IB and IGCSE tutors for Muwaileh families

IB and IGCSE tutors in Muwaileh work in the emirate's densest school district, and the problem here is rarely a bad school. It is that roughly half of an IGCSE or Diploma course is work the student does alone: past papers nobody has time to mark, internal assessment drafted outside lessons, revision that was never taught as a skill. Lessons run one-to-one over live video and target exactly that half.

  • Built around internal assessment and past papers, not re-teaching
  • Criterion letters and mark allocations explained, not summarised
  • Tier and syllabus code confirmed before the first session
  • Tutors review the student's own work and never supply text

IB & IGCSE in Muwaileh

Why a good school is not the whole course

Muwaileh holds more international school capacity than any other district in Sharjah. Families move here deliberately for it, and the schools are generally well staffed and properly run. That is why the tutoring question in this neighbourhood is different from the one in the older coastal districts: parents here are rarely trying to compensate for poor teaching. They are discovering that good teaching covers less of the course than they assumed.

Work out the arithmetic. A Cambridge IGCSE subject gets perhaps four or five lessons a fortnight across two years. In that time a teacher has to deliver a syllabus, run practicals, set and mark assessments for a class of twenty or more, and prepare a cohort for papers written in a language of command verbs. What that timetable cannot contain is a student sitting a whole past paper under timed conditions every week for eight weeks and having each one marked individually with feedback by question type.

In the Diploma the gap is wider and more consequential, because a fifth of each subject grade comes from internally assessed work the student produces largely outside lessons. A teacher supervising thirty internal assessments can give a research question a few minutes of attention. A badly chosen research question costs marks in every criterion and cannot be rescued once the data is collected, and that is the single most common Diploma failure in this district.

There is a third, quieter gap: revision as a technique. Almost nobody is taught how to revise. Students reread notes, feel productive, and score the same mark again. Spaced retrieval, working from the mark scheme backwards, and writing answers under time pressure are learnable skills, and they belong to neither the school's timetable nor a parent's expertise.

None of this is a criticism of the schools in this district, and a page that implied otherwise would be dishonest as well as unhelpful. A teacher with a class of twenty-four and a two-year syllabus is doing the job the timetable allows. The gap is structural: it exists in Muwaileh, in Dubai, in London and in Singapore, and it is why tutoring in a well-schooled district is a supplement to good teaching rather than a substitute for bad teaching.

IB Gram addresses those three gaps with one-to-one lessons over live video. IB Gram does not visit homes in the UAE, and in-home tutoring is a service run only in India. For Muwaileh that matters less for traffic than for match quality: the point of a tutor here is not another lesson on the same content, it is a specialist in the exact board, level and component where the independent work is going wrong, and that specialist does not have to live down the road.

At a glance

  • Class time delivers content; marked timed practice mostly happens outside it
  • A fifth of each Diploma subject grade is internally assessed work
  • A research question chosen badly cannot be fixed after data collection
  • Core and Extended tier choices fix the grade ceiling before Year 11
  • Revision technique is learnable and is taught almost nowhere
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three programmes dominate enquiries from Muwaileh addresses. Each entry below names the part of the course that happens outside the classroom, because that is what tutoring in this district is actually for.

DPAges 16-19 - Years 12 and 13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three normally at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Each subject carries an internally assessed component contributing roughly a fifth of the grade, marked by the teacher against published criteria and externally moderated. Core components can add up to three points and can also prevent a diploma being awarded.

Diploma students in Muwaileh have good classroom provision and almost no supervised time for internal assessment drafting. The work is produced at home across months with a handful of supervisor meetings, which is why the sessions that change a Diploma grade in this district are the early ones on question design rather than the late ones on content.

IGCSEAges 14-16 - Years 10 and 11

Cambridge International IGCSE

Assessed by syllabus code, with Core and Extended tiers in sciences and maths that cap the attainable grade. Cambridge runs June and November series for IGCSE, O Level and International A Level. Each centre is allocated to one of six administrative timetable zones, and the school's own zone timetable is the one that applies.

Tier is the decision Muwaileh parents hear about last and should hear about first. A Core entry caps the grade regardless of how well the candidate performs, and the entry closes months before the papers. Candidates here sit the June series, with November as the resit route, and the centre lodges final entries a long way ahead of the June papers - the exact date sits on the statement of entry rather than in a brochure, so ask the exams officer for it.

EDEXCELAges 14-16 - Years 10 and 11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Graded 9 to 1, available in May or June and in November, with formula provision and paper structures that differ from the Cambridge equivalent in the same subject. Some qualifications are modular, which changes when revision has to peak and when a resit is possible.

Pearson published a November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026, and released June 2026 results to centres on 19 August and to students on 20 August 2026. Provisional timetables are revised, so a Muwaileh family should work from the live PDF on qualifications.pearson.com rather than any date copied onto a tutoring page.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects requested most often from Muwaileh, described by the component where independent work decides the grade. Availability depends on board and level rather than on location, because lessons are delivered over video.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

DP HL and SL

The internal exploration is marked against five criteria worth twenty marks in total, and most lost marks sit in reflection and personal engagement rather than in the mathematics itself. Higher Level Paper 3 needs extended unseen problem solving that no class drill reproduces.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

DP HL and SL

Calculator-permitted throughout, which hides the real demand: interpreting a result in the context of the situation modelled. A correct number with no statement of what it means for the scenario earns little, and that habit is corrected in practice rather than in lessons.

Chemistry

DP HL and SL

The scientific investigation is assessed on four criteria worth twenty-four marks, and a research question that cannot generate a usable spread of data sinks all four. Energetics and organic mechanisms carry the Higher Level teaching load.

Physics

DP HL and SL

Fields and circular motion defeat capable students because algebra and physical reasoning must run together. Paper 1 rewards recognising which relationship applies, which is a pattern-matching skill built through volume of practice.

Biology

DP HL and SL

A long syllabus where marks are lost to imprecise language rather than ignorance. The investigation criteria reward a controlled design and an honest evaluation of limitations, both of which are planning skills rather than content knowledge.

Economics

DP HL and SL

The internal assessment is a portfolio of three commentaries based on published news articles, each with its own word limit and each requiring diagrams drawn correctly. Candidates lose marks for articles chosen badly and for evaluation that lists rather than judges.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Extended candidates meet functions, transformations and histograms with unequal class widths; Core candidates never see them. The tier decision sets the ceiling, and once entries close in the autumn it cannot be undone.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625

Core and Extended

The alternative-to-practical paper is the biggest source of avoidable loss: candidates describe a method without naming a control variable or justifying a repeat reading. That is a question-type skill, not a topic.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core and Extended

Mole calculations, electrolysis and the qualitative analysis tables carry the Extended difficulty. Learning the analysis tables as tables, rather than reasoning them out under time pressure, is worth several marks.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics 4MA1

Higher and Foundation

Two papers with a formula sheet supplied, which changes what must be memorised and how time is allocated. Candidates trained only on Cambridge papers lose minutes adjusting to question order and method marks.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core DP components

Together worth up to three points, each with its own word limit and internal deadlines set by the school. Support is question framing, criteria explanation and feedback on the student's own drafts; supplied prose is a malpractice risk, not a shortcut.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three teaching patterns answer the independent-work problem, and they are bought in a particular order. Families who start with the third usually should have started with the first.

Internal assessment supervision

A short series of sessions early in a Diploma course, built entirely around the assessed component: question design, feasibility of the data, criteria interpretation and feedback on the student's own drafts. Cheap, early and the highest-return work available in this district.

  • Research question interrogated until it is answerable with available data
  • Each criterion explained against the student's own draft
  • Referencing and data presentation taught properly
  • No text, data or analysis supplied by the tutor

Marked past-paper cycles

Whole papers sat to time, marked against the published scheme, then analysed by question type rather than by topic. This is the work class timetables cannot absorb, and it is where most of the recoverable marks in an examined course are sitting.

  • One full paper per cycle, timed and unaided
  • Marking against the official scheme, with the mark breakdown shown
  • Errors grouped by command verb and question type
  • A short re-teach of only the topics the errors expose

Revision technique coaching

A small number of sessions that teach the student how to study rather than teaching the subject: retrieval practice, working backwards from a mark scheme, timing a paper, and knowing when rereading has stopped producing anything.

  • Spaced retrieval set up across the subjects the student actually sits
  • Mark schemes read as instructions rather than answers
  • A weekly plan the student maintains themselves
  • Reviewed once against a real school assessment

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Muwaileh

01

What class time covers, and what it hands back to the student

Start with an honest division of labour. A well-run Muwaileh school delivers content, demonstrates method, runs practicals, sets periodic assessments and gives whole-class feedback. That is a substantial amount, and it is not the whole course. The remainder is produced by the student outside the classroom, and the quality of that remainder is what separates a 5 from a 7.

The components that sit mostly outside class time are predictable. Timed practice on whole papers, with individual marking, is first. Internal assessment drafting is second, and in the Diploma it is the one with a fixed weighting attached. Independent revision across a two-year syllabus is third. Learning the vocabulary of command verbs is fourth, and it is almost never taught as a topic in its own right because it belongs to no topic.

A parent can test this quickly. Ask your child how many complete past papers they have sat under timed conditions this term, and how many of those were marked individually with feedback by question. The answer in most schools, in any country, is fewer than the parent assumed, and it is not a criticism of the teacher. A class of twenty-four papers marked individually every week is not a thing a timetable contains.

That test also tells you what to buy. If the answer is zero papers, the first purchase is not more teaching. It is a marked timed-paper cycle, because the content is probably already in place and the marks are being lost in the room. The table sets out the division component by component.

02

The tier decision that sets the ceiling before Year 11 begins

In Cambridge sciences and maths, candidates are entered for Core or Extended, and the tier caps the attainable grade. It is a decision made by the school, usually during Year 10, often on the basis of a single set of results, and it is the one Muwaileh parents most often learn about after it has already been taken.

The content difference is real rather than cosmetic. Extended maths candidates meet functions, transformations and histograms with unequal class widths. Extended science candidates meet additional topics and are examined on papers with a higher difficulty profile. A Core candidate who performs perfectly is still awarded within the Core grade range, which may not satisfy a sixth-form entry requirement two years later.

The timing is the part that catches families. Cambridge sets final entries months before the June papers are sat, so the tier is settled a long way out rather than in the run-up to the exams. Once that entry is made the tier is fixed for that series. A conversation in the autumn term about moving a child from Core to Extended is a conversation worth having; the same conversation in the weeks before the papers is mostly theoretical, and the only opening left is the November series as a resit. Get the centre own entry date from the exams officer and work backwards from it rather than from the exam timetable.

What tutoring can usefully do is provide evidence. A candidate sitting Extended past papers under timed conditions, marked honestly, produces a mark that a head of department can act on. That is a more persuasive case than a parent's conviction, and it is the right use of two or three early sessions in Year 10.

Internal assessment: where class time runs out entirely

This is the component that explains most of the gap between a Muwaileh student's predicted grade and their final one. It is produced outside lessons, it carries a fixed weighting, and it is marked against published criteria that most students never read properly.

The mark allocations are worth knowing as numbers rather than as a general idea. The Diploma maths exploration is assessed against five criteria totalling twenty marks: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics, with the last carrying the largest share. The scientific investigation in biology, chemistry and physics is assessed against four criteria totalling twenty-four marks: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Economics runs a portfolio of three commentaries based on published articles. Confirm every figure against the current subject guide with your school's Diploma coordinator before planning around it.

Seeing the criteria as a mark split changes behaviour. A student who knows that reflection and personal engagement carry marks stops treating them as decoration. A student who knows that evaluation is a sixth of a science investigation writes the limitations section properly instead of in the last hour. None of this is content knowledge; it is reading the assessment instrument, and it takes one session.

The failure mode is always the same and always early. A research question is chosen in the first weeks, the student collects data for a month, and the data turns out to have no usable spread or no controllable variable. By then the deadline is close and the only option is writing up a weak investigation well. Two sessions on question design before data collection are worth ten sessions of rescue afterwards.

Word limits, deadlines and the documents that carry them

The written components of a Diploma each carry a limit, and every year candidates in every country lose marks by treating a limit as a target to exceed. Collecting the limits in one place is useful because no competing page in this market does it, and because the internal deadlines that matter most are set by the school rather than by the awarding body.

The Extended Essay is normally capped at four thousand words. The Theory of Knowledge essay and the exhibition commentary each carry their own shorter limits. Internal assessments in the sciences and mathematics carry page or word guidance rather than hard ceilings in some subjects and firm limits in others, and the economics portfolio limits each commentary individually. Every one of these should be confirmed against the current subject guide through the school, because the IB revises them and a figure copied from an old page is worse than no figure.

The deadline structure matters as much as the limit. A school sets internal dates for a first draft, a supervisor meeting, a final submission and an upload, and those dates sit months before anything external. A tutoring plan built from the awarding body's calendar will always be late; one built from the school's assessment calendar will not.

Practical consequence for a Muwaileh family: ask the school for the written internal deadline schedule at the start of the Diploma year, not in the term it bites. It is the single most useful document in the house, and tutoring sessions should be positioned relative to it rather than relative to the exam.

05

The past-paper cycle, and why volume alone does nothing

  • Sit it to time, unaided, in one sitting
  • Mark strictly against the official scheme with marks shown
  • Group errors by command verb and question type, not by topic
  • Re-teach only what the errors prove is missing

Every family in Muwaileh has heard that past papers are the answer, and most buy the wrong version of it. Working through papers without marking them against the scheme produces confidence and no improvement, because the student grades their own answer generously on the parts they half-knew.

A cycle that works has four steps. The paper is sat to time, unaided, in one sitting. It is marked against the official mark scheme, strictly, with the marks shown. The errors are then grouped by question type and command verb rather than by topic, which usually reveals that a student losing twelve marks across a paper lost nine of them on one kind of question. Only then is anything re-taught, and only the topics the errors actually expose.

That fourth step is the one families skip and the one that saves time. A student who loses marks on every explain question does not need the whole syllabus retaught; they need to be shown that an explain answer requires a mechanism and a consequence, and then made to write six of them. The repair is narrow and fast once the diagnosis is honest.

Volume matters after that, not before. Once the technique is in place, a weekly timed paper for eight weeks before a series is the highest-value thing a candidate can do, and it is almost impossible to arrange without someone to mark it. Doing one paper properly is worth more than doing four and checking the answers.

06

What to buy first, and what it costs around Muwaileh

Because the problem in this district is usually independent work rather than teaching, the spending order is different from the one families assume. The cheapest effective purchase is early and narrow; the expensive ineffective purchase is late and broad.

First on the list is internal assessment supervision in a Diploma subject, bought in the first term of the course. Three or four sessions on question design and criteria interpretation protect a fifth of the grade and cost a fraction of a year of weekly lessons. Second is a marked past-paper cycle in the weakest examined subject. Third, and only third, is weekly content teaching, which is what most families buy first.

On price, market rates read in October 2026 put qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300 an hour and IB or IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with premium examiner-experienced tutors higher. In-home visiting rates run AED 180 to 350 in Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, and independent home tutors up to AED 500, because those figures absorb travel. Monthly online packages of around eight sessions advertise from AED 799. None of these are IB Gram prices; IB Gram quotes after a consultation.

The useful comparison for a Muwaileh family is cost per recovered mark rather than cost per hour. Four sessions on a research question in September can protect more marks than twenty sessions of content teaching in April, and that is a pricing argument as much as an academic one.

Home tutoring in a school-dense district, honestly compared

  • Local supply is genuine in this district, unlike in the outer communities
  • Avoid any arrangement involving your child's own classroom teacher
  • Component specialism is a national search, not a local one
  • Bench time belongs to the school; reasoning can be taught on video

Muwaileh is unusual in the UAE in having a genuine local supply of tutors, because the schools are here and so are the teachers and the university students. A family searching for a home tutor in this district will find one, and for primary support or homework supervision that is a reasonable arrangement.

The limits show up in two places. The first is the conflict question: the closer a tutor sits to the school, the more likely it is that they are connected to it, and an arrangement in which your child's own teacher is paid privately is the one to avoid. The MoHRE private tuition permit carries a code of conduct, and in Abu Dhabi the education regulator's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. Ask rather than assume.

The second is component specialism. The work this district actually needs is internal assessment supervision and marked paper cycles in specific subjects at specific levels. A local generalist can supervise homework; they cannot usually tell a Diploma candidate that their chemistry research question has no controllable variable. That is a subject-and-level match, and the pool for it is national rather than local.

IB Gram does not visit homes in the UAE, and in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Muwaileh families are taught one-to-one over live video, with screen sharing for papers and a shared whiteboard. What video cannot do is replace laboratory bench time, and the school holds that part; a tutor teaches method, variables, uncertainty and analysis instead.

08

A diagnostic before a commitment

The starting sequence in this district should be unusually short, because the information needed is specific and mostly already in the house.

Send three documents: the statement of entry or subject list with board, code, tier and level; the most recent report; and the school's internal assessment and mock calendar. Those three answer almost every question a tutor needs to ask, and a family that arrives with them skips two weeks of discovery.

Then buy a diagnostic rather than a term. One session on a timed paper, marked strictly, tells you whether the problem is content, technique or planning. One session on an internal assessment research question tells you whether the component is on course or already compromised. Either costs one hour and determines what the next ten should be.

Read the first session note carefully, because it is the clearest signal you will get. A note that names a specific misconception, a question type where marks are going, or a prerequisite missing from two years back is a note written by someone who was paying attention. A note that reports good engagement and a positive attitude has told you nothing you can act on, and a second one like it is a reason to change tutor rather than to wait.

Finally, ask what happens if the specialist you need is not available at your hour. Scarce Higher Level subjects sometimes have nobody free in a Sharjah evening, and the honest answers are a waiting position or a tutor in a time zone that fits. A generalist described as a specialist is the answer to avoid, and the way a provider handles that question predicts how it will handle everything else.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Muwaileh

Muwaileh sits inland on the spine of the emirate, surrounded by the districts its schools draw from. Each note describes the practical relationship with Muwaileh rather than the area on its own.

University City

Immediately east, where Sharjah's higher education campuses sit. Several Muwaileh schools draw staff from there, and families with an older sibling at university often want one tutor who can cover two very different levels in a week.

Al Zahia

North-west and newer, mostly villas and townhouses. Children from Al Zahia fill several Muwaileh classrooms, which is why the two areas share mock calendars and internal assessment deadlines almost exactly.

Aljada

West towards central Sharjah, a large newer community whose school-age population is growing quickly. Journeys into Muwaileh schools are short, so Aljada children are available for an earlier evening session than coastal families.

Al Khan and Al Majaz

Thirty minutes west on the coast. Children travelling from there to a Muwaileh school lose an hour of the day to the road and cannot take a weekday slot before 6:30pm.

Muwaileh Commercial

The denser apartment part of the district, closest to the schools themselves. The short walk or drive means homework starts earlier here, which makes an early evening session genuinely workable.

Sharjah Garden City

South-east along the Al Dhaid road, villa-based and newer. Families there use Muwaileh schools heavily and face the longest commute of any group in this cluster.

Tilal City

Further out towards the interior. A Muwaileh school day plus a Tilal City commute makes Saturday morning the only realistic slot for long-form work.

School ecosystem

The Muwaileh and University City school belt

This is the densest school cluster in the emirate, regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods as well as tuition fees. Internal assessment deadlines and mock windows are set by each school, and those are the dates a tutoring plan must be built around.

Families comparing options inside the emirate usually look at these as well. Where any inspection outcome is quoted to you, ask which authority published it and in which year, and read it from the authority's own listing rather than from a school prospectus or a tutoring site.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send three documents, not a description

The subject list with board, code, tier and level; the latest report; and the school's internal assessment and mock calendar. Those three remove most of the guesswork, and the third one is the document that determines when sessions should happen.

  2. 02

    Buy one diagnostic hour

A timed paper marked strictly, or a research question interrogated properly. One hour tells you whether the problem is content, technique or planning, and those three need completely different plans and different amounts of money.

  3. 03

Fix the component, not the subject

If the marks are going on explain questions, the repair is a command-verb drill rather than a syllabus re-teach. Narrow repairs work faster and cost less, and the diagnostic is what identifies which narrow repair applies.

  4. 04

Position sessions against the school's calendar

Internal deadlines and mock windows set by the school arrive long before any external date. Sessions timed against those dates do useful work; sessions timed against the exam window arrive too late to change the drafting.

  5. 05

Review against the next real assessment

Judge the arrangement on the next school mock or unit test rather than on a number of weeks. If the mark has not moved, change one variable deliberately: the component being targeted, the frequency, or the tutor.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Aimed at the independent half of the course

The work this district needs is marked timed practice and internal assessment supervision, not a second delivery of content the school already teaches well. Sessions are built around the component where marks are actually being lost.

Criteria quoted as mark allocations

Internal assessment criteria appear here with their letters and marks rather than as a general idea, with an instruction to confirm the current figures through the school. Knowing that reflection carries three marks changes how a student writes it.

Tier and code confirmed before teaching

Core or Extended, Cambridge or Pearson, Higher or Standard Level: the first question on every enquiry. A tutor teaching the wrong tier or the wrong specification is teaching a course the candidate is not entered for.

Honest about delivery and limits

IB Gram does not visit homes in the UAE; in-home tutoring is an India-only service. Video lessons also cannot replace laboratory bench time, and both facts are stated before any payment rather than discovered later.

The student's work stays theirs

Tutors interrogate a research question, explain criteria and respond to drafts the student has written. No supplied text, no supplied data, no completed assessment at any price, because a malpractice finding costs more than any mark it could buy.

Figures sourced or absent

Every AED band here is a market figure with the kind of provider that publishes it and the month read. Entry dates come from Cambridge and Pearson publications. IB session dates are deliberately not restated, because they must be confirmed with the school first.

Student and parent reviews

What students and parents say about working with IB Gram

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Muwaileh: your questions answered

Our Muwaileh school is good. Why would we need a tutor at all?+

Because a good school and a complete course are different things. Class time delivers content, runs practicals and sets periodic assessments. What it generally cannot contain is a student sitting a whole past paper under timed conditions each week and having every one marked individually with feedback by question type, or a teacher giving thirty internal assessment research questions the hour each one deserves. Those two pieces of work carry a large share of the available marks, and they sit outside the timetable in almost every school anywhere.

How many past papers has my child actually sat under timed conditions?+

Ask them, because the answer is usually lower than parents assume and it is the most useful diagnostic question available. A paper read through at home is not a paper sat; a paper sat but self-marked is not a paper marked. If the honest answer this term is none, the first purchase is not more teaching but a marked timed cycle, because the content is probably in place and the marks are being lost in the room rather than in the knowledge.

What are the Diploma maths exploration criteria worth in marks?+

The exploration is assessed against five criteria totalling twenty marks: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics, with use of mathematics carrying the largest single share. Knowing the split matters because candidates treat reflection and personal engagement as decoration when together they carry a meaningful number of marks. Confirm the current allocations against the subject guide through your school's Diploma coordinator before planning around them, since the IB revises its guides.

How is a Diploma science investigation marked?+

Against four criteria totalling twenty-four marks: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The pattern of lost marks is consistent. Research design fails when there is no controllable independent variable. Data analysis fails when raw data is presented without processing or uncertainty. Conclusions fail when they are not supported by the data collected, and evaluations fail when limitations are listed generically rather than tied to the method used. Confirm the current criteria with your school before relying on these figures.

When should a Muwaileh Diploma student start work on their internal assessment?+

Earlier than almost anyone does. The decisive moment is choosing the research question, which happens in the first weeks of the course, and a question that cannot generate a usable spread of data cannot be rescued once the data is collected. Two or three sessions on question design before any data gathering protect a fifth of the subject grade. Families who contact a tutor at the drafting stage are usually paying more for a worse outcome than families who called in September.

Where exactly is the line between legitimate IA support and malpractice?+

Yes, and the boundary is clear. A tutor can teach the content, interrogate the research question, explain what each criterion asks for, read a draft the student has written and say where it falls short, and teach referencing and data presentation. A tutor must not supply text, data, analysis or conclusions that end up in the submission. The test is whether the school would be comfortable seeing the tutor's contribution on the page. Anyone selling a finished assessment is selling a malpractice finding.

My child was entered for Core rather than Extended. Can that be changed?+

Only before the entry deadline, which falls months ahead of the papers. Candidates in the UAE sit the Cambridge June series, the centre lodges final entries long before those papers, and the exact date is on the statement of entry - worth getting in writing rather than assuming. After that the tier is fixed for that series, and the grade ceiling with it; the next opening is the November series, taken as a resit. If you want the question reopened before the entry goes in, the useful move is evidence: have the candidate sit Extended past papers under timed conditions, marked honestly, and take that mark to the head of department.

What is the word limit on the Extended Essay?+

It is normally capped at four thousand words, and the practical risk is not the ceiling but the internal deadlines around it. Schools set their own dates for a first draft, supervisor meetings, final submission and upload, and those arrive long before anything external. Ask the school for its written internal deadline schedule at the start of the Diploma year. Confirm the current word limit through the coordinator as well, because the IB revises its guidance and a figure copied from an old page is worse than none.

Does IB Gram send tutors to homes in Muwaileh?+

No. IB Gram does not make home visits anywhere in the UAE, and in-home tutoring is a service run only in India. Muwaileh families are taught one-to-one over live video, with screen sharing for past papers and a shared whiteboard. In a district with this many schools there is a real local supply of visiting tutors, and for homework supervision that is a sensible option. For internal assessment supervision in a specific Diploma subject the match needs to be national rather than local.

Should we avoid a tutor who teaches at our own school?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct, and in Abu Dhabi the education regulator's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. Beyond the rules, it is a conflict: the person who sets and marks the assessment should not also be paid to prepare your child for it. An independent tutor gives you a second reading of where the marks are going, which is most of the value you are buying.

What does tutoring cost in this part of Sharjah?+

Market figures read in October 2026 put qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300 an hour and IB or IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with premium examiner-experienced tutors higher again. In-home visits run AED 180 to 350 in Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, and independent home tutors up to AED 500, because travel is absorbed in the rate. Monthly online packages of about eight sessions advertise from AED 799. IB Gram quotes after a consultation rather than publishing a flat rate.

Is it better to spend money in September or in April?+

September, almost always, and by a wide margin in the Diploma. Three sessions in the first term on an internal assessment research question protect a fifth of a subject grade that cannot be recovered later. Three sessions in April can only polish what already exists. In an examined IGCSE year, autumn money buys tier evidence and content repair while spring money buys technique, which is still worthwhile but narrower. The expensive mistake is buying broadly and late.

How do practical skills get taught if lessons are on video?+

Method, variables, uncertainty, graph work and analysis all teach well on screen, and that is where most practical marks are actually awarded. Cambridge alternative-to-practical papers test naming a control variable, justifying a repeat reading and identifying a systematic error, none of which need apparatus. What video cannot replace is bench time, which belongs to the school laboratory. A tutor claiming otherwise is overselling; the honest division is that the school provides the hands and the tutor the reasoning.

How many subjects should we tutor at once in an exam year?+

One or two, done properly. Exam technique improves through repetition within a single subject, so four subjects at one session each produces shallow work in all of them and consumes four evenings. The pattern that moves a grade is one subject, twice a week, almost entirely on marked papers, with the school handling the rest. Add a second subject only once the first has stabilised against a real school assessment, and expect to drop something else from the week to make room.

What if no specialist is free for a scarce Higher Level subject?+

You should be told plainly rather than offered someone adjacent. Some Higher Level subjects have no UAE-based specialist free in the Sharjah evening window, and the honest options are a waiting position until a slot opens or a tutor in another time zone whose working day covers your evening. Ask who the tutor is, what they have taught and at what level, and ask before paying. A provider that answers vaguely has told you how it will behave for the rest of the year.

Buy the half of the course that nobody else covers

Muwaileh families are generally not short of teaching. They are short of marked timed practice and of serious attention on the internally assessed work that carries a fifth of each Diploma subject grade. Send the subject list with board, code and tier, the latest report, and the school's internal deadline calendar, and the first hour can go on a diagnostic rather than a sales conversation. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, criteria figures here should be confirmed through your school, and the student writes every word of their own assessed work.
