IB DP Math AI SL Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

An IB DP math AI SL tutor in Ras Al Khaimah is usually being looked for in one of two situations: a student who picked Standard Level and still cannot start a modelling question, or a student stepping down from Higher Level mid-course and needing the handover done properly. Both are timeline problems. This page sets out what Standard Level actually contains, what the two papers reward, and what the months between now and the exams have to carry.

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

Standard Level is a smaller course, not an easier one, and the clock runs the same

Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level runs to 150 teaching hours over two years and is examined by two written papers and a piece of coursework. There is no third paper. That makes the course narrower than its Higher Level counterpart, and it is where the misreading starts, because narrower is not the same as gentler. Paper 1 and Paper 2 each carry 40% of the final grade, so a single weak paper costs more here than in almost any other Diploma subject. A student who is slow on Paper 1 cannot repair it elsewhere.

The students who need help divide neatly. Some chose Standard Level AI deliberately and arrive in DP1 fluent in arithmetic and lost the moment a question presents a table of data without saying what to do with it. Modelling is a skill that no Middle Years assessment requires, and it has to be taught rather than absorbed. Others are moving down from Higher Level in the middle of DP1, usually for sound reasons, and need the transfer handled as a piece of work in itself rather than as a relief. A badly managed step down leaves gaps in the shared content that nobody goes back for.

A third group arrives late, in DP2, with the exploration unsubmitted and a predicted grade a point short of what a university offer requires. That group has the least room and the clearest priorities, because the exploration is a fifth of the grade, it is entirely under the student's control, and it is marked against five published criteria that can be worked through deliberately. Where the weeks are few, that is where they go first.

Ras Al Khaimah adds a specific constraint to all three. The emirate runs a compact set of private schools under its own Department of Knowledge, and the Diploma groups inside them are small. A mathematics teacher here may be carrying Higher Level, Standard Level and a Middle Years class in the same week, which means Standard Level AI frequently shares a room, and sometimes a lesson, with Analysis and Approaches. The content overlaps enough for that to be workable and differs enough for it to cost marks on the statistics and the calculator work.

Finding a subject specialist locally is therefore not a matter of searching harder. There are only so many Diploma mathematics teachers in the northern emirates, and the ones who exist are already timetabled. Teaching one-to-one over live video removes the geography from the problem: the tutor is chosen because they teach this course and have marked explorations against the criteria, and the session happens at a fixed time on Gulf Standard Time with no journey at either end.

The rest of this page is the detail a parent can act on. What separates AI from AA at Standard Level and why the choice matters more than families expect. How the two papers are built and what each rewards. Why calculator technique is examined rather than assumed. Where Standard Level marks actually disappear. Which exploration topics can carry Standard Level mathematics and which cannot. What the plan can include depending on when you start. And what the UAE market charges, cheapest option first.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Standard Level AI sits inside a wider IB structure, and which programme a student is in changes what the mathematics support has to do. These are the three Ras Al Khaimah families ask about most often.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Mathematics in the Middle Years Programme is marked against four criteria, with criterion D asking students to apply mathematics in real-life contexts. That criterion is the closest thing in the programme to Standard Level AI modelling, and a student who scored poorly on it in MYP 5 will meet the same difficulty again in DP1. It is the single most useful number a parent can look up before the Diploma starts.

Where a Ras Al Khaimah school runs MYP into Year 11, the standard mathematics route feeds naturally into AI at Standard Level rather than into Analysis and Approaches. Families sometimes push for AA on reputation alone, and the result is a student working at the edge of their fluency for two years when AI would have produced a better grade and the same university options.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Each Diploma student takes exactly one of four mathematics courses. Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is the applied, statistics-led option at the lighter of the two course sizes: 150 hours, two written papers of ninety minutes each, and an exploration submitted in DP2. Technology is permitted in both papers, which shapes how the course is taught and how it should be revised.

In small northern-emirate cohorts, Standard Level AI is often the largest mathematics group in the year, which is a mixed blessing. The group gets the teacher's attention, but it may also absorb students who should be in Higher Level and students who are barely coping, and a single class cannot serve both ends of that range.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme combines Diploma courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. Where mathematics appears in a CP timetable it is usually Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, because the statistics and financial mathematics map directly onto business, hospitality and engineering technology pathways.

CP is offered at relatively few campuses in the northern emirates, so a Ras Al Khaimah CP student taking AI at Standard Level may be the only one in the school doing so. That is precisely the case where one-to-one support from outside the emirate stops being a luxury and starts being the only way to get subject-specific teaching.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A Standard Level mathematics problem rarely travels alone. These are the Diploma subjects Ras Al Khaimah families most often ask about in the same conversation, and what each is actually assessed on.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Five topics taught through modelling and statistics, with technology permitted throughout. At Standard Level the course runs to 150 hours, examines two ninety-minute papers of equal weight, and asks students to fit models to real data rather than to manipulate algebra for its own sake.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

The algebra-and-proof route, with Paper 1 sat without any calculator. Students considering a move between the two Standard Level courses should know that the statistics content shrinks sharply in AA and the algebraic demand rises, which suits some students and defeats others.

Business Management

SL and HL

Five units covering human resources, finance, marketing and operations, with Paper 1 built on a case study released ahead of the exam. The finance and accounts unit uses exactly the ratio and break-even arithmetic that AI Standard Level students already practise.

Economics

SL and HL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, assessed by extended response and data response papers plus a portfolio of three commentaries. Diagram accuracy carries marks of its own, and AI students generally handle the quantitative data response well.

Biology

SL and HL

Four themes crossed with four levels of organisation, with Paper 1A multiple choice and Paper 1B data analysis sat in one sitting. The error bars, standard deviation and significance testing in Biology are the same statistical ideas AI teaches, approached from the other direction.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Structure and Reactivity across six themes, with a data booklet supplied in the exam. The quantitative sections reward calculator discipline, and the scientific investigation runs on a DP1 timeline that collides with the mathematics exploration unless both are planned together.

Physics

SL and HL

Themes A to E with a combined multiple-choice and data-analysis Paper 1. Uncertainty, gradient work and graph linearisation appear in both Physics and AI statistics, so a student doing both should be taught the shared technique once, properly.

Psychology

SL and HL

Biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches, with research methods and statistics threaded through. The descriptive statistics and the reading of studies suit AI students, and the extended writing is usually where the marks are lost instead.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

Two written papers plus an individual oral, with a Higher Level essay in addition. Students strong in mathematics commonly lose marks on the architecture of an argument rather than on comprehension, which is quick to repair one-to-one.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition of three objects and a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title. Mathematics is a standing area of knowledge in TOK, and an AI student has concrete material to draw on about models, assumptions and what counts as evidence.

Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent research essay in a subject the student chooses. An AI Standard Level student can write a mathematics Extended Essay, but the supervision question and the academic-honesty line need to be clear before the research begins.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three working patterns, chosen by how much time is left rather than by a package name. Most families start with the first and add the second when the exploration deadline comes into view.

Weekly Standard Level teaching

A single fixed session each week against a short written plan. The sequence tracks the school's scheme of work where it is holding and runs ahead of it where the statistics or calculus blocks have been compressed. Each session ends with two or three specific practice questions rather than a chapter.

  • Same tutor, same slot on Gulf Standard Time
  • Paper 1 and Paper 2 question types practised separately
  • Specific practice set after each session, not a chapter
  • Plan revisited monthly against marked work

Exploration screening and supervision support

A short block that moves a student from no topic to a submitted exploration. The first job is screening: deciding whether a proposed topic can actually carry Standard Level mathematics, because a topic that cannot will cap the use-of-mathematics criterion however well the piece is written.

  • Topic proposals tested against what the mathematics would need
  • Data sources checked for whether the analysis is possible
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only
  • Presentation and notation conventions explained once

Step-down handover from Higher Level

A focused block for students moving from Higher to Standard Level mid-course. The shared content is audited for gaps created by a compressed Higher Level scheme of work, the Paper 3 material is dropped cleanly, and the exploration is re-pitched at Standard Level depth if it was aimed higher.

  • Audit of the five shared topics for actual coverage
  • Paper 1 and Paper 2 timing re-practised at the shorter length
  • Exploration re-scoped if it was planned at Higher Level depth
  • A written handover note the school can see

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

What Standard Level AI actually contains, and who ends up taking it

  • Statistics is the largest topic by teaching time and examination presence
  • Calculus is applied: optimisation and area, with no proof required
  • Technology is permitted in both Standard Level papers
  • The three entry routes into the course need three different first months

The course has five topics: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. Statistics is the largest of them by teaching time and by examination presence, which is the opposite of what parents expect from a mathematics course and the reason some students flourish here having struggled elsewhere. The calculus is kept deliberately practical: differentiation, tangents, optimisation and the trapezoidal rule for area, with no requirement to prove anything. Technology is permitted in both papers throughout.

Three groups of students take it. The first chose it on advice and is well placed, because the modelling and statistics suit how they think. The second took it because the timetable or the subject combination left no other option, and this group needs the vocabulary of modelling taught explicitly: how to read a context, choose a model, justify the choice and interpret the answer back into the context. The third moved down from Higher Level, and their position is unusual because they have met more content than the course requires while possibly having met some of it badly.

Knowing which group your child is in changes the first month entirely. A student from the first group needs practice and timing. A student from the second needs teaching on modelling as a skill before any past paper is useful. A student from the third needs an audit, because a Higher Level scheme of work that was running behind usually leaves the same gaps in the shared content that Standard Level will examine fully. Treating all three the same is how families spend money without moving a grade.

02

AI or AA at Standard Level, and why the choice matters more than families expect

The two Standard Level mathematics courses are not a harder and an easier version of the same thing. They examine different mathematics, in different ways, with a different relationship to technology. The decision is usually made in Year 11 on the basis of reputation, and reputation points towards Analysis and Approaches because it sounds more rigorous. For a student whose strengths are data, context and interpretation, that choice can cost two grades for no gain in university access.

The single biggest practical difference is the calculator. In Analysis and Approaches, Paper 1 is sat with no calculator at all, which puts algebraic manipulation and recall under direct examination. In Applications and Interpretation, technology is permitted in both papers, so the examined skill becomes choosing the right tool and interpreting what it returns. Neither is easier. They reward different habits, and a student who is accurate under pressure by hand and a student who is strong at reading a context are not the same student.

The table below sets the two courses side by side on the dimensions that actually decide a grade. It is worth reading with your child's Diploma coordinator rather than alone, because a change of course affects the whole subject combination and there is a window inside which it is possible. After that window, the answer becomes making the current course work, which is a legitimate plan but a narrower one. One row of the table is worth more than the others for a family deciding now. The Middle Years criterion breakdown from MYP 5 is free, already exists in the school's records, and separates the two courses more reliably than a general impression of how good a student is at mathematics.

Two papers, no Paper 3: how the Standard Level grade is built

Standard Level AI is examined by two written papers of ninety minutes each, worth 40% of the final grade apiece, and by the mathematical exploration, worth the remaining 20%. There is no Paper 3; that component exists only at Higher Level. The arithmetic of that structure deserves attention, because with only three components and two of them equal, a single weak paper is unrecoverable. A student who consistently runs out of time on Paper 1 is carrying a ceiling on their grade that no amount of content revision will lift.

The two papers reward different behaviour. Paper 1 is a sequence of shorter questions in which pace and accuracy decide the mark, and in which there is no choice of question. Paper 2 is built from longer structured problems where the method has to be sustained and where a context must be read correctly before any mathematics happens. A student can be comfortably good at one and weak at the other, and a school that reports mocks as one grade conceals exactly that.

What follows from this for a plan is simple. Ask for the mock breakdown by paper. If the loss is on Paper 1, the work is timing, calculator fluency and short-question technique. If the loss is on Paper 2, the work is reading contexts, structuring extended answers and holding a method across parts. If it is on the exploration, that is a different kind of work again, and it has a deadline the school sets rather than the IB.

04

The calculator is examined content, not a convenience

Because technology is permitted in both Standard Level AI papers, the examiners assume it. Questions are written on the basis that a student can run a regression, read a normal distribution both ways, perform a chi-squared test, find an intersection graphically and solve numerically. None of those are rewarded as cleverness. They are expected, and a student who performs them slowly or unreliably loses marks on questions they understand perfectly well.

This is the most common diagnosable fault in the course and the quickest to repair. A student who takes ninety seconds to set up a regression where fifteen would do has lost a minute and a quarter on a paper of ninety minutes, and they will do it four or five times. Over a full Paper 1 that is five or six minutes, which is the difference between finishing and not finishing. The fix is mechanical: identify the operations, practise each one cold until it is automatic, then re-time a paper.

Your child's school specifies which calculator models are permitted, so the model list should come from the Diploma coordinator rather than from a shop or a forum. What a tutor can do is audit the technique in the first two sessions, against the operations the table below sets out, and report back which ones are slow rather than which ones are missing. Students rarely know; they assume everyone else takes as long as they do. The audit also catches a quieter problem, which is a student performing an operation correctly without understanding what it returns. A chi-squared statistic read off a screen with no sense of what the degrees of freedom mean produces a confident sentence that earns no marks, and that is a teaching problem wearing the costume of a technical one.

05

Where Standard Level marks actually go missing

  • Early rounding inside multi-step work, costing accuracy marks everywhere
  • Stopping at the number and leaving the interpretation mark unclaimed
  • Starting the mathematics before reading the context and the units
  • Treating linked parts of a Paper 2 question as independent

The error log of a typical Standard Level AI student is not a list of topics they do not know. It is a short list of recurring habits. Rounding is the first: the course asks for three significant figures unless told otherwise, and a student who rounds early inside a multi-step calculation loses accuracy marks repeatedly on questions they solved correctly. It appears in every topic and it is invisible to the student, because the method was right.

Interpretation is the second. An AI question frequently ends by asking what the answer means in context, and that final mark is given for a sentence about the real situation rather than a number. Students trained on procedural mathematics stop when the calculation stops. Across a full paper, those unclaimed interpretation marks add up to more than most topic weaknesses. They are also the cheapest marks in the entire course to recover, because nothing new has to be learned.

The third is the unread context. Paper 2 questions open with a paragraph that defines variables, states units and sets the scenario, and a student in a hurry starts at the first equation. Units then go wrong, or a model is fitted to the wrong variable, and the error carries through every part. Teaching a student to annotate the stem before touching the mathematics takes one session and pays back across both papers. None of these three is a knowledge problem, which is why a plan built purely on re-teaching topics so often fails to move the grade.

06

Exploration topics that can carry Standard Level mathematics, and ones that cannot

The exploration is worth a fifth of the grade and marked out of 20 against five criteria, with use of mathematics carrying six of those marks. That criterion is where topic choice is decided, because it rewards mathematics that is correct, relevant and commensurate with the level of the course. A topic that only permits averages and a bar chart caps the mark however carefully the piece is written. A topic that demands mathematics well beyond the syllabus produces work the student cannot justify, which costs marks under communication and reflection.

Screening topics early is therefore the highest-value hour in the whole exploration process, and it takes about an hour. The question is not whether the topic is interesting. It is whether the mathematics the topic requires exists inside the five Standard Level topics, whether the data can actually be obtained, and whether the student can explain every step they perform. Where the answer to any of those is no, the topic is better reshaped now than rescued in month three.

The table below takes proposals students in this emirate genuinely bring and shows what each would need. The pattern worth noticing is that the weak version and the strong version of a topic are usually the same subject matter asked more precisely. Nobody has to abandon an interest. They have to find the question inside it that Standard Level mathematics can answer properly. The second thing worth noticing is that the strong versions almost all involve data the student gathered or sourced themselves, which is how criterion C marks are earned. A topic built on a downloaded table nobody chose is harder to write about personally, and the engagement marks quietly disappear.

What the plan can include, depending on when you start

The honest version of a tutoring plan says what it cannot do as well as what it can. The number of weeks available is the constraint that decides everything else, and it is fixed before any teaching starts. A family beginning in the first term of DP1 can plan for coverage, exploration quality and timing all three. A family beginning eight weeks before the exams can plan for timing and for the two or three topics the error log identifies, and should be told plainly that broad coverage is no longer on the table.

UAE schools sit the May session, so the shape of the year is predictable even though the exact dates belong to the IB and should be confirmed through your child's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org rather than taken from any tutoring page. Coursework and internal deadlines sit in the first half of DP2. Mocks sit in the middle. The last stretch is for timing and technique, and adding new content there tends to lower the grade rather than raise it.

The table sets out what each starting point realistically supports. The purpose is not to discourage a late start, which is frequently worth doing, but to make the aim explicit. A student who begins eight weeks out and gains a grade from timing, rounding discipline and claimed interpretation marks has had good value. A student promised full coverage in eight weeks has been sold something nobody can deliver.

What Standard Level support costs here, cheapest option first

Start at the bottom of the market, because that is where most families start looking. A university-student or budget online tutor is advertised in the UAE from around AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik listing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts a weekly one-hour arrangement at that level at roughly AED 240 to 600 a month. For a student who needs practice and company rather than teaching, that tier can be perfectly adequate, and saying otherwise would be dishonest.

One step up, a qualified subject tutor working online is quoted at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, which corresponds to about AED 600 to 1,200 a month for a weekly hour. An IB or IGCSE specialist sits at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase listing AED 270, and Bestimate's specialist exam-year monthly band runs AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more. The market's premium tier reaches AED 650 an hour, published by BartyED. An in-home visit including travel is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour, with monthly in-home packages seen at AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions against about AED 799 a month for eight online sessions.

Those are published market figures with their sources named, read in October 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram price. What they are useful for is deciding which tier the problem needs. A rounding-and-timing problem does not need the specialist tier. A student who has never been taught modelling, or who is moving down from Higher Level with gaps in the shared content, is not going to be helped by the budget tier whatever it costs. IB Gram's own approach is to run the first lesson free and agree a plan afterwards, rather than quote a rate for a problem neither side has diagnosed.

Honesty, equivalency and what comes after Standard Level mathematics

The exploration is assessed as the student's own work, and IB academic honesty rules make that an obligation with real consequences. A tutor may teach the mathematics a topic requires, explain what each criterion rewards, respond to a draft the student has written, say that a conclusion does not follow from the data, and refuse a topic that cannot carry the course. A tutor supplies no text, no data and no mathematical development that goes into the document. Any service that offers a finished exploration should be refused; the malpractice finding lands on the student and can cost the whole Diploma.

For families staying in the UAE, the Ministry of Education equivalency process is separate from anything a tutor does. For the British track, the published requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count of five, plus one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. No IB points threshold should be taken from a tutoring page; verify the IB route on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate attestation authority, and treat anybody who claims to obtain equivalency on your behalf as a warning sign.

The regulator behind the school itself is the emirate's own. Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge regulates private education in the emirate and, according to u.ae, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That is useful context when reading a school's inspection report or a fee notice, and it is distinct from the permit question for tutors, which sits with MoHRE under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. Those are two different authorities doing two different jobs, and conflating them is how misleading claims get made.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

What determines whether a weekly slot survives the term is when the student is actually home, settled and able to think. These are the Ras Al Khaimah communities families book from and what each one does to the timetable.

Al Nakheel

Central and close to the older campuses, so pickup is short and a 4.15pm start holds reliably. This is the community where a second shorter midweek session is easiest to add without pushing bedtime back.

Al Hamra Village

A gated community near the RAK Academy campuses in the south. Families here tend to want a single longer session rather than two short ones, and a weekend morning slot often works better than a weekday evening.

Mina Al Arab

Waterfront housing including Hayat Island. The route back from city-side schools is slow at pickup, so sessions set at 4pm start late often enough to be worth moving to 5pm permanently.

Al Marjan Island

Island living with construction traffic and a single access road. Any arrangement that depends on somebody driving onto the island at 5pm is fragile, which is the practical argument for a session that needs no journey.

Al Dhait North and South

Inland villa districts where siblings frequently attend different campuses. Households here often book staggered slots an hour apart, which is simple to arrange over video and awkward to arrange with a visiting tutor.

Khuzam

Served by a RAK Academy campus with a steady Diploma presence. Weekday starts around 4.45pm are the norm, and the Ramadan move to a post-Iftar slot is straightforward because most families here shift together.

Al Qusaidat and Julphar

Older city districts with a large Indian-curriculum population alongside the IB cohort. Parents here are often comparing a CBSE mathematics tutor with a Diploma specialist, and the first job is to establish which syllabus the help is for.

Seih Al Uraibi and Al Mamourah

Established residential areas near the ring road. Many families here have already tried a local general-mathematics tutor and are now asking the sharper question of whether the tutor knows the Standard Level AI papers.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra and the southern coast

Spread-out coastal housing towards the Umm Al Quwain boundary. Distance from the city campuses is the defining practical fact, and travel time is the first thing a visiting tutor prices into an hourly rate.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ras Al Khaimah

Southern campuses around Al Hamra and Khuzam

Where most Ras Al Khaimah Diploma students sit their mathematics. Standard Level AI is commonly the largest mathematics set in the year group here, which makes individual attention the scarce resource rather than teaching quality.

  • RAK Academy - International School Al Hamra
  • RAK Academy - British School Al Hamra
  • RAK Academy - British School Khuzam
  • RAK English Speaking School

City-side and Indian-curriculum campuses

Schools serving Al Nakheel, Al Qusaidat and Julphar, several following CBSE or a British curriculum. Students transferring from these schools into Diploma mathematics most often need the statistics and modelling vocabulary built from scratch.

  • The Indian School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Our Own English High School Ras Al Khaimah

Where Standard Level AI students here go next

Destinations Ras Al Khaimah families weigh for business, health-science and engineering-technology routes, all of which accept Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level for at least some programmes.

  • American University of Ras Al Khaimah
  • RAK Medical and Health Sciences University
  • University of Stirling RAK
  • Ajman University
  • University of Sharjah

These schools and universities are named as local context for Ras Al Khaimah families; IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them and claims no endorsement from any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the paper breakdown, not the overall grade

The most useful thing a parent can send is the mock result split by paper, plus whether the exploration has been submitted. That single breakdown tells a tutor whether the problem is timing, context reading or coursework, and it changes what the first session does.

  2. 02

Free first lesson on a question your child cannot finish

The opening session costs nothing and runs on real content. A Standard Level AI specialist teaches through the question your child named, and you hear how it was explained. If the match is wrong, you have spent an hour and no money.

  3. 03

A short written plan with a stated aim

After the first lesson you get a plan naming the topics, the number of sessions, where the exploration sits, and what the plan is not going to attempt given the weeks available. An aim you can check is more useful than a promise you cannot.

  4. 04

A calculator and rounding audit in the first fortnight

Two sessions go on device fluency and accuracy discipline, because both are examined in this course and both are invisible to the student. The report back says which operations are slow rather than which are missing, which is usually the surprise.

  5. 05

    Monthly check against marked scripts

Progress is reviewed against work that has been marked, not against how sessions felt. Errors that recur stay on the list; topics that come back clean leave it. If the pace is wrong the plan changes rather than the hours quietly increasing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Standard Level AI, taught as its own course

Not Higher Level with sections removed and not Analysis and Approaches renamed. The tutor matched to your child teaches the two-paper structure, the statistics weighting and the technology assumptions that are specific to Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level.

The habits that cost marks get named

Early rounding, unclaimed interpretation marks and unread contexts cost more across a paper than most topic gaps. Those are diagnosed from marked scripts in the first month and drilled directly, because they are the cheapest marks available in the course.

Step-downs handled as a handover

A move from Higher to Standard Level mid-course leaves specific gaps in the shared content. The audit for those gaps is a defined piece of work with a written note at the end, rather than an assumption that less content means less difficulty.

Exploration topics screened before writing

An hour spent testing whether a topic can carry Standard Level mathematics prevents a term spent rescuing one that cannot. The screening is about the mathematics the topic requires and the data the student can actually obtain, not about whether the subject is interesting.

Every figure carries its source

The AED bands on this page are attributed to the pages and rate tables that published them, with the month they were read. No results statistic, satisfaction score or tutor headcount appears anywhere, because none of those could be evidenced.

Clear about what the weeks allow

A plan states what it will not attempt given the time available. A late start is often worth making, and it is worth making with an explicit aim rather than with an implied promise of full coverage that nobody can deliver in eight weeks.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Is AI Standard Level the easy mathematics option in the IB Diploma?+

No, it is the smaller one. Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level runs to 150 teaching hours against 240 at Higher Level, and it drops the third paper entirely. What it does not drop is examination pressure: Paper 1 and Paper 2 each carry 40% of the final grade, so one weak paper cannot be offset anywhere. The content is also genuinely different rather than reduced, with statistics as the largest block and modelling as the central skill. Students who find algebra uncomfortable often do better here; students who expect an undemanding course are routinely surprised.

My daughter is moving from AI Higher Level down to Standard Level in DP1. What should the handover cover?+

Three things. First, an audit of the five shared topics, because a Higher Level scheme of work running behind usually leaves gaps in content that Standard Level will examine in full. Second, re-practised timing, since the papers are ninety minutes rather than two hours and the question density differs. Third, the exploration: if it was pitched at Higher Level depth it may now need rescoping, and if it was pitched at Standard Level depth it may be fine as it stands. The move itself is a decision for your child's Diploma coordinator rather than for a tutor.

How many of the two Standard Level papers allow a graphic display calculator?+

Both of them. That is the structural difference from Analysis and Approaches, where Paper 1 is sat without any calculator. In Applications and Interpretation the examiners write questions assuming the device, so regression, distributions, chi-squared tests, graphical solving and numerical integration are expected to be performed quickly and accurately. Calculator work is therefore examined content rather than a convenience, and slow technique costs marks on questions the student understands. Your child's school specifies which models are permitted, so take that list from the Diploma coordinator rather than from a retailer.

Which exploration topics work at Standard Level and which ones waste a term?+

The test is whether the mathematics a topic requires exists inside the five Standard Level topics, whether the data can actually be obtained, and whether the student can explain every step. Comparing ten years of monthly temperatures with means and a line graph is too thin and caps the use-of-mathematics criterion. Modelling one year of temperature with a sinusoidal function and testing the fit against another year is the same interest asked properly. Topics needing formal proof or university-level techniques fail for the opposite reason: the student cannot justify what they did.

What does my child lose by not sitting Paper 3 at Standard Level?+

Nothing in terms of assessment coverage, because the grade is built from two papers and the exploration, and each component is weighted to account for it. What a student loses is the extended problem-solving practice Paper 3 forces on Higher Level candidates, which is a real but indirect benefit. The practical consequence for revision is positive: Standard Level time can go entirely into the two papers and the coursework. For families weighing a step down mid-course, dropping Paper 3 preparation also removes a block of teaching that is otherwise needed on its own.

Why is my son losing marks on questions he says he got right?+

Usually one of three habits rather than a knowledge gap. Rounding early inside a multi-step calculation costs accuracy marks across every topic while the method stays correct. Stopping at the number and never writing the sentence that interprets it in context leaves a mark unclaimed on question after question. Starting the mathematics before reading the stem produces wrong units or a model fitted to the wrong variable, and the error then runs through every linked part. All three are visible in marked scripts and all three respond to a few sessions of deliberate drilling.

Can one tutor cover both AI Standard Level and another Diploma subject for the same student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. Mathematics and Physics, or mathematics and Economics, are combinations some tutors genuinely teach to Diploma standard. What should not happen is a single tutor stretched across four subjects because it is administratively convenient, since Diploma assessment is specific enough that general competence shows up quickly in the marks. Where two tutors are involved, the useful step is telling each one what the other is covering, particularly where content overlaps, such as uncertainty and graph work in Physics and statistics in AI.

How quickly can a Ras Al Khaimah family get a Standard Level AI tutor started?+

The limiting factor is almost never finding a Standard Level AI teacher; it is finding one free in the slot a family wants on Gulf Standard Time. Early-evening weekday slots between 4.30pm and 6.30pm are the most contested, and term-time demand peaks around mock exams and the weeks before coursework deadlines. Where the preferred slot is unavailable the alternatives offered are a different weekday, a longer fortnightly session, or a short intensive block at a less popular time. You get told what is actually free rather than promised a slot that then moves.

Does a Standard Level mathematics grade limit university options in the UAE and abroad?+

It narrows some routes and leaves most open, and the only reliable check is the published entry requirement for each specific programme. Business, analytics, health sciences, many engineering technology courses and most social sciences accept Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level. Mathematics, physics and traditional engineering degrees frequently require Analysis and Approaches, and some require it at Higher Level. Requirements differ between courses inside the same institution, so read the programme page for each of the three or four courses your child is actually considering before drawing a conclusion.

Is a budget online tutor at AED 60 an hour enough for Standard Level AI?+

It depends entirely on what the problem is. For a student who understands the content and needs practice, accountability and someone to work alongside, the budget tier advertised in the UAE from around AED 45 to 150 an hour can be perfectly reasonable, and EdFlik lists from AED 45 to 65. For a student who has never been taught modelling as a skill, or who is carrying gaps after a step down from Higher Level, that tier is unlikely to help whatever it costs. Qualified subject tutors online are quoted around AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200.

How do live video sessions handle written mathematics in practice?+

The student works on paper or a tablet while talking the method through, and the tutor shares a screen with the past paper question, annotating it live. Completed work is photographed and returned marked, with the marks shown against the mark scheme rather than described in general terms. For a family in Al Marjan Island or Mina Al Arab the practical gain is that no part of the arrangement depends on a car journey at pickup time, which is where weekday sessions in those communities most often fall apart.

What happens to the weekly slot during Ramadan and the summer holidays?+

During Ramadan most families here move to a post-Iftar slot, and the change is made for the whole month rather than renegotiated weekly, which keeps the routine intact. Across the summer, families generally choose either a clean break with a diagnostic session in late August, or a lighter fortnightly pattern. For a student entering DP2, the summer is the cheapest window available for closing a topic gap and for collecting exploration data, because nothing else is competing for the hours and no school deadline is running.

Do we need to check that a private tutor is permitted to work in the UAE?+

It is a fair question to ask any tutor. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published. MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service is the official route, applied for through its app, website or e-services.

Which authority regulates my child's school in Ras Al Khaimah?+

The emirate's Department of Knowledge. According to u.ae it regulates private education in Ras Al Khaimah, and the Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That means curriculum and fee approval sit with the emirate rather than only with the federal Ministry of Education, which supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. It is worth knowing when you read a fee notice or an inspection report, and it is a separate matter from the tutor permit, which MoHRE issues.

Is eight weeks before the exams too late to start Standard Level mathematics support?+

No, provided the aim is stated honestly. In eight weeks a plan can fix timing on both papers, repair rounding discipline, train the interpretation sentence that so many students leave unwritten, and work through the two or three topics the error log actually identifies. That is frequently worth a grade. What eight weeks cannot deliver is coverage of a two-year course, and anybody promising it should be treated with scepticism. The useful conversation at that point is which marks are currently within reach, not which topics are missing.

Send the paper breakdown and take the free lesson

Two pieces of information get a plan started: the mock result split by paper, and whether the exploration has been submitted. With those, a Standard Level Applications and Interpretation specialist can run a free first lesson on a question your child cannot currently finish, taught live online at a fixed time on Gulf Standard Time. What follows is a short written plan that names the topics, the sessions and the aim, and says what it will not attempt in the weeks available. If the teaching does not suit your child, the cost of finding out was one hour.
