Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

A Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 tutor in Ras Al Khaimah teaches your child live over video, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time. Most families reach this page with a choice still open rather than a problem already diagnosed: Economics 0455, Business Studies 0450 or a different board's economics paper, and nobody at school has had time to explain how differently the three are marked. This page compares them, then works through the two 0455 papers and the mark ladder inside them.

  • Paper 1 is 30 multiple-choice marks and 30% of the 0455 grade
  • Paper 2 carries 90 marks across a data response and three essays
  • No coursework in 0455, so every mark is won in two sittings
  • Lessons are live over video; no tutor attends a Ras Al Khaimah address

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

The subject choice comes before the tutoring decision

Economics and Business Studies look like neighbours on an options sheet and are marked almost nothing alike. Cambridge IGCSE Economics, code 0455, is an analytical subject built on models: scarcity, demand and supply, elasticity, market failure, the multiplier, exchange rates, trade. Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies, 0450, is an applied subject built on cases: a firm in a situation, a decision to recommend, a judgement to support. A student who thinks in diagrams tends to prosper in one and feel adrift in the other, and the reverse is just as true.

Ras Al Khaimah makes the decision harder than it needs to be, because option blocks in a small cohort are narrow. A campus with one commerce teacher may run Business Studies and not Economics, or run both in the same block so a student can only take one. We regularly speak to families in Al Nakheel and Khuzam whose child was allocated the subject that fitted the timetable rather than the subject that fitted the student, and who discovered the mismatch in the first set of Year 10 assessments.

There is a third option that families rarely consider and a fourth they stumble into. Pearson Edexcel publishes its own International GCSE in Economics, code 4EC1, with a different paper structure, and some centres in the UAE follow Pearson rather than Cambridge. Cambridge also issues a numerically graded variant of Economics alongside the A*-G code, which changes nothing about the content but changes every conversation about target grades. The first thing to do is read the statement of entry and know exactly which qualification is in play.

Once that is settled, 0455 becomes a very tractable subject to support, and more tractable than most. It has no coursework and no practical component. The syllabus is six defined units. The assessment is two papers, one of thirty multiple-choice marks and one of ninety marks split between a compulsory data response and three structured questions chosen from five. The command words that govern the mark ceiling are published. A student who learns the ladder inside a twenty-mark question can usually move a grade on technique alone, without learning any new economics.

That is the honest shape of the opportunity here, and it is why we lead with structure rather than with content coverage. Most 0455 candidates in the emirate know more economics than their grades suggest. They lose marks because a four-mark part gets a two-mark answer, because a diagram is drawn without axes labelled, and because the eight-mark part ends with a summary instead of a judgement. All three are teachable in weeks. Lessons run one to one over live video, timed to the school day here, and the first one is free.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Economics appears at four points in a Ras Al Khaimah student's route, and the versions are not interchangeable. Below is what each stage assesses and what it assumes a student can already do, with notes on how each plays out in a small northern-emirates cohort.

Cambridge IGCSE Economics

Six units covering the basic economic problem, the allocation of resources and market failure, microeconomic decision makers, government and the macroeconomy, economic development, and international trade and globalisation. Assessed by a 45-minute multiple-choice paper worth 30 marks and a 2-hour-15-minute structured paper worth 90 marks. The structured paper opens with a compulsory data-response question worth 30 marks and then asks for three answers from five structured questions worth 20 marks each.

Where it runs in Ras Al Khaimah it is usually a single set, often taught alongside Business Studies by the same teacher. That concentration is the practical reason families here look outside the campus for subject-specific help: a teacher covering two commerce syllabuses cannot give one student sustained attention on diagram technique.

0450Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies

The applied alternative, built around case studies of real and invented firms. Candidates are asked to apply business concepts to a situation and justify a recommendation, with command words controlling how far an answer must go. Content covers business activity, people in business, marketing, operations and finance. It rewards students who can read a scenario quickly and write decisively, and it punishes answers that recite theory without touching the case.

More widely offered than Economics across the emirate's campuses, which is why a student who would suit 0455 sometimes ends up here. If both are available in different blocks, the choice is worth making deliberately in Year 9 rather than by timetable accident.

Cambridge International AS and A Level Economics

The post-16 continuation, with substantially more theory, quantitative work and extended essay writing than IGCSE. AS content revisits price theory and macroeconomic policy at greater depth; A Level adds market failure in detail, labour markets and international economics. The step up that catches students is not the content but the essay: judgement has to be sustained across a page rather than delivered in a final sentence.

Post-16 economics provision is limited in the northern emirates, and some students commute or change campus for it. Knowing that in Year 10 changes what else belongs on the IGCSE timetable, because a strong maths entry matters more for 9708 than most families expect.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Economics

The Diploma alternative to A Level Economics, taught at Standard and Higher Level with a different architecture: nine key concepts, four units, and an internal assessment portfolio of commentaries on published news articles. The Higher Level course adds quantitative content and a policy paper. Students arriving from 0455 recognise the models immediately; what is new is the demand to evaluate within a real published context rather than an abstract scenario.

Diploma provision in the emirate concentrates on the Al Hamra side. For a student who may end up on this route, the 0455 habit worth building now is reading one piece of economic news a week and writing three sentences of judgement about it, which is most of what the commentary later asks for.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The grid below is the commerce and social-science family a Ras Al Khaimah Cambridge candidate chooses inside, with codes as they appear on a statement of entry. Each is a separate qualification with its own command words and mark ceilings.

Economics (0455)

Single tier

Thirty multiple-choice marks in 45 minutes plus a 90-mark structured paper over 2 hours 15 minutes. Marks are lost on diagrams without labelled axes, on four-mark parts answered at two-mark depth, and on eight-mark parts that summarise instead of judging. All three are technique failures rather than knowledge gaps.

Economics, 9-1 graded variant

Single tier

Cambridge issues a numerically graded version of IGCSE Economics alongside the lettered code. Content, papers and command words are identical; only the reported scale differs. Confirm which code is on the statement of entry before any conversation about a target grade, because a target of 7 and a target of an A are different sentences.

Business Studies (0450)

Single tier

Case-study assessment where command words set the ceiling on every part. Rewards fast reading of a scenario and decisive application. A student who writes textbook theory without referring to the firm in the case will be capped however accurate the theory is, which is the mirror image of the 0455 failure pattern.

Accounting (0452)

Single tier

Double-entry bookkeeping, financial statements and basic analysis, assessed by two papers. Frequently taken alongside 0455 by students heading towards commerce degrees. The overlap with Economics is thinner than families assume: this subject rewards procedural accuracy, while 0455 rewards explanation of cause and effect.

Global Perspectives (0457)

Single tier

Research, argument and collaboration assessed through an individual report and a team project rather than timed essays. The transferable skill into 0455 is evidence selection and the habit of weighing two sides, which is exactly what an eight-mark evaluation part needs. Worth considering as the paired humanity if a student is strong on argument and weak on recall.

Geography (0460)

Single tier

Physical and human geography with a compulsory skills paper. Shares real content with 0455 on development, trade and population, and shares a mark-scheme habit too: command words control depth, and a student who learns to read them in one subject reads them better in the other.

History (0470)

Single tier

Source-based questions requiring inference and judgement under time pressure. The closest humanity to 0455 in terms of what the mark scheme rewards, because both demand a conclusion that chooses rather than a paragraph that lists. Students weak at judgement show it in both subjects simultaneously.

Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

Included because 0455 contains calculation and because post-16 economics assumes confident algebra and graph work. Extended is the tier that keeps A Level Economics and Diploma Higher Level Economics realistically open; a Core entry closes doors quietly rather than loudly.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Single tier

The stretch mathematics entry for students heading to quantitative post-16 courses. Relevant to a 0455 student only if the plan includes economics at a university that expects strong mathematics, in which case it is worth more than a second humanity on the timetable.

Sociology (0495)

Single tier

Research methods, social inequality and social institutions, assessed by extended written answers. Listed because families comparing social-science options often have it on the sheet, and because its mark scheme rewards structured argument in the same way the 0455 twenty-mark question does.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of 0455 support, with what each is honestly good for. All of it is one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India, and the comparison below is built on that fact rather than around it.

Weekly one-to-one through the course

A fixed hour a week following the school's sequence through the six units, with one timed structured question marked between sessions. This is the shape for a student who needs the subject built rather than repaired, and it produces the thing most 0455 candidates never get: a bank of their own marked twenty-mark answers with the examiner's logic written on them.

  • One timed twenty-mark question marked against command words each week
  • Diagram technique drilled until axes, curves and shifts are automatic
  • Multiple-choice sets of ten used as a quick recall check, not as the lesson
  • A running list of the student's recurring command-word errors

A technique block before the series

Six to ten sessions aimed at the mark ladder rather than at content. Typically two on the data-response question, three on building twenty-mark answers part by part, two on diagrams and two on Paper 1 timing and elimination strategy. Suits a student who knows the economics and is scoring below what their teacher expects.

  • Full Paper 2 sat to time at least twice and marked within 48 hours
  • Part (d) answers rewritten until a judgement appears without prompting
  • Paper 1 timing practised at 45 minutes for 30 questions
  • Written diagnosis of which command words cost the most marks

Private candidate support

For students whose campus does not offer Economics and who are entering 0455 as an extra qualification alongside their school timetable. The teaching covers the whole syllabus rather than supplementing a class, and the practical side matters as much as the content: entry arrangements, which centre accepts private candidates and what the deadlines are.

  • Full coverage of all six syllabus units from scratch
  • Guidance on where to verify private-candidate entry with a centre
  • Entry deadlines mapped backwards from the chosen series
  • Heavier weekly workload agreed with the family before starting

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

0455, 0450 or 4EC1: the three economics-shaped choices on a timetable here

A parent comparing options is usually looking at three or four things that sound similar and are not. Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 is analytical: the student learns models and then uses them to explain and judge. Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450 is applied: the student reads a case about a firm and recommends a course of action. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Economics 4EC1 is another board's version of the analytical subject, with its own paper structure, and some UAE centres follow Pearson instead of Cambridge. Global Perspectives 0457 is not economics at all but is often on the same options sheet because it occupies the same kind of block.

The table below sets the four side by side on the things that actually differ: what the assessment looks like, what kind of thinking earns the marks, and which student each suits. Read the right-hand column first. A student who enjoys drawing a diagram to explain why something happened belongs in 0455. A student who enjoys deciding what a business should do next belongs in 0450. Those are different pleasures and they produce different grades in the wrong subject.

One further distinction catches families out at results time rather than at option time. Cambridge issues a numerically graded variant of Economics alongside the lettered code, and the content is identical. If the statement of entry carries the numerical code, a predicted grade expressed as a letter means nothing precise, and a tutor who talks in letters is working from an assumption. Thirty seconds with the exams officer settles it.

Where a Ras Al Khaimah campus offers only one of these, the question becomes whether to accept the allocation or to sit the other as a private candidate. That is a real option and we support it, but it is a bigger commitment than families expect: a private entry means covering the whole syllabus outside school hours, arranging entry through a centre that accepts external candidates, and meeting an entry deadline that falls months before the paper.

Thirty marks of multiple choice and ninety marks of everything else

The assessment structure of 0455 is unusually clean, and knowing it precisely changes how a term of preparation is spent. Paper 1 is multiple choice: thirty questions in forty-five minutes, thirty marks, thirty per cent of the qualification. Paper 2 is structured: two hours and fifteen minutes, ninety marks, seventy per cent. There is no coursework, no practical and no internally assessed component, which means nothing can be banked in advance and nothing is carried into the examination room except what the student can do under time pressure.

Paper 1 is where families over-invest. Ninety seconds a question is comfortable for a student who knows the content, and the gains available from practice are real but capped at a few marks. It rewards elimination technique, careful reading of the stem, and resisting the first plausible option. A tutorial hour spent on multiple choice is an hour not spent on the paper that carries more than twice as many marks, and we say so rather than filling sessions with question banks because they are easy to mark.

Paper 2 is where the grade is decided. It opens with a compulsory data-response question worth thirty marks, built on a short source: extraction, calculation, explanation and a judgement part. Candidates then answer three structured questions chosen from five, each worth twenty marks. The choice itself is worth practising, because a student who starts a question on a unit they half-know and abandons it ten minutes in has lost both the marks and the time.

The table sets out the components with the places marks are most often lost. Confirm the current specification on cambridgeinternational.org for your child's examination year, because paper lengths and mark totals are set by the syllabus version in force and not by a coursebook on a shelf.

03

How a twenty-mark structured question is built, part by part

The single most useful thing a 0455 candidate can learn is that a twenty-mark question is not one question. It is a ladder of parts of increasing demand, each governed by a command word that sets a ceiling, and a student who gives every part the same treatment is guaranteed to lose marks at both ends: wasting time on the easy parts and under-answering the hard ones.

The shape is consistent. An opening part asks for a definition or an identification and is worth a couple of marks: two accurate sentences, no example needed, no diagram, thirty seconds. The next asks for explanation and is worth about double: a point and a developed consequence. The third asks for analysis and is worth more again: a chain of reasoning, usually with a diagram where one fits. The final part asks for discussion or evaluation and carries the largest block of marks on its own.

Students lose marks in a pattern so predictable it can be diagnosed from one script. The definition part gets a paragraph, which earns the same two marks a sentence would have earned and costs four minutes. The explanation part gets a definition again, because that is the comfortable move. The analysis part gets a list of three unconnected points where the mark scheme wanted one developed chain. The evaluation part gets a summary of what has already been said, with no side taken and no criterion for taking it.

The repair is a drill rather than a lesson. We write out the ladder, mark the student's own answer part by part against it, and show where the ceiling was hit and where it was nowhere near. After five or six of these, most students start reading the command word before the content, which is the whole trick. The table below is the ladder in the form we give to families, with the proviso that exact part marks vary between questions and series.

04

Diagrams and the marks most 0455 candidates leave behind

  • Both axes labelled with what they measure, not only with P and Q
  • Every curve named, and shifted curves distinguished clearly
  • New equilibrium price and quantity marked after any shift
  • Each diagram referred to explicitly in the written answer
  • The standard set drawable from memory in under a minute each

Diagrams are the cheapest marks in the subject and the most reliably wasted. A demand and supply diagram that is drawn correctly, labelled correctly and referred to in the prose supports an analysis chain in a way words alone cannot. The same diagram drawn without axis labels, with curves unnamed or with the new equilibrium left unmarked, earns a fraction of what it should and sometimes nothing at all.

The errors are specific and they repeat across scripts from every campus we see. Axes labelled P and Q with no indication of what price and quantity refer to. A supply curve shifted with no new intersection shown. Curves drawn so close together that the examiner cannot tell which is which. A diagram that appears on the page and is then never mentioned in the written answer, as though drawing it were the task. And the reverse: an analysis that cries out for a diagram, written as three sentences of description because the student finds drawing slow.

Fixing this is mechanical and fast. We build a small standard set that covers most of what the syllabus needs, and the student draws each one from memory until it takes under a minute with every label in place. Market equilibrium and a shift in each direction. A price ceiling and a price floor. An external cost. A production possibility curve. Each drawn, labelled, then explained in two sentences that point at the diagram rather than ignoring it.

Over video this works better than it does across a table, because the student draws on a shared whiteboard and the tutor annotates the same image rather than describing what is wrong with a sheet of paper upside down. The annotated version is saved, so the student has their own corrected set to revise from instead of a memory of being told.

05

The six units of the syllabus, and the two that decide most grades

The 0455 syllabus is organised into six units, and they are not equally difficult. The basic economic problem is short and conceptual. The allocation of resources, covering how the market works and where it fails, is the analytical core and the source of most diagram questions. Microeconomic decision makers brings in households, workers, trade unions, firms and banks. Government and the macroeconomy covers policy objectives, instruments and conflicts. Economic development deals with poverty, population and living standards. International trade and globalisation closes with exchange rates, protection and the balance of payments.

In our experience of marking scripts from this emirate, two units decide the grade. The first is market failure inside the allocation unit, because it demands a diagram and a judgement at once and most students can do one or the other. The second is the macroeconomy, specifically the conflicts between policy objectives, because it is the unit where an eight-mark evaluation question most often appears and where students default to listing policies rather than weighing them.

Economic development is the unit students find easiest to revise and hardest to score well in, for an interesting reason: the content is accessible, so everyone writes plenty, and the marks go to the candidate who uses specific mechanisms rather than general concern. International trade is the unit most often half-learned, because it sits at the end of the course and gets taught in the weeks when mock examinations are swallowing the timetable.

The practical consequence for a tutoring plan is ordering. We do not start at unit one and work along. We start wherever the mock script says the marks are missing, which is usually market failure or policy conflict, and we come back to the easier units later with multiple-choice sets rather than full lessons. The table sets out the six units with what each one demands and where the marks tend to go.

Evaluation: what the eight-mark part is really asking

The final part of a structured question carries the largest single block of marks and is where the difference between a middling grade and a strong one is visible at a glance. It asks the candidate to discuss or to evaluate, and most answers do neither. They explain, at length, both sides, accurately, and then stop. An examiner reading that script has nothing to reward at the top of the mark scheme, because nothing has been decided.

What the part wants is a judgement with a reason for the judgement. Not a preference, and not a hedge. The reason has to be a criterion the student states: it depends on the time period, or on how elastic demand is, or on whether the economy is near capacity, or on what the government's priority currently is. A student who writes that the effect depends on elasticity, and then says which way it goes when demand is inelastic, has done the thing the mark scheme is built around.

We teach this with a fixed sequence that students can lean on when the clock is against them. Two developed points on one side. Two on the other. One sentence naming the criterion that decides between them. One sentence giving the judgement that follows from that criterion. It is formulaic, deliberately, because a formula a tired sixteen-year-old can execute at minute ninety of a paper beats an elegant method they abandon under pressure.

The same structure carries forward. A Level Economics and Diploma Economics both ask for sustained judgement rather than a concluding sentence, so a student who learns to evaluate properly at IGCSE arrives at the post-16 course with the hardest habit already formed. This is the one part of 0455 preparation that pays dividends long after the certificate.

What 0455 tuition costs around Ras Al Khaimah, by the month

Most families budget monthly rather than hourly, so start there. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table estimates monthly outlay for one weekly one-hour session at roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for a specialist in an examination year. Published monthly packages in this market sit alongside those figures: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits.

Translated into hourly rates, the same market splits into bands. Budget online tutoring runs from roughly AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor working online sits between AED 150 and 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An IGCSE, IB or A Level specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting AED 270. At the top of the market, BartyED advertises AED 650 an hour. In-home one-to-one visits inclusive of travel are quoted by Bestimate at AED 180 to 350, and by independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500.

For a single analytical subject like 0455, the monthly view makes the decision clearer than the hourly one. A technique block of eight sessions over two months, aimed at the mark ladder and the diagram set, is a bounded purchase with a visible endpoint. A weekly slot held for eighteen months is a different kind of commitment and should be bought only where the subject is genuinely being built rather than polished. Families who treat tutoring as a subscription tend to spend the most and change the least.

Every figure above is another provider's published rate for this market in 2026, named so you can check it. None of them is an IB Gram price, and we do not print a rate card on these pages: the honest number depends on level, subject and how many sessions are actually needed, and any figure here would be stale before your child's series. As household context, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's second economic incentives package; the northern emirates set fees through their own authorities.

A visiting tutor or live video, for one subject in a small emirate

This comparison deserves to be made on the numbers rather than on preference, because for a single analytical subject in the northern emirates it is not close. The in-home premium in this market is AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online, and the gap is not buying better teaching. It is buying a commute and, more importantly, it is buying from whoever is within driving distance.

That last point is the one that matters in Ras Al Khaimah. Economics is a single-set subject on most campuses here. The number of people in the emirate who teach Cambridge 0455 and are available on a Tuesday evening and are willing to drive to Al Rams is very small. Searching inside that set and then choosing the best available is a different exercise from choosing a 0455 specialist, and a parent who believes they have done the second when they have done the first will be disappointed without understanding why.

There are genuine advantages to a person in the room, and they are worth naming honestly. A younger child benefits from physical presence. A student who will not engage without an adult sitting beside them benefits. Equipment-heavy subjects benefit. Economics at sixteen is none of those cases: the materials are a diagram, a past paper and a mark scheme, all of which live better on a shared screen that saves the annotation than on a sheet of paper that goes into a bag.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and home visits are a service offered only in India. We state the rule rather than implying flexibility, because a family in Mina Al Arab deciding between a visiting tutor and a specialist over video deserves the comparison straight. The table sets it out on the four dimensions that change the outcome.

When a 0455 tutor is the wrong purchase

There are situations where we tell a family not to buy. The clearest is the student who is scoring well on Paper 1 style questions and poorly on structured answers but has never sat a full timed Paper 2. That student does not need teaching; they need three timed papers and a marker, and a parent can arrange much of that with the school for nothing. We will say so in the diagnostic session and we will not sell a term of weekly lessons around it.

The second is the student whose economics grade is a symptom of a reading or a writing problem rather than an economics problem. If the four-mark explanations are short because the student struggles to develop any idea in writing, the subject support will underperform until the writing is addressed. In that case the useful purchase is English support, and the economics grade will move as a side effect. Diagnosing this takes one look at a script and saves a family a term of the wrong hours.

The third is the student who has not yet decided whether they are doing this subject at all. Paying for Economics tuition while an option sheet is still open is spending money on a decision rather than on learning. One conversation about 0455 against 0450, with a clear account of how differently the two are marked, is worth more at that moment than six lessons, and it costs the price of a trial.

We publish this because the alternative is a market where nobody says it. A platform that answers every enquiry with a weekly slot is optimising its own revenue, not the student's grade. The free trial exists partly so that this conversation can happen before any money moves, and a recommendation to buy nothing is a legitimate outcome of it.

Where we tutor

Economics requests across Ras Al Khaimah, and what differs between communities

Requests for single-subject commerce support cluster unevenly across the emirate, and the differences are practical: which campus a household is attached to, whether Economics runs there at all, and what time a session can realistically start.

Al Nakheel

The largest source of 0455 enquiries in the emirate, mostly from city-side campuses where Economics runs as a single set. The usual request is a weekly hour from January of Year 11 onwards, which is later than ideal but still enough time for technique work.

Khuzam

Households attached to British-curriculum provision nearby. Enquiries here more often involve a student weighing 0455 against 0450 while the option sheet is still open, which is the most useful moment for a single diagnostic conversation.

Al Dhait North and South

A pattern of sibling bookings: one student on a commerce subject, another on maths, in consecutive evening slots. Scheduling two subjects back to back is straightforward over video and impossible to arrange with two visiting tutors.

Al Hamra Village

International and British provision on this side of the emirate, where a student may be choosing between IGCSE Economics now and Diploma Economics later. The sequencing question matters more here than the subject-choice question.

Mina Al Arab and Hayat Island

Newer coastal communities with a longer run to city-side campuses. Families here are the ones who most often say the economics of a visiting tutor stopped making sense once the drive was priced in honestly.

Al Marjan Island

A smaller resident population, frequently travelling during term. Single-subject support suits this pattern well, because one weekly hour over video survives a fortnight in another time zone where a fixed local appointment does not.

Al Mairid, Al Uraibi and Julphar

Older city districts with established campuses. A share of enquiries from here are private candidates: students whose school does not offer Economics and who are sitting it as an extra entry alongside their school timetable.

Al Qusaidat and Al Rams

The northern strip, where no amount of searching produces a nearby 0455 specialist. Families here do not need persuading that distance is irrelevant to a subject taught through a shared screen and a diagram.

Digdaga and the inland belt

Inland households with long commutes in both directions. Sessions settle late, usually 6.30pm or after, and weekend mornings are popular for the longer stretch that timed Paper 2 practice needs.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ras Al Khaimah

City-side campuses running commerce option blocks

Where most commerce candidates in the emirate are enrolled. The relevant detail for 0455 is how narrow a block is: where one teacher covers both Economics and Business Studies, individual attention on diagram and evaluation technique is hard to resource however good the teaching is.

  • Scholars Indian School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Delhi Private School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Little Flower English School Ras Al Khaimah

British and international provision on the southern coast

Campuses on the Al Hamra side more often continue into post-16 economics, which changes what a Year 11 should be building now. Students from this cluster tend to need essay judgement developed early rather than content coverage repeated.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the code and the board

Send the syllabus code from the statement of entry: 0455, the numerically graded variant, 4EC1 for Pearson, or 0450 if it turns out to be Business Studies after all. If you do not have the statement of entry, a photograph of the last report and the name of the campus is usually enough for us to work it out and check.

  2. 02

    Send one marked structured answer

Not a report and not a percentage. One twenty-mark answer with the teacher's marks on it tells us which rung of the ladder is failing, whether diagrams are present and labelled, and whether any judgement appears in the final part. That is the whole diagnosis and it takes a tutor about ten minutes.

  3. 03

Use the free trial to test the marking

In the trial lesson, ask the tutor to mark an eight-mark answer out loud, part by part, against the command word. A tutor who can explain exactly why an answer sits at four marks rather than six is the one worth booking. A tutor who praises the content and moves on is not, however pleasant the hour is.

  4. 04

Fix the slot around the real school week

Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time around the school day and the run home, which for households in Digdaga or Al Rams is the binding constraint rather than an inconvenience. Choose a time that holds on an ordinary week; the weekly marking cycle is what produces the improvement and it only works if the slot survives.

  5. 05

Measure against timed papers, not impressions

Every four to six weeks a timed Paper 2 question set is marked to the criteria and compared with the previous one. If the ladder scores are not climbing we change the approach or tell you the hour is not earning its money. If no 0455 specialist is free at your preferred time we say so rather than substituting a generalist.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The subject choice gets answered first

Most pages in this market sell tuition for whichever subject the parent names. We start by checking that 0455 is the right subject and the right board for that student, because a child in the wrong commerce subject cannot be tutored into the right one and the decision window is Year 9, not Year 11.

Marks are taught as a ladder

Every structured question is a sequence of parts with command words that set ceilings. Students are drilled to read the command word before the content and to proportion time to marks. This is technique rather than knowledge, it is teachable in weeks, and it is where most 0455 candidates in this emirate are losing grades.

Diagrams are drilled to automatic

A small standard set drawn from memory in under a minute each, fully labelled, and referred to explicitly in the prose. Drawn on a shared whiteboard, annotated in place and saved, so the student revises from their own corrected set rather than from a memory of being corrected.

Rates are other people's, named and dated

Every AED figure on this page is a published market rate from a named provider in 2026. We print no invented statistic, no self-reported rating and no grade promise. IB Gram publishes no rate card here, because an honest number depends on the subject and the number of sessions and would be stale by your child's series.

We will tell you not to buy

Where the problem is a missing timed paper, a writing weakness or an undecided option sheet, the right answer is not a weekly slot. The diagnostic conversation happens before any payment and a recommendation to buy nothing is a normal outcome of it.

Delivery is stated, not implied

Teaching is one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. The cost comparison on this page is built on that rather than arranged to avoid it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Should my son take Economics 0455 or Business Studies 0450?+

They reward different kinds of thinking. 0455 is analytical: the student learns models and uses them to explain why something happened, usually with a diagram. 0450 is applied: the student reads a case about a firm and recommends what it should do, with marks for touching the specific situation. A child who enjoys working out mechanisms generally does better in Economics; a child who enjoys deciding does better in Business Studies. Where a Ras Al Khaimah campus offers both in different blocks, make the choice deliberately in Year 9. Where only one runs, the other can be sat as a private candidate, but that is a larger commitment than most families expect.

Is the 0455 multiple-choice paper easier than the structured paper?+

It is shorter and it carries far less weight. Paper 1 is thirty questions in forty-five minutes for thirty marks, which is thirty per cent of the qualification. Paper 2 runs two hours and fifteen minutes for ninety marks and seventy per cent. Families often over-invest in multiple-choice practice because question banks are easy to set and easy to score, but the gains available there are a few marks. The paper that decides the grade is the structured one, and an hour spent on question banks is an hour not spent on the mark ladder inside a twenty-mark answer.

How is the data response question in 0455 Paper 2 structured?+

It is compulsory, worth thirty marks, and built on a short source that candidates must actually use rather than describe. The parts move from extraction and calculation through explanation to a judgement, in the same escalating pattern as a structured question. The commonest errors are paraphrasing the source instead of applying it, skipping a calculation because it looks fiddly, and treating the final part as a summary. After the data response, candidates answer three structured questions chosen from five, each worth twenty marks, and the selection itself is worth practising.

Does IGCSE Economics involve much mathematics?+

Some, and less than families fear. Candidates calculate percentages, index numbers and simple elasticity values, read and interpret data from tables and graphs, and draw diagrams accurately. There is no algebra of the kind an A Level course expects. A student comfortable with Extended 0580 mathematics will find the quantitative content undemanding; a student on the Core tier can still do it, but the post-16 route matters here, because A Level Economics and Diploma Higher Level Economics both assume stronger mathematics than 0455 requires. That is a Year 9 timetable decision worth making with the destination in mind.

What does an evaluate question in 0455 actually want?+

A judgement with a stated reason, not a balanced summary. Two developed points on each side earns marks in the middle of the scheme and no further. The top of the scheme needs a criterion the candidate names, such as the time period, the elasticity of demand, or whether the economy is near capacity, and then a decision that follows from it. We teach a fixed sequence for this: two points one way, two the other, one sentence naming the criterion, one sentence giving the judgement. It is formulaic deliberately, because a formula survives minute ninety of a long paper.

My daughter knows the economics but her grade is stuck. Why?+

Almost always it is the mark ladder rather than the content. Give us one marked twenty-mark answer and the pattern is usually visible in ten minutes: a two-mark definition answered in a paragraph, a four-mark explanation that repeats the definition, a six-mark analysis written as three unconnected points, and an eight-mark part that summarises instead of judging. That student is losing marks at every rung while knowing the subject perfectly well. It is technique, it responds to five or six marked drills, and it is why we ask for a script rather than a percentage.

Which parts of the 0455 syllabus cause the most trouble?+

Two units decide most grades in our experience of marking scripts from this emirate. Market failure inside the allocation unit is the first, because it demands an accurate diagram and a judgement in the same answer and most students manage one of the two. The second is government and the macroeconomy, specifically the conflicts between policy objectives, where eight-mark evaluation questions concentrate and where candidates default to listing policies. International trade is the most commonly half-learned, because it is taught last, usually during mock season when nothing is absorbed properly.

Do 0455 candidates have to draw diagrams, and how are they marked?+

Diagrams are not demanded in every answer, but in analysis questions on the market they are the difference between a described answer and a reasoned one, and they are the cheapest marks available. They have to be labelled properly: both axes with what they measure, every curve named, the new equilibrium marked after a shift, and the diagram referred to explicitly in the written answer. A diagram that appears and is never mentioned earns very little. We drill a small standard set until each one takes under a minute with every label in place.

Is there any coursework in Cambridge IGCSE Economics?+

None. 0455 has no coursework, no practical and no internally assessed component, which has two consequences. Nothing can be banked in advance, so every mark is won in two sittings under time pressure, and timed practice is therefore not optional revision but the main preparation available. It also means the academic-honesty questions that surround coursework subjects do not arise here: there is no submitted work for anyone to have helped with. What a tutor marks is practice, and the only thing an examiner ever sees is what the student writes alone in the hall.

Does 0455 prepare a student for IB Diploma Economics?+

The models transfer almost completely, and the habit that does not is judgement sustained across a page. Diploma Economics is taught at Standard and Higher Level around nine key concepts and four units, with an internal assessment portfolio of commentaries on published news articles, and Higher Level adds quantitative content. A student arriving from a strong 0455 recognises the economics immediately. What is new is applying it to real published material and evaluating within it. The habit worth building now is reading one piece of economic news a week and writing three sentences of judgement about it.

What does Cambridge Economics tuition cost per month for a family here?+

Published market estimates for one weekly one-hour session put monthly outlay at roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for a specialist in an examination year, according to Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. Package rates circulating in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. Those are other providers' figures, cited for context. IB Gram does not publish a rate card here; book the trial and get a number in writing.

Our campus does not offer Economics. Can my child sit 0455 privately?+

Yes, and it is a real option that needs its eyes open. A private entry means covering all six syllabus units outside school hours, arranging entry through a centre that accepts external candidates, and meeting an entry deadline that falls months before the paper rather than weeks. For a Ras Al Khaimah candidate the series is June or November: a June entry closes in the spring for papers that run from May into June, and a November entry closes over the summer for papers in October and November. The teaching workload is heavier than supplementary support, usually two sessions a week rather than one, and the family should agree to that before starting rather than discover it a term in.

Can one tutor cover 0455 Economics and 0580 Mathematics together?+

Often yes, and in Ras Al Khaimah it is a common request because the quantitative parts of Economics and the data-handling parts of Mathematics reinforce each other. What matters is that the tutor is genuinely strong in both rather than adequate in one and willing in the other. We would rather split a student across two specialists than place a single convenient tutor on both subjects. Where one person does cover both, we keep the sessions separate in the week, because a combined hour reliably becomes an hour of whichever subject has homework due.

How early before the June series should 0455 work start?+

If the aim is technique, eight to ten weeks of weekly marked structured answers is enough to change how a student reads a command word, which means starting around February for a June series. If the aim is building the subject, because a student has drifted through a unit or joined the course late, start in the autumn term. The deadline nobody expects is the entry deadline: for a June series the centre's final entry closes in the spring, months before the first paper, so every decision that rides on the entry - the tier, the subject list, whether a November resit goes in alongside it - has to be settled while that technique work is still running.

Is a visiting tutor worth the travel premium for a single subject here?+

For Economics at sixteen, the honest answer is rarely. Published market rates put in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 500 an hour inclusive of travel against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, and the premium buys a commute rather than subject depth. The deeper problem in the northern emirates is the pool: the people who teach 0455 and will drive to Al Rams on a Tuesday are a very short list. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, so what we offer is the specialist over live video, with the annotated work saved.

What if my child only needs help with the eight-mark questions?+

Then buy that and nothing more. A block of six to eight sessions aimed purely at the evaluation part is a bounded purchase: the student writes one eight-mark answer a session, it is marked out loud against the command word, and the fixed sequence of two points, two counterpoints, a criterion and a judgement is practised until it appears without prompting. Most students show a visible change by the fourth or fifth attempt. We would rather sell that block and stop than convert a narrow need into an eighteen-month weekly slot that nobody reviews.

Send one marked answer and we will tell you what is wrong

The fastest way to know whether 0455 support will help your child is to send a single marked twenty-mark answer with the teacher's comments on it. A tutor will read it against the command words and tell you which rung of the ladder is failing: the definition answered at paragraph length, the explanation that never develops, the analysis written as a list, or the final part that summarises instead of judging. If the answer is that your child needs three timed papers rather than a term of lessons, we will say that. The trial lesson is free, happens before any payment, and is taught by the tutor your child would keep.
