IB Chemistry Tutor in Town Square

Parents looking for an IB chemistry tutor in Town Square usually describe one subject going wrong. Chemistry is really three layers stacked on each other — calculation, explanation and mechanism — and a student can be solid in one and absent in another while the report says only that effort is needed. IB Gram diagnoses which layer, then teaches it one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Town Square

Chemistry is three subjects, and only one of them is usually broken

Is there anybody near Town Square who actually knows this syllabus? That is the question behind the search, and the more useful version is sharper: does the tutor know which part of chemistry your child is missing? Because IB chemistry is not one skill. It is three layers stacked on each other, and a student can be entirely secure in one and absent in another while the school report says nothing more specific than that more effort is needed.

The bottom layer is quantitative. Moles, stoichiometry, concentration, limiting reagent, percentage yield, gas volumes. Every topic in the course uses it, which is why a weakness here presents as a weakness in everything and gets misdiagnosed as a general problem with chemistry. A student who can balance an equation but cannot carry a multi-step conversion through unit changes under time pressure will look weak in energetics, in equilibrium and in acids and bases simultaneously.

The middle layer is explanation. Chemistry punishes imprecision harder than any other Diploma science, and the marks go to answers that name the specific factor and finish the reasoning. Asked why one compound boils higher than another, an answer gesturing at intermolecular forces scores partial credit at best; an answer naming the force, comparing its strength and connecting that to the energy needed to separate molecules gets the marks. The difference is a habit, not knowledge.

The top layer is mechanism, and it is where most students announce that chemistry has become impossible. Organic chemistry taught as a catalogue of reagents and products survives until a question presents an unfamiliar molecule, at which point a perfect catalogue provides nothing. What the marks reward is reasoning about where a molecule is electron-poor and why a nucleophile goes there.

The practical realities out here shape delivery. Town Square is a Nshama community off Al Qudra Road, and Diploma chemistry students travel out — Motor City, Dubai Sports City, or further into Al Barsha and Silicon Oasis — so a half three finish becomes a 4:45pm arrival home. IB Gram delivers one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time and makes no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run in India only.

And supply is genuinely thin. The IB is roughly 7% of Dubai's 387,441 private-school pupils across 227 schools, spread citywide, with only the final two years sitting the Diploma. Chemistry at Higher Level is a narrow specialism inside that, and the probability that a qualified HL chemistry teacher lives near Town Square with a free weekday evening is low. Online matching is how that constraint disappears.

One practical note on sequence. Where two layers are weak at once, the bottom one gets fixed first regardless of which the student finds more alarming, because mechanism questions frequently carry a quantitative part and an explanation answer frequently rests on a calculated value. Working top down feels responsive and produces a term in which nothing quite consolidates. Working bottom up feels slower for a fortnight and then everything above it becomes cheaper to teach.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Each stage of the chemistry route needs a different layer attended to. These are the stages we cover for Town Square families.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Sciences, the chemistry strand

Four criteria on a 0-8 scale: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Criterion B asks for an investigation designed with controlled variables; criterion C asks for data processed and the method evaluated, which is where Diploma practical skill begins.

A Town Square parent reading a strong criterion A with a weak criterion C is looking at the experimental strand specifically rather than a general science concern. Fixing it in Years 9 and 10 is the cheapest preparation for Diploma chemistry available, and it predicts how a student will handle the investigation two years later.

DP SLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Chemistry Standard Level

Written papers plus the investigation at 20% of the grade. Breadth rather than depth, so coverage is the risk: a topic taught in a hurried fortnight can stay unlearned until a mock exposes it. Precise use of chemical language is examined constantly, and a nearly-right definition scores nothing.

SL chemistry is a common Town Square choice for students heading towards life sciences, nutrition or business, often paired with Biology. The pairing is sensible, but the two reward different habits — biology rewards recall structured by command term, chemistry rewards finished explanation — and students sometimes import the biology habit into a chemistry paper.

DP HLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Chemistry Higher Level

Additional depth plus an extra written paper, with the investigation still at 20%. HL organic chemistry extends into reaction pathways and stereochemistry, and HL energetics into entropy and spontaneity. The level rewards building an argument across several steps and penalises formula lookup.

The level most medicine, dentistry and pharmacy applications require, and the level where local availability around Town Square most often reaches zero. Families here frequently need precisely the specialist the neighbourhood cannot supply, which is the whole case for matching online rather than by distance.

BridgeAges 15-16 · Year 11 into Year 12

IGCSE or MYP into Diploma chemistry

The step that catches strong students. IGCSE chemistry rewards recall and single-step calculation; Diploma chemistry expects mechanism-level explanation and multi-step quantitative work. A high IGCSE grade is no protection, and the slip usually shows by November of Year 12.

The intervention that works is a block on the quantitative layer — moles, concentration, multi-step conversion — plus an introduction to reasoning about electron density, taken in the summer or early Year 12. The summer is also the only period when a Town Square week has spare hours in it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The chemistry topics and components Town Square students need work on, grouped by which of the three layers each one actually tests.

Moles, stoichiometry and concentration

HL and SL

The bottom layer, and the first thing a diagnostic should test whatever the student names. Multi-step conversions between mass, moles, volume and concentration, limiting reagent, percentage yield and gas calculations under time pressure rather than at leisure.

Atomic structure and periodicity

HL and SL

The explanation layer at its most testable. Students state a trend in ionisation energy and lose every explanation mark because the answer labels the trend rather than naming shielding, nuclear charge and atomic radius as the reason behind it.

Bonding and structure

HL and SL

Intermolecular forces, molecular geometry and the link between structure and physical property. Explaining a boiling point difference properly means naming the specific force, comparing its strength and completing the reasoning; partial answers lose most of the credit.

Energetics and thermodynamics

HL and SL

Enthalpy cycles, bond enthalpies and at HL entropy and Gibbs free energy. The chemistry is usually understood and the sign conventions are not, which produces answers that are internally consistent and wrong. A bookkeeping fix rather than a content one.

Equilibrium and kinetics

HL and SL

Le Chatelier reasoning, equilibrium constants, rate equations and at HL determining orders from data. Students state what shifts rather than explaining why, and the HL rate-determination questions expose data-handling confidence directly.

Acids, bases and redox

HL and SL

pH and pKa calculations, buffers, titration curves and electrochemical cells. Titration-curve interpretation and buffer reasoning are reliably examined and reliably weak, and both improve quickly with worked practice against the mark scheme.

Organic chemistry: mechanisms

HL and SL

The top layer. Nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and at HL longer pathways and stereochemistry. Marks are in explaining why a species attacks where it does using electron density and partial charge, not in reciting reagent-product pairs.

Organic chemistry at Higher Level: pathways

Higher Level

Planning a route to a target molecule and justifying each step. Students who treat every reaction as a separate fact cannot plan a route, and the fix is working backwards from the product, which is a technique almost nobody is taught explicitly.

Data analysis and uncertainty in chemistry

HL and SL

Percentage uncertainty in titrations and mass measurements, significant figures justified by the apparatus, and whether a result supports a conclusion. Examined in the papers and decisive in the investigation's processing and evaluation marks.

The Chemistry investigation

HL and SL, 20% of the grade

An individual investigation against published criteria, lost most often at design: no measurable variable, insufficient repeats, a range too narrow to show a trend, or apparatus whose uncertainty swamps the effect being measured.

Chemical language and command terms

HL and SL

State, outline, explain, deduce, discuss and evaluate each want a different shape of answer. A knowledgeable student answering the wrong command term is a routine, entirely fixable loss, and probably the cheapest marks on the page to recover.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three chemistry arrangements for Town Square families, all online over live video. Which one fits depends entirely on which of the three layers the diagnostic finds missing.

Quantitative foundations block

A short, specific run on the bottom layer: moles, concentration, multi-step conversions, limiting reagent, percentage yield and the uncertainty treatment that goes with them. Most students who name organic chemistry as the problem need some of this too, and six to ten sessions usually settles it.

  • Diagnostic on real multi-step calculation questions first
  • Six to ten sessions with a written topic list as the scope
  • Best taken in the summer before Year 12 or early in Year 12
  • Transfers directly into the investigation's processing marks

Weekly course support

A fixed slot with one chemistry specialist following the school's own scheme of work, closing gaps in the week they appear rather than after a mock finds them. The only mode in which a tutor learns which errors are habits rather than accidents, which matters most in the explanation layer.

  • Sixty or ninety minutes weekly in a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot
  • Matched to Higher or Standard Level correctly
  • Paced against the school's current topic, not a textbook order
  • Reviews framed by topic and by command term

Investigation coaching

Process support on the component carrying 20% of the grade. The tutor helps shape a research question with a measurable variable, checks the method can produce enough data to analyse, and gives criterion-level feedback on a draft the student has written. Every measurement, calculation and sentence stays the student's own.

  • Research question narrowed until the variable is genuinely measurable
  • Method checked for range, repeats and controlled variables
  • Apparatus uncertainty compared against the expected effect size
  • No writing, no supplied data, no editing to a finish

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Town Square

01

Which of the three layers is actually missing?

This is the diagnostic question, and getting it right determines whether a term of tutoring changes anything. The three layers fail in distinguishable ways, and the symptoms a parent notices do not map neatly onto them.

A quantitative failure looks like inconsistency. The student is fine in a homework task with time to think and falls apart in a test. They lose marks across unrelated topics, which makes it look like a general problem with chemistry rather than a specific one with conversions under pressure. The giveaway is that the chemistry in their answers is usually correct and the arithmetic or the unit handling is not.

An explanation failure looks like unfairness. The student knows the material, says so, and is right — and still scores in the middle. Their answers are true and incomplete: the force is mentioned but not compared, the trend is stated but not caused, the conclusion is reached but not supported by the step that earns the mark. Parents often describe this as the examiner being harsh, and it is the most straightforwardly fixable of the three.

A mechanism failure looks like a wall. Everything was fine until the organic topic, and then it stopped. The student can recite reagents and products and cannot say anything about an unfamiliar molecule, because they were taught a catalogue rather than a way of reasoning. The table below sets out how each layer presents, what it is, and what the work actually is.

02

Why organic chemistry stops working, and how it is fixed

  • A reagent catalogue has no generative power on an unfamiliar molecule
  • Electron density and partial charge are the reasoning the marks reward
  • Retraining takes weeks, not terms, because the content is already known
  • At HL, plan routes backwards from the target product

Organic chemistry is the most predictable topic in IB chemistry and it has a reputation for being the least. The reputation comes from how it is usually revised rather than from what it is.

Taught as a catalogue, it is a memory task of growing size: this reagent plus that substrate gives this product, under these conditions, learn the list. That approach works for a while because early questions ask for exactly what was memorised. It collapses the moment a paper presents an unfamiliar molecule or asks for the mechanism, because a catalogue has no generative power. The student has nothing to say, concludes that organic chemistry is impossible, and is reasonable to do so given what they were given.

Taught as reasoning, the same content becomes a small number of principles applied repeatedly. Where is this molecule electron-poor, and why. What is attracted to that position. What happens to the intermediate that forms. Why does one pathway dominate over another. A student who can run that sequence can attack a molecule they have never seen, which is exactly what the harder questions require and exactly what the catalogue approach cannot deliver.

The retraining is faster than parents expect, usually a matter of weeks rather than terms, because the content is already known. What changes is the order of operations: trace the mechanism out loud before writing anything, name the electron-poor site, justify the attack, then follow the intermediate. Done on unfamiliar molecules every week, the habit transfers. At Higher Level the same reasoning extends into planning a route backwards from a target product, which is a technique almost nobody is taught explicitly and which turns pathway questions from guesswork into procedure.

03

The investigation is decided before the data exists

Twenty per cent of the chemistry grade comes from an individual investigation, and by the time most students ask for help the marks that mattered have been settled — in the fortnight when the research question was chosen and the method planned, rather than in the write-up.

The design faults recur. A research question whose independent variable cannot be varied systematically with school apparatus. A range so narrow that any trend sits inside the uncertainty. Too few repeats to say anything honest about reliability. A controlled variable that was named but not controlled, discovered at the evaluation stage when the only remaining option is to admit it. And the specifically chemical one: a titration-based investigation whose apparatus uncertainty is larger than the effect being measured.

None of those can be rescued by a better conclusion, which is why a tutor who reads the criteria with the student in week one is worth several who read a draft in week ten. The permitted work is substantial and genuinely useful: explaining what each criterion rewards and its mark allocation, testing whether a proposed question is feasible with available equipment, checking the planned range and repeats will generate analysable data, pointing out that a chosen method's uncertainty will swamp the result, and giving criterion-level feedback on a draft the student has written.

The line on the other side of that list is absolute, and it is worth putting in chemistry terms. A tutor does not write a section, does not supply the titration data or run the processing calculations, does not hand over a model investigation to be adapted, and does not edit a draft into a finished state. Two signatures sit beneath the submitted work - the student's authorship declaration and the supervisor's alongside it - and where that declaration proves false the IB withdraws awards for malpractice. The reason this belongs on a Town Square page rather than in a policy document is that the same search which found us also returns operators selling completed Internal Assessments, one of them advertising at AED 3,750. Hold that figure against what it buys: AED 3,750 is a substantial block of legitimate investigation coaching, spent instead on risking the entire Diploma rather than one component.

What online chemistry tuition can and cannot do

  • Bench technique happens at school; no tutor replaces it
  • Prediction, anomaly handling and uncertainty are where the marks concentrate
  • Written experimental questions test evaluating a method, not performing one
  • Ask the school which practical components are assessed and how

The reasonable objection to online chemistry is the bench, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Nobody on a screen can stand beside a burette and correct a student's eye level at the meniscus.

What is true is that bench technique is a small share of the assessed marks and the assessed part of it happens at school. Titration precision, dilution, gravimetric handling — taught and practised in the laboratory, and no tutor substitutes for that, in person or online. A provider claiming otherwise is overselling, and a parent should treat the claim as a signal.

What one-to-one work adds is the reasoning around the bench, where most of the available marks actually sit. Predicting what an experiment should produce before it runs. Deciding what to do with an anomalous result rather than quietly discarding it. Calculating percentage uncertainty from the apparatus and judging whether the effect exceeds it. Writing up so that the processing and evaluation criteria are addressed rather than merely satisfied in spirit. All of that is paper-and-screen work.

The same applies to the written papers, where experimental questions ask a student to evaluate a method rather than perform one: identify the flaw, name the controlled variable that was missed, say whether the data supports the stated conclusion. That is examinable reasoning and it is what we teach. Ask your child's school which practical components are assessed and how, and we will match a tutor who has prepared students for those specific components.

05

Fitting chemistry into a Town Square week

  • Mechanism work needs an alert hour; quantitative drilling tolerates a late one
  • Year 12: usually 4:45pm straight off the Motor City or Sports City run
  • Year 13: usually 8pm for ninety minutes, for full paper sections with marking
  • Weekend mornings suit investigation work better than scattered weekday hours

Chemistry needs a particular kind of hour, and the layer being worked on decides which. Mechanism work especially requires holding several things in mind at once — structure, charge, what moved where — and a tired student cannot do it. Quantitative drilling tolerates a later slot. Explanation practice sits somewhere between.

The timetable out here is tight. A half three finish in Motor City or Dubai Sports City means a 4:45pm arrival home once the Al Qudra approach traffic is counted; from an inner-city school it is nearer five. Because nobody is driving to you, a session can begin at 4:45pm, which for a Year 12 student working on mechanism or new content is usually the best hour available. For Year 13 the better choice is often 8pm for ninety minutes, when a full past-paper section plus marking fits without rushing the marking.

Weekend mornings are the underused option and for chemistry they are particularly effective during an investigation term: two uninterrupted hours on method design or data processing is worth more than three scattered weekday half-hours, and it competes with nothing else in the week.

Ramadan gets planned rather than discovered. School days shorten and evenings reorganise around Iftar, so Town Square families typically move to a late-morning, early-afternoon or post-Iftar slot, or pause part of the month and resume with a heavier block. Prayer times are built into the slot from the start. What we work to avoid is the drift of cancel, reschedule, cancel — in chemistry that breaks the thread quickly, because mechanism work builds directly on the previous session.

06

Chemistry Higher Level and the degree routes that require it

  • Many medicine, dentistry and pharmacy programmes specify chemistry, often at HL
  • Requirements belong to the institution and the entry year; check them directly
  • We publish no thresholds and make no admissions claims
  • HL chemistry needs to be secure by end of Year 12, when predictions are made

A large share of the chemistry enquiries we take from this corridor are really about medicine, dentistry or pharmacy, and the framing matters because in those cases the subject is a hard requirement rather than a preference.

What can be said plainly: many medical, dental and pharmacy programmes specify chemistry, frequently at Higher Level and often alongside a second science. What we will not do is publish a points threshold or an entry requirement for any named university, because those are set by the institution, change between cycles, and differ across UAE, UK, European and North American systems. Check the published requirement of the actual programmes under consideration, for the year of entry rather than the current one.

Nor will we suggest that tutoring is required for an admissions outcome. That would be a false-urgency claim about a competitive process whose variables — interview performance, admissions testing, personal statement, school reference, the strength of a particular year's applicant pool — sit well outside a chemistry tutor's reach. What chemistry support can do is narrower and real: make sure the Higher Level chemistry grade is not the thing that removes the option.

The planning consequence is about timing. A student aiming at a chemistry-requiring degree needs the HL grade secure by the end of Year 12, not improving through Year 13, because applications and predicted grades are made before the final result exists. That pushes the sensible start date for support to early Year 12 — which is also when it is cheapest and when the quantitative layer is still straightforward to fix.

07

What chemistry tutoring costs in this market

Sort the published Dubai figures by what each tier can actually teach and the market stops reading as one long list. At the bottom, budget online advertises from AED 33-65 an hour - Tutopiya at AED 33-52, EdFlik at AED 45-65 - which buys the quantitative layer and not much beyond it. A qualified online subject tutor sits at AED 150-300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Named IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists form the band above at AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate putting the same band at AED 200-450 plus, while BartyED publishes AED 650 at the premium end. Cutting across all of it, in-home visits are AED 180-500 including travel, which prices the drive out to Town Square rather than the chemistry taught once somebody arrives. Every figure here was read from the provider's own page in October 2026.

The three-layer view explains where the budget band fails. A capable graduate can drill the quantitative layer perfectly well — moles practice is moles practice, and a competent generalist can set and mark it. What they generally cannot do is teach mechanism as reasoning rather than as a catalogue, or tell a student what the investigation's processing criterion actually rewards. So the cheap option is not uniformly useless; it is useless for two of the three layers, which is worth knowing before you choose.

Monthly, Bestimate estimates AED 240-600 for one weekly hour at the budget band, AED 600-1,200 mid-tier and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Advertised packages include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four in-home two-hour visits.

Each figure belongs to the provider named beside it. None is an IB Gram price — we publish no rate card on these pages, because the honest number depends on level, which layer is missing and the weeks remaining. Take the free trial lesson and get a quote after the diagnostic.

What we will not claim about a chemistry result

  • No grade, points, improvement or admissions guarantees
  • No statistics without n, date and method — so none published
  • No regulator claims, no UAE office, no unevidenced examiner descriptions
  • A layer diagnosis instead, including when the time available is too short

No grade guarantee. Not a specific number, not a points improvement, not a particular paper score, and specifically not an admissions outcome. The variables — prior quantitative fluency, weeks remaining, whether the investigation was designed well, whether the student has ever been taught to finish an explanation — are not all under a tutor's control.

No statistics without a sample size, a date and a method, which means none at all. No average chemistry score achieved by students we have taught, no percentage improved, no satisfaction figure, no self-generated star rating. Competitors publish such numbers routinely, sometimes in two conflicting versions on the same page, and almost never say how any of them was produced. Self-asserted review markup also breaches Google's structured-data policy.

No regulator or awarding-body claim, and no examiner descriptions. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge approval, accreditation, licence or partnership, has no office or centre anywhere in the UAE, and does not describe tutors as IB examiners because current examiner status is not something we can evidence. Examiner status confers no access to marking, boundaries or paper content whatever is implied. We host no IB past papers, mark schemes or subject guides as downloads either; they belong to the IB and we link the official source.

What we will give you is a layer diagnosis. After watching your child work real paper questions, a chemistry specialist will say whether the gap is quantitative, explanation or mechanism, roughly how long each takes to move, and whether the available time is enough. Occasionally the answer is that it is not, and that fixing one layer properly beats touching all three.

Where we tutor

Town Square and the drive to Diploma chemistry

The schools offering Diploma chemistry sit a real distance from this corridor, which shapes both the session time and the local supply of specialists.

Town Square

A Nshama community off Al Qudra Road, apartments and townhouses with a young population. Diploma students travel out, so a half three finish usually becomes a 4:45pm arrival home at best.

Mudon

Nearest Dubai Properties community, weighted to Years 7 to 9. Science enquiries here are MYP criterion work or Year 11 bridging rather than Diploma rescue, which is the cheaper point to intervene.

Remraam

Apartment community served by South View School, with the shortest run on this stretch and therefore the widest usable afternoon for a weekday chemistry session.

Serena

A quiet townhouse community on the same corridor, with the same drive to Diploma provision and no local pool of Higher Level chemistry specialists at all.

Arabian Ranches 3

Nearest established community towards Emirates Road, sharing the school pool. Collection often twenty minutes earlier, which widens the evening for a Year 12 session.

DAMAC Hills 2

Further out along Al Qudra Road and villa-weighted, with the same school destinations and the same scarcity of named-course specialists at Higher Level.

The Sustainable City

Home to Fairgreen International School, which runs the IB continuum including Diploma sciences. One of the shorter Diploma runs from Town Square.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level and the current topic

Higher or Standard Level, which school, and what the class is working on now. Also whether a chemistry-requiring degree is in view, because that changes the timeline: the grade needs to be secure by the end of Year 12 when predictions are made.

  2. 02

Diagnostic that tests all three layers

Whatever the student names, a specialist starts with multi-step quantitative questions, then one explanation question marked against the mark scheme, then mechanism reasoning on a molecule they have not seen. That sequence identifies the layer rather than the topic.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the chemistry specialist

The tutor who would continue teaches a full session, no card required and no obligation. Chemistry explanation pace matters: a tutor who is correct and moves too fast through a mechanism produces agreeable sessions and no movement. One hour shows what no description can.

  4. 04

Match the layer to the hour

Mechanism work early in the day, quantitative drilling later, investigation work in a weekend block. Around the Town Square school run and prayer times, usually 4:45pm for Year 12 and 8pm for Year 13. We will say when a proposed slot is too late to be useful.

  5. 05

Review by layer and command term

Every few weeks the tutor reports something checkable: whether multi-step calculations are reliable now, whether explanations finish rather than gesture, whether an unfamiliar molecule can be attacked. If nothing has moved, that is where the plan or the tutor changes.

Quantitative, explanation and mechanism fail in distinguishable ways, and the symptoms a parent notices do not map onto them. A student who looks weak across unrelated topics usually has a conversion problem, not a general problem with chemistry.

Mechanisms taught as reasoning

A reagent catalogue has no generative power on an unfamiliar molecule, which is why organic chemistry has its reputation. Taught from electron density and partial charge it becomes the most predictable topic in the course, and the retraining takes weeks.

The investigation coached at design stage

Twenty per cent of the grade, mostly decided in the planning fortnight. We check the variable is measurable, the range will show an effect, and a titration's uncertainty will not swamp it — while the answers can still change something.

Honest about what online cannot do

Bench technique happens at school and no tutor replaces it. What one-to-one work adds is prediction, anomaly handling, uncertainty treatment and writing up to the criteria, which is where most of the assessed marks actually sit.

No admissions claims for the medicine route

Many programmes specify chemistry at Higher Level, and the requirement belongs to the institution and the entry year. We publish no threshold and will not suggest tutoring is required for an admissions outcome, because it is not ours to promise.

AED figures attributed, and layer fit stated

Every rate names the provider that published it and the month it was read, and the table says which of the three layers each band can actually teach. None of the figures is an IB Gram price.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Town Square: your questions answered

How do I know which part of chemistry my child is actually missing?+

By how it presents. A quantitative gap looks like inconsistency: fine in homework with time to think, falling apart in tests, weak across unrelated topics because every topic uses conversions. An explanation gap looks like unfairness: the student knows the material and scores in the middle, because answers are true and unfinished. A mechanism gap looks like a wall: everything was fine until organic chemistry and then it stopped. Those need three different kinds of work, which is why the diagnostic tests all three rather than the named topic.

Why does organic chemistry feel impossible to Town Square students?+

Because it is usually learned as a catalogue: this reagent plus that substrate gives this product, memorise the list. That works until a paper presents an unfamiliar molecule or asks for the mechanism, at which point a perfect catalogue provides nothing at all and the student reasonably concludes the topic is impossible. Taught as reasoning — where is this molecule electron-poor, why is a nucleophile attracted there, what happens to the intermediate — the same content becomes a small set of principles applied repeatedly, and retraining takes weeks.

Should the quantitative layer be checked before the organic topic?+

Frequently, and it is why our diagnostic starts there regardless. Stoichiometry, concentration, limiting reagent and percentage yield sit underneath every topic in the course, so a weakness in multi-step conversion presents as a weakness in everything else. Students arrive from IGCSE able to balance an equation and unable to carry a calculation through unit changes against a clock. Fixing the bottom layer first also makes the top layer cheaper to teach, because mechanism questions frequently carry a quantitative part.

My child knows the content but scores in the middle. Why?+

Almost always the explanation layer. Chemistry punishes imprecision harder than any other Diploma science: the marks go to answers that name the specific factor and finish the reasoning. Asked why one compound boils higher, an answer gesturing at intermolecular forces gets partial credit; one naming the force, comparing its strength and connecting that to the energy needed to separate molecules gets the marks. Command terms compound it — explain wants a cause, deduce wants a conclusion from given data. It is the most straightforwardly fixable of the three layers.

What is the quickest chemistry improvement before mocks?+

Three things in order. Sign conventions in energetics written down as a fixed rule and drilled, because the chemistry is usually understood and the bookkeeping is what fails. A rule that every step of a calculation goes on paper, since method marks are forfeited by mental arithmetic. And command-term discipline, because a knowledgeable student answering the wrong command term scores nothing. All three are weeks rather than months, and none of them requires covering new content.

When should investigation coaching begin for a chemistry student?+

In the fortnight the research question and method are chosen, which is months before most families ask. The recurring faults are an independent variable that cannot be varied with school apparatus, a range too narrow for a trend to exceed the uncertainty, two readings per point so nothing honest can be said about reliability, and a titration whose apparatus uncertainty swamps the effect. None is rescuable by a better conclusion, which is why week-one criterion reading is worth several week-ten draft readings.

What exactly can a tutor do with my child's chemistry investigation?+

A good deal, and nothing that produces it. Permitted: explaining what each criterion rewards and its mark allocation, testing whether a proposed question is feasible with available equipment, checking the planned range and repeats will produce analysable data, pointing out that an apparatus uncertainty will dominate the result, and giving criterion-level feedback on a draft the student has written. Not permitted: writing any section, supplying data or calculations, providing a model to adapt, or editing to a finish. The student signs an authorship declaration.

How are chemistry practicals handled with online tuition?+

Bench technique — titration precision, dilution, gravimetric handling — is taught and assessed at school, and no tutor substitutes for it, in person or online; a provider claiming otherwise is overselling. What one-to-one work adds is the reasoning around the bench, where most of the marks live: predicting what an experiment should produce, deciding what to do with an anomaly, calculating percentage uncertainty from the apparatus, and writing up so the processing and evaluation criteria are addressed. Written experimental questions test evaluating a method, not performing one.

Is there an HL chemistry specialist living near Town Square?+

Usually not. The IB is roughly 7% of Dubai's 387,441 private-school pupils spread across the whole emirate, only the final two years sit the Diploma, and Chemistry at Higher Level is a narrow specialism inside that. The pool who have taught it to final grade is small citywide, and most are serving school staff whose permit code of conduct bars tutoring students enrolled at their own school. Town Square is also newly settled, so residential growth outran tutoring supply. Online matching removes the constraint that never mattered to the grade.

Can a budget tutor help with any part of IB chemistry?+

With one layer, yes, which is more honest than a blanket no. At AED 33-65 an hour a capable graduate can set and mark moles practice perfectly well — the quantitative layer is drillable by a competent generalist. What they generally cannot do is teach mechanism as reasoning rather than as a catalogue, or tell a student what the investigation's processing criterion rewards. So the cheap option is not uniformly useless; it is useless for two of the three layers, and knowing which layer is missing tells you whether it will help.

What time should a chemistry session be in a Town Square week?+

It depends on the layer. Mechanism work needs an alert hour, because holding structure, charge and movement in mind at once does not survive fatigue — so 4:45pm straight off the Motor City or Sports City run for Year 12. Quantitative drilling tolerates a later slot. For Year 13, 8pm for ninety minutes suits full past-paper sections with marking. Weekend mornings are best for investigation work, where two uninterrupted hours beat three scattered weekday half-hours.

Is Chemistry HL needed for medicine, and can tutoring secure a place?+

Many medical, dental and pharmacy programmes specify chemistry, frequently at Higher Level and often with a second science, but the requirement belongs to the institution and the entry year rather than to a general rule — check the published requirement of the programmes actually under consideration. On the second question, no. Admissions depend on interview, testing, references and that year's applicant pool, none of which a chemistry tutor reaches. What support can do is make sure the chemistry grade is not what removes the option.

What do Town Square families pay for IB chemistry support?+

Published Dubai figures read in October 2026: qualified online subject tutors AED 150-300 an hour with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200, IB specialists AED 200-450 and above with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate giving AED 200-450 plus, budget online from AED 33-65 with Tutopiya and EdFlik, in-home visits AED 180-500 including travel, and BartyED at AED 650 premium. Monthly, Bestimate estimates AED 240-600 budget, AED 600-1,200 mid and AED 1,000-2,000 plus for specialist exam-year work. Those belong to the providers named.

Should chemistry and biology share a tutor at Higher Level?+

Usually not, and this is one pairing where we would rather match two specialists. The content depth pulls apart at HL, and the two subjects reward different habits: biology rewards recall structured by command term, chemistry rewards explanation built from mechanism. A tutor strong in one often imports the wrong habit into the other, which is a subtle but real cost over a term. Chemistry and physics share the quantitative layer and pair more naturally where one tutor genuinely teaches both courses.

Will a chemistry tutor come to our home in Town Square?+

Not one of ours. IB Gram delivers chemistry tuition to Town Square one-to-one over live video and makes no home visits anywhere in the UAE — in-home tutoring is a service we run in India only, at any price. Other Dubai providers do visit, at published rates of AED 180-500 an hour including travel, and from Al Qudra Road a real share of that is driving. For Diploma chemistry the binding question is whether the tutor can teach mechanism reasoning and investigation design, which proximity does not predict.

Tell us which layer, or let us find out

An IB chemistry tutor in Town Square earns their fee by working on the right layer, and the layer is rarely the topic the student names. Send the level, the school, what the class is working on and what time your child reaches home, and a chemistry specialist will test multi-step calculation first, then one explanation question against the mark scheme, then mechanism reasoning on an unfamiliar molecule. You will get a layer diagnosis with timescales and a free trial lesson with that specialist. One-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE.
