IB MYP Biology Tutor in Dubai

An IB MYP Biology tutor in Dubai works on four criteria, not a syllabus checklist: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Each is marked out of eight. Most MYP students in Dubai lose their grade on the two criteria that involve designing an investigation and handling data, rather than on recall. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, built around your child's own returned criterion sheets, and the first lesson is free.

  • Marked against the four MYP Sciences criteria, each scored out of eight
  • Sessions timed to Gulf Standard Time, after the Dubai school run
  • Teaching starts from your child's own returned criterion sheets

What changes when Biology is marked by criteria

Parents searching for an IB MYP Biology tutor in Dubai almost always arrive with the same piece of paper: a report card showing a number between 1 and 7, with no explanation of how that number was reached. The number is not a percentage and it is not an average of test scores. It is the product of a 32-mark criterion total, built from four separate judgements a teacher makes about four different kinds of thinking. Until a family can see which of those four judgements is pulling the grade down, extra Biology revision is guesswork.

The four criteria in MYP Sciences are fixed. Criterion A is knowing and understanding, criterion B is inquiring and designing, criterion C is processing and evaluating, and criterion D is reflecting on the impacts of science. Each is marked on a 0 to 8 scale against published descriptors, and each has its own strands that a teacher ticks off task by task. A student who can name every organelle in a plant cell but cannot write a hypothesis with a measurable independent variable will sit at 7 on A and 3 on B, and the report will say 5 without telling you why.

This matters more in Biology than in the other science strands, because Biology in the MYP carries a heavy load of extended written response. The content itself feels accessible: digestion, transport systems, reproduction, ecosystems, genetics, classification. Students read it, recognise it, and assume they know it. Then an assessment asks them to design a fair test of the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis, control three variables, justify a sample size, and evaluate the reliability of their own data. The Biology knowledge is not the obstacle. The scientific method written in formal language is.

Dubai adds a second layer. Many MYP cohorts in the city are built from students who arrived mid-programme from a British, Indian or American system, where science was taught as content with end-of-topic tests. A child who moved into MYP Year 3 from a CBSE school has often never designed an investigation, never written a method in the passive voice, and never been asked what the social implications of gene editing might be. The content gap is small; the assessment-literacy gap is large, and it is invisible on a report card.

What a session does, therefore, is narrow. The tutor asks for the last two or three marked Biology tasks with the criterion sheets attached, reads the teacher's annotations, and identifies which criterion is costing marks and which strand inside it. Then the work is specific: rewriting one method until the variables are properly controlled, re-plotting one graph with correct axes and units, redrafting one evaluation paragraph until it names a source of error and explains its direction. Biology content gets taught where it is genuinely missing. The rest of the time goes on the skills the criteria actually reward.

Everything is delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not run in-home tutoring anywhere in the UAE, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation: a Dubai family gets a tutor who has taught MYP Sciences and marked to criterion descriptors, instead of whoever is available within a reasonable drive of their community.

  • Criterion A to D, each marked 0-8, giving a 32-mark total behind every MYP Biology grade
  • Criteria B and C are where most Dubai MYP Biology marks are lost, not criterion A
  • Teaching works from your child's returned task sheets and the teacher's own annotations
  • Biology sits inside integrated MYP Sciences in most Dubai schools, so unit titles vary
  • Sessions scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, typically between 16:00 and 20:30

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP Biology does not stand alone. It sits between the inquiry habits built in the PYP and the assessment machinery of the Diploma Programme, and a tutor who knows what comes next teaches the current year differently. Here is how each programme treats science, and what each means for a family in Dubai.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Science in the PYP arrives through transdisciplinary units rather than named subjects. Children investigate living things, habitats and life cycles inside themes such as how the world works and sharing the planet. There is no criterion marking and no formal science grade. What the PYP does build is the habit of asking a question, recording what happened and saying whether the answer was convincing, which is the raw material criterion B later formalises.

Dubai PYP cohorts feed into MYP Year 1 at a wide range of schools, and the handover is where the first science gap appears. A child who spent Year 6 on inquiry projects with no written method can find the MYP's formal laboratory report alien in the first term. Families who ask for support at this point usually need writing structure rather than Biology content.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP runs five years and assesses every subject group against four criteria scored 0-8. In Sciences, Biology is usually taught inside an integrated course alongside Chemistry and Physics, with units framed by key concepts, related concepts and global contexts. Year 5 adds the Personal Project and, in schools that register for it, on-screen eAssessment leading to the IB MYP Certificate. The grade on a report is a conversion of the criterion total, not a test average.

Dubai MYP schools differ sharply in how they split the sciences. Some run fully integrated Sciences to the end of Year 5; others separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics from Year 4 to ease the move into the Diploma. A tutor needs to know which model your child's school uses before the first session, because the unit titles, the assessment calendar and the criterion weighting all follow from it.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Diploma Programme replaces criterion marking with external examination papers plus an internally assessed scientific investigation. Biology is offered at Standard and Higher Level, with the same core and additional higher level material. Command terms tighten, data analysis becomes quantitative, and the internal assessment is a single independent investigation judged on personal engagement, exploration, analysis, evaluation and communication rather than on four reusable criteria.

Most Dubai MYP students who continue in the IB take Biology at either level in the Diploma, and the ones who find the jump manageable are those whose MYP criterion B and C marks were already strong. Diploma teachers in Dubai report the same recurring weakness at the start of Year 12: students who can recall biology but cannot write an evaluation that distinguishes random error from systematic bias.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme pairs a career-related study with a small number of Diploma courses, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. Students who want applied science alongside a vocational pathway, in health sciences or sports science for example, can keep a Diploma Biology course inside a CP framework rather than carrying a full Diploma load.

The CP is offered by a small number of Dubai schools and is often overlooked by families comparing options after MYP Year 5. For a student whose MYP Biology marks are sound but whose overall profile is uneven, it can be a better fit than a full Diploma. Any school's CP course list should be checked directly with its coordinator before plans are made.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A Biology problem in the MYP is frequently a writing problem, a mathematics problem or a research problem wearing a lab coat. These are the subject groups a Dubai MYP student is carrying at the same time, and the ones most likely to be implicated when Biology marks slide.

Sciences: Biology strand

MYP Years 1-5

Cells, transport systems, nutrition and digestion, respiration and gas exchange, reproduction, inheritance and variation, ecosystems and human impact. Marks are lost less on recall than on explaining a mechanism in sequence: students name the structures and skip the causal chain that links structure to function.

Sciences: integrated course

MYP Years 1-5, where schools do not separate the strands

Many Dubai schools assess a single Sciences grade covering Biology, Chemistry and Physics. One weak strand drags the whole criterion total down, and a report showing 4 in Sciences can conceal a 6 in Biology sitting next to a 2 in Physics. Unpicking that is the first job of a diagnostic session.

Scientific investigation skills

Criteria B and C, MYP Years 1-5

Hypothesis writing, variable control, sample size and repeats, table design, choice of graph, calculation of means, identification of anomalies, and evaluation of method. This is a transferable skill set assessed in every science unit, and it is where most of a Dubai MYP student's recoverable marks sit.

Mathematics

MYP Years 1-5

Rates, percentage change, ratio, scale, averages and graph interpretation all appear inside MYP Biology tasks. A student who cannot calculate a rate from a gradient will lose criterion C marks in a photosynthesis unit even with perfect biological understanding, which is why the two subjects are often supported together.

Language and Literature

MYP Years 1-5

Extended science responses are assessed partly on organisation and clarity. Students who write in fragments, or who cannot sustain a paragraph that states a claim and then supports it, carry that weakness straight into criterion D reflections on the social implications of biological science.

Individuals and Societies

MYP Years 1-5

Criterion D asks students to discuss the impacts of science on people and the environment. That is an Individuals and Societies skill: weighing competing interests, using evidence, acknowledging a counter-argument. Students strong in humanities often pick up these marks quickly once they are told the marks exist.

Design

MYP Years 1-5

The MYP Design cycle, inquiring and analysing through to evaluating, mirrors the structure of criterion B and C in Sciences. A student who has internalised the Design cycle already has the scaffolding for a laboratory investigation and simply needs the scientific vocabulary mapped onto it.

Language Acquisition

MYP Years 1-5, phases 1-6

Dubai MYP cohorts include many students working in English as an additional language. Biology carries dense technical vocabulary with near-identical word pairs, mitosis and meiosis, artery and arteriole, and phase-appropriate vocabulary work often lifts a Sciences criterion A mark faster than more content teaching.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP Years 1-5

Schools assess at least one interdisciplinary unit per year against its own criteria. Biology is a common partner, paired with Individuals and Societies on public health or with Design on sustainable packaging. Students often treat these as a bonus task and lose marks because they do not synthesise the two disciplines explicitly.

Personal Project

MYP Year 5

The Year 5 Personal Project runs alongside subject courses and competes for the same hours. Biology-themed projects on nutrition, disease or conservation are popular. A tutor's role here is process coaching on planning, sourcing and reflection; the product and the written report must be the student's own work throughout.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families use MYP Biology support, each suited to a different problem. The format matters less than matching it to what the criterion sheets are actually showing, and all three are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly criterion-led sessions

One 60-minute session a week through a term, each built around the most recent marked task. The tutor reads the criterion sheet before the lesson, teaches the strand that lost marks, and sets one short piece of writing to be marked before the next session. This is the format that moves a criterion total steadily rather than dramatically.

  • One criterion strand per session, named at the start of the lesson
  • Short written task between sessions, returned with annotations
  • Running record of criterion marks so progress is visible without a report card
  • Content teaching inserted only where a genuine knowledge gap shows

Investigation clinic

A short block of two to four sessions focused entirely on one laboratory investigation, from research question through to evaluation. Used when criteria B and C are the clear weakness and the next assessment is close. The student's own data and own write-up are the working material; the tutor teaches method, structure and the vocabulary of evaluation.

  • Research question narrowed until it names a measurable variable
  • Variable control, repeats and sample size argued rather than asserted
  • Table and graph conventions, units, uncertainty and anomaly handling
  • Evaluation structured around named sources of error and their direction

Transition block before Year 4 or the Diploma

A fixed set of sessions bridging a change of model: British Key Stage 3 into MYP Year 3, integrated Sciences into separate Biology in Year 4, or MYP Year 5 into Diploma Biology. The content overlap is mapped first so time goes only on what is genuinely new, which is usually assessment language rather than biology.

  • Side-by-side map of what the previous course covered and what the next assumes
  • Assessment vocabulary taught explicitly, criterion descriptors read aloud
  • One worked task in the new format before the student meets it at school
  • Honest finish point: the block ends when the gap is closed, not when a package expires

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The four MYP Sciences criteria, and what each one costs

  • Criterion A rewards biological knowledge; criteria B, C and D reward scientific method and writing
  • Each criterion is marked 0-8 against published strands, task by task
  • Two or three marked tasks are enough to see which strand is costing the grade
  • Your school's MYP coordinator holds the subject guide with the full descriptors

An MYP Biology grade is assembled from four separate marks out of eight. Criterion A, knowing and understanding, asks the student to recall and apply scientific knowledge and to analyse information to make scientifically supported judgements. Criterion B, inquiring and designing, asks them to explain a problem, formulate a testable hypothesis using scientific reasoning, explain how to manipulate variables and how enough relevant data will be collected, design a logical method, and work safely. Criterion C, processing and evaluating, covers presenting data, interpreting it, drawing a conclusion supported by scientific reasoning, evaluating the validity of hypothesis and method against the outcome, and suggesting improvements. Criterion D, reflecting on the impacts of science, asks them to explain the ways science is applied to address a specific problem, discuss the implications of using science to solve it, and apply scientific language and documentation conventions correctly.

Read that list and the diagnosis writes itself. Only criterion A rewards knowing biology. The other three reward thinking like an experimenter and writing like one. A Dubai student who revises by rereading notes and memorising diagrams is preparing for a quarter of the available marks and leaving the rest to chance. That is the single most common pattern in the marked work families send through, and it is why a session that simply covers more content rarely moves the grade.

The practical consequence is that a first session should not begin with biology at all. It begins with the criterion sheets from the last two or three assessed tasks, laid next to each other. A pattern appears within minutes: strong A marks and 3s on B, or a solid B with a C mark that collapses at the evaluation strand. That pattern, not the subject, determines what the next six weeks look like. Published descriptors for each criterion sit in the MYP Sciences subject guide held by every school's MYP coordinator, and a parent is entitled to ask for them.

02

From 32 marks to a number on a report card

  • A report grade is a band derived from a 32-mark criterion total, not a percentage
  • Ask a teacher which criteria are lowest, not what grade the child is on
  • Moving one criterion by three marks can be enough to change the band
  • Confirm the boundary version in use with your school's MYP coordinator

The conversion step is where most parent confusion lives. At the end of a reporting period, a teacher takes the best-fit mark for each of the four criteria, adds them to give a total out of 32, and reads that total against the MYP's published grade-boundary table to produce a grade from 1 to 7. The grade is therefore a band, not a score. Two students on 5 can be four marks apart, and a student can gain three marks across the year and see no change on the report at all.

This has three practical consequences for a family planning support. The first is that the useful question to ask a teacher is not what grade my child is on but which criteria are carrying the lowest marks. The second is that progress should be tracked at criterion level, because that is where improvement appears first. The third is that the distance to the next grade is often much smaller than a parent assumes: a student sitting at the bottom of band 4 needs one criterion to move from 3 to 6, which is one term of focused work on a single skill, not a wholesale rebuild of their biology.

The boundary table below is the standard conversion schools apply to the 32-mark total. Individual schools report at different points in the year and may use interim boundaries for internal assessments, so your child's MYP coordinator should confirm which version is in use for their cohort before you read too much into a single report. What does not vary is the structure: four criteria, eight marks each, one total, one band.

MYP CRITERION TOTAL TO REPORT GRADE - THE 1-32 BOUNDARY STRUCTURE
Report gradeCriterion total out of 32What the band usually looks like in BiologyTypical distance to the next band
728-32Secure across all four criteria, including investigation design and evaluationUsually one criterion resting at 6 rather than 8

519-23Content is sound; method and evaluation answers are thinFour or five marks, nearly all from criteria B and C
415-18Recall works, extended responses collapse once analysis is requiredA full band, reachable in a term of weekly criterion work
310-14Criterion A partial, criteria B to D largely unattemptedTwo bands; scientific method needs teaching from the beginning

Biology inside integrated Sciences: what Dubai schools actually teach

  • Unit titles follow key and related concepts, so the word Biology may not appear
  • Integrated reporting can hide a strong Biology strand behind a weak Physics one
  • Schools that split the sciences usually do so at MYP Year 4
  • eAssessment registration changes the whole shape of MYP Year 5

Very few Dubai MYP schools timetable a subject called Biology in the early years. The MYP Sciences subject group is normally delivered as one integrated course, with units built around key concepts such as change, relationships and systems, and related concepts such as balance, consequences, function, interaction and transformation. A unit might be called Balance in the Body or Consequences of Consumption, and a parent looking for the word Biology on a report will not find it. The biology is inside the units, distributed across the year.

A second variation matters even more. Some Dubai schools keep Sciences integrated and report a single grade through to the end of MYP Year 5. Others split the strands at Year 4, reporting separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics grades to smooth the transition into Diploma sciences. The two models produce very different reports and very different tutoring needs. Under the integrated model, a 4 in Sciences could be hiding a strong Biology performance next to a weak Physics one, and the first job is to separate them. Under the split model the diagnosis is already done, but the Year 4 jump in expectation is steeper because each strand now carries its own full criterion set.

There is a third possibility worth checking: schools that register for MYP eAssessment put Year 5 students through externally set on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios, leading to the IB MYP Certificate. Those schools run the final year to an external timetable with internal deadlines months ahead of it. Schools that do not register assess Year 5 entirely internally. Whether your child's school registers changes the shape of Year 5 completely, and it is the single most useful thing to establish before planning support for a Year 5 Biology student.

None of this is on a school website in enough detail to plan from. The reliable route is a direct question to the MYP coordinator: is Sciences integrated or split, at which year does it split, do you register for eAssessment, and may I see the criterion descriptors for Sciences. Four questions, one email, and the answers shape everything a tutor does.

04

The investigation write-up that decides criteria B and C

  • Criterion B is won or lost in the research question, hypothesis and method
  • Criterion C is won or lost in the graph, the conclusion and the evaluation
  • Human error is not a source of error and earns nothing
  • The student writes every draft; a tutor marks, explains and sets the rewrite

If one document decides an MYP Biology grade, it is the laboratory investigation report. Criterion B is awarded almost entirely on its opening pages and criterion C almost entirely on its closing ones, which means roughly half the available marks on a 32-mark total hang on a piece of writing most students treat as paperwork. The highest-value hour a Dubai MYP Biology student can spend is on the structure of that document.

The failures are consistent enough to list. Research questions are written as topics rather than questions, so there is nothing measurable to test: how does light affect plants, instead of how does the distance of a lamp from a pondweed sample affect the number of oxygen bubbles released per minute. Hypotheses state a direction without a reason, when criterion B explicitly wants scientific reasoning behind the prediction. Variables are listed in three columns and then not actually controlled in the method. Sample size and repeats are chosen silently, when a sentence explaining why five repeats rather than two is worth a mark on its own.

At the other end, criterion C losses are even more predictable. Graphs appear without units on the axes, or with a line of best fit forced through points that do not support one. Conclusions restate the data instead of explaining it with biology: the rate increased, rather than the rate increased because more light energy was available to drive the light-dependent reactions. Evaluations name human error, which is not a source of error, and stop there, when the mark is for identifying a specific weakness, explaining how it affected the result, and proposing a realistic improvement.

A tutor's work here is narrow and repetitive, which is why it is effective. One investigation, redrafted properly, teaches the template for every investigation that follows. The student brings their own data and their own draft; the tutor marks it against the criterion strands, explains each loss, and the student rewrites. Nobody writes the report for them, and no tutor should ever offer to: under IB academic honesty rules the work must be the student's own, and a report that is not is a malpractice risk for the student rather than a shortcut.

05

Command terms: the two words that decide the mark

MYP assessment tasks are built on command terms, and each term has a defined meaning published in the subject guide. State, outline, describe, explain, analyse, evaluate, discuss and justify ask for measurably different things. A student who answers every question with everything they know about the topic will score well on the few questions that happen to want that and poorly on the rest, and the pattern on their criterion sheets will look random when it is in fact entirely systematic.

In Biology the gap between describe and explain costs more marks than any other single confusion. Describe asks for an account of what happens; explain asks for the reasons why, the mechanism, the causal chain. A student describing gas exchange will list the alveoli, the capillaries and the thin walls. A student explaining it will say that the thin walls shorten the diffusion pathway, that the dense capillary network maintains a steep concentration gradient, and that ventilation refreshes the air in the alveoli to keep that gradient steep. Same knowledge, different answer, several marks apart.

Analyse and evaluate carry the same trap at the top of the mark range. Analyse asks the student to break material into parts and show relationships; evaluate asks for a judgement supported by evidence, with limitations acknowledged. In criterion D tasks on applications of biological science, a one-sided answer can be perfectly accurate and still sit at 3 or 4, because the descriptor wants implications discussed rather than benefits listed. Teaching the term, then re-answering a question the student has already attempted, is one of the fastest mark gains available in MYP Sciences.

The table below lists the terms that recur most in MYP Biology tasks and the answer pattern each one wants. It is worth printing and keeping next to the student while they work, at least until the distinctions become automatic.

What a Dubai MYP Biology session looks like, minute by minute

  • Opening five minutes: name the criterion and strand being worked on today
  • Middle forty: student rewrites their own work on a shared screen
  • Closing ten: one small task set, to be marked before the next session
  • Running criterion record kept, so progress is visible between reports

A 60-minute online session that works has a shape, and it is not a lecture. The first five minutes are spent on the marked work that arrived before the lesson, with the tutor naming the criterion and strand being targeted today. Saying it out loud matters: students who know they are working on criterion C evaluation rather than on photosynthesis in general behave differently for the next fifty minutes.

The middle forty minutes are student-active. The tutor shares the student's own script on screen and works through the loss points, but the student does the writing. A typical sequence is read the descriptor, read your answer, tell me which strand you have not met, now rewrite the sentence. A screen-shared document means both parties see the same text and the rewrite happens live rather than being promised as homework. Where a genuine content gap appears, the tutor teaches it there and then, briefly, and returns to the task.

The final ten minutes set and explain the between-session task. It is deliberately small: one paragraph, one method, one graph re-plotted. Small tasks come back. Large ones do not, and a task that does not come back wastes the following session. The tutor marks what returns against the same criterion strands the school uses, so the family accumulates a parallel record of criterion marks rather than waiting for a report card three months away.

Everything happens over live video, screen-sharing the student's own documents, with sessions scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the Dubai school day. There are no home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; that service runs only in India. For a Biology-strand specialist, the online model is what makes the match possible at all, because the pool is a subject pool rather than a map radius.

07

Academic honesty: what a tutor may and may not do with MYP work

  • A tutor teaches, marks, explains and coaches process; the student writes
  • No tutoring arrangement should ever supply finished coursework or a Personal Project
  • Test of safety: your child can explain every sentence in the document
  • Board materials come from the school or the board's own site, not from a tutor

The MYP is full of assessed work produced at home: investigation reports, interdisciplinary tasks, the Year 5 Personal Project. IB academic honesty rules require that work to be the student's own, and a tutor who blurs that line exposes the student rather than helping them. This is worth stating plainly, because the UAE search results for IB tutoring contain providers openly offering to supply finished coursework.

What a tutor may legitimately do is substantial. Teach the content. Explain a command term. Mark a draft against the published criterion descriptors and show where it falls short. Model a technique on a different example. Ask the questions that make a student notice their own gap. Teach referencing conventions and check that a bibliography is complete and consistent. Coach planning, time management and the reflective process behind a Personal Project. All of that is teaching, and all of it leaves the student's work theirs.

What a tutor must never do is produce or rewrite the assessed text, supply sentences to be copied into it, choose and complete the student's research for them, or edit a draft to the point where the voice is no longer the student's. The distinction a Dubai family can apply confidently is this: after the session, could your child explain every sentence in the document and why it is there. If yes, the help was teaching. If no, something has gone wrong, whoever provided it.

The same boundary applies to past papers and syllabus documents. Official IB, Cambridge and Pearson materials are copyright and should be accessed through the school or the board's own site rather than redistributed by a tutor. A good session uses the school's own tasks, the student's own data and freely available published descriptors, which is more useful anyway because it is the material the student is actually being marked on.

08

From MYP Year 5 Biology into the Diploma, and what to fix first

  • The Diploma jump is in assessment method, not mainly in biological content
  • Strong MYP criterion B and C marks predict an easier first Diploma term
  • Level choice depends on the specific university programme, checked on its own site
  • Best use of Year 5: two or three investigations written properly, start to finish

The move from MYP Year 5 Biology into Diploma Biology is not primarily a content jump. The biology broadens and deepens, but a student who has covered cells, transport, respiration, inheritance and ecology in the MYP has met most of the territory in outline. What changes is the assessment machinery: external papers with tightly defined command terms, quantitative data analysis, and a single internal assessment that must be a genuinely independent investigation rather than a teacher-set practical written up to a template.

Because of that, the students who find the first Diploma term manageable are the ones whose MYP criterion B and C marks were already strong. A student entering Year 12 with a 7 on criterion A and a 3 on criterion B has the knowledge and not the method, and the Diploma internal assessment will expose that within weeks. The reverse profile, solid method and patchy content, is the easier problem, because content can be learned on a schedule while investigative writing takes longer to build.

There is also a choice to make about level. Diploma Biology at Higher Level carries additional higher level material and a heavier load, and it is a common prerequisite for medicine and life-science degrees. Which universities require which level varies by country and by programme, and the only reliable source is the admissions page of the specific university. No tutoring arrangement should imply that a particular level guarantees an admission outcome, and no honest one will.

Practically, the useful work in MYP Year 5 is therefore not extra content coverage. It is closing criterion B and C gaps while there is still time, writing two or three investigations properly from research question to evaluation, and getting fluent with the command-term distinctions that the Diploma papers apply far more strictly. A student who arrives in Year 12 able to design, process and evaluate has bought themselves two years of easier Biology.

Areas we cover across Dubai

Lessons are delivered over live video, so a tutor is not chosen by how close they live to you. The community still matters, because it determines which schools your child's cohort comes from, which MYP science model they follow, and what time a session can realistically start.

Emirates Hills and Meadows

Feeds some of Dubai's longest-running MYP cohorts, where students have been inside criterion marking since Year 1. Problems here tend to be narrow and specific, a single criterion strand rather than a general science weakness, so diagnostic sessions are short and the work is targeted.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

A dense cluster of international schools running both MYP and British pathways. Families frequently have one child in MYP Sciences and a sibling doing IGCSE Biology, and the two need entirely different teaching: criterion descriptors on one side, past papers and mark schemes on the other.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence

High apartment density and a mobile population, which means more mid-year MYP arrivals. A student joining Year 4 Sciences in January has missed the unit that set up the investigation skills the next assessment assumes, and that gap is the usual cause of a sudden criterion B collapse.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Villa communities close to several established MYP schools, with short school runs and sessions that can start by 16:00. Biology support requested from here is often pre-emptive, booked in MYP Year 3 before the Year 4 and 5 assessment load builds rather than after a disappointing report.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills Estate

Long school-run distances inside the community, so evening sessions often start after 17:30. These cohorts include a high proportion of students who moved from British Key Stage 3 into MYP Year 3 or 4, which typically shows up as strong content recall and weak investigation writing.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

A mixed curriculum catchment with Indian, British and IB schools in close proximity. Students transferring into MYP Sciences from CBSE often have stronger biological content knowledge than their classmates and much less experience of designing their own experiments.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several university campuses and a cluster of schools, with a cohort used to screen-based learning. Online MYP Biology sessions are straightforward here; the practical constraint is usually competing extracurricular commitments rather than travel time.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

Apartment living with limited quiet study space, so session timing matters more than usual. Families here often ask for later slots, around 19:30 or 20:00, once the household has settled, and a 50-minute focused session works better than a 90-minute one.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Dubai Sports City

Fast-growing communities with newer schools and smaller MYP cohorts, which means fewer subject specialists per year group. This is where online matching helps most: a Biology-strand specialist is available even when the school's science department is small and generalist.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

MYP schools in central and coastal Dubai

Long-established IB continuum schools where students typically enter the MYP from an in-house PYP. Science is often integrated to the end of Year 5, and criterion sheets are issued task by task, so a tutor can see exactly which strand a teacher has flagged.

MYP schools across New Dubai and the southern communities

A newer group of IB schools serving the Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Al Quoz corridors. Several separate Biology from Chemistry and Physics in MYP Year 4 to prepare students for the Diploma, which changes how the criterion total is built in the final two years.

British-curriculum schools whose students cross into the MYP

Students move between these schools and MYP cohorts in both directions, usually at Year 3 or Year 4. A child arriving from Key Stage 3 brings content knowledge and no experience of criterion descriptors, which is a predictable and fixable starting point.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked work, not a description of the problem

The useful first message is two or three recently assessed Biology tasks with the criterion sheets attached, plus the school's name and your child's MYP year. That is enough to see which criterion is costing the grade. A written summary of the problem is far less diagnostic than one annotated script.

  2. 02

A short call to establish the school's model

Integrated Sciences or split strands, which year the split happens, whether the school registers for eAssessment, and when the next assessed task falls. These four answers decide the shape of the support. If you do not know them, the MYP coordinator will, and it is one email.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the real tutor

The trial is a working session, not a sales call: the tutor reads the marked work beforehand, teaches one criterion strand, and sets one small task. You see the teaching before paying for it. If the match is wrong, say so and a different tutor is proposed at no cost.

  4. 04

Agree the target criterion and the review point

Support works better with a named target: criterion C from 3 to 6 by the next assessed investigation, for example. Agree how long that should take and what evidence will show it. A vague goal of improving in Biology produces vague sessions and no way to judge them.

  5. 05

Weekly sessions with marked work in between

One session a week, one small written task between sessions, marked against the same criterion strands the school uses. The record of those marks is the progress report. It arrives weekly rather than termly, and it shows movement inside a band before the band itself changes.

  6. 06

    Review honestly, including stopping

At the agreed review point, the criterion record either shows movement or it does not. If the weakness turns out to sit in mathematics or in written English rather than in Biology, that is said plainly and the plan changes. Support that is no longer needed should end, and we will say so.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion descriptors, not a generic science syllabus

Tutors work from the MYP Sciences criteria and strands your child's school is actually marking against, which is why a session can name the specific loss point in a script. Support built on a general science syllabus cannot do that, because the marks are not awarded against a syllabus.

A Biology-strand specialist, not the nearest available tutor

Because lessons are online, the match is made from a subject pool rather than a travel radius. A student in Jumeirah Village Circle gets the same choice of MYP Sciences specialist as one in Emirates Hills, which is not true of any in-home arrangement in Dubai.

Teaching that starts from your child's own script

Every session opens with work the student produced and a teacher marked. That keeps the lesson anchored to the actual gap rather than to a tutor's preferred topic order, and it means the evidence of progress is in documents you already have.

Clear academic-honesty boundaries, stated up front

A tutor teaches, marks and coaches process. No part of an investigation report, interdisciplinary task or Personal Project is written for the student. We say this before the first session because the alternative puts a child's MYP record at risk.

Scheduling built around the Dubai school day

Sessions are set in Gulf Standard Time, typically between 16:00 and 20:30, and can move to post-Iftar slots during Ramadan. Nothing is lost to a school run or to traffic between communities, because nobody is travelling to the lesson.

A free trial before any money changes hands

The first lesson is a full working session with the tutor who would continue, at no charge and with no card details taken. Families decide after seeing the teaching rather than after reading a profile, and a wrong match costs nothing to correct.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does MYP Biology actually get marked on in Dubai schools?+

On four criteria, each scored out of eight. Criterion A is knowing and understanding, criterion B is inquiring and designing, criterion C is processing and evaluating, and criterion D is reflecting on the impacts of science. Only criterion A rewards recalling biology. The other three reward designing a fair test, handling data and evaluating a method, and writing about applications of science in a balanced way. The four marks are added to give a total out of 32, and that total is read against a published boundary table to produce the 1 to 7 grade on the report. Your school's MYP coordinator holds the full descriptors and will share them on request.

Which of the four MYP Sciences criteria costs my child the most marks?+

In the marked work Dubai families send through, criteria B and C are the usual culprits. Criterion B losses come from research questions written as topics, hypotheses with no scientific reasoning, and variables listed but not controlled. Criterion C losses come from graphs without units, conclusions that restate the data instead of explaining it, and evaluations that name human error and stop. Both are writing and method problems rather than biology problems, which is why more content revision rarely moves the grade. Two or three marked tasks laid side by side show the pattern within minutes, and that pattern decides what the next six weeks should cover.

How is a 32-mark criterion total converted into an MYP grade of 1 to 7?+

The teacher takes a best-fit mark out of eight for each criterion, adds the four, and reads the total against the MYP grade-boundary table. Broadly, 28 to 32 gives a 7, 24 to 27 a 6, 19 to 23 a 5, 15 to 18 a 4, 10 to 14 a 3 and 6 to 9 a 2. Because each grade is a band, two students on the same grade can be several marks apart, and real progress can happen without the reported number changing. That is why criterion marks are a better progress measure than report grades. Confirm the exact boundaries in use with your child's MYP coordinator, since schools may apply interim versions internally.

My child is in MYP Year 4 Biology and slipping from a 6 to a 4. What changes that?+

A two-band drop at Year 4 is usually structural, not a sudden loss of knowledge. Year 4 is where assessment expectations step up, and in many Dubai schools it is also where integrated Sciences splits into separate strands, so Biology now carries its own full criterion set. The first move is to get the criterion sheets from the tasks either side of the drop and compare them. In most cases criterion A has held steady while B or C has fallen, which points at the investigation write-up rather than the biology. One investigation redrafted properly from research question to evaluation often recovers most of the distance.

Does an MYP Biology tutor need to know my child's school unit plans?+

Knowing the unit titles helps, but the criterion sheets matter far more. MYP units are framed by key and related concepts, so the same biology can appear under titles like Balance in the Body or Systems and Survival, and no two Dubai schools sequence them identically. What a tutor genuinely needs is the current unit's statement of inquiry, the assessment task, and the marked criterion sheet from the last task. With those three documents the teaching can be aligned precisely. Without them, a tutor is guessing at both the content and the strand being assessed, which is how sessions drift into general science revision.

What is criterion B in MYP Sciences and why do Dubai students lose marks on it?+

Criterion B is inquiring and designing: explaining a problem, writing a testable hypothesis with scientific reasoning behind it, explaining how variables will be manipulated and how enough relevant data will be collected, and designing a safe, logical method. Dubai MYP cohorts include many students who arrived from systems where experiments were given rather than designed, so this is often genuinely new rather than badly done. The commonest losses are a research question with nothing measurable in it, a prediction with no reason attached, and a method that lists controlled variables without saying how they are held constant. All three are fixable in a few focused sessions.

How does MYP Biology prepare a student for IB DP Biology HL?+

Better than most families expect on content and less well than they hope on method. The MYP covers cells, transport, respiration, inheritance and ecology in outline, so the Diploma broadens territory already visited. What the Diploma adds is externally examined papers with strict command terms, quantitative data handling, and an internal assessment that must be an independent investigation rather than a write-up of a set practical. Students entering Higher Level comfortably are almost always those whose MYP criterion B and C marks were strong. A student with a 7 on criterion A and a 3 on criterion B has the knowledge without the method, and the internal assessment will find that out quickly.

Can an MYP Biology tutor help with the scientific investigation write-up?+

Yes, and it is the highest-value work available, because criteria B and C together account for around half the criterion total. The help is teaching: marking the student's own draft against the published strands, explaining each loss, modelling a technique on a different data set, and setting the rewrite. The student does every draft themselves. Under IB academic honesty rules the report must be their own work, so no tutor should write sections, supply sentences to paste in, or edit a draft until the voice has changed. The test a parent can apply is simple: your child should be able to explain every sentence in the document and why it is there.

How many sessions a week does MYP Biology support usually need?+

One 60-minute session a week suits most MYP Biology cases, with one small written task marked in between. The between-session task is what makes weekly work effective; without it, each lesson restarts rather than builds. Two sessions a week is worth considering only in a narrow case, typically a short investigation clinic before a major assessed task, or a student who has joined a Dubai MYP cohort mid-year and is covering ground the class met last term. More than two is rarely productive at this age: the limiting factor is how much redrafting a student can absorb, not how many hours a tutor is available.

Are MYP Biology on-screen examinations marked differently from school tests?+

Schools that register for MYP eAssessment put Year 5 students through externally set on-screen examinations and moderated ePortfolios, leading to the IB MYP Certificate. Those papers are marked externally against the same four criteria, which makes criterion-literate writing even more valuable, because no teacher who knows the student is interpreting a thin answer generously. Schools that do not register assess Year 5 internally. Whether your child's school registers changes the entire shape of their final MYP year, including internal deadlines that fall months before any external window, so it is the first thing to establish with the coordinator.

Does my child need Biology tutoring if the school teaches integrated MYP Sciences?+

Possibly, but the first step is to separate the strands. An integrated Sciences grade of 4 can conceal a 6 in Biology sitting beside a 2 in Physics, and tutoring the wrong strand wastes a term. Ask the teacher which strand the lowest criterion marks came from, or send the last few marked tasks for a diagnostic read. Where Biology is genuinely the weak strand, support can be targeted at it inside the integrated course. Where the problem is a shared skill, usually investigation design or data handling, the work benefits every strand at once, which is a better use of the same hour.

How do command terms change the answer expected in MYP Biology?+

Substantially, and the describe-versus-explain distinction costs more MYP Biology marks than any other single confusion. Describe asks for an account of what happens; explain asks for the mechanism and the reasons. A student describing gas exchange lists alveoli, capillaries and thin walls. A student explaining it says the thin walls shorten the diffusion pathway, the capillary network maintains a steep concentration gradient, and ventilation keeps that gradient steep. Same knowledge, several marks apart. Analyse, evaluate and discuss carry the same trap higher up the mark range, where a one-sided answer can be accurate and still capped. Teaching the term and re-answering an attempted question is one of the fastest gains available.

Will an online MYP Biology tutor in Dubai cover practical skills?+

The handling of apparatus happens in the school laboratory, and that is where it belongs. What can be taught over live video is everything the criteria actually reward: designing the investigation before it is run, choosing a measurable variable, justifying repeats and sample size, building the results table, plotting and interpreting the graph, and writing an evaluation that names specific sources of error with their direction. Those are the strands criteria B and C are marked on. Students often return to the laboratory with a better plan than they left with, which improves the data they collect as well as the report they write about it.

What does criterion D, reflecting on the impacts of science, want from an MYP student?+

Three things: an explanation of how science is applied to address a specific problem, a discussion of the implications of using science that way, and correct use of scientific language and documentation conventions. In Biology the topics are familiar, selective breeding, vaccination, gene editing, conservation, antibiotic resistance. The marks are lost on balance and citation rather than on content. A one-sided case, however well written, caps the mark because discuss requires more than one position considered. Students who are strong in Individuals and Societies usually pick these marks up quickly once someone tells them the marks exist and shows them an in-text citation.

How soon can MYP Biology sessions start for a Dubai family?+

Usually within a few days of sending the marked work, because the match is made from a subject pool rather than from whoever is nearby. The sequence is short: you send two or three assessed tasks with criterion sheets, a tutor reads them, a free trial session is scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, and weekly work begins if the match is right. The honest exception is a narrow one. If no MYP Sciences specialist with Biology as a main strand has a suitable slot, we say so and give a realistic date rather than offering a generalist and calling it a specialist match.

What should I send a tutor before the first MYP Biology session?+

Four things, and none of them takes long to gather. The last two or three marked Biology or Sciences tasks with the criterion sheets and the teacher's annotations. The current unit's statement of inquiry or assessment brief, if your child has it. The school's name and your child's MYP year. The date of the next assessed task. With those, the first session can begin with teaching rather than with questions. If you can also tell us whether the school runs integrated Sciences or separate strands, and whether it registers for eAssessment, the plan can be built properly from the start.

Start with the criterion sheets, not with more revision

If your child's MYP Biology grade has stalled, the answer is almost certainly written on a criterion sheet already in their school bag. Send two or three marked tasks and we will read them, name the strand that is costing the marks, and show you what a session would work on. The first lesson is free, delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with no card details and no commitment. If the evidence says the problem sits in mathematics or in written English rather than in Biology, we will tell you that instead of selling you Biology hours.
