IB Home Tutor in Mina Al Arab

Most pages selling an IB home tutor in Mina Al Arab describe the service. This one describes the syllabus, because that is what a Diploma student in Ras Al Khaimah actually needs help with: which paper carries which weighting, what an examiner means by evaluate rather than describe, which Internal Assessment criterion loses the most marks, and how a past paper should be worked. IB Gram teaches Mina Al Arab students one-to-one over live video, with the student's own marked script on screen.

  • Higher and Standard Level Diploma subjects taught by specialists in each
  • Internal Assessment criteria named by letter, with their mark allocations
  • Past-paper work marked to published criteria, not to a tutor's impression

IB & IGCSE in Mina Al Arab

Where Diploma marks actually go missing, and why it is rarely the topic a parent names

A parent in Mina Al Arab who asks for help with Chemistry is usually right that something is wrong and usually wrong about what. The named problem is a topic. The actual problem, in the overwhelming majority of marked scripts, is one of four things: a command term misread, a conclusion that does not follow from the data presented, working omitted on a question where method marks were available, or an answer that was correct in substance and not in the language the criteria pay for. None of those is fixed by re-teaching a topic.

That is why this page is written from the assessment rather than from the service. A Diploma subject is a defined set of components with published weightings, assessed against published criteria, with command terms that have specified meanings. All of that is readable in advance. A student who has read it is competing on different terms from one who has not, and most students have not, because nobody sat down with them and the subject guide in the first year. The subject guide your school holds is the authoritative document, and almost no family has opened it.

Take the simplest example. A question beginning explain requires a causal link; one beginning describe does not; one beginning evaluate requires a judgement supported by both sides. A student who answers all three the same way will lose the same marks in every paper in every subject for two years. It is a two-session fix with a mark scheme open, and it is worth more than a term of content revision. Of the competitor pages researched for these UAE searches, none sets out a single command term or a single assessment criterion.

The Internal Assessment is the second large reservoir of recoverable marks. Every Diploma subject has one, each is marked against lettered criteria with stated maximum marks, and the moderation process is conservative. Students who choose a question too broad to control, collect data before thinking about the analysis, or write first and read the criteria afterwards produce work that reads perfectly well and scores in the middle. Narrowing a research question is the single highest-value hour a Diploma tutor can spend. It is also the part of the Diploma a tutor can help with soonest, because the planning stage has no deadline pressure attached to it yet.

A word on how this is delivered, because the URL says home tutor. IB Gram teaches Mina Al Arab students one-to-one over live video, on a shared screen, on Gulf Standard Time. We do not place a tutor at a UAE address, and in-person visiting is a service we run only in India. For syllabus work that format is genuinely better rather than merely acceptable: the student's own script, the published criteria and the mark scheme can all be open at once, annotated by both people, and the annotations survive the session.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three IB programmes are relevant to a Mina Al Arab household, and the assessment logic changes at each step. Here is what each one measures and the skill it leaves underdeveloped.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-school to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led with no external examinations, reported against learning outcomes and finishing with an Exhibition. The strengths it builds are question-forming and collaboration; the gap it leaves is written fluency under time constraint. Tutoring at this stage, where it is needed at all, is about reading speed, number fact recall and sustained independent working rather than about any curriculum content.

Mina Al Arab families with primary-age children generally have short school runs along the coast road. The useful question at this stage is whether the child can read a question, plan an answer and finish it unaided, because the Middle Years Programme assumes all three from Year 7.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Assessed against criteria A to D with published descriptors, plus a Personal Project in the final year. Criterion-based assessment is excellent training for the Diploma's internal components and poor training for its written papers, because almost nothing in the Middle Years Programme is a timed external examination. The Personal Project is the first real experience of a self-scoped task with a distant deadline.

Where a student moves between a Middle Years school and an IGCSE school on this coast, topic sequencing differs and genuine content gaps open in maths and science. Those gaps are findable in a single diagnostic session and generally closeable over a summer.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, usually three at Higher Level, scored out of 45. Each subject carries written papers with published weightings and an internally assessed component marked against lettered criteria. The core adds Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay at a 4,000-word limit, and Creativity, Activity, Service. Higher Level courses carry additional topics and, in several subjects, an extra paper.

UAE schools sit the May session, with November available where a school offers it. This page publishes no specific IB examination or results date, since the IB's own site cannot be checked automatically; the coordinator's internal deadline sheet is the calendar a plan should follow.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Subject by subject, here is the component that decides the grade and the specific place marks are lost. This is the level of detail a parent should expect from anyone claiming to be a Diploma specialist.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms carry the most lost marks at Higher Level. Calculation questions usually fail on units and significant figures rather than on method. In the Internal Assessment, the commonest loss is an investigation with one poorly controlled variable, which caps the analysis and evaluation criteria no matter how careful the write-up.

Physics

HL and SL

Fields and circular motion are the content separators; uncertainty propagation is the technical one. Students lose marks by quoting a result to more figures than the data supports and by describing a method without identifying control variables. Both appear in the papers and in the Internal Assessment, which makes them double-value work.

Biology

HL and SL

Terminology precision is what the mark scheme pays for: active transport against a concentration gradient, not simply movement. Extended-response questions reward structure over volume. In the Internal Assessment, an ambitious question with uncontrollable variation scores lower than a narrow one executed cleanly, every time.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic speed decides the Higher Level grade more than any single topic. Marks are lost by omitting working on multi-step questions where method marks exist, and by answers left in a form the question did not ask for. The Exploration needs genuine mathematics rather than an application with mathematics attached.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics and modelling, with heavy legitimate use of technology. The recurring loss is interpretation: a correct calculation followed by no statement of what it means in context. Examiners reward the sentence that answers the question, and students routinely stop one line too early.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Analysis of how a text works on a reader, across literary and non-literary material, with an Individual Oral recorded in a school window. Marks are lost to description of content rather than discussion of technique and effect, and to essays that assert without quoting. At Higher Level the additional essay carries its own internal deadlines.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy decides the analysis marks: an unlabelled axis or a curve shifted the wrong way loses them regardless of the prose. The top band requires evaluation that weighs competing effects and reaches a supported judgement. Internally assessed commentary work is spread across the course and needs scheduling.

Business Management

HL and SL

The discipline is selecting one correct tool and applying it to the stimulus, not listing several. Marks are lost to general commentary about a company where the question asked for application to the data provided. Higher Level candidates meet a research-based component with its own word limit and criteria.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Systems thinking and terminology carry more weight than students expect from a subject often chosen as a dual option. The recurring loss is a general example offered where a named case study was required, which is a habit rather than a knowledge gap and takes about two sessions to correct.

Theory of Knowledge

Core component

An essay on a prescribed title plus an exhibition, both assessed against published criteria. Students lose marks by writing about knowledge in general rather than answering the title, and by offering examples that illustrate nothing in particular. The teachable skill is building an argument that a counter-position could actually challenge.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Syllabus work comes in three shapes, and the right one is determined by whether the problem is content, component or technique.

Subject teaching, weekly

One or two hours a week on the syllabus itself, sequenced from the school's scheme of work and running slightly ahead of it. Suited to a genuine content gap at Higher Level, where the additional topics are the usual culprits. Judged on the student's own performance in timed questions on those topics, not on how the sessions felt.

  • Topic order taken from the subject guide and the school's sequence
  • Each topic closed with timed questions marked to the scheme
  • Written list of remaining gaps after every fourth session

Component coaching

Short blocks on an Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay or the Theory of Knowledge essay. The work is criteria literacy, question narrowing and feedback on the student's own draft. The tutor asks questions and points out where a conclusion is unsupported; the student writes every word of it.

  • Criteria read letter by letter with their mark allocations
  • Research question narrowed until genuinely controllable
  • Written feedback on the student's draft, never a rewrite

Technique and past-paper work

The format for a student whose understanding is sound and whose marks are not. Timed sections, marked against the published scheme, with command terms and mark-scheme language as the explicit subject of the session. Usually the fastest-moving block of the three and often the only one needed.

  • Command-term drill against real question stems
  • Marks tracked by question type rather than by total
  • A stop rule for questions that consume disproportionate time

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Mina Al Arab

01

Diploma assessment structure, and where the weight sits

Before any teaching, a student should be able to say what each component of their subject is worth. Surprisingly few can, and the consequence is predictable: effort distributed by preference rather than by weighting. A student who enjoys practical work and dislikes extended writing will happily spend twenty hours on an investigation worth a fifth of the grade and four on the paper worth nearly half of it.

The exact weightings differ by subject and by level, and the authoritative source is the subject guide your school holds, so the right move is to read that rather than a summary. What generalises is the shape. There are externally assessed written papers carrying the large majority of the marks, and one internally assessed component carrying a meaningful minority. Higher Level courses typically add an extra paper or an extended component, which is where the difference in workload between Higher and Standard Level actually appears.

The planning consequence is straightforward arithmetic. If a component is worth a fifth of a subject and a student is losing a third of its available marks, that is a recoverable chunk of the subject grade sitting in one place, usually fixable with criteria work rather than content teaching. If the same student is losing a tenth of the marks across the written papers, the recovery is larger in absolute terms but slower, because paper performance moves with technique and volume rather than with a single intervention.

The table below sets out the generic structure with the specific failure modes attached to each part. It is deliberately not a weightings table, because publishing per-subject percentages from memory would be exactly the kind of unsourced precision this project avoids. Take the numbers from the subject guide; take the failure modes from here.

02

Command terms, and the marks they quietly decide

IB questions are built on command terms with specified meanings, and the mark scheme pays for the thing the term demands rather than for everything the student knows. This is the most reliable source of recoverable marks in the entire Diploma, and it is invisible on a report card because it shows up as consistent underperformance rather than as a named weakness.

The pattern in a marked script is distinctive. The student scores well on recall questions, loses marks on extended responses, and the comments say things like needs more depth or did not answer the question. What has actually happened is a mismatch: the question asked for a judgement and received a description, or asked for a causal mechanism and received a list. The content was there; the required operation was not performed.

Correcting it is fast, because it is a reading habit rather than knowledge. The exercise is to take twenty real question stems from past papers across the student's subjects, identify the command term in each, say aloud what the answer must therefore contain, and only then write one. Two sessions of that changes how a student reads every paper they sit afterwards, in every subject, for the rest of the Diploma.

The table below covers the terms that cause the most trouble. It is worth noting what is not in it: terms whose meanings students usually get right, such as state and calculate. The problem is concentrated in the middle band, where the terms look like synonyms and are not.

COMMAND TERMS THAT COST THE MOST MARKS
Command termWhat the examiner requiresWhat students usually write insteadMark consequence
DescribeAn accurate account of features or a processAn explanation nobody asked for, costing timeTime lost rather than marks
ExplainReasons or causes, with the mechanism made explicitA description of what happensThe causal marks are not awarded

SuggestA plausible answer, with reasoning, where more than one existsA single answer stated with no reasoningReasoning marks lost
JustifyEvidence or reasons supporting a stated conclusionThe conclusion restated more firmlyNo marks for restatement
03

The Internal Assessment, criterion by criterion

Every Diploma subject carries an internally assessed component marked by the school against the IB's published criteria and then moderated. The criteria are lettered, each carries a stated maximum, and together they are a substantial share of the subject grade. A student who writes against the criteria is working with information. A student who writes a good piece of work and hopes it fits is gambling, and the moderation process is not generous to gamblers.

This is the single widest uncontested gap in this search market. Across the competitor pages researched for the UAE clusters, not one names a single assessment criterion by letter with its mark allocation. Parents are told Internal Assessment support is offered; nobody tells them what the work is marked on, which means families cannot distinguish a tutor who knows the component from one who has heard of it. Ask a prospective tutor to name the criteria for your child's subject. The answer settles it.

The sequence that works is counterintuitive to most students. Read the criteria first and translate each into a question the finished piece must answer. Then narrow the research question until the investigation is genuinely controllable with the equipment, the time and the sample available. Then collect. Only then write. Students who write first and map to the criteria afterwards produce work that reads well and lands mid-range, and no amount of editing afterwards recovers the structural marks.

The boundary needs stating because this market needs it stated. A tutor may explain the criteria, ask questions about the plan, point out where a conclusion exceeds the data, and give feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor may not write a section, rewrite prose, supply data or edit to completion. Nobody at IB Gram will. A site currently ranking on these searches advertises completed Internal Assessments for sale at a published price; that is an academic-honesty breach whose consequences fall on the student rather than on the seller.

Chemistry at Higher Level: the three places the grade is decided

Higher Level Chemistry rewards three things disproportionately, and a student who is solid in all three rarely has a grade problem. The first is calculation discipline. Mole arithmetic, concentration, yields and energetics all involve multi-step work where units and significant figures carry marks of their own. Students lose these marks while understanding the chemistry perfectly, which is maddening and entirely fixable.

The second is equilibrium and energetics as a conceptual pair. Questions here ask for reasoning about why a system responds as it does, which means the command term is almost always explain or predict rather than state. A student who has memorised the direction a system shifts without the reasoning will answer correctly and score partially, because the mark scheme pays for the mechanism.

The third is organic chemistry, which is best treated as pattern recognition rather than memorisation. Once a student can read a functional group and predict a reaction type with a reason, the subject becomes considerably smaller than it looks. Students who attempt to memorise reactions individually find the volume overwhelming and never reach the point where the patterns do the work for them.

The Internal Assessment in Chemistry has its own characteristic failure, and it is a planning one. An investigation with an uncontrolled variable - temperature drift, concentration prepared imprecisely, a timing method with large human error - caps the analysis and evaluation criteria however carefully the write-up is produced. The fix is an hour spent on the method before anything is measured, which is why Internal Assessment coaching belongs in the first Diploma year rather than in the second.

05

Physics, uncertainty, and the marks nobody mentions

  • Uncertainty propagation carries marks in both papers and the Internal Assessment
  • Significant figures beyond the data's precision lose marks on their own
  • Revise Higher Level additional topics first, not last
  • Method questions are marked on repeatability, not on plausibility
  • Error bars and gradient consistency are procedural skills, learnable in weeks

Physics at Diploma level contains a technical skill that barely appears at IGCSE and carries marks in every part of the course: handling uncertainty. Propagating an uncertainty through a calculation, quoting a result to a defensible number of figures, drawing error bars, judging whether a gradient is consistent with a prediction. A student who cannot do these things loses marks in the written papers and in the Internal Assessment simultaneously.

That double exposure makes it unusually good value for tutoring. Six focused sessions on uncertainty and data handling will show up in two separate places in the grade, which is rarely true of a content topic. It is also a skill that can be taught cleanly, because it is procedural: there are rules, they are learnable, and practice on real data makes them automatic.

The content separators are different. Fields, circular motion and the Higher Level additional topics carry the heaviest losses, partly because they are conceptually demanding and partly because they are taught late and therefore revised least. A revision plan that starts at the beginning of the syllabus and works forwards will reach them exhausted. Starting with the Higher Level material and working backwards is usually the better sequence.

The third recurring loss is method description. A question asking how an experiment would be carried out is marked on precision: what is varied, what is controlled, what is measured and how, with enough detail that someone else could repeat it. Students write a summary and lose marks they would never lose in conversation, because they know the answer and do not know that the answer has to be specified.

06

Mathematics: the Exploration, and the paper skills it does not build

The mathematics Exploration is the subject's internally assessed component, and it is the piece of Diploma work most often misunderstood. It asks for the student's own mathematics on a topic of their choice, marked against lettered criteria. The characteristic failure is choosing an application and attaching mathematics to it rather than choosing mathematics and finding an application, which produces a readable document with insufficient mathematical content to score in the upper bands.

A second failure is scope. An Exploration that attempts a large question needs more mathematics than a student at this level can deploy properly, and the write-up thins out exactly where the criteria want depth. A narrow question explored thoroughly, with the student's own working visible and reflected upon, scores better than an ambitious one surveyed. Narrowing is therefore the first and most valuable conversation.

What the Exploration does not build is paper technique, and the two are easy to confuse because both say mathematics. Paper performance at Higher Level turns on algebraic speed, on showing method where method marks exist, and on answering in the form the question requested. A student can produce an excellent Exploration and still lose a grade on the papers, which is why a plan should treat them as two separate pieces of work with two separate blocks.

The route question sits underneath all of this. Analysis and Approaches is algebra-heavy and proof-oriented; Applications and Interpretation is statistics-led and technology-heavy. Both are rigorous and neither is the soft option. Where a student has arrived in the wrong one, the decision is far easier early in the first Diploma year than later, and a diagnostic block with a specialist is a cheap way to make it on evidence rather than on impression.

07

Past-paper work, done so that it actually teaches something

Most students do past papers and most past-paper practice is wasted. The waste has a consistent shape: the paper is done untimed, marked generously or not at all, and then put away without anything being extracted from it. The student feels diligent and learns nothing, which is the worst possible combination because it consumes the hours that could have produced improvement.

Done properly, past-paper work is the most informative activity in a revision plan. The conditions have to be real, including timing, because pacing is one of the most common losses and it is invisible in untimed practice. The marking has to be against the published scheme, because the point is to learn what the scheme pays for rather than what seems reasonable. And the output has to be a list: which questions lost marks, what the mark scheme wanted, and what that implies for the next session.

The second discipline is selection. Working chronologically through every available paper is a poor use of time, because the student spends most of it on questions they can already do. Better to select by topic and question type against the diagnosed weaknesses, do those under time, and only then sit complete papers in the final weeks when stamina and pacing become the targets.

The third is annotation that survives. A mark scheme comparison is only useful if the student can revisit it, which is one practical advantage of working on a shared screen: the annotated script, the scheme and the notes stay together and can be reopened in the next session. A paper marked on paper in someone's living room generally disappears into a folder, and with it the only record of what the session established.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Mina Al Arab

Mina Al Arab sits among the coastal and inland communities of Ras Al Khaimah that share a small pool of Diploma subject specialists. What varies between them is the evening, not the syllabus.

Al Hamra Village

The nearest comparable gated community to the south, with a British-curriculum campus inside it. Students there are often home early, which makes a mid-afternoon session practical in the way it is for Mina Al Arab households with a short coast-road run.

Al Marjan Island

Reclaimed islands reaching into the Gulf, apartment-heavy and resort-oriented, with the most involved visitor access in the emirate. The relevant point for syllabus work is that nothing should depend on a third party arriving on time.

Al Nakheel

The central district holding most of the emirate's schools and most of its available teaching capacity. The local Higher Level pool is largest here and also the most fully committed, which is the detail families discover after a fortnight of calling.

Al Dhait

Inland villa districts north and south, established and quiet. Households frequently have a parent commuting, which pushes Diploma study into the evening and makes long Extended Essay reading blocks a weekend activity.

Khuzam

Close to the city centre with campuses within easy reach, so study evenings start early. The easiest cluster in the emirate for two short weekly sessions, which suits component work better than one long one.

Julphar and Al Qusaidat

Older districts near the creek, with the heaviest late-afternoon traffic in Ras Al Khaimah. Reliable session times here are a function of nobody needing to travel, which is precisely what live video delivery provides.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra and Seih Al Uraibi

The historic village area and the districts behind it, low density with small school-age populations. A Higher Level study group at a single subject will not assemble here, so one-to-one is the only realistic format.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject, the level and the component

Higher Level Chemistry, second term of the first Diploma year, Internal Assessment at planning stage is a brief that selects a specialist. Needs help with science selects nobody. The level and the live component together determine who is worth putting in front of your child.

  2. 02

Send one marked script, not a summary of it

The marked paper shows in minutes whether marks went to command terms, method omission, calculation discipline or genuine content gaps. Those four need different work, and the script is the only reliable way to tell them apart. It costs nothing to send.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the script on screen

One 45 to 60-minute one-to-one session over live video, no card details, no obligation. The test to apply is whether the tutor works from the evidence in front of them and whether they can name the criteria or the command terms without looking them up.

  4. 04

Agree a block with a measurable target

Six to eight sessions, a named target such as uncertainty handling or evaluation-band writing, and a stated way to check it. Open-ended weekly bookings cannot be judged, which is why they continue. Blocks with targets can be judged, repeated or stopped.

  5. 05

Measure on timed questions in the weak area

At the end of the block, the student sits timed questions in the diagnosed area and the result is compared against the start. If nothing has moved, the plan or the match was wrong and both are fixable. We would rather be told at week three than at week twelve.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Syllabus specificity instead of general support

The pages competing for this search describe a service. This one names command terms, criterion areas and the exact failure modes in each subject, because that is what distinguishes a Diploma specialist from a study-skills tutor, and it is checkable in the first conversation.

Criteria named, with their mark allocations

Not one competitor page researched across these UAE clusters names a single assessment criterion by letter. We will tell you which criteria your child's Internal Assessment is marked against and where the marks usually go missing in that subject.

Marking to the published scheme, not to impression

Past-paper work only teaches when the conditions are real and the marking follows the scheme. Our sessions mark to the scheme and produce a written list of what it paid for, which is the information a student needs to change how they answer.

A hard boundary on assessed work

Explanation of criteria, questions about the plan, feedback on the student's own draft. No writing, no rewriting, no supplied data, no editing to completion. One site ranking on these queries sells completed Internal Assessments; the risk in that transaction is entirely the student's.

Specialists rather than whoever is nearby

Ras Al Khaimah has a small private-school sector, so the number of people here who have taught a given Diploma subject at Higher Level is small and mostly committed. Online one-to-one widens that to everyone who teaches it properly, which is the whole reason this page exists.

No regulator claims and no invented figures

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or licence from the Department of Knowledge, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE or the IB, and has no UAE office. No statistic appears on this page without a source, and no IB date appears that we could not verify.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Mina Al Arab: your questions answered

My child understands the subject but the marks are low. What is going wrong?+

In most marked scripts, one of four things. A command term was misread, so the question asked for a judgement and received a description. Working was omitted on a multi-step question where method marks existed. A calculation was right but quoted to more figures than the data supports. Or the answer was correct in substance and not in the language the mark scheme pays for. None of those is a content problem and none is fixed by re-teaching the topic, which is why we ask for the script rather than for a topic list.

Which command terms cause the most trouble in IB papers?+

The middle band, where the terms look like synonyms and are not. Explain requires a mechanism, while describe requires only an accurate account. Evaluate requires strengths, limitations and a supported judgement, and a one-sided case closes the top band however well written. Compare and contrast requires linked points rather than two separate descriptions. Justify requires evidence for a stated conclusion, not the conclusion repeated more firmly. Two sessions with real question stems and a mark scheme changes how a student reads every paper afterwards.

What is the IB Internal Assessment marked against?+

Lettered criteria published in the subject guide, each with a stated maximum mark, applied by the school and then moderated. In science subjects they cover the research question and focus, the method, data presentation, analysis, evaluation and communication. The commonest structural loss is a question too broad to control, which caps the later criteria no matter how carefully the write-up is produced. Ask any prospective tutor to name the criteria for your child's subject; the answer tells you whether they know the component or have heard of it.

How early should Internal Assessment work start?+

In the first Diploma year, at the planning stage, before any data is collected. The criteria reward a controllable question and a repeatable method, and both are decided before measurement begins. An investigation with one uncontrolled variable - drifting temperature, an imprecise concentration, a timing method with large human error - limits the analysis and evaluation marks permanently. An hour spent on the method in the first year is worth more than a week spent editing in the second, and the second year has no spare weeks anyway.

Why is uncertainty analysis such a big deal in Diploma physics?+

Because it carries marks twice. Propagating uncertainties, quoting results to a defensible number of figures, drawing error bars and judging whether a gradient is consistent with a prediction all appear in the written papers and in the Internal Assessment. It is also procedural rather than conceptual, which means it can be taught cleanly in about six sessions and then becomes automatic. For a student in Mina Al Arab deciding where to spend a limited tutoring budget in physics, this is usually the highest-return choice available.

What makes Higher Level Chemistry harder than Standard Level in practice?+

Additional topics, an extra assessment component in most structures, and a calculation load that punishes imprecision. Energetics and equilibrium demand reasoning rather than recall, because the questions ask why a system behaves as it does. Organic chemistry becomes manageable only once a student reads it as pattern recognition instead of memorising reactions individually. The practical effect is that Higher Level needs support spread across terms rather than concentrated in a run-in, since the additional topics are taught late and revised least.

How should my child actually use past papers?+

Under real conditions, marked against the published scheme, with a written list of what the scheme paid for. Untimed papers hide pacing problems, and generous marking teaches the student to accept answers an examiner would not. Select by question type against diagnosed weaknesses rather than working chronologically, because chronological practice spends most of its time on questions the student can already do. Save complete papers for the final weeks, when stamina and pacing become the targets rather than content.

What is going wrong if the Exploration in maths is not scoring well?+

Usually one of two things. The student chose an application and attached mathematics to it, rather than choosing mathematics and finding a context, which produces a readable document with too little mathematical content for the upper bands. Or the question is too broad, so the write-up thins exactly where the criteria want depth and reflection. Narrowing is the first and most valuable conversation, and it needs to happen before the writing rather than during the editing. A narrow question explored thoroughly outscores an ambitious one surveyed.

Does the Theory of Knowledge essay respond to tutoring at all?+

Yes, within clear limits. The essay is assessed against published criteria on a prescribed title, and the commonest failure is writing about knowledge in general instead of answering the title. The teachable skill is building a single argument that a counter-position could genuinely challenge, then testing it with examples that do specific work rather than decorate. A tutor discusses the title, questions the argument and responds to the student's own draft. Nobody writes any part of it, including a paragraph offered as an example.

Can we find a Higher Level specialist in Mina Al Arab itself?+

Rarely, and the reason is arithmetic rather than anything about the community. Ras Al Khaimah has a comparatively small private-school sector concentrated around Al Nakheel, Al Hamra and Mina Al Arab, so each Higher Level subject is taught in a handful of settings and produces a handful of experienced teachers, most of whom are already committed in the evenings. IB Gram does not place tutors at UAE addresses in any case; we teach here one-to-one over live video, which is what makes a genuine specialist reachable.

Is a shared screen really as good as sitting beside my child?+

For syllabus work it is usually better. The student's marked script, the published criteria and the mark scheme can all be open at once, annotated by both people, with the annotations saved and reopened in the next session. A paper marked at a kitchen table generally disappears into a folder along with the only record of what the session established. Where physical presence genuinely matters is younger children and students who need an adult managing attention in the room, not a Diploma student working through a paper.

Which Diploma topics should be revised first?+

The Higher Level additional topics, counter-intuitively, because they are taught last in most schemes of work and therefore revised least. A plan that starts at the beginning of the syllabus and works forwards reaches them with no time and no energy, which is how a Higher Level candidate ends up performing like a Standard Level one on the component that distinguishes them. Start with the material that is both heaviest and least rehearsed, and leave the early topics for the consolidation passes.

How many sessions does a single subject usually need?+

It depends on which of the three problems it is. A technique problem - command terms, mark-scheme language, pacing - often resolves in four to six sessions and shows up immediately in timed questions. A component problem such as an Internal Assessment needs a short block at the planning stage and another at the draft stage, perhaps six in total. A genuine content gap at Higher Level is the slow one, measured in terms rather than weeks. Diagnose first; the answer changes the cost substantially.

What should the first session produce?+

A diagnosis, in writing, that names two or three specific things costing marks and says what the following sessions will do about each. If the first hour is spent teaching the topic a parent named, the tutor has accepted somebody else's diagnosis rather than making their own, and that is the commonest way a term of tutoring produces nothing. Watch also for whether your child does most of the talking. A session in which the tutor lectures for fifty minutes is a preview of the whole block.

Send the script, and we will tell you what it says

A Diploma grade is decided by specific components, marked against published criteria, using command terms with defined meanings. All of that is readable, and most lost marks sit in the gap between what a student knows and what the scheme pays for. So send us the subject, the level, the live component and one marked script. We will name what it shows, propose a block with a target, and you can test the match in a free trial lesson first. Lessons for Mina Al Arab students are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
