IGCSE Home Tutor in Maryam Island

Families searching for an IGCSE home tutor in Maryam Island usually start by comparing neighbourhoods and should be comparing something else. Maryam Island is a waterfront development on the Sharjah lagoon, and the difference between it and Al Khan next door is housing, not tutoring. The comparisons that change your child's grade are between provider models, between Cambridge and Edexcel, and between Core and Extended tier. IB Gram teaches these subjects live online and does not visit UAE homes.

IB & IGCSE in Maryam Island

Compare the models, not the postcodes

Maryam Island is a waterfront apartment development on the Sharjah lagoon, between Al Khan and Al Majaz and minutes from the Dubai border. Families here routinely begin the search for IGCSE support by comparing their district with the one next door, and it is the wrong comparison. These lagoon neighbourhoods share one tutoring market. The difference between them is the view, the age of the building and the service charge, not the depth of the pool of people who have taught Cambridge 0620 Chemistry at Extended tier.

The comparisons that do change a grade are three, and none of them is geographic. The first is between provider models: an agency, an international marketplace, a freelance tutor, a tuition centre and a platform are genuinely different products at genuinely different prices with genuinely different failure modes. The second is between Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, which are separate awarding bodies with separate codes and papers. The third is between Core and Extended tier, which decides the ceiling your child is working towards.

Most pages ranking for these searches compare themselves with an unnamed set of other platforms, which tells a parent nothing. This page compares the models by what they charge, what they include, whether a permit can be verified and what happens when a match goes wrong, with every rate attributed to whoever published it and the month it was read. You can check each figure, and you should.

IB Gram's own model is worth stating at the outset so the comparison is honest. We are a matching service that teaches live, one-to-one, over video. We do not run home visits anywhere in the UAE, because home tuition is a service we offer only in India. We hold no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson, and neither does any other tutoring provider in this market.

The rest of the page works through those three comparisons in order, then covers the June and November series for a Sharjah candidate, the tuition-centre permit question that nobody explains, and the boundary on coursework. If you want the housing-and-neighbourhood version of the comparison, the IB page for this development takes that line; the combined page reads the year as a calendar. One practical note first: find the statement of entry before you read the board table, because almost nobody knows which board their child is sitting until they check. It is a five-minute job, it costs nothing, and it removes the single most common source of wasted sessions in this market: a competent tutor working carefully from the wrong specification, giving advice about paper structure and timing that is specifically and confidently wrong for the papers your child will actually sit in the summer.

At a glance

  • Maryam Island, Al Khan, Al Majaz and Al Taawun share a single tutoring market
  • Cambridge IGCSE for UAE candidates means the June and November series; February and March is India only
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November
  • Core tier caps most subjects at grade C; Extended opens the full range to A*
  • A tuition centre with premises needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit; an individual tutor needs a MoHRE permit
  • Every AED figure here is published by the provider named and was read in October 2026
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three things get compared under the heading of IGCSE and they are not the same thing. The board, the tier and the progression route each change what tutoring should be doing, and all three are decided before a parent usually finds out.

IGCSE CoreAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Core tier

Core covers the main syllabus content without the supplementary material, sets shorter papers with narrower command terms, and caps the achievable grade at C in most subjects. For a student who needs five secure passes for equivalency rather than a science route at A Level, it is the sensible placement rather than a demotion.

In Sharjah the tier is usually set by the school at the end of Year 9 and communicated badly. A Maryam Island parent should ask the subject teacher outright, because a Core-tier student being drilled on Extended material will meet unfamiliar question types in the exam hall, and an Extended-tier student fed Core questions will be under-prepared for the supplementary content that carries the top grades.

IGCSE ExtendedAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Extended tier

Extended opens the full grade range to A*, adds the supplementary content and sets longer, more analytical papers. It is the requirement for AS and A Level sciences and for most competitive university routes. The step up is in the kind of question rather than only the quantity: explanation and justification replace recall.

Extended tier is where the local tutor pool thins out across every Sharjah district equally. Many people can help with Core arithmetic. Far fewer can mark an Extended Paper 4 response the way an examiner does and explain the difference between a method mark and an accuracy mark, and the few who can are not distributed by neighbourhood.

Edexcel IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Pearson's International GCSE runs parallel to Cambridge with its own specification codes, papers and tiering. Mathematics Specification A is 4MA1, tiered Foundation and Higher across two equally weighted papers. Some subjects can be entered modularly, which changes when revision has to peak compared with a linear course.

Several Sharjah schools use Cambridge for some subjects and Pearson for others, so one child can sit two boards in a single year. The statement of entry is the only reliable source; textbook covers and school websites both lag behind actual entries, and a tutor working from the wrong board gives advice that is confidently and specifically wrong.

AS/A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

What the grades are being collected for

Most Sharjah British-curriculum students continue into AS and A Level with three or four subjects, and entry is set on IGCSE grades. The depth increase is larger than the step into IGCSE was, so a marginal Extended grade in a subject the student intends to continue is a Year 12 problem being deferred rather than solved.

For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, students submit five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. One competitor page in this market publishes six as the subject count, which is wrong; verify the rule on the Ministry's own channel.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The IGCSE subjects Sharjah families ask about, with codes where the code decides the match. Each note says where marks are actually lost, because that is what a weekly hour is for.

Mathematics (0580 / 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

Two equally weighted papers, no coursework. Extended candidates lose marks to algebra under time pressure and to problems combining topics without signalling it. Timed papers with the mark scheme open outperform further worked examples.

Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Theory papers plus, for Cambridge, the alternative-to-practical paper, which tests experimental reasoning rather than recall. It is the paper Sharjah Extended candidates most often underperform on, and it needs sessions of its own.

Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Moles and stoichiometry carry the heaviest weight and the highest failure rate. The qualitative-analysis tables and organic nomenclature are learnable by drill and are usually left until April, which is late enough to hurt.

Biology (0610 / 4BI1)

Core and Extended

High content volume with marks tied to precise terminology: a loosely correct answer scores nothing where the mark scheme names a term. Transport in plants, genetics and homeostasis recur as the weak areas year after year.

English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)

Core and Extended

Comprehension, a strictly disciplined summary task and directed writing against a stated purpose and audience. Summary marks are lost by lifting sentences from the passage rather than reformulating them properly.

English First Language (0500)

IGCSE

Directed writing and composition in one paper, reading passages in the other. Analytical marks depend on quoting precisely and commenting on effect rather than restating content, which is a technique problem rather than a vocabulary one.

Business Studies (0450 / 4BS1)

IGCSE

Case-study led, with marks sitting in application and evaluation rather than definition. A student who knows every term and cannot apply it to the stimulus material stalls around a C until the answer structure changes.

Economics (0455 / 4EC1)

IGCSE

Diagram accuracy decides a large share of the marks: axes labelled, correct shift, new equilibrium identified. Data-response answers must quote figures from the extract rather than reason in general terms.

Computer Science (0478)

IGCSE

Theory of computer systems plus algorithms and programming. Pseudocode conventions and trace tables are mechanical marks students throw away, and binary and hexadecimal conversion rewards plain drill.

Arabic as a First Language (0508)

IGCSE

Sat alongside the international curriculum because Arabic is mandatory in UAE private schools. It does not count towards the five subjects required for Ministry equivalency, which surprises most families, and it still needs preparation.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to work with us, all online. The choice follows from the comparison above: how much of the syllabus is in trouble and whether the problem is content or technique.

Weekly one-to-one on one subject

A single fixed hour a week with the same tutor through the year, which is the default for a Year 10 student with one subject drifting. It works because the tutor watches the same error recur across months and can attack the cause rather than patching the symptom each time.

  • Same tutor, same weekday, tracked error log
  • Board and tier confirmed against the statement of entry in session one
  • Homework set against the school's own scheme of work
  • One agreed fallback day for coursework weeks

Technique-only block

For the student who knows the content and loses six to eight marks a paper anyway. Sessions consist of timed questions attempted cold and then corrected line by line against the mark scheme. No new teaching, because new teaching is not the problem and more of it would be a waste of money.

  • Diagnosed in the trial, not assumed
  • Timed question every session, corrected the same session
  • Command-term discipline drilled explicitly
  • Typically six to ten sessions rather than a year

Two subjects, two specialists

The right structure when two subjects are in trouble, particularly across the sciences. One tutor asked to cover Physics, Chemistry and Biology to Extended standard is the compromise a distance-filtered search forces on a family, and it shows in exactly the places it would be expected to show.

  • A separate specialist per subject and per board
  • Consecutive slots on one evening where possible
  • A single point of contact for scheduling
  • Subjects added or dropped without restarting the match

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Maryam Island

01

The six provider models, compared on what they actually publish

This is the comparison that matters and almost nobody makes it. The IGCSE tutoring market in Sharjah contains at least six distinct models, and they differ in price, in what is included, in whether a tutor's permit can be verified and in what happens when a match goes wrong. Competitor pages compare themselves to an unnamed set of other platforms. The table below compares the models themselves, with sources.

Read the replacement-policy column carefully, because it is the one that predicts your experience six weeks in. A marketplace hands you a list and leaves the selection risk with you. An agency chooses for you and may or may not change the choice without charge. A freelance tutor is a single relationship with no fallback at all, which is fine when it works and expensive when it does not.

The permit column is the one nobody writes about. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the MoHRE private tuition work permit, granted free of charge for two years, and individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Any model can be compliant. The difference is whether you, as a parent, can actually check.

Our own row is in the table and is not flattered. We teach online only, we have no UAE premises and we offer no home visits, and we hold no regulator's approval because no tutoring provider in this market holds one. What we do publish is the rate bands other people charge, the coverage limits on our own matching, and what happens if the first tutor is wrong.

Cambridge against Pearson Edexcel, subject by subject

The second comparison is between awarding bodies, and it is the one that most often produces a mismatched tutor. Parents in the lagoon districts tell us their child does IGCSE Maths, which is not enough information to make a match. Cambridge and Pearson are separate bodies with separate specifications, paper structures and mark schemes, and fluency in one is not fluency in the other.

Find the codes in the table below on your child's statement of entry rather than on the textbook spine. Schools change board more readily than they replace their resources, so a Cambridge revision guide on an Edexcel student's shelf is an ordinary sight in Sharjah and a reliable source of confusion. It is a five-minute check that prevents the commonest error in this market.

The differences are concrete rather than cosmetic. Cambridge tiers Mathematics as Core and Extended; Pearson tiers Specification A as Foundation and Higher. Cambridge sciences include an alternative-to-practical route; Pearson handles practical skills differently. Some Pearson subjects permit modular entry, which changes when revision has to peak. None of that should be discovered in April.

A single Sharjah student can be sitting both boards in the same year, with Cambridge Physics 0625 and Pearson Chemistry 4CH1 running in parallel. That means two different approaches to practical assessment at once, and a tutor who treats them as interchangeable will spend sessions on the wrong skills. Write the board next to every subject on one sheet before you book anything.

03

Core against Extended, and what each ceiling implies

The third comparison is the tier, and it is the one with the clearest consequence. Core caps most subjects at grade C. Extended opens the range to A*. That single fact determines whether a student can take the subject at AS and A Level, which determines a large part of what they can study at university, and it is decided by a school in Year 9 on the basis of Year 9 performance.

The table sets out what changes between the tiers. The row worth dwelling on is the tutoring-hours row, because it is the practical question. Extended requires the supplementary content and a different question style, so a student moving up a tier has both more material and a new skill to acquire, and that is a two-term job rather than a half-term one.

This matters particularly for a lagoon-district family weighing whether to push for a tier change. It can be the right decision and it is not free. A student moved to Extended in the middle of Year 10 without support will meet the supplementary content cold in Year 11, and the outcome can be worse than a secure C would have been. Ask the school what evidence they want before they will move a student, then decide.

The reverse case is worth naming too. A student placed at Extended who is not coping is sometimes better served by a managed move to Core, a secure pass and five solid subjects for equivalency, than by two years of distress and a D. Schools are often reluctant to discuss it. A parent can raise it, and it is a legitimate question rather than giving up.

04

A tuition centre against one-to-one, honestly

  • Group classes are good value for content everybody needs
  • One-to-one is for individual technical habits a group cannot address
  • A Dubai centre with premises needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit; an individual tutor needs a MoHRE permit
  • Diagnose which problem you have before deciding which to buy

There are tuition centres within reach of the lagoon districts, and for some families they are the right answer. A group class at a lower per-student rate is genuinely good value when everybody in the room needs the same content explained, which is most often true in the autumn of Year 10 and in the weeks after a topic has been taught badly at school.

It is close to useless for the problem most Year 11 families actually have. If your child knows the content and loses six marks a paper to command-term misreading, presentation and timing, those are individual habits. A tutor managing six students cannot see or correct one student's specific habit, and the session is spent on material your child already has.

There is also a regulatory distinction worth knowing, because providers blur it. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. That is a specific licence for a specific kind of organisation. An individual private tutor holds a MoHRE permit instead, which is a different document entirely.

So the honest comparison is this: use a centre for content, use one-to-one for technique, and do not pay one-to-one rates for content a group class would cover as well. We would rather you spent six sessions with us on paper technique and did your content revision elsewhere than bought thirty hours of general support from anyone.

05

What the lagoon districts pay, cheapest band first

Start at the bottom of the market, because that is where most Sharjah families start. University City supplies a large number of undergraduate tutors, and published budget rates run from roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour, with Tutopiya advertising from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. For Year 9 consolidation and Core-tier support that is often entirely adequate and we will say so rather than talk you upwards.

The band stops being adequate at Extended tier in the term before a series. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. A specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai table putting specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more. Premium examiner-led provision reaches AED 650 at BartyED, which is rarely justified and almost never verifiable.

In-home visits sit at AED 180 to 350 on Bestimate's table and AED 200 to 500 with independent tutors. On a waterfront development the visit also costs you visitor parking, building access and the quiet of a shared living room for the hour, which is a cost that never appears in a rate card. Monthly packages show the gap plainly: around AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, the same eight contact hours at roughly double the price.

Every figure in this section is published by the provider named and was read in October 2026. None of it is an IB Gram price list, and we will not invent one for a page. For our pricing, take the free trial lesson and ask for a quote against the actual subject list and tier.

The June and November series for a Sharjah candidate

Cambridge International runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two. The February and March series is offered to India only, which means any page quoting a February exam window or an autumn entry deadline to a Sharjah parent has given them a date that is wrong for their country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November; its November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026.

Entry deadlines sit months before the papers and are handled by the school. Mocks fall a term earlier. Coursework and practical deadlines are earlier still and school-set. The revision peak belongs in the eight to twelve weeks before the papers, which means the content has to be learned before then, which means the autumn of Year 11 is not a planning period but a working one.

One Cambridge administrative point is worth naming because Cambridge names it itself: every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, and Cambridge states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. Ask your school which zone it sits in and work from that timetable.

The resit decision is the one families take too slowly. Pearson's June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. The autumn entry window closes shortly after August results arrive. Agree the trigger rule in advance: which grade in which subject would mean a November entry, written down before results day rather than argued about afterwards. Always check the live official timetable on the board's own site rather than relying on restated dates.

07

Coursework, practicals and the line a tutor does not cross

  • Teaching, mark-scheme explanation and feedback on the student's own draft: yes
  • Writing, completing or finishing assessed work: never
  • Official papers and mark schemes as downloads: no, we link the source
  • A tutor who also marks your child's school work: no

Several IGCSE subjects carry school-assessed components, and this market contains providers who will simply produce them. One page in this research advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. For a student in Sharjah the consequence of submitting bought work is not a lower grade; it is a malpractice finding against the qualification, and it is not recoverable.

The boundary stated plainly. A tutor may teach the skills the task requires, explain how the mark scheme awards them, model the approach on a different example, read a draft the student has written and say where it is unclear, unsupported or off-brief, and teach referencing, data handling and write-up conventions.

Where that list stops is the more useful half of the boundary, and it is also where the six models in section one separate from one another. A tutor may not write, rewrite, complete or edit the work to a finished state, and may not produce a worked version of the student's own task, however carefully the task has been paraphrased first. The same line runs through materials. We do not reproduce or supply Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads; we reference them and link the official source, because reproducing them is a copyright matter rather than a judgement call. A provider that hands over a folder of all four has told you, before you have asked, how it will treat every other boundary on this page.

There is a further rule about teachers. ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Treat the ADEK wording as press-reported and check the current policy document; the principle stands either way and we will not arrange it.

08

Making the three comparisons in one evening

  • Board, code and tier per subject, from the statement of entry
  • Diagnose content against technique before choosing a model
  • Ask about rate basis, permit and replacement policy
  • Set the week-four evidence in advance

All of this is actionable in about an hour. Find the statement of entry and write down, per subject, the board, the code and the tier. That settles two of the three comparisons immediately and it is information most parents in these districts do not have to hand, which is why so many first sessions are spent establishing it.

Then decide which problem you are buying a solution to. If content is missing, a group class or a budget-band tutor may be the efficient answer and we will tell you so. If the content is there and six marks a paper are leaking to technique, that is one-to-one work and a short block of it rather than a year. The trial lesson exists to tell you which of those two you have.

Then make the model choice with the table above open. Ask any provider three questions: what the rate is and whether it is per hour or per session, whether the tutor holds a MoHRE private tuition work permit, and what happens if the match is wrong in week two. A provider who answers all three without hesitation is a different proposition from one who answers none.

Finally, agree the week-four evidence before anything starts. Which errors should have stopped recurring, what should be happening on timed questions, whether the work between sessions is getting done. We change the specialist if that evidence is missing rather than defending the first choice, and you should expect the same of anybody you pay.

Where we tutor

The lagoon districts, and why the list is short

These neighbourhoods are the ones Maryam Island gets compared with. The notes describe what genuinely differs, which is less than the comparison usually assumes.

Maryam Island

New waterfront apartments with promenade retail on the Sharjah lagoon. No school inside the development and no tuition centre; everything is a short drive, including the Dubai border.

Al Khan

Directly adjacent and older, also apartment-based, with the same school access and the same tutor market. Housing is cheaper and the IGCSE supply situation is identical in every respect that matters.

Al Majaz

Across the lagoon in central Sharjah, a mix of towers and older housing, with the emirate's highest share of Dubai commuters. Later evenings, same specialist shortage, several tuition centres within reach.

Al Taawun

Coastal towers nearest the Dubai border, popular with families working in Deira and Bur Dubai. Border proximity shapes the school choice far more than it shapes who can teach 0625 Extended.

Al Nahda, Sharjah

Dense residential district straddling the border with a very high daily commute into Dubai. Another neighbourhood where comparing it with Maryam Island changes nothing about tutoring.

Muwaileh

The inland school cluster, twenty-five to forty minutes away depending on the hour. A lagoon-district child schooled here faces the longest afternoon of any Sharjah-schooled student.

University City

Source of the budget tutor band, roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour. Genuinely useful for lower-secondary support and thin above Core tier, which is the honest version of what proximity to a campus buys you.

Al Zahia

Inland, newer, closer to the schools. Those families have more afternoon and no better access to an Extended-tier specialist, which is the control case for the argument on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the statement of entry details

Board, syllabus code and tier for each subject in difficulty, plus the school. Those four facts decide the match and they are the information least often available at first contact, which is why so many first sessions elsewhere are spent discovering them instead of teaching.

  2. 02

We say which model suits the problem

If the issue is missing content, we will tell you a group class or a budget-band tutor may be the efficient answer. We would rather give you six useful sessions than thirty unnecessary ones, and saying that up front is cheaper for us than a cancellation in week five.

The tutor sets a real past-paper question, marks it against the mark scheme and tells you in writing whether this is a content gap, a technique problem or a coverage-sequence issue from a school transfer. Nothing is paid before the trial and the diagnosis stands regardless of what you do next.

Fix the slot and a fallback day

A weekly time in Gulf Standard Time chosen around the real afternoon, plus one agreed alternative day for coursework and mock weeks. Sessions that can move survive the four or five disrupted weeks every IGCSE year contains; sessions that can only be cancelled do not.

  5. 05

    Four-week review, change if needed

We check the evidence agreed at the start: recurring errors, timed-question performance, work completed between sessions. If it is not there we move the student to another specialist in the same subject rather than arguing for the original match.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We compare models, not straw men

The table on this page compares agency, marketplace, freelance, centre, budget platform and our own model on published rates and replacement policy. Every competitor page in this research compares itself to an unnamed set of other platforms, which tells a parent nothing they can act on.

Every rate carries its source

Each AED figure here names the provider that published it and the month it was read. Three of six competitor pages in this research publish no price at all, and two quote US dollars to families who transact in dirhams. You can check all of it before contacting anyone.

Matched to the code and the tier

A tutor is chosen for having taught 0580 Extended or 4MA1 Higher repeatedly, not for living near the lagoon. Board and tier are confirmed against the statement of entry in the first session, because that is where wrong-board advice originates.

We will send you elsewhere

If the problem is missing content rather than technique, a group class or a budget tutor may be better value and we say so. A provider who recommends their most expensive option for every problem is telling you what they sell, not what you need.

The correct UAE exam calendar

UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June and November series; the February and March series is India only. Several pages ranking for these searches publish the February dates to Gulf parents, which is a date a family acts on and gets wrong.

No regulator claimed

We hold no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson, and we explain the difference between a tuition-centre permit and an individual tutor's permit so you can ask the right question of anybody.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Maryam Island: your questions answered

Is IGCSE tutoring easier to find in Al Khan than in Maryam Island?+

No. These two districts are adjacent, share the same school access and draw on the same tutor market, and the difference between them is housing age and service charge rather than tutoring supply. The real constraint is how few people have taught a given Extended-tier syllabus through a full two-year cycle, and those people are not distributed by neighbourhood. If you have been considering whether a different lagoon district would solve the problem, it will not, and the month spent checking is better spent on the board and tier.

Which provider model gives the best value for an Extended-tier student?+

It depends on the problem, which is why the comparison table on this page is organised by model rather than by brand. For missing content, a tuition centre group class or a budget-band online tutor at AED 33 to 65 an hour is efficient. For individual technical habits costing six marks a paper, one-to-one is the only model that can address them, and a short block of six to ten sessions usually beats a year of general support. Diagnose first, then choose the model.

How do I check whether a tutor in Sharjah is permitted to teach?+

Ask them directly for their MoHRE private tuition work permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Because it is free and completes in about two working days through the MoHRE smart app and e-services system, there is no good reason for a working tutor not to hold one. A hesitant answer is itself informative.

What is the difference between a tuition centre permit and a tutor permit?+

They are different documents for different things, and providers blur the distinction. An individual giving private lessons needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, obtained through initial approval, with a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. Neither document makes anyone KHDA approved as a tutor, and no tutoring provider in this market, including us, holds a regulator's endorsement.

My child is at Core tier. Does that limit university options?+

It limits the subject route rather than the student. Core caps most Cambridge subjects at grade C, which generally rules the subject out at AS and A Level, and that in turn narrows some degree options. Five secure Core passes still satisfy the Ministry of Education's British-track requirement of five accredited subjects at no less than grade E or 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education. If a particular A Level is the goal, the tier conversation needs to happen with the school in Year 10, not Year 11.

Should we push the school to move our child up to Extended tier?+

Sometimes, and not without planning. Moving up means covering the supplementary content from scratch plus adopting a different question style, which is realistically a two-term job rather than a half-term one. A student moved mid-Year 10 without support meets the supplementary material cold in Year 11 and can end up worse off than a secure C. Ask the school what evidence they want before they will move a student, get it, and then decide with a plan for the extra content rather than hoping.

Can a tutor cover both Cambridge and Pearson for the same child?+

In Sharjah you may need exactly that, because several schools run Cambridge for some subjects and Pearson for others, so one child can sit two boards in a year. We match a separate specialist per subject and per board rather than giving you one tutor who knows one specification and is guessing at the other. Read the codes from the statement of entry: Cambridge Mathematics is 0580 with Core and Extended tiers, Pearson Specification A is 4MA1 with Foundation and Higher. The textbook on the shelf is not evidence.

Why do some pages mention a February IGCSE exam series?+

Because they are repeating Cambridge's February and March series, which is offered to India only. UAE candidates sit the June and November series. A page that quotes a February exam window or an autumn entry deadline to a Sharjah parent has handed them a date to act on that is wrong for their country, and that is the kind of error that costs a family an entry. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November, with its November 2026 final timetable running to 19 November 2026.

Does the quoted hourly rate include VAT?+

Ask, and get the answer in writing, because practice varies across this market and we are not going to state the UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees without a Federal Tax Authority citation. The practical questions for a parent are three: whether the figure is per hour or per session, whether it includes any tax, and whether there is a minimum commitment. Several providers quote a session price against an hourly comparison, which makes their rate look lower than it is when you compare it with a published hourly band.

Is a group class ever better than one-to-one for IGCSE?+

Yes, and more often than one-to-one providers admit. When everybody in the room needs the same content explained, which is most of the autumn of Year 10 and any time a topic has been taught badly at school, a group class at a lower per-student rate is good value. It fails for individual technique: a tutor managing six students cannot see that your child misreads the command term in part c of every structured question. Use a centre for content and one-to-one for habits.

How soon before the June series is it too late to start?+

Ten to twelve weeks is enough to change a grade if the problem is technique, and not enough to rebuild two years if the content was never learned. Those two situations need opposite plans, which is why the trial lesson is diagnostic. If the content is broadly there and marks are going to timing, command-term misreading and presentation, timed papers with mark-scheme correction work reliably in that window. If it is not, a November entry with a proper build is the better decision than a panic block in April.

What happens if we need to change tutor after two weeks?+

We change them, and you do not restart the arrangement or justify the request beyond telling us it is not working. At the outset we agree what week four should show: which errors have stopped recurring, what is happening on timed questions, whether work between sessions is being done. If that evidence is absent, or the relationship simply is not productive, the student moves to another specialist in the same subject. Ask any provider what their version of this answer is before you pay anything.

Are tuition centres near the lagoon districts worth travelling to?+

For the right purpose, yes. A centre within fifteen minutes is a reasonable way to buy content revision in a group at a lower per-student cost, particularly in Year 10. Weigh the journey honestly though: two trips a week into central Sharjah traffic for a student who also has school homework is a real tax on the week, and it is the reason many lagoon families who start at a centre end up online. Decide on the basis of what the sessions are for rather than on the rate alone.

Do Arabic and Islamic Education count in the five subjects for equivalency?+

No, and this catches families out. The Ministry of Education's British-track requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. They are still mandatory in UAE private schools and still take timetable space. One competitor page in this market states that six IGCSE subjects are required, which is wrong. Verify the current rule on the Ministry's own channel; IB Gram does not perform or guarantee equivalency.

Which single question should I ask every provider I contact?+

How many full two-year cycles has the proposed tutor taught of this exact syllabus code at this exact tier. It is a specific, checkable question, and the answers sort the market quickly. A provider who answers with the tutor's degree, their years of experience in general or their rapport with students has not answered it. The follow-up questions worth asking are whether the tutor holds a MoHRE private tuition work permit and what happens if the match is wrong in week two.

Three comparisons, one hour, then book

If you are searching for an IGCSE home tutor in Maryam Island, stop comparing your district with the one next door and make the three comparisons that matter instead. Find the statement of entry and write down the board, the code and the tier per subject. Decide whether you are buying a fix for missing content or for leaking technique, because those need different models and different money. Then ask any provider about the rate basis, the tutor's permit and the replacement policy. Send us those details and we will match a specialist to the exact code and tier, hold a weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time with a fallback day, and run a free trial that ends in a written diagnosis. Lessons are live, one-to-one and online.
