IGCSE Online Tutor in Umm Al Quwain

An IGCSE online tutor in Umm Al Quwain costs less than a visiting tutor for one reason that has nothing to do with quality: nobody drives. Families here commute to school in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah, so a tutor coming to the house is paying for an hour of road in each direction. This page prices the market in dirhams, names what moves the number in this emirate, and states what sits inside an hour. Lessons run on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Umm Al Quwain

Price the hour honestly, starting with who is driving

Three of the six pages ranking for queries like this publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars, a currency no Umm Al Quwain family transacts in. So the first thing this page does is put the market in dirhams with the source of every band named. The second is to explain what changes the number here specifically, because this emirate's geography does something to tutoring costs that Dubai's does not.

Umm Al Quwain is the least populous emirate and it has no large international-school estate of its own. Most internationally schooled students here travel out: to Sharjah's Muwaileh and University City campuses, to Ajman, or north towards Ras Al Khaimah. That commute is the single most important economic fact about tutoring in this emirate, and it works in two directions. It compresses the evening a lesson has to fit into, and it means that any tutor who physically attends the house is driving in from another emirate.

That drive is inside the price whether or not anyone itemises it. A visiting tutor who spends fifty minutes travelling from Al Nahda or Ajman and fifty minutes going home has committed two hours and fifty minutes to deliver sixty minutes of teaching. No reasonable person does that for the price of an hour, and they do not. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, with visiting home tutors advertised to AED 500, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online.

What a family in Al Salamah or UAQ Marina should take from that is not that in-home tutoring is overpriced. It is that the premium buys travel rather than teaching, and whether that is worth paying depends entirely on whether a person physically in the room is the thing this particular student needs. For a Year 7 who will not stay on task without supervision, it often is. For a Year 11 preparing for a June series with a marked script to analyse, it usually is not, and the same money spent on more teaching hours does more useful work than the same money spent on somebody's drive.

The rest of the page is the detail: the rate bands with sources, what moves a quote here, how session length changes the per-hour figure, how hourly, block and monthly billing actually behave, why the cheapest hour is frequently the dearest per mark recovered, what a free trial should settle before money moves, and who is legally permitted to charge for lessons in the UAE at all. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Two examined routes and one continuation route matter to an Umm Al Quwain family paying for IGCSE support, and the differences change what an hour should cost and contain.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Two-year courses examined by external papers in a June series and a November series, with syllabuses identified by four-digit codes such as 0580 mathematics and 0625 physics. Many subjects are tiered Core or Extended, and the tier caps the achievable grade. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that the correct zone timetable must be used.

Umm Al Quwain students usually sit papers at a centre in another emirate, because their school is in another emirate. That changes exam-day logistics and it also means the entry decisions, including tier, are made by a school the family travels to rather than one down the road. Confirm both in writing early.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

The other main international route, with codes such as 4MA1 for mathematics and examinations in May or June and in November. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

Families who change campus between emirates sometimes change board mid-course, which is a technique job rather than a restart. It does, however, change the price of support: a term of transition work on paper structure and formula provision is a defined block with a defined cost rather than an open commitment.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma and International A Level

The two routes an IGCSE student continues into at sixteen, both of which price above IGCSE in every published rate table. Specialist IB and IGCSE tutoring is advertised at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, so the cost of support rises at exactly the point family budgets are already stretched by sixth-form fees.

The Core or Extended decision taken in Year 10 reaches into this stage, and so does its cost. Moving a student up a tier in Year 10 is a planned block of Extended-only content; discovering in Year 12 that the foundation is not there is the expensive version of the same problem.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Rates vary by subject more than families expect, because the pool of tutors varies. The subjects below are the ones Umm Al Quwain households ask about, with a note on why each prices where it does.

Mathematics (0580 and 4MA1)

Core and Extended, or tiered by board

The most commonly requested subject and therefore the most competitively priced, sitting at the lower end of the qualified-tutor band. Extended-tier work draws on a smaller pool and prices above Core. Marks go missing in multi-step questions with no working shown and in algebra under time pressure.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Single tier

Taken alongside mathematics by students heading for a mathematics-heavy sixth form. The pool of tutors covering it in the northern emirates is thin, so it reliably prices above standard mathematics regardless of format. Sequencing matters: secure algebra from the main syllabus first.

Physics (0625 and 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Prices in the middle of the specialist band because the pool is narrower than mathematics. Students lose marks describing rather than explaining, and computing a graph gradient without interpreting it. Equation rearrangement under time is technique, and technique blocks are the cheapest effective purchase here.

Chemistry (0620)

Core and Extended

Mole arithmetic with units carried correctly is the highest-value repair available and it is short work. Extended-only electrolysis, stoichiometry and organic content is where a Core-prepared student stalls, which makes a late tier change an expensive decision rather than a free one.

Biology (0610)

Core and Extended

Content-heavy and vocabulary-precise, so a cheap generalist hour often produces less movement here than in mathematics. Data questions reward reading the axes before writing, and command-term discipline decides more of the grade than recall does. Both are trainable in a short block.

English as a First Language (0500)

Single tier

Widely covered, so competitively priced, and the summary question is the most teachable high-value component on the paper. Marks are lost by copying rather than compressing. A student at a grade 5 or 6 frequently recovers marks faster here than in any science subject.

English as a Second Language

Core and Extended

Pricing varies most in this subject because the pool is wide and the quality range is wider. Ask what a prospective tutor has actually taught to the specific paper, because general English conversation practice and examined second-language technique are different products at similar prices.

Economics (0455) and Business Studies (0450)

Single tier

Thinner pools than the sciences in this part of the UAE, so rates sit above mathematics for comparable experience. Diagram accuracy and applied judgement carry the marks; describing a business or restating both sides of an argument does not, and that distinction is quick to teach.

Computer Science (0478)

Single tier

Prices above average because fewer tutors teach the board's own pseudocode conventions rather than a programming language. Trace tables and data representation are predictable marks. A tutor fluent in Python who has never read the specification's pseudocode rules is a poor purchase at any rate.

Arabic and the mandatory UAE subjects

Separate provision by stream

Private schools must provide Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside the licensed curriculum, with separate provision for Arabic speakers and non-Arabic speakers. Support priced for first-language Arabic is wasted on a student placed in an acquisition stream, so confirm the stream in writing first.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, priced differently and suited to different problems. All three run over live video with a shared screen and a document both sides can write on.

Weekly one-to-one, sixty minutes

The default and the one most families should start with. One subject, one named tutor, the same slot weekly, following the school's scheme of work. Priced per session with no travel component, which is the entire reason the figure sits below in-home rates.

  • No travel inside the rate, because nobody travels
  • Same tutor weekly, so the diagnosis carries forward
  • Written note after each session naming what was covered
  • The slot moves rather than lapses when school timing changes

Ninety-minute sessions, fortnightly or weekly

Lower cost per teaching minute than a forty-five minute slot, because the fixed preparation is spread over more teaching. Suits a student who can concentrate that long and who is working through whole papers rather than single topics.

  • Cheaper per teaching minute than short sessions
  • Fits whole-paper practice with marking inside the session
  • Wrong for a student whose attention goes at fifty minutes
  • Often the right shape for a technique block before a series

Defined block before a series

Six to ten sessions with a stated target and a finish date, quoted as a block so the total is known before it starts. The alternative to an open-ended weekly arrangement that nobody ever reviews, and the shape we recommend for most Year 11 requests.

  • Total cost known at the start, not accumulated
  • Target named in marks or in a component
  • Halfway checkpoint with the student's own marked work
  • Ends on the date agreed, with a written verdict

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Umm Al Quwain

01

The market in dirhams, and what sits inside the hour

Here is the published market, band by band, with the source of each figure. Budget online tutoring and university-student tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour: EdFlik publishes from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors working online sit roughly AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. In-home one-to-one, travel inside the number, runs roughly AED 180 to AED 500, with Bestimate's 2026 rate table giving 180 to 350 and visiting home tutors advertised to 500. IGCSE and IB specialists run AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. Premium named tutors are advertised higher, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

Monthly shapes also exist in the market: packages of around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four in-home two-hour sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist examination-year support. Every one of those figures belongs to the provider named. None of them is an IB Gram price list.

What matters as much as the number is what the number includes, and this is where comparison breaks down in practice. Two quotes at AED 200 can differ substantially: one covers sixty minutes of teaching and nothing else, the other covers the session plus marking a paper the student submits between sessions, a written note to the parent, and the tutor reading the school's scheme of work. Ask what is inside the hour before comparing hours.

Our own position, stated plainly rather than buried: we start with a free trial lesson taught by the tutor who would take the course, with no card required and no condition attached, and we quote a plan after it. The reason is not coyness. The number of sessions a student needs depends on whether the lost marks are content, technique or timing, and that cannot be known before someone has read a marked script. Quoting first and diagnosing later is how families end up abandoning a plan halfway.

02

The travel premium from Umm Al Quwain, costed rather than asserted

This emirate pays the clearest travel premium in the country, and the arithmetic is worth doing once properly. An Umm Al Quwain household has no large international-school estate on its doorstep, so a tutor with IGCSE experience is almost certainly living in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah. From Al Nahda or Muwaileh to Al Salamah is a meaningful drive, and from either to Falaj Al Mualla is a long one. Add the return journey and a sixty-minute lesson consumes most of a working evening.

Nobody absorbs that for free, and nobody should be expected to. A tutor committing two and a half to three hours to deliver one hour of teaching has to price the whole commitment, which is why the in-home band in every published table sits above the online band for comparable experience. The number is not a mark-up for quality; it is a payment for road.

The honest way to compare the two is cost per teaching minute, and the exercise reframes the decision immediately. At AED 350 an hour in-home, a family spending AED 1,400 a month buys four hours of teaching. At AED 220 an hour online, the same AED 1,400 buys six hours and a bit. The question is then whether two additional teaching hours a month are worth less to this student than having an adult physically present. For some students they are, and that is a legitimate answer.

A third option exists and deserves honest treatment: a group class at a centre in Ajman or Sharjah. Per hour it is the cheapest of the three, and for a student who needs routine and company it can do real work. The costs people forget are the drive there and back, which lands on the family rather than the tutor, and the fact that a class of eight from four different schools teaches a syllabus rather than this student's marked script. For a Year 11 three months from a series with a specific pattern of lost marks, that is the wrong product at any price.

03

Six things that move a quote here, and three that do not

  • Confirm the tier before asking for a quote; it changes the pool
  • Book in the autumn term, not in February or October
  • Ask what is inside the hour before comparing two hourly figures
  • A block quoted as a block also forces a halfway review
  • Two children on different boards is close to double, not half

Families often assume the rate is a fixed property of a tutor. It is not; it responds to six things, and knowing them lets you change the number rather than just accept it. The tier is first and least expected: Extended-tier work in a tiered subject draws on a smaller pool than Core work and prices above it. Subject scarcity is second, and in the northern emirates Additional Mathematics 0606, computer science and economics all sit above mathematics for comparable experience.

Third is proximity to a series. Demand concentrates from February and again from October, and the same hour costs more and is harder to book in those windows than in September. Starting in the autumn term is the single cheapest decision available to a family. Fourth is session length, which changes the figure in both directions: ninety minutes usually costs less per teaching minute than forty-five, because fixed preparation spreads further.

Fifth is what is included. A quote covering teaching only is not comparable to one covering teaching plus marking a submitted paper, a written parent note and reading the school's scheme of work. Sixth is commitment shape: a block of eight quoted as a block is frequently priced differently from eight sessions bought one at a time, and the block also forces a review that an open arrangement never gets.

Three things do not move the number as much as parents expect. The student's current grade does not, because a 3 and a 6 both take an hour to teach even though they need different plans. Having two children does not halve it, particularly where they sit different boards, because Cambridge and Pearson preparation genuinely differ. And geography within this emirate does not affect an online rate at all, which is the whole point: a family in Falaj Al Mualla pays the same as one in Al Haditha, which is not true of any in-home arrangement.

04

Session length economics: forty-five, sixty and ninety minutes

Session length is the lever families use least and that changes value most, partly because the published rate is almost always quoted per hour regardless of how the hour is actually sold. The underlying economics are simple. Every session carries fixed costs that do not scale with length: reading what the student submitted, planning the session, writing the note afterwards. Spread across ninety minutes those costs are proportionally smaller than across forty-five.

That does not make ninety minutes the right answer. A fourteen-year-old working on algebra at the end of a day that started with a bus to Sharjah at half past six has a concentration limit, and teaching past it is paying for nothing. Forty-five minutes of engaged work beats ninety minutes of which the last thirty are endured. The right length is the longest one the student can actually hold, which a trial lesson establishes better than a conversation does.

Length also has to match the task. Single-topic repair works well in forty-five minutes. Whole-paper practice does not fit at all: a Paper 4 takes most of an hour to sit, so a session that includes sitting it, marking it against the scheme and discussing the pattern needs ninety. Technique blocks before a series are therefore usually ninety-minute shapes, while mid-year content support is usually sixty.

The pattern that works for most Umm Al Quwain households, given the commute, is a sixty-minute weekday session plus a ninety-minute weekend session in the term before a series, rather than two weekday sessions. The weekday slot keeps momentum and the weekend slot carries the full-paper work the evening cannot hold. It also respects the thing a week audit always reveals here: there are fewer usable weekday evening hours than anyone plans for.

SESSION LENGTH AGAINST COST PER TEACHING MINUTE AND FIT
LengthRelative cost per teaching minuteWhat it fitsWhen it is the wrong choice
45 minutesHighest, because fixed costs spread leastSingle-topic repair; younger students; short attentionWhole-paper practice, which cannot fit
60 minutesMiddleWeekly content support following the school's schemeSitting and marking a full paper in the same session
90 minutesLowestFull papers sat, marked and analysed in one sessionA student whose concentration ends at fifty minutes
60 weekday plus 90 at the weekendLowest overall for the hours deliveredThe term before a series, with a long commuteEarlier in the course, where it is more than needed
05

Hourly, block or monthly: how each billing shape behaves

The three ways tutoring is sold produce different behaviour, and the behaviour matters more than the headline figure. Pay-as-you-go hourly is the most flexible and the least likely to produce a result, because nothing forces anyone to ask whether it is working. Weeks accumulate, the total is never visible in one place, and a family discovers in March that they have spent more than a block would have cost without a single review.

A block of a defined number of sessions with a stated target and finish date is the shape we recommend for nearly every Year 11 request. The total is known before it starts. There is a halfway checkpoint with the student's own marked work in front of everyone. And it ends, which means somebody has to decide whether to continue. That forced decision is the feature, not an inconvenience.

Monthly packages are common in the market and they work well where they are honest about two things: what happens to unused sessions, and what notice ends the arrangement. Packages seen in the market run around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four in-home two-hour sessions. Ask both questions before paying. A package that forfeits unused sessions across a Ramadan month or an exam-leave fortnight costs more than the headline implies.

Two more questions belong in any pricing conversation and they are rarely asked. First, whether the quoted dirham figure includes value added tax: we will not state the UAE tax treatment of tuition as fact without a Federal Tax Authority citation, so the right question is simply whether the number you were given is the number you pay. Second, the cancellation and rescheduling terms, which matter far more here than in Dubai because the school run from this emirate is long enough that lessons genuinely do need moving.

06

Why the cheapest hour is often the dearest per mark

  • Budget hours suit supervision and routine, not diagnosis
  • Ask for sessions, target and halfway evidence before paying anything
  • Twenty undiagnosed cheap hours cost more than eight diagnosed ones
  • Premium rates buy an individual, not additional service

The cheapest band in the market is real and it is sometimes the right purchase. A capable student who needs company, routine and somebody to check that work is done can be well served at the budget end, and spending four times as much on a specialist would be waste. The error is using a budget hour for a diagnostic problem, which is where almost all wasted tutoring spend in this market goes.

The arithmetic is unforgiving. A student losing eighteen marks on Paper 4, of which twelve are going to command words and timing, needs somebody who can read the script, name the pattern and drill the shape of the answer. That is six to ten sessions and the marks come back. The same student with a tutor working through the textbook from chapter one gets a pleasant twenty sessions, no script analysis and the same eighteen marks lost in the series. At AED 100 an hour that is AED 2,000 for nothing; at AED 250 an hour the effective version is AED 2,000 for the marks.

So the metric worth using is cost per mark recovered, not cost per hour, and it can be estimated honestly before committing. Ask a prospective tutor: how many sessions, what is the target in marks or in a named component, and what evidence will exist at the halfway point. A tutor who answers all three precisely has done the diagnosis you are paying for. One who cannot has not looked at the script.

There is a related trap at the other end. Premium rates are advertised up to AED 650 an hour, and at that level the premium is the individual rather than extra service. For a student at a grade 6 needing the last marks in one component, a small number of hours with the right person can be worth it. For a student with two years of missing algebra, it is the most expensive possible way to do work that patience and sequencing would do better. Match the tier of spend to the problem, not to the anxiety.

07

What a free trial should settle before any money moves

A trial lesson is worth something only if it answers questions. Ours is free, requires no card and carries no condition, and it is taught by the tutor who would take the course rather than by a salesperson. The point is diagnosis: by the end, somebody should be able to say what the lost marks are going to and roughly how many sessions it takes to get them back.

Four things a trial should establish, and they are worth asking for explicitly whoever you trial with. Whether the tutor has read the student's marked script and can name the pattern in it. Whether the student can work in this format, which for live video means writing on a shared document and talking while being watched. What the target is, stated in marks or in a named component. And how many sessions, with a halfway checkpoint.

Two things a trial should not do. It should not require payment details to begin, because a free offer with a condition attached is not free and the condition belongs on the same screen as the word. And it should not end with a recommendation to buy regardless of what the lesson showed. Sometimes the honest outcome is that a group class in Ajman would serve this student better, that the school's own support sessions have not been used yet, or that the student needs sleep and triage more than teaching.

On data, because lead forms for school-age children collect sensitive information: we ask for what is needed to match a tutor and nothing more, we state why, and personal data can be deleted on request. The UAE's personal data protection framework under Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 sits behind that, and a privacy link belongs on every page that asks a parent for anything. No child's school report, grades and photograph should ever be collected by anybody without a stated purpose.

08

Who may legally charge for lessons, and what a legitimate arrangement looks like

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and this is the part of pricing nobody advertises. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. The permit is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

Two consequences follow for a parent comparing quotes. First, the permit costs the tutor nothing, so a rate justified by licensing fees is justified by something that does not exist. Second, individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount should be quoted by anybody, including by us. The official application route is MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, which lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

There is a related boundary worth knowing. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct has been reported as also barring serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Treat that as press-reported and check the current policy document, but never pursue an arrangement marketed as your child's own teacher, privately. For an Umm Al Quwain family whose child attends school in another emirate, this is a live question rather than a theoretical one.

A legitimate arrangement therefore looks like this: a tutor who can confirm they hold the permit, a clear statement of what the quoted dirham figure covers and whether it is the figure you pay, written cancellation and rescheduling terms, and no claim of regulator approval. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, any emirate regulator, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and operates no UAE office or centre. Any page implying otherwise is making a claim worth checking before money moves.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Umm Al Quwain

Where a family lives in Umm Al Quwain changes the commute and therefore the evening window, and for anyone considering a visiting tutor it changes the travel premium directly.

UAQ Marina

Coastal residential area with a long daily run to Sharjah or Ajman campuses. A visiting tutor would be driving in from another emirate, which is the clearest case in the country for comparing formats on cost per teaching minute rather than per hour.

Al Salamah

One of the more established residential districts, close to the main road south. Students here get home earlier than those further inland, so a 17:30 session is realistic and the usable weekday window is genuinely longer.

Al Raas

Older central district with a mix of households and shorter internal journeys. The constraint here is a quiet room in a full house rather than travel, which argues for a later slot rather than a longer one.

Al Riqqa

Residential area where several families run two or three children through one evening. Two sequential forty-five minute sessions usually works out cheaper and more effective than one ninety-minute session split between siblings.

Al Haditha and the old town

Central and compact, with the shortest journeys in the emirate. Families here often compare a group class in Ajman against one-to-one online, and the comparison turns on the drive rather than on the hourly figure.

Al Humrah

Residential and industrial mix towards the Sharjah boundary. The school run out and back is long, so a 18:00 or later start is the one that survives a full term, and a tutor requiring an adult present at the door rarely fits.

Falaj Al Mualla

The inland exclave, a substantial drive from the coast. In-home tutoring from another emirate is impractical here at any sensible price, which makes live video not a preference but the only workable one-to-one format.

Al Salam City

Newer residential development with growing school-age numbers and long commutes in both directions. Weekend mornings carry the heavier work for students here and weekday sessions stay short by necessity.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Umm Al Quwain

The Sharjah run: Muwaileh, University City and Al Nahda

Where most internationally schooled Umm Al Quwain students actually attend. A tutor driving to the family instead would be covering the same road the school bus does, which is exactly the cost the online format removes.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • The American School of Creative Science, Sharjah
  • Delhi Private School Sharjah
  • GEMS Westminster School, Sharjah
  • Our Own English High School, Sharjah

The Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah run

The northern alternative for families closer to the emirate boundary. Journey times are shorter than the Sharjah run but the same economics apply to anyone proposing to attend in person.

  • Ajman Academy
  • Habitat School Ajman
  • RAK Academy - British School Al Hamra
  • RAK English Speaking School

Schools are named as context for where Umm Al Quwain students actually attend; no affiliation, partnership or endorsement is implied or claimed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the board, code and tier first

Ask the school for a statement of entry listing the board and syllabus code for each subject, and confirm in writing whether the entry is Core or Extended where the subject is tiered. Both change the price, because Extended-tier work draws on a smaller pool of tutors than Core work does.

  2. 02

    Send one marked script

A recent marked past paper or mock script is the document that determines how many sessions you need, and therefore the total cost. It separates lost marks that are content from those that are command words, working or timing, and the second group recovers in weeks rather than terms.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, no card required

Taught by the tutor who would take the course, with no condition attached. By the end you should have the pattern in the script named, the target stated in marks or a component, an estimated number of sessions, and confirmation that the student can actually work in this format.

  4. 04

Quote as a block, with the total visible

We quote a defined block with a stated target and finish date rather than an open hourly arrangement, so the total is known before anything starts. The halfway checkpoint uses the student's own marked work, and the block ends on the agreed date with a written verdict.

  5. 05

Settle the practical terms in writing

What the dirham figure covers, whether it is the figure you pay, the rescheduling and cancellation terms, and what happens to a session missed because the school run ran late. Those matter more from this emirate than from Dubai, because the commute genuinely does force lessons to move.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Rates in dirhams, with sources named

Every band on this page carries the competitor or rate table it came from and the date of that source. Three of six researched competitors publish no price at all and the two that do quote in US dollars, which is not the currency an Umm Al Quwain family transacts in.

The travel premium costed, not hidden

A visiting tutor reaching this emirate drives in from Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah and commits close to three hours to deliver one. That is inside every in-home rate whether itemised or not, and comparing formats on cost per teaching minute makes the difference visible.

Quoted after a diagnosis, not before

The number of sessions depends on whether lost marks are content, technique or timing, which cannot be known until somebody has read a marked script. Quoting first and diagnosing later is how plans get abandoned halfway, so the free trial comes before any figure.

Blocks with a visible total

Work is quoted as a defined block with a target and a finish date, so the total is known at the start and somebody has to decide at the end whether to continue. An open hourly arrangement never produces that decision, which is why it usually costs more for less.

Permit and tax questions answered honestly

The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge for two years, so no rate is justified by licensing fees. No fine amount is quoted here because none is published. And we will not state the UAE tax treatment of tuition without a Federal Tax Authority citation.

No regulator claims, no invented statistics

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, any emirate regulator, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, operates no UAE office, and publishes no satisfaction or success figure without the underlying data behind it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Al Quwain: your questions answered

Why is online IGCSE tuition cheaper than a tutor coming to our house in Umm Al Quwain?+

Because nobody drives. This emirate has no large international-school estate, so an experienced IGCSE tutor almost certainly lives in Sharjah, Ajman or Ras Al Khaimah. Reaching Al Salamah or UAQ Marina and going home again can take close to two hours on top of the lesson, and no one absorbs that unpaid. Published tables reflect it: Bestimate's 2026 figures put in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 with visiting tutors advertised to 500, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. The premium buys road, not teaching.

What should AED 1,400 a month actually buy in this emirate?+

It depends entirely on format, and the comparison is worth doing in teaching hours rather than in sessions. At an in-home market rate of around AED 350 an hour, AED 1,400 buys roughly four hours of teaching. At an online rate of around AED 220 an hour it buys six hours and a bit. A group class at a centre in Ajman buys more hours still, with attention shared and the drive landing on you twice per session. The honest question is whether two extra teaching hours a month matter less to this student than having an adult in the room.

Does the Core or Extended tier change what we pay for a tutor?+

Yes, and families rarely anticipate it. Extended-tier work in a tiered Cambridge subject draws on a smaller pool of tutors than Core work, so it sits higher in the band for comparable experience. The same applies to scarce subjects: in the northern emirates Additional Mathematics 0606, computer science and economics all price above mathematics. Confirm the tier in writing with the school before asking for a quote, because a request for Extended support is a different market from a request for Core support in the same named subject.

Is it cheaper to book ninety minutes or two forty-five minute sessions?+

Ninety minutes is usually cheaper per teaching minute, because the fixed costs of a session, reading what was submitted, planning and writing the note afterwards, spread over more teaching time. That does not make it the right choice. A student who concentrates for fifty minutes gains nothing from the last forty, so the right length is the longest one they can genuinely hold. Whole-paper practice needs ninety, because sitting a Paper 4, marking it against the scheme and discussing the pattern does not fit into sixty.

When in the year is tutoring cheapest to book from Umm Al Quwain?+

The autumn term, and it is the most underused decision in this market. Demand concentrates from February ahead of the summer series and again from October ahead of the November series, which raises rates and reduces availability in exactly the weeks families usually start looking. Booking in September or early October costs less for the same hour and buys a longer runway, which matters because content gaps need months while technique problems need weeks. The commute from this emirate also makes earlier, calmer weeks genuinely easier to schedule.

Do private tutors in the UAE pay for a licence, and does that affect the rate?+

No, and that is worth knowing before accepting a rate justified by licensing costs. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time. A tutor without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no schedule of amounts is published.

What should I ask about a monthly package before paying for it?+

Two questions, both of which change the real cost. What happens to unused sessions, and what notice ends the arrangement. Market packages run around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four in-home two-hour sessions. A package that forfeits unused sessions will cost more than the headline when a Ramadan month, an exam-leave fortnight or a family trip removes weeks. Also ask whether the quoted dirham figure is the figure you actually pay, rather than relying on anyone's statement about tax treatment.

Is a cheap tutor ever the right purchase for an IGCSE student?+

Yes, for a specific problem. A capable student who needs routine, company and somebody checking that work is actually done can be well served at the budget end of the market, and paying four times as much would be waste. The error is using a budget hour for a diagnostic problem. A student losing marks to command words and timing needs someone who can read the script, name the pattern and drill the answer shape. Twenty undiagnosed cheap hours cost more in total than eight diagnosed ones and recover fewer marks.

How do I compare two quotes that are both AED 200 an hour?+

Ask what is inside the hour, because the two are frequently not the same product. One may cover sixty minutes of teaching and nothing else. The other may cover the session plus marking a paper the student submits between sessions, a written note to the parent, and the tutor reading your school's scheme of work. Then ask the three questions that matter more than the rate: how many sessions, what is the target in marks or a named component, and what evidence will exist at the halfway point.

Will a tutor travel to Falaj Al Mualla or UAQ Marina if we pay the premium?+

Not through IB Gram. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India. For Falaj Al Mualla in particular the arithmetic defeats in-home tutoring at any sensible price, because the drive from the emirates where IGCSE tutors actually live is long in both directions. Lessons run one-to-one over live video with a shared screen and a document both sides write on, which suits examination work because the paper, the mark scheme and the student's own answer sit on screen together.

We have two children on different boards. Does that halve the cost per child?+

No, and expecting it to is a common planning error. Cambridge and Pearson preparation genuinely differ in paper structure, command-word wording, tiering arrangements and what the formula provision gives the candidate, so the sessions are not interchangeable. Two children on the same board and in the same year can sometimes share a session productively, though attention is then split. The arrangement that usually works from this emirate is two sequential forty-five minute slots in one evening, which keeps the attention undivided and the evening intact.

Which authority oversees schooling in Umm Al Quwain, and does it affect tutoring costs?+

The federal Ministry of Education, which the national portal describes as playing a pivotal role in supervising private schools in the emirates of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Dubai has the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Abu Dhabi the Department of Education and Knowledge, Sharjah its own Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge. It does not change tutoring rates directly. It does mean there is no emirate-level inspection portal here, so judging a school's provision relies more on asking the school directly.

Does the price include value added tax?+

Ask whoever is quoting, and insist on a straight answer rather than an explanation. We will not state the UAE tax treatment of tuition fees as fact on a page like this without a Federal Tax Authority citation, because a wrong tax statement repeated across many pages is a real liability. The practical question for a parent is narrow and answerable: is the dirham figure I have been given the figure I pay, and will the invoice show it that way. Get that in writing alongside the cancellation and rescheduling terms.

What does a free trial lesson have to deliver to be worth taking?+

Four things. The tutor should have read the student's marked script and be able to name the pattern in it. The student should demonstrate they can work in the format, which for live video means writing on a shared document and talking while being watched. There should be a target stated in marks or in a named component. And there should be an estimated number of sessions with a halfway checkpoint. It should also require no card and carry no condition, and it should be willing to conclude that you do not need to buy.

What happens if nobody is available for the subject at the price we can afford?+

You get told plainly rather than sold something adjacent. The thin requests in the northern emirates are Additional Mathematics 0606, computer science and Extended-tier sciences close to a series. Where we cannot match well at a workable figure we will say so, name a date if availability changes, or point you towards a group class or the school's own support sessions, which families routinely leave unused while paying for hours. No competitor in the researched set publishes a coverage limit, and concealing one costs weeks before a fixed exam date.

Price the plan, not the hour

The number that matters from Umm Al Quwain is not the hourly rate; it is the total cost of the number of sessions this student actually needs, and that cannot be known until somebody has read a marked script. Get the board, code and tier from the school in writing, send a recent marked paper, and take the free trial lesson with the tutor who would teach the course. You will get the pattern in the script named, a target in marks, an estimated session count and a block quoted with the total visible before it starts. If a group class or the school's own support would do more for less, that is what the written opinion will say.
