IB Home Tutor in Maryam Island

Families looking for an IB home tutor in Maryam Island almost always ask whether the answer would be different a kilometre away in Al Khan or Al Majaz. It would not. Maryam Island is a waterfront apartment development on the Sharjah lagoon, close to the Dubai border, and the tutoring question there is identical to the one in the districts around it. IB Gram does not visit UAE homes; we match Diploma specialists and teach live, one-to-one, over video.

  • A Diploma specialist per subject and level, matched in days
  • Fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, movable within the week
  • No visit required, so apartment access and parking are irrelevant
  • Free trial lesson that ends with a written diagnosis

IB & IGCSE in Maryam Island

What changes between Maryam Island and the district next door, and what does not

Maryam Island sits on the Sharjah lagoon between Al Khan and Al Majaz, a waterfront development of apartments and promenade rather than villas and compounds. It is a particular kind of place to live, and families there often assume it is a particular kind of place to find a tutor. In practice, the only things that change between Maryam Island, Al Khan, Al Majaz and Al Taawun are the housing type, the walk to the water and the drive to the Dubai border. The tutoring arithmetic is identical in all four.

That is worth saying plainly because a lot of effort gets wasted on the assumption that it is not true. Parents ask whether a more established district would have better supply, or whether being closer to Dubai helps, or whether somebody in the building might teach the Diploma. The honest answers are no, marginally and almost certainly not. The constraint on Diploma tutoring in Sharjah is not where you live. It is how few people have taught a given Higher Level subject through two full cycles, and those people are not distributed by neighbourhood.

What the waterfront districts do share is a particular evening. A high proportion of these households have at least one parent working in Dubai, and a meaningful number send children to Dubai schools, because the border is minutes away and the school choice there is wider. That means later arrivals home, a less predictable afternoon than an inland Sharjah family faces, and an evening that has to absorb a Diploma workload on top.

They also share an apartment-living constraint that villa districts do not. A Diploma student revising in a two-bedroom apartment with younger siblings has a space problem as well as a time problem, and a tutor arriving at the door makes that worse rather than better: another adult in a small living room, with the session audible to everybody. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE at all, since home tuition is a service we offer only in India, and for apartment households that turns out to be a practical advantage rather than a compromise.

The rest of this page makes the comparison explicit. There is a table setting Maryam Island against its neighbours on the things that genuinely differ, a section on where a session can happen in an apartment, the Sharjah rate bands read from the monthly figures first, and the regulator position for a household choosing between a Sharjah and a Dubai school. If you want the pure cost argument or the term-by-term calendar version, the sibling pages for this neighbourhood take those lines. Read the rate table from the monthly column rather than the hourly one, because the monthly figure is what a household actually commits to and the hourly figure is what gets quoted.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The IB continuum reaches Sharjah waterfront families at three stages, and the comparison between neighbourhoods matters least at the top end. A PYP tutor is findable almost anywhere; a Higher Level specialist is findable almost nowhere by distance.

PYPAges 3-12 · Foundation to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led, without external examinations, assessed through units of inquiry and the Year 6 exhibition. Support here is about literacy, numeracy fluency and the working habits that make later study possible. Sessions run shorter, around forty-five minutes, because concentration rather than content is the limit.

This is the one stage where local supply genuinely is adequate across all the waterfront districts. A capable graduate tutor can support PYP numeracy well, and the budget band of roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour is a reasonable place to look. The comparison between Maryam Island and Al Khan is irrelevant at this level because the answer is yes in both.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked A to D, with a Personal Project in the final year. The criteria decide the band more than the topic does, and students who write fluently while ignoring the criterion wording settle in the middle and stay there.

Supply starts to thin here, and it thins the same way in every Sharjah district. What a Maryam Island family needs is somebody who can read a criterion strand aloud and explain the difference between the top band and the one below it. That is a specific skill, it is not common, and nobody has it because they live nearby.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, assessed by external examination and internal assessment, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service, scored to 45 points. Internal assessment carries weight in nearly every subject, so the grade is built over two years rather than decided in a fortnight.

This is where the neighbourhood comparison collapses entirely. The number of people within reach of the Sharjah waterfront who have taught Higher Level Chemistry through two cycles is small enough that distance cannot be the selection criterion. A Maryam Island family and an Al Majaz family are competing for the same handful of specialists, and both are better served by dropping the distance filter.

DP coreAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Extended Essay, TOK and internal assessment

The core is where points quietly disappear, because the deadlines are internal and therefore feel movable until they are not. The Extended Essay runs to 4,000 words on a question the student chooses; TOK is assessed by essay and exhibition. Support is process coaching rather than content teaching.

The core is also the component that most rewards a tutor the student can reach between sessions, which an apartment-based household with one shared living space usually cannot arrange in person. A tutor may discuss the question, teach the criteria and read a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write, complete or edit the work, and providers in this market who sell finished work are selling your child a malpractice finding.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The Diploma subjects Sharjah waterfront families ask about, with what the assessment actually demands. The pattern across these notes is that marks are lost to technique more often than to ignorance.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic fluency under time pressure, with proof and deeper calculus at Higher Level. The exploration is internally assessed and consistently underestimated. Students who understand the mathematics still lose marks to unjustified steps and poor presentation.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology use, with the calculator part of the assessment rather than a convenience. Check the route against university requirements before committing, because some courses expect Analysis and Approaches specifically.

Physics

HL and SL

Multiple choice, extended response and a third paper on experimental and option material. Written explanations are where marks go: a correct idea phrased loosely earns nothing. The investigation rewards one tightly controlled variable over an ambitious design.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms carry the Higher Level failure rate. Data questions require uncertainty to be handled rather than mentioned, and the investigation needs a quantitative relationship the student can plot and defend.

Biology

HL and SL

Large content volume with marks tied to exact terminology, plus data analysis that catches students who revised facts and skipped skills. Higher Level extension material arrives late and is often first met during revision.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy decides a large share of the marks and the evaluation command terms decide most of the rest. The internally assessed commentaries need real published articles, applied to theory rather than summarised.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven, with a research project at Higher Level. Application to the given organisation separates a 5 from a 7, and the quantitative tools are examinable and routinely neglected until too late.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen textual analysis, a comparative essay, the individual oral and a further essay at Higher Level. Strong bilingual students usually plateau on analytical technique rather than language: commenting on effect instead of restating content.

Psychology

HL and SL

Studies must be used as evidence rather than recounted, and the command terms draw sharp distinctions between describe, explain and evaluate. The internal assessment is a replication with strict reporting conventions that are easy marks once learned.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

A prescribed-title essay and an exhibition of three objects against a knowledge question. The component most often left too late in Sharjah schools, and the one where process coaching produces the clearest return per hour spent.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, all online, with apartment households specifically in mind. The constraint here is usually space and noise rather than only the clock.

The quiet-hour weekly session

One fixed hour a week placed when the apartment is genuinely quiet, which in many waterfront households means after a younger sibling's bedtime rather than straight after school. The slot is chosen around the household rather than the school bell, and that is often what makes it survive.

  • Time chosen for noise, not only for traffic
  • Headphones and a shared digital board, so the session does not fill the room
  • Same tutor and a tracked log of recurring errors
  • One agreed fallback day for deadline weeks

Split sessions around the core

Two shorter contacts a week during the periods when an internal assessment or the Extended Essay is in draft. Short, frequent feedback on the student's own writing works far better than one long session a fortnight, because a draft stalls between sessions rather than during them.

  • Two 45-minute slots on separate days
  • Feedback on what the student wrote since the last session
  • Especially useful in the winter term of DP1
  • Reverts to a single weekly hour once the draft is through

Examination-period intensive

A concentrated block in the weeks before the May session, built on timed questions and mark-scheme correction rather than new teaching. Appropriate when content is broadly known and marks are going to technique, timing and misread command terms.

  • Two or three sessions a week during the block
  • Each session ends with a question attempted cold
  • Paper-by-paper account of where marks were lost
  • Runs alongside the school's own revision programme, not against it

01

Maryam Island against Al Khan, Al Majaz and Al Taawun

Here is the comparison, made properly. These four districts differ in housing type, age, price and how far you are from the Dubai border. They do not differ in school access in any way that matters, and they do not differ at all in the depth of the Diploma specialist pool. If you have been wondering whether moving one district over would solve the tutoring problem, the table below is the answer.

The column to read is the last one. In every row it says the same thing, which is the point of the exercise. A waterfront apartment family and an inland villa family in Sharjah are drawing from one market of Higher Level specialists, and that market is not organised by neighbourhood. It is organised by subject, level and who happens to be free at a workable hour.

What does differ is the shape of the evening, and that is worth taking seriously. A household with a parent commuting from Bur Dubai is working with a different afternoon from one whose parents work in Sharjah, and a child at a Dubai school is home two hours later than a child at a central Sharjah one. Those variables change the slot, not the supply.

The practical conclusion for a Maryam Island family is a relief rather than a disappointment. You are not at a disadvantage relative to the next development over, and you do not need to find a local answer that does not exist. You need a specialist in the right subject at the right level, available at an hour your household can actually protect.

02

Why the answer is the same in every one of them

  • A Higher Level specialist needs years in a Diploma school; there are not many per emirate
  • Distance filtering keeps availability and discards experience
  • Subject-and-level filtering keeps experience and discards only physical presence
  • The conclusion is identical across every waterfront district

The reason the last column does not vary is arithmetic. A Higher Level Chemistry specialist needs to have taught the subject through at least two full cycles, which means several years in a Diploma school, which means a small number of people in any emirate. Spreading that small number across the districts of Sharjah leaves roughly nobody per district, whatever the search results suggest.

Distance-based searching therefore selects on the wrong variable. It keeps whoever lives nearby and is free in the late afternoon, and discards almost everybody with the relevant experience. The result feels efficient and performs poorly: three months in, the student is still losing the same marks, because the nearby tutor has been reteaching content the student already understood.

Searching by subject and level inverts it. The pool becomes smaller in the sense that fewer people qualify and much larger in the sense that geography no longer excludes anybody. For a Maryam Island family this is the whole argument, and it applies identically in Al Khan, Al Majaz and Al Taawun, which is why we have not written four different pages claiming otherwise.

IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE, so there is no version of our service that involves a tutor at your door in any of these districts. What we can offer is the specialist pool without the distance filter, taught live and one-to-one in a slot your household sets. That is the whole proposition, and it is the same proposition we would make to a family one street away.

03

Where a session actually happens in an apartment

  • A closing door and headphones matter more than a dedicated study
  • Later can be better: after a younger sibling's bedtime is often the quiet hour
  • Check the connection before the session starts, not at the start
  • Treat the slot as fixed and the arrangement survives the term

This is the part of the problem that villa-district advice ignores. A Diploma student in a two or three bedroom apartment on Maryam Island has one desk if they are lucky, a shared living room, and siblings who are also at home at five o'clock. The time is not the only constraint; the space is, and a plan that ignores it produces a session the student cannot concentrate in.

A visiting tutor makes that worse, which is counter-intuitive until you picture it. Another adult in a small living room means the session is audible throughout the apartment, the rest of the household rearranges itself around it, and the student performs rather than works. Several families tell us this was the actual reason an in-person arrangement stopped, not the cost and not the traffic.

An online session needs a surface, a door that closes and headphones, and it can move to the hour when those three are available. In many waterfront households that hour is later than the obvious one, after a younger sibling is in bed, and that is a perfectly good time for a sixteen-year-old. We would rather set a 7.30pm slot that is genuinely quiet than a 5pm slot that is technically free.

Two practical details are worth getting right from the start. Test the connection before the slot rather than during it, and agree that the hour is fixed when something else comes up. Those two habits are the difference between thirty completed sessions and twenty-two, and only the household can supply them.

04

What the waterfront market charges, read monthly first

Most rate discussions start with an hourly figure, which is the least useful way for a household to think about it. Start with the month. Bestimate's 2026 monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget band, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. That is the number that goes in a household budget, and it is the number to decide on before any tutor is chosen.

The hourly bands behind those figures, read in October 2026, are these. Budget online tutors run roughly AED 33 to 65, with Tutopiya advertising from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. A qualified subject tutor online sits at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB tuition from AED 200. A specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270, and premium examiner-led provision reaches AED 650 at BartyED.

In-home visits sit at AED 180 to 350 on Bestimate's table, and AED 200 to 500 with independent home tutors. The monthly packages make the gap starkest: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. That is the same eight contact hours at roughly double the cost, and in an apartment the visit also costs you the quiet of the whole flat for the hour.

Every figure here is published by the provider named and is quoted so you can check it yourself. None of it is an IB Gram price list, and we are not going to invent one for a page; for ours, take the free trial lesson and ask against your child's actual subject and level.

The Diploma load against a waterfront evening

  • Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Extended Essay, TOK and CAS
  • Two to three hours of school-set work on an ordinary weekday
  • The DP1 spring is the pressure point, not DP2 November
  • One subject done properly beats three done thinly

A Diploma student carries six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service. On an ordinary weekday that is two to three hours of school-set work. In a Maryam Island household where a parent returns from Dubai at seven, the evening the student actually has is shorter than the timetable suggests, and the tutoring hour has to be carved out rather than added.

The load is also distributed badly across the two years. DP1 feels manageable until the spring, when internal assessment drafts, the Extended Essay research question and the first mocks arrive together. DP2 opens with everything that slipped still outstanding. The sensible response is to put more hours into the first half of DP1 than feels necessary, because that is the only part of the programme with room in it.

Higher Level choices change the arithmetic sharply. Three Higher Level sciences with Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level leaves almost no evening, and a student in that position needs fewer tutoring hours in more concentrated bursts rather than three weekly subjects. We will say so rather than sell the third subject, because three thin hours in a packed term achieve less than one used properly.

The structure that works for most waterfront households is one protected hour in the subject causing most damage, with a second added only once the first is stable after six weeks. It is slower than anxiety wants and it is the arrangement still running in March, which is the only test that matters.

06

A video slot against a tutor at the door of an apartment

The comparison is worth making on its merits rather than being asserted. In-home tuition has real advantages: physical presence, easier management of a distractible younger child, independence from a connection. Those are genuine. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, so the in-home column below describes what the Sharjah market sells, and is here so you can weigh it honestly.

On a waterfront development the logistics cut differently from a villa community. A visiting tutor needs visitor parking, building access and a lift, and in practice the last five minutes of every session are spent on arrival and departure rather than teaching. None of that is a scandal; it is just friction, and across a thirty-week year it adds up to several sessions you paid for and did not receive.

The decisive column, as ever, is who can teach your child. An in-home arrangement on the Sharjah waterfront draws from people prepared to come to the lagoon in the late afternoon. An online arrangement draws from everybody teaching that subject at that level whose hours overlap your evening. For a Standard Level subject the two pools may both be adequate; for Higher Level Chemistry they are not comparable.

If a home visit genuinely is right for your child, book it from a provider who offers it, and ask two questions first: the tutor's MoHRE private tuition work permit, and how many full Diploma cycles they have taught of that exact subject at that exact level. Both are fair questions and the answers are informative.

SPEA, KHDA and choosing between Sharjah and Dubai

Waterfront families sit close enough to the border that the school choice is genuinely open, and that choice carries a regulator with it. Sharjah private schools answer to the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in the emirate and, in Sharjah's case, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Dubai private schools answer to KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in that emirate.

Those are different kinds of oversight and they produce different experiences. Sharjah's broader approval remit means more consistency between schools and less variation in what is offered; a subject your child wants may simply not be available. Dubai's market is larger and more varied: 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula in 2024-25, with International Baccalaureate accounting for 7 per cent of students.

Two Dubai data points are useful for a family weighing the move. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. And Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places.

What neither regulator does is vet your tutor. Private tutoring sits with MoHRE under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023; the private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years, is open to school teachers, public and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app and e-services system with a stated two-working-day completion time. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE or the IB.

08

What a tutor may do with the Diploma core

  • Teaching, criterion explanation and feedback on the student's own draft: yes
  • Writing, completing or finishing assessed work: never, at any price
  • Official papers and mark schemes as downloads: no, we link the source
  • A tutor who also marks your child's school work: no

The core is where the integrity line matters most, because the work is written at home over months and the deadlines are internal. This market contains providers who sell completed internal assessments; one page in this research advertises finished work at AED 3,750. For a student that is not a shortcut but a malpractice finding, and the risk falls on the whole diploma rather than one subject grade.

The boundary in plain terms. A tutor may teach the subject content, explain how the assessment criteria award marks, discuss and sharpen a research question the student proposed, model structure using a different example, read a draft the student wrote and say where the argument is unsupported or the method unclear, and teach referencing and data handling properly.

A tutor may not write any part of the work, rewrite it, complete it, edit it to a finished state or produce a worked version of the student's own question. We also do not reproduce or supply IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads; we reference them and link the official source, because reproducing them is a copyright matter.

One further rule concerns teachers. ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Treat the ADEK wording as press-reported and check the current policy document; the principle holds regardless, and we will not arrange it.

09

Starting on the Sharjah waterfront

  • Identify the genuinely quiet hour before choosing a slot
  • Prioritise by damage done, not by lowest grade
  • Bring the school's internal deadline schedule to the trial
  • Set the week-four evidence in advance and check it

Begin with two facts rather than a search. First, the hour when your apartment is genuinely quiet, which may be later than the hour when your child is free. Second, the subject and level causing the most damage, which is not always the subject with the lowest grade; a Higher Level subject at 4 does more harm than a Standard Level subject at 3.

Then collect the school's internal deadline schedule and one recent piece of marked work. Those two documents let a specialist tell you something useful in the first hour, rather than spending that hour establishing where the student is. The internal schedule matters more than families expect, because it is what actually governs a Diploma year.

Use the free trial as a diagnosis. A good trial ends with a specific statement: this is a content gap in topic six, or this is a command-term problem across all papers, or this is a workload-management problem that more tutoring will not solve. Those three need genuinely different plans, and a trial that produces only warmth has told you about the provider rather than the student.

Then review at four weeks against evidence set in advance. If the agreed errors have not stopped recurring and the timed work has not moved, we change the specialist rather than defend the match. Ask any provider you are considering how they would answer that, and notice whether they have an answer ready. The question is reasonable and a serious provider will have thought about it before you asked.

Where we tutor

Maryam Island and the districts it is usually compared with

What actually differs between these Sharjah districts, stated plainly. Housing type and the drive to Dubai change; the depth of the Diploma specialist pool does not.

Maryam Island

Waterfront apartment development on the lagoon with promenade retail. Apartment living, limited quiet study space, and a short run to the Dubai border. No school inside the development.

Al Khan

Immediately adjacent, older, also largely apartments, with the lagoon on one side and Al Mamzar across the border. Same school access, same tutor market, slightly cheaper housing and no difference at all in Diploma supply.

Al Majaz

Central Sharjah on the other side of the lagoon, a mix of towers and older housing, with the highest share of Dubai commuters in the emirate. Later evenings and the same specialist shortage.

Al Taawun

Coastal towers close to the Dubai border, popular with families working in Deira and Bur Dubai. The border proximity shapes the school choice far more than it shapes tutoring availability.

Al Mamzar side

The Dubai districts immediately across the border, where a number of waterfront Sharjah families send children to school. Later finishes and a return journey that makes a 4.30pm session impossible.

Muwaileh

Inland school cluster, twenty-five to forty minutes away depending on the hour. A Maryam Island child schooled here faces a longer afternoon than one at a central Sharjah school.

Al Nahda, Sharjah

Dense residential district straddling the border, with a very high number of families commuting into Dubai daily. Another neighbourhood where the comparison with Maryam Island changes nothing material.

Aljada

Inland, newer, villa and townhouse heavy, which gives those families more study space and no better access to a Higher Level specialist. A useful control case for the argument on this page.

Tell us when the apartment is quiet

Not when your child is free, but when the flat is workable: siblings settled, a door that closes, no shared-room conflict. On a waterfront development that hour is frequently later than the obvious one, and choosing it honestly is what makes the arrangement last past half term.

The programme year, the subject, and whether it is Higher or Standard Level. We also ask which subject is doing the most damage rather than which has the lowest grade, because a Higher Level 4 costs more points than a Standard Level 3 and the two should not be treated alike.

  3. 03

    Send the internal deadline schedule

The school's own dates for internal assessment drafts, Extended Essay stages and TOK components. Those govern a Diploma year far more than the examination session does, and a tutoring plan built on them beats one built on guessed exam dates every time.

  4. 04

A free trial that ends in a diagnosis

The tutor works through a real question or a section of the student's own draft and tells you whether this is content, technique or workload. You get it in writing, nothing is paid beforehand, and the diagnosis is useful even if you take it elsewhere.

  5. 05

Fix the slot, agree a fallback day

A standing weekly time in Gulf Standard Time plus one alternative day for weeks when an internal deadline lands on it. Sessions that can move get kept; sessions that can only be cancelled get cancelled, and that is how arrangements quietly end.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We will tell you the comparison does not matter

A page that claimed Maryam Island had better tutor supply than Al Khan would be easier to sell and untrue. The Diploma specialist pool is thin across the whole emirate and is not organised by district, and knowing that saves you a month of looking for a local answer that does not exist.

Built for apartment households

No visitor, no parking, no access code, and a session contained in one room with headphones rather than filling a shared living space. For waterfront families that is frequently the deciding factor, and it is the one competitors in this market never mention.

Matched by subject and level

A tutor is chosen for having taught Higher Level Chemistry through two full cycles, not for living near the lagoon. Distance filtering keeps availability and discards experience, which is precisely the wrong trade when the problem is exam technique.

Rates you can check

Every AED figure here carries the provider that published it and the month it was read, starting from the monthly estimate because that is what a household budgets. Three of six competitor pages in this research publish no price at all and two quote US dollars.

No invented IB dates

We describe the May session and send you to your school's IB coordinator for specifics, because the IB's own site blocks automated verification. A confidently wrong date on a page a parent acts on is worse than no date, and several pages ranking for these searches carry one.

A hard line on the core

Tutors coach the process, explain criteria and read drafts the student wrote. They do not write, complete or finish an internal assessment, Extended Essay or TOK essay, and we do not hand out official papers or mark schemes. In this market that boundary is a differentiator rather than a platitude.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Maryam Island: your questions answered

Would we find a better IB tutor if we lived in Al Khan or Al Majaz instead?+

No, and it is worth settling that before you spend a month looking. Maryam Island, Al Khan, Al Majaz and Al Taawun draw on one tutoring market, not four. The constraint on Diploma tutoring in Sharjah is how few people have taught a given Higher Level subject through two full cycles, and those people are not distributed by district. What does change between these neighbourhoods is housing type and the drive to the Dubai border, neither of which affects who can teach Higher Level Chemistry.

Is an apartment a problem for one-to-one tuition?+

It is a real constraint and it is solvable, though not by having a tutor visit. A Diploma student in a Maryam Island apartment needs a surface, a door that closes and headphones, which is achievable in most flats at some hour of the day. A visiting tutor makes the session audible throughout the apartment and the whole household rearranges itself around it. Several families have told us that was the actual reason their in-person arrangement stopped, rather than the cost or the traffic.

What hour works best for a waterfront household?+

Later than most advice assumes. If a parent commutes back from Dubai and a younger sibling is at home from mid-afternoon, the hour when the flat is genuinely quiet may be 7.30pm rather than 5pm, and that is a perfectly good time for a sixteen-year-old. We would rather set a slot that is quiet and holds than one that looks neat on a timetable and is interrupted twice a month. Pick for noise first and traffic second, which is the reverse of the usual order.

How much does IB tuition cost per month in this part of Sharjah?+

Start from the monthly figure rather than the hourly one. Bestimate's 2026 monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget band, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support, read in October 2026. Market packages show about AED 799 a month for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those are the providers' published figures, not IB Gram prices.

Should we send our child to a Sharjah school or across the border to Dubai?+

That is a schooling decision rather than a tutoring one, and the regulator changes with it. Sharjah schools answer to SPEA, which approves fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, producing more consistency and sometimes less choice. Dubai schools answer to KHDA and sit in a larger market: 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen curricula in 2024-25, with IB programmes at 7 per cent of students. Note also the longer afternoon: a Dubai-schooled child from the waterfront is home much later.

My child has three Higher Level subjects. Can they manage three weekly tutoring hours?+

Almost certainly not, and we will say so rather than sell them. Three Higher Level subjects plus the core already fill the evening with two to three hours of school-set work, so three added hours displace sleep rather than adding learning. Start with one protected hour in the subject doing the most damage, hold it for six weeks, and add a second only if the first is stable. Three thin hours in a packed term produce less than one hour used properly, which is a harder sentence to sell and a truer one.

Which Sharjah schools do the students you support on the waterfront attend?+

Students we support in this part of Sharjah study across the central lagoon schools, including Victoria International School of Sharjah and Sharjah English School, with some at the inland Muwaileh cluster and a meaningful number travelling across the border to Dubai schools such as Deira International School. We name schools as context for where students study. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any of them and none should be inferred.

Does being close to Dubai help with finding a Diploma tutor?+

Marginally and not in the way families hope. A larger pool of Diploma teachers works in Dubai, but they are at work during the hours when a tutor is needed, and the drive north at five o'clock makes an in-person arrangement across the border unattractive to them at any rate you would want to pay. Proximity to Dubai changes your school options genuinely and your tutoring options hardly at all. The thing that actually widens the pool is removing the travel requirement altogether.

When should a DP1 student start tutoring?+

Earlier than feels necessary, because DP1 is the only part of the programme with room in it. The autumn of DP1 is cheap time: no internal assessment deadlines yet, mocks a long way off, and the student still has evenings. From the spring onwards internal assessment drafts, the Extended Essay question and the first mocks arrive together, and by DP2 the schedule is full of work that slipped. Families who front-load the first half of DP1 spend less overall and arrive in DP2 in a different position.

How much of the Extended Essay can a tutor legitimately be involved in?+

Yes, and that is one of the most valuable things a tutor does. They can read what your child has written and say where the argument lacks support, where the method is unclear and where the research question has drifted, explain how the criteria award marks, and teach referencing properly. They cannot write any part of it, rewrite it, complete it or edit it to a finished state. Providers in this market sell finished essays outright; buying one risks the whole diploma rather than one component.

Is Theory of Knowledge worth paying for support on?+

It is one of the better returns per hour in the whole programme, mostly because it is the component students leave latest. TOK is assessed by a prescribed-title essay and an exhibition of three objects against a knowledge question, and the common failure is not weak thinking but an essay that describes rather than argues about knowledge. Four or five sessions of process coaching on structure and the use of examples moves that reliably, and it costs less than a term of subject tutoring.

Do you tutor the MYP Personal Project as well?+

Yes, as process coaching. The Personal Project is assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the product itself, and most students lose marks on the process documentation rather than on the product. A tutor can teach what each criterion asks for, help structure the process journal and read what the student has written. The product and the writing must be the student's own, which is both an IB requirement and the only reason the project is worth doing.

How quickly can you match a Diploma specialist for a Sharjah student?+

For mainstream Diploma subjects, usually two to four days and often inside forty-eight hours. For less common Higher Level options or second-language subjects, five to ten days, and in those cases expect us to say whether the specialist is based in the UAE or teaching into your evening from another timezone. Households willing to take a weekend-morning slot are matched faster across every subject, because the weekday evening between about 4.30pm and 7.30pm is the most contested window in the emirate.

What do we do during Ramadan?+

Move the slot rather than pausing it. School days shorten and the useful study window shifts, so a 5pm session that worked in January is the wrong slot in Ramadan. For waterfront households a post-Iftar session between roughly 8.30pm and 10pm tends to work well, particularly for Diploma students already keeping late hours, and a short early-morning session suits others. Decide which before the month starts. Families who improvise usually lose the whole month, and a month out of DP1 is expensive to recover.

Do you publish IB examination dates?+

No, deliberately. UAE Diploma candidates sit the May session, and that is as specific as we will be on a page, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and we are not prepared to restate a date we cannot verify. A confidently wrong date is worse than no date, especially one a parent acts on. Ask your school's IB coordinator for the session dates and, more usefully, for the internal deadline schedule, which is what actually governs the year. Cambridge and Pearson dates we do cite come from the boards' published material.

The district is not the problem; the subject is

If you have been searching for an IB home tutor in Maryam Island and wondering whether a different development would make it easier, it would not. The Diploma specialist pool is thin across the whole emirate and it is not arranged by neighbourhood. What will help is naming the subject and level doing the most damage, finding the hour when your apartment is genuinely quiet, and bringing the school's internal deadline schedule and one recent piece of marked work. Send us those and we will match a specialist, hold the slot in Gulf Standard Time with a fallback day, and run a free trial lesson that ends with a written diagnosis. Lessons are live, one-to-one and online.
