IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Mamsha

Families searching for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Mamsha are buying a grade in a specific paper, not general help with a subject. So this page works at paper level: what each component tests, how many minutes a mark is worth, which topics appear where, and the alternative-to-practical paper that quietly costs Sharjah students the most. Al Mamsha is a walkable district beside Muwaileh, and IB Gram teaches these subjects live one-to-one over video rather than visiting UAE homes.

  • Tutors matched to a syllabus code and a tier, not to a year group
  • Timed papers corrected against the published mark scheme, every session
  • The practical and data papers given sessions of their own
  • Free trial lesson that names the marks being lost, by paper

IB & IGCSE in Al Mamsha

Your child sits papers, not subjects

An IGCSE grade is not awarded for knowing Chemistry. It is awarded for marks earned on named papers, each testing a different set of skills, each with its own timing pressure and its own mark scheme conventions. A student can know the subject well and still lose a grade because the paper that tests experimental reasoning was never practised, or because they wrote four minutes of answer for a one-mark question. Those are paper-level problems and they need paper-level work.

Al Mamsha is a walkable mixed-use district in Sharjah, close to Muwaileh and University City, so students here live near schools and no nearer than anyone else to somebody who has marked a Cambridge Paper 4. The constraint across this emirate is not distance but how few people have taught a given syllabus code at a given tier through a full two-year cycle. Those people are not distributed by development, which is why we do not sort tutors by address.

IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE. Home tuition is a service we offer only in India, and every Sharjah lesson is live, one-to-one, over video, in a slot held in Gulf Standard Time. Paper-level work survives that format intact, because what it consists of is a question attempted under timing, a mark scheme opened and an answer corrected phrase by phrase. None of that improves by having somebody in the room.

This page is organised by paper rather than by subject. There is a table of what each component tests across the main subjects, a marks-per-minute table that settles how long an answer should be, a topic-to-paper map for Mathematics, a proper account of the alternative-to-practical paper, and an honest explanation of what grade boundaries are and why nobody can tell you next series' in advance. Verify every syllabus code on your child's statement of entry, because that is the only document that is reliably current.

One correction to make early, because it affects dates families act on. Cambridge International runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two. The February and March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Any page quoting a February exam window to a Sharjah parent has handed them a deadline that belongs to another country, and that error appears more often in these search results than you would expect. Ask the school one more thing while you are checking: which of Cambridge's six administrative zones the centre sits in, because Cambridge states plainly that using the correct timetable for the zone is essential and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after working from the wrong one.

At a glance

  • Cambridge Mathematics is 0580, Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620, Biology 0610
  • Pearson equivalents are 4MA1, 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1, with different tier names
  • UAE Cambridge candidates sit the June and November series; February and March is India only
  • Cambridge allocates each centre to one of six administrative zones; use the correct timetable
  • Grade boundaries are set after each series and cannot be known in advance

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Before paper-level work can start, three facts have to be settled: the board, the code and the tier. All three are decided by the school and all three are routinely unknown to the parent, which is why first sessions elsewhere so often get spent on discovery rather than teaching.

Cambridge IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge International IGCSE

Numeric syllabus codes, tiered as Core and Extended in most subjects, assessed through two to four papers depending on the subject. The sciences include a separate paper on practical skills, which can be taken as a laboratory examination or as the alternative-to-practical written paper.

Most Sharjah centres enter candidates for the alternative-to-practical route rather than a laboratory examination, which matters because that paper is a distinct skill set and is rarely taught as one. Ask the school which practical route your child is entered for. It is a single question and it changes what a third of the science preparation should be.

Pearson EdexcelAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Alphanumeric specification codes, tiered Foundation and Higher where tiering applies, usually across two papers of equal weight. Practical skills are assessed within the written papers rather than through a separate component, and some subjects allow a modular entry pattern.

The modular option changes revision planning substantially against a linear Cambridge course, because peak preparation arrives more than once. Sharjah schools that mix boards across subjects are common, so a single student can be running a linear course in one subject and a modular one in another without anybody having explained the difference.

TierAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

The tier sets the ceiling and the question style. Core and Foundation cap the grade in most subjects and use narrower command terms; Extended and Higher open the full range and set longer, more analytical papers with supplementary content.

Tier is usually decided by the school at the end of Year 9 and communicated through a report rather than a conversation. Ask the subject teacher outright. Paper-level work is impossible without it, because Core and Extended candidates sit different papers and practising the wrong ones is worse than not practising.

ProgressionAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

AS and A Level, and MoE equivalency

IGCSE grades set entry to AS and A Level, where the depth increase is larger than the step into IGCSE was. They also feed the Ministry of Education equivalency requirement for students intending to study in the UAE.

The Ministry's British-track requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. A competitor page in this market publishes six as the subject count, which is wrong. Verify on the Ministry's own channel.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each note names the paper where the marks are actually lost, with the code to confirm on the statement of entry. That is where a session should start rather than at the beginning of the syllabus.

Mathematics (0580 / 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

Two equally weighted papers, no coursework. Extended losses cluster in the multi-topic problems late in each paper, where method marks disappear because working is not shown. Timed practice with the mark scheme open is the only reliable fix.

Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Theory papers plus, for Cambridge, the practical component, usually sat as the alternative-to-practical written paper. That paper is the single largest recoverable loss for Sharjah candidates and almost never gets its own sessions.

Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Moles and stoichiometry carry the heaviest weight and the highest failure rate across both tiers. The qualitative-analysis tables are pure memory, appear reliably, and are usually left unlearned until the final weeks.

Biology (0610 / 4BI1)

Core and Extended

Marks are tied to exact terminology: a loosely correct answer scores zero where the scheme names a term. Revising from notes written in the student's own words is the root cause and revising from mark schemes is the correction.

English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)

Core and Extended

The summary task has strict rules about reformulation and length and is the most trainable component in the subject. Directed writing needs purpose, audience and register addressed explicitly rather than implied.

English First Language (0500)

IGCSE

Reading passages in one paper, directed writing and composition in the other. Analytical marks depend on short precise quotation and comment on effect, which is a technique rather than a vocabulary problem for most bilingual students.

Business Studies (0450 / 4BS1)

IGCSE

Case-study led, with the marks in application and evaluation. Definitions are nearly free and almost never the thing standing between a student and a higher grade; answer structure usually is.

Economics (0455 / 4EC1)

IGCSE

Diagram accuracy is mechanical and heavily weighted: axes labelled, correct shift, new equilibrium identified. Data-response answers must quote the extract, which is a habit drilled in two sessions.

Computer Science (0478)

IGCSE

Pseudocode conventions, trace tables and number-base conversion are mechanical marks thrown away by students who can program well. Theory of computer systems rewards past-paper phrasing over textbook reading.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

IGCSE

Calculus and trigonometry beyond 0580, taken by stronger Sharjah candidates as a bridge to A Level or IB Higher Level mathematics. The clearest early signal of whether a student will cope with that step.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy paper-level work, all online. What separates them is the content of the sessions rather than their length.

One paper at a time

Sessions devoted to a single named component until it stops losing marks. Usually the alternative-to-practical paper in a science, or Paper 4 in Extended Mathematics. Concentrating on one paper feels narrow and produces visible movement because the failing skill gets repeated attention instead of occasional attention.

  • One component per block, named at the start
  • Questions selected from six series rather than one whole paper
  • Mark scheme open during correction
  • Moves on only when the error stops appearing

Timing and answer-length discipline

A short block aimed purely at the marks-per-minute problem: students who write a paragraph for one mark and run out of time for the six-mark question at the end. It is mechanical, unglamorous and one of the largest recoverable losses available in Years 10 and 11.

  • Every answer time-boxed to its mark value
  • Papers attempted in reverse order to expose pacing
  • Explicit rule: one mark, one line
  • Typically four to six sessions, not a year

Content teaching by mark weight

Where topics are genuinely missing, taught in order of how many marks they carry rather than in syllabus order. A student short of time should learn the heavily weighted topic they cannot do before the lightly weighted one they also cannot do, which is obvious and almost never how revision is planned.

  • Topics ordered by weight, not by chapter number
  • Tested immediately with past-paper questions on the same topic
  • Supplementary Extended content given its own sessions
  • Converts to paper technique once the gaps close

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Mamsha

01

What each paper actually tests

Revision planned without knowing what each paper tests produces a student who is well prepared for the component they were already good at. The table below sets out, subject by subject, what the components assess and where marks are lost, which is the information a specialist session should establish in the first ten minutes and which most students reach Year 11 without.

The pattern worth seeing is that the components test genuinely different things rather than the same thing at different lengths. A multiple-choice paper rewards speed and the elimination of distractors. A structured paper rewards precise phrasing against a mark scheme. A practical or data paper rewards experimental reasoning that cannot be revised from notes at all. Treating them as one body of revision is the commonest planning error in this market.

The tier interacts with all of this. Core and Extended candidates sit different papers in most Cambridge subjects, so a student practising the wrong set is not merely under-prepared but prepared for questions they will not see. This is why the tier has to be confirmed from the statement of entry before any paper-level work begins rather than assumed from the textbook in use.

Confirm the structure for your child's specific syllabus and series on the board's own site, because specifications are revised and component patterns change between versions. We are describing the general shape to make the planning argument, not publishing a specification. A provider who presents paper structures as permanent facts has not checked recently.

02

Marks per minute, and how long an answer should be

This is the most mechanical improvement available in the IGCSE years and almost nobody teaches it. Each paper has a total mark and a total time, which gives a rate. A student who does not know their rate will write a paragraph for a one-mark question and then find there are eleven minutes left for the last fifteen marks, which is how able candidates end up with unfinished papers and a grade below their ability.

The rule we teach is blunt because blunt rules survive exam pressure: one mark, one line. Two marks, two distinct points. Six marks, six separate creditable statements, not one idea expressed six ways. Students resist this because it feels like under-answering, and the mark scheme is entirely indifferent to how much was written beyond the points it credits.

The second half of the discipline is pacing against the clock on the page. Work out the halfway mark in minutes and write it on the paper at the start. A student who reaches that point behind can make a deliberate decision about what to abandon, which is a far better outcome than discovering the problem in the final five minutes and panicking through the heaviest questions.

This block takes four to six sessions and does not require knowing any more content. It is also the intervention families are least willing to pay for, because it does not feel like teaching. It is, reliably, worth more marks per hour spent than almost anything else available in Year 11.

03

The alternative-to-practical paper, properly

  • Ask which practical route the centre has entered your child for
  • The paper tests reasoning about experiments, not doing them
  • Human error earns nothing; name the specific source
  • Six to eight dedicated sessions is the usual requirement

Cambridge science candidates sit a practical component, and most Sharjah centres enter students for the alternative-to-practical written paper rather than a laboratory examination. It is the single largest recoverable loss in IGCSE science for students in this emirate, and it is routinely treated as something that will take care of itself because the student does experiments at school.

It will not take care of itself, because the paper does not test whether a student can do an experiment. It tests whether they can reason about one on paper: identify independent, dependent and controlled variables, judge the precision of an instrument, read and construct graphs with correct scales and best-fit lines, identify specific sources of error rather than general ones, and suggest improvements that address those specific errors.

Those are learnable, discrete skills with highly predictable mark scheme phrasing, and six to eight dedicated sessions typically move a student from guessing to competent. The mistake is to fold this paper into general revision, where it receives a tenth of the attention it needs and the student continues to write human error as a source of error, which earns nothing in any series.

Ask the school which practical route your child is entered for. If it is the alternative-to-practical paper, give it its own sessions. If it is a laboratory examination, the preparation is different again and needs the school's own equipment list. Either way it is one question to the school and it changes what a third of the science preparation should contain.

04

Topic to paper, using Mathematics as the worked example

Students revise topics and sit papers, and the mapping between the two is rarely made explicit. The table below does it for Mathematics, which is the subject most Al Mamsha families ask about, and the same exercise is worth doing with your child for every subject because it immediately shows where revision time should go.

Two things usually become visible when the mapping is drawn. First, that several topics the student finds comfortable carry relatively few marks, while the ones they avoid carry many. Second, that the supplementary Extended content concentrates in the harder questions late in each paper, which is exactly where the student was already running out of time. Those two facts together explain most unexpected Mathematics grades.

The practical use of the mapping is to order revision by weight rather than by chapter. A student with eight weeks should spend the first three on the heavily weighted topics they cannot do, not on working through the textbook from page one. This sounds obvious written down and is almost never what happens, because revision follows the order material was taught in.

Draw the same map for the sciences and it reveals the practical paper sitting there carrying a substantial share of the grade and receiving almost no preparation. That is the single most common finding when we do this exercise with a Sharjah family in Year 11, and it is also the easiest to fix. Do the mapping on one sheet of paper with your child rather than for them, because the point is partly that they see it. A student who has worked out for themselves that a topic they avoid carries three times the marks of a topic they enjoy will revise differently without being told to.

05

Grade boundaries, and why nobody can tell you next series'

  • Boundaries are set after each series, for that series
  • Nobody can publish next series' boundary; treat any such figure with suspicion
  • Mechanical marks are the cheapest route towards a boundary
  • We do not distribute official papers, schemes or boundary tables

Parents reasonably ask what mark is needed for an A, and the honest answer is that nobody knows until after the papers are sat. Boundaries are set by the awarding body for each series, after the papers have been marked, to account for how difficult that particular paper turned out to be. A provider quoting a fixed boundary for a future series is either guessing or repeating an old figure as though it were current.

What is useful is the shape of the thing rather than the number. Boundaries move between series and between subjects, sometimes by several marks, which has two consequences for planning. A student sitting a few marks under a boundary in a mock might be above it in a real series, or further below. And the marks closest to any boundary are the mechanical ones: method shown, units given, terminology precise, the last question attempted at all.

This is why we push timing discipline and method marks so hard rather than chasing additional content. A student who recovers five mechanical marks a paper has moved further towards a boundary than one who learns an extra topic they may or may not be asked about. Mechanical marks are available in every question on every paper, which is a much better bet than any single topic.

We also do not reproduce or supply grade-boundary tables, past papers or mark schemes as downloads. Those are Cambridge and Pearson materials and reproducing them is a copyright matter. We reference them, teach from them in session and point to the official source so you can obtain what you need through your school.

06

The three sciences compared, because they are not one subject

Families routinely ask for a science tutor and are surprised that we will not supply one person for all three. Physics, Chemistry and Biology fail in different places, demand different habits and reward different revision, and a tutor strong in one is usually ordinary in the others. The distinction is practical rather than territorial.

Physics loses marks in written explanation, where a correct idea phrased loosely earns nothing because the mark scheme names a chain of cause and effect. The remedy is to collect standard explanations from mark schemes and learn the phrasing until it is automatic. It is memorisation of wording, which is not what most people expect physics revision to involve.

Chemistry loses marks cumulatively and quantitatively. Moles and stoichiometry carry the heaviest weight and the highest failure rate, and a weakness there damages every subsequent topic. The qualitative-analysis tables, by contrast, are pure recall, appear reliably and are usually left unlearned, which makes them among the cheapest marks in the whole examination.

Biology loses marks terminologically. The mark scheme frequently names the exact word required, and the student who revised from their own notes writes their own words. Revising from mark schemes rather than notes is the correction, and it is the single most effective change a Biology candidate can make. Three subjects, three different problems, three different tutors.

There is a budget consequence worth stating. Three specialists cost more than one generalist, and most households cannot fund three weekly hours. The sensible structure is to take the science that is doing the most damage, work it properly for a term, and leave the others to school. One science moved from a 5 to a 7 is worth more than three sciences nudged by half a grade, and it is the only version of this plan that is affordable.

What paper-level work costs in Sharjah

Specialist knowledge of a paper is priced at the top of the market and it is worth knowing where the bands sit. Read in October 2026, a qualified subject tutor online sits at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. An IGCSE specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table in the same range.

The budget band of roughly AED 33 to 65, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, is supplied largely by university students, and University City adjoins Al Mamsha. For Year 9 consolidation that is often the right purchase and we will say so. For six dedicated sessions on the alternative-to-practical paper it is not, because what you are buying is somebody who knows what that paper's mark scheme credits.

The useful way to cost this work is per block rather than per hour, because paper-level interventions are short. Six sessions on one component at the qualified band is roughly AED 900 to 1,800; at the specialist band, roughly AED 1,200 to 2,700. Compare that with Bestimate's monthly estimate of AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support, and the short targeted block starts to look like the better-value purchase it usually is.

In-home visits sit at AED 180 to 350 on Bestimate's table and AED 200 to 500 with independent tutors. For this kind of work the travel premium buys nothing at all, because a timed attempt, an open mark scheme and a line-by-line correction work identically on a shared screen. Every figure is published by the provider named; none is an IB Gram price, and for ours take the free trial and ask.

Coursework, practical write-ups and the line a tutor holds

  • Teaching, mark-scheme explanation and feedback on the student's own draft: yes
  • Writing, completing or finishing assessed work: never
  • Demonstration on a different question, not on the student's own task
  • A tutor who also marks your child's school work: no

Some IGCSE subjects carry school-assessed components, and this market contains providers who will simply produce them. One page in this research advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. For a Sharjah student, submitting purchased work converts a grade worry into a malpractice finding against the qualification, which is not recoverable by resitting anything.

The boundary, plainly. A tutor may teach the skills the task requires, explain how the mark scheme awards them, model the approach on a different example, read a draft the student has written and say where it is unclear, unsupported or off-brief, and teach referencing, data handling and experimental write-up conventions properly.

A tutor may not write, rewrite, complete or edit the work to a finished state, and may not produce a worked version of the student's own task. This matters more rather than less in paper-level tutoring, because the work is close to the mark scheme and the temptation to demonstrate by doing is real. Demonstration happens on a different question, never on the student's own.

One further rule concerns teachers. ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Treat the ADEK wording as press-reported and verify it against the current policy document. We will not arrange it either way.

The last boundary is about materials. We do not reproduce or supply Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads; we reference them, teach from them within a session and link the official source. If a provider offers you a bundle of official papers and mark schemes to keep, that tells you what else they consider negotiable.

09

Starting at paper level from Al Mamsha

  • Statement of entry, one marked paper, and the practical route for sciences
  • Ask the trial tutor a mark-scheme question directly
  • Expect a written list of marks lost, by paper and operation
  • Review the list at four weeks; items should have disappeared

Three documents before you contact anybody. The statement of entry, which gives the board, the code and the tier for every subject. One recent marked paper, ideally a mock. And, for a science, the answer to one question put to the school: which practical route is my child entered for. With those, a specialist can be specific in the first hour.

In the trial lesson, ask the tutor which component carries the practical skills in your child's subject and what the mark scheme accepts as a source of error. A specialist answers immediately and precisely. A general tutor talks about building confidence. That single exchange sorts the market faster than any credential, and asking it costs you nothing at all.

Expect the trial to end with a written list rather than an impression: the specific marks being lost, named by paper and by operation. Method marks on late multi-topic questions. Human error written where a named source was required. Paragraph answers to one-mark questions. Everything afterwards aims at that list, and the list is how you judge whether the work is landing.

Then review at four weeks. Items should be gone from the list. If the list is unchanged, the diagnosis was wrong and we change the plan or the specialist rather than running the term on it. Ask any provider what their answer to that is before you pay them, and notice whether they have one ready. It is the obvious question, the honest answer costs a serious provider nothing, and the hesitation is itself the information you were looking for.

Where we tutor

Al Mamsha and the districts that share its schools

Neighbouring Sharjah districts with the same school access. The notes record what each offers a family wanting paper-level support, which is largely the same answer.

Al Mamsha

Walkable development with apartments above retail, beside Muwaileh. Strong school access by Sharjah standards and no local supply of Extended-tier subject specialists, which is the ordinary position across the emirate.

Muwaileh

The adjacent school cluster. Full of teachers who are at work during the hours a tutor is wanted, which is why proximity to a school cluster is not proximity to available expertise.

University City

Next door, and the origin of the budget band at roughly AED 33 to 65 an hour. Useful for lower-secondary consolidation and thin on anyone who has marked an Extended Paper 4.

Al Zahia

Master-planned community nearby with similar school access. The same subjects come up, and the alternative-to-practical paper is just as neglected there as everywhere else.

Aljada

Newer mixed-use district with a younger cohort, so the paper-level questions skew towards Year 9 preparation rather than Year 11 rescue.

Al Nouf

Inland residential Sharjah with a longer school run. The paper work is identical; only the hour at which a session can realistically start is different, and it is later.

Sharjah Garden City

Inland and residential, car-dependent, with no tutoring provision inside the district. A useful reminder that the supply problem is emirate-wide rather than local.

Tilal City

Still developing, with limited provision of any kind. For Computer Science 0478 or Additional Mathematics 0606 the nearest specialist is realistically nowhere nearby.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the board, the code and the tier

From the statement of entry, not the textbook. Cambridge 0625 Extended and Pearson 4PH1 are different matches with different papers, and a student practising the wrong paper set is not under-prepared but prepared for questions they will not meet.

  2. 02

    Confirm the practical route

For any science, ask the school whether your child is entered for the alternative-to-practical written paper or a laboratory examination. It is one question, the school answers it immediately, and it changes what roughly a third of the science preparation should consist of.

  3. 03

A free trial that names the losses

The tutor sets a question under timing, marks it against the mark scheme and produces a written list of the specific operations being failed, by paper. Nothing is paid before the trial, and the list is useful whatever you do next with it.

  4. 04

    One component at a time

Sessions concentrate on a single named paper until the error stops appearing, with questions drawn from several series rather than working through whole papers. Narrow focus feels slow and produces the fastest visible movement, which is counter-intuitive and consistent.

  5. 05

    Four-week review against the list

Items should be disappearing. If they are not, the week-one diagnosis was wrong and we change the plan or the specialist straight away, because running a term on a wrong diagnosis is the one failure that cannot be corrected at the end.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We work at paper level

A grade is awarded for marks on named components, and the components test different things. Sorting revision by paper rather than by subject is what reveals that the practical paper carries a substantial share of a science grade and is receiving almost no preparation.

The practical paper gets its own sessions

The alternative-to-practical paper is the largest recoverable loss in IGCSE science for Sharjah candidates, and it is almost always folded into general revision where it receives a tenth of the attention it needs. Six to eight dedicated sessions typically change it.

We teach timing as a discipline

One mark, one line. Six marks, six separate creditable statements. The halfway time written on the paper before starting. It is mechanical, it requires no new content, and it is worth more marks per hour than almost anything else available in Year 11.

Honest about grade boundaries

Boundaries are set after each series for that series, and nobody can publish next series' in advance. Anyone quoting a fixed boundary is guessing or repeating a stale figure, and chasing mechanical marks is a better bet than chasing a number.

Codes, not year groups

Tutors are matched to a syllabus code and a tier because that is what decides which papers a student sits. Schools change board more readily than they replace their resources, which is why we read the statement of entry rather than the textbook cover.

Nothing official distributed

We do not supply Cambridge or Pearson past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or syllabus documents as downloads. We reference them, teach from them in session and link the official source, because reproducing them is a copyright matter rather than a judgement call.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Mamsha: your questions answered

Which IGCSE paper costs Sharjah science candidates the most marks?+

The practical component, and for most centres that means the alternative-to-practical written paper. It does not test whether a student can perform an experiment; it tests whether they can reason about one on paper, naming variables, judging precision, constructing graphs and identifying specific sources of error. Writing human error earns nothing in any series. The skills are discrete and the mark scheme phrasing is predictable, so six to eight dedicated sessions usually move a student from guessing to competent. Almost nobody gives it separate sessions.

How long should my child's answer be for a six-mark question?+

Six separate creditable statements, causally linked where the command term requires it, in roughly four to five minutes. Not one idea expressed at length, which is what most students write. The rule we drill is deliberately blunt because blunt rules survive exam pressure: one mark, one line; two marks, two distinct points. Students resist it because short answers feel like under-answering, and the mark scheme is completely indifferent to anything written beyond the points it credits.

What mark does my child need for an A in IGCSE?+

Nobody knows until after the series is marked, and a provider who gives you a figure is guessing or quoting a stale one. Grade boundaries are set by the awarding body for each series, after marking, to account for how difficult that paper proved. They move between series and between subjects, sometimes by several marks. The planning consequence is useful though: the marks nearest any boundary are mechanical ones, so method shown, units given, precise terminology and attempting the final question are the cheapest route upward.

Can one tutor cover Physics, Chemistry and Biology?+

They can and we will not arrange it, because the three fail in different places and need different habits. Physics loses marks in written explanation and needs mark-scheme phrasing learned verbatim. Chemistry loses them cumulatively in moles and stoichiometry. Biology loses them to imprecise terminology, and the fix is revising from mark schemes rather than from notes. A tutor strong in one of the three is usually ordinary in the others, and in the term before a series that difference is expensive.

Which practical route is my child entered for?+

Ask the school, because it is their entry decision and they will answer immediately. Cambridge science candidates sit a practical component which can be a laboratory examination or the alternative-to-practical written paper, and most Sharjah centres use the written route. The preparation differs completely between them: the written paper needs reasoning practice on past questions, while a laboratory examination needs familiarity with specific apparatus and procedures from the school's own equipment list. It is one question and it shapes a third of the science plan.

How do we know whether the problem is content or technique?+

Look at a marked paper rather than at the grade. If the student starts every question and loses marks in parts c and d, in method shown, in terminology and in the final unfinished question, that is technique and it responds quickly. If they cannot begin questions on particular topics, that is missing content and no amount of timed practice will supply it. A trial lesson on a real question, marked against the scheme, will tell you which within the hour, and the two need opposite plans.

Why do the sciences need sessions on terminology?+

Because the mark scheme frequently names the exact word, especially in Biology, and an answer that is loosely correct earns nothing. The mechanism behind most under-performance is that students revise from notes written in their own words and then produce those words under examination conditions. The correction is to revise from mark schemes: read what the scheme credits, learn that phrasing, and use it. It feels like rote learning, it is unglamorous, and it moves Biology grades more reliably than any other single change.

Does working through whole past papers help?+

In the last fortnight, yes, because what you are then practising is stamina and pacing. Before that it is inefficient. A student losing marks on data interpretation should do the data questions from six papers rather than six whole papers, which concentrates correction on the failing operation instead of spreading it thinly. Then redo the same question type from scratch, which is the step almost everyone skips and the step that turns a correction into a habit that survives pressure.

How much does a six-session block on one paper cost?+

At published October 2026 rates, roughly AED 900 to 1,800 at the qualified online band of AED 150 to 300 an hour, and roughly AED 1,200 to 2,700 at the specialist band of AED 200 to 450 and above. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and TutorChase quotes AED 270. Compare that against Bestimate's monthly estimate of AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support, and a short targeted block is usually the better-value purchase.

Is the February IGCSE series available to students in Sharjah?+

No. Cambridge's February and March series is offered to India only. UAE candidates sit the June series and the November series, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. This matters because several pages ranking for these searches quote February dates and autumn deadlines to Gulf families, which is a date a parent books around and loses an entry over. Also ask your school which of Cambridge's six administrative zones it sits in, because the zone timetable is the one that applies.

My child writes too much and runs out of time. Is that fixable?+

Yes, and it is one of the quickest fixes available because it requires no new content. Four to six sessions on answer-length discipline and pacing typically resolve it. The method is mechanical: time-box every answer to its mark value, write the halfway time on the paper before starting, and attempt a paper in reverse order occasionally to expose where the pacing collapses. Families are least willing to pay for this work because it does not feel like teaching, and it is worth more marks per hour than most alternatives.

Should revision follow the textbook order?+

No, and following it is one of the commonest planning errors. Revision should be ordered by mark weight: the heavily weighted topic the student cannot do comes before the lightly weighted topic they also cannot do. Textbook order reflects the sequence material was taught in, which has nothing to do with where the marks are. Map your child's topics against where they appear in the papers and how much they carry, and the right order usually becomes obvious in twenty minutes.

Can a tutor help with an IGCSE practical write-up for assessment?+

They can teach the conventions, explain how the mark scheme credits them, demonstrate on a different experiment and read what your child has written to say where it is unclear or unsupported. They cannot write it, rewrite it, complete it or edit it to a finished state, and cannot produce a worked version of your child's own task. The temptation to demonstrate by doing is real in paper-level work, which is why demonstration always happens on a different question.

Should a Sharjah student add Additional Mathematics 0606 to their subject list?+

If your child is heading towards A Level Mathematics or IB Higher Level mathematics, it is the most useful signal available. It covers calculus and trigonometry beyond the 0580 syllabus, so coping with 0606 suggests the next step is realistic and struggling with it is information worth having in Year 11 rather than in the second term of a Diploma. Take it even where the school presents it as optional. Be aware that the local specialist pool for 0606 is thin, so allow longer to match a tutor.

What single question should I ask a prospective IGCSE tutor?+

How many full two-year cycles have you taught of this exact syllabus code at this exact tier. It is specific, checkable and sorts the market quickly. A tutor who answers with a degree, with years of general experience or with rapport has not answered it. Follow it with a mark-scheme question in your child's subject, such as what the scheme accepts as a source of error, and with two practical ones: do they hold a MoHRE private tuition work permit, and what happens if the match is wrong in week two.

Send the statement of entry and a marked paper

If you are looking for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Mamsha, the useful first step is paperwork rather than conversation. Find the statement of entry and note the board, the syllabus code and the tier for each subject in difficulty. Pull out one recent marked paper, ideally a mock. For any science, ask the school one question: which practical route is my child entered for. Send us those three things and we will match a specialist to the exact code and tier, and the free trial lesson will produce a written list of the marks being lost, named by paper and by operation. Sessions then target that list. Lessons are live, one-to-one and online.
