IB Home Tutor in Umm Al Quwain

Families looking for an IB home tutor in Umm Al Quwain are usually looking for proof: a marked script, a draft read against the criteria, something that shows the hour is working. IB Gram delivers that one-to-one over live video rather than by visiting a UAE address, and this page sets out exactly what evidence should exist after the first month.

  • A marked piece of the student's own work every fortnight
  • Internal Assessment drafts read criterion by criterion
  • Written session notes a parent can read, not a grade estimate
  • Free trial session before any commitment

IB & IGCSE in Umm Al Quwain

The question behind the search for a home tutor

A parent in Umm Al Quwain typing "IB home tutor" is usually not shopping for a format. They are trying to solve a trust problem. Somebody will spend an hour a week with their child, be paid for it, and the only evidence of what happened will be the child's own account and a grade that arrives three months later. The appeal of a tutor sitting at the dining table is that you can hear it working.

That instinct is reasonable, and this page takes it seriously rather than arguing with it. The answer is not that online is more pleasant. The answer is that the thing a parent actually wants - visible, dated, checkable evidence that the hour is moving marks - is a documentation question, not a geography question. A tutor in your living room who sets nothing and marks nothing gives you less to inspect than a tutor on a screen who returns a marked script every fortnight.

So the structure of this page is an evidence file. It sets out what should exist after week one, week two and week four; how a paper is marked the way an examiner marks it, including the method marks and the error-carried-forward rule most parents have never had explained; how an Internal Assessment draft is read against its published criteria and their mark allocations; and what grade movement realistically looks like on a 1 to 7 scale over a term rather than over a fortnight.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE - that service exists only in India - and there is no UAE office or centre. Sessions here are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. In this emirate the format also happens to be the practical one, because the Diploma students who live here mostly attend school in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah and arrive home with a short evening left.

Where an in-home arrangement genuinely suits a family, this page gives the market rates in dirhams so a quote can be judged, and says which situations it suits best. What it does not do is pretend to sell one. The rest is about what to demand from any tutoring arrangement, in writing, before the end of the first month: a named weakness, a method, and work coming back marked.

One caution before the detail. No tutor can promise a grade, and anybody producing a predicted score before they have read a piece of your child's work is performing confidence rather than assessment. A Diploma grade is a band of marks reached over two years, and the largest variable in it is what the student does in the hours nobody is watching. The reason to insist on an evidence file is precisely that it measures the thing a promise cannot: whether those hours are changing.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Each IB programme produces a different paper trail, and knowing which one your child is inside tells you what evidence to expect from a tutor. The notes below are written from that angle rather than as a curriculum summary.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Each subject is assessed against four criteria, A to D, marked out of 8, and converted to a 1-7 grade through published boundaries. Because most MYP subjects have no external paper, almost all the evidence is school-generated: task sheets with criterion strands highlighted, and teacher comments tied to descriptors rather than to percentages.

For an Umm Al Quwain family this is the easiest programme to audit, because the task sheets come home. A tutor working with an MYP student should be able to point at a specific criterion strand and show which band the work sits in, which is a far more useful conversation than one about effort.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects graded 1-7 plus the core. Evidence splits in two: internally assessed work marked at school against published criteria and moderated by the IB, and externally examined papers marked by examiners working from a mark scheme. The two produce different documents and fail for different reasons, so a tutor should be generating both kinds of evidence.

Diploma students here are usually enrolled in another emirate, so the school's internal deadline list is the document that governs everything. Ask a prospective tutor to work from it, and ask to see how the plan maps onto it; a plan that ignores the school's own draft dates will produce evidence at the wrong time.

Mandatory UAE subjects and school reporting

Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies run alongside the licensed international curriculum under the Ministry's general regulations, and they appear on the same report card as the IB subjects, often on a different scale. Parents reading a report are therefore reading two assessment systems at once, which is a common source of confusion.

Private schools in Umm Al Quwain are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education, so reporting formats vary by school rather than following an emirate template. For these subjects, additional or different content requires prior Ministry permission, so any tutoring works from the school's own scheme.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a marked script tells you differs by subject. The entries below describe what to look for in each one when a tutor returns work, because that is how a parent judges whether the marking is real.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

A properly marked script shows method marks awarded separately from answer marks, so a student who sets up correctly and slips at the final line still scores. If every question is simply right or wrong with a tick or a cross, the marking is not following the scheme and tells you nothing diagnostic.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Look for comments on reasoning around calculator results. The commonest loss in this course is a correct figure produced by technology with no mathematical justification written beside it, and a marker who does not flag that is missing the main thing the examiner will penalise.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Data questions are the tell. A real marking should name missing uncertainties, inconsistent significant figures, and conclusions stated without reference to the data. Those are the same errors the scientific investigation loses marks for, so one piece of marking should be visibly useful in two places.

Biology

HL and SL

The useful marking here identifies terminology precision and command-term mismatch, not content coverage. A student who wrote an accurate general account of a process and scored half marks needs the specific missing term circled, which is what a returned script should show.

Physics

HL and SL

Working in symbols before numbers is the habit that earns method marks, and a returned script should show whether the student has it. Unit and magnitude errors under time pressure are the other recurring loss, and they only become visible when a paper has been sat to time rather than worked through at leisure.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Marking should be annotated at sentence level: where a point was stated without evidence, where the analysis slipped into summary, where a paragraph stopped short of linking back to the question. A global comment at the end of an essay is not evidence of anything a student can act on.

Economics and Business Management

HL and SL

The diagnostic marks here are about use rather than recall. A good marker will show where a diagram or framework was produced but never used in the argument, and where a judgement was expected and a description was given instead. That is the difference between a middle grade and an upper one.

Psychology

HL and SL

Marking should cover the statistics section of the experimental report line by line, because that is where students lose most, and should distinguish between listing limitations and weighing them. Both are checkable by a parent reading the annotations, with no psychology background required.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

Evidence here is draft history: successive versions with the research question sharpened, and comments tied to the assessment criteria. The student writes every word, so what a parent should see is a trail of their child's own drafts improving against descriptors, dated.

Arabic and Islamic Education

First language and additional language streams

Mandatory alongside the IB under the Ministry's general regulations, and reported separately. Support works from the school's own scheme of work, since the use of different or additional content for these subjects without prior Ministry permission is not allowed, so expect evidence that maps onto the school's material.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of working, chosen by what evidence the family needs next rather than by preference. All are one-to-one over live video; nobody travels to an address in this emirate.

Weekly session with fortnightly marked work

A fixed weekly slot per subject, with a short task set at the end of each session. Alternate tasks are marked in full against the published scheme or criteria and returned with the lost marks named, so there is a dated piece of evidence in the file every two weeks rather than a verbal account at the end of term.

  • Set task after every session, marked in full every second one
  • Lost marks named rather than a grade written at the top
  • Short written session note sent to the parent
  • Error log carried forward so patterns become visible

Internal Assessment draft review block

A short run of sessions around one Internal Assessment, worked criterion by criterion against the published descriptors and their mark allocations. The tutor reads what the student has written and says where it falls short of a band. The student produces every assessed word, and the evidence is the student's own draft history.

  • Each criterion read against the top-band descriptor
  • Research question narrowed until it is answerable
  • Method taught explicitly: design, data handling, evaluation
  • No content supplied for submission as the student's own

Timed-paper diagnostic block

Full papers sat to time, marked to the scheme, with an error log maintained across the block. Used where content is covered but accuracy, timing or command-term reading is the problem. The output is a document showing which error types recur and whether they are reducing week on week.

  • Papers sat under timed conditions, not worked through at leisure
  • Marked to the published scheme, method marks shown separately
  • Error log categorised by type across the whole block
  • Frequency raised in the final weeks before the session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Umm Al Quwain

01

What "home tutor" buys, and what it does not

The honest version of this comparison starts with what in-home tuition genuinely does better. A tutor in the room is harder for a teenager to ignore. Materials are physically shared, a younger child can be supervised, and some students simply settle better with an adult beside them. For a Middle Years Programme student who will not engage with a screen, that can be the deciding factor, and a family in that position should take it.

What it does not buy is evidence. The documentation a parent wants - dated marked scripts, criterion-by-criterion draft notes, an error log - is produced by a tutor's working method, not by their location. A visiting tutor who talks through homework for an hour and leaves has given you a pleasant hour and nothing to inspect. This is the substitution most families make without noticing: presence feels like proof.

It also does not buy choice. Umm Al Quwain is the least populous emirate and its Diploma students mostly attend school elsewhere, so the pool of adults living nearby who have taught Higher Level Chemistry or Analysis and Approaches to examination standard is very small. Filtering by driving distance first usually means accepting a generalist, and a generalist cannot mark against a scheme they have never used.

IB Gram does not sell in-home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service, and there is no UAE centre. What this page offers instead is the thing the search is really after, written down: specialists matched by subject and level, and an evidence trail a parent can audit each fortnight. The table sets the two options side by side on the criteria that matter rather than on atmosphere.

The evidence file: what should exist after four weeks

A month is long enough to judge the paperwork even if it is too early to judge the grade. By the end of week four a family should be holding a small, dated set of documents, and if they are not, that is the conversation to have rather than waiting for a report card to tell you.

Week one should produce a diagnostic: a short set of questions across the syllabus areas, one piece of the student's writing marked against the criteria or scheme, and a written statement of where the marks are going. Not a grade prediction - a list of specific losses. Week two should produce the first set task coming back marked, with the lost marks named. Week three should produce a second, and the beginnings of a pattern. Week four should produce the first honest statement of which losses are reducing and which are not.

The value of writing this down is that it converts a trust problem into an inspection problem. A parent who does not teach the subject can still check that the dates are real, that the annotations refer to specific questions, that the same error is not being named for the fourth week running without a change of approach, and that the student recognises what is in the file.

It also sets up the six-week review honestly. At six weeks there is enough evidence to say whether anything is moving. If the file shows the same three error types recurring at the same rate, the arrangement is not working, and the right response is a different tutor or a different plan decided then - not a wait-and-see that consumes a term.

THE FIRST FOUR WEEKS — what should be in the file

03

How a paper is marked the way an examiner marks it

  • Method marks are awarded separately from the final answer
  • Error carried forward keeps later parts available after an early slip
  • Significant figures and units carry their own marks in the sciences
  • Written subjects are marked by level descriptor, not by counting points
  • Annotations should name the scheme point, not just mark it wrong

Most parents have never had examination marking explained, which makes it hard to tell real marking from decoration. The core idea is that marks are allocated to parts of an answer, not to its correctness overall. A six-mark question is six separate decisions, and a student can earn four of them while reaching a wrong final answer.

Method marks are the clearest example. In mathematics and the sciences, marks are available for setting up correctly, for substituting correctly, and for the answer, so a student who rearranges an equation properly and then mis-keys a number on the calculator loses one mark rather than all of them. The related rule is error carried forward: where an earlier mistake feeds a later part, the later part can still earn full credit if the method is correct from that point. A marker who crosses out everything downstream of the first error is not following the scheme.

Accuracy conventions carry their own marks. Significant figures and units are credited or penalised explicitly in the sciences, and premature rounding inside a multi-step calculation produces an answer that is penalised even though every step was sound. In written subjects the equivalent is the mark scheme's level descriptors, where the band is set by the quality of argument rather than by counting correct points.

This is why a returned script is the most informative document a tutor produces. A parent can look at it and see whether method marks were awarded separately, whether the annotations refer to specific scheme points, and whether the comments tell the student what to do differently. Those three checks need no subject knowledge, and they separate marking from ticking.

04

Reading an Internal Assessment draft against its criteria

Internal Assessment criteria are published, lettered and weighted, which means a draft can be audited rather than guessed at. This is the single most useful thing a tutor does with a Diploma student, and it is entirely legitimate because the student has written the draft and will do all the revising.

The mathematics exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, with use of mathematics carrying the largest allocation and the rest sitting at three or four marks each. The pattern this reveals matters: a beautifully presented exploration using mathematics below the level of the course cannot reach the top bands, while a plainer piece at the right level can. Students almost always misjudge that trade.

The sciences scientific investigation is marked out of 24 across criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, in equal allocations. Equal weighting is the useful insight: evaluation is worth as much as design, and it is the section students write last and shortest. Economics uses a portfolio of commentaries on published articles with strict word limits; History uses an investigation with its own source-evaluation section; Psychology an experimental report whose statistics section is the main loss. Confirm all of these against your child's current subject guide, since the IB revises them on a cycle.

The method is mechanical. Take one criterion, read the top-band descriptor aloud, and ask the student to point at the part of their draft that does what the descriptor says. Where they cannot, that is the work. Where they can, move on. A tutor talks the student through it; the student makes every change.

05

What grade movement actually looks like

  • A grade is a band of marks, so real gains can leave the number unchanged
  • Answer shape improves first, usually within two or three weeks
  • Timed-paper accuracy takes a term of repeated practice
  • Internal Assessment marks are banked once submitted
  • Mock grades vary by school and read best as direction, not measurement

This is where most tutoring marketing becomes dishonest, so here is the plain version. Diploma subjects report on a 1 to 7 scale, and a grade is a band containing a range of marks. A student can gain real marks and stay on the same number, or sit near a boundary and move a grade on a small improvement. Nobody can promise a grade, and anyone offering a predicted score before they have seen the student's work is guessing in front of you.

What moves first is not the grade. It is the shape of written answers: command terms read correctly, conclusions actually reached, working shown, data referenced. That is visible in a marked script within two or three weeks and is why the fortnightly script matters more than a monthly grade. The second thing to move is usually accuracy under timed conditions, which needs papers sat to time rather than worked through comfortably.

Internal Assessment marks behave differently again. Because the criteria are published and the work is produced over weeks, a draft audited properly against descriptors can gain marks that are then banked, independent of examination performance. For a student who is a borderline grade, this is frequently where the movement that matters comes from, which is an argument for starting the Internal Assessment conversation early rather than at the deadline.

A realistic timescale, stated honestly: answer quality within two to three weeks, measurable change in timed-paper accuracy across a term, and Internal Assessment marks secured on the school's own deadline schedule. Mock grades are a noisy signal, because mock papers and boundaries vary by school, so read them as a direction rather than a measurement.

06

When the evidence says it is not working

Tutoring arrangements fail quietly, and they fail in recognisable ways. The first pattern is a file with no student work in it: sessions happen, nothing is set, nothing comes back marked. The second is a file in which the same three error types are named every fortnight at the same rate, which means the diagnosis is right and the method is not changing. The third is a student who cannot say what they are working on, which usually means the hour is being driven by whatever homework is due.

None of these requires confrontation. They require a conversation at six weeks with the file open: what has been set, what came back, what is reducing. A tutor doing the job well will have the same picture and often the same concern. A tutor who treats the question as a complaint has answered it.

The remedies differ. Where nothing is being set, the fix is usually structural: a shorter session with a task attached rather than a longer discussion. Where the same errors persist, the fix is a change of method - timed conditions instead of untimed, or one topic rebuilt from the beginning instead of papers practised across all of them. Where the hour has become homework help, the fix is to separate the two explicitly, because homework help is a legitimate service but it is not what a Diploma student losing marks on command terms needs.

And sometimes the answer is a different tutor. Subject knowledge, marking discipline and the ability to hold a sixteen-year-old's attention over video are three separate skills. A change request is a normal part of the arrangement here, and a month into a two-year programme is a much better time to make it than after the first mock series.

What in-home tuition costs in the northern emirates, in AED

Families comparing options deserve numbers rather than a brochure. These are market rates compiled from providers' own published figures and from Bestimate's 2026 Dubai tutoring cost table. They are not IB Gram's price list, and they are published here because three of the six pages ranking for UAE tutoring queries publish no price at all while the two that do quote US dollars.

An in-home one-to-one visit, travel included, runs roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, with Bestimate showing AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors asking AED 200 to 500. Monthly in-home packages advertised in the market sit around AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. Online, a budget tutor is advertised from AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik publishing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52, while a qualified subject tutor sits at AED 150 to 300 and Unitors lists IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. A named IB or A-Level specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and upwards, with TutorChase at AED 270, and premium examiner-marketed tutors reach AED 500 to 650 or more, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

The northern emirates distort the in-home band in a way Dubai-written pages do not mention. Umm Al Quwain sits roughly an hour from the Sharjah tutoring market in ordinary traffic, so a visiting tutor is absorbing a two-hour round trip for a one-hour booking. That is paid for either in the rate, in a two-hour minimum, or in reliability - and the cancellation always arrives in the busiest term.

Judge any quote against two questions rather than against the number alone. What comes back marked, and how often? And is the person quoting it a specialist in the course your child actually sits? A lower rate for an hour that produces no evidence is more expensive than a higher rate that produces a marked script every fortnight.

Reading the school report alongside the tutoring file

  • A predicted grade is a judgement for applications, not a forecast
  • Ask which evidence a prediction rests on; that is what tutoring can add to
  • Mock boundaries vary by school, so read mocks as direction
  • Always read a mock grade with the script beside it
  • Give the tutor the school's internal deadline list in full

Two documents describe your child's progress and they do not agree, which confuses parents more than anything else in the Diploma. The school report carries teacher assessment, often a predicted grade, and sometimes mock results. The tutoring file carries marked scripts and draft history. Each is measuring something different, and the useful reading comes from putting them side by side rather than choosing one.

A predicted grade is a professional judgement made by the school for university applications, based on the evidence the teacher holds at that moment. It is not a forecast of the final result and it is not a ceiling. Where a predicted grade is lower than a parent expected, the productive question to the school is which evidence it rests on, because that evidence is precisely what tutoring work can add to.

Mock grades are noisier than they look. Mock papers, timing and boundaries vary between schools, and a school may set boundaries deliberately high to concentrate attention. A mock grade is therefore a direction rather than a measurement, and it is most useful when read with the actual script beside it: which questions were lost, and whether they were lost to knowledge, to timing or to command-term misreading.

Because most students here attend school in another emirate, one practical step is worth taking. Ask the school for its internal deadline list for the year - draft dates, mock windows, Internal Assessment submission points - and give it to the tutor in full. Private schools in Umm Al Quwain fall under the federal Ministry of Education while those in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah fall under their own emirate authorities, so formats vary, and a plan written from the actual list produces evidence at the moments the school is going to look.

Where we tutor

Where the work actually gets done in Umm Al Quwain

The evidence file depends on something mundane: whether the student has a place to sit, a device and twenty uninterrupted minutes. These notes are about that, area by area, because it is the most common reason an otherwise good arrangement produces nothing.

Al Salamah

Mostly family villas and apartments where the usual study spot is a shared living room. A headset and a door that closes change the quality of a session more than any change of tutor, and we raise it on day one rather than after a month of distracted hours.

Al Raas

Larger households are common here, with several children on different school runs. Where two siblings need support, separate evenings produce better evidence than a shared slot, because marked work can be attributed to one student rather than to a room.

Al Riqqa

Closer to the Sharjah road, so students are often home earlier and can work before fatigue sets in. The practical gain is that written work set between sessions actually gets done, which is what makes the fortnightly marked script possible.

Umm Al Quwain Marina and the corniche

Newer apartments with ordinary household broadband, which is sufficient for one-to-one video and screen sharing. The limiting factor is usually a quiet corner and a second device for viewing a paper while talking, not connection speed.

Al Humrah and Al Haditha

Nearer the Ras Al Khaimah side, with many students schooled in RAK. Printing is worth arranging here: a paper sat on screen is useful, but a paper sat on printed sheets and photographed back produces the most honest timed-conditions evidence.

Falaj Al Mualla

Inland and a long way from any Diploma school, so independent study time at home carries more weight than anywhere else in the emirate. A fixed weekly slot plus set work is the arrangement that holds here; anything requiring travel does not.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked script, not a description

The most useful first message contains the subject, the level, and a photograph of a recent marked piece of work. For a Diploma student the school's internal deadline list is the second most useful attachment. Those two documents let a tutor say something specific before the trial session rather than after it.

  2. 02

A free trial that produces a document

The trial session is with the tutor who would teach. It ends with a written diagnostic: the specific marks being lost, the command terms or criteria involved, and what the first four weeks would target. You keep that document whether or not you continue, and it is the first item in the evidence file.

  3. 03

A plan split between internal and external assessment

Internal Assessment and examination papers fail for different reasons and have different deadlines, so the plan separates them and says which gets the hours first. Usually the Internal Assessment leads, because its deadline is earlier and its marks are banked once submitted.

  4. 04

    Weekly sessions, fortnightly marked work

A fixed slot in Gulf Standard Time, one-to-one over live video. A task is set every week; alternate tasks come back fully marked with the lost marks named and the error log updated. A short written note goes to the parent after each session, in plain language.

Open the file at six weeks and decide

At six weeks the file either shows error types reducing or it does not. If it does not, the decision is a change of method or a change of tutor, made then. Requesting a different tutor is treated as a normal part of the arrangement rather than as a complaint.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Evidence rather than reassurance

A marked script every fortnight, an error log that carries forward, and a written note after each session. A parent who does not teach the subject can still audit dates, annotations and whether the same error is being named for the fourth time without a change of approach.

Marking that follows the actual scheme

Method marks shown separately from answer marks, error carried forward applied, significant figures and units treated as the marks they are. Ticks and crosses are not marking, and a script that shows the difference is the clearest proof of a competent tutor.

Internal Assessment work kept legitimate

Criteria read aloud, descriptors matched against the student's own draft, method taught explicitly - and every assessed word produced by the student. One provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments; that transaction puts the student's qualification at risk, not the seller's.

Specialists, not the nearest available adult

In the least populous emirate, filtering tutors by driving distance means accepting a generalist. Online delivery removes geography from the match, so the tutor is chosen for the subject and level the student actually sits and has used that mark scheme before.

Honest language about grades

No grade promises, no score guarantees, no claimed improvement figures. What is offered is a named weakness, a method, and dated evidence - which is both more useful than a number and the only thing anybody can honestly offer two years out from a final session.

A free trial that leaves you something

The trial is free and produces a written diagnostic you keep regardless of what you decide. That is a better basis for a decision than a profile page, and it tells you how the tutor thinks before any money moves.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Al Quwain: your questions answered

Can we get an IB home tutor who comes to our house in Umm Al Quwain?+

Not through IB Gram. Home visits are a service offered only in India, and there is no UAE office or centre; tutoring for families here is one-to-one over live video. Independent tutors in the northern emirates do offer visits, and this page publishes the market rates so a quote can be judged. Before booking one, ask the same question you would ask us: what will be set between sessions, what comes back marked, and how often. Presence in the room is not the same thing as evidence of progress.

What proof should I have that the tutoring is actually working?+

By the end of week four you should hold a dated file: a diagnostic from the first session naming specific mark losses, a written plan split between Internal Assessment and examination work, at least two set tasks returned with the lost marks named, and the start of an error log. By week six there should be a statement of which error types are reducing and which are not. If the file is empty and the only evidence is a verbal report, that is the problem to raise, and it is the same problem whether the tutor sits in your living room or on a screen.

How can I tell real marking from a tutor just ticking answers?+

Three checks, none of which need subject knowledge. First, are method marks shown separately from the answer, so a student who set up correctly and slipped at the end still scores? Second, do the annotations name specific scheme points, or are they general comments at the end? Third, has the error carried forward rule been applied, meaning later parts still earn credit after an early slip? A script where everything downstream of one mistake is crossed out is not following the scheme and tells your child nothing they can act on.

How many marks is the IB mathematics exploration worth and how is it split?+

It is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, with use of mathematics carrying the largest single allocation and the others at three or four marks each. That split explains the commonest mistake, which is a beautifully presented exploration using mathematics below the level of the course. A plainer piece pitched at the right level scores higher. Check the exact allocations against your child's current subject guide, because the IB revises subject requirements on a rolling cycle.

How is the sciences scientific investigation marked?+

Out of 24 marks across criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, in equal allocations. The equal weighting is the useful part: evaluation is worth exactly as much as research design, and it is almost always the section students write last and shortest. A tutor can read a draft against each descriptor and say where it falls short of a band, while the student does every piece of the writing and revising. Confirm the current criteria with the subject guide your child's school is working from.

How quickly should we expect to see a grade go up?+

Not quickly, and any tutor promising otherwise is guessing. A Diploma grade is a band of marks, so real gains can leave the number unchanged for a while. What moves first is the shape of written answers - command terms read correctly, working shown, conclusions reached - and that is visible in a marked script within two or three weeks. Timed-paper accuracy takes a term of repeated practice. Internal Assessment marks are the exception: audited properly against the criteria, they are secured once submitted.

What is the difference between a predicted grade and a mock grade?+

A predicted grade is a professional judgement made by the school for university applications, based on the evidence the teacher holds at that point. It is not a forecast and not a ceiling. A mock grade comes from a paper the school set and marked, often against deliberately demanding boundaries, so it varies between schools and reads best as a direction rather than a measurement. Both are most useful read with the actual script beside them, because the script shows whether marks were lost to knowledge, timing or command-term misreading.

Our tutor is pleasant but nothing seems to change. What should we do?+

Open the file at six weeks and look for one of three patterns. No student work in it means nothing is being set, and the fix is usually a shorter session with a task attached. The same three error types named every fortnight at the same rate means the diagnosis is right and the method is not changing, so switch to timed conditions or rebuild one topic from the start. A student who cannot say what they are working on usually means the hour has become homework help. If none of that shifts it, change tutor; a month in is a much better time than after the mocks.

Can a tutor read my child's Internal Assessment draft without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, within a clear line. A tutor can explain what each criterion rewards, read the top-band descriptor with the student, discuss the research question until it is answerable, teach the method, and say where a draft falls short of a band. The student writes every assessed word and makes every change. What nobody may do is supply paragraphs, rewrite a draft into final form, or provide text submitted under the student's name. One provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright, and the malpractice consequence of that falls on the student.

What does an in-home IB tutor cost in the northern emirates?+

Market rates for an in-home one-to-one visit including travel run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, with Bestimate showing AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors asking AED 200 to 500; monthly packages of four two-hour sessions are advertised around AED 1,599 to 1,799. Add the geography: Umm Al Quwain sits about an hour from the Sharjah tutoring market, so a visiting tutor absorbs a two-hour round trip for a one-hour booking, usually paid for in the rate, a two-hour minimum, or reliability. These are market figures, not IB Gram's.

Does my child need a quiet room, or is a laptop enough?+

A door that closes and a headset change the quality of a session more than almost anything else, and in shared family spaces they matter more than connection speed. Ordinary household broadband across this emirate handles one-to-one video with screen sharing. Two practical extras help: a second device so a paper can be read while talking, and a printer, because a paper sat on printed sheets to time and photographed back produces much more honest evidence than one worked through on screen.

Should two children in the same house share a session?+

Usually not, even when they take the same subject. The marked evidence is the point of the arrangement, and work produced in a shared hour cannot be cleanly attributed to one student, which makes an error log almost useless. Separate evenings also stop the stronger child setting the pace. Where cost is the reason, a better compromise is one child at a time with alternating weeks of marked work, so each has a genuine file rather than two half-files that show nothing in particular.

Which schools do Umm Al Quwain IB students usually attend?+

Most travel out of the emirate, to Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah, because Diploma provision inside Umm Al Quwain is limited. That places them under a different authority: the Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah and the Department of Knowledge does so in Ras Al Khaimah, and both also approve fees, curricula and assessment methods, while private schools in Umm Al Quwain itself are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education. The practical consequence for tutoring is that the school's own internal deadline list, not a generic IB calendar, governs the plan.

Is the tutor legally allowed to take payment for private lessons here?+

They need a private tutor work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so any amount quoted online is unverified. Since the permit costs nothing, a tutor who has not obtained one has simply not done it.

What happens in the free trial session?+

It is a working session with the tutor who would teach, not a sales call, and it produces a document you keep either way. The tutor sets a short diagnostic across the syllabus areas, marks a piece of the student's own writing against the criteria or scheme, and writes up the specific marks being lost along with what the first four weeks would target. You should be able to read it without a teaching background, and it should contain no predicted grade, because nobody can honestly offer one on an hour's evidence.

Ask for the file, not the promise

If you are weighing up IB support in Umm Al Quwain, judge it on paperwork. Send the subject, the level and a photograph of a recent marked script, and we will arrange a free trial session, one-to-one over live video, with the tutor who would teach. You will come away with a written diagnostic naming the specific marks being lost and what the first month would target - and you keep that whether you continue or not. Then set the standard for whoever you choose: a marked piece of your child's own work every fortnight, an error log, and an honest review at six weeks.
