordinator ever asks, and makes clear where the help stopped. Keep copies yourself rather than leaving the only set with the tutor.

Which criterion letters should appear in feedback on a Diploma exploration?+

The ones the subject guide actually uses, quoted with the mark allocation, and named individually rather than as a general comment. Feedback that says the work is strong tells a student nothing. Feedback that identifies which criterion the paragraph is attempting to satisfy, and what the descriptor asks for that is currently missing, forces the student to write the improvement themselves. Ask to see the criteria the tutor is working from at the start. If they cannot name them, they are commenting on the writing rather than on the assessment, and the criterion level will not move.

What does a method mark look like, and how do we know it was awarded?+

A method mark pays for the step rather than the answer: the substitution line, the rearrangement, the correct formula written before any numbers go in. On a marked script it usually appears as a tick beside a line of working rather than beside the final answer, with a code from the markscheme. These are the marks students lose most often and recover fastest, because writing the step down is a habit rather than an insight. Ask the tutor to annotate which marks on a script were method marks. The count on the next paper is then directly comparable.

Who should keep the marked scripts, the tutor or the family?+

The family. Scripts, drafts, session notes and the six-week comparison belong with you, in one folder, for a practical reason: if the tutor changes, the evidence should not restart from zero. A new specialist handed a dated set of marked work can begin on week two rather than week one, and you can compare the old pattern with the new one. It also means the record of an internal assessment's development sits with the student, which is exactly where it should be if authorship is ever questioned.

What does the evidence trail cost per hour in the northern emirates?+

The hour costs what the tier costs; the trail should come with it rather than as an extra. Published market bands put budget online tutors from roughly AED 45 to 150, qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300, in-home visits at AED 180 to 500 once travel is absorbed, and IB or IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with premium examiner-experienced tutors quoted higher by BartyED at AED 650. Those are the market's figures, not ours. Ask what the first session produces in writing before paying anything, at any tier.

How far before a Cambridge series do entries have to be finalised?+

Months. Your child sits Cambridge in the June series or the November one, and in both the entry closes long before the first paper, with forecast grades collected before the examinations begin. The confirmable measure of that gap comes from Pearson, whose November 2026 International GCSE papers ran from late October to 19 November 2026 on entries that had closed in the summer term before them, with results reaching students the following January. Any tier decision, any subject change and any private-candidate arrangement has to happen before the entry closes, which pushes the diagnostic evidence supporting the decision earlier still. Ask your centre for its closing date in writing and check the live timetable for your child's series, since dates differ by series, by board and, for Cambridge, by the administrative zone your centre sits in.

Why does this page give Cambridge dates but no IB exam dates?+

Because the Cambridge and Pearson dates were read from those boards' own published pages and the IB dates could not be. The IB's site blocks automated checking, so no session or results date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself, and publishing an unverified date across a large set of pages would simply multiply the error. UAE schools sit the May session. For your child's actual deadlines, the Diploma coordinator's sheet is the authoritative document, because internal assessment dates are set by the school and are usually tighter than anything the board publishes.

Which authority supervises a private school inside Umm Al Quwain?+

The federal Ministry of Education, which supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Elsewhere the regulator is local: KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the Sharjah Private Education Authority in Sharjah, and the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah. This matters for families here because the school a child attends is frequently in another emirate, so two authorities are involved at once. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities also approve fees, curricula and assessment methods, not only inspection outcomes.

Do the mandatory UAE subjects appear in the same evidence file?+

They should, and they are often the subjects nobody is looking at. Federal rules require private schools to teach Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside the licensed international curriculum. KHDA's guidance for Dubai schools sets out separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes prohibited. Support on these subjects means working through the set material and the assessment format, because the guidance prohibits using different or additional content without prior Ministry permission. Put the marks in the same folder as everything else.

Does a tutor working with a family here need a government permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued through MoHRE and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no amount is quoted here. MoHRE's own service page is the route to verify the position.

What happens if no tutor covers the subject and tier we need this term?+

You are told, with options rather than a holding message. Narrow combinations at Higher Level in one fixed evening slot are the usual pressure point, and in some weeks nobody suitable is free. The alternatives are a different time in the week, a specialist with adjacent component experience who can start now, or a wait with a date attached. What should never happen is a generalist being presented as a specialist to fill the slot, because that produces a folder full of activity and empty of movement, which is the failure this whole approach exists to prevent.

Start with one marked paper

If you take one thing from this page, make it the first request you put to any tutor you speak to: what will the first session produce in writing, and do we keep it? A family in Umm Al Quwain cannot drop into a classroom to see how things are going, and the school whose calendar governs the year is usually in another emirate. The file is the substitute, and it is a better one. Book a free trial session, send the last marked piece of work your child brought home, and judge the arrangement on the artefact that comes back rather than on how the conversation felt.
