IB MYP Chemistry Home Tutor in Dubai

Families looking for an IB MYP chemistry home tutor in Dubai usually want someone at the table with a set of test tubes. The marks are not there. MYP chemistry is won on mole arithmetic, on what a student does with titre values, on whether a plan names its hazards, and on whether a reflection cites a real source. This page takes each of those apart and says what one session changes. Teaching is one-to-one over live video; IB Gram runs home visits in India only.

  • Mole arithmetic, titration processing and hazard statements taken separately
  • Criterion D contexts drawn from the UAE rather than from a search result
  • Work on your child's own titration table, plan and marked script
  • One-to-one over live video, timed to the Dubai school week

Chemistry marks are not lost at the bench, they are lost on the page afterwards

A parent watching a child struggle with chemistry reasonably concludes that chemistry needs demonstrating, and starts looking for someone to bring equipment to the house. It is an understandable instinct and it aims at the wrong target. MYP chemistry practical work happens at school, supervised, with school reagents, and it is assessed through what the student writes before and after it. Criterion B marks the plan. Criterion C marks the processing. Criterion D marks the reflection. None of those three is improved by a demonstration on a kitchen worktop.

What does improve them is specific and repeatable. A plan that names hazard and risk for each substance used, rather than ending with a line about wearing goggles. A titration table that discards the rough titre, keeps concordant results within a stated range and averages only those. A rate calculated from the gradient of a gas-volume curve rather than read off a single point. A mole conversion done before anything else, in writing, with units carried through. A reflection that cites one real source with a publisher and a date. Each of those is teachable in a session or two.

The quantitative spine is the part Dubai families most often underestimate. Four skills carry most MYP 4 and 5 chemistry marks: converting between mass and moles, using a balanced equation's coefficients as a ratio, calculating and using concentration, and averaging titres correctly. A student missing one of them will appear weak at rates of reaction, at neutralisation, at reacting masses and at anything on an exam paper with numbers in it. Topic-by-topic tutoring will treat four symptoms. The cause is one gap, and it is cheaper to fix at the source.

On the home-tutor question itself we should be plain. In-home chemistry tuition is available in this market, with published Dubai rates of roughly AED 180 to AED 350 an hour on Bestimate's 2026 table and independent listings up to AED 500, the travel carried inside the fee. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE. In-home teaching is a service we offer only in India. For UAE families everything is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the school week.

For chemistry in particular that is not a compromise, and the safety point is worth stating directly. Reagents belong in a school laboratory with ventilation, supervision and disposal arrangements, and a tutor arriving with chemicals is a worse idea than it sounds. Meanwhile a shared screen does the thing chemistry marking actually requires: the task sheet, the rubric, the student's titration table and a live spreadsheet open together, with the mole conversion typed out where both people can see it go wrong.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry appears under different names and different levels of quantitative demand across a Dubai school career. What follows is what each stage asks the student to write, since writing is where the marks are awarded.

MYPAges 11-14 · MYP 1-3

Chemistry inside integrated sciences

Particle model, states of matter, separation techniques, acids and alkalis qualitatively, and simple reaction types. Written demands are modest and heavily scaffolded: the table is often drawn, the variables often given. Marks go on precision rather than structure, chiefly units and the correct use of chemical names.

Dubai cohorts arrive in MYP 1 from the PYP and from British and Indian primaries, and the difference shows in how comfortable students are writing their own method. The habit worth installing at this stage is writing state symbols and units as the work is done, because it is almost free now and expensive to retrofit in MYP 4.

MYPAges 14-16 · MYP 4-5

MYP Chemistry as a separate subject

Bonding and structure, the mole and quantitative chemistry, rates of reaction, energetics in outline, acids and bases with titration, and introductory organic chemistry. Scaffolding is withdrawn: the student writes the hypothesis with a particle-level mechanism, names the hazards, chooses the processing and defends the conclusion.

This is the band Dubai families ask about, and the titration investigation is the piece of work that most often arrives with a disappointing mark attached. In nearly every case the chemistry was performed correctly and the titre handling, the averaging rule and the concluding sentence were not written the way the descriptors require.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Standard or Higher Level, with an internal assessment designed by the student and externally examined papers. Concentration, equilibrium, energetics and organic mechanisms all assume the mole arithmetic MYP 5 introduced, and uncertainty is assessed explicitly rather than mentioned in passing.

Students in Dubai aiming at medicine or engineering abroad often need Higher Level Chemistry, and the MYP criterion C record is the most useful predictor available. Secure recall with weak independent processing is the profile that struggles first, because the internal assessment arrives before the content is finished.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE Chemistry

Where a Dubai student sits IGCSE Chemistry such as Cambridge 0620 rather than completing MYP 5, assessment is terminal and externally marked, with no criterion coursework. The quantitative content overlaps closely with MYP 4 and 5; the written demands around planning and evaluation do not.

Transfers in both directions are routine here, since British-curriculum schools hold 37 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment. Cambridge runs June and November series and allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, with the zone timetable governing the dates, so a transfer needs the receiving school's exams officer involved early.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below is MYP chemistry written as the work a session actually does, with the marks each piece protects. Every line can be checked against your child's own returned work this evening.

Mass to moles and moles to mass

MYP 4-5

Dividing mass by relative formula mass and the reverse, written out with units rather than done mentally. The commonest single failure in MYP chemistry, and the dependency behind reacting masses, concentration and almost every quantitative examination question.

Concentration in moles per cubic decimetre

MYP 4-5

Converting cubic centimetres to cubic decimetres before dividing, which is where most answers go wrong by a factor of a thousand. The habit that fixes it is converting volume first, on a separate line, before any division happens.

Balanced equations as a working ratio

MYP 4-5

Most students balance competently and then ignore the coefficients when calculating. Teaching the ratio step explicitly, moles of A to moles of B before any mass is calculated, recovers marks across reacting mass and titration questions alike.

Titration technique and titre handling

MYP 4-5

Discarding the rough titration, judging which results are concordant, averaging only those, and recording to the resolution of the burette. Rarely taught explicitly and frequently assessed, which makes it the highest-value hour in MYP 4 chemistry.

Rates of reaction and the gradient

MYP 4-5

Collision theory explanations plus the gradient of a gas-volume or mass-loss curve. The chemistry is usually understood and the gradient is usually read from one point, which is a graph error that costs criterion C marks on every rates investigation.

Energetics and the sign convention

MYP 5

Exothermic and endothermic changes and energy level diagrams. The error is almost always the sign rather than the concept, which means a single session with several worked diagrams usually settles it for good.

Hazard, risk and a safe method

MYP 4-5 · criterion B

Naming the hazard of each substance, the risk it creates in this specific procedure, and the control that reduces it. A method ending with wear goggles is a middle-band method; one that names dilute acid, splash risk to eyes and the control that addresses it is not.

Criterion C processing in chemistry

MYP 4-5 · 0-8

Averaging concordant values, converting mass change into moles, calculating a rate, presenting results to a consistent resolution, and writing a conclusion that names the hypothesis. The largest pool of recoverable marks in the subject.

Criterion D reflection with UAE contexts

MYP 4-5 · 0-8

Applying chemistry to a named local problem and documenting sources properly. Desalination brine, refrigerants in district cooling, construction dust, plastics in Gulf waters and treated effluent reuse are all genuinely local and all under-used.

Chemical language and state symbols

MYP 1-5

Formulae with correct subscripts, state symbols in equations, and units on every quantity. Small, repeated losses that are invisible in one script and significant across a year, which is why this is drilled early rather than revised late.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of chemistry support, chosen by what the returned work shows. All are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own documents on the shared screen.

Quantitative foundation, four to six sessions

Mass to moles, moles to mass, concentration with the volume conversion done first, and the balanced-equation ratio step. Drilled inside real chemistry questions rather than as abstract arithmetic, with the student writing their own one-page reference card by the end of the block.

  • Fixed length, so the commitment is known in advance
  • Units written on every line, not added at the end
  • Volume converted before any division, every time
  • Ends when accuracy holds under timed conditions

Investigation write-up support

Two to four sessions around a current chemistry investigation, from the task sheet to the student's final draft. The plan is checked for hazard, risk and control; the data is processed live; the conclusion and evaluation are separated. The student writes every word that is submitted.

  • Starts from the school's own task sheet and rubric
  • Hazard and risk written per substance, not as a general line
  • Titres or mass changes processed live in a spreadsheet
  • Feedback on the student's draft; nothing supplied for submission

Weekly term support with marked work

A standing slot following the school's chemistry sequence, with a marked piece every second session. Suits students whose arithmetic holds but who need bonding, energetics or organic chemistry taught properly, where the content is genuinely conceptual.

  • Follows the school's unit order rather than a generic scheme
  • A marked piece every fortnight with written comments
  • Pause during school examination weeks
  • Reschedules accepted until the previous evening

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IB MYP chemistry home tutor in Dubai can and cannot do

  • Practical work stays at school, supervised, with school reagents
  • Criterion B and C marks are awarded on the plan and the processing
  • A shared screen holds the rubric, the readings and a live calculation together
  • In-home visits are offered by IB Gram in India only

The search assumes a tutor with apparatus. The programme assumes a school laboratory. MYP chemistry practical work is performed at school, under supervision, with the school's reagents and its disposal and ventilation arrangements, and it is assessed through what the student writes around it. A tutor who proposes to bring chemicals into a Dubai apartment is proposing something neither the programme nor common sense supports, and nothing in the mark scheme rewards it.

So the honest division of labour runs like this. The school does the practical. The tutor does the design beforehand and the processing afterwards, which is where criterion B and criterion C marks are awarded. The table sets out each practical skill, what it looks like at school, what a visiting tutor could realistically add, and what a shared screen does better. For most rows the shared screen wins, because the work is a document, a table of readings and a calculation rather than a demonstration.

There is one row where a visiting tutor has a genuine advantage, which is a very young or easily distracted student who needs physical presence to stay on task. That is a real consideration and it is worth paying for if it applies. It is not a chemistry consideration, though, and the published Dubai premium for it, roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel inside the fee, buys presence rather than subject expertise. IB Gram does not provide in-home visits in the UAE; that service runs only in India, and for Dubai families teaching is one-to-one over live video.

The mole: the arithmetic that decides whether MYP chemistry works

  • Write the unit on every line, including intermediate values
  • Calculate relative formula mass from the periodic table, do not recall it
  • Use the balanced equation as a mole ratio before converting back to mass
  • Convert cubic centimetres to cubic decimetres on a separate line, first

If a student is weak at reacting masses, at concentration, at titration processing and at rate calculations, that is not four problems. It is one problem appearing four times, and the problem is the mole. Converting between mass and moles using relative formula mass is the single dependency behind the whole quantitative half of MYP 4 and 5 chemistry, and a student who performs it hesitantly will fail at everything built on top of it while appearing to have a general chemistry weakness.

The fix is procedural and it is quick. Write the quantity with its unit. Write the relative formula mass, calculated from the periodic table rather than remembered. Divide, with the unit of the answer written down. Then use the balanced equation's coefficients as a ratio to find moles of the other substance, and only then convert back to mass. Five lines, always in the same order, written out even when the student thinks they can do it mentally. Mental arithmetic is where the factor-of-ten errors come from.

Concentration is the same procedure with one extra trap. Volumes arrive in cubic centimetres and concentration is in moles per cubic decimetre, so the volume conversion has to happen on its own line before any division. Students who skip that line produce answers out by a factor of a thousand and accept them, because they have no expectation of what the answer should be. We teach a magnitude estimate first: should this be about a tenth of a mole or about a hundred. That single habit catches most of the remaining errors.

03

Titration data: what criterion C actually wants from a set of titres

The titration investigation is the piece of MYP 4 chemistry work most likely to come back with a mark that surprises the family, and the reason is almost always that nobody taught titre handling explicitly. The practical was performed well. The chemistry was right. The table and the averaging were written the way a sensible person would write them rather than the way the descriptors require, and criterion C marks the table.

The sequence the descriptors reward is specific. The rough titration is recorded and then excluded from the average, with a sentence saying why. The remaining titres are examined for concordance within a stated range, commonly 0.10 cubic centimetres, and only concordant values are averaged. Readings are recorded to the resolution of the burette, consistently, including trailing zeros. The mean titre is then used in the calculation, and the calculation is shown with units on every line. The table below sets out each step against what students typically do instead.

What makes this such good value as a session is that it transfers completely. Every titration the student performs for the rest of the programme, and in Diploma Programme Chemistry afterwards, uses the same handling. One hour on a returned titration write-up, redrafting the student's own table and recalculating from the corrected mean, usually moves criterion C by a band and never needs repeating. It is also the clearest possible demonstration to a parent of what a session does, because the before and after sit on one page.

TITRE HANDLING — WHAT STUDENTS DO AND WHAT THE DESCRIPTORS WANT
StepWhat students usually doWhat earns the marksWhy it matters
The rough titrationAveraged in with the rest, or omitted silentlyRecorded, excluded from the mean, with one sentence saying whyShows deliberate method rather than tidy arithmetic
Judging concordanceAll remaining titres averaged regardless of spreadOnly values within a stated range, commonly 0.10 cm3, averagedThis is the reliability judgement criterion C is looking for
Recording resolutionValues written to inconsistent decimal placesEvery titre to the burette's resolution, trailing zeros keptInconsistent resolution reads as careless measurement
Calculating the meanMean taken, then rounded earlyMean carried at full precision into the calculation, rounded at the endEarly rounding changes the final answer and loses accuracy marks
Using the meanSubstituted with no working shownVolume converted, moles found, equation ratio applied, units on every lineWorking carries method marks even when the final figure slips
04

Balanced equations: coefficients are a ratio, not decoration

  • Label the coefficients as moles, not as numbers in a puzzle
  • Work a one-to-one and a one-to-two example side by side
  • Always convert reactant to moles, apply the ratio, then convert to mass
  • The same habit is what makes limiting-reagent questions tractable later

Almost every MYP 4 student can balance an equation. Far fewer use the balanced equation when calculating, which is a strange gap and a very common one. Asked how much product forms from a given mass of reactant, students convert the reactant to moles correctly and then convert straight back to mass using the product's formula mass, skipping the ratio entirely. The answer is wrong by exactly the factor the coefficients would have supplied.

The reason, as far as we can tell from working with students in this city, is that balancing is taught as a puzzle and calculating is taught as a procedure, and nobody joins them. The join takes one session. Take a balanced equation the student has already written, label the coefficients as moles rather than as numbers, and work two calculations side by side: one where the ratio is one to one and one where it is one to two. Seeing the same procedure produce different answers because of the ratio is what makes the step stick.

The same gap damages limiting-reagent questions, which appear in outline in MYP 5 and properly in Diploma Programme Chemistry. A student who does not treat coefficients as a ratio cannot determine which reactant runs out first, because the comparison is a ratio comparison. Fixing the ratio habit in MYP 4 therefore pays twice: once in the immediate reacting-mass questions, and again two years later when limiting reagents arrive with no time allowed for revisiting the basics.

05

Criterion D in chemistry: six UAE contexts and the sources to cite

Criterion D asks the student to apply chemistry to a specific problem or issue, discuss the implications of using science to address it, and document sources correctly. Students in Dubai routinely choose a global topic from the first page of search results, write generally about plastic or climate, and land in the middle bands because the discussion could have been written anywhere by anyone. The upper bands reward specificity, and specificity is available locally for free.

The table lists six contexts that are genuinely local, each with the chemistry inside it and the kind of implication worth discussing. Desalination is the obvious one and still under-used: the chemistry of brine concentration and the energy required per cubic metre of fresh water are both real chemistry and visibly relevant to a country that produces much of its drinking water this way. Refrigerants in district cooling, construction dust composition, treated effluent reuse in landscaping, panel soiling and cleaning chemistry, and corrosion in a humid coastal atmosphere all work similarly.

Then the documentation, which sinks more good criterion D work than weak chemistry does. Sources must be cited consistently in the school's required style, in the text as well as in the list at the end. One source with a named publisher and a date outscores four uncited assertions. This is also where academic-honesty boundaries matter: a tutor questions the argument, points at an unsupported claim and explains how to cite it properly. A tutor never supplies sentences for a student to submit. Every word of an MYP task, and of a Personal Project, must be the student's own.

06

Rates of reaction: a graph problem wearing a chemistry costume

  • Rate is a gradient: a change divided by a change, read off the axes
  • Use two widely spaced points on the line, not two data points
  • Calculate an initial rate for each curve, then compare them numerically
  • Describing which curve was faster is observation, not processing

Rates of reaction is the MYP chemistry topic where students most often understand the chemistry and still lose the marks. Collision theory is usually secure: more concentrated means more frequent collisions, hotter means more energetic collisions, smaller pieces mean more surface area, a catalyst lowers the energy barrier. Asked to explain any of those, a well-taught MYP 4 student answers correctly. Asked to find the rate from their gas-volume curve, the same student reads one point and divides.

The rate is a gradient, and a gradient is a change divided by a change. On a gas-volume curve the initial rate is the gradient of the tangent at the start, which most MYP schemes simplify to the gradient over the first interval, read with two widely spaced points on the line rather than two data points. Students who have met gradients in mathematics often do not transfer the skill, because here the axes have units and the answer has a chemical name, so we teach it on the student's own curve.

The second loss in this topic is the comparison. A rates investigation usually produces several curves at different concentrations, and criterion C wants the relationship described and quantified, not just observed. Saying that the higher concentration reacted faster earns little; calculating the initial rate for each curve and showing how the rate changes with concentration is the processing step the descriptors describe. That is one session's work on a returned investigation and it generalises to every rates task afterwards.

07

Hazard, risk and control: what a safe method must actually say

  • Name the substance, its hazard, the risk in this procedure, and the control
  • Goggles and a lab coat alone are a precaution, not a risk assessment
  • Say what happens if the risk materialises
  • Include disposal of residues; it is part of a safe method

Criterion B requires a method that is safe as well as replicable, and this is the strand where a whole band is routinely lost to a single missing sentence. The typical MYP 4 plan ends with a line about wearing safety goggles and a lab coat. That is a precaution, not a risk assessment, and it earns little because it would be true of any practical in any subject.

What the upper bands describe is specific to the substances in this procedure. Name the substance. Name its hazard, for example that dilute hydrochloric acid is irritant. Name the risk created by this particular procedure, for example splashing into the eyes while filling a burette at eye level. Then name the control that reduces it, which might be filling the burette with a funnel below eye level, and say what to do if it happens anyway. Four short clauses per substance, and a plan that reads as though the student has thought about their own experiment rather than copied a template.

There is a second element students almost always omit, which is disposal. A plan that produces a neutralised salt solution or an acidic residue should say how it is dealt with, because disposal is part of a safe method and it is easy to write once you know it is wanted. These are not chemistry insights, they are writing instructions, and that is exactly why they are cheap to teach and expensive to leave alone. One session on a returned plan, rewritten by the student with hazard, risk, control and disposal for each substance, usually fixes the strand permanently.

08

MYP 5 chemistry into Diploma Programme Chemistry: four things to fix first

  • Mole and concentration fluency, including the volume conversion, to automaticity
  • Significant figures and instrument resolution, both assessed directly in the Diploma
  • A research question answerable with the school's own apparatus
  • Processing data without being told which calculation to apply

The step into Diploma Programme Chemistry is steeper than the step into DP Biology, and the reason is quantitative. The mole arithmetic MYP 5 introduces is assumed from the first week, concentration and dilution calculations appear immediately, uncertainty is assessed explicitly rather than mentioned, and the internal assessment requires the student to design something answerable with school apparatus and to process its data unaided.

Four things are therefore worth fixing in the final MYP 5 terms, and all four are cheaper now than in the middle of a Diploma year with five other subjects competing. First, mole and concentration fluency to the point of automaticity, including the volume conversion. Second, significant figures and instrument resolution, since both are assessed directly in the Diploma. Third, writing a research question narrow enough to answer with the equipment a school actually has, which is the most common internal assessment failure. Fourth, processing data without being told which calculation to use.

If you are weighing DP Chemistry against A Level Chemistry at the end of MYP 5 in Dubai, the useful evidence is the criterion record rather than the overall grade. Strong criterion A with weak criterion C means secure recall and shaky independent processing, and that profile meets the hardest part of the Diploma first, because the internal assessment arrives before the content is complete. Ask the MYP coordinator for the strand marks, and treat them as information about independence rather than about how much chemistry the student knows.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities and what they change about a chemistry session

Teaching is delivered online, so an address in Dubai does not determine who teaches your child. It determines what hour works and what the local alternative would have cost. These notes come from arranging weekly slots across the city.

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

Close to several continuum campuses, so a titration write-up can be worked on the day the practical was done and the readings are still fresh in the student's memory. The most efficient chemistry sessions in the city happen here.

Dubai Marina, JBR and JLT

Apartment living where nobody should be handling reagents, and where a shared screen is simply the sensible venue. Later starts work better, and forty-five focused minutes beats a long evening session.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

Long cross-city commutes leave students tired by six, so we schedule titre processing and marked-script review on weekday evenings and keep new mole teaching for a weekend morning.

Arabian Ranches, The Springs and The Meadows

Where a visiting chemistry tutor is most expensive and least available, since the evening drive out and back consumes the slot. Online removes the distance and widens the choice to tutors who have marked criterion C work.

Dubai Hills Estate, Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Study rooms and reliable connections, so live spreadsheets and molecular viewers run without friction. Families here often plan chemistry support a full year ahead of the MYP 5 assessment.

The Sustainable City and Dubai South

Criterion D has an authentic context on the doorstep, from greywater treatment to solar panel soiling and recycled building materials, and a locally cited source outscores a generic global statistic every time.

Business Bay, DIFC and Downtown Dubai

Parents working late who rely on the written session note rather than attending. We send it the same evening, naming the skill drilled and what the next marked piece should show.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai continuum campuses running the MYP 4 titration investigation

Nearly every MYP 4 cohort in the city performs a titration or neutralisation investigation, and the returned work follows a pattern: competent practical technique, correct chemistry, and titre handling that was never taught explicitly. That one write-up is the most useful diagnostic document of the chemistry year.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the returned titration or rates write-up

Of all the documents a Dubai MYP chemistry student produces, the returned titration or rates investigation is the most diagnostic. A photograph with the rubric is enough. We read it before the first session and open on the titre handling or the gradient, which is usually where the marks went.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson, with the condition stated

One forty-five-minute online session at no charge, with no card details taken and nothing to cancel afterwards. The tutor works on the piece you sent and finishes with a written note naming the specific step that lost the marks. The note is yours whether or not anything follows it.

  3. 03

Fix the quantitative spine before the topics

Where the errors sit in mole conversion, the equation ratio or concentration, we drill those in a fixed block of four to six sessions inside real chemistry questions. The student writes their own reference card. Several topics usually improve at once, because one gap had been making all of them fail.

  4. 04

Redraft one returned piece against the descriptors

The student rewrites a previously marked investigation, adding hazard, risk, control and disposal, excluding the rough titre, averaging only concordant values and separating the conclusion from the evaluation. Two drafts on one page is the clearest evidence of progress available mid-term.

  5. 05

Review at half term and plan the interruptions

At half term we compare marked work against the baseline and recommend continuing, reducing to fortnightly or stopping. School examination weeks are pause weeks. During Ramadan, sessions move to post-Iftar or a late weekend morning and shorten to forty-five minutes. Planning that in advance is what keeps a term's plan intact.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The quantitative spine is diagnosed first

Four skills carry most MYP chemistry marks: mass to moles, the equation ratio, concentration with its volume conversion, and titre averaging. A student weak in one looks weak in four topics. We count the error types before recommending anything, and the answer is often a fixed six-session block rather than a year of weekly chemistry.

Work on the student's own readings

Sessions run on the titration table the student wrote and the curve they plotted, with the rubric open beside it on a shared screen. Redrafting a returned piece against the descriptors produces a before-and-after pair that a parent can read in two minutes without knowing any chemistry.

Local contexts for criterion D

Desalination brine, district cooling refrigerants, construction dust, treated effluent reuse, panel soiling and coastal corrosion are all genuinely local and all under-used. A reflection on one of them with a dated, named source outscores a generic global statistic, which is what most students submit instead.

The student writes every word

A tutor questions a plan, challenges a hazard statement, processes data alongside the student and gives written feedback on a draft. Nothing is supplied for submission, in an investigation, a Personal Project or anywhere else. Being explicit about that protects the student from a finding that lasts longer than any mark.

Honest about delivery and about claims

Teaching is one-to-one over live video, and in-home visits are a service IB Gram offers in India only. We hold no accreditation from KHDA, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson and claim none, and we publish no IB examination dates because the IB's own site cannot be verified automatically.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Will a chemistry tutor bring equipment to our home in Dubai?+

Not from IB Gram, and we would advise against it generally. MYP practical work belongs in a school laboratory with supervision, ventilation and proper disposal, and reagents in an apartment are a bad idea whatever the marking scheme says. We do not provide in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service runs only in India. For Dubai families teaching is one-to-one over live video. The marks in MYP chemistry are awarded on the plan, the processing and the reflection, and all three are written documents rather than demonstrations.

Why did my child lose marks on a titration they performed correctly?+

Because criterion C marks the table, not the technique. The sequence the descriptors want is specific: record the rough titration and exclude it from the mean with a sentence saying why, then average only titres that are concordant within a stated range, commonly 0.10 cubic centimetres, recorded consistently to the burette's resolution including trailing zeros, with the mean carried at full precision into the calculation. Most students average everything and round early. One session redrafting their own table usually moves the strand by a band and never needs repeating.

What does concordant actually mean in a MYP titration?+

Titres close enough together to be treated as agreeing, within a range the student states explicitly, commonly 0.10 cubic centimetres in school practice. The point is the judgement rather than the number: criterion C wants to see that the student examined the spread of their results and decided which were reliable, rather than averaging whatever appeared in the table. Ask your child to show you their titre values and tell you which ones they averaged and why. If the answer is all of them, that is the mark that went missing.

My child can balance equations but gets reacting mass questions wrong. Why?+

Because the coefficients are being treated as part of a puzzle rather than as a mole ratio. The student converts the reactant mass to moles correctly, then converts straight back to mass using the product's formula mass and skips the ratio, so the answer is wrong by exactly the factor the coefficients would have supplied. The fix takes one session: label the coefficients as moles and work a one-to-one example beside a one-to-two example, so the student sees the same procedure give different answers because of the ratio.

Why are my child's concentration answers out by a factor of a thousand?+

The volume conversion. Concentration is in moles per cubic decimetre and volumes arrive in cubic centimetres, so the conversion has to happen on its own line before any division. Students who do it mentally, or not at all, produce an answer a thousand times too large or too small and accept it, because they have no expectation of the right magnitude. We teach the conversion as a separate written line and add a magnitude estimate beforehand, which catches almost all of the remaining errors.

What should a safe method say in a MYP chemistry plan?+

Four clauses for each substance used. Name the substance. Name its hazard, for instance that dilute acid is irritant. Name the risk this specific procedure creates, such as splashing while filling a burette at eye level. Name the control that reduces it. Then say what to do if it happens anyway, and add how residues are disposed of. A plan that ends with wear goggles and a lab coat is giving a precaution rather than a risk assessment, and it sits in the middle bands for that reason alone.

How does a tutor help with rates of reaction if the practical is at school?+

By teaching the part that is marked. Collision theory explanations are usually secure in a well-taught MYP 4 cohort. The marks go missing on the curve: the rate is a gradient, read as a change divided by a change using two widely spaced points on the line, not one data point divided. Then criterion C wants the several curves compared numerically, with an initial rate calculated for each, rather than a sentence saying which went faster. Both are done live on the student's own graph.

Which local topics work best for a criterion D chemistry reflection?+

Six work well and are all under-used: desalination and brine disposal, refrigerants in district cooling, construction dust composition, treated effluent used for landscape irrigation, solar panel soiling and cleaning chemistry, and corrosion in a humid coastal atmosphere. Each contains real chemistry and has implications you can discuss for people living here, which is what the upper bands describe. Then cite one source with a named publisher and a date, in the school's referencing style, in the text as well as in the list.

Is organic chemistry worth tutoring in MYP 5 or can it wait?+

It is worth starting, though it is lower priority than the mole arithmetic. MYP 5 organic chemistry is mostly new vocabulary and pattern recognition, homologous series, naming simple alkanes and alkenes, and a few reactions, and it is the foundation of the most demanding section of Diploma Programme Chemistry. If the quantitative work is already secure, spending the final MYP 5 term on organic naming and simple mechanisms is a sound investment. If the mole arithmetic is still shaky, fix that first; organic chemistry without it leads nowhere.

How many sessions does the titration and processing work take?+

Usually two to three. One session redrafting a returned titration table, covering the rough titre, concordance, resolution and the carried mean. One on the calculation itself, with the volume conversion and the equation ratio written out line by line. Sometimes a third applying the same handling to a rates curve, since the processing logic is similar. It transfers completely to every titration the student performs afterwards, including in the Diploma Programme, which is why it is the best-value hour in MYP 4 chemistry.

Can a tutor check my child's chemistry investigation before they submit it?+

A tutor can read the draft, question the hypothesis, challenge the hazard statements, check that the processing matches the data and give written feedback against the descriptors. What a tutor must never do is supply any text that is submitted, in a chemistry investigation, a Personal Project or any assessed piece. Every word has to be the student's own. That boundary is not a formality: outsourced work is an academic-honesty breach with consequences for the student that outlast any criterion mark, and it is the practice this market's essay sellers depend on.

Is DP Chemistry a bigger step than DP Biology after MYP 5?+

Generally yes, and the reason is quantitative. Diploma Chemistry assumes the mole arithmetic from the first week, brings concentration and dilution calculations in immediately, assesses uncertainty and significant figures explicitly, and requires an internal assessment the student designs and processes unaided. A student whose MYP 5 criterion C record is weak meets the hardest part first. Ask the MYP coordinator for the strand marks before choosing, and read them as evidence about independent processing rather than about how much chemistry is known.

What should we fix in the final MYP 5 chemistry terms?+

Four things, roughly twelve sessions across two terms. Mole and concentration fluency to the point where the volume conversion happens automatically. Significant figures and instrument resolution, because both post-16 routes assess them directly. Writing a research question narrow enough to answer with the apparatus a school actually owns, which is the most common internal assessment failure. And processing data without being told which calculation to apply. All four cost far less now than in the middle of a Diploma year.

Do we need a tutor who has taught the specific exam board our school uses?+

For MYP work what matters is criterion experience rather than board familiarity, because schools write their own criterion tasks within the programme framework and the rubric wording differs by campus. Ask which criterion strands the tutor has marked and at which year group, and insist that sessions work from your school's task sheet rather than the tutor's own materials. If your child is sitting Cambridge or Pearson IGCSE Chemistry instead, then syllabus specificity matters and you should ask about the particular syllabus code.

Send the titration write-up and we will show you the step

The returned titration or rates investigation is the most useful document a Dubai MYP chemistry student produces, because the marks it lost are almost always in a step nobody taught: the rough titre averaged in, the concordance judgement never made, the mean rounded early, the gradient read off one point, the hazard line that says only goggles. Those are cheap to fix and they repeat on every piece of work until somebody points at them. Send a photograph with the rubric, take the free trial lesson, and read the written note. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with in-home visits offered only in India.
