IB IGCSE Tutor near me in Al Taawun: How to Tell Who Actually Knows the Syllabus

A parent searching for an IB IGCSE tutor near me in Al Taawun is really asking two questions at once: who is close, and who genuinely knows the course. Only the second one changes a grade. This page shows how to test syllabus knowledge in a single conversation, what the Sharjah tutor pool is actually deep in, and why IB Gram teaches Al Taawun students one-to-one over live video rather than by postcode.

  • Four questions that expose a tutor who does not know the syllabus
  • Matched on syllabus code — 0580, 4MA1, DP Maths AA HL — not subject label
  • Live-video sessions on Gulf Standard Time, slots held weekly
  • Honest coverage notes: where this pool is thin and what happens then

IB & IGCSE in Al Taawun

What "near me" is really standing in for

The phrase "tutor near me" is a proxy. Nobody actually wants proximity for its own sake. What a parent in Al Taawun wants is someone reliable, someone who will turn up, and above all someone who knows the specific course their child is failing. Distance got used as a filter because for decades it was the only filter available, and a tutor who lived in Al Majaz could be checked on by asking a neighbour.

That filter has a cost, and in a Sharjah tower district the cost is sharp. Restrict the search to tutors willing to drive to Al Taawun at 5pm and the list shrinks to perhaps a dozen people across all subjects and both curricula. Ask that list for a Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 specialist, or an IB Diploma Chemistry HL tutor who can coach the Internal Assessment without crossing the integrity line, and the list usually shrinks to zero. The proxy has filtered out the thing it was meant to find.

Al Taawun's own geography makes this worse than it sounds. The district is a band of residential towers along the Al Khan lagoon, close to the Al Mamzar crossing into Dubai. Many children here attend Dubai schools and come home through that crossing, which puts the end of their day past 6.30pm. A tutor who must also drive is competing with the same traffic. The slots that remain are the ones nobody wants.

So the honest answer to "is there anyone near me who actually knows this syllabus" is: possibly, for the common subjects, and probably not for the specific paper your child is losing marks on. Which is why this page spends its length on a different question — how do you test syllabus knowledge before you pay for it? That test takes one conversation and it works regardless of where the tutor sits.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE. In-home visits are offered only in India. Al Taawun students are taught one-to-one over live video, with the past paper on a shared screen and the session timed in Gulf Standard Time. The point of that model is not convenience. It is that the pool stops being a dozen people who will drive to the lagoon and becomes everyone who teaches the course properly.

One framing worth keeping while you read. A tutor cannot be verified on distance, years of experience or a list of schools, because none of those can be checked from your side of the conversation. A tutor can be verified on whether they know the paper, and that is checkable in five minutes by anyone, including a parent who has never studied the subject.

Below: the four questions that separate a subject tutor from a syllabus tutor, what the IB and IGCSE routes in Sharjah schools actually require, where this tutor pool is genuinely deep and where it is thin, and what a parent can verify independently before any money changes hands.

At a glance

  • Proximity filters for availability, not for syllabus knowledge — they are different things
  • Ask for the syllabus code, not the subject: 0580 Extended, 4PH1, DP Biology HL
  • Cambridge allocates centres to six timetable zones; the school's version is the only correct one
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free and valid two years, so ask whether a tutor holds it
  • Sessions for Al Taawun students run over live video, not at a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Al Taawun search that names both IB and IGCSE usually comes from a household where the two sit side by side — siblings in different schools, or a student who moved from one system to the other. The programmes below are the ones that actually appear in this catchment, with what each demands of a tutor.

DPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service. Every subject carries an Internal Assessment marked against published criteria lettered A onward. A DP tutor has to know those criterion descriptors by letter, because that is how the work is marked and how a draft is diagnosed.

UAE schools sit the May session. IB exam and results dates are not restated on this page because ibo.org blocks automated checking and an unverified date is worse than none — confirm every DP date with your school's IB coordinator. What is verifiable locally is the mandatory-subject requirement: Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run alongside the Diploma in UAE private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum.

MYPAges 11–16 · Years 7–11

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria per subject, each scored 0–8 and converted to a 1–7 grade by published boundaries. The MYP marks process and communication as well as answer accuracy, which is why strong students sometimes score 4s: the mathematics is right and the justification criterion is empty. A tutor who cannot name the four criteria for the subject is guessing.

The MYP-to-DP step is the most common reason Sharjah families start tutoring in Year 11. MYP mathematics samples topics the Diploma assumes fluency in, and the jump into Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level exposes that gap within a term. Al Taawun students moving between the two systems benefit from a diagnostic on the specific algebra and function work the DP course opens with.

IGCSEAges 14–16 · Years 10–11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Two separate qualifications that parents and even school reports often merge. Cambridge codes are four digits — 0580 Mathematics, 0625 Physics, 0620 Chemistry. Pearson codes start with 4 — 4MA1, 4PH1, 4CH1. Tiering differs: Cambridge runs Core and Extended, Pearson Mathematics Specification A runs Foundation and Higher. The papers, the weightings and the question styles all differ with them.

Cambridge runs IGCSE in June and November series for UAE candidates; the February/March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. The November 2026 Pearson final timetable ran to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students in January — November 2025 results arrived on 22 January 2026.

AS/AAges 16–18 · Years 12–13

AS and A Level

The alternative post-16 route in several Sharjah schools, and often the comparison a family is making against the Diploma. Three or four subjects in depth rather than six in breadth, with no Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge. A student strong in two subjects and weak in languages usually does better here; a student who wants breadth and a university application narrative usually does better on the DP.

MoE equivalency on the British track asks for one accredited subject at Advanced Level at a grade no less than E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, alongside five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count of five. The equivalent IB figure is not published in that source, so it should not be stated without a Ministry page to cite.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

These are the IB Diploma subjects Al Taawun families most often need, each with the thing a tutor must be able to name on first contact. If a prospective tutor cannot name it, they are learning the course at your expense.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebra-heavy route. At Higher Level, Paper 3 is an extended investigation and the single most common reason a predicted 6 becomes a 4. A tutor should be able to say what Paper 3 asks for and how it differs from Papers 1 and 2 before discussing rates.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology-permitted work throughout. Students arriving from IGCSE Extended often assume it is the easier route and find the modelling questions unfamiliar. The exploration is marked on the same criteria as AA but rewards genuine data, which is where most of the lost marks sit.

Physics

HL and SL

Higher Level adds depth rather than breadth, and the additional topics are where HL students separate. Extended-response marks go to candidates who state the physical principle before the calculation. The Internal Assessment is assessed on experimental design and analysis, not on the result being correct.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and energetics carry the grade. Students lose marks writing equations without state symbols and describing mechanisms without curly arrows where they are required. A tutor coaching the IA must work on the student's own research question, never supply one written up.

Biology

HL and SL

Command terms do the damage. Outline, explain, distinguish and discuss carry different mark expectations, and students who answer all four the same way plateau at a 5. The data-based questions on unfamiliar experiments are trainable and routinely untrained.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy plus the evaluation paragraph decide the grade. The Internal Assessment is a set of commentaries built on published news articles, and the recurring failure is choosing an article with no diagram-able economics in it. That choice is made in week one and cannot be fixed later.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The Individual Oral and Paper 1 unseen analysis are the two components tutoring moves most. Students lose marks by summarising a text rather than analysing how meaning is constructed. HL adds the essay, which is assessed on sustained argument rather than coverage.

Business Management

HL and SL

Application to the named organisation is everything; a textbook-perfect answer with no reference to the case scores in the bottom band. HL adds extension topics and a longer Paper 2. The Internal Assessment requires real organisational data, and sourcing that is the first real task.

Arabic (language acquisition and language A routes)

SL, HL and ab initio

Mandatory alongside the licensed curriculum in UAE private schools and available as a Diploma subject in its own right. Separate streams exist for Arab and non-Arab students because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ, so material from one stream does not transfer to the other.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core components

Both are coached, never written. TOK is assessed on an exhibition and an essay on a prescribed title; the Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent piece with a supervisor. A tutor's legitimate role is teaching the structure, questioning the argument and giving feedback on the student's own draft.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

Alongside the Diploma, these are the IGCSE subjects most requested in this catchment, with the code to confirm with the school before any tutoring starts.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended · Pearson 4MA1 Foundation and Higher

The tier decides the grade ceiling: Cambridge Core caps at C. Extended Paper 4 carries the structured questions where method marks are won and lost, and unshown working on a four-mark question typically scores one.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

Electricity and electromagnetism account for most dropped marks, usually because a potential divider is read as a plain series circuit. Which practical route the centre uses — timetabled practical or alternative-to-practical — changes the revision plan substantially.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

Mole calculations and organic pathways decide the grade. Cambridge examines qualitative analysis tables in detail and those are among the cheapest marks on the paper; Pearson leans harder on calculation.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1

Volume rather than difficulty. Extended-response marks go to students using mark-scheme vocabulary — partially permeable, active transport, selective reabsorption — rather than paraphrasing it in their own words.

English Language and Literature

Cambridge 0500 / 0990 · Pearson 4EA1

Directed writing is marked on audience, register and form as well as content. Reading questions require quotation plus explanation; a quotation on its own scores nothing. The Pearson anthology differs, so revision material does not cross over.

Business Studies and Economics

Cambridge 0450 and 0455 · Pearson 4BS1 and 4EC1

Evaluation questions carry the top marks and need a judgement with a reason. Economics diagrams are credited separately for axis labels, shift direction and the new equilibrium, so a remembered sketch loses marks before the explanation begins.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478 · Pearson 4CP0

Theory on data representation and networks is learnable and chronically under-revised while students spend their time coding. Pseudocode is marked against the syllabus's own conventions, not Python, which costs marks on trace tables.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge 0606, Extended only

Calculus, logarithms and trigonometric identities that 0580 never reaches. Treating it as harder 0580 practice is the standard mistake. Students who do well have drilled differentiation and the factor theorem deliberately.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements that answer the "near me" question in different ways. All three are delivered over live video for UAE students; what changes is the shape of the commitment and what it is capable of fixing.

Single-subject weekly slot

One tutor, one syllabus, one fixed hour a week held for the term. This is the arrangement that most closely replaces what a local tutor would have done, minus the travel. It suits a student with a diagnosed gap in one subject who will do the work between sessions.

  • Same tutor each week; the slot is held rather than rebooked
  • Matched on the syllabus code confirmed with the school
  • Past-paper questions worked live, not set as homework
  • A written line after each session naming what comes next

Dual-curriculum household

Two children on different systems — one on IGCSE, one on the Diploma — sharing an evening. Separate specialists, consecutive slots, one schedule. Families in Al Taawun ask for this often because towers hold siblings in different schools across the Dubai border.

  • Different tutors for different programmes, not one generalist
  • Consecutive slots so one laptop and one quiet room serve both
  • Separate progress notes per child
  • Reviewed against each school's own assessment calendar

Coursework and core coaching

Support on the Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge, and on IGCSE project components where a centre runs them. Structured as feedback cycles on the student's own drafts against the published criteria. Nothing is written for the student at any stage.

  • Criterion descriptors read together, by letter, before drafting starts
  • Feedback on the student's own draft; no supplied text
  • Deadlines mapped to the school's internal timeline, not an external one
  • Stops at submission

01

Four questions that reveal whether a tutor knows the syllabus

  • Ask for the board and code first; a syllabus tutor asks you before you ask them
  • Ask them to describe the hardest component and what it rewards
  • Ask where marks are lost and how they diagnose it from marked work
  • Ask what they will refuse to do with coursework
  • Decline to be reassured by experience claims you cannot check

This is the whole test, and it takes about five minutes. Ask these four questions of anyone — local, online, agency or independent — and the answers sort the field faster than any credential list.

First: which board and which code does my child sit? A tutor who knows the course asks you this before you ask them, because it determines everything that follows. Second: what does the hardest component look like? For IB Diploma Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Paper 3 is an extended investigation and a tutor should be able to describe how it differs from Papers 1 and 2 without hesitating. For Cambridge 0580 Extended it is Paper 4 and the structured long questions.

Third: where do students usually lose marks in this subject, and how do you know? The useful answer is specific and diagnosable — unshown method on multi-mark questions, missing mark-scheme vocabulary in extended responses, potential dividers read as series circuits. The useless answer is "exam nerves" or "they need to build confidence". Fourth: what will you not do with my child's Internal Assessment? A tutor who cannot answer that cleanly is a risk, not a bargain.

Notice what is not on this list. Nothing about distance, nothing about years of experience in the abstract, nothing about how many students they have taught. Those are the easiest things for a weak tutor to be impressive about, and the hardest for a parent to verify.

02

Where the Sharjah tutor pool is deep and where it is thin

This is the part of the "near me" answer nobody publishes, and it is the part that matters. Coverage is not uniform, and a parent who knows where the thin spots are can plan around them instead of discovering them in April.

Depth is real in IGCSE Mathematics, the three separate sciences, English Language and English as a Second Language. These are the subjects every curriculum needs and every tutor can teach, and in Sharjah the proximity of University City adds a genuine supply of competent subject help at the lower end of the market. For those subjects, a local search will find someone, and the four questions above will tell you whether the someone is any good.

Thinness starts where specialisation starts. Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 taught to the syllabus's own pseudocode, Accounting 0452, and IGCSE Arabic as a first language are all narrow pools. On the Diploma side, Higher Level sciences, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Economics with proper diagram coaching, and Theory of Knowledge are narrower still, because the DP is a small share of the UAE market — International Baccalaureate students were 7 per cent of Dubai's private-school population in 2024-25, against 37 per cent on UK curricula.

The practical consequence for Al Taawun: for a thin specialism, a radius search is the wrong tool entirely. The right tool is a wider pool and live video, and the right question to ask a provider is not "do you cover this" but "who specifically, and when are they free".

What a parent can verify independently, before paying

  • Ask directly whether the tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition permit
  • Get the board, code and tier from the exams officer in writing
  • Use only the zone-correct Cambridge timetable your centre issues
  • Treat unevidenced examiner claims and regulator-approval claims as red flags
  • Apply for the permit through MoHRE's own 'Private Tutor Licensing' service

Most of what tutoring providers say about themselves cannot be checked. A few things can, and those are worth your ten minutes more than any amount of marketing.

The permit is checkable by asking. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Because it costs nothing, there is no innocent reason for a working tutor not to hold one.

The board and code are checkable with one email to your school's exams officer. The timetable is checkable the same way, and this one has teeth: Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Any tutor quoting dates from a generic PDF is working from a document that may not apply to your child's centre.

Two claims are not checkable and should be treated as warnings rather than credentials. One is examiner status, which no provider should assert for an individual without evidence, and which should never be used to imply access to marking or paper content. The other is regulator approval. IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed or partnered with SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and a KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence issued to training institutes with premises. Any tutoring service describing itself as regulator-approved should be asked to show the permit number.

04

Why distance stopped being a useful filter in a tower district

There is a version of the "near me" search that made perfect sense: a small town, one school, a maths teacher two streets over. Al Taawun is not that. It is a few hundred apartments per building in a district whose children attend schools in two emirates on two or three different curricula.

Run the arithmetic on a home visit here. The tutor approaches on Al Ittihad Road at the hour it is slowest, finds visitor parking that may be full, clears a security desk, and takes a lift in a building with several hundred flats. Fifteen minutes is a good run; forty is ordinary on a Sunday or Monday evening. That time is paid for either as a surcharge or inside an hourly rate, and the market reflects it: in-home one-to-one runs AED 180 to AED 500 an hour against AED 150 to AED 300 for the same tutor online, with Bestimate's Dubai table placing the usual in-home range at AED 180–350.

The erosion is not only financial. A session that starts twenty minutes late either finishes twenty minutes short or pushes the rest of the evening back, and in an exam year the evening has no slack to give. A live-video session starts when it says it starts. The student is at the table with the paper open; the tutor is on screen.

None of which means in-home tutoring is wrong for everyone. A younger child who cannot hold attention on a screen without an adult present is a genuine case for it. A Year 11 or Diploma student who already does all their homework on a laptop is not. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE in any case, and says so here rather than after a booking.

IGCSE to Diploma: the transition that brings most Al Taawun families here

A disproportionate share of tutoring enquiries from this catchment come from one specific moment: a student who did well at IGCSE Extended arriving in Diploma Year 1 and dropping two grades in a term. It is not a mystery and it is not a sign the student has stopped working.

The gap is structural. IGCSE rewards accurate answers to bounded questions. The Diploma rewards justified reasoning on open ones, and it assesses that reasoning explicitly through Internal Assessment criteria and command terms. A student who scored A* on 0580 by being quick and accurate meets Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, where Higher Level Paper 3 is an extended investigation, and finds that speed is not the skill being tested.

The same break appears in the sciences. IGCSE Chemistry asks for the right product; Diploma Chemistry asks why the mechanism proceeds that way, with marks for state symbols, conditions and the reasoning in between. In Biology the command terms do the damage — outline, explain, distinguish and discuss expect different things, and a student answering all four identically settles around a 5 regardless of how well they know the content.

Tutoring that works on this transition spends its first sessions on the assessment architecture rather than the content: what the criteria actually reward, what a 7-standard paragraph looks like against a 5-standard one, and how to plan a Paper 3 investigation. That is a short piece of work done early, and an expensive one done late.

The mandatory UAE subjects nobody mentions in a tutoring search

  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run alongside the licensed curriculum
  • Separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students are required; combined classes are prohibited
  • Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from the five-subject MoE equivalency count
  • Tutoring works through the school's own material for these subjects, not substitute content
  • KHDA's instructional-time rules are built on a 40-minute lesson unit, with a 25-minute minimum advised

A student in Al Taawun is not only doing IGCSE or the Diploma. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run alongside the licensed international curriculum in UAE private schools, and they appear on the report card with everything else. Yet almost no tutoring provider in this market has a section on them, which is why a parent looking for help with Arabic grammar often finds nothing useful.

The requirements are specific. KHDA's mandatory-subject guidelines state that for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language; Social Studies is taught in Arabic for Arab students, and in the school's licensed-curriculum language for non-Arabs. Those rules sit under a federal baseline: private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must follow the Ministry's general regulations.

Two consequences follow for tutoring. First, the stream matters as much as the subject: material written for the first-language Arabic route does not serve a student on the additional-language route, and offering it does more harm than good. Second, content is constrained — for the mandatory subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, so tutoring works through the school's own material rather than substituting its own.

Worth knowing as a credential point too: schools are required to ensure that all teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic have appropriate KHDA approval to teach these subjects. That is a real, checkable standard, and it is the kind of thing a parent can reasonably ask about.

07

The honesty line on coursework, stated before you ask

  • Teaching the criteria and giving feedback on the student's own draft: legitimate
  • Writing, completing or supplying coursework text: never, at any price
  • Reproducing board materials as downloads: a copyright and malpractice exposure
  • Working through an official past paper together with the source cited: legitimate
  • Any grade promise attached to coursework support: a claim nobody can honour

Every family that reaches an Internal Assessment or an Extended Essay eventually meets an offer to make the problem go away. In this market that offer is explicit: one operator in the researched set sells completed Internal Assessments outright. It is worth naming what that actually risks, because the person who carries it is the student.

IB academic-honesty rules treat submitted work that is not the candidate's own as malpractice, and the consequences land on the candidate's diploma, not on the seller's business. A page that is vague about this boundary is being vague deliberately, so here it is plainly: a tutor teaches the skill, explains the published criteria by letter, reads the student's own draft and says where it falls short. A tutor does not write, does not redraft to completion, and does not supply model text for submission.

The same boundary covers materials. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides belong to the IB, Cambridge and Pearson. They are available free through the school and from the boards themselves. A tutor's job is to work through them with the student and cite the source, not to host a download library.

This is a differentiator worth asking about explicitly, because it is the one question an essay mill cannot answer well. Ask a prospective tutor what they will refuse to do. A good tutor has the answer ready, and usually gives you more detail than you asked for.

08

How a match is made when the answer is honest

  • Match on board, code, tier and the loss visible in marked work
  • Slots are held weekly in Gulf Standard Time, including post-commute evening times
  • Thin specialisms get a wait or a different slot, not a substitute
  • Book the exam-season slot early; April availability is not October availability
  • Judge the trial on diagnosis, not on rapport

The least useful thing a tutoring service can say is "we cover everything". Coverage claims are free to make and impossible to check, and they are how families end up with a general science tutor in front of an Additional Mathematics candidate.

A match that means anything starts from three facts: the board and code, the tier or level, and the specific loss visible in the student's last marked paper. With those, the question becomes narrow enough to answer honestly — who teaches this paper, and are they free at a time an Al Taawun student can actually use after the school run or the Dubai commute home.

When the answer is no, there are three honest responses and one dishonest one. The honest ones: a different time with the right specialist, the right specialist teaching over live video from another time zone, or a plain statement that the match is not available this term. The dishonest one is a substitute presented as a match. Availability is also seasonal — the eight weeks before the main exam windows are the busiest hours in this market, and a tutor free in October may not be free in April at 5pm Gulf Standard Time.

The free trial lesson exists to test all of this at no cost. One session, no card, no commitment. The thing to judge it on is narrow: did the tutor identify the specific failure mode and say what the next four sessions will cover? If not, you have spent an hour instead of a term's fees finding out.

Where we tutor

Al Taawun and the districts it shares a tutor pool with

The practical radius of a "near me" search in this part of Sharjah covers the lagoon districts and reaches inland towards University City. These are the neighbourhoods whose families are competing for the same evening slots.

Al Taawun

Tower living on the Al Khan lagoon, minutes from the Al Mamzar crossing. A high share of children attend Dubai schools and return late, which pushes usable session times past 6.30pm on weekdays.

Al Majaz

Immediately south along the same waterfront, sharing much of Al Taawun's school catchment. Northbound evening traffic affects both districts identically, so a tutor serving one serves the other or neither.

Al Khan

Between the lagoon and the aquarium, mixing towers with older villas. Shorter runs to Sharjah-side schools mean a 4.30pm start is realistic here more often than elsewhere in the cluster.

Al Nahda, Sharjah

The dense block on the Dubai border with the highest proportion of Dubai-school families in the emirate. Tutoring here is almost entirely an evening activity, and online delivery removes the second journey.

Al Qasimia

Central Sharjah, close to the older British and Indian curriculum schools. Short commutes but heavy congestion at school gates, and a tutoring demand mixed across CBSE and IGCSE.

University City

Sharjah's higher-education corridor and the reason the emirate's budget tutoring band is genuinely cheaper than Dubai's. It also means more of the local pool are university students, which makes the verification questions on this page worth asking.

Muwaileh

Inland, with several large British and bilingual campuses. Far enough from the lagoon that families who move there usually keep the tutor they already had rather than starting again locally.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Taawun

Lagoon side — Al Taawun, Al Majaz, Al Khan

A mix of British and Indian curriculum schools inside Sharjah, plus a significant outflow to Dubai schools through Al Mamzar. Both Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE appear here, and IB provision in Sharjah is concentrated in a small number of continuum schools.

  • The Westminster School, Sharjah
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Our Own English High School, Sharjah
  • Delta English School
  • Al Maaref Private School
  • ASPAM Indian International School

Inland — Muwaileh, University City, Al Qasimia

Larger campuses with broader subject offers, including the Business and Computer Science options the lagoon-side schools do not always run. Reached from Al Taawun along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road.

  • Scholars International Academy
  • Wesgreen International School
  • International School of Creative Science, Muwaileh
  • Emirates National School, Sharjah
  • Australian International School, Sharjah
  • Sharjah English School

These schools are named to describe the Al Taawun catchment. IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership, endorsement or client relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the last marked paper

Not the report card. A grade says there is a problem; a marked paper shows which marks went and why. Include the school name and the board and code if you have them. Everything useful a tutor can say before being paid comes from that document.

  2. 02

Email the exams officer for board, code and tier

One line: which board does my child sit for each subject, which syllabus code, and which tier. The answer takes a day and changes which tutor is right. It also gets you the zone-correct Cambridge timetable, which is the only version that applies to your centre.

  3. 03

Put the four questions to the tutor

Which board and code; what the hardest component looks like; where marks are lost and how they know; what they will not do with coursework. Five minutes, and it sorts the field better than any credential list. Ask about the MoHRE permit while you are there.

  4. 04

Take the free trial over live video

A one-to-one session at a time that fits the Al Taawun evening, after the school run or the Dubai commute. No payment and no card. Judge it on whether the tutor named the failure mode and said what the next four sessions cover.

  5. 05

Set the review point before the block starts

Agree in writing what each block is meant to fix and when you will look at it. Six weeks later, compare the next marked paper against the first. If the named loss has not moved, the plan changes or the tutor does.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The test is published, not the sales pitch

The four questions on this page work on any tutor, including ours. A page that teaches you how to evaluate tutoring is making a bet that it survives the evaluation, which is a more useful thing to offer an Al Taawun parent than a list of adjectives.

Coverage limits are disclosed

The coverage table names where this pool is thin: Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478, Higher Level Diploma sciences, Theory of Knowledge. No competitor in the researched set discloses a coverage limit at all. Knowing where the gaps are lets you plan a term ahead instead of discovering them in April.

Delivery is stated on the page

Al Taawun students are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Sharjah or anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are an India-only service. You should not have to find that out after a booking.

Matched on code, not on subject

Cambridge 0580 Extended, Pearson 4MA1 Higher and IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level are three different jobs. A tutor is matched to the paper your child sits, which is why the first question we ask is which board the school enters.

No claims you cannot check

No regulator approval, no unevidenced examiner status, no star ratings, no guaranteed grades, no satisfaction percentages. Competitors in this market publish contradictory review figures on the same page. Every number here carries its source and the month it was read.

The coursework line is explicit

Feedback on the student's own work against published criteria, never writing it. That is stated before you ask, because an operator in this market sells finished Internal Assessments and the risk of that falls on the candidate's diploma.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Taawun: your questions answered

Is there actually an IB or IGCSE tutor near me in Al Taawun who knows my child's syllabus?+

For common subjects — IGCSE Maths, the sciences, English — yes, a local pool exists, helped by University City nearby. For specialisms it is much thinner: Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 taught to the syllabus's pseudocode, Higher Level Diploma sciences and Theory of Knowledge are narrow pools anywhere in Sharjah. Restricting the search to people willing to drive to a tower at 5pm narrows it further. The practical answer is to widen the pool rather than the radius: live-video teaching makes the specialist reachable even when nobody nearby teaches that paper.

What should I ask a tutor in the first five minutes to see if they know the course?+

Four things. Which board and syllabus code does my child sit, and what tier? What does the hardest component look like, and what does it reward? Where do students usually lose marks in this subject, and how do you diagnose that from marked work? And what will you refuse to do with my child's Internal Assessment or coursework? A tutor who knows the course asks you the first question before you ask them. Vague answers about confidence and exam nerves are the signal to stop.

Do you send a tutor to apartments in Al Taawun?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Sharjah or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Al Taawun students are taught one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the school run or the return journey from a Dubai school. The gain is not convenience alone. The tutor pool stops being the handful of people who will drive to the lagoon and becomes whoever teaches your child's specific paper properly.

How do I find out which exam board my child's Sharjah school uses?+

Email the school's exams officer and ask for the board, the syllabus code and the tier for each subject. Schools in this catchment enter both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, sometimes different boards for different subjects within the same year group, and a report card showing "Mathematics" tells you none of it. The same email should get you the centre's own timetable, which matters because Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six zones and says it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who used the wrong version.

My child got A* grades at IGCSE and is struggling in Diploma Year 1. What went wrong?+

Usually nothing about effort. IGCSE rewards accurate answers to bounded questions; the Diploma rewards justified reasoning on open ones and assesses that reasoning explicitly through criteria and command terms. A student who scored top grades by being fast and accurate on 0580 meets Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, where Higher Level Paper 3 is an extended investigation, and discovers speed is not the skill being measured. The fix is short if done early: work on the assessment architecture first, content second.

Are tutors in Sharjah legally required to hold a permit?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published. Since the permit costs nothing, a working tutor has no innocent reason not to hold one, so ask.

Can a tutor who lives in another country really teach my child's Sharjah syllabus?+

The syllabus is set by Cambridge, Pearson or the IB, not by the emirate, so a tutor who teaches 4PH1 or Diploma Chemistry at Higher Level teaches the same specification wherever they sit. What has to be local is the operational detail: the school's own assessment calendar, the centre's zone-correct timetable, Gulf Standard Time scheduling, and the mandatory UAE subjects running alongside. Those are things a tutor is briefed on. What cannot be imported is subject depth, which is exactly why widening the pool helps.

What subjects are hardest to find a tutor for in this part of Sharjah?+

Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606, Computer Science 0478 marked against the syllabus's own pseudocode conventions, Accounting 0452, and IGCSE Arabic as a first language. On the Diploma side, Higher Level sciences, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and Theory of Knowledge support. International Baccalaureate students were 7 per cent of Dubai's private-school population in 2024-25 against 37 per cent on UK curricula, which is why DP specialists are a smaller pool across the region. Book these early; April availability is not October availability.

Is a tuition centre in Sharjah better than one-to-one for an IGCSE student?+

A centre is good at broad syllabus revision and genuinely cheaper per hour, at roughly AED 90 to AED 180 in this market. It is poor at individual misconceptions, because the group moves at the syllabus's pace rather than the student's. If your child's problem is that they do not show method on multi-mark questions, a group will not catch it. There is also a logistics cost that rarely gets counted: a centre is a second school run, in the evening, on the roads the first one used.

What does a tutor do about Arabic and Islamic Education alongside the main curriculum?+

First, establish which stream the student is on. KHDA's mandatory-subject guidelines require separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and prohibit combined classes because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Material from one stream does not serve the other. Second, work from the school's own material: for mandatory subjects, using different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is strictly prohibited. These subjects are also excluded from the five-subject equivalency count.

Can a tutor help with my child's Extended Essay or Internal Assessment?+

With the thinking, the structure and the feedback — yes. With the writing — no, at any price. A tutor explains the published criteria by letter, questions the argument, reads the student's own draft and says where it falls short of the descriptors. A tutor does not write it, redraft it to completion, or supply model text for submission. One operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright; the malpractice consequence of that falls on the candidate's diploma, not on the seller.

How quickly can a tutor start for a student in Al Taawun?+

For a common subject at a standard evening time, days. For a thin specialism or a specific slot in exam season, longer, and you should be told so rather than offered a substitute. The sequence is: send the last marked paper, confirm board and code with the school, take a free trial session over live video, then agree a block. Slots are held weekly once agreed. Families who book the exam-season hour in autumn keep it; those who wait for the mocks take what is left.

Should I be worried that a tutor claims to be an examiner?+

Treat it as a claim to evidence, not a credential. Examiner status should not be asserted for an individual whose current position cannot be shown, and it should never be used to suggest access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content, because no legitimate tutor has that. The same applies to regulator approval: SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB and Cambridge do not accredit tutoring platforms in that way, and a KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence issued to institutes with premises.

How do I know after six weeks whether the right tutor was found?+

Look at marked work for the specific loss you started with. Before the block begins, get the failure mode in writing — unshown method on structured questions, missing mark-scheme vocabulary, command terms answered identically. Six weeks later, read the next marked paper or school assessment for that same loss. If it has moved, the match is right. If it has not, change the plan or the tutor. Sessions that feel productive while the same marks keep vanishing are how a term gets spent for nothing.
