IB MYP Physics Home Tutor in Dubai

An IB MYP physics home tutor in Dubai is usually hired after a motion-graph test goes badly, and the test is rarely the real problem. Nearly every MYP physics topic has a mathematical prerequisite sitting underneath it, and when that is missing the physics looks broken. This page maps each topic to the operation it depends on, names the symptom, and says what one session can fix. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video; IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE.

  • Every MYP physics topic mapped to the mathematics it depends on
  • Session work on the student's own graphs, circuits and calculations
  • Drive-time arithmetic published, so the in-home premium is visible
  • One-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, no travel either way

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Most MYP physics problems are arithmetic problems in a physics costume

A parent in Dubai hires a physics tutor because a test came back at 11 out of 25 and the topic was motion. The reasonable assumption is that the student does not understand motion. In practice, perhaps one error in five on that script is about motion. The others are a gradient read as a single coordinate pair divided, a speed in metres per second calculated from a distance left in centimetres, an equation rearranged by pattern rather than by operation, and an answer written with no unit at all. The physics was understood. The arithmetic underneath it was not.

This matters because it changes what you should buy. Four operations carry most of MYP physics: rearranging an equation, converting units before substituting, reading a gradient as a change over a change, and handling standard form. A student fluent in those four can be taught any MYP physics topic in a few sessions. A student who is not will present as weak in every topic in turn, and will be tutored topic by topic for a year while the obstacle goes untouched. The mapping in this page exists so a parent can check which of the two is happening.

The home-tutor question deserves a direct answer as well, because it is the phrase that brings most families here. In-home physics tuition exists in Dubai and the published rates for it run from roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, with the travel inside the fee; advertised monthly packages run around AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour visits against about AED 799 for eight online sessions. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE. In-home teaching is a service we run in India only, and everything for UAE families is one-to-one over live video.

The reason we are comfortable saying that on a page targeting this search is that the in-home arithmetic in this city does not favour the parent. A tutor crossing from Al Qusais to Arabian Ranches for a 5pm appointment is in traffic for ninety minutes on the outbound leg, which is why they will not take a one-hour booking and why the rate carries the drive. The practical effect is a shortlist of tutors defined by geography. A family in The Springs ends up choosing between whoever can reach The Springs, rather than between people who have marked MYP physics criterion tasks.

What follows is the physics. A table mapping each MYP topic to the operation beneath it. The three questions a student must be able to answer about any motion graph. Why the resistance investigation goes wrong in the same way in every MYP 4 cohort. The calculation order that costs marks in efficiency questions. What the explain command term wants in a waves answer. How to design a physics investigation that can be marked in the upper bands. And what to fix in the final two MYP 5 terms before DP Physics or A Level.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics is taught under three different labels across a Dubai school career, and the mathematical demand rises faster than the physics does. Here is what each stage expects numerically, which is the part families are rarely warned about.

MYPAges 11-14 · MYP 1-3

Physics inside integrated sciences

Forces, energy, light, sound and simple circuits, with the numbers kept small and the units usually consistent. The mathematical demand is low, which is exactly why gaps hide here: a student can reach the end of MYP 3 having never rearranged an equation, because every question gave the unknown on the left.

Dubai cohorts arrive in MYP 1 from the PYP and from British, Indian and American primaries, with mathematics backgrounds that differ far more than their science backgrounds. We check ratio, decimal place value and simple rearrangement in the first session, because those three predict MYP 4 physics better than any science test at this age.

MYPAges 14-16 · MYP 4-5

MYP Physics as a separate subject

Motion and graphs, forces and Newton's laws, work, energy and efficiency, waves, and electricity including series and parallel circuits. Unknowns now appear in denominators, units are mixed deliberately, and graphs must be processed rather than described. This is where the four operations stop being optional.

Most Dubai continuum schools split the sciences at the start of MYP 4, so physics arrives with its own teacher, rubric and deadline in the same fortnight as chemistry and biology do. Families who ask for the physics task sheet in the first half term usually find the arithmetic problem before the first report does.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Physics

Standard or Higher Level, with uncertainties propagated, relationships linearised, and an internal assessment the student designs from their own research question. Logarithmic plotting and significant-figure discipline are assessed explicitly, so a student who reached MYP 5 without secure standard form meets two problems at once.

The DP Physics decision in Dubai is often made on timetable availability rather than on evidence. The useful evidence is the MYP criterion C record: independent data processing is the first thing the internal assessment demands, and it is visible in marked MYP work two years earlier than any mock paper.

A LevelAges 14-18 · Years 10-13

A Level and Cambridge IGCSE Physics

Many Dubai students leave MYP at 16 for IGCSE Physics, such as Cambridge 0625, and then A Level. The content overlaps substantially with MYP physics; the assessment does not, because terminal examinations test design and evaluation indirectly while MYP marks them directly against criteria.

British-curriculum schools hold 37 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment, so transfers in both directions are routine here. Cambridge runs June and November series with every centre allocated to one of six administrative zones, and the zone timetable governs your child's dates, so a move in Year 10 needs the receiving school's exams officer involved early.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below is MYP physics written as topics with their mathematical prerequisite attached, because that is the pairing that determines whether a topic lands. Take any line to your child's marked script and check whether the symptom described is the one on the page.

Speed, distance and time

MYP 3-5

Needs unit conversion and division fluency before anything else. The symptom when it is missing is an answer of the right magnitude in the wrong unit, or a speed calculated from centimetres and seconds and reported in metres per second without conversion.

Distance-time and velocity-time graphs

MYP 4-5

Needs gradient as a rate of change, and area under a line for velocity-time work. The symptom is a student dividing one coordinate pair, which is only correct through the origin, and treating a horizontal line on a velocity-time graph as stationary.

Forces, resultants and free-body diagrams

MYP 4-5

Needs vector addition in one dimension and the discipline of stating direction. The symptom is a diagram with equal-length arrows for unequal forces, or a resultant given as a number with no direction, which loses the mark even when the arithmetic is right.

Newton's laws and acceleration

MYP 4-5

Needs rearrangement with the unknown in any position. The symptom is a student who can state the relationship between force, mass and acceleration and then divides the wrong way when mass is the unknown, which is a rearrangement failure rather than a physics one.

Work, energy and efficiency

MYP 4-5

Needs percentage calculation and a fixed order of operations. The symptom is useful and total energy inverted in the efficiency fraction, or a percentage above 100 accepted without comment, which shows the student is not checking the physical sense of an answer.

Waves, sound and the wave equation

MYP 3-5

Needs standard form and consistent prefixes, since wavelengths arrive in nanometres and frequencies in kilohertz. The symptom is an answer out by a factor of a thousand, accepted because the student has no sense of the expected magnitude.

Light, reflection and refraction

MYP 3-5

Needs ray-diagram geometry and the explain command term. The symptom is refraction described as light bending, which is the observation rather than the mechanism; the mark requires the change of speed between media to be stated.

Electricity, current and resistance

MYP 4-5

Needs rearrangement with the unknown in the denominator and careful scale reading. The symptom is a correctly stated relationship between potential difference, current and resistance followed by the wrong division, plus ammeter readings taken off the wrong interval.

Series and parallel circuits

MYP 4-5

Needs reciprocal arithmetic for parallel combinations and the habit of tracking what stays constant. The symptom is a student who knows current divides in parallel and cannot predict what happens to the ammeter reading when a second resistor is added.

Measurement, resolution and significant figures

MYP 5

Needs place value and an understanding of instrument limits. It carries few MYP marks directly and predicts DP Physics difficulty strongly, so it belongs in the final MYP 5 terms whether or not the current rubric rewards it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families use physics support, chosen by what the marked work shows rather than by preference. All are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Operations block, six to eight sessions

A short run aimed squarely at the four operations: rearrangement, unit conversion, gradient as a rate, and standard form. Each session drills one operation inside a physics context so it is never abstract, and the student keeps a one-page reference sheet they wrote themselves.

  • One operation per session, drilled inside real physics questions
  • Mixed-unit calculation sets between sessions
  • A student-written reference sheet rather than a handout
  • Ends when accuracy holds under timed conditions

Topic support through the term

A weekly slot following the school's own physics sequence, so the session is always on the unit being taught now. Best for students whose operations are secure and who need the physics itself unpacked, particularly electricity and waves where the mechanisms are genuinely difficult.

  • Follows the school's unit order, not a generic scheme
  • Simulators used for circuits and motion
  • A marked piece every second session
  • Reschedules until the previous evening

Investigation support, two to four sessions

Help across a current physics investigation, from the task sheet to the student's final draft. The plan is interrogated for mechanism and control, the data is processed live, and the draft is reviewed against the rubric. The student writes every word that is submitted.

  • Begins with the school's task sheet and rubric
  • Variable control tested by following the method literally
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only
  • Not offered as a group class, since the data is one student's

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IB MYP physics home tutor in Dubai costs, and what the travel buys

  • Bestimate 2026 in-home band for Dubai: AED 180-350; home tutor listings to AED 500
  • Online qualified band: roughly AED 150-300 an hour, no travel in the fee
  • Advertised packages: about AED 799 online for eight sessions, AED 1,599-1,799 in-home for four
  • Two-hour minimums exist because of the drive, not because of the physics

Published in-home rates in Dubai run from roughly AED 180 to AED 350 an hour on Bestimate's 2026 table, with independent home tutors advertised up to AED 500, while online bands for a qualified subject tutor sit closer to AED 150 to AED 300. Monthly packages in this market show the same gap plainly: about AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. The difference is not teaching quality. It is a car, an evening and a city with a rush hour that lasts three hours.

That is also why visiting tutors rarely accept a single-hour booking in the outer communities. A two-hour minimum is the only way the economics work for them, which means a family needing forty-five focused minutes on gradient reading pays for two hours and watches a tired student in hour two. The table below sets out the arithmetic community by community, using the drive times families themselves report for a weekday evening appointment.

IB Gram does not provide home visits in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For UAE families, teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. The honest case for it is not that it is a cheaper version of the same thing. It is that the travel premium buys nothing a physics student needs, while removing it buys two things they do need: a tutor selected for having marked MYP physics work, and a session short enough to be fully attended.

Every MYP physics topic has a mathematical prerequisite: here is the map

The useful diagnostic question in MYP physics is not which topic is weak. It is which operation is missing, because one missing operation makes several topics look weak at once. A student who cannot rearrange with the unknown in a denominator will fail at acceleration, at resistance and at density, and a topic-by-topic plan will treat those as three problems. They are one problem presenting three times, and it is cheaper and faster to fix at the source.

The table maps the topics most Dubai MYP 4 and 5 students are taught against the operation each one sits on, the symptom when the operation is missing, and what a session does about it. Read it with your child's last marked script beside you. If the errors cluster in one column, you have found the plan. If they are scattered across the mechanism row, the problem genuinely is physics and the sessions should be topic teaching instead.

What makes this worth publishing is that it is the cheapest possible intervention, and almost nobody sells it. Six to eight sessions on four operations, drilled inside physics questions rather than as abstract mathematics, usually resolves the majority of a script's errors. The sessions are not glamorous: they are mixed-unit calculations, rearrange-before-substituting discipline, and gradients read off axes with two widely spaced points marked in pencil. They are, however, the work that makes every subsequent physics topic teachable, and they are the reason a student can look transformed in a single half term without anyone having taught them new physics at all.

03

Motion graphs: three questions a student must be able to answer about any graph

  • Read the vertical axis aloud, in words and units, before interpreting
  • Say what the gradient physically represents on this graph
  • Say what a flat line means on this graph specifically
  • Mark two widely spaced points on the line, never two data points

Motion graphs produce more lost marks in MYP 4 than any other physics topic, and the reason is that two different graphs look alike. A distance-time graph and a velocity-time graph can have identical shapes and mean opposite things, and a student who has not internalised which axis they are reading will describe a horizontal line as stopped on both. That single confusion costs marks every time graphs appear, which in MYP physics is constantly.

The three questions we drill are deliberately mechanical. First: what is on the vertical axis, in words and units, read aloud. Second: what does the gradient of this particular graph physically represent, speed on a distance-time graph and acceleration on a velocity-time graph. Third: what does a flat line mean on this graph specifically. A student who answers those three before interpreting anything stops making the error, and it takes two sessions rather than a term.

Then the gradient itself. Reading it correctly means marking two points far apart on the line, not two data points, reading the change in the vertical quantity and the change in the horizontal quantity off the axes, and dividing one by the other with units carried through. Students taught gradient as rise over run in a mathematics lesson often do not transfer it, because in physics the axes have units and the answer has a physical name. We teach it in the physics context, using the student's own graph from their last investigation, and the transfer stops being an issue.

04

Why the MYP 4 resistance investigation goes wrong in the same way every year

  • Name thickness and material as controlled variables, and say how
  • Switch off between readings and say why, or address heating in the evaluation
  • Calculate resistance before plotting; raw readings are unprocessed data
  • Identify anomalies on the graph rather than quietly smoothing them

Nearly every MYP 4 cohort in Dubai runs an investigation into the resistance of a wire, and nearly every cohort loses the same marks. The practical is straightforward and the design is not. The student varies the length of the wire, measures potential difference and current, calculates resistance and plots it against length. Criterion C then goes reasonably well and criterion B falls apart, because the plan said nothing about the wire's thickness or material.

The control-variable omission is the central failure. A student who varies length while silently using the same reel of wire has in fact controlled thickness and material, but the plan does not say so, and criterion B marks the plan. The second failure is heating: current through a thin wire raises its temperature and therefore its resistance, so readings taken with the circuit left closed drift upward. A plan that does not mention switching off between readings has a validity problem the evaluation ought to name.

The third is the processing step. Plotting raw potential difference against length instead of calculating resistance first is unprocessed data, which costs criterion C marks regardless of how neat the graph is. In a session we work through all three on the student's own plan: the thickness and material controls written explicitly with the method of control, the switching-off procedure added with the reason, and the resistance column calculated before anything is plotted. The same three corrections then transfer to the next investigation, which is why this work is worth more than its topic suggests.

05

Energy and efficiency: the order of operations that costs the marks

  • Label useful and total energy explicitly before calculating anything
  • Convert to a common unit before dividing
  • Multiply by a hundred once, then check the result is below a hundred
  • Work questions use distance in the direction of the force, not total distance

Efficiency questions look easy and are marked harshly, because there are three places to go wrong and only one of them involves understanding energy. The first is inverting the fraction, putting total energy over useful energy, which produces a figure above 100 per cent that the student then writes down without noticing. The second is mixing units, usually joules with kilojoules. The third is forgetting to multiply by a hundred, or multiplying twice.

The fix is procedural and it holds. Write the quantities with units, identify useful and total explicitly and label them, convert both to the same unit, divide useful by total, then multiply by a hundred, then check the answer is below a hundred and makes physical sense. Written as six steps on a card the student produces themselves, it becomes automatic in two or three weeks of short drills. The sense-check at the end is the step that matters most, because it catches every one of the three errors.

Work and energy transfer questions fail differently, usually on the distance in the direction of the force rather than the total distance moved, and on confusing the energy transferred with the force applied. These are conceptual and need teaching rather than drilling. Separating the two kinds of error is exactly what an error tally does: if efficiency questions are wrong and work questions are right, nothing conceptual is missing and the fix is the six-step card. If both are wrong, the session teaches energy transfer properly before any procedure is introduced.

06

Waves and light: what the explain command term actually wants

  • Explain wants a mechanism; describe wants the observation
  • Keep a short list of the mechanisms the topic expects
  • Convert prefixes before substituting into the wave equation
  • Estimate the order of magnitude before calculating

Waves is the MYP physics topic where command terms do the most damage, because the observations are easy to describe and the mechanisms are not. A student asked to explain refraction writes that the light bends as it enters the glass. That is a description of what is seen, it is correct, and it earns nothing against an explain command term, which requires a reason or mechanism. The mark wants the change in speed between media, and the resulting change in direction as a consequence of it.

The same pattern repeats across the topic. Why does sound travel faster in water than in air, why does a wave diffract through a narrow gap, why does a red object look red: each has a describable observation and an underlying mechanism, and the command term decides which one is wanted. Students who learn to annotate the command term before writing, and who keep a short list of the mechanisms the syllabus expects, stop losing these marks almost immediately.

The wave equation adds a numerical trap on top. Wavelengths arrive in nanometres or centimetres, frequencies in kilohertz or megahertz, and speeds in metres per second, so an answer out by a factor of a thousand is the most common wrong answer in the topic. We teach a magnitude estimate before calculating: what order of size should this answer be. A student who expects a number near three hundred million for the speed of light in a vacuum notices immediately when their calculator produces three hundred thousand, and that habit is worth more than any formula sheet.

07

Designing a physics investigation that can be marked in the upper bands

  • Name every plausible confound, not just the obvious variable
  • Say how each control is maintained, and with what
  • Time ten oscillations and divide, with the reaction-time reason stated
  • The student writes every word submitted; the tutor questions and feeds back

Criterion B asks for a problem explained, a hypothesis supported by scientific reasoning, variables identified with their handling described, and a safe, replicable method. In physics the giveaway between a middle-band and an upper-band plan is almost always the variable section, because physics investigations have more plausible confounds than biology ones and students mention none of them.

Take a pendulum investigation, which many MYP 4 cohorts run alongside the resistance practical. The student varies length and measures period. The upper-band plan names the mass of the bob and the amplitude of swing as controlled variables, says how each is held constant, and explains why amplitude matters at large angles. It also specifies timing ten oscillations and dividing, because a single period is comparable to human reaction time. That last sentence is a validity argument, and it is the kind of detail the upper bands describe.

A session on this does not involve teaching pendulums. It involves taking the student's own plan, following the method literally while asking what happens next, and stopping at every point where a reader would have to guess. Then each guess becomes a sentence. The student writes all of them; a tutor questions, challenges and gives written feedback, and never supplies text for submission. That boundary matters in the MYP as much as in the Diploma, and a tutor who blurs it is exposing the student to an academic-honesty finding that outlasts any grade. The useful side effect of working this way is that the student learns to read their own plan as a stranger would, which is the skill the Diploma Programme internal assessment will ask for in two years' time.

08

From MYP 5 physics to DP Physics or A Level: what to fix in the final two terms

At the end of MYP 5, Dubai families choose between Diploma Programme Physics at Standard or Higher Level and A Level Physics, and the decision is too often made on which school has a place. The better evidence is the criterion record. Strong criterion A with weak criterion C means secure recall and shaky independent data handling, and that profile finds the first DP year hardest, because the internal assessment arrives before the content is finished being taught.

The table compares the two routes on the things that actually differ for a student who found MYP physics hard: how much independent design is required, when it is required, how uncertainty is treated, and how much of the grade rests on a single terminal sitting. Neither route is easier in general. They are differently shaped, and the shape interacts with the student's own profile.

Whichever route is chosen, four things are worth fixing in the last two MYP 5 terms, and all four are cheap compared with remediation later. Significant figures and instrument resolution, because both routes assess them explicitly. Writing a research question answerable with school apparatus, which is the most common internal assessment failure. Processing data without being told which calculation to apply. And linearising a simple relationship, which is a mathematics skill that arrives in DP Physics early and unannounced. Twelve sessions across two terms covers all four and removes most of the first-year shock. Doing them in MYP 5, while the stakes are low and the timetable still has room, costs a fraction of remediating the same gaps in the middle of a Diploma year when five other subjects are competing for the same evenings.

Dubai communities and the drive-time arithmetic behind the in-home premium

These notes describe why in-home physics tuition is priced the way it is in each part of the city, and what an online slot looks like instead. Delivery here is online in every case, so the only thing your address changes is the hour that works.

Dubai Marina, JBR and JLT

A visiting tutor loses the tower lift queue at both ends of a 5pm appointment, which is why marina bookings are quoted as two-hour visits. Online, a focused forty-five minutes after dinner achieves more than a tired ninety.

Arabian Ranches, The Springs and The Meadows

The highest in-home premiums in the city, because the outbound drive at five and the return at seven consume an evening for one paid hour. Removing the travel is also what widens the tutor shortlist from local to specialist.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

Students travel a long way to IB campuses on the other side of the city and arrive tired. We put graph work and marked-script review in the weekday slot and keep new rearrangement teaching for a weekend morning.

Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim and Al Sufouh

Closest to several continuum campuses, so a physics task sheet can be worked on the day it is issued. A 4.30pm slot is realistic here, which matters for topics that need a clear head.

Dubai Hills Estate, Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

Villas with study rooms and strong connections, so circuit simulators and live spreadsheets run smoothly. This is where most of our screen-shared graph and gradient work happens without technical friction.

Business Bay, DIFC and Downtown Dubai

Apartment households with parents working late, where the session note matters more than the session timing. We write it the same evening naming the operation drilled and the next check.

Dubai South, The Sustainable City and Dubailand

Newer communities a long way from the older school clusters, where a visiting tutor is both expensive and scarce. Online removes the distance entirely and the slot can start as soon as the bus arrives.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked physics script and a graph

A photograph of the last marked physics test and one graph the student drew themselves tells us which column of the topic map the errors sit in. If the school publishes strand marks, include them. We read both before the first session and open with the operation we think is missing, which you can then judge for yourself.

  2. 02

    Free trial lesson, condition stated

One forty-five-minute online session at no charge, with no card details taken and nothing to cancel. The tutor works on the script you sent and finishes by naming which of the four operations is weak and what a six to eight session block would address. The written note is yours whether you continue or not.

  3. 03

Fix the operations before the topics

Where the errors cluster on rearrangement, conversion, gradient or standard form, we drill those inside physics questions rather than teaching topics in sequence. The student writes their own one-page reference sheet. Most scripts improve across several topics at once, because one operation was making several topics look broken.

  4. 04

Then follow the school's physics sequence

Once the operations hold under timed conditions, the weekly slot follows whatever unit the school is teaching, with simulators for circuits and motion and a marked piece every second session. Send the task sheet whenever an investigation is set, so sessions can be scheduled backwards from the school's internal deadline.

  5. 05

Review at half term and plan the interruptions

At half term we compare the error tally with the baseline and decide whether to continue, change focus or reduce to fortnightly. School examination weeks are pause weeks. During Ramadan, sessions move to post-Iftar or a late weekend morning and shorten to forty-five minutes. Planning that in advance is what keeps a term's plan intact.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The arithmetic is diagnosed before the physics is taught

Four operations carry most MYP physics marks, and a script dominated by rearrangement and conversion errors does not need a year of topic teaching. We count the error types first and will say when the useful purchase is a short operations block rather than a term of weekly physics.

The in-home premium is published, not hidden

Dubai in-home bands run roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel inside the fee, against roughly AED 150 to AED 300 online for a qualified subject tutor. We publish both with their sources and let the comparison stand. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service runs in India only.

Work on the student's own graphs and circuits

Sessions run on the graph the student drew and the resistance plan they submitted, not on a worksheet. A shared screen holds the rubric, the marked script and a live spreadsheet together, which is where gradient and processing corrections actually get made rather than merely explained.

Honest about the laboratory

Practical work belongs at school with school apparatus and supervision, and no tutor replaces it. What a tutor contributes is the design beforehand and the processing afterwards, which is where criteria B and C are marked. Anyone offering to run your child's MYP practicals has misread the programme.

No accreditation claimed, no grades promised

IB Gram holds no approval from KHDA, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and claims none. We publish no IB examination dates, because the IB's own site cannot be verified automatically. And no tutor can promise a grade on a programme whose boundaries the school itself applies.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Will a physics tutor come to our villa in Dubai?+

Not from IB Gram. We do not provide in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home teaching is a service we run only in India. For Dubai families everything is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Visiting tutors do exist in this market at published rates of roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with the travel inside the fee, and they usually require a two-hour minimum in the outer communities because of the drive. The practical cost of that model is a shortlist defined by geography rather than by who has marked MYP physics work.

Why does my child understand physics in class and still fail the calculations?+

Because classwork is scaffolded in ways that hide arithmetic. On the board the equation is already rearranged and the units are already consistent. In a test the student must rearrange before substituting and convert first, and those two operations are where most errors live. The test for this takes ten minutes: give six mixed-unit calculations with the unknown in the denominator, untimed. If accuracy collapses, the obstacle is one of four operations rather than the physics, and that is a six to eight session fix.

What are the four operations MYP physics depends on?+

Rearranging an equation with the unknown in any position, including a denominator. Converting units before substituting rather than afterwards. Reading a gradient as a change in the vertical quantity divided by a change in the horizontal one, both read off the axes. And handling standard form with prefixes, since wavelengths arrive in nanometres and frequencies in kilohertz. A student fluent in those four can be taught any MYP physics topic quickly. A student missing one will look weak in several topics at once, which is why topic-by-topic tutoring so often disappoints.

How do I know whether my child is reading motion graphs properly?+

Ask three questions about any graph in their book. What is on the vertical axis, in words and units. What does the gradient of this particular graph physically represent. What does a flat line mean on this graph specifically. A student who cannot answer the third will describe a horizontal line on a velocity-time graph as stopped, which is wrong and costs marks whenever graphs appear. All three are drillable in about two sessions, using the student's own graphs rather than textbook examples.

Why did my child lose criterion B marks on the resistance of a wire investigation?+

Almost always the controlled variables. A student who varies length while using one reel of wire has controlled thickness and material in practice but said nothing about it in the plan, and criterion B marks the plan. The second common loss is heating: current warms a thin wire and raises its resistance, so a plan that does not mention switching off between readings has a validity gap. The third is plotting raw potential difference against length instead of calculating resistance first, which costs criterion C marks for unprocessed data.

What makes an efficiency calculation go wrong so often?+

Three things, and only one involves understanding energy. Inverting the fraction, so total goes over useful and the answer exceeds 100 per cent without the student noticing. Mixing joules with kilojoules. And multiplying by a hundred either twice or not at all. A six-step procedure written by the student fixes all three: label useful and total, convert to one unit, divide useful by total, multiply by a hundred once, then check the answer is below a hundred and physically sensible. Two or three weeks of short drills makes it automatic.

My child writes that light bends during refraction and gets no marks. Why?+

Because bending is the observation and explain asks for the mechanism. The mark wants the change in the speed of light between the two media, with the change in direction following from it. This is a command-term problem rather than a physics one, and it recurs across the whole waves topic: why sound travels faster in water, why a wave diffracts, why a red object looks red. Each has an easy description and a required mechanism. Annotating the command term before writing resolves most of these within a few weeks.

Can physics really be taught well without apparatus in the room?+

The apparatus part is not the tutored part. MYP practical work happens at school, supervised, with school equipment, and nothing replaces that. Tutoring covers the design beforehand and the processing afterwards, which is precisely where criteria B and C are marked. A shared screen holds the task sheet, the rubric and a live spreadsheet at once, and a circuit simulator lets a student predict an ammeter reading before changing a resistor, which demonstrates variable control better than most table-top demonstrations manage.

Is it cheaper to hire a physics tutor who lives in our community?+

Sometimes marginally, and it usually costs more in other ways. Published Dubai in-home bands sit above online bands precisely because travel is inside the fee, and in the outer communities a visiting tutor typically requires two hours for the economics to work. A family needing forty-five focused minutes on gradient reading pays for two hours and watches a tired student in hour two. The larger cost is the shortlist: proximity becomes the selection criterion instead of whether the tutor has marked MYP physics criterion tasks.

How many sessions does a MYP 4 physics student usually need?+

If the error tally is dominated by operations, six to eight sessions is often the whole intervention, after which a fortnightly check is enough. If the tally shows genuine mechanism errors in electricity or waves, add a weekly slot through the term the school teaches those units. What rarely works in Dubai is three weekly sessions across biology, chemistry and physics at once: the week does not contain them, and the plan is usually abandoned by half term and paid for in full.

Should we choose DP Physics or A Level Physics after MYP 5?+

Read the criterion record rather than the overall grade. DP Physics requires an internal assessment designed by the student from their own research question, often before the content is finished, so a student strong on recall and weak on independent data processing meets the hardest part first. A Level concentrates more weight in terminal papers and generally places the independent work later. Neither is easier in general. Ask the MYP coordinator for the strand marks and decide from the shape of them.

What should we fix in MYP 5 before physics gets harder?+

Four things, roughly twelve sessions across two terms. Significant figures and instrument resolution, because both post-16 routes assess them explicitly. Writing a research question that can actually be answered with school apparatus, which is the most common internal assessment failure. Processing data without being told which calculation to use. And linearising a simple relationship, which arrives early in DP Physics and is a mathematics skill rather than a physics one. Doing these in MYP 5 is far cheaper than remediating them in the first post-16 term.

Do physics tutors in Dubai need a government permit?+

Yes. Private tuition in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat specific figures with caution. Since the permit is free, there is no reason not to ask to see it.

Can the tutor help write up my child's physics investigation?+

A tutor questions the plan, challenges the variable list, follows the method literally to find the gaps, processes the data alongside the student and gives written feedback on a draft. What a tutor must never do is supply any part of the text that is submitted. Every word of an MYP investigation has to be the student's own. That boundary is not a formality: outsourced work is an academic-honesty breach whose consequences for the student last far longer than a low criterion mark would.

Send a marked script and one graph

The quickest way to find out what MYP physics help your child actually needs is to look at a marked script and one graph they drew themselves. If the errors cluster on units, rearrangement, gradients and standard form, the useful purchase is a short operations block and not a year of topic teaching. If they cluster on mechanisms in electricity or waves, the physics itself needs teaching and the weekly slot is worth it. Send both, take the free trial lesson, and read the note that follows. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with in-home visits offered only in India.
