IGCSE Business Tutor in Dubai

An IGCSE business tutor in Dubai can diagnose most of a grade with a highlighter. Take the student's last case-study answer, highlight every sentence that refers to the named business, and count. In a mid-range script the count is nearly zero, and that is where the marks went. This page builds the record around that tally, with every session leaving a marked script behind. Lessons run one-to-one on live video, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Every marked script carries an application tally the student can see
  • Calculation marks tracked separately, because business students skip them
  • Evaluation marked for a judgement with a condition, not for balance
  • One free 30-minute trial lesson per family, no card details taken

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Count the context references, then talk about the grade

Business Studies is the IGCSE subject students most often feel they are doing well at while scoring in the middle, and the reason is unusually easy to demonstrate. Take any marked case-study answer, read it with a highlighter, and mark every sentence that refers to something specific about the business in the question: its name, its market, its size, the problem the case described, the figure in the table. In a strong script the highlighter is busy. In a mid-range Dubai script it barely moves.

That tally is the diagnosis. The content is usually there — a student who can define cash flow, list sources of finance and explain motivation theory has learned the specification — and the marks are not, because business mark schemes award application. Credit attaches to theory used on the named business rather than to theory recited correctly. A perfectly accurate paragraph about the advantages of a private limited company earns a fraction of what the same paragraph earns when it is about the private limited company in the case.

So the record this plan builds begins with the tally on every script. Sentences that apply, sentences that do not, and a count. Students argue with it for about two sessions and then it becomes the most useful number in their file, because it is something they can change deliberately. A tally of two moving to a tally of nine across six weeks is attributable, visible progress in a subject where progress otherwise feels like a matter of opinion. It is also the first number in the file that a school engages with, because it is derived from the school's own marked script rather than from a parent's impression of how well their child writes.

The second item on the record is the calculation tally. Business carries quantitative marks — break-even, gross and net profit margins, cash-flow forecasts, return on capital, market share — and a surprising number of Dubai students skip them in a timed paper on the assumption that the written answers matter more. They are the easiest marks on the paper, they are fully determinate, and leaving them is the single most avoidable loss in the subject. Counting attempted calculations against available ones each week fixes it quickly.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For business the shared screen is the right medium: the case-study extract and the student's own answer sit side by side, highlights go on in a second colour, and the marked version is saved so week six can be compared with week one. A Dubai family in Mirdif or Al Furjan also gets a tutor who marks to the specification the school actually entered.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Business is usually a new subject at 14, and the stage either side of Year 11 changes what the work should be. These are the four points that shape a Dubai family's plan.

NEWAges 14-15 · Year 10

Starting business studies in Year 10

No prior attainment to read, because most students meet the subject for the first time at IGCSE. The first term should establish three habits: reading the command word, applying every point to the named business, and attempting every calculation. Content accumulates easily once those three exist.

Dubai schools differ in whether business studies, economics or both sit in the same option block. Where a student takes both, the overlap in market, cost and external-influence content is substantial and worth planning around rather than revising twice.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

IGCSE Business, Year 10

Business activity, ownership, objectives, stakeholders, people in business and the start of marketing in most schemes of work. The application habit is the Year 10 priority because it takes months to build and because every later topic is examined the same way.

Dubai's long December break is a useful window for a calculation intensive: four consecutive mornings covering break-even, margins, cash flow and ratios produces more security than the same hours spread weekly across a term.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

IGCSE Business, Year 11

Operations, finance, external influences and the case-study technique that carries half the Cambridge grade. The Year 11 priorities are the high-tariff evaluation question and the five-minute approach to an unseen case, both of which are technique rather than content.

UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June and November series; the February/March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Dubai schools enter overwhelmingly for the summer window, with November kept as the resit route.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level business or IB Diploma business management

The application habit is what transfers. Diploma Business Management requires an internal assessment built on a real organisation, and A Level business raises the evaluation demand sharply. A student who has learned to apply at IGCSE arrives with the only skill that scales.

UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the five, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. Tutoring is not required for the process.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Business is taught by content area and examined by skill, and a plan needs both views. These are the units a Dubai plan is built from, with what the record usually shows about each.

Understanding business activity

Cambridge 0450 and Pearson 4BS1

Business objectives, classification, ownership types, size measurement and growth. Heavy on terminology, which makes it a bank-and-test topic, and the one where generic answers are most tempting because the theory is tidy.

People in business

Cambridge 0450 and Pearson 4BS1

Motivation, organisational structure, recruitment, training and communication. Motivation questions are where application collapses most visibly: students name a theory and never connect it to the workers described in the case.

Marketing

Cambridge 0450 and Pearson 4BS1

Market research, segmentation, the marketing mix and competitiveness. Market share calculations live here and are routinely skipped. Promotion answers lose marks for listing methods rather than choosing one and justifying it for this business.

Operations management

Cambridge 0450 and Pearson 4BS1

Production methods, productivity, quality, location and scale. Location questions are the clearest application test in the specification: the answer has to be about where this business actually is and what the case said about it.

Financial information and decisions

Cambridge 0450 and Pearson 4BS1

Sources of finance, cash flow, break-even, income statements and balance sheets, and ratio interpretation. The quantitative heart of the subject and the richest source of determinate marks that students leave on the table.

External influences on business activity

Cambridge 0450 and Pearson 4BS1

Government policy, international trade, exchange rates, technology, ethics and the environment. A topic where Dubai students have unusually good real material available and almost never use it.

The case-study paper

Half the Cambridge grade

An unseen case with questions requiring theory used on the business described. The highest-value technique in the subject is the first five minutes: reading the case with a pen and annotating the facts that the questions will need.

Calculations

Across both papers on both specifications

Break-even, contribution, margins, cash-flow forecasting, market share and ratios. Fully determinate marks with a right answer, and the most avoidable loss in the subject because students skip them under time.

The terminology bank

Not a content area, and worth banking

Short-answer definitions and two-mark openers accepted in a precise form. Needs testing rather than teaching, which means a student can run it alone and should not be charged a qualified hourly rate to be read a list.

Evaluation and recommendation questions

The highest-tariff question type on both specifications

A recommendation supported by reasoning and conditioned on something specific to the business. Students answer with balanced lists ending in 'it depends', which is the shape of a judgement without the substance of one.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Business support divides into three jobs with different rhythms and different prices, and running them as one weekly hour is why students can have tutoring for a year and stay mid-range.

Weekly marked script with the tally

Sixty minutes a week. A case-study question set sat between sessions and marked beforehand, with every sentence highlighted for application and the tally reported. Twenty minutes on the tally and what a non-applying sentence would have looked like applied, thirty on the content the marking exposed, ten setting the next set.

  • 60 minutes, live video, one named specification per slot
  • Application tally reported on every marked script
  • Attempted calculations counted against available ones
  • Script and tally to the parent the same evening

Calculation block, short and determinate

Four to six sessions on break-even, contribution, margins, cash-flow forecasting, market share and ratio interpretation. These marks have right answers, which makes them the easiest in the subject and the most commonly abandoned under time. Measured by attempted-against-available counts rather than by confidence.

  • Four to six sessions with a stated end rather than open-ended
  • Each calculation type practised under time until it is automatic
  • Interpretation required after every calculation, not just the figure
  • Attempted-against-available count recorded weekly

Case-study technique block

Six sessions on the unseen case: the first five minutes with a pen, annotating the facts the questions will need, then answering with the annotation in view. The object is a repeatable routine for reading a case, not more content. Most valuable in the spring of Year 11 when the content is nearly complete.

  • A fixed five-minute reading and annotation routine, practised every session
  • Questions answered with the annotation visible rather than from memory
  • Figures in the case treated as evidence to be quoted
  • Timed full papers only once the routine is automatic

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The application tally, and why it predicts the grade

  • Mark schemes pay more for theory used on the case than for theory recalled
  • Highlight sentences containing a case-specific detail and count them
  • Mid-range scripts frequently return one or two applied sentences in twelve
  • A tally is actionable where a mark and a sense of unfairness are not

Business mark schemes separate what a student knows from what they do with it, and the separation is sharp. Knowledge of a concept earns a small amount. The same concept used on the business in the question earns more, and analysis of a consequence for that business earns more again. A student whose answers are accurate and generic has produced the lowest-earning version of a correct answer, repeatedly, across an entire paper.

The tally makes that visible in a way a mark cannot. Read the student's own answer with a highlighter and mark every sentence containing something specific to the case: the business name, its market, its size, the problem described, a figure from the table, a detail about its customers or location. Count the highlighted sentences against the total. A mid-range Dubai script frequently returns a tally of one or two out of twelve, which means the student wrote eleven sentences a textbook could have written.

What changes behaviour is doing the highlighting with the student rather than for them. The first session is usually spent in mild disbelief, because the student recognises the content as correct and cannot initially see what is missing. The second session is spent rewriting three sentences to apply, which is mechanical: name the business, use its actual circumstances, attach the consequence to it. By the fourth week the tally is rising and the student is doing the highlighting themselves.

The tally also fixes a motivational problem specific to this subject. Business feels like a subject of opinions, so a mid-range mark reads as unfair. A tally of two out of twelve reads as a fact, and facts are actionable in a way that a sense of injustice is not. That shift is, in practice, the largest single thing a business tutor does for a Dubai student.

02

The paper map, and where half the grade sits

On Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450 the case-study paper carries fifty per cent of the grade and the short-answer and data-response paper carries the other fifty. Both are an hour and a half. That equal split means neither can be sacrificed, and in practice the case-study paper is the one students prepare least for, because preparing for it requires practising a reading routine rather than revising content.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Business 4BS1 also splits across two written papers of ninety minutes at equal weight, with its own distribution of content across them. The practical point for a Dubai family is the same in either case: confirm the specification code with the school's exams officer, then pull the component structure for that code rather than working from a general impression of what business papers look like.

Within each paper there is a question-type ladder, and a student's marked script should be broken down along it rather than by topic. Short definition and identification questions. Explanation questions wanting a developed point. Analysis questions wanting a consequence traced for the business. High-tariff evaluation or recommendation questions wanting a conditional judgement. Calculations with determinate answers. Five different demands, and a middling total can conceal two secure types and three failing ones.

The topic view and the question-type view give different instructions, which is why the distinction matters. A topic breakdown says the student is weak on finance. A question-type breakdown says the student loses every analysis mark on every topic, including finance, and attempts no calculations. Those are different plans with different costs, and only one of them is derived from how the paper is actually marked.

03

The calculations nobody attempts

Business carries a set of quantitative marks that behave unlike the rest of the subject: they have right answers. Break-even output and contribution per unit. Gross and net profit margins. A completed cash-flow forecast with closing balances. Market share. Return on capital employed. Current ratio. Each is a short determinate calculation, each is worth marks, and a meaningful share of Dubai students leave them blank under time on the assumption that the written answers matter more.

They do not. A skipped calculation is a certain zero on a question where the student could have earned full marks with a formula and thirty seconds of arithmetic. In a paper where every written answer is a judgement against a mark scheme, the determinate marks are the most reliable ones available, and abandoning them is the clearest example in the subject of effort being spent in the wrong place.

The fix is a count rather than a lecture. Each week the marked script records the number of calculations available and the number attempted. A student who sees four available and one attempted three weeks running usually changes behaviour by week four, because the number is embarrassing in a way that advice is not. Four to six sessions of timed calculation practice makes the arithmetic automatic so there is no reason left to skip.

Interpretation is the second half and is frequently missing even when the calculation is done. A margin computed and left as a number earns the calculation mark and not the analysis mark; a margin computed and then compared with last year's or with a competitor's, with a consequence for the business stated, earns both. That is a one-sentence habit and it belongs on the same record as the attempted-against-available count.

THE DETERMINATE MARKS: WHAT IS AVAILABLE AND WHAT STUDENTS DO WITH IT

04

Evaluation: a recommendation has to be conditional

  • Case for, case against, recommendation, and the condition it depends on
  • The condition must come from the case rather than from general theory
  • Six drilled paragraphs make the shape automatic
  • Local business observation gives real conditions to anchor a recommendation

The highest-tariff business question asks for a decision: should this business do the thing, and why. Students answer in one of two unsuccessful ways. Either they list advantages and disadvantages and finish with 'it depends on the situation', which is the shape of a judgement with none of its substance. Or they state a recommendation with no counter-consideration at all, which reads as assertion.

The successful shape is explicit. State the case for, applied to this business. State the case against, applied to this business. Make the recommendation. Then state what it depends on, specifically: the firm's current cash position as given in the case, the size of the market it operates in, whether it competes on price or on quality, how long it can wait for a return. The condition has to come from the case rather than from general business theory, which is where the application habit and the evaluation habit meet.

Drilling it means one written evaluation paragraph per session, marked for four things: case applied, counter applied, recommendation made, condition drawn from the case. Six sessions is usually enough. Explained rather than drilled, evaluation stays an instruction to 'develop judgement', which no fifteen-year-old can convert into a sentence.

There is a second-order benefit for Dubai students. A recommendation conditioned on something real is easier to write when a student has seen businesses operate, and this emirate supplies examples a textbook does not: retailers whose trade is seasonal around the summer exodus, businesses whose costs move with rent cycles, firms serving a transient population with high customer turnover, importers exposed to currency and shipping. Those are legitimate anchors for recommendation questions, used to support an argument rather than to replace it.

THE FOUR ELEMENTS OF A BUSINESS RECOMMENDATION, AND WHAT IS MISSING WITHOUT EACH
ElementWhat the student writesWhat it earnsWhat the answer looks like when it is missing
Case for, appliedThe argument in favour, tied to this business's stated circumstancesApplication and analysis credit on the strongest sideA general argument a textbook could have made about any firm
Case against, appliedThe counter-consideration, also tied to the caseCredit for weighing rather than assertingA recommendation that reads as an opinion with no resistance
RecommendationA plain decision: the business should or should notThe judgement itselfA balanced list that stops before deciding anything

Figure citedA number from the case used to support the decisionEvidence credit that is otherwise unclaimedAn argument about finance with no finance in it
05

The five minutes that decide the case-study paper

The case-study paper is the component students prepare least for and it carries half the Cambridge grade. Preparation is not content revision; it is a reading routine. The highest-value five minutes in the examination are the ones spent before writing anything: reading the case with a pen, annotating the facts, and marking the figures that the questions will almost certainly need.

The routine is specific enough to drill. On the first read, underline what the business does, its ownership type, its size and its market. Circle every number. Mark the problem the case is built around, because the high-tariff question is usually about it. Note anything that looks like a constraint — a cash position, a competitor, a location, a staffing issue — because constraints are what evaluation conditions are made from. Then read the questions and go back.

Students who do not have a routine read the case once, start answering, and return to the text repeatedly under time pressure, which costs minutes and produces answers that cite the case less because the detail was never captured. The annotation is what makes the application tally rise in the examination rather than only in practice, which is the whole point of building the habit.

Timed full papers come after the routine is automatic, not before. A timed paper sat without the routine measures the absence of a routine, which is information the student already had. Six sessions on the routine followed by timed practice produces a different result from six timed papers, and it is a cheaper sequence because the technique sessions do not need to be long.

06

The terminology bank, handed back to the student

Business carries a large set of short definitions and identifications that mark schemes accept in a precise form: added value, a public limited company, economies of scale, a cash-flow forecast, delayering, a secondary-sector business, a profit margin, market segmentation. Each is worth marks on a short-answer question, and each requires the right words rather than any reasoning.

That makes the terminology bank a discipline task rather than a teaching one. Around fifty terms, written in the form the specification uses, tested in five-minute written sets two or three times a week, scored, with the gap list shortening visibly. A student can run it alone or with a parent, and a family should not be paying a qualified hourly rate for someone to read a list aloud.

Two details make it work. The testing must be written rather than verbal, because a student who recognises a definition will not reliably produce one under time, and only production is examined. And the terms must be in the specification's own phrasing rather than a textbook's paraphrase, which requires someone who has read the specification to build the list in the first place. Building the list is tutoring work; running the tests is not.

The score belongs on the record alongside the application tally and the calculation count. Three countable numbers, dated, is a more honest picture of a business student than any report-card grade: a tally of nine out of twelve, a calculation count of four out of four and a terminology score of 46 out of 50 describes a student who is going to do well, and it says so before the examination rather than afterwards.

07

Dubai businesses as examination material

Business Studies rewards application, and a student living in Dubai has unusually good material to apply from. Most never use it, partly because nobody suggests it and partly because the textbook examples are about firms in other countries. Observation is a legitimate source of the real-world detail that makes a recommendation convincing.

The useful examples are structural rather than branded. A retail sector whose trade has a visible seasonal pattern around the summer period. Businesses whose cost base moves with commercial rent cycles. Firms serving a population with high turnover, where customer retention behaves differently from a stable market. Importers and distributors exposed to shipping costs and to currency where a peg removes one source of variation. Service businesses in a market with intense competition for a similar customer.

Those observations attach well to specific question types: external influences, location decisions, market research and segmentation, cash-flow pressure, and almost any recommendation question needing a condition. A student who writes about rent as a fixed cost that genuinely moves, or about seasonality they have watched, is giving an examiner a reason to believe the analysis rather than a recited example.

Two cautions. Do not name a company and attribute figures or strategies to it from memory, because an invented number is worse than a general observation. And do not let the local detail replace the theory: the mark scheme still wants the concept, the application and the consequence, in that order, and an answer that is all anecdote scores below one that is all theory. The local material is there to anchor an argument, not to be the argument.

08

What business support costs in Dubai, and the rules it works inside

Published rates read in October 2026: EdFlik lists online tuition from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52; Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150; TutorChase quotes AED 270 for specialist work; the Bestimate rate survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above; BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Monthly packages advertised in the market include AED 799 for eight online sessions.

Business allocates across those bands cleanly. The terminology bank belongs with the student or at the bottom tier, because it needs administration. The calculation block can sit at the lower band once the formulae are taught, since the work is timed repetition with determinate answers. Application-tally marking, case-study technique and the evaluation block need someone who knows what the mark scheme pays for, which is the qualified band at AED 150-300. A sequenced plan is therefore a modest number of qualified-band hours.

The in-home comparison is the same as elsewhere in this market: the Bestimate survey puts qualified in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted at AED 200-500, against AED 150-300 for comparable work online. The premium pays for a commute. For business the shared screen also keeps every highlighted script in a file, so a tally of two in week one can be set beside a tally of nine in week six. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

Three rules of record. Private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years through MoHRE's own service with a stated two-working-day completion time; tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published fine schedule. Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes belong to Cambridge and Pearson and are referenced and linked rather than reproduced. And IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, and operates no UAE office, centre or branch.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Online delivery means the specification picks the tutor rather than the drive. What the postcode changes is when a student can sit a ninety-minute case-study paper without being interrupted.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Short commutes and apartment study space. Case-study annotation work needs a printed extract and a pen rather than silence, which makes an after-school slot workable even where a full timed paper is not.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills Estate

Large option blocks mean sizeable business classes. An individual application tally on each script is precisely what a class of thirty cannot produce per student, which is usually why families in this cluster look outside the school.

Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Damac Hills

Long bus routes and evening commitments. The timed case-study paper gets set for a weekend morning here and the session is spent on the marked version, the tally and the calculations that were skipped.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Established schools with specialist business teachers, so the gap a tutor fills is individual marking and the calculation habit rather than content coverage, which is already well handled in class.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

A dense mix of curricula with frequent mid-course transfer. A student arriving from a different system may have met the finance content with different terminology, so a terminology audit precedes any teaching.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Short commutes make a 4.30pm start realistic, which suits live annotation where the student highlights their own answer on a shared screen and sees the tally produced in front of them.

Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens and Dubai South

Newer schools where business may be taught alongside economics by one teacher. With less subject-specific internal moderation, an external mark against the published requirements carries proportionally more weight.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Established Dubai British-curriculum schools

Long-running business provision with specialist teachers and years of results history. Families here usually buy individual marking with the application tally rather than teaching, because the teaching is in place and the gap is per-student feedback.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the specification code and the last marked script

Email the school's exams officer for the code — Cambridge 0450 or Pearson Edexcel 4BS1 — and attach a photograph of the most recent marked case-study answer. The script is where the diagnosis comes from, because the application tally can be produced from work the student has already done.

  2. 02

Free 30-minute trial lesson, one per family

Live video with the matched tutor, no card details taken, no obligation. It is spent highlighting the student's own answer for application and producing the tally in front of them, because that number is the product and seeing it is usually the moment the subject starts to make sense.

  3. 03

    Three baseline counts

The application tally from one case-study answer, the attempted-against-available calculation count from the same script, and a written terminology test scored out of around fifty. Three numbers, dated. They decide which blocks get bought and which get handed back to the student.

  4. 04

    Hand back the terminology bank

Around fifty terms in specification phrasing, tested in written five-minute sets two or three times a week and scored by the student or a parent. Building the list is tutoring work; running the tests is not, and charging a qualified rate for the latter would be charging for the wrong thing.

  5. 05

Weekly marked script with the tally reported

A case-study question set sat between sessions and marked beforehand, with every sentence highlighted for application and the tally reported alongside the calculation count. Both go to the parent the same evening, and both are compared with the baseline each week.

  6. 06

    Case-study routine before timed papers

Six sessions drilling the five-minute reading and annotation routine, with timed full papers starting only once it is automatic. A timed paper sat without the routine measures the absence of a routine, which is information the family already had.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The tally is reported, not described

Every marked script carries a count of applied sentences against total sentences. A mid-range script often returns one or two in twelve, and that number is something a student can change deliberately in a way a mark and a sense of unfairness are not.

Skipped calculations are counted

Determinate marks are the most reliable on the paper and the most commonly abandoned under time. Recording attempted against available each week changes behaviour faster than any amount of advice, because the number is uncomfortable.

Evaluation is drilled as four checkable elements

Case applied, counter applied, recommendation made, condition drawn from the case. Marked against those four, a student can see what is missing. 'Develop your judgement' is not an instruction anyone can convert into a sentence.

The case-study routine comes before timed papers

Half the Cambridge grade sits in a paper whose preparation is a reading habit rather than content revision. Six sessions on the five-minute annotation routine, then timed practice, produces a different result from six timed papers.

The terminology bank is handed back

Around fifty terms tested in written sets and scored by the student. Building the list from the specification is expert work; administering the tests is not, so it is not sold as tutoring time.

Local observation used as an anchor, not a substitute

Seasonal trade patterns, rent cycles, high customer turnover and import exposure are real conditions a Dubai student can use in recommendation questions. Used to support the concept and the consequence rather than to replace them, which is where anecdote-heavy answers go wrong.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Why does my child know business theory and still score in the middle?+

Because business mark schemes pay more for theory used on the business in the question than for theory recalled correctly. An accurate paragraph about the advantages of a private limited company earns a fraction of what the same paragraph earns when it is about the private limited company in the case. The test takes two minutes: read a marked answer with a highlighter and mark every sentence containing a case-specific detail — the name, the market, the problem, a figure from the table. A mid-range script frequently returns one or two applied sentences in twelve.

What is an application tally and how is it used?+

It is a count of sentences in the student's own answer that refer to something specific about the business in the question, set against the total number of sentences. It is produced on every marked script and recorded with a date. It works because it is actionable: a tally of two can be improved deliberately by naming the business, using its stated circumstances and attaching the consequence to it, where a middling mark cannot be improved by any specific act. Students argue with it for about two sessions and then start producing it themselves.

Why do students skip the calculations in IGCSE business papers?+

Because they assume the written answers carry the grade and the arithmetic is incidental. It is the reverse of the truth. Break-even, contribution, profit margins, cash-flow closing balances, market share and ratios have determinate right answers, which makes them the most reliable marks on a paper where everything else is judged against a mark scheme. The fix is a count rather than a lecture: recording calculations available against calculations attempted each week usually changes behaviour by the fourth week, because the number is harder to ignore than advice.

What does an IGCSE business evaluation answer need?+

Four elements. The case for, applied to this business. The case against, applied to this business. A recommendation stated plainly. And the condition the recommendation depends on, drawn from the case rather than from general theory — the firm's cash position as given, the size of its market, whether it competes on price or quality, how long it can wait for a return. A balanced list ending in 'it depends on the situation' has the shape of a judgement with none of its substance, and it will not reach the top band however accurate the content.

How should a student approach an unseen business case study?+

With a pen, before writing anything. On the first read, underline what the business does, its ownership type, its size and its market. Circle every number. Mark the problem the case is built around, because the high-tariff question is usually about it. Note anything that looks like a constraint, since constraints are what evaluation conditions are made from. Then read the questions and go back to the annotation. Students without a routine read once, start answering, and return to the text repeatedly under time, which costs minutes and produces answers that cite the case less.

How much of the Cambridge 0450 grade is the case study?+

Fifty per cent, with the short-answer and data-response paper carrying the other fifty, and both papers running an hour and a half. The equal split means neither can be sacrificed, and in practice the case-study paper is the one students prepare least for, because preparing properly means drilling a reading routine rather than revising content. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Business 4BS1 also splits across two ninety-minute papers at equal weight with its own content distribution, so the first step either way is confirming the code with the exams officer.

Can a Dubai student use local businesses in IGCSE business answers?+

Yes, and the useful examples are structural rather than branded. A retail sector with a visible seasonal pattern around the summer period. Cost bases that move with commercial rent cycles. Firms serving a population with high turnover, where retention behaves differently from a stable market. Importers exposed to shipping costs. Those attach well to external influences, location decisions, cash-flow pressure and recommendation questions. Two cautions: do not name a company and attribute remembered figures to it, and do not let the observation replace the concept, the application and the consequence.

Is IGCSE business studies a good option in a Dubai school?+

It suits students who are prepared to be specific. Much of the grade is mechanical — terminology in the right form, determinate calculations, a reading routine, a four-part evaluation shape — which means a disciplined student can score well without unusual aptitude. It suits less well a student who writes fluently in generalities, because fluency is the exact failure mode the mark scheme penalises. Where a school offers both business studies and economics, the overlap in market, cost and external-influence content is substantial and worth planning around rather than revising twice.

How long does it take for an application tally to rise?+

Four to six weeks in most cases, because it is a production habit rather than a knowledge gap. The sequence is predictable: the first session is spent in mild disbelief, because the content was correct and the student cannot initially see what is missing; the second is spent rewriting three sentences to apply; by the fourth week the tally is rising and by the sixth the student is doing their own highlighting. The real test is a case-study answer written after Dubai's long December break, because a habit that survives three weeks off is a habit.

Should Year 10 or Year 11 be the focus for business tutoring?+

Year 10 for the application habit, Year 11 for technique. The habit of applying every point to the named business takes months to build and is examined identically in every later topic, so building it early compounds. Year 11 priorities are narrower and more immediate: the five-minute case-reading routine, the four-part evaluation shape, and the calculation count. A Year 11 start is still worthwhile — both of those are six-session blocks with visible results — but a Year 10 start means the Year 11 work begins from a tally that is already moving.

What does an IGCSE business tutor cost in Dubai?+

Published rates read in October 2026 put budget online provision at AED 33-52 at Tutopiya and AED 45-65 at EdFlik, a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150-300 with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150, specialist work at AED 270 at TutorChase, and premium named listings at AED 650. Business allocates cleanly: terminology testing belongs with the student, timed calculation repetition can sit at the lower band once the formulae are taught, and application-tally marking, case technique and evaluation need the qualified band. A sequenced plan is a modest number of qualified-band hours.

Does online tuition suit a case-study subject like business?+

It suits it well. The case extract and the student's own answer sit side by side on a shared screen, highlights go on in a second colour while the student watches, and every marked version is saved so a tally of two in week one can be set beside a tally of nine in week six. A script highlighted in pen and carried away cannot be compared in March. The published cost difference also runs one way: AED 180-350 for qualified in-home work against AED 150-300 online. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service.

When are IGCSE business exams sat by candidates in Dubai?+

Cambridge runs a June series and a November series and UAE candidates sit those two; the February/March series is offered to India only, so a March date on a tutoring site belongs to another country's calendar. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. One administrative point matters as much as the dates: every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for the zone and cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one.

Can a tutor help with business coursework or a controlled assessment?+

Within a boundary that should be agreed in writing before the first session. A tutor may teach the skills the task requires, discuss the student's plan, question their choices and comment on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write any part of it, rewrite a draft into its final form, or supply text or data for submission. Where a school operates such a component the consequence of crossing that line falls on the student rather than the provider, which is why the boundary belongs in writing rather than in an understanding.

What if no business specialist is free for our specification in Dubai?+

You should be told, with the options named rather than a general humanities tutor quietly substituted. Business requests in this emirate concentrate in the spring term of Year 11, and a tutor who has not taught the specification will not know what the mark scheme pays for in an application or analysis question, which is the whole basis of the tally. The honest choices are a wait with a date attached, a tutor based outside the UAE delivering on the same live video platform and on Gulf Standard Time, or a referral elsewhere. No competitor page in this market discloses a coverage limit.

Highlight one old answer tonight

Before buying anything, take your child's most recent marked business answer and highlight every sentence that refers to something specific about the business in the question. Count the highlights against the total. If the count is one or two in twelve, you have found the grade, and the repair is a production habit rather than a content course. Email the school for the specification code, send the script, take the free 30-minute trial lesson, and ask for the application tally and the calculation count in writing after every session.
